What are people saying about Dr. Explain

Chad Biggerstaff After reading a bit and watching the video I was very interested in trying out this program and have just finished a quick testing of it.
I've been wondering for awhile now why all help authoring programs don't do exactly what Dr. Explain does as it automates the manual system I've been using for some time to create help files. I've had it on my to do list for some time to write a similar program, now I'll be able to buy it for far less than the many hours it would have taken me to create and Indigo has taken it further than I imagined it. I'm looking forward to purchasing this. Well done, glad I stumbled across this. It will save me many hours and actually get me to create help files on programs I was on the fence about doing so.

Jonathan Keener Is there any chance this might be compatible with Adobe Flex/Flash/Air applications in the future? I love the concept, and tried out the trial, but currently it can't identify the controls on a Flash app in a browser. If it's something that is being considered, it may convince me to purchase with the deal today.

Actually Dr.Explain can parse most of SWF Flash applications, e.g. check player on YouTube. You can send a link to your Flex\Air application to info-at-drexplain-dot-com and we'll test Dr.Explain on it.

Frank Stephens It makes me angry that I'm not receiving emails from Indigo Byte Systems.  I bought this previously on BDJ and just barely missed qualifying for the free upgrade.  I can't get whatever the upgrade price is because I'm not receiving emails from Indigo Byte Systems (I just used Gmail to send myself a message using the email address which I gave Indigo and it arrived instantly), so if I want this version I'll have to buy it again, using a different email address.

Rune Johannessen Hi again, I just found out that the Advanced version in fact IS discounted. Had to press the Buy Now button in the upper part of this page to find out ;). Another question. Does Dr.Explain comes with a Norwegian dictionary for spell-checking? Rune
May 20 2010 at 6:13pm Copy Link

Dennis Crane Rune,
Dictionaries can be made with a special utility that we ordered together with Polar Spell checker component. We cannot share this utility with third parties, but if you could send us a plain list of Norwegian words (simple dictionary) then we could compile a dictionary in Polar Spellchecker format for you.

Frank Stephens I just wanted to say that Dennis Crane of Indigo Byte Systems did make good on his word.  I had already ordered this 4.0 version using a different email address, and Dennis refunded the difference in price between the upgrade and this offer.  Actually, the difference was quite small, so this BDJ offer is a good deal.

I have been searching for a help authoring program for the past 3 months, but it needs to be linux compatible.

I'm trying to build a help file system for linux users. Most all of whom are newbies.

The application itself can be run in Windows OS. However it may produce help files in HTML and PDF formats that can be read on Linux or other OS.

Michael R. Is there a way to write some documentation-text inside a source-program, e.g. C++ and when creating a Dr.Explain project, tell Dr. Explain, where the appropriate explanation to a topic can be found inside the source-text and make Dr. Explain extract this information into the project (and of couse update it automatically each time a documentation is created)? A kind of #include...

So a programmer which keeps his source-file documenation up to date would not need to update the documentation too.

David H (Seattle) Had my programming partner buy this last time around - WOW what a great way to create a professional-looking, easy-to-use help system. Highly recommended!

However, he skimped and bought the regular version, and now we wish we had some of the Pro features - is it possible to upgrade with this deal?

Michael R. Because software changes, how easy is it to update a documentation because of a software change? For example: Are the old, already documented components of a window recognized and do only the new ones need to be added?

Is localization supported somehow, i.e. is there an easy way to translate an already created documentation into another language?

The answer to my question from Nov '10 about being able to write some documentation into a source-code and let it be overtaken from DrExplain was, it will come as module in a next version.

Can you give some idea about when this will be? Is it free of additional costs for the today's buyers? Will it be bi-directional, i.e. when doing some corrections inside Dr.Explain, is it possible, that the corrections are also written back into the source-code? Will C++Builder be supported?

Thanks a lot...

Dennis Crane @David Hyre: I've sent a link to your partner for upgrading. Check it out.

@Michael R: It's easy to update illustrations when a new version of your product is released. The image updating tool (in Designer mode) smartly replaces the underlying images while keeping all of the meta data and explanatory annotations.

Built-in localization with synchronization isn't currently supported. You must to create a copy of the project in another file and then translate it.

