Glen Hilton After installing Chameleon System Manager this was the response from AnVir Task Manager.

" Chameleon System Manager by NeoSoft Tools

Status: Definitely not required - typically viruses, spyware, adware and 'resource hogs'.
Description: Browser hijacker, redirecting to NCM Search."

Spy Extractor Pro did not recognize this software as a problem and it appears to use far less resources than AnVir Task Manager. The fact that both programs perform some similar duties would suggest that AnVir Task Manager has no intention of promoting this app, quite the opposite. Can you confirm that Chameleon System Manager does not interfere or hijack the browser settings in any way?.

Can Chameleon block/delay certain non-essential Windows processes?

If so, that would be terrific.

Evgeni Shmakov Hello Glen

AnVir isn't a antivirus or other security tool. It's just yet another task manager.

Joshua Cowan I have used Chameleon Startup/System Manager (as well as the Task Manager beta) for a while, now. It is an superb example of excellent software: well designed, efficient, inexpensive, responsive developer, generous licensing policy, and broadly useful. I haven't found a better startup manager, and I've tried most of them. It would take too long to detail all the things I find useful about the software, but that doesn't mean there's a steep learning curve. It's one of those rare, well-designed programs that's immediately useful/sane but infinitely flexible as you gain familiarity with it. It's mandatory for any machine that I use on a regular basis at this point. Besides the usual stuff, I like being able to move items between startup locations (HKLM, HKCU, Startup, etc) with a radio button/checkbox. I also use the delayed startup extensively; I sometimes right-click the monitor in the systray and "Exit" on bootup to get a machine with very little running at startup. BTW, the long-running component, the "monitor", is very lean: it's about 5MiB + 7MiB for the 64-bit helper on my system. It's a steal at $30, but for $15... just get it, seriously, even if you don't think you need it. I originally bought it for one specific feature. If your experience is anything like mine, you'll find yourself using it more and more over time.

There is only x86 version with x64 extension. So Chameleon has full support for Windows x64.

Evgeni Shmakov Hello, Andrew

Yes, the internet connection is required for activation, but an offline activation is also possible.
You can install the program on 3 your own computers during 1 month.
P.S. I have changed the policy, you can use the program on your different computers at the same time.

Software Guy License is still unclear. One place says non-concurrent, the other says concurrent. Huge difference. So, is it one install only, or is it up to 3 (concurrent) installs for a single user? there is no sense in installing and configuring a startup manager for one computer then removing it to install it on another computer (non-concurrent). It is less effort to just disable this or that in windows. Please explain.

Now, on the flip side, I have chameleon and it is an excellent startup manager, allowing several configurations which might normally conflict - like a book scanner and a photo scanner - to coexist on the same computer. the user simply picks the configuration he wants to start for that use. Can easily optimize startup for games, or photo/video editing or whatever suits you. Excellent - I highly recommend.

Evgeni Shmakov Hello William,

You can install the program on up to 3 computer you own per month.
And you can use the program on all these computers at the same time (you don't need to remove or disable the program).
I hope now it's enough clear.

kevin seymour What are the limitations of programs that can or cannot be delayed?

I use Winpatrol right now to delay programs but it seems allot of programs you want delayed cannot be done with Winpatrol.

It seems the programs that automatically put themselves back in start-up cannot be delayed with Winpatrol.

Evgeni Shmakov Hello Kevin,
I don't recommend to add a delay for security programs (antiviruses, firewalls).
Also sometimes there is small problems with programs that put themselves back in start-up at Windows shutdown.

Of course, Chameleon prevent to remove its from start-up. Otherwise, the delayed programs may not be started.

RM This is by far the best startup manager program out there. I use it to actually delay my startup because I have 20 programs which I use frequently and need them all running at boot. I don't mind waiting an extra minute or two. I try to run 20 programs without this startup manager and half of their system tray icons Windows won't even be able to load due to the other 100+ system services, drivers, codecs, and tasks it's trying to load at the same time. You can select the exact time delay by minutes or seconds or order for each program. It automatically block unwanted programs from starting up on their own and it will automatically saves any changes you make.

Mitchell Kastner I too have a large number of start up programs and I love the option to delay the start up of some resource hogs---all purchased on BDJ---for many minutes. I remedy the problem now by disabling these programs under Windows Services and then manually restarting the service. These programs start once I start them under services eventhough, using Win Optomizer 7, I have disabled them in my Start-up group.

