What are people saying about Chameleon Task Manager

Gonzo Hi. I'm interested in this app; however I'd first like to know how does this compare to the following?
-Sysinternals Process Explorer
-AnVir Task Manager Pro
-eXtended Task Manager
-Process Lasso

Jul 4 2011 at 7:38am Copy Link
Jason Howard Apart from XTM (eXtreme Task Manager) I use/own all the products you mention.
Process Explorer (PE) is excellent as an information/diagnostic tool. PE is mostly aimed at diagnostics - it works in the "now". It is not really aiming at the same purpose as Chameleon Task Manager (CTM) and Process Lasso (PL). I tend to go back and forward with PE or Process Hacker as my Task Manager Replacement.
The Process Lasso website says "Process Lasso is NOT yet another task manager; it is a process optimization and automation utility." CTM could also truthfully use the same statement. I guess it comes down to how you prefer to optimize or automate your system. CTM gives you lots of options. PL gives you lots of options.
I won't comment on Anvir (other than to say AnVir is now shelf-ware. No updates or activity from the developer in over a year. The competition has been hard at work, and now Anvir really looks dated and is missing the features and capabilities shown by the competition - yet still Anvir is almost double the price. Asleep at the wheel?).
Really the only tool you mention that I think is really comparable to CTM is PL. (and I like and am using both).
Jul 7 2011 at 3:22am Copy Link
Gonzo Thanks a lot Jason!

I already own Anvir, and plan to purchase PL... though I may end up buying all three mentioned above :)
I haven't had much time to test them all thouroughly.

As a user/owner of all these:
-how do they compare to XTM?
-would you say there are 2 that complement each other well enough so as to not have to use any other?
Jul 7 2011 at 4:42pm Copy Link
Tim Knowles I once installed this to try it out but Norton 360 immediately killed it without asking me if that was OK. The awful behavior of Norton aside, any workaround for this problem?
Jul 7 2011 at 9:49pm Copy Link
Jason Howard There should be some way to tell Nortons to exclude CTM from protection (or disable Nortons altogether during the CTM setup). If Nortons is detecting CTM as Malware - then you could contact Symantec and submit the program details saying you feel it is being detected as a false positive. With Antivirus these days I always have it ask before any action (like deleting files) - as false positives can happen anytime.
Jul 7 2011 at 11:36pm Copy Link
Michael K Personally I've never let any Norton product near any of my machines for over 10 years. Maybe it's changed but I always found them intrusive and resource hungry.
Jul 8 2011 at 11:58am Copy Link
Robert S I normally would be very interested in a tool like this but i need something portable. And for something that installs to a single machine the license is very strict. I experiment on my machine frequently in order to learn new things and image my machine often. It's just not practical to limit a person to 3 installs. The developer may think the average person doesn't image there machine often but the average person is less likely to buy the product since they won't know what they are looking at. Try to give a better solution to us poor IT guys. We need portable tools like sysinternals.
Jul 8 2011 at 12:50pm Copy Link
Cassiano qs how it´s memory optimizer compare to Cacheman ?
Jul 8 2011 at 2:06pm Copy Link
Evgeni Shmakov Robert S: It's impossible to make the portable version because the program saves programs settings etc which depends on program's full path (which different on each PC).
Regarding to limitation to 3 installs: it's limitation on different PC during 1 month. Also it's possible to increase the limit.

Cassiano qs: Cacheman has more features but CTM has all important features.

Evgeni Shmakov To everybody: Today you can buy Chameleon Startup Manager with 50% discount too:
NeoSoft Tools - Jul 10 2011 at 1:29am Copy Link
Nelson Carvalho I bought the MSM a few months ago. It is an excellent product. I recommend.
There are other good products on the market, including free. I already tested several. I chose the CSM for the quality, features, information it provides about the programs and support.
Jul 10 2011 at 6:42am Copy Link
Cassiano qs Evgeni, do you plan to release a Service Manager?
Jul 10 2011 at 7:56am Copy Link
Evgeni Shmakov Cassiano qs: The next program will be Chameleon Window Manager Pro (Now it's in alpha stage).
After it most probable I will develop Service Manager.
NeoSoft Tools - Jul 10 2011 at 8:08am Copy Link
Robert S Evgeni,

Regarding a portable version, couldn't you just launch the application to a window that asks you if you wan to create a profile for a new machine or launch a profile of a presaved machine. The name can be either maunaiy create or it can pull from the "Full Computer Name" in the properties of my computer. The settings can be saved within the profile.
Jul 10 2011 at 8:23am Copy Link
Randy Niven Save your money and get Sysinternals Process Explorer, it works well, starts up fast, etc. Also, how Norton products, or any software for that matter, ran 10 years ago has nothing to do with how they currently run and work.
Jul 10 2011 at 8:44am Copy Link
Jim McGowan I haven't used Chameleon Task Manager but I am a fairly long-time user of Chameleon Startup Manager and that program is the best in its class IMO; and I have tried most of them.

