What are people saying about Clarify

Brad Hello,

This is a very nice product, I have previously trialed you product, and it is very fast at developing quick screen shot tutorials and instructions. This said I am a season user of SnagIt and I have found in my case I can do most of the very same things quickly and efficiently in SnagIt, but this may be experience driven also.

However despite the great gesture in offering the product at 50% discount in this offer, the policy of "upgrades requiring additional payment which will not be discounted." is a problem for me.

I do not mind paying for upgrades towards major releases, no issues there! I realize software development is costly, and often times an arduous business, yet by the same token a great deal of goodwill is generated for loyal repeat users when upgrades are offered in my opinion at a minimum discount of 25% off full price.

My reasoning is if the software tool or service is truly useful to me I'm going to passively market this to family, friends and coworkers. For this "word of mouth" marketing my idea is any lost revenue by offering a goodwill discount to loyal repeat customers is quickly offset via new business generated.

I will state though this is a very subjective view and probably impossible to verify. So I fully accept my belief system on this issue may itself be flawed in it's assumptions.

You are obviously smart folks, and see this differently.

Still despite the products obvious ease of use, for my part I have chosen not to purchase due to no discount being offered on future major upgrades.

Regards, Brad

Tazzie Well stated, Brad! I take the same point of view ... not only would I be a repeat customer, but the revenue generated by my "marketing" of a software program should more than offset the cost of a discount on the upgrade price.

I buy all my software if it isn't freeware or open-source, and that can add up to a hefty total at the end of a year. If I had to pay full price for all software upgrades, I would simply have to either cut back on my software purchases or forego doing more than a few upgrades, which I would not appreciate doing.

Therefore, unless the software program is one that I absolutely need or for which there is little to no competition, I just don't buy software that does not come with discounted upgrades.

Although I do like to buy a lot of the good quality software offered on BDJ, if necessary, I can usually find similar competitive software that offers discounted upgrades or that is freeware/open-source. In the case of Clarify, which seems like a good program, there enough competitive software in all categories to provide me with sufficient and satisfactory alternatives.

I appreciate the discount, but what really matters is what I am going to have to pay down the road for upgrades ... I just can't afford to ignore the long picture.

Ralph Bressler I read the policy careful and it states:

Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for minor versions only, for versions after that upgrades will require additional payment which will be discounted.

Did his change recently? If so, a thumbs up goes to the vendor. If not, a thumbs down to the reviewers above.

Greg DeVore Ralph -

I am one of the developers. Brad and Tazzie were right. That is how it was set in the policy settings but it shouldn't have been that way. Our mistake. Clarify is a new product for us but with our other products we have always offered free upgrades for minor versions and discounted upgrades for major versions.

Brad and Tazzie - Thanks for pointing this out.

Brad - regarding SnagIt. SnagIt is a great app for working with individual screenshots. Clarify is somewhat unique in that it combines screen capture, image editing AND text authoring. Some people may be fine pasting images from their screen capture application into Word documents or uploading them one at a time, but most users we talk to find this to be a major pain point which Clarify solves.

The real benefit of Clarify is not that it lets you do anything you couldn't do before (you could create the same types of documents using several applications together) but that it makes it so easy to create screen capture based communications that people do it more often. Now, instead of just creating a step by step guide when it REALLY matters they can do it whenever even a small need arises. This helps them communicate more clearly, more quickly and ultimately saves them hours of lost productivity because of misunderstandings due to ambiguous, text-based communications.

We're not really trying to replace other screen capture applications. We are trying to replace the 10% of emails you send that should have pictures in them but don't. That is where we want to make an impact on your life.

Thanks again for the comments and please let us know if you have any other questions.

Regards,

Greg DeVore

Ralph Bressler Greg,

Thanks for the "Clarify-cation"! I didn't realize that this was from Blue Mango. I have used Screen Steps for some time and find it invaluable. I can't wait for Version 3! I was going to ask about the differences between the two programs but found a clear explanation on your website. I will probably buy Clarify for the reasons you gave on the site. Keep up the good work!

Greg DeVore Ralph -

Thanks so much. Glad you are a happy ScreenSteps user! We definitely try to focus more on workflows than features. I think that you will find that adding Clarify to your communications tool belt will help you in a lot of areas where ScreenSteps might seem a bit "heavy".

