We've all read those newspaper articles that talk about people who discover millions of dollars in rare coins in their attic, hidden away in a box that no one ever bothered to look into. It seems that valuable stuff turns up in some of the most unexpected places.

Your computer, for example, is a treasure trove of email addresses, and I'm not talking about the ones that are in your Contacts list in your email program. You already know about those. I'm talking about the hundreds, if not thousands, of email addresses that are embedded in document files, web pages that you've visited, data output files, logs, and forgotten email databases. Chances are, since these email addresses are in your files, you already may have a personal connection to most of these folks. But how do you get to those email addresses, short of hunting through every file manually and handwriting valuable contact information on a notepad?

The easy answer is called Atomic Email Logger, and this app is a real gem. Atomic Email Logger searches your entire hard disk for email addresses that are contained within files, including the temporary files in your internet browser, and extracts all of the email goodness automatically, letting you export them to a text file, the clipboard, or any Microsoft Office application. It sounds too good to be true, but Atomic Email Logger delivers on its promises. Satisfied customers have reported discovering email addresses numbering in the thousands using Atomic Email Logger!

Not only is Atomic Email Logger an invaluable tool to harvest email addresses from your existing data, the program is also extensible with plug-ins that allow you to find even more email addresses in email inboxes, compressed Outlook PST files, spreadsheets, and archived files!

Martin Jay Not another tool for email spammers?!

Bits du Jour does itself a disservice by promoting this type of product.

Yea, yea, yea, I know. That's not what this software is intended for. Flying pigs anyone?

An Gorina hmm... we use it to find e-mails lost somewhere in MY PC. And what do you think it can be used for?%

Devil's Advocate I agree that there is some potential for misuse here, but an application that grabs email addresses from users hard-drive seems to have very obvious legitimate uses as well.

Especially if it searches PDF's.

I work in the media, and the number of marketing PDF's I get on a regular basis is staggering. And they *always* have contact email addresses embedded, often different than the original sender's email.

Does this search PDF's, by the way?

Michael M I can see a personal use for this. Yes, it can be abused by spammers, but look at it this way. 80% to 90% of ALL e-mail per day is SPAM. I suspect that the illegal spammers (aka criminals) already have programs like this, but probably more sophisticated.

So what's the use in bad mouthing the product. Hackers and crackers probably laugh at this program since it is extrememly simplistic compared to what they use. In the cracker's tool box this type of program probably makes up 1/100th of the malicious programs they use to harvest e-mails from our e-mail programs, and if a trojan is installed, to search computers for e-mails.

A malicious teenager could write this program in 1/2 hour, I suspect.

I've gotta agree with you on this, Martin. I wasn't going to say anything this time either, since the lack of response from BdJ to my comments the first time indicate that they just don't care that they're promoting Spamming tools, but this is the *third* Spam tool, from the same software company, that has been offered on BdJ. Oh, well.

Evgeny Medvednikov Devil - Yes - Atomic Email Logger has a built-in option to extract e-mail addresses from PDF files. Also, the basic version supports Word, Excel files.

If you isnatll additional plugins, it will also process the files from ZIP, RAR, PST, etc...

An Gorina "Hackers and crackers probably laugh at this program since it is extrememly simplistic compared to what they use" yeah exactly!) I am sure spammers use quite different ways and tools for spamming, much more powerful indeed
