Wiggle Hi, can i backup all documents (ebook and softwares) as i did with an external backup? I may need to format my laptop so i need a reliable backup where i can easily download and install everything like usual (i don't want to store half of my stuff on your website and half of it on an external hard disk. It would be great if i can keep it ALL on your website). Lifetime license sound great! Do we get Unlimited Cloud Backup Space too? Thanks.

Danny Sounds nice! But still have some questions: what is the Gigabyte or Terabyte is allowed, there is a limit?

On the Tab ' The Fine Print ' I read that there is a future upgrades versions of 50% must be paid. Then it sounds less beautiful than it first seems!

BurnWorld Hi Danny, in the fine print it says this : "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for current subscriptions. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted."

This is just a pre-written phrase that BitsDuJour has us select to add to the fine print.

But to clarify, with this offer you will never be required to pay for updated versions for this plan. This is truly a one time lifetime plan.

Also for those really digging into the terms, the phrasing used in the fine print says that "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for current subscriptions." So for anyone taking advantage of the offer will be considered with a current subscription, which then means that all upgrades to future versions will be free.

BurnWorld Hi Maz, yes you will get unlimited backup space to backup all the files you want. Just understand that 'cloud backup' is perfect for doing what you want to do. But the files must be restored 'somewhere' within 30 days after they are deleted from your hard drive. Either to your new laptop, a different external drive, an old hard drive, any other hard disk, etc... This is not the plan if you want long term storage. But we do offer Cloud Storage plans too which is referred to as our SYNC plan on the site, this would be ideal for long term storage because it's essentially a 'virtual' drive that you can access from anywhere. I just wanted to point that out since this is the #1 question we get about cloud backup. :)

Wiggle Thank you for your explanation, BurnWorld. Of course i will restored all the software since i need it. So, there is a limit to store stuff on your website? For example, i want to store ebooks on your website then i''ll have to restored it somewhere else within 30 days otherwise it will be deleted? May i know how much is the SYNC cost? Can i set some folders to be private and some shareable? Thanks. :)
Jun 16 2013 at 10:24am Copy Link

BurnWorld For the backup plan there is no limit for backup storage. So yes if you do a backup of your ebooks and then delete it from the computer it was on, you would need to restore it within 30 days somewhere.

The SYNC drives start at $59.99yr and offer 512GB of cloud storage. This this drive you can make any files shareable. The rest would be private.

Note that this is a separate product then what the offer is here for Unlimited Cloud Backup. The great thing with both products is that they go hand in hand or can be used separately depending on how you want to use the cloud.

Rick Truell Roger/Nico/BDJ Staff: You might want to check into this deal a little further before it goes live. In the promo copy, it says: "Check it out folks! At $59.99, you're getting a whopping 84% off of a 5-year license. But it gets better. BurnWorld is extending this to a LIFETIME LICENSE ...". Also, in the comments, BurnWorld told Maz "yes you will get unlimited backup space to backup all the files you want." and also told Tim John "Yes all 3 of your machines will be covered under this. And all future computers you get too.", which implies 'unlimited computers'.

First of all, BurnWorld doesn't have a '5-year license' for any of their plans; the 'Starter', 'Family' and 'Professional' plans are billed either monthly or annually, and all of the other plans have lifetime licenses. Not a good start.

Now, paying the 'Professional' annual rate of $74.99 for 5 years (note: not a 5-year license, but a 1-year license renewed 4 times) comes out to $374.95, for which $59.99 is indeed 84% off, and since those are the figures mentioned in the deal, presumably that's what it's supposedly for. Normally, however, with the 5th renewal, you'd have to start paying the full $74.99 per year for this plan...but BurnWorld has "extended this to a lifetime license". So, the deal is now for a lifetime license for unlimited backup space for unlimited computers...except that's the description of their 'Ultimate' plan, which normally costs $69.99; see about half-way down http://www.drivepop.com/billing/cart.php So, in reality, this upcoming deal is *actually* for their 'Ultimate' plan with a $10.00 (14.29%) savings...not exactly the 84% savings advertised.

Lastly, the promo copy says "... exclusively for BitsDuJour customers purchasing today. This option isn't even available on the DrivePop website!". Since the option *is* on their website and thus available for anyone, it obviously *isn't* exclusively for BDJ customers.

Lots of misleading info in this deal.

Don Wilcox Please note: If your backup plan is to do a mirror image backup of your entire system drive, including data, for someone with a lot of music, videos and ebooks this could easily equal or exceed 50 GB (gigabytes). This is equal to 400Gb (gigabits). At a typical 5Mbps (5 megabits per second) upload speed you would need to spend over 22 hours every 30 days uploading a new mirror image.

Also, files uploaded are deleted after 30 days. So if you discover you lost a file and it was lost over 30 days ago you have truly lost the file.

Google "foolproof backup strategy" for tips on creating a foolproof backup strategy. Unless you have a very high upload speed from your ISP a DrivePop backup will best be used as a second or third location backup copy of data files for sharing or for day to day recovery use to avoid digging out your primary backup from its offsite location.

Don Wilcox There are than a few people that use a mirror image program (True Image for example) to do their backups. And not all them will be aware of the very long time it would take to save such a back up to any online file storage system, not just DrivePop.

Don Wilcox Glad to be of service. Check with your ISP to see what your upload speed is. Some providers are now providing much faster upload and download speeds.

For those that don't know the difference:

1 gigabyte = 8 gigabits = 8000 megabits

An uppercase B, as in GB, MB and KB represents bytes.
A lowercase b, as in Gb, Mb, Kb represents bits.
A Byte = 8 bits
mbps is megabits per second
MB/s is megabytes per second.

Do the math to determine your upload time and remember that actual upload time will always be slower than the calculated time. Especially when it is comprised of multiple files instead of a single file.