Greg DeVore Ralph-

It is probably a cookie/caching issue in your browser. We are seeing a lot of other orders go through without an problem. Try clearing your cache or using a different browser. If that doesn't work then let us know and we can investigate further.

Kevin P Nicely done!

I've used a lot of capture/annotation tools and this is the best I've seen. I only had to use the Mac version trial for about 5 minutes before making a decision to purchase. Very intuitive, great looking output, and just the right balance of features combined with ease of use.

Kevin P I'm having same problem as Ralph B. NO DISCOUNT. Only full price is shown when "Buy Now" button is clicked.

I would buy from Mac App Store, where it is discounted, but when I try to buy it there, I'm told that the App Store version is older than the trial version I have already downloaded. FRUSTRATING!!

So much for my previous, glowing review.

I'm having no trouble at all accessing the discount. Like Greg mentioned, have you tried clearing your browser cache or trying a different browser entirely?

Apologies, we can't seem to replicate your situation.

Kevin P @Roger T.

I was using Chrome on OSX, but when I switched to Safari, I was able to get the discount. Thanks.

Only other complaint is that I had to type in the license key manually, because the paste option for fields on the registration dialogue seem to be disabled. That was a little annoying.

Anyway, it's finally installed and registered. Thanks for your quick replies.

Bob User I've read that Clarify is new but hate to say I didn't know it or ScreenSteps existed.
I am trialing both but would like to read the comparison of the two on your web site mentioned by Ralph above. For some reason I haven't been able to find it.

I have noticed ScreenSteps allows me to capture an entire window by just double-clicking on it while Clarify doesn't seem to. Many times I capture entire windows, and they can be in slightly different locations on the screen. So it seems ScreenStep may suit my needs better.

Any idea if/when ScreenSteps will be offered again on BDJ?

Clarify can capture entire windows as well. Just press the spacebar while you are in capture mode and the capture will toggle between region and window capture mode.

Here are the differences between ScreenSteps and Clarfy:

Kevin P @Bob

Screen Steps is more suited to producing documentation, where Clarify is more for "one-off" annotated screen shots. Screen steps also offers more output formats than Clarify's PDF, JPG, and PNG. Clarify can also do entire window captures. When you initiate a capture, pressing the space bar will toggle between capture window and capture user-defined region.

bvssunnydale Hi, since I have a program called StepShot (also from bitsdujour) I was just wondering if you might provide what advantages this Clarify provides over StepShot. I'm also looking for a good documentation producing/creation app and would certainly consider adding this to my collection. Thanks very much.

I have never used StepShot but a quick look at the website looks like it is a similar program. If you are already familiar with StepShot then I would suggest that you download the free trial of Clarify and see if it would be worth adding to your tool belt.

You can download the free trial here:

HJ B 1. Windows includes a "print screen" facility. Is it claimed that Clarify produces a better image or provides more flexibility in capturing the image than does "print screen"?

2. Once the screen image is captured it can be edited with a wide variety of graphics editors, some expensive, some free. Is it claimed that the Clarify editor is superior to standard editing programs for that purpose?

3. Sometimes, the area one wishes to capture extends outside the visible screen area. Using the demo of this program, it appears that one cannot extend the capture by scrolling . Is that correct? If so, is there a workaround?

I do see the value of bring the screen capture and image annotations features into one application. I am attempting to figure out whether this program has some feature that is not generally available using the print screen and free edit programs.

Greg DeVore @HB

If all you need to do is capture pictures then print screen will work fine. If all you Ned to do is edit some images then tere is probably a better tool than Clarify for that. The benefit of Clarify is that it combines image capture, image editing and text editing into a very fluent workflow that helps you create clear communications very, very fast, not just take or edit pictures.

Re: capturing images off screen- Clarify can currently only capture images you can see on your screen. Not images outside the viewable area.

After I posted I noticed ScreenSteps was already offered earlier in the month. Missed it.

@Greg & @ Kevin
Thanks for your responses. Hadn't noticed the spacebar to capture the entire window feature. Works great.

For my basic uses Clarify will do what I'm looking for and will be buying a copy.
One last question. Do I need to purchase 1 or 2 licenses to be able to use it on either of my person machines? It would only be used one at a time.

Some User This is indeed a very nice app. I bought it from the App Store yesterday, but it would have been better to buy it from here since the App Store version is one update behind.

(You are getting 1.0.1 on the App Store and 1.0.2 when buying here.)

I am sure the App Store version will be updated soon, however.
