What are people saying about Berokyo

G Booth This looks amazing, I have downloaded and installed the trial version but cannot rename categories or subcategories. The software lets me enter the new names but then reverts to the default titles. Is this a limitation of the trial version only ?.

I notice cabinets can be named also, how are these names displayed ?.

Does Berokyo run under Windows 7.

Thank you in advance.

G Booth Please Ignore my question about renaming categories, its all working fine now. Would still like to know about cabinet naming and windows 7 though.

Diego Morris The cabinet name is currently used in the tray menu under the 'Show Cabinet' submenu only. In the next product update, the name will be optionally displayed in the upper left corner of the cabinet.

Yes, we tested Berokyo on Windows 7 RC and it worked fine.

Thank you for your interest in Berokyo!

G Booth Thanks for the reply, I will be buying Berokyo, even after a short trial I find it invaluable.

One more question, is there a way I can delete patterns I have added and no longer want to use. I cannot see any option to do this but maybe there is a settings file i can edit.

Thank You
Aug 7 2009 at 11:38am Copy Link

Diego Morris You can delete any user-defined patterns and colors by simply pressing the DEL key.

By the way, in the next product update we plan to add importing, exporting and sharing capabilities for styles.

Mike G Interesting application! Search functionality/speed is amazing. Reminds me of a super visual Launchy. Styles are like skins for the file cabinets. More styles (how about an Aero style, hmm...!) and eventually more flexibility in shape (e.g. making the cabinet wider, more narrow) would be nice to look forward to. Addtional options like adding favorite buttons to the cabinet for quick access and one-click anywhere on category shelf to open/close (instead of moving your cursor to the small button) would be nice too. Might grab this one just to see how it develops and gets used compared to other desktop tools I have.

G Booth Mike G, I have discovered that you can already resize the cabinet. Just drag any edge as you would a normal window and you can make it any size you want.

Best Regards

Bob S This does look interesting, but I have a couple of questions:
1. When you click on Berokyo, do all of the cabinets appear? or are the categories and subcategories displayed, so that one can directly to the (sub)category desired? Full display and one-click access is much more efficient.
2. Related question - all your screen shots show 3 categories. When one clicks on a desired category, does that category "fill the screen?" And how does one get back to the other categories?

I guess I'm trying to understand how quickly I can Navigate to the desired (sub)category using and it isn't clear from the screenshots.

Thank you.

Bob S.

P.S. I currently use "Fences" to organize my desktop - not bad, but could be improved. In fact, I don't think it's still maintained by the developer.

Diego Morris All cabinets appear when you one-click the system tray icon. They also appear if you press the CTRL+F10 hotkey and can be hidden using the CTRL+F11 hotkey. All hotkeys can be customized using the program Preferences.

You can have all (sub)categories collapsed/expanded at any time and expand/collapse them by simply double clicking on them. However, the best way to find items to quickly launch them is by using the incremental find feature that shows results as you type in the search box. Also, you can use the Quick Search box (CTRL+Space) that let you find in all cabinets at the same time as well as search the web using the main search providers.

FYI: The next product update is already under development and we'll include many new features based on current users feedback, so if you have any suggestions they will be greatly appreciated.

Cathy Gould Very Impressive!

Even though I have a finder I like, I want to try Berokyo because it looks just smashing! i was interested when the first bit scrolled onto my screen.

Thanks for offering it. Getting it right now!

Mike G G Booth, you're right about that. I had tried dragging an edge, but was not careful to make sure the double arrow cursor was still showing. It must have reverted back to default cursor and dragged the whole cabinet. Most Windows applications only allow drag from title bar, but I like being able to drag the cabinet around from anywhere, so I can live with having to be careful.

Bron Faison Mike G. wrote: "(2) option to set delay for how many seconds it will take bumping an edge before the cabinet slides out from autohide. Just a 2 or 3 second delay for example would eliminate accidental opening for me without having to use a key combination."

Just to make it clear for thsoe reading these comments, Berokyo has an option to set a key combination, so, for example, using "Ctrl" as the setting, the cabinet won't "pop up" when you touch the edge of your screen unless you are presing the "Ctrl" key at the same time.

This is an excellent option - many programs I've tried have no such feature and always 'pop up' which can get very annoying. I was impressed that the developers had already ahdnled this situation pretty well. The dely option suggested by Mike, is, of course, another way to handle this.

Personally, I am fine with the key combo option, but the more choices users have the better. As long as they keep the key combo feature, I'm fine with it.

Looks like a well thought out program so far...I am also currently using "Fences" which I like very much.

gail f Love this program! Downloaded the trial and have been using, bought it first thing this morning. I have TONS of programs and am using it to categorize programs (ie photos and graphics, video and editing, computer maintenance etc.) Each set goes in a category drawer, nice and neat! I had the program add all my programs and then I just dragged them each into the right drawer.