Jun 17 2013 at 2:10pm Copy Link

BurnWorld @Rick Truell To help clear up some of the 'misleading' let me help clarify a bit. The pricing you found the other day was intended to be hidden, as they are not everyday products that we currently offer. This was an oversight on our part. As for this offer it is Unlimited backup for Unlimited computers.

Our current billing is set to signup for monthly or annual but you can sign up for any number of years that you want. So 5 years would be $374.95. In trying to determine what the best pricing would be for our deal here at BDJ, we chose 5 years for the price. But in actuality the savings could be much higher if you choose to actually use the service for life. I can see how you can think this could be misleading as it's hard to determine an actual value (since it will be different based on usage and user), but at the end of the day this is only $60 for a lifetime of backup service. And also with our product offering snafu on the site.

I'm happy to clear up any other questions or concerns you may have.
BurnWorld Inc. - Jun 17 2013 at 2:20pm Copy Link

BurnWorld @Danny if you change subdomains after you have done a backup, then you would need to do a full backup again from your backup client. But because the login will be the same for your new subdomain, the software will see that you have nothing backed up in your account and start a new backup process.

But to keep things tidy, just pick the subdomain you want to use from the start, and you won't have to worry about this. :)

Richard Andersen As I understand it, files deleted from your computer will be deleted on the online backup after 30 days. I assume that means that as long as you have a file on your computer, it will also remain in the online backup?

Or in other words, the online backup will mirror the files on your computer you have selected to backup, deleting any file you delete on your computer with a 30 day delay?
Jun 18 2013 at 6:17am Copy Link
0
Don Wilcox The way I read the website information is that every file stored in your DrivePop account will be deleted every 30 days. That means you must do a full backup no less than every 29 days to insure everything on your computer is backed up. Once you have deleted a file from your computer you will have 30 days from the last time the file was backed up to recover it from that backup. If you want to keep a specific backup more than 30 days you need to save it on a local drive or transfer it to a DrivePop account (or a different service) that offers perpetual storage.
Jun 18 2013 at 6:56am Copy Link
0
BurnWorld @Richard Andersen @Don Wilcox
This is correct. This is a cloud backup service that mirrors the files you want to make a backup of. It's basically digital insurance. When it's determined that a file has been deleted, our servers will keep that file for 30 days in case you need to retrieve it. The servers won't automatically delete every file every 30 days. It just does a check to see if anything has changed on the client side, and if so makes the same 'mirror' of the files you have chosen to backup.

And if long term cloud storage is necessary (over 30 days), this would be an additional service called SYNC which is also listed on the site.

Our offer here is for our Cloud Backup. Feel free to ask me additional questions about the service.

Richard Andersen OK, thanks. So with "long term cloud storage" any file you have uploaded will remain on the backup server indefinitely (as long as you have an account) whether you delete it from your computer or not?

BurnWorld @Richard Andersen
That's correct. The SYNC drive is essentially a virtual drive and can be used for long term file storage. You can also easily share content in this drive with anyone you choose.

Brent Burdick A) Just to clarify this 30 days business per questions by Don and Danny, I think it is important to point out the following:

1) The backup software must remain installed on the computer being backed up so it can monitor for the presence of the file or its deletion. If files are not confirmed as present by the installed software within a 30 day span, they will be gone.

2) The backup software must be operational and it must connect with the service at least once every 30 days even if nothing new is backed up. This could be important if the computer is not used for extended periods, if the user will be absent for extended periods of time (i.e. month long sabbatical, maternity leave, etc.) or if occasional manual backups are preferred over automatic (example: I would turn off automatic in the case of large backup sets on a laptop with high priced bandwidth while traveling).

B) As to the storage limit. There is a 5TB limit for external drives considered by the PC to be a local drive (like an attached USB, Firewire or eSATA device).

C) As to the server location. Currently, the servers are located only in London, UK. Testing of bandwidth from your provider should be done.

D) The service is intended to backup "data files" only. Some file types are excluded (like virtual machine images) and others, like True Image backups can be, but are not technically allowed.

Eddie Tex A lot of you folks are asking questions that would be answered just by reading this discussion thread. The deal is for the backup service, not sync (more like Mozy than Dropbox) and it covers all of your computers (not just one).

There are also no guarantees that any online service, vendor, or even brick-and-mortar business will remain in business for any length of time. That's the risk you take.

The lifetime offer is not made available on their website and the cost for this lifetime offer is roughly equal to paying monthly for a year for their individual backup plan.

What assurances can you give that you won't be just another Livedrive reseller gone bust? It especially concerns me because of your high prices (albeit "lifetime" licenses).

Good luck DrivePop!

Mark Johnson I share the concern of Mike Shanahan.
My data is very valuable to me, so I do a lot of research into any company that is going to be keeping a copy of my data that I might need to access months or years in the future.

It appears that DrivePop and the owning company 'Burnworld Inc.' did not exist before a handful of months ago. I also see that the address of the company is a condominium in a residential area, so that's another thing that makes me very cautious.

Unfortunately, the low price and 'lifetime' upgrade actually make me even more wary.
Is there something you can provide to make me feel more confident that the data I put into DrivePop will still be there in 1 years, 5 years, etc.?

Thanks,
Mark.

J L I'm thinking of buying but I have a few concerns. What if I'm 30 days without using a computer? Will everything have been erased when I come back ? Lots of information means lots of internet use. I would have to use temporarily a much higher speed than the plan I currently have. Hence an additionnal cost. And if everything is erased on your side I would have to consider resending everything.

This kind of decreases my interest. Permanent storage would probably more interesting for me with the opportunity of controling at a distance. What kind of investment would that represent with you people ? Do you plan to have such a lifetime unlimited offer for such a product.

