Stephane M I sent an email to the sale department about the x64 support and they replied that CDS is running on 32-bit platform but the searchbox feature is not available.
They also said that to make CDS work with Outlook, the 32-bit version of Outlook must be installed otherwise CDS cannot find it.

Stephane M Still from the reply I got from the sale department yesterday, CDS license is per computer, you will need one license for each computer you want to install it on.

This morning I received another answer and they said that they do not have a date for the implementation of the searchbox feature on 64-bit platform.

I hope someone from Copernic will show up here to confirm all of that.

Brad Hi,

I tried Copernic on my 64-bit Win 7, unfortunately it locks my Outlook 2010 .pst file, which prevents Outlook from opening. This does not occur everytime but it happens enough to be annoying. Once I shut down Copernic Search, Outlook opens without issue. Copernic seems functional on 64-bit Win 7(have not test thoughly), so it seems their counsel that it works only for 32-bit Win 7 seems quite accurate. Nice program, very simple, intuitive, and clean interface. However for a very powerful Windows search application consider X1 Professional, $50 (I've used it for two years) lightening fast indexing, simple to use. Although Copernic's search interface seems more user friendly, once you get the hang of searching with X1, it really is light years more sophisicated and powerful than Copernic search, it's also programmed for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. Cheers, Brad

David Gilmour I picked up CDS Professional the last time that it was featured on BDJ, and I am very satisfied with its functionality and performance. I am running on Win 7 64-bit.

On the minus side, CDS's deskbar search bar feature still does not work on the 64bit OS, which is an annoyance, and I have a sizeable wishlist of functional improvements that I would like to see. The company's absence from these discussions on BDJ and its weak presence in its own forums is troubling.

Still, I prefer the higher level of indexing control that CDS Pro gives me over Windows Search, and CDS Pro spares me the various reliability problems that I used to have with GDS. The bottom line that CDS Pro's fast comprehensive and realiable search capabilities have become an indispensable part of my regular work routines.

David Gilmour @Bob Waits, I'm having trouble finding a good recent comparative review of CDS and GDS. The best that I found was this discussion on desktop search engines from 2008. It has some good info in it, especially if you read through the comments: http://lifehacker.com/400...s#comments Personally, I find CDS to be less of a drain on my system resources than GDS was when I used it. My current CDS index has 855,000 indexed documents, many of those being image files from my photography archives, and 10.7 million keywords.

Frank Stephens I don't understand why people who have Vista or higher would want a third-party desktop search, other than the fact that Microsoft made Windows Search needlessly complex and very poorly documented. There are four things which must be set properly for Windows Search to work correctly: the search options, the search locations, the file types, and the per-file index attributes. Type "index" into the Control Panel search box, Indexing Options and Folder Options should be listed. Under Indexing Options there's Modify where you should select Show All Locations and fully expand the drive/folder tree to see what's selected. Advanced lets you select which file types are indexed and how they're handled, among other things, although most people won't need to change the file types. Under Folder Options, Search you can set important options, I strongly prefer to have partial matches and natural language search enabled. The implications and powerful (but buggy) search syntax are far beyond the scope of this paragraph, research advanced search syntax and play with it; natural language search removes much of the otherwise required syntax, capitalization, and keyword restrictions, lets you use grouping and boolean selections pretty much as expected, etc. Next, the Indexing attribute must be set per-file. Normally, this isn't a problem, but ever since Microsoft introduced Protected Mode in Internet Explorer, for some reason the bozos at Microsoft are leaving the Indexing attribute de-selected for stuff saved by Internet Explorer. I save lots of MHTML files which I want indexed. While one can use the standard Windows multi-file select, right-click, select Properties, Advanced and set the indexing attribute there, I find it's much easier to use the Command Prompt (under Accessories in the programs list) and the Attrib command. Naturally, Microsoft reversed the logic of the Indexing attribute, so it's backwards. When using the Attrib command, you have to use -I instead of the expected +I to set content indexing on the selected files. You navigate in the command interface by selecting a drive, if required (e.g., C: enter), selecting directories with cd (change directory). Tab (and backtab) functions as autocomplete for paths/files/folders, cycling through leading matches. Dir is directory, Attrib is attributes. The parameter /? gives help on each command. For some commands, you can use Help commandname. I usually navigate to my Documents folder and run Attrib -I *.* occasionally. Of course, you can use a command file, and you may want different options, see Attrib /? for what's available.