I'm afraid we won't make so deep integration (with bidirectional syncing) of source code & Dr.Explain soon. Most likely this will be a kind of Import feature (help from comments and definitions) like Doxygen do. However this will be done not earlier then the end of the year. Sorry.

It took a bit of searching before I could locate the actual comparison chart that listed all the differences between versions.

Dexter Bell Downloading and evaluating it now. Looks like great stuff.
One quick question. What is the best way, if possible, to integrate the help generated by Dr. Explain with other programs such as Help & Manual to create an integrated output from two or more sources?

Thanks,

Kevin Killion I'd like to keep help only visible to users when the app is in use, to avoid competitors seeing online web help or being mailed help documents.

Does Dr. Explain provide any features to keep help from being seen other when the app is active?

Chad Biggerstaff This is the absolute best Help file creator. I don't hate making help files any more and that's saying a lot. Dr. Explain makes it so easy that it makes you wonder why every help program doesn't work this way. You point it at your program and it takes snapshots of every windows control on it and draws leader lines to them and lets you type in your help info and then indexes and organizes it all and supports multiple outputs. For a help file generator it's very easy to use and still powerful enough. Can't recommend this program enough.

Luiz Marques I've been trying it for about an hour. The GUI extraction looks great (although it seems to lock up with both of my programs if I try to capture menus), just bought it.

Dennis Crane @Frank Kaspersky: Thank you!

@Dexter Bell: There is no direct integration. This could be a combination of export-import from one tool into another one. However, this is a cumbersome way.

@Kevin Killion: Your requirements are very specific. In Dr.Explain there is no built-in protection system as it would involve server side technologies. However, you can protect the manual yourselves by two common way:
1) Simplest way: Protect the on-line help folder (e.g. yoursite.com/help ) with password. It's a standard feature available in any web site control panel.
2) Create (reuse) your own authorization system and add authorization code into HTML template (in header) of your Dr.Explain project. So, any attempt to access the help file will invoke the authorization procedure and will either show the help content or will redurect the visitor to your login page.

@Chad Biggerstaff: Thank you for pleasant words. It's very inspiring for our team.

@Luiz Marques: Thanks for your order.

Ted H OK, so I've downloaded the demo and I'm trying to do a test run. I don't see anything in the HELP or elsewhere that tells me how to get DrExplain to do its automatic parsing of the software and creating the documentation. It looks like all manual labor from the interface. What's the trick?
May 11 2011 at 10:05am Copy Link

Pierre duParte I bought it and think it's OK. But it doesn't seem to integrate with the IDEs of the listed development systems. Looks like the programmer has to plug the help ids manually or use a .inc file (Delphi).

So a little disappointing in that sense.

Cheers

Ted H Hmmm, this is not nearly as automated as the website suggests. From their video you get the impression that somehow you run the application through DrExplain and it automatically extracts all the graphics and constructs a draft help manual where all you have to do is fill in the captions. That's not how it works, eh?
May 11 2011 at 11:58am Copy Link
0
Pierre duParte Not that I can see, Ted. However, after playing with it for several hours I will concede it is quite sophisticated in other ways. But plugging the help ids back into the developer's application does seem tedious. I've posted in their forums asking for clarification.

In summary, as a HELP designer/ editor it edges on brilliant. As a tool for the Delphi developer it is not as integrated as I'd expect.

But not bad for ~$100.00, the crashes not withstanding.

Ted H Actually, right up there at the top of this page it says "Dr. Explain analyzes the structure of your software's screens and forms and automatically generates numbered annotations for each GUI element - every button, icon, field, menu, and toolbar. As the help author, your job just got a lot easier. All you need to do is add the descriptive text to each annotation to explain each function".
So is this all BS or is there some hidden button somewhere that does this? Anybody from DrExplain out there who can shed some light on this?

