John H Organizes My Huge monitor. YAY!

This works great on my old XP Pentium 4 with only 512 of memory on my HP 24 inch screen. Offers so much more capability than what Windows 7 gives you by dragging open windows to the edge or corners. This is just what I had been hoping for to use with my 24 inch 1920 X 1200 screen.

Plus I can use it concurrently on all my PCs. Thank you for trusting your customers.

Is a Linux version coming soon?

Steve @ Mizage @Peter. Sorry for the trouble. I just want to make sure I understand your problem. The shortcut is for showing the Divvy panel, so Divvy must be running (visible in the system tray). Also, make sure you have the setting "Use global shortcut to display panel" enabled. I've just tested with CTRL+Tab and it works on my Win7 system, even with a DE keyboard configured. Feel free to contact us via email to work through any issues you may be happening.

Jaydeem Does one licence cover both MAC and Windows versions (I use both systems) or are two separate licences required please?

Steve @ Mizage @Jaydeem Mac and Windows versions of Divvy have separate licenses because we pay different developers. However, we have a discounted bundle of both licenses and the above discount applies there as well.

Genie au Travail There is a problem with the setup file.
It doesn't ask me the path for the installation folder.
The files of the software are installed in the Application Data folder of the current user and a bunch of files (24) are installed at the root of the C partition...

Rasty Groman It's cool application. I like simplicity of functonality and graphical interface the most. But it's not working with some applications/windows. Instead of switching to selected/activated window it switch to desktop. Please, what could be the reason/reasons of such a behaviour? Thanks

Roberto sometimes i cant make the mouse selection properly, the app interface dont let me drag the box. I have to close it and open again.
im using the pc version. This is a nice software but im still not sure about it can run smootly

Steve @ Mizage @Peter We are looking to move in the direction or managing multiple windows at once, but that's not planned until at least Divvy 2.0

Also, you mention having issues with shortcuts not working until Divvy is showing. Be sure to checkout the documentation for a description of Local vs Global shortcuts. It's possible you configured your shortcuts to be Local, which are only active when Divvy is showing. This is by design in order to help prevent collisions with shortcuts in other applications.

Steve @ Mizage @Rasty I'm sorry for the trouble. Please let us know which applications/windows are misbehaving. Some applications use non-standard windows and simply don't like their windows being resized, and we can't really help that.

Roberto im using windows xp sp3. using a wired mouse. i cant reproduce it.. just happen. i set a couple of shortcuts to solve this (im a keyboard guy :)

Chris @ Mizage @Genie: Sorry about the clutter. As Peter said, that's a side-effect of the visual C++ runtime libraries that need to be installed, and are safe to delete. Microsoft has never been very careful about keeping it's user's machines clean.

Genie au Travail Please, consider to add on your website an installer without Microsoft C++ files.
All the C++ runtimes (2005, 2008, 2010) are already installed on my computer and I don't want to have to delete these files each time I will update Divvy.

Avi S Just purchased and installed it (Win XP). This is one AWESOME utility, providing an immediate productivity boost in my workflow.
The window resizing interface is clever and amazingly intuitive.
I was especially pleased to find that the program is very generous with its keyboard shortcut options, allowing users to configure global shortcuts for every possible screen position. For instance, I've configured Ctrl-Alt-6 to resize my window to the left half of the screen, Ctrl-Alt-7 to the right half, plus many more. (If you are wondering why those shortcuts make sense - I'm using an MS Ergonomic keyboard - so the 6 and the 7 sit on the borders of the right and left halves of the keyboard).
Highly recommended!!!

Frank Stephens In the PC world, there are tons of similar utilities, choosing is a matter of personal preference. Most versions of Windows have some limited abilities which most people aren't aware of, Win7 has dropped those and added others. All of these utilities have different UIs and functionality. I like NTWind WindowSpace. WinSplit Revolution is freeware. Actual Tools Actual Window Manager has tons of features but is invasive. Project Windy on CodePlex started out as a freeware clone of Divvy but went down its own path. AlternativeTo WindowSpace lists numerous alternatives, I'm mentioning so that people will choose the features and UI which suits them.