Besides that, Evgeni provides excellent support - and he will probably recognize me from this post as I have harassed him endlessly with questions and issues and he has always responded quickly and resolved any issues for me - even though 75% of the time the problem was probably me or my computer setup!

Jul 10 2011 at 8:48am Copy Link
Silat This is the pro version?

And is there a discount for your startup manager pro also?
Jul 10 2011 at 10:06am Copy Link
Evgeni Shmakov Robert S: Thank you for the suggestion. I'll think about it.

Hi Jim! Yes I recognized you :)

L L: Yes, it's the Pro version and you can buy the CSM with 50% discount too:

Jul 10 2011 at 4:38pm Copy Link
Evgeni Shmakov Cassiano qs: It will be available later.

L L: Thank you!

James Kenney: You can buy the programs here:

Frank Stephens Jason Howard, AnVir has all sorts of features which the others don't. I have a license for it, but it has coding issues and development does appear to have ceased, so I no longer use it. Too many people went for the free version over the paid version, which has far more features. It doesn't make sense to use Chameleon Task Manager and Process Lasso at the same time, you're likely to run into problems. Personally, I preferred AnVir's approach of letting you specify a priority to always be applied rather than realtime priority juggling. For tracking what's going on, I find the Windows 7 Resource Monitor to be extremely useful (much improved over earlier Windows versions).
Jul 10 2011 at 8:21pm Copy Link
garrett james Presto Magic what a beautiful piece of software. Somehow a week ago, i managed to kill part of windows task manager that show the apps so i was stuck only with the Process window

OK so i downloaded this last nite, and it shows so much more info. Not only that but clicked the option that let Cham task manger manage system performance ......

My PC has not hung up once today since installation. Right now i have 40 tabs open in chrome (and have got none of those SPLAT notices) 20 in opera, 10 in firefox and only using 25% cpu and 3 no 2.5 gbs of RAM.

Firefox now runs 10 times faster and does not hang on me. Both opera and chrome are running faster more stable. Must have found something jamming up the works in the background that system mechanic, and system suite 11 could not fix with their utilities.

AS far as i am concerned this thing just paid for itself in one day saving lost time, let alone the aggravation of waiting while firefox bogs down
Jul 10 2011 at 8:32pm Copy Link
James Kenney OK, thanks! Ordered the combo. Do not know if I need the volume one, but figured at this price, why not try it.

Richard Paris Hi Recently purchased Chameleon Startup Manager for use on Windows 7 x64 system. Interested in purchasing Task Manager. Are Task Manager and Startup Manager designed to work in harmony?
Nov 30 2011 at 12:14pm Copy Link
Evgeni Shmakov Yes, the both programs works fine together.
In fact the only resident program (which sits in the system tray) does all work. It helps to save PC's resource.
NeoSoft Tools - Nov 30 2011 at 12:21pm Copy Link
Dmitry S Bought this program under previous offer and It works perfectly for me all this time. It's highly configurable and has many options like counters and real-time tuning options. Also it does not eat much RAM and has a system resource monitoring and a logging features.

Many thanks to Evgeni!

There is only two things in this program i wish to improve -
1) reduce the loading time of the Task Manager after pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Del (in case of replacing the windows task manager with the Chameleon Task Manager).
2) adding the lifetime license.

Kind Regards,
Dec 1 2011 at 3:55am Copy Link
Evgeni Shmakov Thank you Dmitry.

1) Soon I'll improve it a bit. Also I will increase the performance in version 4.
2) Probably, it will be available in version 4 because there are some technical limitations to make it in the current version.

P.S. Version 4 will be available in several month (maybe 6-12). In fact it isn't under development yet.
If anyone missed any features in CTM, I can consider them and maybe I'll implement them in version 4.

Nico Westerdale Walter, the licensing info can be found under the "Policy" tab on this page on the right.
BitsDuJour Admin - Dec 1 2011 at 5:31am Copy Link
Evgeni Shmakov Walter, I'll update the site soon.

In fact the only limitation is that you can't install the program on more than 3 different PC during 1 month, but you can activate the program on the same PC without any limitations.

So you can activate the program any time.

Dec 1 2011 at 6:24am Copy Link
J S That's good news about the activation and no time limits on installations.

I bought a license last year but never got around to installing the program as I was changing PC's a fair bit.

I have just bought a new computer and now that I've had my memory prompted I will install CTM soon.
I'm like some other people (who have left comments) CTM is a great program but they all have their strenght's and weaknesses and I sometimes use them all.
Dec 1 2011 at 8:39am Copy Link
Wally L Hi Evgeni, I discovered your program a week ago and I'd have to say that your website -for all programs not just the Task Manager, lacks much information.

