What are people saying about DeskRule

Chris According to the fine print, this is a one version only.

'Upgrades to future versions of the software will require additional payment. Installing a new version may overwrite the existing version and invalidate your license key.'

Is thus correct?
Dec 2 2015 at 5:04am Copy Link

nikos bozinis the version of deskrule you buy will be yours to keep forever. You also get guaranteed upgrades and support for a year. After that there is no guarantee but you could get more free upgrades for some time.

Petr Hello Nikos,

I checked your website for details. Please confirm that:

#1. DeskRule will not use extra disk space for its own indexing?

#2. How does DeskRule search files that are not in drives or folders that I've specified to NOT INDEX (in Windows)? I have SSD drives so they're fast, but I understand indexed searches are always fastest. So, how does it work on folders not indexed?

#3. Can I install one purchase on my desktop and laptop? (2 computers for same user)?

Thank you.

singularity As far as I know from the trial.. the app depends on Windows search Index?
Dec 3 2015 at 2:46am Copy Link
1
nikos bozinis deskrule doesn't depend on the widnows search index, however it takes advantage of it. If there is an index, it will first check it for quick results, otherwise it uses its own search engine without an index.

regarding licensing, the license is per user, so if you have 10 computers to yourself you only need one key for all of them

So far the app performs well.
Do consider upgrading the UI. The icons and window looks a bit dated on Win 8 +

Andreas Hoffmann Hi Nikos, just evaluating your software... looks fine!
You write on your website, Deskrule can search as fast as "everything" on local NTFS?
And I already see, DeskRule searches in DOC-Files. Does it search in DOCX and PDF, too?

Are there any plans for a service or so, as everything did, for MFT(?)-Searching, so that the main-program does not need to run as admin?
Thanks in advance + greetings - Andreas

Dunking Tried to download the demo for this and got blocked by Comodo - source of malware, it says. Thinking that bits wouldn't allow anything dodgy, I overrode Comodo and gave it a whirl anyway. Imagine my surprise when, on completing install, Firefox comes up and wants to install the Cookie Controller add-on.

Was this just a coincidence or what?

Hourglass94 Nikos
Can this tool search between drives?

eg I have data drives D,E,F,G and H would I be able to search for a criteria with one search or would I need to search each drive seperately?

thanks in advance

nikos bozinis @Andreas
the program Everything is a misnomer since it only searches for filenames, whereas DeskRule actually searches for _everything_, including file contents and around 300 file properties :)

DeskRule supports MFT search also but you must run it as administrator for that extra quick search mode. For more information see the quickstart guide (click on the question mark toolbar icon)

@Dunking
Deskrule isn't a virus and it isn't bundled with any add ons either

@Hourglass94
an easy way to search all your drives is to root the search on MyComputer (ThisPC). Either right click on MyComputer icon and pick "search with DeskRule" command, or click on the folder selector within deskrule to choose MyComputer as the root of the search

Andreas Hoffmann Hi Nikos,
thanks for your answer., will take a look!
Any idea for me about searching in DOCX- and PDF-Files?
Dec 3 2015 at 9:45am Copy Link
0
nikos bozinis if you have the necessary filters installed then it searches in DOCX and PDF. If you find that it doesn't search some file type there are free filters you can install that can be used both for deskrule and windows search. For more information see here
www.zabkat.com/x2plugins.htm
I recommed you installed the free trial and see what kind of files it can search for you. Chances are you already have all the necessary filters

nikos bozinis sorry I don't know this filesearchy, but if you check the website (www.zabkat.com/deskrule) there is a comparison table for some big names in desktop search. Of course don't take my word for it, make use of the free trial version to double check it works for you. You have at least 12 hours to make up your mind :)

Dunking @nikos:
"@Dunking

I beleive Comodo is concerned about the website rather than the file, but I don't know why.

Concerning the add-on, I can report that it was indeed a coincidence. I am sure you appreciate that one needs to be quite circumspect nowadays when trying unknown software, but I am happy to acknowledge that deskrule is perfectly straight-up software.

