What are people saying about Clipstory

B Barnabe It would be nice to know beforehand that this program requires Microsoft .Net 2.0 Framework to be installed - not all programs have that as a prerequisite.

Also, if I am reading the license agreement correctly - this program can only be installed on a desktop computer and a laptop of the buyer (with one license purchase)? Even at this greatly discounted price, I definitely prefer the "personal license" that allows installation on multiple computers of the buyer, IMHO.
Dec 6 2009 at 6:01am Copy Link

Nico Westerdale Yes Clipstory does require .NET 2.0 Framework, which should be already present on computers purchased in the last couple of years.

Our license for ClipStory is the same terms as for all our Iconico products, which is one computer, plus one portable computer. It's realivly common in the industry.

Steve M. Can I edit clipped entries (at least text)?

Can I rearrange clipped items in the list?

Do I have the option of copying formatted or unformatted text (or pasting formatted text as unformatted)?

If I copy a file in Windows Explorer, does this allow me to paste either the file or the contents of the file into something else?

Thanks,
Steve

Ash Goyal Installed trial copy but had many issues on My Vista 64 Home Premium laptop:

1. It conflicts with Simidude clip manager I use for Network clipboard sync. Clipstory thus shows anything clipped TWICE, one on copying and second from Simidude.

2. No easy way for me to save any files. Couldnt find how to extract a file I see in my clipstory.

3. Clipstory crashed after I defined a File listener.

Constantin Florea The 1.3 version of Clipstory has been released. This version contains new and improved features based on the comments obtained during the December 13 2009 promotion:

1. The Open File Dialog was now replaced with the Saved File Dialog (where it was necessary)

2. Saving invidual clips is now possible both from the Clipboard History and Clipboard Current State sections.
You can now save:
- an image as BMP, JPG, PNG or TIFF
- audio content as WAV file
- text content to file
- html content to file
- file drop content as text to file
- any content type (image, audio, text/html, file drop, binary) in a Clipstory format file: *.cls

Markus J I bought clipstory last time it was on sale. It worked ok in XP, but in WIN 7 pro 64bit I had some problems. The program doeseb't save settings. (At least all of them.) In win7 I have used a freeware tool instead...

Nico Westerdale Sorry you're having problems Markus - have you tried a restart and reinstall?
BitsDuJour Admin - May 13 2010 at 6:22am Copy Link

Markus J Yes I have. Several times I think. I have also tried manually editing the settings file. No luck there either. The setting is saved to the settings file but the application doesn't obey the setting "CLIPBOARD_HISTORY_SELECTION_WITH_ADD=True". In Clipstory homepage it says that Clipstory runs on Windows XP and Vista so I really can't complain if I can't get it to work on win 7.

A. Goyal Installed trial version fine on Win 7 64 bit. I tried clipping a 4 line text and only first 77 char were saved each time. Is that a default setting or a flaw?
May 13 2010 at 2:18pm Copy Link

Constantin Florea Hi, Indeed this is a trial limitation in Clipstory: only the first 77 characters are stored. Please notice below the trial limitations for all clip types:     - the Text clips are trimmed to 77 characters     - the Image clips are ignored if they are over 4 Megabytes     - the Audio clips are ignored if they are over 40 Megabytes     - the File clips have no limitation     - the Binary clips are ignored if they are over 4 Megabytes The registered application does not have any limitation. Thanks!

Mr. Yoop Clipstory is one of these utilities that are irreplaceable once you have installed them. The only thing that should be improved is the UI that reminds me of some ancient Windows XP designs. Is there any possibility to change the icon or at least the background color? For a future version, a ribbon based interface would be great as this would support the usage lot. Are there any plans for a Clipstory 2010 with an improved user interface? With an up-to-date interface, Clipstory is clearly a "must have" utility... Mr. Yoop.

bvssunnydale Personally, I think the 'Lifetime free updates' is a terrible business model and limits how often you can upgrade the program; I've been doing computers since the old CP/M machines and every company with 'lifetime' programs go out of business eventually (some quicker than others), it's just not viable. I've had many programs I've grown to love just disappear because most software revenue is generated from upgraders (heard of Microsoft?) and I've gotten so I don't purchase software that doesn't charge for upgrades (and, no, I'm not one of those imbecilic Republicans, this is just common sense..)