Chad Biggerstaff This is the product on BitDuJour that surprised me most as I hadn't heard a trickle about it until I saw it on here. I can't explain (guess it's marketing budget) why this isn't the first program mentioned/suggested on any help documentation topic. It's by far the best I've ever used and it's affordable and a great deal today. I gladly praise it as I would like the developer to get a ton of sales and make sure this program keeps improving as it has since my initial purchase a couple versions back.
Dr Explain is exactly what I had been wanting for documenting my programs. It makes it so easy and fast it's no longer the worst part of developing an application. You point it to your program and it automatically recognizes every control and creates documentation for it - you of course have to provide the text explaining what the control does but it takes a snapshot and breaks out (assigns it a number for your text description) each piece. Plus it's easy to rearrange the breakouts and organize things how you want. Then tell it the outputs you want and it's done. I love this program for documenting. If you ever have to do support or need to create documentation on a program you must try this out.

In D.Explain, for each screen\step you may create a special topic with screenshot and description of its functions. Organize those topics consequently, and add links to "Next step" and "Previous step".

Could you please comment on this ... what activation does the product require? Online? Hardware footprint? As someone who upgrades his computers/components fairly often, this can make a difference to me. Thanks. -Brian

Kimmo Lahtinen i think your software is quite interesting. I used the trial version and it helped as I used it to "document" on program. I have two little questions:

1) In the policy it is saying that the program is licensed per user but the FAQ is quite clear that it is per PC. So I can not use it with both my laptop and desktop?

2) I was trying to document a radio button group and I took a picture from the program and wanted to translate the options on the right side of the picture, but I was not able to do it.

Michael R. Let's say I created a nice documentation for my software.
Some months later, I wanted to update it, because in the meantime I worked on the program and now it looks a little bit different. How easy or difficult is it to keep the documentation on track with the changed program?