Edward Smith I, like Robert, use file searchy. So far I am extremely happy with the program, and I am not looking just another program to add to my computer. However, if this program has a distinct vantage, I would love to know about it. I am not asking anyone to do my homework for me, but if anyone has experience with both programs, I would be interested in their experience.
Dec 4 2015 at 4:03am Copy Link

nikos bozinis I haven't used filesearchy but from a quick overview of their website I see it searches for filenames, file contents and basic date/size properties. DeskRule offers you a choice of 300 file properties to search, and very fast contents search in indexed locations. If you just search for filenames then DeskRule doesn't offer any advantages
zabkat - Dec 4 2015 at 4:32am Copy Link

Dunking "DeskRule offers you a choice of 300 file properties to search" For anyone that hasn't tried this in anger, it will do matches like "subversion revision <= 100" (alone or combined with all the other possible things). If you need/want that kind of thing, I don't know of any other searcher/indexer that will do it.

Edward Smith I purchased this last time it was offered on BDJ, and I will buy an additional license today. I have X1 and stopped using it because this works so well. Minimal resources and very quick - and a crazy amount of options. Makes finding files easy.

Danny DeskRule is as good or better as Copernic Desktop Search?
Jun 24 2016 at 11:45am Copy Link

nikos bozinis @Danny licensing is per USER (and any # of computers)

@Techtoysavvy xplorer2 ultimate has almost as capable search engine, but as deskrule is purpose built for search, it goes the extra mile (e.g. advanced Boolean expressions and the desktop detective)

@Danny deskrule can do many more properties than Copernic or any other search engine, see the comparison table at the bottom of the website

zabkat - Jun 24 2016 at 1:59pm Copy Link

singularity @Danny yeah it works better than Copernic in terms of advanced serches based on properties and real fast in folder search. Lighter and without it's own Index. But for a normal user copernic works very well and has a way better UI.

Deskrule could use much better user interface. Adjusting the coloumns constant width is a pain. And icons are dated for modern windows versions. Looks like an app made for XP in windows 10.
Jun 24 2016 at 2:28pm Copy Link

TAPTRONIC I like the old looking interface. Cant stand that windows 10 / ios / etc "flat look".. PLEASE dont discard the old interface if you rework it! At least give some of us the option to keep the old one. :-)
Jun 24 2016 at 3:40pm Copy Link

singularity @NC Buyer I did not mean the metro look. i meant the way Evernote and Directory Opus do with their UI. Not dated and not too modern. They get along well with any Windows versions. Also the windows are responsive. No need to arrange. These apps adjusts itself to screen sizes.
If i compare with another search utility I would prefer a more compact and resposive UI of BinaryFortress Fileseek pro, and it is not "flat" and "modern"... which by the way does searches pretty quickly too, though properties and options are no where close to Deskrules.

nikos bozinis @dtouch not sure what you mean by "Adjusting the coloumns constant width". You can right click on a toolbar and pick "auto arrange" menu
zabkat - Jun 24 2016 at 10:07pm Copy Link
0
singularity @nikos For eg: I like my apps maximized windows. And if the apps have columns.. i would adjust its width to my preference. Deskrule resets that each time I launch it unless I am missing some setting to preserve coulumn widths. I don't want to auto arrange or manually arrange each time.

Petr I've been waiting for a deal on DeskRule. Glad it is coming. I have some pre-sale questions please?

Q1: Does DeskRule build it's own index? Or, does it use a pre-existing index that's a part of Microsoft's search? My concern, for my large disks and data stores, that a separate index would use too much disk space.

Q2: I've previously tried to use your software on another machine. Although it has powerful options, I find the user interface not intuitive. I think a proper tutorial video with several explicit examples would make me more confident. Better yet, several short, separate video tutorials to cover specific search scenarios. What visual resources do you have available to get me up-and-running with your software quickly?

Q3: Often, I want to have quick access to certain folders so I can save new files or locate existing files. Does DeskRule have a quick option to search and list only folders (on local and network drives)?

Q4: I am looking for ways to edit certain meta data fields (tags and comments) and then quickly create a list of files and/or folders with certain specified tags. For example, I might want to assign a tag "project5" to certain files that are saved in various folders. Then, quickly search and list all files that have "project5" as one of the tags. The tag field may have several tags entered, for example: "project5; licensedMedia; sourceIStock", with DeskRule being able to pick out any occurrence of a tag.

Q5: Lastly, this may not be a DeskRule questions, but I'm looking for a utility or file manager that enables me to edit file meta data fields (such as tag and comments) in a spreadsheet-like layout. I want to quickly assign the same tags to multiple files. Ideally, to be able to edit meta data fields like with a spreadsheet with cells in rows and columns. Can you point me to any such utility or file manager? And, will DeskRule be able to search on such meta data? Thank you.

