CFGuy Hi - Software description states "After you purchase ChrisPC VideoTube Downloader Pro, it may be used for 12 months." Does this mean that, if one chooses to, they will still have the software on their system and continue to use the software (without any new software updates), or is there something built into the software that somehow "deactivates it" - and thus prohibits further use of any type after the first 12 months (without subscription renewal)? LU I have now been using this program for many years and I have to say, it is pretty good. Very high quality videos and great support.

Because the video broadcasters are continually changing their encryption methods, I would assume it is very difficult to stay on top of all the different signals. However, there are usually about 2 minor updates per month and they are usually a fix of some sort when things change from broadcasters.

#CFGuy, I think even if this software is workable after 12 months, it would not be able to record many stations because they are always changing.

The software developer has been very responsive on the forum as well as emails when I have needed my license renewed.

What is recorded frequently are stations like: ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CW, AMC, etc.
What can't be recorded are the online only like Netflix and Hulu due to their encryption.

Louis H Had tried this a number of years ago, got frustrated trying to adjust it to work correctly. (My issue, not the software's.) Recently tried the demo and have been successful getting a number of different sites to work correctly, without any major effort to adjust any settings. (Hopefully I'm a little bit smarter than I was back then.) I am impressed with the changes in how this program has evolved. Definitely worth the investment.

Thanks to BDJ and Chris for offering this one again. Not missing it this time around. :)

Dylan I have used the free version of this program for a number of years and it works very well. The company does an excellent job staying on top of the changes made by various websites.
The pro version allows more than a limited number of downloads at one time. It might become expensive to purchase this on an annual basis. I would consider this if the lifetime version were offered at a 50% discount.
Bits had a promotion on a program called Allavsoft which is very similar. It was less than $18 for a 2 computer lifetime license. It works equally well. It might be worth it to try the trial if available.

Louis H While such a discount would be nice, I don't think Chris would be able to constantly be updating the program due to the ever changing methods of encoding. I don't mind subscribing to sites that require me to do so to access things I can't access over the air, but I see no reason why I can't watch programs that would be picked up by an antenna if I lived a little closer to the broadcasting stations.

I don't mind paying Chris, either once for a lifetime, or yearly for a subscription. I'm sure he has to pay bills and eat like everyone else. When it comes time to renew this 12 month subscription, I plan on getting the lifetime one. It's cheaper, and less of an eye sore, than the type of antenna I would need to buy and install to MAYBE pick up the nearest ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CW, over the air stations. (Others as well) And there is no guarantee that the quality of them would be any good. With a basic antenna I can pick up PBS and ABC, but that's it. And if it storms, not even them.

So to me, this subscription approach is not so much for the software itself, but the constant work it takes to keep the program updated.

Another main feature that really sells it for me is the ability to download and view HQ instructional videos I am already paying for, but unable to access the HD stream. Where I live, the broadband speeds never get above 1.5 Mbps. Many sites do offer a lower quality stream, for folks like me, but what good does that do when you can't read the print on the screen. I have had to wait until the HD video FULLY loads, not simply buffering a few minutes, before playing, then record the screen as it plays in it's entirety. With this program I can download while I am doing something else and then watch it at my leisure.

Satellite TV is the ONLY other option where I live. So it's either pay close to 100$ a month for it, or subscribe to a streaming service online and watch over-the-air programs in sometimes fair to more often low quality. Of all the streaming TV services, YouTube TV does the best here, providing local stations, but that is 50$ a month. So at 50$ a year, the service this program provides is a great value, for me at least.

CFGuy Thanks to all for comments. I had just assumed this video downloader was for downloading "un-encrtpted" videos (which it kind of sounds like it is, if it unable to allow download from "Netflix", "HBO Now" subscription-type websites). I have used a program called "Internet Download Manager" (IDM) for many years now, which also offers to allow user to download video (at several different quality setting choices) when a video appears on the screen, using a "download video" link box. It does allow concurrent downloads of more than 1 video at a time. I am wondering what this program would offer (in features) compared to IDM. IDM is also "lifetime free upgrades". If anyone (especially "ChrisPC" rep) would let me know advantages to this program over IDM, I might be persuaded to purchase this program, if I feel it offers more in features/usability. Gary Mugford #CFGUY I started with this program on a single year basis and was dismayed that it eventually became not usable after I let the licence lapse. I tried other ones. I came back and bought a lifetime licence. Is it perfect? No. I used it a lot during the Winter Olympics last year to taste other Korean TV (english sub-titles) and it did MOST of what I wanted. It didn't always find the video I could see playing, mostly because of the preponderance of other videos on those same pages. But I'd say it captured waaay more than I would have figured. In the end, three of those Korean programs made my top 35 list of TV programs for the year. Wouldn't have been possible without ChrisVTDLrPro. I also look through my channels on YouTube every Sunday morning, copying each link as I see something interesting. They automatically post to my active ChrisVTDLr window. Easy peasy. Then I hit the download button for all of them and go have brunch/lunch. I then can watch at my leisure. Honestly, pro-rating the lifetime licence over the months I've had it, comes out to about a buck a week. And that cost is dropping the longer it goes. Worth the price,