As far as I understand, DrExplain is able to create snapshots of the forms of a program by itself. Will it, for example, recognize, that a certain form has been changed and some components have been added on it and extend the documentation, i.e. add some new indices and add some place for the description and a kind of TODO-entry, so the user can search for addiditional TODOs and enter his description?

~~~~~~~~~
Is there a more detailled explaining about the difference between the regular and the advanced version? Ideally in one of the many videos of yours?
Nov 4 2012 at 10:15pm Copy Link
0
Dennis Crane @Michael R.:
Currently Dr.Explain doesn't automatically recognize changes on forms and dialogs. However, it allows to easily update your documentation manually. Just use "Replace Screenshot" tool to replace the underlying images while keeping all of the meta data and explanatory annotations. There is no need to re-capture and re-annotate every window.
Also you can manually add callouts for new controls or remove them if required.
Joss I've compared this product with Heplinator and unlike it I have not found in Dr.Explain a normal text search. E.g. Dexter Bell One question: can I pull save individual topics in a project as HTML?
For instance I would like to use Dr. Explain to maintain documentation for all the dialogs in our program - more than 300 dialogs. Then when we need the html for one or more dialogs which will be used on the website or an email or another document we could export the html just for those dialogs and use it elsewhere.
Even exporting the whole file as HTML and selecting the topics in an HTML editor would be OK too, if it would not be to onerous (I'm going to try but thought I'd see if there is an easier way first).
Is that possible?
Actually this is possible. Closer to your second variant. Each help topic is exported as a separate HTML file. You can export the entire project and then pick separate required topics.
Or ... you can simply switch into HTML Preview for a certain topic in Dr.Explain and copy HTML page right from preview.
Dexter Bell Hi Dennis,
Thanks for the reply.
"Actually this is possible. Closer to your second variant. Each help topic is exported as a separate HTML file. You can export the entire project and then pick separate required topics. "
I've played around with this a bit using Expression Web and Outlook HTML emails as receivers of the html code. It works though it will take some scripting to get it to work smoothly. But that will be worth it. I have ordered the 'Advanced' version and look forward to using the program as the original source for all dialog based help, both for individual dialogs and for dialogs integrated into other HTML pages.
I realize this was not the intended use of Dr. Explain but I think it will work well with some initial effort.
Thanks,
Dexter
Shawn Dion I've tested the demo software via sandbox and I must admit I'm amazed at how it works... I did manage to crash the application when I asked it to map my right-click toolbar shortcuts but I'm sure it was the sandboxed environment that refused it.
Unfortunately for me with my medial leave I won't be able to take part of the offer but I would seriously recommend this program to anyone and I mean ANYONE who is what I call the local techie I'm talking about the one that solves ma, pa, brother-in-law etc.. Just wanted to clarify a couple things:
"Dr.Explain 4.0 Advanced License ($87)"
Yet, the demo version to download is 4.8.659?
Is this sale, selling the outdated version, hence the discount?
In the upgrade policy: "All minor updates (e.g. 4.x) are free. Major updates may be paid for those who ordered a license more than 12 months ago." Just to be 100% clear: Does this mean that major upgrades are free within 12 months from the license being issued?
R W Thank you for answering my question.
If I had desktop software to document, I wouldn't even consider using anything but Dr. Explain. My issue is that everything I have to document is either HTML based, or flash games.
While it is stated that it does both, I was only able to get the website menus (group of links) to be captured as a single image with no call-outs. Same for the flash games. None of the in game controls were issued callouts, so it was just a picture imported to the project.
I did play with documenting a desktop app, and it works REALLY well for that. Sadly, I need it for the features stated, and after 6 hours of trying to get it to do what I need it for, I am giving up.
Will the version 5 do either of these things well?
Thank you.
Alexander Deliyannis Can you clarify the differences between Regular and Advanced licenses? I found the full feature list at http://www.drexplain.com/...AMOmAAEAAA== but I don't understand which license covers what.
BTW, WebRoot gave this warning on the link to the website: "This website has been reported as unsafe". Not sure if it was for the drexplain.com website itself or the Plimus redirection though.
Dennis Crane Alexander: There is a feature comparison matrix at http://www.drexplain.com/...ntages.php
The problem is on Plimus - they use Flash plugin in their order form and browsers show alerts. That's bad for vendors. We try to push them to fix it asap.
Hawkeye It looks pretty good, however, I noticed a couple of things when exporting the sample with no moifications to HTML. I consider these two items a major concern and a possible deal breaker.
1. Under the Menu tab, selecting an item and then selecting a link in that page, the previous page does not go back to the actual previous page. It goes up one level in the menu, which could leave the user frustrated if he/she wants to back to the actual previous page that contained the link.
The online version exhibits the same behaviour which is not what I would expect.