BurnWorld @Robert Reese
Military grade, AES-256 security is used to encrypt all communications between a user’s computer and the servers, data stored on your computers is backed up on to multiple storage servers at the data centres ensuring your data is fully protected.

The network is protected by enterprise-grade firewalls ensuring that once your data is on the servers only the people you want to access your data can.

Files stored on the server are encrypted, so in the very unlikely event that someone compromised the data storage and stole any data it would be meaningless.

This storage encryption is done by a web service on receipt of the file, rather than by the Client Software on your PC. If this encryption was done by the client then we wouldn’t be able to let you download the unencrypted files directly from the web portal – you could only use the software.

The encryption used between the client Software and the servers is a separate process – more similar to the SSL connection you use when sending data to and from your online bank.

Files are decrypted before transmission to you – it is up to you how you wish to download files, and whether to use an encrypted method to do so.

Eddie Tex @Mark_Johnson et al,

As a fellow potential user, you're asking for some sort of guarantee that a company will remain in business, but in the business world, no such guarantee exists for ANY startup. Of course, all startups believe they will last (otherwise, why even try).

If DrivePop had been established several years ago and proven to be one of the best and most reliable cloud backup solutions, this offer would not exist. In other words, the only reason we have this offer is because they are a start-up looking to obtain an immediate user base who will help advertise their product "word-of-mouth" if we like the service.

This is a risk-reward scenario that each of us have to evaluate. Your potential loss is $60, which is equivalent to one year of backup service. Your potential gain is a lifetime of cloud backup service.

Asking for some sort of guarantee is fruitless.

BurnWorld @Mike Shanahan @Mark Johnson

All fair concerns and questions.
It's true that other similar services have come and gone. BurnWorld's interest is because we are already in the 'storage' space with our info and review sites and DVD/Blu-Ray software line. It only seems natural to offer a fair and reasonable cloud service. We have established funding that will ensure that we stick around for the long haul. Actually BurnWorld has been around since 2002 and like I mentioned, we have been in the 'storage' and 'optical disc' industry for the entire time. Our address is not a condo, this is actually an office building. As for the low price/offer here. It's just a way to get initial interest in our offering and to give the early adopters a great value. I think that's fair isn't it?

Daniel Gaudet I have a question regarding restoring the data. If my pc's boot drive fails and I have to re-install windows, how to I get access the my data without having to download every file using a web browser? There isn't much information on the DrivePop site regarding that scenario.

Also, is it possible to have two PC's share the same backup data?

Thanks!

Brent Burdick One nice thing about using a Livedrive reseller is that they can offer very competitive plans that benefit certain types of users. In this case, it seems that DrivePop's optimal market is for heavy users a) with lots of computers and/or b) who use lots of space. Livedrive does not offer a similar plan with unlimited computers and unlimited space, unless you went with their reseller plan starting at $59.95 per MONTH. At 59.99 for 5+ years, this is a good aggregation model where they buy the big plan and divide it into smaller pieces for users. If you have 1 computer and low space requirements, you may be able to find a more competitive plan with someone else.

While it would be nice if DrivePop provided more technical details up front, it seems reasonable to assume that they will provide relatively good support and service based on a few factors: 1) They didn't try to hide the underlying vendor, 2) they have been around for many years with other products, 3) they have multiple employees and a real location, 4) they actually provided a real address when many online software providers only provide a contact form or email address and 5) they have actively answered many questions on here showing that their support may be responsive and efficient.

It would be impossible to know if DrivePop or even Livedrive will be around after many years, but the risk doesn't seem that high compared to any other vendor. I used Lenovo's Online Backup (Mozy reseller) for a while before they shut it down without any alternative option, so size doesn't really matter.

Simon Leith What a great deal. How can you let this pass. Just take the risk.

I have been using live drive for a while, you can easily restore single files from the web browser control panel, or you just download the restore program to restore everything. As long as your backup data remains on the laptop/workstation this will stay backed up in the cloud unless you delete it from the computer it will stay in the cloud for 30 days, then it will delete.

PC world use live drive, that was good enough for me.

In regards to your answer @Stephen Stimac on backing up "mapped drives". It doesn't look like your plan covers NAS devices. Would you please clarify?

Stephen Stimac I have a NAS box with RAID-1 configuration that I have mapped to my desktop computer as DRIVE-T. The capacity of the drive is 6TB. Can I mirror my DRIVE-T (6TB NAS box) to your cloud? I know I have another issue and that is the pipe to your cloud. I have Comcast as my service and they had a 650GB/month data limit. Comcast has suspended the limit, but in the future will base their internet charges on speed and data usage. The cost for a 6TB data upload would be prohibitive. NOTE: I know it would take a long time to mirror 6TB, even with a fast pipe.

Does the DrivePop client software allow one to specify a location to be backed up by UNC (network path) or does the software require that drives be mapped on the PC before they can be added to the backup?

Thank you.

Excellent write-up on the encryption. Thank you.

The only concern I have is that you control the decryption keys, which means you are able to access the decrypted files.

Not a deal-breaker, though, since it's easy enough to encrypt files. In this situation, where security is a prime concern, I think your SYNC service would suit that better.

On the whole, it does sound more secure than many competitors.

Best wishes,

Just fixed up your account. We're going through all the signups and somehow missed changing your product listing in our system.

Just a note to others on this signup process: we feel this is the best way to provide the signup because this offer is not listed on our site and it's not a product to sign up for. Otherwise you would have to pay for another service to get an account. So we manually need to update each account which could take a few hours to get to. But no fear because the service/software is available as soon as you sign up, and you can use it straight away.

The drives need to be mapped by the PC. In the case of a Network drive (this answers a few other questions above too) you would need to purchase a NAS Drive add-on as NAS drives are not supported in this unlimited backup plan. Also with NAS there is a 5TB limit.

Pim Joosten My apologies if this questions has been asked before. I would like to know if the backup does in file delta back-ups or always backups the entire file if something has changed. This would be important for pst files a.o.