I couldn't find any information about the licensing, inparticular time limits on installations, OR, even how to go about the actual license activation process.

For example I'm very interested to buy this now (to not miss out on the good price) BUT I do not want to install the program until March/April 2012 which is when I'm getting new computers.

Question: Can i buy now and install much later and how is the license activation actually done?
Dec 1 2011 at 9:46am Copy Link
Evgeni Shmakov Walter, something wrong with the comments because I already replied above:

In fact the only limitation is that you can't install the program on more than 3 different PC during 1 month, but you can activate the program on the same PC without any limitations.

So you can activate the program any time.

Steven Avery Hi

A while back, I wrote up a review of 3 of the very best startup programs at DonationCoder, Chameleon was one of the three, and Evgeni has always been a gem developer, friendly, enhancing the programs.

Anvir, mentioned above, was not in the three, they have good software but less reputation for stability and user-developer interaction. Which is more important than quantity of features. Not a knock, just the rep.

WinPatrol was one of the three, and is more of a specialist on the security aspects . Less elegant for the daily use, but a fine product, and there is nothing wrong with WP + Chameleon in tandem. Metaproducts Startup Organizer was the third, a good product but I do not think the licensing and developer interaction is as strong as with Evgeni.

You can get by with freeware (e.g DTaskManager was good, at least on XP) but this is such a basic function that I probably will go with Evgeni tonight. I've been using the free version of the Startup for a while.

The biggest "problem" :) with Chameleon Software is that you can often benefit greatly with just the free versions. However, I highly recommend going the next mile if you have not set in these two realms and have the few $ and want some more features.

The generous licensing is a big, big plus. The fact that you get the Task and Startup at a reasonable price through Bits on your stable of personal PCs makes it fine. Having a developer who listens and acts and cares makes all the difference.

Steven Avery

Eddie Tex Anvir is pretty much a dead product in my eyes. It was offered recently on BDJ. The comment thread on that deal provides most of the information you need to know where the product is now. Also, if I'm not mistake, I think their licensing is per-machine (but I could be wrong). Anyway, CTM is a real good option here. Good value with a very reasonable licensing model.
Dec 1 2011 at 8:42pm Copy Link
h yl is is lifetime update.

Nico Westerdale All too common Ron, Norton and Symantec are very over-zealous in their false positives.
BitsDuJour Admin - May 11 2012 at 9:22am Copy Link
Evgeni Shmakov Ron, Could you say which Symantec program do you use?
I've installed Norton Internet Security 2012 and found no problems.
NeoSoft Tools - May 11 2012 at 10:01am Copy Link
DroidLuvr @Evgeni: I also receive that error from Norton, and I am running Norton Security Suite version 5.1xx (it comes free with my cable subscription or I wouldn't be using Norton, but since it's free...)

Just FYI... I've had to turn off Norton, and change the .exe file to another name, so it doesn't delete the file right away. Then, I turn Norton off again to install, and then turn it back on. A big hassle, and you can go to Norton to get your site WHITE LSITED if you can show it isn't malicious; it's a pretty easy process...

I'm thinking I'll wait for version 4 if upgrades are not free.
May 11 2012 at 12:26pm Copy Link
Evgeni Shmakov DroidLuvr, Thank you for the information.
In fact the program was added to the white-list recently.

Fletch I'm using NIS 2011. I have a VM running the 2013 Beta. It installed OK there, so I think it's just the site hosting the download that it was complaining about, and not the download itself.

My $.02 worth anyway...

May 11 2012 at 2:47pm Copy Link
DroidLuvr Thank you Evengi: I'm really liking it, so I guess I'll go with version 3 for now and pay the 50% when the upgrade comes out :)

However, first, could you clarify the license policy? I'm always confused with the "per user" and the activation too. I have a small home network; how many machines can I use this on if I am the only user?

May 11 2012 at 5:30pm Copy Link
Fletch "Checking program files for modifications and notifications about new programs"

This interest me but I'm unable to see it in action. I see the options are checked to show a message in the screen corner when a new program is detected, but I don't know how to trigger this. What defines a "new" program?

The help is sparse. No help on the web site either. This tool needs some comprehensive documentation. No FAQ. No Forum.

I'm with Joshua, without activation, I'd get it on the chance that I'd eventually learn how to use and like it.
May 11 2012 at 9:53pm Copy Link
Evgeni Shmakov DroidLuvr, You can activate 3 times per month. If you need more activations you can contact me.

Ron, this feature notifies about an event in the screen corner. "New" means that a program never start on PC before. It starts to work in a week after first start of Chameleon to prevent "false positive"
