What are people saying about Beyond Sync Standard

Don Canaan Can I sync desktop files with Android smartphone?
May 14 2012 at 7:18am Copy Link
Lewis Tian I think if you mount Android phone as a mass storage device, Beyond Sync will able to synchronizes the files.
Fevosoft - May 14 2012 at 7:31am Copy Link
VLM If this tool "synchronizes files immediately after each file change", does this not imply some significant system monitoring overhead?
May 14 2012 at 9:23pm Copy Link
Lewis Tian If large files, e.g. several hundreds MB, change very frequently, then you can image that it has impact to system performance since disk reading/writing takes time. But in most cases, such impact can be ignored. You can try it out yourself and see how it works.

If you still concern it, you can simply use manual or scheduled sync. Beyond Sync supports them very well too. It has a built in scheduler, command line support, Windows service mode.
Fevosoft - May 14 2012 at 11:06pm Copy Link
VLM Thanks Lewis.
May 15 2012 at 9:53am Copy Link
Lewis Tian There are four options in Beyond Sync when conflicts occurred: overwrite target, overwrite source, overwrite old file or skip.

al mel Who do I contact if registration codes are not working?
May 16 2012 at 4:18am Copy Link
Eric Johnson make sure when you enter your registration that you use "BitsDuJour" as the Registration name and not the top registration name "your name" , it is confusing and easy to over look.
May 16 2012 at 5:49am Copy Link
Lewis Tian Eric Johnson is right, you should use "BitsDuJour" as registration name. It will work correctly.

tomer User Does it have the following or is there a way to set them up easily?
1. FTP Synchronization
2. Rollback File to much earlier version
May 16 2012 at 6:37am Copy Link
Lewis Tian 1) For FTP Sync, please consider using FTP Synchronizer ( It's just designed for such purpose.

2) If you need earlier version, you can use variables in task folder's name:

Avatar I'm also having trouble getting the program to accept my registration code. I've done exactly as directed )copy and pasted and visually verified that name and code were exact) but it will not work. Not sure what I could be doing wrong.

Franck Waserman Reg works good and the program sounds nice and pleasing to use.
Some sad things :
- no special upgrade price to go to pro... If I have ever bought this standard quite restricted version, I'd feel it painful to shell out the full price all over again.
- even 29$ for the full version would be a decent price if some of the following problems were adressed :
a- add possibility to sync to ftp (from local to distant ; the other direction seems pretty useless to me)
b- add a fully portable version that can be run from a usb stick (in order to sychronize some portable folders with folder in my differents computers). FreeFileSync can do that, for free !
c- add an event manager : I'd like to sync some folders from and to my usb stick when it is plugged in.
d- allow purchase from an online shop that doesn't add VAT to european customers (I'm sure they never pay it back to the autorithies!). Currently 29$ are 31€ (I just tried to "purchase"...) No way !

Anyway, Thank you Lewis Tian for your good work and generosity. :)
May 16 2012 at 7:55am Copy Link
Lewis Tian Thanks for your comments. Please don't worry about the upgrade. We'll provide it to all users at a very low price after several days.

I appreciate your suggestions, I have forwarded them to developers and I'm sure they'll consider them seriously.

Jann Martin It installed ok, I just cant get it to register or activate using the code that BitsDuJour sent me in the email today. Anyone have any ideas why the activation is failing every time and telling me I need to purchase this software?
May 16 2012 at 8:25am Copy Link

Enter the Registration name as "BitsDuJour"
BitsDuJour Admin - May 16 2012 at 8:28am Copy Link
Lewis Tian Please use "BitsDuJour" as registration name, not your personal name.
Fevosoft - May 16 2012 at 8:34am Copy Link
Jann Martin Avatar, I tried using one name and both names, and still am unable to activate/register this software. I have an email in to BitsDuJour and Fervosoft about it. In the meantime, I have uninstalled the software for now.
May 16 2012 at 8:41am Copy Link
Franck Waserman @lewis tian : I'll wait for your offer. But please allow direct purchase from you via paypal.
I always avoid buying from plimus & co : awful exchange rate $ - € and so-called European VAT... It's expensive for the customer, with no visible added value.

@BDJ : I think many people have difficulties to register because your mail is confusing.
Add a new line between the name and code line...

Registration name: BitsDuJour Registration Code: XX-SOMETHING-GUESS-WHAT?

At first glance, I thought reg name was "BitsDuJour Registration" and the code was "XX-SOMETHING-GUESS-WHAT?"

You should write :

Registration name: BitsDuJour

lisba f It seems an interesting question above is not answered, if Beyond Sync is "similar to dropbox without the capacity caps?"
May 16 2012 at 11:19am Copy Link
Eric Johnson Beyond Sync is to sync your pc to an backup partition or external drive/network computer local, so is limited only by your hard drive storage space.

Dropbox stores files online, so there are limits.