I have been using Fences, which I love and am keeping too, but these closed drawers/shelves are very cool for all my programs!

Stefan Hauber Seems to be a great program.
You are definitively right: My desktop has no more space for icons too...

Is it possible with (or about to come with a next version of) Berokyo, to link a desktop-icon to a Berokyo-cabinet, so that clicking on this icon would open a specific cabinet? So instead of having e.g. 10 icons containing image-programs, I could have a cabinet containing all of them (and some more), and just one 'Image' icon on the desktop. I would prefer this way instead of using different Hotkeys for each type of program...

Here some smaller things, I would have on my wish-list:

1) Additional I would prefer to have hotkeys, allowing more than one key pressed: In the example above this could be e.g. CTRL-11 (for Berokyo) and an additional I afterwards for my Image-programs. So for 10 categories I would not have to remember (and consume) 10 Hotkeys...

2) When showing labels, I would prefer them to be word-wrapped (and not cut somewhere in the middle when being continued on the next line)

Perhaps an inspiration...

Emil Kucera I want a file opened in, say, TextPad, once I click it. How do you parse a file name to the program in Berokyo, or is it possible?
Jan 8 2011 at 5:14am Copy Link

Kevin Harris When you click on any item it is opened using the associated program, so if you have set in your system that TextPad should open all text files then it should work fine.

Emil Kucera @Kevin Harris
It may be with another program than the associated one, though, especially when it is a file without extension. I would like to be able to put in the Properties, e.g.,
"C:/Program Files/TextPad 4/tpad40.exe d:\txt\rick", tried
C:/Program Files/TextPad 4/tpad40.exe%d:\txt\rick% but neither works. _Is there a way? When he default program for the txt files is a different editor?

Kevin Harris Yes, the activation system takes into account hardware. However, you don't need to worry about this because once your activations are over you can request us to reset them so you can activate/unlock the product again on your updated or reinstalled system.

Thanks

Kevin Harris No, you cannot use the same license for unlocking both products as both versions use different activation systems. Thus, you should buy a separate license for Windows and Mac OS X.

A. C. This is a nice piece of software.

One thing maybe:
It's supposed to be a 'replacement' of the icons on the desktop.
So if I minimize all, is it possible to leave the cabinet visible, so that I have my icons available.

Oh, another thing:
And is it possible to auto add items. So I assign a directory to a category, and all the files/items/shortcuts gets added/updated in the cabinet.

That would be a great boost for me. :-)

Tazzie This is a cool program, and so far works great in Win 7/6
4 bit.

I do have a question about the thumbnails in the drawers. I appreciate greatly being able to choose the font, but can the size be changed at any level, and can it be individualized as far as font choice for different drawers/thumbnails?

Also, can the size of the thumbnails be changed? For those with vision difficulties, this can be a real hindrance to effective use of the program.

Thanks!

Kevin Harris Yes, you can change the thumbnails size either individually or all of them by simply selecting them and then dragging the slider in the bottom right corner.

Tazzie Is there a way to have larger thumbnails other than thru the slider? For some thumbnails it makes a difference and for others it doesn't, but even when it does enlarge them, it isn't always large enough for me.

aladdin T This software is crap. When I bought this software, I was allowed to install on my four machines. On my desktop and on three laptops. Still have it on my one of my laptop, but not on my desktop and two laptops. The reason I formatted my desktop and two laptops and now I cannot activate it on these machines, even though I had it on them.

Usually, online activation is based on the footprints of the computers, meaning the computer hardware.

Very disappointed!

Kevin Harris You shouldn't be disappointed for these reason because you only need to contact us and send us your Serial Number so we can reset your activations and you'll be able to unlock the program on all your computers again.

Jason Howard I purchase this last time on BDJ - and thought there were big things ahead for this program. Trouble is the big things seemed to be for people running platforms other than Windows.

The developers even asked customers for suggestions - http://www.google.com/mod...#16/e=207c to take into account while developing the next product version. We are still on version 1.35 and haven't seen any improvements since the last program version back in March 2010.

There are several functionality and usability improvements that can be made to Berokyo - as suggested by Berokyo own Developer(s) and customers over a year ago.

aladdin T Dear Patrick,

To be fair to Berokyo, I have not used the program at all. I own lots of programs and when I get some time I test the program. When I purchased this program last time on Bitsdujour, they allowed me to install it on my four computers. However, it has to be activated online and if you format your computer, you have to email them to reset the activation. This ticked me off.

Hope this answers your question.