So my question is: what is the point of delaying the startup of these programs if they will start anyway if their Service setting is set to "Automatic" start. If I delay their start in Chamelon and if I set their setting in Services to "Manual" will they start once Chamelon tells them to start?
Apr 2 2011 at 1:16am Copy Link
0
Evgeni Shmakov Hello Mitchell,

Current version doesn't support for Services. I think this feature will be available in version 4.
The point of Chameleon is to start a computer smoothly (with delay or priority and controlling computer's resource usage), start only programs you need right now (you can create many configurations) and start the programs in order you need.
Also Chameleon controls of adding new programs to start-up and prevent irritating startup programs from constantly adding themselves to the startup list.

Software Guy The task manager is 50% off today thanks to neosoft. The task manager represents a good value to find where your resources have suddenly gone. Bitsdujour users may also consider Neuber's security task manager and their free svchost process analyzer as the king of task managers. Another is Anvir's task manager which in pro version (pricey) can delay startup programs. Both neuber and anvir are portable. But in any case do not pass up chameleon offered here with 3 installs - it is essential for the power computer user.

Mitchell Kastner Evgeni,

Perhaps you did not understand my last question: Under Window Services if I changed the setting of a service to "Manual" and if under Chamelon, I delayed the startup of the same program, would the program start up when Chamelon turned it on?

Answer: Yes, yes yes. I am buying your wonderful pogram now.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens Hi Evgeni,

I'm very interested in both Startup Manager Pro and Task Manager Pro. I tried the Startup Manager on a Windows XP Pro system (SP3, all patches applied), but I get a bunch of error messages:

"Exception EAccessViolation in module monitor.exe at 014E0AF9. Access violation at address at 014E0AF9. Write of address 00000002."

"Exception EOSError in module monitor.exe at 00022E7C. System Error. Code: 5. Zugriff verweigert."
(Access denied)

"Die Anweisung in '0x0063c898' verweist auf Speicher in '0x0293451d'. Der Vorgang 'read' konnte nicht auf dem Speicher durchgeführt werden. Klicken Sie auf 'OK', um das Programm zu beenden."
(The instruction at "0x0063c898" referenced memory at "0x0293451d". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program.)

"Runtime Error 216 at 00404CDE"

Some of these messages pop up several times. The program itself works, and the configurations are loaded correctly, though.

For the time being, is it enough to disable some of the options ("Monitor real time changes in the startup list" and the options in "Startup Manager When the startup list is changed") to prevent the monitor.exe from starting? I'm really willing to buy the program, and if you think the problem can probably be solved, I'll do so.

Thanks in advance for your help!

kevin seymour Very nice programs! You should combine Start-up Manager and Task Manager at a later time as this would be a great combo.

The only thing I don't like is the memory manager, not that it is bad, I just never liked Mem Managers. Trying out the default settings in TM to see how the mem manager works with Win 7. Also, please don't add any AV to your TM I really don't see the need.

It depends on Genie Timeline. Chameleon starts only the program as I said. Probable Genie Timeline doesn't check if the service is started.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens Hello Evgeni,

thanks for your help. After installing Task Manager Pro, the problem seems to have vanished - at least I couldn't reproduce it since then. I purchased both programs.

Disabling the delay feature wouldn't have been an option (in fact, Startup Manager Pro replaced another software that delayed the start of some programs), so I'm happy that it seems to work now.

I'll contact you because of a little problem with Task Manager Pro. ;-)

Wally L Evgeni - I have heard good things about Your Products - BUT I found 2 problems:

1. I understand that the buyer only has one month after purchase to activate their purchase, what does somebody do if they have to carry out a full re-install, for example 15 months after first purchasing the product my online friends tell me it wasn't possible or took a lot of emails to finally correct

2. Your WEBSITE is REALLY POOR at providing important information: for example there is no mention of Online License Activation & there is no explanation about how to carry out this activation procedure or any time frames

