What are people saying about beaTunes

Patrick Yancey I have been looking at this and am wondering- how does this program eliminate duplicate duplicate files? Is this an automated feature of the software or does one manually delete the duplicates (once they are identified in the library list)?
Jul 25 2011 at 6:16am Copy Link
0
Hendrik Schreiber The latter. I.e. the software identifies dupes, you get to decide which ones you want to delete/remove.

In the trial the actual removal is disabled - that said, the trial still illustrates very well, what the process is like. Just download the software, start it, ignore whatever else beaTunes is offering and run the Inspection (not Analysis, that's for BPM and the like).

beaTunes will show all recognized dupes (and many other issues) and offer different solutions for each item. Alternatively to single item solutions, you can also select multiple items and mass-apply the same solution to all if them.

The out of the box dupe recognition is title based (i.e. it depends on the data you have stored in your id3 tags). If you want audio signal based recognition, first run "Tools" - "Get AmpliFIND PUIDs" before running the inspection. However, since this involves some audio signal analysis, it can take a while.

jason moras This software is great. I did the trial and have been putting off buying - but - this is perfect timing for me!

Jason Howard I looked at an earlier version of this software some time ago - but as soon as I found the software worked only with iTunes, the eval went straight to the recycle bin. (What the software did looked great - but I refused to run iTunes)

Now in version 3 the developers have come to their senses to also support non-proprietary music libraries that are just folders full of music files (no iTunes!). This is a big time saver for me.

Joris Something I didn't understand about beaTunes... why I have to install Apple QuickTime as Windows user just to use beaTunes? OK, I have to install Java components - but why Apple QuickTime?
Jul 27 2011 at 4:34am Copy Link
0
Hendrik Schreiber Unfortunately, Java is notoriously weak when it comes to multimedia support. Therefore beaTunes uses the QuickTime libraries (not the player - these are two different things) to decode mp3 files and the like. This is also faster than pure Java.

BTW: You don't have to install Java for beaTunes - it comes with its own JVM. Unfortunately, Apple does not allow bundling of QuickTime components. That said, if you have iTunes installed, you already have QuickTime installed, too.

Stephen Stimac Does BeaTunes work with FLAC, WMA, etc. files besides MP3?
Jul 27 2011 at 7:10am Copy Link

Hendrik Schreiber beaTunes supports the formats supported by QuickTime, plus FLAC. There is limited support for WMA and OGG (inspection only, no analysis).

In the trial, applying solutions is disabled, all other functions are enabled.

Toyzrme Analysis - cool - but I tried opening the files to play similar tracks (ie to check BPM & Key accuracy), and I can't open the files in QuickTime, Windows MP, irfanview, VLC...what's up?

S B Hendrik Schreiber,

Thanks for your candid answers. I appreciate your user-oriented license policy. Three privacy/security questions, please:

1) What possible account-identifying information does beaTunes send to third-party service providers?

2) What account-identifying information does tagtraum keep with music request/response information from users?

3) What user information (aside from the expected music lists) does beaTunes or other software determine and send to tagtraum or third-parties?

Many thanks!

From beaTunes privacy policy:

Ron Franc I've been eying beaTunes and finding this Sale was all I wanted to buy the soft.
So, I did and went on trying the program on 1300 selected files that I've manually cleaned up through Tag&Rename and TuneUp before. Even with these files already cleaned up, the Inspection feature in beaTunes proved my manual cleaning wrong :-), the amount of typos, spelling issues, errors and duplicates it finds is not even funny. And, here I am thinking I had a clean library...lol!!!

I gotta use the program extensively to make a concrete conclusion but so far, my little beef with beaTunes is that a user can't rename the name of the file itself. Why, oh why, not have that little feature? It's like cleaning your whole entire house but the backyard is left a mess. The name of the file gotta match the tag. So, I still need to go to a third party program just to do that?

All in all, beaTunes is in a class by itself when it comes to Tag cleaning. I've yet to find any other program that intelligently do what beaTunes does. Add the ability to change the filename and this program will get the 10/10.

Hendrik Schreiber Regarding privacy questions:

None of your music data is associated with usernames or email addresses. Any private information is stored only in connection with your license, not any music data.

Neither beaTunes nor tagtraum industries communicates usernames, email addresses or any other real-world addresses to third parties.
However, to get metadata about your music, you need to send data about your music to a services. In the case of beaTunes, this is a third party services and that service may log data about your music and your IP address.

The shared music database run by tagtraum industries also does use library and user ids. However, unless somebody gets access to your computer or you spread them around yourself, these ids can be considered anonymous as they are not publicly tied to a username or email address.

I hope this clarifies the privacy question. I'm in no way interested in collected non-anonymized, private data.