Tortuga Hello
Went to the site, this looks quite interesting & could become very useful for daily monotonous tasks!!
The promo today is for v1.5, yes?

On the front page it says it supports up to Vista?
Though, the dwld page says it supports Windows7 ...

What abt x64, is there support or compatibility?
Can you confirm? Would very much appreciate any additional information.

Ah, ok, finally (!) managed to find the changelog! Seems this app. was last updated September.2010, right?

Many thanks

Matt Hi Constantin,

Thank you for the free Clipstory.

I've noticed some display issues within Win7 (64-bit).
- ToolTips don't display.
-The text under the six upper-right buttons is truncated. The buttons read: 'ToolTi Setting Licens Forum Suppor Quit'.
- License button still remains after registering Clipstory.

There may be other issues that I haven't come across as I've only used it for a few minutes.

Many thanks.

Constantin Florea @J Bell Tooltips can be switched on/off using the big yellow bulb button. If it has a red X over it then tooltips won't be displayed, otherwise, they should be displayed.

The License button is always there because it gives the possibility to test different licenses.

Regarding the truncated text: 'ToolTi Setting Licens Forum Suppor Quit'. I believe this is because you are either using a certain theme or have modified the font size in Windows 7. As it is currently implemented Clipstory may display truncated texts like the ones you mention when the font size changes (above 100%) or when used with certain themes.

Matt Hi Constantin,

Thank you for your reply, but it wasn't a solution.

The 'ToolTi (text-truncated) button DOES toggle, but the tool tips NEVER display.

Also, I'm using the Windows 7 'Basic' theme with 'stock' font, so it's not a theme/font issue.

Iconico, Inc. also has a 'display' problem with their "Line Reader" software (also here on BDJ) on a Win7-64 PC.

It must be a software incompatibility issue with Windows 7 (64-bit). I installed both demos on a Vista-32 machine and both titles display and function properly.

Thanks again.

internet explorer Thank you. Installed Clipstory over prior installation with no problem. Running 64-bit Win7 and am not getting any of the truncation or other issues noted by other user(s) above. Not only that but I am doing it on two separate computers if that helps any. I personally suspect J.Bell's problem may be coming from some other software (like Magnifier?), perhaps even since uninstalled, or else possibly from the Microsoft Accessibility settings or maybe even something like video card or screen resolution settings. Anyway, I hope it all works out somehow. Thanks again.

Matt Hi internet explorer.

Thank you for letting me know that your Win7 (64-bit) PCs are running Clipstory without any problems and thanks for your suggestions!

Then it must be my PC setup for sure. I'm not using Magnifier or the Accessibility features, but it could very well be my video setup.

For some time, without problems, I've been running three monitors using TripleHead2Go along with a high-end Nvidia video card. Clipstory and Line Reader are the only two software titles that I've ever had any display issues with. I'll do some tweaking in the Nvidia control panel.

Another thing I haven't figured out... the usefulness of keeping track of the clipboard history for anything other than 'text'. I haven't thought of a need to keep a history of copied files (although I'm probably overlooking something very obvious). I've been using AceText from JG Soft for years. It's a 'text only' clipboard app for collections and snippets.

Maybe someone could offer some examples where keeping a history of copied files would be handy?

Many thanks again!

Justin Cram Hello

I'm thinking of migrating to windows 8 PRO how well will this work with W8PRO? Also will be coming from the portableapps.org copy and paste program "Ditto", I've not come across a clipboard history equal to this clipboard i've got it's total history set to 55000 clips I've been using over 6-8 years now and barely just getting to 10k clips great build in features like remove Duplication's etc... also you can have it drop into category's when i copy an Image of any sort it will automatically store in the photos group convenient! Question is I'd like to see this streamlined with our mobile phones. would be really simple to have MD5 check-sum or sequence verifies file date MD5 etc then dumped to Dropbox. then a mobile app that will sync to it! or something as simple as that! On mobile app i currently use Clipper+ and Clip Ninja. which would be nice if this synced to those even! Clipper+ uses Json2 and the other you just can't export! Any of would be grateful thanks in advanced! Hi5