Online Version: http://www.trueboxshot.co.../index.htm
Is their a setting to change the previous and next page functions?
2. When searching for "cover", the animated bar appears but nothing is found. I can select Menu and select an item and then go back to search and it is still shows the animated bar working with no finds. It doen't even display no records found or anything. It's like a dummy function.
The online version finds "cover" quickly.
Thanks,
Dennis Crane @Alexander: Thanks a lot. Welcome on board!
@Hawkeye:
1) Prev\next links are set for sequential navigation across topics. It's like chapters in a book - previous chapter / next chapter. For moving backward there is Back button in every web browser.
2) Most likely you tried search in Chrome browser locally. Chrome blocks all ajax scripts on local machines. That's an issue of Chrome. Once you upload your manual onto web server the search will work as expected. Or use another browser.
Indigo Byte Systems, LLC - Feb 4 2014 at 1:00pm Copy Link
Hawkeye @Dennis Crane,
1. I'm aware of the navigation in a web browser. A browser would take you back to the previous page that you last viewed. Dr. Explain, only does the next-prev page, from the menu. This is not the same behaviour as a web browser.
My concern, is that a user would get frustrated and want to go back where they were before clicking the link. This does not do that.
2. No, I do not have Chrome or any other browsers loaded, except Internet Explorer. You may have an issue or bug that you were not aware of.
Like I have said, these are two major issues.
Thanks,
Rune Johannessen Hello Dennis Crane,
More than four years ago (May 21 2010 here in Dr. Explain's user comments section at BitsDuJour), I asked about a Norwegian dictionary for Dr. Explain's spellchecker. You said:
[...] you could send us a plain list of Norwegian words (simple dictionary) then we could compile a dictionary in Polar Spellchecker format for you [...]
At that time I wasn't able to find a Norwegian wordlist, but today I have one. Do you still stand by your words?
By logic, I think that the rather limited numbers of languages Dr. Explain can spellcheck can be a limiting factor for the number of licenses sold. I am going to buy v5, but I have really been in doubt because of the limited number of dictionaries.
Regards,
Rune Johannessen
Rick Hello,
I am looking at this deal but a number of important details are missing from “the fine print” tab. If someone could answer some or all of the following questions, it would be appreciated.
1. Can the license be transferred to another owned computer?
2. Is activation required?
3. If applicable, how many activations per hardware thumb print are allowed?
4. Can the software be installed/activated on two computers (e.g., my desktop and laptop)?
Also, I do not want to assume that the special offer licensing terms are the same as full purchase price licensing terms, as this is not always the case.
Thank you…
Nov 15 2014 at 9:58am Copy Link
0
Dennis Crane @Fredrick:
The terms for the discounted license are the same: the same upgrade policy, the same EULA, the same support, etc. There are no special terms or conditions.
The license can be transferred to another YOUR computer and the activation is required.
The number of activations per certain period of time is limited. If you exceed the number of activations you may contact support and explain your case and we'll resolve the issue.
We allow to use on license on PC and laptop if they both are owned and used by the same person and there is no concurrent use of Dr.Explain.
Daniel Gaudet @Dennis
I purchased Dr.Explain Advanced License with 2 years Advance support. My purchased decision was partially based on the information in "The Fine Print".
In the fine print it mentions that it's licensed per user. It does not mention any restrictions on the number of systems. Usually when that's the case (at least on BitsDuJour), it means that you can install it on all owned systems (I will admit that in some cases it's a grey area and usually the vendor will make an exception an honour the multi-system/user in these cases).
Specifically in my case, I have 5 system (3 laptops and 2 desktops) where I am the sole user and I was planning on installing it on all 5 systems (not to be used at the same time). There could also be 5-10 more VMs that I use for demo and testing purposes that I was thinking of installing the software to make it easy to take screenshots from.
Would you be willing to have a discussion in the hopes of coming to an agreement that would be beneficial to both of us?
Nov 15 2014 at 5:43pm Copy Link
Dennis Crane @Daniel Gaudet:
User actually means PC/OS account user, not an actual owner. I'm afraid "all owned systems" is not the case. Sorry. We allow up to two installations at once maximum: e.g. laptop+PC. Technically, the activation system won't allow to activate single-user license so many times.
Does it support javascripts? (i.e. can I include some javascript on the html page and then it will be displayed on my online dr.explain pages?)
How about animated gifs?
Right! The ultimate license vs the advanced lincense difference is the collaboration feature
>Does it support javascripts?
Yes. You can insert HTML Code object into your topic content and paste there JavaScript code. It will be included in the final HTML output as is, without modifications. If you wish to use the same script in all topics then you can insert it into document header or footer in HTML Layout & Template settings.
> How about animated gifs?
All images are exported in PNG format. To insert AniGIF you can also use HTML Code object. However, I have to admit this is not very convenient.
Andrew Griffiths Product sounds fantastic.
A question and a point:
- Is the license transferable? For example, if I have one employee using the product and for some reason I want a different employee to use the software, can I transfer the license?
- From my perspective, it is a great shame that you have NO RETURN POLICY WHATSOEVER. I'm thinking of purchasing 4 copies which becomes a non-trivial financial risk @ $57 and even more for the advanced or ultima applications
Aug 26 2015 at 9:02am Copy Link
Dennis Crane @Andrew Griffiths:
- You can transfer license from time to time within company. Although the number of activations is limited per period, the limit is enough for non frequent transfer.
Thanks, Dennis, 15-day return will make a big difference. My comment was based on "No Return Policy" in the Fine Print tab on this page
Another question. If I "splurge" and buy (e.g.) 4 Ultima licenses and within 15 days decide we only need Regular, would you be amenable please to us downgrading from Ultima to Regular on the basis of today's BDJ price? To be specific would you refund us the difference in price between Ultima and Regular = $117 - $57 = $60 per license?
Thank you for your attention
On the basis of your assurances, David that:
1. You refund orders without conditions within 15 days of purchase
2. Licenses can be transferred
3. If we buy (for example) Ultima and later decide (within 15 days) that we only need a lesser version - ie Advanced or Basic
I have purchased 3 Ultima licenses and 1 Advanced license. I have also set up a Twira account
Looking forward to getting to know your product. Hope it works as well as I think it may do.
Best regards.
Cheers, Andrew
PS - I'd be MUCH MUCH happier with 30 days rather than 15! Although my tester tells me the software is easy to use what I'm concerned about and which is unclear as of now are the business use cases of the product.
Dippy Dawg A big “Thanks” to Dennis and his team for excellent support. I had a unique problem with registering Dr. Explain last year and Dennis replied to my email in less then 24 hours and resolved the issue to my satisfaction. Dr. Explain is a very robust software designed with a full complement of capabilities, yet easy to learn and you can produce detailed manuals in a few hours rather then days. Indigo Byte Systems listens to your requested improvements and incorporates many of them future updates. Dr. Explain is actively being develop/improved and you will see 2-3 maintenance/updates per year. You will not find a better software package and “A1” customer service at this price point or for that matter any cost. If you are on the fence about getting this….. I say “Pull the Trigger” and get it today at the very generous discount they are offering.
Charles Beauchamp Thanks for your response. Once your "deal" activates I will purchase an Advanced or Ultima License. If the Ultima license could be used economically with a 12+ Gig help file customized to interact with an EMR programmed in Delphi then there would be multiple Ultima licenses purchased for this multi-developer effort. This would then all be packaged to develop a manual that would facilitate the evaluation and management of all medical disorders though an intersection between the EMR, the Gruff Browser, dtsearch and an evolving help file for further customization by physicians in training & in practice. What is the cost per month for the use of 12+ Gigs of tiwri.com space?
Feb 3 2016 at 12:21pm Copy Link
Dennis Crane @Charles Beauchamp:
The Tiwri plans are based on the number of projects rather than on disk size.
Two projects are permitted on the free plan. More details: http://www.tiwri.com/plans
I'm not sure if it's effective to keep all the documentation in a single 12Gb file. There definitely will be problems with processing such huge file in Dr.Explain. I hope you can split it into several projects for more effective work.
Gary Mugford Installed the trial. Did enough to know that it is worth this price. BUT I'm a little confused about the feature grid. I want to produce a CHM help file and probably a PDF file. It looks to me like the standard version here won't export to PDF. It will to RTF, which I can then subsequently load into Word and print to a PDF. Have I made assumptions that are all correct?
Second question. I have a window with a LOT of controls on it. And the windows are pretty big. WHEN I get the activated version, I WILL be able to resize the top graphic and replicate it some number of times, in order not to overwhelm the user with pointers and descriptions. The concept I would have is to either crop the windows pictures, or to reduce the size so that it won't overwhelm the help screen. My users will normally have large monitors and a full-screen pic INSIDE of a CHM file will mean side-to-side scrolling, with vertical scrolling already a given. To me, that top window overall diagram needs to fit ... with labels, inside that CHM window. And it would be good if that was that automatic sizing.
Third question. I tried to add a window and that window was sitting on top of a file manager which was on top of an accounting program. Bad technique, but that's what tests are for. The Add Window produced the non-titlebar and non-Menu of the top window, no menu bar save for a blank sliver of a panel for the menu part and was titled with the name of the accounting program as the frame. That's not good. Now, I also understand, I should be doing this on a blank desktop, with only the program running and the Add Window box up in a corner. BUT, as I am sloppy sometimes, the need for this to be absolutely clean of other windows is noisome.