Q2: there are many demo videos available under the help (question mark) toolbar button. You can also press F1 key to see the help
Q3: there is an attribute available called IsFolder. This allows you to search for files, folders or both. Click the + toolbar button to add this rule
Q4: deskrule can search for tags. If you add two or more tags, it will try to find BOTH. However you can use the Advanced search panel to specify that you want to find the tags in an OR fashion.

Chuck Brotman Hi,

I'm a long time (and happy) user of Nikos's xplorer2-ult, I have some questions about this offer -- and yes I know I'm late to the party and probably missed it... :(

It seems that the pricing here is the same as on the zabkat Deskrule Website. I.E. $20 for the lite version $40 for the full. If I'm understanding this correctly, This is not a "deal", just a restatement of the standard offer! What am I missing????

Nikos makes great software and if there is a discount on the full version, I'd love to take advantage of it. . .

PortablesFan In the Fine Print here I read, "Upgrades to future versions of the software will require additional payment. Installing a new version may overwrite the existing version and invalidate your license key. Support is provided up to when the next major version is released." (The first part sounds more like a "giveaway" license policy...)

However, on your website FAQ (http://zabkat.com/deskrule/faq.htm), it says "What is the upgrade policy for DeskRule?
At present there's no decision either way; upgrades may be free or there may have to be paid for. When you purchase DeskRule you are guaranteed to receive free updates and support for at least a year."

What upgrade/support policy ACTUALLY governs today's deal?
Thank you!

HJ B Nothing beats the application called "Everything" for searches based on file name or various properties.

I purchased the "standard" version of this program, "DeskRule", becaue it does a pretty good job of enabling search of content, I have yet to explore that various options it provides.

I used the program for a while yesterday on the trial basis, before purchasing.

I found peculiar, however, the program registration process. After purchase, you get an email that provides a registration key and a registration reference.

I went to the program to enter the registration key, but I could find nonr of the typical menu items or buttons that start the registration/activation process. I went back to the developer's email, and found the following sentence: "To use it, first copy out the key text above (e.g. using ), then start DeskRule and in the opening screen click on the button I HAVE AN UNLOCK KEY, then follow the instructions. If you can't see this opening screen, please wait one day, DeskRule won't nag you on the very first day!"

So, today, I restarted the program, but no Unlock Key Button appeared. I will wait a few more days to be nagged. It is strange as are some of the other aspects to the interface..

The documentation is in the form of a webpage. It is unfortunate that this develop[er and many others fail to put their documentation in the form of a pdf.

Sandy User I think it's a bit of bait and switch marketing. It indicates AT THE TOP that the price is $19.95 - plain as day for DeskRule. But if you try to buy it, that turns out to be the price for the Lite version, which isn't what this webpage says (at the top), though at the bottom of this page in smaller (but bold) print there is an admission of the two version and two prices.

But then even if you click to buy the Lite version, the price comes up at $39.95.

On top of that my current version is called Desktop (search) Rulez. This one is called DeskRule. I have no certain confidence that they are the same product. Maybe they are, maybe they are not. But there is no clarity, for me. Certainly not the same name. They are both Zabkat. When did the name change?

But on the DeskRule website ( https://www.zabkat.com/deskrule/lite.htm ), it states "Price Per Seat $20 / $40".

The terminology "Price per Seat" implies that it can only be used on one machine, which is contradicted by the statement on the BitsDuJour site.

nikos bozinis deskrule searches under a root folder, or a collection of root folders. If you don't search everywhere but e.g. under your documents folder or something even more particular, deskrule won't search in c:\windows or program files. If you want more control I recommend the other program we have called xplorer2, where you can setup a folder blackist in the registry to permanently exclude certain folders. See www.zabkat.com

Michael R. How does the search work?

Does DR run every time through all files on the harddisk or on previously stored (or a mixture on both)?

Is it possible to scan all external drives (and save their fileinfo-data) and search for fitting content without they being plugged in?
Oct 30 2018 at 10:42pm Copy Link

nikos bozinis deskrule uses the windows search index for your local hard drives. It is also possible to add external drives to the search index for faster search, but they must be connected if you want to search in them

to configure the search index (add external drives etc) use your START button and type "indexing options". This is all outside deskrule

deskrule can also search without the search index, but the search will be slower. Why don't you get the free trial and see for yourself?

Michael R. Hi, thanks for the fast answer. Point is, I have a lot of harddisks, even some 3,5'' from former desktops (while now I only have a laptop), which would require to put them into an adapter, one by one. This is no problem, doing it once, but every single time for every HD would be not only not comfortable, but would also damage the harddisk-interface.