S B In the past Copernic has quietly collected and shared private data--it's an important part of their business model.

Their privacy policy ("Copernic Inc. may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, so please review it periodically") is not reassuring--very carefully written, lots of seeming details, but few assurances.

How is the data for "contextual advertisements" kept and shared? What information is given to Copernic's "Partners"? How is the user-identifiable data they collect kept secret and secure before the "nightly process consolidates" it? Do they recognize that search terms should be kept private?

I'm concerned because this app would have all my information and what I do.

Will Copernic even respond?

This is all too strange. I recommend a pass on this one.

Techtoysavvy Now for the impolite post. Please feel free to rectify and delete.
BDJ is the price leader for 24 hours. This makes the purchase compelling. I buy software here for anticipated future use. About half the time I never install the software. OKay so I am behind on my to do list :) and a sucker for this site. All the better for you. I am looking for an excuse to buy something.

I am making this post longer so BDJ will be more likely to read it but most people will get bored and move on.

This software is available everyday from tigerdirect for $24 download. BDJ may or may not have items in their contract with Copernic which mandate a low price. I don't care about the $1. The other deal is reported on other deal sites and this is your business.

At least package this in a way to make it more compelling. For example raise the price and bundle it with Agent. It's your business. I think you get my point.

DrTeeth I would much rather give BdJ my business any day. This site is not about one deal but HUNDREDS. You have to take an overview.

If this site goes, we will lose all these good deals. You admit you buy yourself for a rainy day as do I...I cannot pass up a good deal. Also, having had numerous pleasurable contacts with Roger and Nico I am even more inclined to spend here.

They cannot be expected to know of every deal out there or even how each software vendor manages their business.

This software is *almost* too expensive with this deal. Google desktop is no longer being developed and I have fond memories of how good CDS is, especially before they crippled the free version some time ago. Nothing else comes close IMHO.

SoftCollector I have always been wary of installing software that would dig deep and at a certain point 'know' almost all there is to know about my files. How is this information used? Potentially, it is like letting a trojan horse in your computer and provide it with full access 24/7.

There have been some concerns about privacy with Copernic (please, see the comments from the previous BDJ sale). I hope someone on the developer's side can come forward and reassure us that the information collected shall not be used inappropriately (that is, sent back to the producer or provided to advertisers, etc. with or without consideration).

ALSO: The version downloaded from BDJ is not the latest one. Does this mean that the version commercially sold at the sale price is not the current one?

Currently, the web search is also activated in the trial for the Professional version. However, at the installation, the user can check NOT to send the keywords back to us. Also, once the license is fully registered, the keyword tracking disappear and everything is fully private.

@ DrTeeth

You seem to be missing the point - how is a firewall supposed to help in this case? By blocking internet access for an application you are also blocking updates, internet searches (if any), etc. And even with a firewall if an application says that is will be checking for updates and goes ahead and transmits data how is the firewall going to help?

This is not a question of having or not having a firewall, but rather of what the application has been engineered to collect and transmit (if it indeed does) back to its creators.

Kind Regards,
SC

Copernic @ Jean Sibe

The Search speed is a lot faster than the engine inside Outlook.

Also, when your mailbox is very big and has a lot of emails, the outlook search engine seems to very slow, CDS will not be impacted by the number of emails.

Finally, with Outlook you can only search inside one specific folder at a time. With CDS, it will find every email that has the keyword even if it's in your public folders or archive.

Copernic @ SoftCollector Sometimes, if specific connector used by MS Word, we will be able to index and search double-byte characters. However, outlook does not over such functionnality and it cannot be index for double-byte characters.