Also, what do you mean with purchase a NAS Drive add-on? Isn't it simply enough to map a NAS volume as a drive in Windows? Why would I purchase something for that? (or maybe I am just confused...)

BurnWorld @Doug Leitz and Iam Dman

There are no throttling limitations.

@Pim Joosten
This will not do a delta backup. The best it will do is keep 30 versions of a changed file but it will backup the entire file.

As for a NAS drive, yes you would need to map it as a drive in Windows and it would be seen as a NAS device from the client software which we have to price separately. If the drive is physically attached to a computer then it can be backed up with this plan. If not then it would need to be a NAS add-on.

Eddie Tex @ Danny,

This service is NOT equivalent to Dropbox. Dropbox synchronizes files between systems. What this service does is make a back-up of your files onto the internet. It is not meant to synchronize your data between multiple systems (you would need to purchase a separate service from them called "SYNC" to do that).

Additionally, it backs up whatever data you want it to back up on your PC. You tell it what folders and files to back-up. It does not need to back up your entire system.

Mark Johnson @Eddie Tex -- nothing I asked was unreasonable or unexpected from any person concerned about their money or their much, much more valuable data and time. You speak of 'guarantees' but nowhere did I ask for a guarantee but instead just more information to make my data feel more secure to me. If I invest in an online backup service and that service one day disappears along with my data, then much more is potentially lost than the money invested.

If the loss was only the money, then the investment is not worthwhile in the first place no matter how secure the company. Your response makes it sound like the money is the only concern whereas it is the most inconsequential concern of all.

Ota C I've just finished reading the upper third of existing BDJ comments (until Monday 2:01pm) and I feel obliged to pass my thanks to Rick ... and to BurnWorld. To Rick for asking the right questions and to BurnWorld for only approaching several fragments of his very specific doubts, asking him to email them to get detailed answers instead of grabbing his/my attention and actually eliminating his doubts by composing smarter answers. For all of us to see.

BurnWorld, thank you very much for making it so easy for some(/many) of us to not choose your deal.

I'll pass.

The deal/provider/pricing/Ts&Cs are far from transparent for my liking. Honestly, I won't even bother reading the lower two thirds of those semi-mysterious answers. Mainly because the first impression usually corresponds with the truth ... and the BurnWorld's Sunday 10:23am answer is as vague as it can get. Full of empty phrases and fact-less exaggerations. Like I said, thank you one-man-like team of BurnWorld. To use your childish terminology, I'm 99.99999% positive your company won't last those five years.

IMHO, people who do buy the lifetime license are hoping for their lifetime but will only get BurnWorld's lifetime. I might be wrong, people. However, try your best not to burn yourselves with BurnWorld. Like I said, it's the first impression that counts. Are you 99.99999% happy with what you read above? Would all these questions appear if the deal was trouble-free? Have a look and decide if your $60 is an investment or simply a lottery ticket.

You're right. You did not use the word "guarantee" and maybe I'm putting words in your mouth, but your question ("Is there something you can provide to make me feel more confident that the data I put into DrivePop will still be there in 1 years, 5 years, etc.?") just sounds like you're asking for some sort of assurance that this company will stand the test of time.

Now I certainly understand any question regarding data security (i.e. that the data protected from data leakage; is it encrypted; does it support multi-factor authentication, etc.). As I'm trying to evaluate this company, I would want to know the some of those things myself. Additionally... how stable is the service? Will this time-out on me everytime I try to upload a file of a certain size? How well does it perform?

On the other hand, while I'd like to know that this company will still exist in 1 to 5 years, there really is no answer they could give me that would change the fact that they are a startup, subject to the same risks that all startups face. In that regard, even if they give an answer that makes you or someone else feel good, I'd still want everyone to understand that the risk doesn't change.

Mark Johnson @Eddie Tex:
Quoting:
"Your potential loss is $60, which is equivalent to one year of backup service. Your potential gain is a lifetime of cloud backup service. "

Correcting:
"The potential loss is the permanent loss of your data and its entire version history to restore from, and the possible misuse of that data. Your potential gain is cloud backup service for the lifetime of the DrivePop service."

Previous questions about the company from others were met with vague responses like "99.9999% sure that we'll be around for the long haul. By partnering with the right vendors, we have made sure that our service is secure, reliable, and will be around for a long long time." I was hoping for an elaboration on which vendors the company is partnered with or something substantial like that which would help provide some confidence. Instead I got a response that made it sound like selling DVD burning software was practically the same as running an 'unlimited' cloud backup service, but in fact they are not related at all.

To me the final nail in the coffin for any chance I would purchase this service was when research brought me to burnworld.com, which is owned by the same folks that own DrivePop and FilePop. If you take a look at that website, it gives the appearance of being a non-biased review website, and even makes that claim. However, oddly enough the very highest reviews are for their own products even though there's no mention I could find on the website that burnworld.com is owned by the same people who sell their most highly-rated products. Interesting is this page: http://www.burnworld.com/about.htm , featuring Rob Boiruin, who also owns FilePop.com, DrivePop.com, and several other domains.

Thanks for the offer and hopefully my impression from questions asked here and research done will be proven wrong in the years to come.

b. Can your Windows software co-exist with other backup programs I use? Specifically, I have ShadowProtect and Paragon DiskManager on my Windows 8 Pro machine. Are there any conflicts, or problems having multiple backup software used concurrently?

c. What versions of Windows does your client software support? Please indicate for each:
. Windows 8
. Windows 7
. Windows XP
. Windows 2000 Pro

Brent Burdick @Ralph

Three areas to look at:

1) Livedrive often presents only a "selected list" of folders, including ones that it believes contain files most likely to be backed up. It also does it because it doesn't want you to select all the folders or an entire drive, as this is not how the service is designed.

