What are people saying about Bookmark Docs
Jim Maioriello I am very interested in this product, but I am a bit confused.  Is it possible to add bookmarks for word documents and excel spreadsheets?  It seems to be the case from the product website, but when I try using the program, the New Bookmark dialog does not pickup with bookmark for the doc/xls file. Otherwise, it seems to work fine for webpages, pdfs, and chm files.

Jim Maioriello Thanks Yaroslav.  That cleared it up.

I like this program a lot!

I can use it to easily keep a list of documents I need for various projects, to open the to the location where I left off.  Plus, I can use it to track the readinglist for document on my computer.  I read several paper books and maganzine article at the same time and I keep a stack of bookmarks handy.  Now, I have a nice tool to do the same on my pc!

It's light weight, simple to use and I quite useful!!

Harald Vogel Hello,

your product could be very helpful for me but I use an IE addon (Netcaptor) and a pdf alternative (PDFxchange) so your product doesn't recognize both of them. Is there a way to add these alternatives to be regognized to Bookmark docs as the type of file(s) are supported?

Thanks.

Glen Petrant You've got a winner here if you could just tweak it to bookmark and open supported document types through the end user's preferred document viewer/editor (e.g. Foxit is my preferred PDF document viewer), as suggested by Mr. Vogel above.

David Vital Application has good potential. A few suggestions to improve functionality to a point it would scale and be usable, and worth more of an investment.

1 - Support a tag hierarchy, as a flat tag structure will get too long

2 - Add a notes field to each bookmark properties to allow user to enter notes specific to a document

3 - Add search capability across the metadata only, not the document content

Thanks,
Dave

I may be mistaken but i can imagine something like this might use a significant portion of the computers resources to do all the tracking No?

yaroslav chizh Thank you Peter,

Bookmark Docs does not track application as Process Monitor. We use different methods of interprocess communications, for example COM and etc.
Therefore Bookmark Docs require little resources. On average, uses 15MB of memory and less then 1% CPU time.
You can run Bookmark Docs, open Windows Task Manager and see how much resources used on your machine.

Steven Avery An interesting concept. For google books and archive.org books this is not so much of a problem, since you can bookmark a page, although it might sometimes be helpful.

PDF and DOC and some other types of document files, however, this can be helpful, since a traditional bookmark manager makes one bookmark for the whole publication. Will check it out.

Presumably you can send your bookmarks over to another person running Bookmark Docs ? But not as a general web marker. Unless you add a web utility feature that runs through your server ? Do I have that right ? Would that be a plan for the future ?

Joel S Thanks Roger,

Site is working again now. I went ahead and bought it anyway but:

1. It produced this blue-screen error when trying to return to specific place in an RTF document:
PAGE FAULT IN NON-PAGED AREA
This a bit alarming, as it means something is awry at a very fundamental level. Haven't seen this error for several years - and even then it was a hardware issue. Machine is highly stable, on XP/SP2

2. Under the Bookmark Docs tag in the main screen we have
- Fast file access to active document (CHM) - works OK
- How to remember specific .... (PDF) Does not work
- How to return to same place (Word) Does not work.

Note: Have installed the prog on E: drive. Surely this wouldnt be a PATH issue?

3. Are the items in small blue font at the bottom

Remember information Remember same place

meant to be clickable links? If so, no action on these either.

Regards
J

Tazzie @ Yarolslav ... thanks so much for taking my suggestion under consideration! There are quite a few programs here that have been bought by regular BDJ customers, such as PDF Pro 10, Atlantis Word Processor, etc. Those would be good to put on your "To Do" list :) I would not pressure you to do it asap, but it would be nice if you could put them somewhere on your list.

I would be happy to send you a list of other programs to consider. I, too, have thousands of files and this seems like a good program to help organize my files. The problem I have is that I don't always use "mainstream" programs like MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, etc. It gets frustrating to see good programs I would like to use, only to find out they are developed to work only with "big name" programs. I really appreciate your willingness to include the more independent and open source programs to your list, and will be buying a license to support your hard work!

