What are people saying about Batch Files Renamer

Avatar I'm a little confused on how these "free" offers actually work. I asked about this on another offer but my question wasn't posted. When I read this: "After you make a purchase of this BitsDuJour discount promotion, Batch Files Renamer may be used indefinitely." I get confused on the purchase part as it is "free" so does this mean we actually go through the process like we're buying it but at checkout it is actually for free? Does it work differently than that? Any help appreciated for this computer challenged person. Thanks.

Yes, essentially you'll be "purchasing" the product at a 100% discount ($0). You don't need to input any credit card info or anything like that, of course :)

Tim Parsons @DrTeeth -- agreed, JoeJoeSoft's Rename Master is free, MUCH more powerful, has a portable mode too, and has far better support. For such an expensive program -- 30 bucks? Really? -- it's hard to see why anyone would want it. It crashed on first run (the "run now" prompt at the end of installation) there's no offline help, the online help is more marketing than functional, and the functionality of the program is significantly poorer than many free alternatives.

I "bought" this but I will not be keeping it. Good thing I hadn't actually paid anything for it!

The developers, if they're serious, really need to look at what else is out there and try and find a way to add something significant and powerful to justify their astonishingly inflated asking price. I'd suggest: realtime previews, search-and-replace facilities, script-building, pattern-based exclusions, regular expressions and commandline versions might be things to think about, and a help file containing usage scenarios is, honestly, absolutely mandatory in a product like this. Build ALL that in, they might be able to justify the price. Maybe. But if this isn't even worth keeping as a free product, they've done nothing more than damaged any possibility of repeat business as a result of this amazingly ordinary product.

Brian De Bragança Oh wonderful...

the download for this "free" offer is a free anyway, feature limited version. It has no help file.

The developer follows up the download with an email offering the "Pro" version for a discount price of $15, stating that it is normally $29. Isn't that what this "free"offer was supposed to be?

Meh.

Wally L Hey Dr Teeth keep the comments free of what people prefer or not.

FYi the so called program You (Dr Teeth) prefers is only compatible with the following Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003, so Windows 7 & Vista & 2008 etc all miss out.

Any Program Bitsdujour Mods are offering essentially free are at least worth a good investigation rather than scoffing at what's being offered.

I for one appreciate all the work that Bitsdujour does getting in vendors to offer their software either free or at discounted prices

Comparisons with other products are permitted here. I use RenameMaster on Vista and Win 7 (both x64) daily and it works fine.
So you don't know what you are talking about from two perspectives.

Avi S @Nelson Therrien provided an excellent overview of the various free renamer programs.
Regarding the extremely powerful Bulk Rename Utility, however, I'd like to add another two (related) cons:
1] Development appears to be halted; bugs reported on their forum many months ago still stay unfixed, and there has been virtually no activity in terms of updates.
2] One case in point: over the past year there have been at least two reports on their forum regarding the incompatibility of BRU's regex operations with filenames containing unicode characters. Specifically, if a regex rename is used upon filenames containing non-English characters, then any non-English characters are simply destroyed and omitted from the new filename, even if the regex backreference indicates that they should be included.
This is a critical problem for anyone who has files with non-English chars, because it means that the resulting filename from BRU will often be very different from what is intended, often leaving out most of the filename altogether! As far as I know there have been no bugfixes for this issue.

Mark Rodland I think there are many free alternatives doing a much better job.
Best for me is the good old "Joe" http://www.heise.de/downl...19088.html .
For me I´m using only the rename option included in Speed Commander, which is given away as a fully functional 60 day trial software that will never expire (This would be a nice Giveaway!!!)

J S Hey Dr Teeth & Walter Lindrum and PeLi just cool down.

I woke up a short while ago and checked out what Bitsdujour had on offer for the day only to see your blistering attack of words and Dr Teeth You it must be said that dont say which "Rename Master" you're referring too, as there appears to be at least 2 different such programs using the same name.

It seems that Walter Lindrum is referring to "Rename Master" from this website: [http://www.knowlesys.com/.../index.htm] and his details do seem to be correctly reported.

BUT, Dr Teeth, If you mean "Rename Master" as Tim Parsons & PeLi both talk of complete with URL's [http://www.joejoesoft.com/vcms/108] - because sadly you dont offer any URL, then yes Win 7 appears to be the latest compatible OpSys.

And Dr Teeth you've mentioned that "comparison" are permissable on Bitsdujour, well, I cant see that you wrote any such thing, You told everybody what You prefer to use and mention DRM, but no forthcoming explanation or comparison against any possible shortcomings YOU believe that the Free for today "Batch Files Renamer" may or may not have.

Stephen Kunkel Can't complain about the price. I was disappointed by the limited number of rules though. I immediately received an email offer to upgrade (for $15 US) to the 'Pro' version and get the following additional features:

1.Pro Version can Rename files with numerical incremental and decrement counter and Set Counter Limits as you wish.
2.Pro Version can Change, Add and remove File extension with one click.
3. Pro Version can Replace, remove, Insert and delete any string inside the Filename
4.Pro Version can Rename files in Upper case, Lower case and Proper Case
5.Pro Version can Rename files with numerical incremental and decrement counter and Set Counter Limits as you wish.
6.Pro Version can Remove spaces and unwanted characters.

I believe there are freeware apps that offer all of these features. What's more though... I always feel duped when I get an app for free, then receive an "upgrade offer." In the field of social psychology we call that the ole' bait-n-switch.

=======
Regarding the "purchase for free" on BDJ, I'd actually say that the process is much easier than and online "purchase". All you do is type in your name and email and get a download link sent to you.