Do you have plans to make an external harddisk searchable by your search-index files, without having to plug it in - of course with probably a smaller variety of search options, because only few file-data are stored within the index-files - in a future version?

Right now I am looking for some pics, taken within a certain date-range and could be stored anywhere (if they still exist any more). So probably the data in the index-file would be sufficent for me... in the meantime and sometimes I am looking for certain files (e.g. pics within a certain range), which could be on any HD (or might be even lost at all).

Rob Hi Nikos, are you planning on discounting the PRO version? I'm interested in the advanced Boolean features and the ability to store macros.

I've some hesitation about buying it though, the UI is so unintuitive. No doubt about it it's a powerful search app but I find the interface so un-user friendly. I've watched the tutorial videos and even then don't have much of a clue. Of course this is my own subjective view and please take it as a users constructive critique.

I can't seem to find any user options - (to turn off the voice prompts). Also I can't seem to find how to do a simple contents search on two separate terms. If I'm searching a PDFs contents for the word Enlightenment and the word Foucault. Perhaps you could enlighten me ;)
Thanks.

nikos bozinis @Michael R
you gave me a good idea about this "offline searching" so I will definitely consider it for a future deskrule version

@Mark Harper
deskrule is quite similar to xplorer2 ultimate, however as it is purpose built for search it has some advantages, e.g. Boolean complex searches, finding pictures by geotag (map). I also find the UI cleaner, but other people disagree :)

@Rob
both full and lite deskrule editions are on sale
regarding its UI, I am not sure which part you find unintuitive; each search property has its own box. If you need NAME, you add it in name (full name or part, or wildcard or regular expression). If you leave a box blank, it doesn't take part into the search.
If you put in two words in the CONTENTS box, it will search for both terms (answering your other question). For more accurate search control you can use the Advanced search panel.
To turn off speech and other options, use the OPTIONS toolbar button

Robert User @Ben User:
"any way of purchasing a lifetime update option like Xplorer2 Ultimate? "

Good question but I notice that part of your question was not answered.
In the Check for updates dialog, it suggests that there is a Lifetime option:

"Before downloading a newer version please keep in mind that upgrade charges may apply (unless you own the free lifetime upgrades cover)"

I have not seen any reference that a lifetime license is being offered however.

Also, the Fine Print section suggests that there are not any updates (minor version numbers) that can be installed:

"Upgrades to future versions of the software will require additional payment. Installing a new version may overwrite the existing version and invalidate your license key."

It is not clear what "new version" means in this case. If it also includes minor version numbers (which would be newer versions technically), you cannot even install the minor version numbers of the software from what you started with. Installing minor updates is considered industry standard but maybe not in this case, which is the first time I have seen wording like this for licensing.

The only download links are for the last published version, which is currently 2.0.0.0. So if you purchased a license for any 1.x version, you cannot download the last 1.x version, which appears to have been 1.6.2.0 (22 October 2018) per the Changelog.

All of this is rather odd given that it comes from developer Nikos Bozinis, the same developer as xplorer2 Ultimate, which does have a lifetime license available, and has the older versions available for download so users can catch up with what their license allows.

I hope Nikos can straighten this out in favor of users that want to continue supporting him.

Ben User Hi Robert, I purchased the DeskRule in the last sale out of trust in Nikos. So here are some of my thoughts: 1) Update/Upgrade: I'm not sure what Nikos have in mind in the future about DeskRule's licensing, but the fine print is currently incorrect. You can freely install 2.0.0 without needing to pay for upgrade. More so, there isn't even a place on the website to purchase upgrade. 2) UI I would still really really like a lock option on all the menu/search/filter bars because they are extremely easy to change location and size :< 3) Offline Index I really wish there's a way to manually initiate and rebuild the new offline index, and an option to only search in that index. Makes disabling windows indexing service a lot viable.

Mark Harper Does this offer include lifetime upgrades to all future versions? If not how much will the cost for a version upgrade be?

How much would it be to pay for lifetime upgrades as I have these with Xplorer2 Ultimate?

As a license holder for Xplorer2 does DeskRule give anything more than the search facility in Xplorer2 Ultimate?

The fine print states that license activation is not required but I'm sure that it is so I wondered if all the other details in the fine print were complete.