Tim Parsons @Larry, my favourite is missing from the list -- Clipboard Help And Spell, to be found at www.donationcoder.com -- but it seems that Clipstory can also handle files of various (maybe all?) types, and that is unusual and potentially valuable. It's a shame that the developer hasn't responded to any of the comments and queries so far, and I'm slightly concerned that the website mentions XP and Vista but not Win 7 or 8, but I guess if it's free, there's always the option to uninstall it again, if it can't manage to slot into your workflow :)

Constantin Florea @Tim Parsons - Clipstory can also store Clipboard file/folder clips. Besides this, Clipstory allows you to create "listeners" which based on the Clipboard content are able to store that content in a file (or separate files) or copy the referred content to a folder (in case of file/folder clips).

The application works with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 but we haven't had the chance of testing it on Windows 8 just yet.

Watcher1924 Hi. I want to express my usual concern:
can this program clip/paste parts and pictures of the most web pages effectively (without any/much distortion in font type, font size, font style, text colour and text background colour etc)? What about from text editors? Does it matter if the source program (web browser, text editor, note editor, pdf viewer, anything with text) is portable?
Also, do we have to install the program during the promotion period?

J S #Tim Parsons: DonationCoder isn't strictly speaking free to use. Users of DC programs are very much encouraged to make a donation for the use of a program(s) but in return they have some pretty 'smick' programs such as "Screenshot Captor".

So because DC software isn't technically freeware, that is very likely to be the reason that You don't see the DC program - You mentioned, on the web-page that #Larry Miller has provided a link for.

As You have mentioned DonationCoder, "if" my memory on DC is correct, a non-Member of DC is given a 3 or 6 month License Key for a program they're interested in, which must be renewed at no cost, OR, if the user is willing to Make a donation of essentially any amount monetary to the software writer or to the running expenses of the DC website, then they will be issued with a License that doesn't expire for that program as well as become a member of DC. If you look carefully on the DC website - unless I'm mistaken, I think you'll also find a link allowing you to make a donation which will entitle You to receive an "all programs non-expiring license".

Cheers, J S

Pim Joosten What is the current licensing policy? In the older discussions it was stated somewhere that the license allows for an installation on a computer and a laptop, but under Fine print I now read that the license is per computer. Has the licensing policy changed? If the policy has changed, is it possible to obtain 2 free licenses with this deal?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Constantin Florea @Pim Joosten - The license policy hasn't changed. We have just updated the license policy with the following phrase, to make it more clear:

Clipstory ($0)

Should be FREE.

The other two products we are cross-selling: ColorPro and Line Reader were labeled at 50% ever since we set up the promotion. During giveaways we usually do up-sell or cross-sell other products for a price.

Are you saying that the Clipstory promotion is not labeled at $0.00? If so, please send us a snapshot at notify@bitsdujour.com where we could see this issue happening.

JWS I had installed Clipstory 1.5 on June 1, 2012. I used the key sent to me today to register. When clicking on "License" at the top of the page (with the "set of keys" icon, it opens a box that states "CLIPSTORY IS LICENSED". However, when I click on the "Check License" button, it returns "License is not valid!".

Is this a quirk? Is my software licensed?

4.2.15 @ 226a EDST
Apr 1 2015 at 11:28pm Copy Link

Constantin Florea @JWS, If you see the message:
CLIPSTORY IS LICENSED
then your copy of the program is licensed. You cannot remove the existing "Licensed" state easily, not even by entering and applying/checking any other license which is invalid.

Since you do get the "License is not valid!" message, it means you did not enter the code correctly but like I wrote above, this did not modify the "Licensed" status of the program.

Constantin Florea @geo User, The license is Per Computer and in the Fine Print it is written:

John User Well, I should have tried this one before buying it....

It looked like a good program I needed so I bought 2 licenses (sent only one by the way!) for my two desktops.

For the past 1+ hours I have been trying to install it without success.