Yes you can can use address and for work with linkman. Thus you will store in Linkman not only bookmarks for a web, but also any application which supports Bookmark Docs.
E.g. to store in linkman links to slides powerpoint, or the necessary pages chm the help, or important places of documents word.
We can not only replace the other bookmark managers but also complement their capabilities.
We are not competitors with other bookmarks managers - we are friends :)

Steven Avery That is good to hear. I was too tired last night to really work with Bookmark Docs, to make the decision. I think a friend of mine is using it a bit on a research project, based on my pointing him to the earlier special, although he is not as Linkman oriented as am I.

If I have the time and energy I will play with it by tonight and shoot you an email with some thoughts. The problem in my case is that I am 98%+ google books and archive.org (that have page links) and only a few PDFs. (This is because most of the literature is on a Bible verse and was written in the 1700s and 1800s. and has been googleized.) Still it might be worthwhile as an additional plus in handy pointing.

And would make sense if I put my own articles in PDF format. Theoretically the PDF could be lodged on the cloud and I could use this as a direct pointing method to a chapter and page. It is true that PDFs tend to be unweildy in this regard, even if they have the whole Acrobat indexing structure. A lot of times you simply want to go to the page in question (or paragraph).

Am having difficulties accessing the 3V UK website (http://www.3vprepaid.com/), so I missed the BDJ offer yesterday, and it looks as though today's offer, too, if my email inquiry to 3V doesn't resolve the problem in time. :-(

K X A K,

I also use rtf files constantly. I think that the way that Bookmark Docs works (and is updated/upgraded), support is added for specific programs, rather than specific file formats (rtf, txt), so you would have to request the name of the program you use to edit those files and see if support can be added.

Like Tazzie, I'd also love to see Bookmark Docs support for bookmarking files created in Atlantis Word Processor, since I work primarily with rtf files--and Atlantis instead of Word.

Yes you are right. Bookmark Docs supports application.

If you have bookmarks but supported application is not installed on computer then Bookmark Docs search other application.
For example, you save pdf bookmark for Foxit Reader on your comp. And after you open on laptop. If laptop has not Foxit Reader then Bookmark Docs will search. Are there any pdf applications on laptop? If Bookmark Docs found Adobe Reader then use this application.

Therefore we add support for applications. But info about format is important too.

Thank you!

H. H: Hallo,
tried it for the first time, and it seems to be an interesting piece of software. The suport for windows eplorer,... is a useful addition.
Does ist work with txt-files, created by editor (windows xp media ed., sp3) -? If not, the support of the windows editor would be really fine (did not get it working until now).
What I miss is the abilit to organize the links in folders and subfolders, so that the system-tray-icon menu does notbecome too crowded, when saving many links. Of course you have the taf- feature, but it´s not a replacement for a more organized structure in categories/subcaegories. Do you perhaps plan to implement this feature in the future?

Steven Avery Hi

Since I had this on my puter earlier, my attempt to try the new version gives me only "Trial Period Expired". Granted, I could go to another puter but this one is my work puter tonight.

Shouldn't a new release reset the trial period possibility ?

==============

Anyway, here is my question. If I bookmark p. 17 of a PDF. Is that bookmark only internal to Bookmark Docs ? If so, does Bookmark Docs have a keyword system for searching and remembering what bookmarks you created. There is a need to bookmark specific pages of PDFs, but only if the bookmark can be retrieved easily.

Let us say I create a hyperlink in BookmarkDocs, and I want to launch it in Linkman, my bookmark manager. How is the intelligence created to access the BookmarkDocs knowledge of where this is in the PDF ? How do the programs interact ?

Write please to supportbookmarkdocs.com. We will try to help you with trial.

The most simple way is to open information in PDF reader go to important places and add bookmark. You can just copy hyperlink to bookmark and don't save bookmark. Then this hyperlink can be inserted in link manager. Bookmark Docs doesn't change contents of your documents. Hyperlink has information how to open and find your information.

Brenda Gann I tried it... every time I right click to get the options different things happen. Sometimes I get no menu at all. Eventually I got it to prompt me to make a bookmark. But then it seemed it wanted to save a file. I did not know if this is normal operation or not. Also I had to manually change the settings for the app in the system tray to get it to work at all. Most users probably don't know how to do this. I am an experienced user and I still have not figured out how to make it work as advertised. Don't know if this is just me or if many people have these issues. I am on Windows 7.

Amit Hi,

Some queries,

1) Can we add notes or description too, to bookmarks, apart from putting tags on them ?