S B Hendrik Schreiber,

Again, many thanks for your response and candor.

It sounds good to me with one unfortunate exception:

"this is a third party services and that service may log data about your music and your IP address."

Thanks, again!

Ulrich I understand that the use of AmpliFIND Music Services (AMS) is completely optional. If you don't want to use the service to match the calculated PUID of a certain file in your library against the AMS database to retrieve metadata (artist name, album name, genre, year, etc.) , then just don't enable this option in the Analysis Options.

Additionally, the Analysis Options are offered before each new analysis batch. So you can easily enable the AMS service (Import data from AmpliFIND) when you are attempting to process a legally obtained group of files, and disable it before analyzing a not so legal download, if you are this worried.

S B Ulrich Peters,

Thank you for your insights!

I wonder how certain that is for the future and whether there will be warning before that changes.

Alas, I'm not worried about illegal music--I run a business and try awfully hard to make sure everything is appropriately licensed--though it could occasionally take some effort to gather the records to prove it--but what I am worried about is third-parties (with whom I have no direct business relationship and who may further delegate services to other parties, who may further ..., etc., etc.) tracking IP and files and *owning* that data without my knowledge or limitation.

Further, I don't know enough about the structure of the service to say with certainty that there won't be something that "phones home" or inadvertently compromises security in the future.

It could be necessary to run the service from a separate, casual, isolated machine, but I need to know that up front.

Techtoysavvy I am going to buy this just to check it out.
I have a paid copy of musicip mixer but that company has morphed. I understand that Amplifind sold its IP to gracenote. Are they still operational? Can you still use them?

Also, how can you pick the Album that you want. A track may appear on several Albums. I do not want songs from my Hotel California album retagged from some soundtrack album.

Hendrik Schreiber beaTunes is capable of identifying tracks, but since AmpliFIND folded, it's not its strongest feature anymore. This is because, beaTunes used AmpliFIND as a third party service. The replacement service isn't up to the quality yet, AmpliFIND used to be. So if this is the feature you're most interested in, I strongly suggest you try the free trial first, before you buy.

Also, as you correctly pointed out, recognizing the "right" album is pretty much impossible, if a track has been released on multiple albums. Acoustically they are all the same. beaTunes simply picks the most popular one. Because this is less than ideal, I recommend *never* to replace existing album information. However, that is something that beaTunes lets you control through configuration.

That said, beaTunes has many more features besides track id. You will find that inspection allows you to manually correct metadata very efficiently.
OryZ Does buying Beatunes entitle me to use it on only one platform (PC/Mac), or both?

Thanks.

Hendrik Schreiber You can install beaTunes on both platforms, but you can't run it on both platforms at the same time.
In other words: The license key will work on both PC and Mac.

OryZ Thanks again!

So just to clarify I can install it on my PC and if I later happen to buy a Mac (which I am considering) than I can uninstall and re-install on the Mac using the same key?

Cary Adams Haven't seen this before—looks interesting. Can I review the proposed changes before it commits them to my files?

For example, if I ask it to find lyrics, will I be able to review the suggested lyrics before they are bound up in my mp3 file? Is that the same for other fields as well? For example: genre; album art...?

Hendrik Schreiber beaTunes knows three ways of manipulating your files:

1) Inspection
2) Analysis
3) Manual changes

Inspection finds issues in your files, makes you aware of them and lets you select appropriate solutions. This is an interactive process, you have everything under control.

Analysis is a non-interactive, mass manipulation feature, mostly for things like automatically calculating values extracted directly from the audio. E.g. BPM, key, ...
Additionally, analysis can also import metadata like artist, title, track number etc. However, since analysis is not meant to work with any user interaction, it's up to you how you configure beaTunes to replace existing values or not.

Last but not least, you can edit a file manually (via "Get Info" in a song's context menu), try to fetch lyrics etc. and only commit the new values you like by clicking "OK" after something was changed.

So you basically decide yourself, how much control you want.

In any case, there is a limited trial, that shows you what it can and cannot do.

PS: Fetching lyrics BTW, is an enhanced web search - not beaTunes' strongest feature. It's much better at pretty much everything else.

Frank McGowan I have a music library that is (generally) organised as I want it. Of course it doesn't have the metadata even 50% as I'd like it, but it is in folders and subfolders as I want them. Other "Tunes" packages try to reorganise the music files as they want, not as I want. From the description here, beaTunes will only correct missing or erroneous info, but leave the files strictly where they are today. Is that right?