I've tried many times unsuccessfully to install Windows .NET Framework 3.5 which the program needs. I tried to skip it, but no dice.

First attempt took about 5 minutes before finally getting error code 0x800F0922.

Was advised to reboot and try again. Done. Same result.

Next was advised to try to install via Windows Control panel. Tried this. After more time passed, I got the same error code and was sent down the Windows update troubleshooting rabbit hole.

I fixed something, rebooted again and tried to install Framework again. Same result.

I am putting this here in case someone else has this installation problem and to see if the developer will get involved. After awhile, I contact their technical support.

geo User I installed the trial version to test it.
I am very interested in using the save to file function.
Upon testing after setting a listener for text I see in my test file all text shown in duplicate. For example a text copy of say 'weather' shows up twice, in two separate lines. My listener is set to store items in separate lines. Am I doing something wrong to cause this?

Also, a PC with dual boot does it require 2 licenses?
What about a laptop with 2 VMs?

Thanks.

John User So last time this was offered in Sept. '17 instead of trying it first, I purchased two licenses for my 4 computers. Unfortunately, I had all sorts of problems getting it installed and working. Customer support got involved, but I just couldn't get it to install on my desktop and laptop (the other 2 computers were in another location). I gave up and BDG support/Constantin was nice enough to give me a full refund for my purchase. This is one of the reasons I enjoy testing and often purchasing software offered on BDJ.

This time I downloaded the trial version on the computer in another location and it works perfectly. This is just what I was hoping for and IMO this is worth every penny I paid for the license.

Thank you Clipstory and BDJ!

Can your program be instructed to only keep text(and rich text) history ?
(That way I don't have to wake up ion the middle of the night worrying how big the history file is)

Thanks,

May 16 2018 at 2:23am Copy Link

Constantin Florea @Robert Crombie, Clipstory has two tabs at the top: "Clipboard State and History" and "Define Filters".

In the "Clipboard State and History" tab, the actual application functionality of storing and handling the clipboard snippets (text, images) is found however In the "Define Filters" tab you can create a TEXT filter which will always store only text snippets.

Constantin Florea @RichU, There is no Android app. Also, there is no automatic syncing process but you can move the Clipboard history on any other computer by copying the contents of the following folder:
C:\Users\[YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Iconico\ClipboardParserUtility
to the same path on the other computer. The destination computer may have a different username in which case you replace that username (from the destination computer) in the above path and copy all files/folders in there.

Vincent Whitfield WordPerfect has a feature that allows me to copy text from multiple sources to the clipboard and then paste everything in the clipboard into a document. Does Clipstory have a similar feature?
Oct 21 2021 at 9:22am Copy Link
1
Constantin Florea @Vincent Whitfield, Not exactly a document but with Clipstory you can do the following:
1. As you copy text snippets (as many as you want) from anywhere on your computer, they are added to Clipstory. Then you can select those text snippets you want (either all of them or specific ones) and select Join Selected Text Clips which will create a new clip which will be added at the top of the list. Further you can either select it and then right click it and select "Add To Clipboard State" or after you have selected it, you can copy its entire content from the right side and press CTRL + C to add it to the Clipboard. So this would accomplish the behavior you mentioned except this does not work with images, it works only with text.
2. Clipstory does allow having multiple different items in the Clipboard by selecting an item from its history, and right clicking it and choosing "Append To Clipboard State". However if you append a text to Clipboard this way and there is already a text added in there then that text will be replaced with the new one, the same happens for any other clip (for example an image).

HJ B I installed the program. I then went to an well known newspaper that is published on the internet. I made a series of clippings from the front page.

I then opened the stored clippings window of this application. It showed the items I had clipped.

The windows permits me to export the clippings to a file. The only choice was to save it as CDT file. I saved it.

I then opened the saved file using a text editor and using MS Word. In both instances, the text was unclean, that is, it was strewn with control characters.

Is there a way to use this program and save clipings to Word or to a text editor? Is there a way to retain the formatting of the original document. If use the ordinary windows clip function, I can paste the clipping into MS Word and it ends up looking just like the webpage text that I clipped it from.

This is useful to me with the control characters.