Fourth question: Will DrExplain import programming code and create a help file? The reality is that I would like to insert some of the windows INTO my own documentation for the code. It's Pascal from Delphi, in my case. I have a flow-chart program that produces BMPs that I could also include. Given the age of SOME of my code and the impending re-design of it, I think my future self would like his old code documented when other programs came up for re-design.
I have a help package. I do a fairly easy and quick screen section grab, paste, document process. Is it worth 80 bucks Canadian to get SOME of that screen grabbing done for me. especially when a LOT of controls went unpointed to (I assume as a byproduct of it being a trial and all), and might with the standard version? It's closer than you would think. I also would have gladly bought DrExplain ahead of the competitor had I been more diligent in my vetting at the time. But some of the above questions DO have to break my way for this to turn into a purchase decision.
Dennis Crane @Gary Mugford
1) For PDF, I'd recommend an Advanced license. The RTF-to-PDF path is not very convenient, really.
2) You can rearrange, remove, add controls and crop image even in the free mode. Just double click on an annotated screenshot to enter the designer mode to manage the annotation elements there.
3) I see. We plan to improve the capturing tool in future release. Now the captured window should not be overlapped by other objects.
4) I'm afraid I didn't clearly understand what you mean "import programming code and create a help file". The short answer is No, but I suppose that there are some peculiarities in your case.
Gary, you can always contact our support team at help@drexplain.com and we'll try to help you with your specific project.
Charles Beauchamp What is the cost per month for multiple individuals each using the Ultima version to work together on a 15 GB file?
Sep 21 2016 at 2:04am Copy Link
Dennis Crane @Charles Beauchamp
Collaboration of multiple users via tiwri.com platform on one or two files is free.
Tiwri plans are based on the number of projects per one account, not on number of collaborators: https://www.tiwri.com/plans
However, I have doubt about 15 Gb file. This will likely affect performance. Why the file is so large? Can it be split into several smaller projects?
disenchanted Dennis,
I wasn't trying to pitch another program.
[Note: within the youtube videos that played on the BDJ website under the Dr Expalin listing, [which showed Dr Explain's capabilities],
a video for "that other program" auto-played right after Dr Explain's video did].
I should have asked,
1. "what is the difference(s) between how Dr Explain "parses" for help information vs. how the other product obtains it's help info.
And,
2. does it really make much difference to the results of automatically adding documentation to a program's help file. By parsing vs. compiling?
Sorry if it appeared as pitching some other program.
I have been a Dr Explain user for a few years now and have a couple licenses of Dr Explain.
We plan to release 6.0 in a couple of months. The upgrade will be free for all 5.x users. It will include 64bit version of the app with new UI and some new features.
As for WordPress and other integration, we're designing an API to connect Dr.Explain to other systems. Likely, it will be useful with WP also.
@Wearsie Jackson:
Visitor-2014 Hello, I would like to ask two quite different questions:
1.1. Would you say that your software is suitable for creating not only help files or documentations etc. in the narrow sense but also a bilingual dictionary (with about 24.000 keywords at the moment)?
1.2. Would it be feasible to publish it afterwards on TiWri (not for collaboration but simply for reading)?
2. And my even more basic problem: I am still on Windows 10 32 bit. So at the moment unfortunately I cannot make use of your software in its current version.
Is there any time limit for activating the licence if I buy it? In other words: Could I buy the licence now with the discount and activate it only in, let's say, 10 or 12 months when I will possibly have a machine with 64 bit?
Or should I simply start to work with the latest version that supported 32 bit too (and which i had already tested a little) (= 5.4)? But I think to use an outdated version does not make much sense.
Thanks.
Pete User Can Dr. Explain be used to create documentation for: (a) websites? (b) PWAs "Progressive Web Apps"?
If "yes" for (a) and (b) will it automatically identify the controls (checkboxes, text fields, droplists, buttons...) and generate the numbered call-outs for each?
I want to use Dr. Explain for creating website and web-app (e.g. WordPress) documentation, but am doubtful that the full feature set of Dr. Explain will be available as seen in your video demos. Please provide detailed explanations and links to videos for documenting web based apps. Thanks.
Jul 8 2020 at 1:14pm Copy Link
Dennis Crane @Visitor-2014:
1.1. Yes, though it's not intended specifically for dictionaries. I'd suggest you to give it a try and evaluate if it meets your needs.(In your case you can start with version 5.4)
1.2 Yes. You can publish your web-version on a third level domain on tiwri.com platform.
2. Sure. You can activate the license any time you want. There are no limits or restrictions.
@Pete User: There is no difference in documenting windows apps or web pages. The workflow is just the same. Currently, we're working on version 6.1 and a better and more precise analysis of web pages on capturing is one of the upcoming improvements.
Thank you
Michael Rusakow This is a very nice and indispensable tool for building a help manual for software products, we use it to create and maintain help for WinCatalog for about 10 years now ( https://www.bitsdujour.co...alog-2021/ ).
The screenshot annotation tool is amazing, especially when dealing with changeable screenshots (after adjusting existing or adding new controls to the UI).
