What are people saying about Zero Click Spellchecker

John H What is there to prevent the "Wong word with correct spelling" problem during automatic correction?

I wish Win 7 Word Pad came with built in spell check.

SoftCollector Dear Developer,

1. What is the English spell checker based on (as a body of linguistic data)? How many words are included in the dictionary?

2. Are there any known incompatibilites with software like PhraseExpress, which also have (although limited) such functions?

Kind Regards,
Oct 12 2011 at 2:23pm Copy Link
Thomas Holz Hi John H, Hi SoftCollector! Thanks for your feedback.

@John H:
If a word is spelled correctly, then the application doesn't do anything. Since the program works completely automatic (WITHOUT any underlining or context menus), it would be too risky to change correctly spelled words.

1. The software uses the commercial PolarSpell component and (if you agree to the license conditions) the OpenSource hunspell dictionaries. There a no number of words available for either. Both use algorithms for variations (like -ly) and joined words, so it's probably difficult to calculate a number. But both know a LOT.

2. We fixed that some versions ago. Zero Click Spellchecker now detects if PhraseExpress (or a similar program) enters texts and doesn't interfere (to avoid conflicts).

SoftCollector @ Thomas Holz

Dear Thomas,

1. I am a professional translator, so that is the reason why I needed to know if the spell-check is powerful enough to be used professionally. Usually, the judgement for that can be based on the number of words (and forms) included. I am more specifically interested in the English spell-check.

2. I have Phrase Express installed and the two do not get along too well, but it is not your software's fault. I have sets of characters, expanding into phrases by PhE, which unfortunately ZSC treats as typos, corrects them and PhE does not recognize them anymore. I can see that there is a way to set exceptions in your software, so maybe that would be a solution?

3. Any chance of including Bulgarian in the future? I can send you the address of the software vendor who currently procuces the best and only spellchecker with Bulgarian. It would be nice to see that included.

Kind Regards,
Oct 13 2011 at 7:51am Copy Link
Thomas Holz Hi SoftCollector,

1. Sorry, I really don't have the numbers. But AFAIK the hunspell dictionaries are the same ones that OpenOffices uses.

2. Yes, you can add your own works to the program's database. The program will then ignore these works. So adding your PhraseExpress shortcuts should work.

3. Sorry, no. I already have 2 spell checker engines in the program. Don't want to add a third one.

SoftCollector @ Thomas Holz

The strange thing is that ZCS autocorrects my text in Bulgarian (a Cyrillic language, unicode). I am not sure why it does that, and what language it is using as base, but corrections in this case are incorrect. :)

Kind Regards,
Oct 13 2011 at 8:23am Copy Link
Thomas Holz Hi SoftCollector,

sorry, but since Bulgarian isn't supported, the program can't detect this language. And thus can't ignore it. You can only disable ZCS, when you type in Bulgarian. (You can define a hotkey for that.)

SoftCollector @ Thomas Holz

I find the English correcting feature quite helpful, but the incorrect editing of Bulgarian is a show stopper for me at this point. I can see that ZCS does not support any unicode languages at this point, which would probably make it comparatively easy to set up a recognition of such languages, so that no autocorrection is offered for them?

Can this feature be implemented in the foreseeable future?

Kind regards,
Oct 13 2011 at 11:36am Copy Link
Thomas Holz Sorry, no, we're not going to support the Bulgarian language.

That's the Delete key?
Oct 14 2011 at 1:37am Copy Link
Thomas Holz Hi MK!

Right, "Entf" is the German version of "Del". Where did you see it? I just checked the English version, but couldn't find where we might have missed it in the translation...

MK It pops up in the window on the system tray when you mis-spell something.
I'm using the English version (1.05 Trial).

thanks. I found+fixed the problem. We'll publish an update soon. Did I mention that you get 1 year of free updates with the purchase?

Pedro Laurent Nice application I try the trial version and I like it but it does the same thing as another software that I owned call Asutype and I don't have to pay for upgrades, so for the price Zero Click Spellchecker it is now is a good catch.
Oct 14 2011 at 8:43am Copy Link
Peter Dr Hi Thomas Holz:

Like Pedro, I have also used AsUtype, but it runs into conflict with another program that I use: ActiveWords. Apparently this is because both programs use the keystorke buffer (or something like that), so I cannot use them both at the same time. As Active Words is a program that I depend on heavily, I have to leave AsUtype off to the side, and do my own spell-checking. :(

You have mentioned above that Zero Click Spellchecher does not conflict with Phrase Express. Will it also work harmoniously with Active Words? (

Thank you for your time and interest.