The only reason I'm looking at other options is that the search function is a little clunky.
Does DeskRule create it's own index for the offline catalog or does it use Windows search to create this too?
Apr 2 2019 at 8:43am Copy Link

nikos bozinis the offline catalog index database is created by deskrule. It is possible to add a local hard disk like c:\ in the "offline" catalog (see the registry tweak binFlags in the help file https://www.zabkat.com/de...tm#opt_reg) but it won't be kept up to date with files that change from day to day. The catalog is meant for drives that don't change (much)

Marc User @nikos Is it possible to trigger a reindex by command line. I don't really need the current days files in the index.
Apr 2 2019 at 8:53am Copy Link
0
nikos bozinis you can add the same device (hard disk) in the offline catalog (index) which will effectively overwrite the old version. If you just store basic properties it could be doable. But you cannot do it in the command line. You could possibly do it with a UI macro though

nikos bozinis @Gary User deskrule uses IE for the help system. All content is local and there is no need to worry about "security". If you prefer to use your own browser you can manually locate the file called HELP.HTM in the installation folder

@HJB, deskrule searches in 2 phases, first using the index and then using a slower mode of its own. If your external drives are not in the windows search index, they won't be found in pass #1. You can click on the CLICK FOR ROBUST SEARCH button to initiate phase #2 (slow) search.

If your external drives are permanently connected, you can add them in the windows search index. If they are not, you can use deskrule's CATALOG (see the help file for details)

Richard Blake The offline catalog intrigues me. Once I have loaded it with directory/attribute data from all my external hard drives, flash drives, etc, can DeskRule analyze it and report all duplicate files (same size and MD5 or other hash value, if those are collected) across volumes, or all files with duplicate name (possibly different revisions of same file)? (In such cases I would not search for a particular name - I am interested only in locating potential duplicates.) Can it find groups of sound files of equal or close duration (e.g. 10s or 2%, as I may specify), regardless of type (mp3, ogg, wav, etc). Can DR present a directory listing of an offline volume, i.e. list all files in the volume, in various sequences (alpha within directory; alpha; rev date; size)? Does the catalog record total space consumed and free space in each volume? That would be of value if I wish to reorganize data, e.g. move contents of some smaller volumes to a larger one. Thanks.

nikos bozinis @gary user, clearly robust search shouldn't be crashing, so if you want to take this further, please send me an email and we'll figure it out

if deskrule cannot preview or find text in PDF, probably you don't have a pdf text or/and preview handler installed. You can get handlers if you install something like Sumatra PDF: www.zabkat.com/blog/pdf-r...ration.htm

Gary User OK - I'll email you about the robust search issue, but as for a PDF viewer, I use the full acrobat DC desktop program. X1 Search has no problem displaying pdf's in its view pane. Chrome has no problem displaying pdf's. So I suspect the problem is with DeskRule. Is it possible that Adobe has some sort of licensing requirement you would have had to purchase to use Acrobat as a pane viewer? If so, why not just be honest with consumers?

Egon User This is not to be seen as criticism, I'm perfectly aware of the market situation, and this is a very good offer here.

So: The search for "deskrule outlook" did not get any hit (yet); search tools which include OL searches cost 2 to 3 times the price here; it's obvious though that OL inclusion would make this offer even more appealing.

And: Again, I'm aware of the market, and other search tools don't offer this functionality either, but especially with the pic and audio / video metadata search, an EDIT functionality would be of outstanding value. You either use the file system ("folders") and possibly tags (as I do), or you use the metadata, in some dedicated application (or some do-it-all app for video, audio, pics altogether), and very often, finding is not enough, but BULK changes (i.e. on subsets of the set = on "selections" from "finds") are what you want (instead of one-by-one), and then, problems start, so there is room for a metadata editor of this quality here; the additional programming work might be reasonable?

Oh, and just a question, from the "fine print" here, you could read that ANY update, incl. minor ones, are paid, whilst only help is available for the full length of the major version. ("Upgrades to future versions of the software will require additional payment. Installing a new version may overwrite the existing version and invalidate your license key. Support is provided up to when the next major version is released.") I suppose this is not worded perfectly, but would mean that minor updates are included though? It's really not that obvious, so clarification would be helpful! Thanks!