I don' t know exactly what features DrivePop has enabled, but try one of these two things (but first I am going to assume you are using Windows):
a) Right click on the folder you want to backup in Windows Explorer and see if it gives you a "Livedrive" option. If it does, select "Backup with Livedrive Backup".
b) Within the desktop software make sure you are using the links to "Manage Backups" or "Manage Backup settings". Don't use "Select Folders" or other start up wizards.

2) Livedrive will NOT backup all files on a computer. It specifically blocks certain folder names and file types. Compare the folder names to others and see if there is a similarity in the ones not showing. Perhaps try renaming the folder. If all the files in the folder are of one type, make sure this type of file is not blocked. This version of Livedrive will NOT backup files on a network share. Are these folders active shares? If yes, make sure you are not referencing them by their share path, which sometimes happens even if they are local. Are the folders compressed by Windows? If yes, turn it off.

3) If the program crashed or was otherwise closed during initialization, the folder structure may be corrupted. Run the Livedrive Integrity Check.

BurnWorld @Petr Yes this will backup USB drives, there is a 5TB limit though on external drives. If it's powered on once or twice a week that will be find after the initial backup.

This plan is not meant to act as a full system backup as there other better disk imaging software available for that purpose. This is mainly an easy way to make a mirror backup of files you don't want to lose and if so, and easy way to restore them. So basically digital insurance. It's a very similar service to BackBlaze.

Yes the software can co-exist with other backup programs. From everything I have looked at and tested along side our client, I have not run into any compatibility issues.

It is supported on all the versions of Windows you listed.

@Mark Johnson

Brent Burdick @Ali

USB flash drives are considered removable or portable media and can not be backed up using DrivePop Online Backup or Livedrive Backup.

Some people I know do the following based on disk-to-disk-to-online backup strategy: Get a supersize and low cost USB hard drive. Use a synchronizer program to sync files from USB flash drive and/or shared network device. This serves a fast local backup of those files. Run online backup program against USB hard drive. Benefits: Can use cheap or relatively slow drive as the backup speed to online is very limited, so no need for fast throughput. Your data itself is backed up once quickly and can be restored locally quickly versus just the online. You can still use the portable flash drive as intended. Backup software does not impact live production files on network drive. Both network drives and flash drives would not be required to be connected all the time per the limitations of this particular backup strategy/service (files must be present). You get the benefits from online backup versioning and offsite backup.

Eddie Tex @Mark Johnson,

Yes. If you need your backup at the same time the company goes dark, then you would lose your data (that's also assuming this service was your only backup option).

Your additional points, however, raise a different concern, which is the actual legitimacy of the operation (which I would agree is a valid concern). That is still a different matter than asking for assurance that your data will still be there 1 - 5 years from now. I guess I don't understand what kind of answer you're expecting to get that will give you that confidence.

Even if this company were partnering with Microsoft, Google, and Salesforce, you couldn't guarantee that the company and your data would sustain that length of time.

Pim Joosten @ Kelly: In one of the posts BurnWorld explains that they have to process each order manually, because the lifetime deal is only offered on BDJ for these couple of days and not elsewhere. Since they are in the USA it is safe to assume that they were sleeping when you ordered. I think you have to wait until the day really starts in the US. That is what I think...

Also, what do you mean with "2 business days"? In the earlier post you said you ordered 6 hours before posting.

@BurnWorld: Do you have any idea when the NAS add-on will be available for purchase and, more importantly, what the price will be (approximately)? I think this is important information for quite a few contributors here. For me, I want to consider the price of this offer with an estimation of the add-on, because that is the total package I probably want to go for. Please note that I do not expect a definitive price, an estimation would be enough. I can understand if you still have to determine the specifics for the add-on, but I would like to have a general idea before going ahead with this deal.

Again, thanks in advance for your response.

Mike B @Kelly Major:

It is a bit convoluted what to do after purchasing. Here's what I found:

Log in to the client area for the trial account that you set up during the purchase. In the DrivePop client panel, select "Services/My Services". That will show the Product/Service(s) that you have. At some time after the purchase they will convert the trial account to a "DrivePop Plans - Professional Plan - Lifetime License (BitsDuJour)" account type. (I'm not sure how long this took for me, but I think it was less than an hour. It might take longer; I imagine they're pretty busy, and I don't know what time it is wherever they're situated).

Click the "View details" button for the account. Then click the "Login to control panel" button that's in the middle of that screenful of information. That will open the "Livedrive" control panel. On this page you'll be able to download the backup client software.

Ralph Bressler @Kelly - Yes as was explained in the posts, you must set up a trial account on the site. This will be converted manually to the full license. You may download the client program from your login URL which would be accountname.liverdrive.com.

Kelly Major Ralph,

I don't have time to read all the posts, is there anything else I need to know? Why not send an email explaining the procedure? Ridiculous.

I'll go set it up now. I assume it has to use the PayPal email used to purchase? I hate buying with PP when the vendor only uses the simple interface since the user has no ability to supply registration information. I don't want my PP email to be used for product registrations.

Going to set up a trial account.

Thanks! - Kelly

TopDog Sorry to hear some people having trouble with the setup. Remember it takes a few minutes because this is a special deal and they are doing it manually. The emails I received told me I would have to set up a free trial account first and it would then be converted. Considering the deal I got, I didn't mind waiting a few minutes to get this account all set and started.

JMJ Squared @Kelly Major - You do not have to use the same credentials from your PayPal account; you can use another email, as I did five weeks ago. My initial experiences with their Support, initially provided by Rob Boirun and later by Roger McAllister concerning repeated billing errors, was very good. However, as an EXISTING customer in the SAME Time Zone as DrivePop, I have been waiting 3 days for a reply to a simple question asked 2 days PRIOR which was partially answered then.