Frank Stephens Copernic was good in its day, but I can't imagine anyone using any indexed search on XP and above other than Windows Search. The only downsides to Windows Search is that it's a pain to configure pre-Win7, it's so powerful that you have to learn how to use it, and IE on Vista+ doesn't set the indexing attribute on most saved files, so you have to do that yourself, either via Explorer (group file Properties) or via the command interface, using the Attrib command (backwards flag for the indexing attribute). I always recommend natural language queries with partial matching enabled. The search within WMP ignores those settings and requires the awful full syntax, but you can just search via Explorer.

Brad Do you offer an annual maintenance support program in lieu of full price upgrades. I currently use X1 Search and I am covered under their annual maintenance, it does help defray paying for full price upgrades, especially when you need to upgrade multiple machines.

I've downloaded the product and trialed the software it's very nice and responsive, yet the lack of discounted upgrades for future versions doesn't sit well with me, but that's just me no offense implied.

Also do you have 3 or 5 user licensing options with volume discounting to help offset the single license pricing scheme for future purchases, (not necessarily referencing this promotion) post BitsDuJour?

Thanks in advance for your answers, Brad

The volume discount start at 5 licenses. The price per license drops from 49.9 5USD to 44.95 USD.

H. H. Hallo´
trying copernic desktop search the follwoing questions occured until now:
1. is there a possibility to show folders in the result- pane too?
(x1 search has the possbility)
2, is there a possibility to index all file-types (by file-name),
so that one can find any file and folder one is looking for
(like in everything)
3. is there a possibility to sort the resultlist by size, filetype..,(x1
search, everything search-gt seem to have such features)?
Size and Filetype can be very importang criteria and just
using the file-type filter is not the same as sorting the results

In case these features are not implemented until now,
can they been exspected within the new future?
would this require an upgrade-price?

The wishlist for the development of a search utility would be:
a search-utility as fast and reliable as"everything" for all files
and folders, which are not content-indexed (working on fat32 and ntfs),
a search utility as versatile as x1-search regarding content-indexing, but more stable,
faster and allwoing to use explorer-context-rightclick-menu
and a notcie how many diskspace approxamately will be necessary for the file index

with kind regards
H.H.

PS:.

Some comments on pros and cons of some search-utilities
(very personal experience and needl, not represantative)

everything (freeware)
pos: very fast, reliable, various sorting-possibilities
cons: only ntfs (no fat32 volumes), no content-search

search-gt
pos. non-indexing, fast, various sorting features
cons: only working until xp sp3, no content search

folder-scout
pos: very handy for fast folder-search and access,
access to recent files and folders
cons: no file indexing until now, no content search

x1: pos: many features, sorting possibilites, good viewer
cons: worked quite slowly and not absolutely stable,
no possibility to start windows-explorer-context menu
directly (which can e.g. be useful, when you have
installed a file -comparison tool (beyond compare,..)
and directly want to compare the files
(this seems to be working in copernic desktop search)

K X I tried this and bought it the last time it was here on Bits. The initial drive indexing took a while, but they program has worked fine since then.

My feature request is for Copernic Desktop Search to recognize flv files, to include them in the list of videos.

If this is done, would thumbnailing also be possible?

For several years now, the bulk of videos on my computer are downloads from YouTube and other sites which use flv format.

Michael K @ Vincent - Copernic

The Copernic trial has tested my patience within the first 3 minutes of trying it and before giving up I thought I ask for some clarification as to what I might be doing wrong.

For some reason my outlook search has stopped working properly and so the ability search Outlook emails is why your program attracted my interest.

I keep my .PST file in a specific folder and when I started Copernic I note it won't search a .PST file unless it is open. So I opened it. However, when I click on the Email tab in Copernic it says "e-mail indexing is disabled". In attempting to resolve this I chose the option to "click here to modify indexing settings. Under that option it shows Outlook with a check mark against it so why would it say E-mail Indexing is disabled? Although it has a check mark against Outlook, it does not say anymore than that - shouldn't it which PST file is being indexed etc.

All in all I can't get it to index my outlook emails and as I say, this has taken me very quickly to a high state of frustration. Your help would be appreciated as to how I get it to enable what I would have thought to be a basic search function, that of e-mail indexing which is presently eluding me.