Software Guy Please help with the clarification on the licensing. The policy says: Online license activation is required with a hardware footprint, and 3 installations per footprint. Then it says that it is licensed per user. And your old comments allow installation "on up to 3 computers per month".
The question I would like clarified, as user and fan of chameleon startup is that we are OK on up to 3 installs with different footprints - meaning desktop, laptop and netbook-correct?
Next, though there are many startup managers including free ones, and many come with delayed startup - very useful - chameleon allows you to save configurations, so if you are booting the system for graphics, you can just load the necessary startup programs, or if you are just going to surf the web, just load the bare basics - like maybe CaptureSaver or whatever you might use to grab and save internet screens. It is here that the strength of Chameleon lies. You may have loaded tons of programs, but with selectable startup, you can keep your machine lean and fast and tailored to the use at hand. Another example - editing videos - I don't care how much memory you have, it never seems enough. With chameleon configuring startup, you can keep external program usage to a minimum. Not everyone needs these functions, but if you do, IMHO, Chameleon is a great value at a very good price. here on BDJ.

Steven Avery Hi,

And I agree that the configurations are very nice, and I am just starting to use Chameleon more, with that in mind. I noticed the pause on startup waiting for the choice (I asked for it in config) and was very happy with the concept. It really is better than virtual desktops in some ways, since you can run clean, more specific.

Chameleon and Win Patrol are my big two start programs these days and I see them as complimentary, WIn Patrol the focus on security, Chameleon the focus on end-user experience. Only a couple of others are even competitive.

I do think that the Chameleon product line is a bit diffuse, and I have only felt to buy the Startup program, but that is very fine.

In honor of the Bits special I just opened up a bunch of the columns and saw things like startup filters and themes.

This program simply works. The only reason to pass on it is if you are already filled to the gills with a good program.

Steven Avery Hi Evgeni,

I am using this BIts as a time to review and learn and add a suggestion and question or two for you.

First, I want to tell you that your program is truly superb, fine art.

Could you add a user's note column to Options-Columns ? That is where we would note what we find out about a program that is important. Such as what it does if the name or path is cryptic even after we add the other columns. Or ideas we have related to startup or anything.

Small suggestion
Options--Preferences--Notify
"When Items are removed"
Start with default "Yes" .. better security, bad guys can try to remove the anti-malware programs.

Very small glitch
On "add a new item" (nicely designed) I put in Soluto from an icon, and it did not clear the name-description of the previous one. (Probably because Soluto was blank.)

Normally we would put this stuff on Donationcoder, look for a thread there today as well !

Likely more coming. Thanks.

Evgeni Shmakov Hi Steven, Thank you for the suggestions! I've added them in a to-do list and I'll think about them.
I'll try to reproduce the bug, thank you for the information.
Recently I asked cthorpe about the putting Chameleon Window Manager but he didn't answer.

Steven Avery Hi,

Kewl.

On the Soluto it was an add after another add (TaskCatcher) not just a first add, which I did not check.. I do like that you gave multiple easy ways to add a program, it is that type of extra attention in design that really distinguishes Chameleon.

On Windows 7, the sort tabs do not seem to be activated, on the system I just checked. (It looks like I may buy a second license today.). Capture, path, mem description, etc.

J S I was on your website(s) 1 week ago and, as a Chameleon Software PAiD License owner, unless You have changed them in the meantime the following i.m.h.o. apply:

Sad to say, but You still have an extremely poor websites that really needs improvement in the following areas:

1. displaying the license terms and conditions (including what happens when an upgrade comes out such as Window Manager),

2. explaining or describing the activation process & conditions especially considering the Licenses are Per USER and not per computer.

3. adding a check box during the purchase process or as a separate procedure to NOTiFY by eMAiL of minor updates & major upgrades to the program you've purchased, or, all NeoSoft (Chameleon Software) programs.

FiNALLY I'm very glad to say that in some other aspects, Evgeni, You do things extremely well, even to the point of continually developing your VERY Useful freeware programs.

Steven Avery Hi,

Yep, Chameleon Startup is simply very sensible. I consider this his flagship product, although some day I hope to shake out the others.

Just did my second license, on the understanding that between home and work I really install on more than 3 puters. Evgeni tries to play fair, and can use our support, keep improving !

I'll mention what I consider the alternatives (other than WinPatrol which is as much complementary than competitive) ...

Startup Organizer from Metaproducts, StartEd from Outertech and the Anvir task manager.

(There are lots of techie ones like Autoruns too).