3. Can this program be used to search for meta data in pdfs?

4. There does not seem to be a built in global search option, e.g. "give me all files that contain the word 'Obama'". regardless of date. If the date field is left blank, it only seems to return files with a modification date of the current year.

a. The previewer in deskrule (press CTRL+Q keys if you don't see it) will highlight all the keywords you search for in documents. Press F3 in there to see the next hit. As for external programs that open the documents. it's generally not possible to link them with deskrule. The exception is if you have xplorer2 (editor2) installed, then when you press F3 to view a matched file, then another F3 will take you to the first keyword. But this only would work for plain text files

b. unicode/utf8 and all other encodings are handled automatically

Kelly Hamblin @ Rober Crombie - Try Agent Ransack, the free (older) version of File Locator Pro. It should work on an XP machine, but it works differently than Zabcat's offering. It will search anything and everything from its own interface. If you search for a word, it will show every file that contains the word and the surrounding text so you can better determine which file you need.

Robert Crombie Kelly,
Thanks for responding.
I just purchased the full version (aka Standard) of DeskRule.
I will copy the folders from my XP PC to my network thumb drive (shoved into my modem), and search from my W8.1 PC
Rob
PS (To others)
The interface could do with much more informative ToolTips.
Sound and Closed Captions appear to be missing on the youtube video
There are a few more videos on youtube which I will check out later.

nikos bozinis @robert, the email you received with the unlock key has instructions for using it. If you wait for a day or 2, deskrule will ask for the key anyway

I Think so!
When you click on the "Get this deal" button, two options appear: Light Version (9,95) or Standard Version (19,97).

M User I bought this tool here longer time ago and is a topper :)

One question though: how do I delete the search history? For example I entered 'decoration' in the 'Name' search field.
When I type 'de' ... 'decoration' appears in a pull-down list. How to delete this history?

As a second note, the Help menu (F1) still pops up Internet Explorer instead of a user's default browser (or Edge)?

Thanks in advance.

nikos bozinis deskrule (usually) saves settings in the registry. So you need some registry editing to change such things as histories etc, while deskrule is NOT running. To get rid of IE for help delete the registry value binFlags under GENERAL key.
For more information see the section ADVANCED SETTINGS TWEAKING in the manual (F1 key)

Brenda Adams Support for this company's products is top-notch! I have purchased several in the past and have one more to buy in next days. Can't go wrong. Great service and products. (I have this software plus Xplorer2, and will soon buy D-clone!! :) So yeah, I recommend.

M User Thank you for the reply Nikos.

I would, however, like to make the suggestion that this 'intensive' process of clearing search history could be applied via a button ... it would make it a lot more user-friendly to see this, rather logical, feature pop up in an upcoming changelog ;)

Regards.

Gary User I bought a license to DeskRule standard yesterday. I already have X1Search but X1 Search is changing its licensing to a per computer instead of a per user, so the next renewal date will double the cost of X1. However, searching files for content using just one word returned 24 files (Excel, Word, PDF, and Text) with X1 Search, but only 12 files (Excel and Word) with DeskRule. Desk Rule didn't find the pdf's or the text files, and missed 2 of the Excel files. The search was run after rebuilding the windows index.

nikos bozinis @gary deskrule searches under a folder, so first of all are you sure that all the files found by X1 are under the same folder?
another possibility is that some of the files (folders) may not be in the system index. Deskrule has an option for secondary "slow" search, did you try it?

Gary User i searched the hard drive. The "slow search" found a few more files, including a pdf file, but it has been running for more than 30 minutes and hasn't found all the files that X1 found on the same hard drive.

nikos bozinis X1 keeps its own index. Deskrule uses the windows system index, or its own slow search. To speed things up make sure you add all the folders where you keep documents in the search index

Gary User after a little over of 2 hours of searching DeskRule found the same files that X1 search found. So I'm happy that Desk Rule was eventually able to locate the same files as X1 but I'm disappointed in the amount of time it took.

nikos bozinis if you go "slow" mode you need to choose your search folders wisely. You don't need to search your entire hard disk where e.g. a search inside "my documents" would suffice

Gary User if I knew where the files were located I probably wouldn't need to search at all. The purpose of a search app is to find files when I don't know the location.

nikos bozinis most probably they won't be in C:\windows!

Gary User most of my data is on a separate drive, it is not on the operating drive. I only index the data drive. I keep my files in subdirectories, but if file names and subdirectories were a perfect system, there would be no need for a search app to begin with. For example, the test search was for information related to an annual service performed on my vehicle. Both X1 search and DeskRule found pdf's, word docs, text files, and excel files related to that subject spread over numerous subdirectories, such as the banking subdirectories for the years the service was performed, the personal property subdirectory for the vehicle, the receipts subdirectories for the years payments were made, etc.