2) How is this better than linkman pro ?

3) Smart shortcuts - what are they and how different than normal bookmarks in this app only ?

4) will upgrades be free for 1 year - even upgrade to v7.0 ?

5) "New Feature! Ultra-fast file access from context menus" - how is this different from normal access to the bookmarks from bookmark docs ?

6) Is there a search facility in bookmark docs - for searching by -
a) Description or note i have added to it
+
b) url of the web page
+
c) filename of the file

7) Can this software take to some other alternatives of some apps - like metapad or editpad too that i use as notepad replacement ? or can it in anyway open the document in the app that i have set as the default for opening any kind of document - say i have set any other text editor as my default app for text files ?

8) Can i specify the browser with which to open the bookmarked webpages - or it uses the deafult browser only - for eg. i may want firefox portable or opera portable or maxthon ( REALLY ) or like.

9) Is the "licensed to user" license means i can use on even more than 2, say pcs or laptops that are of my own only ? or maximum 2 ?

thanks.

Steven Avery Hi,

The instructions should be cleaned up by a native English speaker.

Amit, I am a super Linkman aficionado. However, Linkman does not have a way to differentiate within a PDF document, since the whole document is one url to Windows. (Unlike, e.g. google books, or Archive.org, where you can have a url or two for each page.) Sometimes you may have a 100 page PDF document in research mode where directly linking from keywords to the topic on p. 77 would be very nice. (Occasionally I mention this to Linkman too.)

Bookmark Docs seems (at a quick try) to be pretty decent within a single document, for notes and bookmarks, but does not seem (so far) to offer a cross-document combination keyword searching. For me limiting its usefulness really to large singular, unsplit PDFs. (There are also one or two competitors to compare.)

As with Sticky Notes, working by Window names is something I don't like much for what is really native browser stuff. Since a PDF can usually/always come up in a browser I would like a PDF bookmark program to work in that mode, page by page or point by point (or integrate with PDF X-Change viewer).

I ran into the same thing with sticky notes, where Internote, while rudimentary as a sticky note, was URL based and therefore better than Sticky Notes or Notezilla for Web stickies.

There is some potential here, and for some needs it might be very fine, so I do not want to discourage Bookmark Docs trials, and want to hear their future enhancement directions.

VLM yaroslav chizh - I find your licensing policy a bit confusing. From the BDJ Policy tab:

- After you make a purchase of this BitsDuJour discount promotion, Bookmark Docs may be used indefinitely.

AND

- Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 12 months. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted by 40%.

AND

- Support is provided for the lifetime of the product.

I did buy this product a bit more than a year ago but never got a round tuit, so I never actually used it. But I suspect that it holds considerable potential. When I received a renewal notice, I wrote to this effect, and your team was kind enough to extend my license for a year. Thank you.

My confusion is this: Is it the case that one can use the product indefinitely and receive support indefinitely (as indicated above), but only receive updates past 1 year via subscription? Is this your intention?

If yes, then my second question: If the subscription prices is discounted 40% and today's offer is discounted 50%, can one use today's offer, in effect, to renew one's subscription down the road?

Thank you kindly! And thank you for participating in your own promotion, as some vendors don't. :):)

Finally ... and not least by any means ...

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all. (If you're not American, just think of it as a time to reflect with gratitude on all that you have, all that you are, and all that you have the potential to become. :):)

VLM yaroslav chizh - Regarding this response from you:

- Bookmark Docs does not monitor file location. Bookmark Docs just asks for file location 1 time if can not find file.

Once the user provides the location, does Bookmark Docs then remember the location within the file (assuming that it is the same)?

Also, if I have several bookmarks, and I tell the first one where a moved file is located, does the program then keep that information and apply it to the remaining bookmarks, at least as I open each of them?

Bookmark Docs is not integrated with PIM managers. You can copy url of bookmark and add to PIM. So you can extend PIM features, for example you can store links to pdf or word documents in your PIM.

But seems we need to find better solution like export from Bookmark Docs to another PIM software.

I can bookmark word & outlook files, but I have not been able to get it to work with PDF files using Nitro Pro 9.5.1.5.

Nitro Pro is listed as a compatible PDF reader but it gives a different logo than the Version 9.

Should I be able to bookmark PDF files open in Nitro Pro 9.5.1.5.?