All are fine, with pluses, but I think that Chameleon does this function the best so far. With some room to spare. Good for power user and newbie. No knock on the others intended, below them there are dozens more, not even close.

WinPatrol (and maybe his new TaskCatcher) being a different product. I consider that a security product, and Evgeni has not tried to specialize on that focus.

If I remember, Anvir has some strengths in security and also in multi-function, it just is not as stable, well-supported, and not anywhere as strong on the pure startup task configuration and delay issues.

Nick Kobe I have two questions in regards to the software and the licensing:

1. What differences are there between the Startup Managers in System Mechanic Professional and Glary Utilities that would warrant buying Chameleon Startup Manager over these other programs when they cost nearly the same but have significantly broader application as utilities over Chameleon?
2. In addition to the above the fore mentioned these software utilities allow unlimited installation on computers owned by a single user. Objectively, wouldn't it be better to purchase one of the over a program that has one utility and limited user license?

Though I like the features offered in Chameleon I find it difficult to make a purchase due to the pricing relative to the licensing since I own 1 desktop, 2 laptops, 1 tablet, and 1 netbook.

Evgeni Shmakov 1. Right now I can't see the programs you mentioned due to problems with internet but I belive that best features of Chameleon are:
Configuration support, Startup order (it's dynamic delay and it detects automatically. It helps to start faster but smoothly), Ability to start programs when CPU and HDD usage is low, Automatically disabling self-added programs, User friendly interface and so on. You can read more on the site: http://www.chameleon-mana...p-manager/
2. It's possible to increase the installation counts if you the only user.

Nick Kobe Thank you for your reply and the information. I appreciate your answer to #2 and would certainly take you up on your offer. Unfortunately, it appears your reply is to late. I posted my questions last night before 11:00PM and my comments were apparently under "review" until this morning. It took more than 7 hours for them to get posted so that you could reply. This isn't the first time I have had this happen. I wonder how long it will take these comments to get posted. The number of installation per user is my major concern as I have a computer for about everything!

Steven Avery Hi,

Nick, Evegeni is helpful to work with, so I suggest you simply review this and that by email. He will simply continue with understanding.

As to the programs you mention, they are part of a dozen or two "toolkit" programs , "jacks of all trades (masters of none)". They tend to be rather generic on the specific features and utility. And many of their more important features can be found in better form in specialty programs like ccleaner or revo uninstaller, often freeware. If you spend an hour with their startup program and with Chameleon, even if you do not play with the configurations and delays, you should be able to see the difference. You may decide the difference is not big enough for a cash outlay, but at least you will have a good comparison.

On the startup programs, I have seen no freeware or bundled programs that really handle startups like Chameleon and Win Patrol. Did a large post on this at Donationcoder a few years back.

My suggestion, ask Evgeni for a special one-person 10-puter (or so) type of license.

Amit I really like this company's softwares. however the features of v4 which are said or requested here and to be brought about in v4 seem to be much better. If this purchase would have let me upgrade to v4, then wud have been much easier to buy.

And when is the v4 coming. waiting!

And bring on the deal for task manager pro. thanks.

Also @evgeni, i would like to say that you add 1 more feature to the upcoming version of window manager pro - which i did buy earlier - and if have to buy again for the new version, will maybe buy again - but the feature is -
making any window ontop by autoscanning every some seconds (like zmover does - see my comments here - http://www.bitsdujour.com...nager-pro/) and zmover doesnt slow down even.

Evgeni Shmakov Hello Amit,

1. If you bought the program a two month before the release, the new key will cost you $14.95. Otherwise, you can get the key to the new version completely free of charge. But I don't expect that version 4 will be available during 2 month.

2. I have this feature in the to-do list and I'll implement it surely.

Steven Avery Hi,

I just want to say that I like Chameleon a lot, got it, I think, on an earlier BIts.

My systems use Chameleon and Win Patrol (I consider them as complementary, I use Chameleon for loading configurations, Win Patrol is more a security tool.

Speaking generally, a good real dedicated startup tool is close to a no-brainer. That is a weak point in the other security suites and systems. Don't settle for a swiss army knife version, get one of the real good ones. (e.g. Metaproducts and Outertech would be my go-to if I did not have Chameleon.)

Extend it Bits !