They are both great options and services, I use them both for long time now; But you can not really compare the two as they are different kinds of services.

I have used other local sync/backup options and Beyond Sync has by far had the least impact on system resources, I only notice anything at all if I add a huge file to the folder to sync such as an ISO, even then its not that noticeable and my pc is few years old :)
May 16 2012 at 11:36am Copy Link
w wood If I sync to a USB drive, what happen when the drive is not connected. Does beyond sync keep track of changes and catch up when I attached the disk?
And what if I do a backup using Acronis or something similar. Will that confuse Beyond Sync or can it still track the changes when i reconnect the drive?
May 16 2012 at 12:26pm Copy Link
Lewis Tian This feature will be available in next version very soon. In current version, Beyond Sync doesn't track changes when target folder is unavailable. You need to do a full sync after it's connected.

And, I didn't see any problem for Acronis backup.
Fevosoft - May 16 2012 at 4:59pm Copy Link
Mark Chiang Will it be possible to install the download at a later date, if you have the reg code? Or does the product have to be activated today for the free offer?
May 17 2012 at 12:24am Copy Link
Mario Balzic First thing, I appreciate what the program does and I see where it could be quite useful to use as a backup operation for selected data files on an automated basis. However, I noticed a problem... two actually... I use a laptop with Windoze 2k Pro when I am on the road. I use Firefox as my browser, but the HELP system opens Internet Explorer directly instead of the default browser! WHY would you DO that? There is a reason WHY I use Firefox as my default browser instead of IE! What would have happened if I had NOT had IE installed? What would have happened if I was NOT connected to the internet? What good is online help anyway if I go to use this application on an isolated machine as a way to backup selected files?

1: Build HELP into the program instead of online and OFFER additional help if online.

2: Call the default browser if you must use an online connection instead of IE. It makes you seem like a shill for MS to use their browser instead of the default browser used by choice of the end user.

Otherwise, this appears to be worthwhile for me to use as a convenient way to keep data in sync between home base and the machine I use on the road from here to there and back again...
May 17 2012 at 6:17am Copy Link
Lewis Tian Beyond Sync wasn't designed to launch IE, it just launches the default browser. On my computer, it's Chrome. I'm not sure why your computer doesn't work like this. I'll ask our developers to check it out.

As for the help file, sorry we just moved from local to online help. I'm afraid we can't go back. Anyway, I appreciate your suggestion.
Fevosoft - May 17 2012 at 6:31am Copy Link
Franck Waserman I also prefer local help and going to online wasn't a nive move.
Just my 2 pennies...
May 17 2012 at 10:25am Copy Link
Eric Johnson Not that I feel there is really any kinda help needed for this program as it just does what it does.. pretty simple... but I prefer the programs that have an up to date online help where the developer can keep the information updated at all times without having to update the program itself. I can see why some of my other more complex programs have local help files because there is so much to it, but they also have it online as well which is were I would go in the first place anyway.

Just thoughts from the other side..
PS: When I click help it launches my default browser.. just thought I would add that because of above comments about it launching IE.
May 17 2012 at 2:01pm Copy Link
Mario Balzic Additional comment: The program does not gracefully exit if it is in the middle of an update. i built a rather complex task, which takes over an hour to complete since I tried using a CRC comparison. When I went to reboot after installing a software package, all I got was an error message telling me a task was in progress, and the application would NOT shutdown. So, I waited until it was done and THEN restarted. It IS an inconvenience. A suggestion: add a way to gracefully exit right NOW and aborting the task in progress.

I wonder, what would have happened if I simply had lost power? i live in the Pacific Northwest and I get brownouts and complete losses all the time when it rains around here, which it does for all but 57 sunny days we get on average every year. My UPS only lasts for 10 minutes and tries to gracefully shutdown Windows, which works perfectly for me, until NOW that is. With this program installed, Windows can't shutdown, and my UPS will die when the battery reaches a low voltage threshold, and then the power goes OFF, risking the integrity of my OS! So, it no longer runs in the background automatically, which sort of defeats the purpose...

Thanks for the program. I've used it for several weeks (It is now 6/23 and the offer expired on 5/17) and been completely satisfied and happy, until now, when it refused to stop or abort a task in progress... Still, I am grateful for the program, and will continue to use it, just not automatically when I am not here in person...
Jun 23 2012 at 7:38am Copy Link
Lewis Tian @Mario