Oct 14 2011 at 9:19am Copy Link
Thomas Holz Hi Peter,

I just tested that. And, sorry, it doesn't seem to work. AW prevents ZCS from correcting words. Don't know why/how, but I doubt that ZCS can do anything to fix that.

(But: You can use ZCS to insert custom replacements, too. That as meant for corrections, but you can use it for shortcuts, too. Like "br->Best Regards")

IT-Services Thomas Holz - Oct 14 2011 at 10:53am Copy Link
Frank Stephens I didn't see anything on the website about ignoring passwords, that would be a deal-breaker. BTW, IE10 is going to include Microsoft's spelling-correction abilities.
Oct 15 2011 at 12:06am Copy Link
Thomas Holz Hi Frank,

yes, ZCS does ignore passwords. You can see in the screenshot (on this page) that there is a "Don't correct" tab. It contains the cases where the program ignores errors. Passwords are one these cases.

Regarding IE: Yes other browsers already do that. But they only underline. You have to stop typing, move the mouse, right-click, read the alternatives, etc. ZCS is all about auto-correction.

Joe Doe Hi

What languages do you support?
Oct 15 2011 at 3:50am Copy Link
Michael K This is my result of trying the trial version of ZCS:

Thhis sentunce was typed ento Outlook 2010 anndd oonnly thhe worrdd TYPED was currected.

The following words wer typed into wordpad and allaccepted without change: (note the error in " wer" was also not corrected - It of course should read "were"and note the lack of a space between ALL & ACCEPTED which also passed the spell check ) )

Thhis sentunce ento anndd oonnly thhe worrdd currected.
sentunce oonnly worrdd currected.

Try typing the prior text using the ZCS trial version yourself and see if you get a diffent result. (note: diffent was also not picked up).

Funnily enough all the errors have sent the Bits Du Jour spell check nuts as I type this post but of course ZCS is watching as I type this post too and the only thing it tried to change was turning Bits Du Jour in to Bits Du Jour - Try typing Bits Du Jour yourself and see what happens..... Fancy a name change to Bits Du Hour ?

I'll pass on this ofer thanks (I do know how to spell offer by the way but it seems ZCS doesn't)

Oct 15 2011 at 4:26am Copy Link
Frank Stephens Michael K, if true, that's very bad. I've tried tinySpell in the past (it's still under development) and didn't like the on-the-fly interactive correction. Until IE10 comes out, I'm using the Google Toolbar to do spell-checking in IE9, but Google Toolbar's dictionary is limited (I don't understand why if it thinks a word is incorrect, it doesn't check with Google online first, as Google has excellent spell-checking). For other applications, I simply copy the text, Thornsoft ClipMate has very good spell-checking, generally better than the Google Toolbar but less convenient. ClipMate caught all of your (intentional) errors.
Oct 15 2011 at 6:16am Copy Link
Michael K Frank, I'm testing asutype and so far so good. I'll report back on it in the forum.

Oct 15 2011 at 7:51am Copy Link
Patrick J. Unfortunately there is no german dictionary for Asutype.

Thomas Holz Hi Joe Doe,

ZCs supports English, German, French, Dutch and Italian.

Thomas Holz
IT-Services Thomas Holz - Oct 15 2011 at 8:38am Copy Link
Thomas Holz Hi Michael K,

please keep in mind that ZCS is not a spellchecker which shows you a list of alternatives. It works automatically and it's thus vital to avoid false corrections. Therefore the program was limited to the "probable" mistakes. Like typing one character twice. That's why a word like "anndd" isn't corrected. You just get a notification that it wasn't recognized.

IT-Services Thomas Holz - Oct 15 2011 at 9:59am Copy Link
Michael K Hi Thomas,

I don't recall seeing any such notifications as you mention or any highlighting of the words in my prior post. I have now uninstalled the trial so I can't check anything further.

Others, who have installed the trial version can check everything to their hearts content but it's not what I was expecting or hoping for.

I would also mention that in my humble opinion, your trial contains to many constant nag reminders that it's the trial version.