Kenneth Bates QUOTE: " Nico Westerdale Everyone, this offer is for the full version, it's not limited. WE don't play those games here at BitsDuJour! ...."

Thanks for the information, Nico. Unfortunately this has come too late for me. I received the email and paid the extra $15 + VAT for a supposed upgrade to the PRO version. Upon downloading the new installation file, I found that it was identical to the one previously downloaded via Bdj. I checked on the developer's website and there is no such thing as a PRO version with the extra features - at any price!

I think such offers in future should come with a warning tag: "Do not accept any offers to purchase upgrades or enhanced versions"

David Brzeski One gets the impression from the fact that this version doesn't need an unlock code, that it is, in fact the demo version. This is borne out by the fact that you get a second email with an offer to upgrade to the pro version for $15 (reduced from $29).
It would have been more honest to simply offer the pro version for $15 on bitsdujour in the first place.

This is a rather severe limitation for a renaming tool. In fact, there is not much you can use it for. Adding suffixes, yes, as long as it's a single suffix (not numerically changing for each file). Removing spaces, yes - if that's important for you. Renaming according to complex rules as they claim, no way.

This software is being given away, yes. But you're not getting very much for free!

richard moorer this is actually more limited then the demo, I'm guessing they're hoping to use this as a teaser to get people to buy it, but I'm quite certain they mostly just get a lot of people angry with this.

it can add prefixed, suffixes, remove spaces and change case but that's it.
the download you get is also called Batch-File-Renamer-Giveaway.zip, indicating they really made a special, very limited, version to give away, not the program the title suggests it to be.

David Brzeski I certainly don't plan on bothering to install it. How can a version, less functional than the trial version give anyone a reasonable idea if they might want to purchase the full version, or not? As I said before, offering the full version, upfront, at 50% off would have been a lot more honest.

Jean-Francois Puglia "You must install/register the software while the promotion is active, and cannot do so afterwards."

That is really not free for me, it's like a giveaway of the day.
Whit all the complain I wont even install this software.

Thanks but no thanks.

DrTeeth I would add Rename Master (http://www.joejoesoft.com/vcms/108/) to this list.

This sort of promo does not do the developer or BdJ any favours. Not even going to bother installing it after reading the above.

njf THIS IS NOT FREE!!

I agree with all the comments. When you order it, it shows the retail price as $29.95 but with a discount of the full price. This is a con.

If you want the full retail version, they still want $15 for it.

I'm not going to bother to install it and certainly will never consider this software again. I will not deal with companies that adopt such an underhand approach. I'm surprised BDJ didn't reject this as the description is false!

Cary Mathers I agree w/Ray. Just minutes ago I had several folders to rename. There's not much that Bulk File Renamer can't do (I've never run into a batch rename need that wasn't easily solved) - and for free.

My brief evaluation convinced me that this is an incomplete product. Thanks anyway.

Donald Rull This seems dishonest. If what we are supposed to be getting today is normally $29.95, then according to the manufacturers web site it should be the pro version. This is simply an unethical marketing behavior. I agree with the assessment to just offer the pro at $15, instead of free...because that is the truth. Shame on BitsDuJour for letting this crap happen!

Roger Thomasson Ok folks, apparently we received the wrong build of the executable. The developer isn't available today, we'll get it sorted out and re-promote this with the proper version ASAP.

Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience!

Free Ride That company already offered the same version earlier on dailysoftwaregiveaway in the months 02 and 03. And oh wonder, the "Add, insert, remove, and replace characters and text in filenames" feature was missing there, too. But they advertised the feature there "Replace, remove, Insert and delete any string inside the Filename". The Counter Limits feature (Advance Setting) was advertised but not included too. They offered it with the "normally $29 price but today free" too. It might be a helpful program but the advertising is wrong and misleading and not the first time.

Donald Rull Seems like Bits du Jour has a special task of holding this company to task because they may have a history of misrepresenting their promos to consumers...and this could look bad on Bits du Jour's image.

Free Ride At least it should be advertised correct, it's already pointed out that the official demo version is more complete in features than this offer, that means, that this one is an special build or edition, extra made to not offer the real full-featured flagship product in giveaways and promos consciously but listed with retail price?! There is nothing wrong about it, many companies do it exactly like that and many companies did so here on BDJ in the past with open visor, but at least, they advertised it as special build or different version beforehand and they point out what advantages the real full retail-product has, compared to the special build. Completely missing here and there. For the open visor, customers have it and BDJ has it, too.

DrTeeth "You must install/register the software while the promotion is active, and cannot do so afterwards".

Pointless restriction making the deal not worth the trouble IMHO. There's excellent freeware that fits the bill and this sort of policy just makes bitorrent's most (in)famous use more tempting.

Glen Hilton For those that may be tempted to upgrade or purchase any of this vendors software, no matter how cheap it seems on whatever site just check the Q and A or user policy thoroughly first.. Its among the worst I've seen and for this reason alone I would not recommend any of it to anyone no matter how good the software may be. For those willing to pay for a vg app try Flash Renamer, its worth every penny.

Phred E Frankly I don't know why the world doesn't use Total Commander - as a file manager it's as versatile as all heck, and with Ctrl-M it has a fully-functional file renaMer: partials, counters, date/time, Exif reference, find/replace, case, RegEx, an FTP tool, search for or in, etc, etc.
Can be used as a free tool, but of all the purchases you're going to make in your life, Total Commander would be one of your greatest investments.

Chris Carmichael I appreciate your comments Roger A., and welcome your intentions for sorting this problem of "the wrong build" out. However, one has to ask the question: why was this "build" ever built? It serves no purpose, not even as a demo (it does not represent the facilities that the program is supposed to have). I, for one, would be very careful of dealing with this developer.