Thanks

1. No, the folders are shown at the top of each file but they are not shown by themselves.
2. To index all files, you need to add every specific file types you want to index. You can add them by going to Tools – Options – Advanced. In the advanced tab, at the top you can add/remove file types. Once you add one, it will index the file name only by default.
3. No, but it will be available in the next major version
Yes, they will be expected in the next majors releases. There will be an upgrade price for current CDS Professional license owners.
I’ve noted your feature request and forwarded them to the Product Manager.

For .pst files to be indexed, they need to be open in outlook. Otherwise, they won’t be indexed. As for your email indexing, could you try and close completely CDS. To do so, right-click on the CDS icon in the notification sections of the Windows Task Bar. In the right-click menu, select exit. Then, start CDS again.
If this does not solve it, try these steps. Open your Windows Task Manager and stop the two Copernic Desktop Search Services process. Then uninstall CDS by keeping your profile and reinstall after that.
After all these steps, could you let us know if in CDS you can open the Outlook Tree and see all your Outlook folders.

I followed your instructions throughout but things are unchanged including after the re-install.

1) The only this in the Outlook tree is as it was before - "Global Address List" There are no PST files shown.
2) It still says e-mail indexing is disabled although there is a check mark against Outook in the Emails & Organizer Indexing Settings dialog box.
3) Outlook was left open.

anything else we can do or do I give up?

Thanks

S B Desktop search can be useful. To determine my total costs ($ + responsibilities) and because of earlier comments from the vendor I have looked at the user agreement (it's below, but it may not be current). It has some sections that leave me with a few questions. (I'm personally not sure why these strange legally-binding sections even exist)

1) Do you expect that we will continue keep our registration information (address, etc.) current with Copernic as long as we have the software installed, and if not will we "not be able to access data"?

2) Why do you need access rights to our computers not already granted by law to "audit Licensee's use of the Software", and why should I grant you such rights at potentially enormous trouble and privacy risk to me and my clients?

3) I've take the time, but are you aware that busy BitsDuJour users may not be able to read the long legalize before legally committing?

From "Copernic Desktop Search Professional End user license agreement" (is it current?)
1.2 e.Registrations: ... You also agree to provide true, accurate and complete information about yourself ... and maintain and promptly update the Registration Information to keep it current and complete.

1.7 Right to Audit Supplier shall have the right, with reasonable notice to Licensee, to audit Licensee's use of the Software to assure compliance with the terms of this Agreement and any other agreements between the parties relating to the software. If an audit reveals the Licensee has underpaid fees to supplier, Licensee shall be invoiced for such underpaid fees based upon supplier's price list in effect at the time the audit is completed. Licensee shall pay supplier an additional fee of 25% of the applicable unpaid fee disclosed by the audit. If the underpaid fees exceed 5% of the license fees previously paid by licensee, then Licensee shall also pay supplier's reasonable cost of conducting the audit.

Michael K @ SB

Thank you very much for catching and pointing out such onerous terms.

I await the response with keen interest. In any event, right now this software is not indexing my outlook emails which would be key for me. In view of that and the onerous user agreement, it looks like I may have to Google alternatives but I'll hold off pending the vendors response on both issues.

Thanks

Ralph Bressler I started a trial of CDS two days ago. I am still getting "Initial scan in progress..." How long is initial? How long will this go on? Why is there no % or progress bar to give at least an estimate of the completion time?

Copernic @Ralph Bressler

It is really hard for us to know exactly the progression of the initial scan as CDS Professional needs to scan all your documents and files stored on your PC to create a map of your entire hard drive. It may take from a few minutes to several hours depending on the number of files and their size and types.

Ralph Bressler I agree with several other potential customers that an explanation of the User License is in order. I usually just glance at the agreement and ignore this kind of language. In this case, some of the statements seem too restrictive. I made a decision to buy CDS rather than X1 BEFORE I read the User License. I now regret my decision.