I have their Professional Package which is supposed to include a SYNCDrive (called a Briefcase) that I simply cannot get installed on my system. I am more than a little computer proficient. I have made repeated requests for assistance and have gotten NO RESPONSE AT ALL. LiveDrive, itself, will not provide any support to customers who purchased through a re-seller, like DrivePop, who has no support portal of its own, nor any FAQ Page, Forum, etc.

The so-called Backup is nearly useless to me without the Sync Drive/Briefcase. The thirty-day retention limit makes the "Backup" no more than a giant temp-folder, IMO.

@Brent Burdick @Stephen Stimac, et al : In order to backup your NAS devices, you have to go for their Professional Package.

Some of the delay and confusion I've experienced and that many here seem to be suffering as well, is, I sincerely hope, only DrivePop's temporary birthing pains. I believe their principals are capable, honest folk who, not being in complete control of their Product by dint of only being re-sellers, will get their ducks in a row.

My suggestion to DrivePop is to allow those who sign up for a two-week Trial via BitsDuJour during this promotion be allowed to take advantage of the "Lifetime" offer before the end of that Trial. That way, although concerns of your long-term viability as cogently raised by Mark_Johnson and others may not be assuaged, at least, your potential Customers will be get firsthand answers to many of the questions and other concerns expressed here.

Finally, at your earliest opportunity, please pay me the courtesy of providing meaningful answers and assistance to my questions and support requests, most urgently including tested-and-confirmed steps to install your Briefcase on my Windows 7 64-bit system.

Danny What it comes down to: one must take a Sync service with this service is that there is no need to complete new backup each month. So without sync service is the cumbersome and time consuming work to backup up to date or keep existing ones. Or I see that wrong?

This is the second time I got it early, so far no response.

atariguy I'm currently using Crashplan. One of the things I like about it is that the client also does local backups for me, lessening the chance of actually having to go through the painful process of restoring from the "cloud" as well as giving me a local copy that doesn't expire if the original is deleted.

Does the Livedrive client have this feature?

Cary Adams I really want to like this deal... Even if I set aside all the talk about DrivePop's financial survivability, I just don't get the benefit of this system.

I get the basic premise that my files will be backed up in the cloud. But since it's a backup, I have to presume a need to restore after a minor/major local file loss. Here's where I get stuck...

One day I discover that my family photos have been corrupted, or worse deleted. But if my discovery occurs more than a month after the incident that rendered the files corrupt, I have no possibility of recovery. This is the scenario I dread most. Finding that critical files fell off the system unnoticed.

Or... in the event of an extreme disruption... for example a local hard drive failure, motherboard meltdown, or PC theft, I only have 30 days to take delivery of the replacement hardware, reinstall Windows, re-establish my service with DrivePop, and download all the files that were backed up from the original equipment. While I'll admit that's doable, everything has to fall in place, and still I'll be running the treadmill as the 30-day limit counts down. If my new drive fails its integrity testing, I'll be out another week with RMAs and reordering its replacement.

For this deal to work for me, I would want at least 180 day storage with continual versioning (not only daily as this seems to be) as a minimum. Maybe I'm missing the obvious application here, but I only see a marginally acceptable file restoration process.

@Petr... Maybe I've misunderstood your question, but you're not going to want to backup your Win OS files with DrivePop. You'll still need Paragon DM to image your OS partition. DrivePop won't do that.

Eddie Tex @Danny,

That's incorrect.

Sync service allows all your computers to remain "in sync" with one another. So if you have a bunch of files updated on one computer, it will automatically update to the internet and THEN to other computers that you own.

With a regular back-up service, there is no synchronization between computers. So if you have a bunch of files updated on one computer, those changes are made to the internet only. There is no synchronization to other computers.

Eddie Tex Danny,

You still do not understand the service.

These cloud storage providers provide software that is always running in the background of your computer and regularly looking for changes. You don't have to specifically run it. It automatically runs if your computer is turned on.

As for the 30 days limit, what that means is that they hold DELETED files for 30 days starting from the time a file is confirmed as deleted from your computer.

If you don't turn on your computer for 30 or 45 days, your data should still be there as long as you did not delete it from your computer.
Jun 20 2013 at 12:56pm Copy Link

JMJ Squared @Danny - I understand now and agree with you. I gladly would pay substantially more for a truly unlimited, "timeless" plan but that simply is not what is being offered here, especially not at these prices. Can you imagine the infrastructure DrivePop would need to store all of our data indefinitely? Only entities like Amazon and Google have that capacity.

Speaking of capacity: I don't see how LiveDrive can sustain this business model. For a very modest US$ 60.00 per month, they allow an unlimited number of resellers to offer an unlimited number of down-stream customers (like us) to store -- for however long-- an unlimited amount of data on their servers. Theoretically, we can store that unlimited amount of data indefinitely if we simply allow our online Backup to access corresponding files on our local devices every 30-days or less.

I think DrivePop will deliver on their warrants to us as long as LiveDrive delivers on its warrants to them. Frankly, especially at the prices being offered, I don't see how this is sustainable. Additionally, LiveDrive appears to have established a "firewall" between the end-user and itself; namely, the reseller. I surmise this by the fact that LiveDrive does not support its resellers by offering the resellers customers, at least, direct access to LiveDrive's support, FAQs, Forums, etc. Aside from costly direct support via email, chat or phone, I don't see why LiveDrive makes it difficult for DrivePop's customers to access online help. It appears that they take DrivePop's money and then say: Fend for yourself.

DrivePop made an offer that I couldn't refuse and, despite some hiccups, seems to be doing the right thing. I hope my "it seems too good to be true" caution proves one-hundred percent wrong. Anyway, if the worst happens, it will have cost me only a cup-of-coffee per month.

