Have you really taken a look at the way that you name your files? One of the best ways to organize your files is to have a uniform naming convention, but who has the time to rename thousands of files? No one! That's why they invented today's discount software promotion - Batch File Renamer!

Batch File Renamer lets you rename files in bulk - adding, removing, inserting, and replacing characters and text, changing extensions, and more. With Batch File Renamer, you'll enjoy a real-time preview of your changes to avoid errors while exercising more than 40 different ways to rename files. Plus, you get the ability to undo past operations thanks to handy saved log files.

It's amazing how flexible and powerful Batch File Renamer can be. For example, you can use an external file list in Microsoft Excel to rename your files, or apply multiple renaming rules in a single operation!

Diego SEO I need to swap part of the name of hundreds of files recursively. The parts are separated by the minus symbol (-). This way:

phrase 1 - phrase 2. more.even more.extension

to:

phrase 2 - phrase 1. more.even more.extension

In other words: First: Lookup if the file contains a minus symbol and, if so, swap the order of the elements in batches.

Note: phrase 1 & phrase 2 are not patterns, just an example. Every phrase is different (different file names), so I'm looking for a tool to swap the first by the second one over the entire directory tree.

Is this program (or any other) capable to perform this task directly or importing the phrases into a database or spreadsheet as fields for later renaming? Ideally, different symbols should be chosen as separators ([.,-+)

TIA

Algo Logic Hello Diego,

Batch File Renamer is capable to do this operation.

Have a look of the help file.

Thank You.

Diego SEO Hi,

Thanks for the answer "Algo Logic" but there is no information related to my question on that help page.
Just in case, I have installed the trial. There is not a chance to perform the requested operation. The program just provides the most common search and replace operations already available in many file managers and even on freeware tools.

A great deception and a lost of time.

Ernest Kennedy Is this the same version that was given away here on the 4-11-2012?
If so has it had any fixes or updates added?

Ralph Bressler A representative just admitted that the reverse file name and swap file name parts options are no longer available. I will pass on this since it is nothing special and I do not need another renaming program.

Nathan Holden Why it is asking me to "Buy Now" after installing this version? When requesting a key, and entering my purchaser email address, it fails to activate this software.

Innuendo Ralph,
"the reverse file name and swap file name parts options are no longer available"? How odd that a program would *remove* features. Couple this with the reports above that this is abandonware & I really wonder why BitsDuJour is 'giving' this one away.

DrTeeth This is NOT abandonware to my knowledge...I was referring to http://www.bulkrenameutil..._Intro.php. I will not be 'buying' this due to restrictive DRM.

Diego SEO Thanks Rob.

I have installed Flexible Renamer but haven't found a way to swap file name parts. BTW: Undo doesn't work on network folders. Be careful with that.

To rename files in bulk I use XYPlorer (offered here as well) but the problem with most rename related programs is that they are intended to find and replace strings. In this particular case, there are not specific strings to search for.

Thanks anyway for the recommendation. Flexible Renamer an interesting tool.

Mr Dave Diego SEO, have you tried Oscar's Renamer? There's finally a new version ("pro" yet still free) that works with Vista & Win 7 (don't know about 8). It lets you record while you edit a name, and play back the recording on all the other filenames in your list. So you could search for the separator between part1 and part2, hit shift-home to select everything before that, hit Ctrl-X to cut out part1, look for the separator at the end of part2, and paste in part1 at that point in the name. Do it once, apply it to thousands of files. It's a very different concept in renamers, you edit a list of names like you would edit a file in Notepad. When you're done, you apply the changes. Very powerful!

DrTeeth Oscar's Renamer Pro is not exactly free - licence costs $15. Without the licence one gets a nag screen.

To me 'free' means identical to a paid-for version.