Copernic @ S B

1) No but if your information changes, it is better to let us know so we can keep our records up to date. Especially for licensing, if you request your serial number with a new email address, it is harder for us to find the information.
2) We have never audited or access any of our users information and it is not in our habits to do such. I’ve taken this to our legal department and the EULA should be updated in the nearest future. I’m deeply sorry for the misunderstanding it may have caused.
3) Yes, but it is the user responsibility to read the EULA before using/purchasing. I know it is a long process but the use of a software is regulated by EULAs. With every purchase, it is like entering into a contract between two parties. There are always regulations and conditions.
As for 1.7, as mentioned earlier, it is not in our habits to audit. Hence, we have never charged or applied any additional fees. The amount the licensee paid is the amount that is recognized as revenues and we cannot charge any additional fees afterwards. You do not have to worry; there will never be additional fees.
Thank you for bringing these points up! We always welcome user input especially on sensible issues like this one.

barney Barnes Well,

I cannot live with the vague aspect(s) of the usage policy, but the real deal breaker is something else entirely, having to do with the functionality.

I used Copernic many moons agone, and it was damned good, but my needs changed and I quit upgrading. But if I now have to specify every extension for the search, it is well-nigh useless. Part of the benefit of a true desktop search engine is that it will find files that you were not aware existed. Copernic seems to have lost that capability. Too bad.

Is there a listing of ALL file formats that Copernic does index?

Also, I guess if I search around on the site I might find an answer to this but I'll ask here: Can you take any action with a file that is listed in the search results? Or do you have to go to whatever external app handles the file?

Thank you.

U mean copernic will not fetch the bookmarks, history etc. from the portable browsers ones - Could not get what u said (default loc means only installed mainly i think).

Also can i add any more file type as .exe and more (any i want) and it will search that too. I have uninstalled that previous version so cant experiment.

Do u plan to make a portable copernic edition, wud be very fine ?

And one thing really important - can u specify the location of the configuration file - where file types (extensions like .png .rar ... ) are specified - which are indexed.
I wud like to delete all and add only some particular ones - but its really a long task to delete all individually in options, one by one.

Thanks.

"If you don't have enough space free in the Windows drive, that is a major problem."

In my case the primary drive is an SSD and space is at a premium. Depending on the size I may need to move it or I may want it there for performance reasons.

Bottom line: It would be important to me that the ability to locate the index files works.

bvssunnydale Hi, just wondering if Copernic Pro has the option of just searching for FILE NAMES ONLY (which are the vast majority of my searches)? Copernic has always been the best of the desktop search programs (tied with Google Desktop until GD was discontinued) but the ability to search network drives makes this an indispensable program for those on networks IMHO. Steve Amos A few years ago I tried Copernic, mostly to use with PDF files.

It did a very spiffy job indexing the regular PDF content, but peculiarly it DID NOT index PDF markup.

I often use markup text boxes to add arbitrary "tags" inside of PDF files, a very handy feature. Not being able to index my in-file tags, which other file searchers/indexers like dtSearch did without issue, stopped me from buying Copernic at that time.

Has this oversight been corrected in Copernic since then?

"We are currently working on pushing it. I'll post it here when the download links are updated!"

The day is passing quickly and I don't see how I can get a Windows 8 version for testing and test it unless it shows up pretty soon. Based on other comments it may takes days to index to testing isn't really realistic anyway. Thoughts?

Florian Rosenkranz Hi, I've tried several desktop search engines and this one is the best IMHO. Give it a try!

I bought the Pro version several month ago and I'm using it daily! It has never(!) let me down - unlike Windows Desktop Search where I cannot even find my Outlook Emails (don't know why). So I switched completely to CDS!

Paul Schlegel Does DeskTop Search Professional include the Copernic Agent Personal engine for searching the web? Or would I still have to use two separate programs?

Steve Amos Guess I have to pass on Copernic.

I asked whether or not Copernic indexed PDF markup as well as regular PDF text, which it DID NOT do the last time I tested it, and never received an answer.

So I'm assuming it STILL doesn't do it.

Oh, well.

Kelly Major I still don't see a Windows 8 release even on your web site today, Since you quit responding to posts mid-day yesterday and the deal is no longer the same I guess I'm glad I didn't go ahead and buy on faith.

OK, that sounds good. If I try it and it looks good will you honor yesterdays deal or is the lesser discount available now the only option?

I'll check the web site periodically throughout the day.

Copernic @Steve Amos. Sorry, no we do not index and search PDF markup. I've sent it to the product owner to add it in the feature requests!