@Brent Burdick - Thanks a lot for the suggestion re Java but, as you can imagine, I already had the 32-bit browser plug-in as most sites and extensions cannot handle 64-bit Internet Explorer. However, I followed your "hint" and installed Java 64-bit as well. No joy! Still cannot get the Briefcase to install on my system after uninstalls, re-installs, careful examination of the Registry, etc.
Mine is a straightforward Windows installation; i.e., no TruCrypts, VMs, partitioning, or the like.

Good news is that Rob Boirun at DrivePop has contacted me with the beginnings of assistance. So, sooner-or-later, I'll get this sorted and detail the steps here, in case anyone else experiences this... adventure. :)

Thanks again.

Brent Burdick @Eddie Tex et al

Unfortunately, there are many different opinions and interpretations as to how exactly the 30 day countdown operates. Even a Livedrive tech has said something similar to what you did "If you don't turn on your computer for 30 or 45 days, your data should still be there as long as you did not delete it from your computer." but that was in 2012. It is not clear and even you say "should still be there". I think only DrivePop can get that answer from Livedrive and they should ask for it. Livedrive is the one not being clear.

In the mean time, there is one clear answer that I think can not be overlooked and it is in Livedrive's Terms of Service as in force today:

"You must at all times run the Livedrive software on any computer that is being backed up and you must ensure this computer connects to the Internet at least once every 30 days. Livedrive will remove backups for computers that have not connected to the service for 30 days."

What they really do may be different, but this statement is so clear and specific that it can't be a mistake and as long as it remains in their TOS I wouldn't risk it.

Thanks for the clarification. I was going off of the "best practice" model for such cloud storage providers... but If that indeed is their stance (and I agree it's worded very clearly), then this would be an unfortunate restriction.

Sorry to ruin your moment of bliss! If it makes you feel better, even with everything being said, I did buy this deal. It think it has the potential to be a very good value, but I wouldn't use it as a sole and primary backup method for my most important files.

It seems like a good option for secondary files or as an additional offsite backup "insurance" destination. In addition, I have a lot of the same files on multiple computers and the de-dupe technology used in it may help me out. I also wanted to test it more and its not super expensive especially since it doesn't have ongoing monthly fees. There is no guarantee that a provider with monthly fees will have any greater longevity.

Mike Shanahan I just wanted to see this work right. After messing around with it, reading the website, etc., there's just too many known unknowns, not to mention the unknown unknowns. You still have dead links on the site and many misspellings, that doesn't exactly give me a lot of faith in a reseller like yourselves.

It's sad that Livedrive themselves had to scold you (only two months ago) via your Twitter account for the dead links and such.

Arlene Manduca I want to buy this, I need to know.
1) Are files when on your servers in a backup or compressed format?
Or are they in the oiginal format - essentially mirrored on DrivePop?
Answer: A) compressed B) just like the original file format and location.

2) To clarify question 1 can I use or share them as they are, as you would on FTP or must the files be downloaded to restore any corrupted files or for them to be used?
A) files must be downloaded and be restored
B) You can find, use and share your files just as they are.

3) Do I have to purchase an add on the "Sync" feature so keep the back up matching my computer? A) Yes B) No, it's included.

4) How do I back up data on a USB WD hardrive attached to my router? The DrivePop license is for a computer.

5) What, where is the NAS add on?

Thank you very much for your answers. Sems like an excellent deal for people willing to take a chance on a new contender. I found only one review of your service. Would you extend this deal another day as they're so many unanswered questions? This group is full of users with more complex needs. Diagrams of common complex configurations would create more comfort and trust. $60 is small for a good, workable back up solution. $60 is too much for a service that can't meet a network's need or deletes your files if you don't log in every 30 days.

With the plan that is being offered here today. These are the answers to your questions.

1) B
2) A - can also be download to your other computers that you have on your account. Plus you can stream audio/video from your cloud portal account.
3) The SYNC feature is separate but this is a 'virtual' hard drive that can be used for long term storage and also to share your files with whomever you want.
4) & 5) This would be a NAS add-on which is also additional. We currently offer these for $80yr.

Let me know if you have further questions.

JMJ Squared Briefcase (SyncDrive) problem solved. :)

The program's installer, *Livedrive-Setup.exe*, installs components *ControlPanel.exe* and *Livedrive.exe* to run with highest privileges by default. This conflicts with User Account Control (UAC) on Windows 7 , Vista and, probably, Windows 8.

If you encounter "Open Briefcase in Explorer" errors as I posted above, please:

1. Exit DrivePop (Livedrive) ;
2. Navigate to Livedrive's installation directory and,
3. Right-click both of these files in turn: ControlPanel.exe and Livedrive.exe ;
4. Click PROPERTIES and then the COMPATIBILITY tab.
5. Near the bottom, below PRIVILEGE LEVEL , UNcheck the box "Run this program as an administrator".
6. Click APPLY and then,
7. Click OK.

Reboot should not be necessary but can't hurt.

Re-start Livedrive.

Mike B FWIW, here's my plan for using this service:

1) backup locally to a low end Windows machine with a large amount of storage. This machine will be more or less dedicated to storage (kind of a NAS, but running Windows). Some junk machine cobbled together from bits I have lying around (except for new drives) should do the trick here.

2) this machine will be backed up to DrivePop - since it will be more or less continuously running, the 30 day file-check requirement won't be a problem.

So I have my local backup for speed and comprehensiveness, and a cloud backup that will let me get to files offsite if I want to do that as well as being the last line of defense in case of a really bad event (like a burglary or fire at home).

If I can get that cloud final line of backup with just a $60 one time investment, I'll be thrilled.

Cary Adams A 30 day buffer is just not worth this good price. It is useless to me, and I suspect many here will come to that realization when they have a real need to restore lost/corrupted files (many of which won't be noticed until long after the original files have flushed) and find themselves with terabytes of useless redundant storage on hand.