Kevin Harris Louis, we've been very busy developing Berokyo for iPhone and iPad but we do intend to release a major update for the desktop version of Berokyo. However, I cannot tell you the date or estimate when that new version would be available.

By the way, anyone interested in the iPhone / iPad version can find more information at: http://www.berokyo.com/ios/en/index.html or http://itunes.apple.com/a...?mt=8&ls=1

Louis H Thank you, Kevin, for your response.

I went ahead and installed the trial version to give a test run.

Since it's free upgrades for Life, and you are actively interacting with folks, and honest enough to let me know you don't know when the update will actually get released, I'm willing to give it a try. I don't mind waiting for updates as long as the developer/vendor keeps customers in the loop of what is going on.

One problem that I have encountered, and it might not be directly due to Berokyo, itself, is that most of the icons for the items are showing up as a default icon. (I.e., they are now all the same looking icon) How do I get it to recognize the actual icons of the programs?

I searched the help file, and looked through the website and could not find any thing related to this situation and how to correct it.

That issue aside, I like what I see and think the program is definitely worth getting, IF I can work out the icon issue.

Thank you again for interacting with folks while Berokyo is the deal of the day here at BDJ.

Labeling a product as 'crap' with absolutely no experience using it isn't really how we do things around these parts. The BDJ community is an awesome group of software enthusiasts that do their best to inform and elucidate each other.

We freely invite constructive questions and criticisms. But without the insulting language. That's what the other 99.9% of the internet is for.

aladdin T @ Roger,

Keep your preaching to yourself. In my book any software which requires online activation is OK, but not when it is already activated and the hardware configuration is already known. On re-format it should activate without a hitch.

However, it is nice to say, send us an email and we will reset the activation. Image, on re-format one has to send tons of emails to each and every software vendor for resetting the activation. Re-formating itself is very time consuming, let alone those ton of emails and explanations. And, then back and forth emails, and more explanations.

Imagine, when you install Windows and you activate your Windows online. On re-format you don't have to send an email to Microsoft to reset your activation.

WHY?

It remembers the hardware configuration of your computer.

So, keep your preaching to yourself.

aladdin T And, as far as Berokyo is concerned, if it was one heck of a software, I would have used it long time ago. It is money down the drain. Imagine, the software hasn't been updated for almost a year now, as the vendor is busy developing it for iPad and iPhone. New customers in mind.

The people who have bought it are stuck with old software and one of these days it will be updated. Good news.

Like I said, the software is not worth the money, and if it was I would have used it long time ago, as I have paid my hard earned money for it.

aladdin T Therefore, I was being kind to the software in my remarks to Patrick by saying that I have not used it. Like I said, if it was worth the use, I would have used it long time ago.

Add to the fact that I didn't have it for a very long time on my computers as I re-formatted my computers and it wouldn't allow me to activate.

Yesterday, I received an email from the software vendor resetting my activation. I still haven't installed the software yet.

Louis H Kevin...

I did figure out that I can use the "Set Custom Thumbnail" to replace all the default icons with images of my choosing. If there is an easier way to do it, please let me know. It would be nice if there is, but for now it's not a pressing issue for me.

Jason Howard @Louis - that is probably one of the most confusing (and unintuitive) aspects of the program. Cleaning up the desktop or dragging items into Beryoko still requires the original shortcut (in the same location to work).

If you drag a shortcut from your desktop or start menu into Beryoko, windows should either move or copy the icon and the details it needs to the destination (Beryoko). What actually appears to happen Berokyo just creates a link to the original shortcut (effectively a shortcut to a shortcut). If you check the Properties->Target of the shortcut in Beryoko it is the *.lnk file on your desktop, not the *.exe file that the *.lnk file points to.
If you then delete or rename the original shortcut, the link is broken, and Beryoko cannot launch that program.

This extra level of indirection only confuses what should be a simple task. Even windows explorer doesn't work that way - if you right drag a shortcut into a new folder, the properties of the new shortcut point to the original program and not to the shortcut.

The alternative the help file gives is to move all of your desktop icons into a new folder on your desktop called "Desktop Items" and then drag (copy) all of those icons into Beryoko.

You then leave that "Desktop Items" folder of shortcuts on your desktop. If you delete it, move it or rename it (or change the contents of that folder) any of the links in Beryoko that point to it will break.

There were a few times early on - when I set up Beryoko just how I wanted, and then cleaned up the other shortcuts on the desktop, and found that in the process I killed the links in Beryoko... definitely frustrating.

As I said the other day - there are many functionality and usability improvements that still need to be made before Berokyo on windows approaches where it should be.

With free lifetime upgrades... I really hope it won't be another year or two before the "intentions" eventuate of releasing an upgrade that addresses the issues and wishes raised by customers and developers.