Hendrik Schreiber beaTunes generally does not move files around.
There are two exceptions to this:

1) You are using an iTunes-based library and have configured iTunes to manage stuff for you.
2) You are using a folder-based library and drag files from outside your Music folder into the application

Frank McGowan Thank you for your prompt reply. I do not use iTunes, so that's not a problem. However, my entire collection is on 2 network drives (not under My Music on the system drive (C:)) so are in two separate main folders, with sub-folders and sub-sub-folders under each of them. Can beaTunes handle that?

Salvador User I have some hundreds of CDs stored as WMA and MP3 (i.e., duplicates), Can it report the songs that are in both formats, with a view to later deletion?

Hendrik Schreiber @Frank: If there isn't a uniting main folder, the only solution is to create two distinct libraries and treat both individually.
Hierarchies of sub-folders are not a problem at all.
Please note, that using network drives may slow down analysis/import a lot. I highly recommend using the trial before purchasing.

@Salvador: Check out the Duplicate inspection. It works on tags, but if you like you can have beaTunes analyze acoustic fingerprints, which will then be also used in the duplicate detection. Check out the trial, it does not actually let you delete your duplicates, but everything up to that point works.

Toyzrme To Whom it May Concern -
I bought BeaTunes years ago on my own dime, after an exhaustive search for music management tools with more intelligence than plain tag editing, folder management, and artwork fetching - this is that an a whole lot more - it's very cool stuff!

Once you get your library analyzed and tagged, it's also cool to discover/rediscover tunes hidden deep in the dark corners of your library you probably haven't listened to in a while, and enjoy them in a new light.

Glad to see it on BdJ - well worth it at this price!

Ela S. Does this program works with iTunes only - or can it be used for other media libraries as well (eg Audials, WMP, Explorer etc)?

Hendrik Schreiber It can be used with either iTunes or a base-folder which contains audio files (potentially in a sub-folder structure).
For more details see http://blog.beatunes.com/...needs.html
Salvador User In my library there are a lot of CDs that are both in WMA and MP3 format. In many cases these duplicates are stored in different folders, so manual deletion is impractical. Can beaTunes work with this?
Sep 2 2015 at 7:42am Copy Link

Hendrik Schreiber I assume a folder-based library here, right?
If there is one top-level folder, these different folders are located in, things should be alright. But to be sure, you might want to download the trial and run the duplicates inspection—see what gets detected. How inspection works in general is explained in http://blog.beatunes.com/...ction.html
John User I downloaded the trial version and I like what I see. I am a longtime users of Media Monkey Gold, but I think this might fill in some gaps.

Anyway, before I purchase any software I like to check out the terms, conditions, etc. I checked everything here and on the website and can't find:

1. How long is the license good for? Lifetime?
2. How often are upgrades done? Cost, or are they free.
3. I spend part of the year in NJ and part in FLA. Can I use my licensed copy on both PCs, using when I am in that location, or do I have to have 2 licensed copies - one for each PC.

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but before I purchase I'd like to know more, or at least where to look on the website or here.

Thank you.
Sep 2 2015 at 2:53pm Copy Link

Hendrik Schreiber 1. Lifetime
2. Minor updates (4.x -> 4.y) are done as needed and free. Major updates (4.x -> 5.x) are NOT free and happen roughly every 2 years.
3. You can use a single license for that use case.

Just FYI: BitsDuJour has this overview called "The Fine Print"—it contains much of the same info.

Richard User I bought a license yesterday on this offer. If you are into actively managing your music collection and want to get the most out of it, take a hard look at beaTunes. Some aspects of it are very cool. Also as a strong plus, the developer (Hendrik) is very responsive to customer issues and questions. This is an unpaid, unsolicited testimonial!

PortablesFan I'm not 100% sure if this will be useful for me, but I got it anyway. Why?
1) Because there is at least a fairly good chance it'll be helpful, as I have a lot of CDs.
2) Because I VERY much appreciate the license model (per-user) and want to support the author in his choice of less-restrictive DRM.
3) Because I just got a Mac that's a bit older, but this can still run on it (or my Win7 PC!).
4) Because it looks to be toward the beginning of the major-version cycle, so we can likely get something like 1.5-2 years of free updates.

The only change I'd make so far--is if there could be a portable version (could be run from a USB drive)! Then if your music library is scattered among several networked PCs, you could run it on each without actually "installing" on any of them. But that does probably sound like a little beyond the intended use of the program...

Thanks for the discount!

Richard User I bought beaTunes 4 in April 2016 and upgraded to version 5 two months ago when it came out. This is a great program being actively maintained by a very responsive, customer-oriented developer. New features are always in the works. Sometimes some of the BDJ offerings are a little sketchy. This is absolutely NOT the case with beaTunes. If beaTunes' unique functionality appeals to you, I think you'll be happy having made the purchase. (This is a 100% unsolicited and uncompensated testimonial. Quality products and the people behind them deserve recognition.)