Did you enable "Run task on system shutdown" option? If it's enabled, the system will continue shutting down when the task is completed. If you have power issue, I'd suggest you disable the option.
Fevosoft - Jun 23 2012 at 8:24am Copy Link
Mario Balzic @Lewis: Well, the run on shutdown option wasn't the problem, the running task would NOT let windows terminate the program, thus stalling the shutdown process. I am not using the real time sync, but only scheduled tasks. I guess I have not made myself clear... I have a UPS which takes care of my power difficulties, but it only will run my machines for 10 to 20 minutes, tops. It has saved me time and again from my unreliable power during the rainy season. I have software monitoring the UPS that starts a windows shutdown automatically if the power is off for more than 2 minutes, the same as if I manually clicked on the start menu and did a shutdown. The UPS initiates an unattended shutdown in the same manner as it would do for any commercial windows file server. Chances are if my power is off for 2 minutes, it is going to stay off for a while, hence the automated shutdown procedure initiated by the UPS alert. In this case, I was simply doing a reboot after installing another software package and unaware the task was still in progress when I initiated the shutdown and restart. Since your program was in the middle of a task, it simply would not honor the windows request that the program terminate. I looked at the shutdown options you refer to, but it appears THAT is an option to RUN a task AT shutdown or logoff that was not otherwise scheduled. I do not want to run a task as part of a shutdown. Those options were/are unchecked. And therein lies the problem. This one task takes about an hour to run (the CRC option DOES take a lot of time), and if my power goes off, and the task is running, it will not let windows allow the task to terminate, so windows stalls waiting for the task to finish and my UPS will die on low voltage while windows is waiting. And I risk file system damage to both your program and windows itself if that is allowed to happen. I want the running task to terminate, to STOP immediately as part of the shutdown and NOT have to wait for it to finish a task in progress first. Your program DOES shutdown on request IF it is NOT running a task by the way. I had done numerous restarts before without a hitch. As I said, you need a way to abort a running task in the middle, to immediately cancel the currently running task and exit when windows asks you to terminate, so windows does not stall when it tries to close all of the running applications as it shuts down. What would have happened if I had used the task manager and simply terminated the program when it refused to stop in the middle of a running task? I waited rather than risk damage to the file system from your program being forced to close by the task manager ripping out it's guts. Your program does not respond gracefully to a request from the OS that it close IF a task is unfinished. It forces the OS to wait until it is finished. THAT is my definition of arrogance... "Sorry Windows, you'll have to wait, I'm not done yet... "

I am NOT complaining about the program or how it serves the sync task it was designed to accomplish. Simply put, it WORKS as advertised and I am pleased with how it keeps directories in sync. It is of great use to me to keep a portable in sync with a desktop/backup file server, and I have been using it almost daily since it was offered here. I am very happy with my experience. All I am asking is for a way to STOP the program immediately even if it is in the middle of a lengthy task, to abort the currently running task NOW and maybe do it over again next time, or save it's place so it can resume later. I can use the task manager to manually stop a running process, and force a program to close, but that sort of defeats the purpose of an automated unattended shutdown requested by the UPS. My UPS software can not force an application to close as I can manually. All it can do is request that windows shut down prior to losing power when the battery discharges. It isn't how the software runs, it is how it will not stop when windows politely asks it to as part of a shutdown. I apologize if I confused the issue. As I said, the application WORKS as advertised and I am a satisfied customer (albeit a free one), except for this one thing, that it will not stop in the middle of a task and exit gracefully to allow windows to complete an orderly shutdown.

I'll still use the program because it DOES work well as I said, but I will no longer allow rely on it to run unattended, just in case my UPS tries to do a shutdown when I am not around and it is in the middle of a task. I can't afford for your program to stall the shutdown process because it has not finished a running task. If my power goes off and it is running and I am here, I'll risk the task manager killing the process, otherwise it won't be running at all, just in case. This, appears to be an acceptable workaround, but does defeat the purpose of a scheduled task to run late at night.

I am merely making a suggestion for improvement in how the program operates which will benefit anyone else that comes after me. I can live with the workaround I've figured out. As a free user, I am not expecting any support of any kind nor am I asking for any. I am not asking that you fix this problem for ME. Like I said, I'm a happy camper, with a minor inconvenience that will not trouble most other users, AND I have an adequate workaround in place that will work for me indefinitely.

As a former programmer and systems analyst in a past life (I started in 1976 with machine language on the original 8080/Z80 8 bit CPU's from a KIT, well before the IBM PC was even a wet dream of Bill Gates, and retired finally in 2006 to "see the world", one state park at a time), I just thought you would like to know about this minor quirk in how your program operates... I certainly would want someone to tell ME if my program was ill-behaved...

Rather than communicate through these comments, if you have any further questions or if I can provide any other assistance or information that can help you resolve this issue, my email is:

The dots and such are to confuse any email address harvester that might cruise by... You can figure it out...

BDJ: Sorry to be so long winded...
Jun 23 2012 at 7:52pm Copy Link
Lewis Tian @Mario, thanks for your detail explanation. I think you are right that the task should stop automatically when the system shutting down. I'll ask developers to fix it and let you know ASAP.

Thanks for your suggestion!

Sheriff - I have a registered version, version 4.3.27 and if I update to version it ask me to register. After putting in the registration code, it says I can now use it with unlimited acces and close, but guess what, when I open the program again it does the same thing. Ask me to register.

Can someone tell me why this is happening...