Berokyo could be a really good product, the idea is great, the foundation is mostly there - but behind the polished appearance, the final experience the user gets after an hour or two use will seem lacking.

Louis H Thank you Jason for a very clear description of how it works (or doesn't depending on your point of view.)

I played around with it for many hours today - trying different ways to see if I could get it to accept the icons as they are with the actual shortcut. The links are ok, as I can click on the default icon in Berokyo and the program will start. The shortcuts to the shortcuts, however, simply will not accept the icons/thumbnails I am trying to attach to them.

Again, this specific problem may have more to do with my system than with Berokyo directly, but in light of the things you identified, and that I know i would end up setting it aside due to the icon issue I am having, I'll wait and give them time to update the program.

Brad Hello,

My two cents!

In deference to some negative comments posted about this Berokyo application, I must say I have had the software in daily use on Windows for well over a year. It is stable, most functional, and to boot has a clean and polished appearance. It is not overly intrusive and bloated. It has a small footprint as far as resources used. It is a huge leap over the constant hunting and pecking for that specific app you used 4 months ago and whose name you for the moment have forgotten, and it's buried in the the All Programs menu in Windows somewhere.

I have created very specific and multiple catagories of software apps organized by type, i.e, Video, Audio, Web Programming, System Programming, Database, and at least for my specific workflow this software has made my daily work a breeze in terms of selecting and organizing the apps I use, daily, weekly, and monthly on Windows. I have gotten use to the software and feel measurably more productive, although this is a very subjective experience. But for me the software just works. The price point is a great value even at full price, and from my view is a no brainer at nearly half-price.

However like any software, does it expand your productivity, make using your computer more enjoyable, and give you greater access and ease to using Windows, I would say yes!

Although there is short time time frame from testing for your own experience to the buying decision, even if you buy it and do not find it the panacea your were envisioning, how much were you out for the experience, $10 bucks, that's a couple trips to Starbuck's. Is it a risk, yea, but you may just be pleasently surprised to find you like what Berokyo has brought to the table. Oh, and by the way, did they mention Lifetime Updates? I'm all in.

Louis H Brad...

You are obviously not alone as this program must be attractive/useful to many as it is being offered for a 2nd day in a row. (I don't believe BDJ would be running it twice in a row if it was not making money for them. That is not meant as a negative, by the way, BDJ folks. The more money you make, the longer you will be around, and the greater the chances of picking up even more spectacular deals in the future!) :-)

I actually like the way it looks, but simply am overwhelmed with the icon problems I have mentioned earlier.

As to picking it up now since it is just slightly more than $10, my financials could change at any moment and so while I agree that normally, for me, $10 would not be a lot to roll the dice for, currently I am a little more "gun-shy" in buying anything that shows the possibility of taking far too much time for me to get it running correctly and thus would more than likely end up filed away somewhere to be forgotten. (And I can stretch $10 worth of food for many days.....!)

By the way, are you aware that behind calling something a "no brainer" is the suggestion, intended or not, that folks who do not take the offer are even less intelligent than people without brains? Linguistically speaking, of course. ;-)

P.S. If I could easily resolve the icon problem, I'd pick up in a heartbeat!

Brad @ Louis,

Nice catch Louis, and cudos on your very kind response to my linguistic Faux pas in using this term "no brainer". After a critical review of my sentence....I heartly agree with your obervation.

Notwithstanding my intent, thanks for bringing it to my attention. My lack of sensitivity in the context of this post was most ill conceived.

And who said diplomacy was lost in our interactions with each other in cyberspace. I bow to your masterful use of tact in bringing this to my attention.

Regards, Brad

Louis H Ah, shucks, Brad... now I'm blushing..... ;-)

By the way, since my last comments, I found a wonderful use for this program that has resulted in my decision to pick it up today. I have gotten into photography as I am getting older and I never seem to be able to easily find the picture I am looking for, even with a number of the other available image catalog type programs. And I don't always want to start my various photo editors simply to track down a few pictures.

While Berokyo is not perfect (it is limited in what file types it will generate thumbnails for - does not automatically generate thumbnails for RAW images), it is very nice - and pleasing to the eye - to have so easily available a way to quickly scan through thumbnails for my JPEGs.

Now that is worth $10.50 to me.

(And with a lifetime, free upgrades, license, I can work on my other Icon issue at my leisure!)

Brad @ Louis,

Slick! Just when you think you've browsed most of the corners of Beroko, now another function to add to my toolbox.

It is nice having the Lifetime upgrades. If the developers continue to work the product we can hopefully expect tweaks and new features to be added with zero overhead for us.

Have a good evening Louis!