Noggin The Nog is the trial version fully functional? I wonder what 'click to record shortcut' on the general tab means. I cannot follow the following extract from the help file. Where do you enter the name? Where do you enter a keyboard shortcut? What is the relationship between adjusting the grid and dragging out the selection? Perhaps it is all too obvious to understand, but I cannot make it work.

Start by entering a name for this shortcut, this is used to help you identify the shortcut in the
Shortcuts Preferences list. Decide if you want this shortcut to be Local or Global and check
the “Global Shortcut” box if needed. Enter a keyboard shortcut and Divvy will let you know if
there are any obvious conficts with your choice. Adjust the Grid if you want, adding/
removing row/columns as desired and/or subdivide the grid for more precise control. Finally,
drag out your selection on the Grid.

Frank Stephens Ctrl-Tab is a poor choice for a Windows shortcut, it's already used by many applications, including IE.

Noggin The Nog Ps I have cracked it now. The solution is to find the video and watch it. Perhaps the help file could be made a little more explicit in the area of shortcuts.

Ron K I've been using Divvy three days now. This is the most usable window manger I've ever seen. It's not perfect, and there are more features I'd hope to see in the future, but I consider it a bargain at the regular price, so with the BDJ discount, it's a must.

For those of us wishing to transform multiple windows at once, maybe we could come up with an AutoHotkey macro and convince Mizage to host it as a third-party download? Just a thought...

_*_ I really wanted to purchase this program and have been waiting since it showed up on Bits.

After reading that you cannot control the install location I will have to pass on this software. I run a SSD for my C drive to hold as little as possible other than the OS itself.

Is it possible to implement the ability of choosing the install location, please?

Roberto Frank Stephens: thanks for the review. NTWind WindowSpace looks great. The stay on top feature is really usefull, and the windows tile verticaly sounds quite well (this can be a good macro), magnets are a plus too.
However, Divvy deal is good enought, i can recomend to use it together with the freeware deskpins (make a window on top).

Keith Norton This is a handy little utility and seems worth the money even to support their efforts. It works across multiple monitors, but one may have to reset the size when moving a window to a different sized monitor. I found some windows it would not size, such as the IE9 View Downloads window, but there's no compelling reason to resize that one anyway.

Steve @ Mizage @Wm Shore Licensing is either "per-user" or "per-computer", so:

1) If you have multiple computers and you're the only one who uses them, please feel free to use a single license on all of them.

2) If multiple users on a single computer, one license applies here as well.

3) If you have multiple computers and multiple users, we'd appreciate if you'd purchase an additional license per-computer or per-user, whichever is fewer.

Thanks Frank for a good rundown. It looks like Divvy has more of a secure niche in its homecourt Mac, and is one of a number of good players in Windows. Neat for many, hard to decide if you are one of those "check all programs" types.

The "Virtual Desktop" programs overlap this concept, and there are many. ManageDesk has ManageDesk (also "WinArranger Free) while GoScreen is one that is nice for just the one virtual desktop function. (Switch from my Office programs to my WebDev programs to my Research programs). Dexpot is popular but there is a similar concern about invasive. There are 5-10 other significant players.

Right now, I just work with the OS but these programs like Divvy can be sweet.

BUT:

The grid should appear right under my mouse cursor when I hit the hot keys. I have a large screen and hate scrolling across to the grid..... I bought Divvy to cut down on scrolling.

What the heck does it need 13MB of memory for? It seems to use lots of resources.

Steve @ Mizage @JohnH Are you on Mac or Windows? For Mac, 13MB is pretty darn low. I've done a lot of research into making minimal apps. If you compile the smallest Cocoa app possible, it still uses 6MB of memory. Every window takes up about 5MB memory.