And with no client-side encryption, you might as well not bother with "encryption" at all when your provider's key security isn't well understood... After all what IS secure on the web nowadays. For those who point to Boxcryptor, well, that technology still leaves a lot to be desired today, particularly in a file restoration mode... and it's quite pricey... more costly than this offer, and all it does is provide on-the-fly-encryption.

For small scale backup, consider Tresorit. For large-scale, Amazon Glacier. Without sync thrown in along with client-side encryption, I pass this offer.

Richard Andersen I'm not impressed with the upload speed - currently it's 115 kBit/s and I haven't seen it go over 700 kBit/s yet. My line can handle 1.7 mBit.

Like someone else here I alwo wonder how LiveDrive can make that business model work. A reseller can sell an unlimited number of accounts paying less than $1000/year to LiveDrive. That means that if you sell say 1000 accounts, LiveDrive gets $1/year per account. That hardly covers the price of 100 GB diskspace, and diskspace is only a small part of the expenses.

Gene Yonke Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think we've got a problem here. When DrivePop listed its offering on the Bitsdujour site I, and I believe most of us felt that the offer was a special offering to visitors of the Bitsdujour site. I was one of the visitors who, in good faith, purchased the Drivepop subscription thinking that I was getting a pretty good deal----no, thinking that I was getting a REALLY GOOD DEAL--a lifetime of unlimited cloud backup for just $59.99--WOW! How can you pass up a deal like this, I told myself, so I didn't.

Today however, while visiting the Drivepop site I came across the following special offer--Take a look

http://www.drivepop.com/d...pop-promo/

It appears as though the very same product that was offered as a special on the Bitsdujour site is now being offered to the general public for only $49.99. Now, like I said, maybe I'm mistaken and if so I'd like someone to point out my mistake to me, but right now, I feel as though we've all been deceived. I've been visiting the Bitsdujour site for quite a long time, but if what I'm seeing is in fact correct, this may be the end of our relationship.

Gene Yonke @ Scott Kettman. just for credibility's sake, I DO have a .png screen capture of the offering that I would be happy share with you but am not sure how to do that.

Also, as Rob @BurnWorld indicated, he did in fact, contact me via email and has stated that the offer I found on line today was not the same offer as the one offered on the Bitsdujour site, however, to be honest with you, I still can't see any difference in the offers. I'll look once again.........

short time later.....

I still have the offer page open on my computer (as well as the png screen capture saved to my computer). Looking at it again I DO see a difference. It's a subtle difference that's easily overlooked. Let me briefly (as possible) explain the difference between the two offers, as I understand them.

In the Bitsdujour offer, the offer is an "Unlimited" offer, unlimited in this case, meaning that the program can be associated with more than one computer. Perhaps it's listed elsewhere, but I found this information by reading the comments. The very first person to comment was made by 'Tim John' who asked if the Bitsdujour license would apply to all 3 of his computers.
BurnWorld responded in the 6th comment that, yes, all three of Tim John's computers could be used with this license.

In looking at the DrivePop.com site that I happened on this morning, the offer that was listed for $49.95 also stated "Unlimited Backup Space" just as the Bitsdujour offer did. It also stated that 30 days of backups would kept on the backup site [File Versioning (30 Versions)], as did a lengthy discussion in the comments above. It also offered all of the following: Unlimited Backup Space, Unthrottled Bandwidth, Military Grade AES-256 Encryption, View File Online/Anywhere, Access from any device (iPad, Android, etc.), FilePop & DrivePop Licenses are Lifetime!, Never Pay for Cloud Backup Again!. All of the above mentioned items I believe were also mentioned either in the Bitsdujour offer itself or in comments that were posted by interested potential buyers.

The one thing that I found that is different is the following: Tim John specifically asks if all three of his computers would be covered by the Bitsdujour license. BurnWorld replies that, yes, indeed they would be.

In the Drivepop.com offer that I found this morning, the offer is a lifetime offer also, but the offer is limited to just ONE COMPUTER. The offers appear to be identical in all other respects. With everything else appearing to be the same as the BItsdujour offer, I apparently overlooked this subtle, but important difference.

I've tried to clarify this matter as best I can and by reading BurnWorld's comment above it appears as though my explanation is accurate. I apologize for the oversight regarding the usage of one computer vs. usage on multiple computers. With all of the other similarities in the two offers it was very easy not to see this one specific difference. In all other respects, the offers appear to be identical. My apologies for any inconvenience or concern to others. My oversight was certainly unintentional----and probably age related!

TopDog @ Gene Yonke, thanks for the info. I purchased the deal here and I for one am very happy with it. $59 for lifetime, unlimited backup is a fantastic deal. It is a risk and its success depends on Drivepop becoming popular enough to support the service. If they were extending this deal or a similar deal to the public that would have caused some concern. But I look forward to this service surviving and growing.

JMJ Squared Oh, my! Can you imagine that? This DrivePop operation actually has the gall to advertise their product in different ways and at different times. I mean, who ever heard of holiday promotions? Next thing you know, they'll offer a Christmas special or, goodness forbid, a Preferred Customer discount on additional services.

Why, they even sent me an email around June 15th with a time-limited upgrade offer. Now, I find out that they actually sent a similar email to their other customers. I am outraged. I thought I was the only one.

I feel so betrayed.

Pim Joosten @J L: The deals you mention are all a little bit worse than the BDJ deal. The comparable Father's Day deal (Ultimate plan = unlimited computers) is $79.99 instead of the $59.99 on BDJ. Even the Family Plan for 5 computers is still $5 more expensive. The other deal (WindowsTalk) includes FilePop HD and costs $99.99.

The only point of criticism one could have that in the description of this offer was "exclusively" for BDJ. But even that can be interpreted in different ways. Is the lifetime offer exclusive or is the extension of the offer on DrivePop's to a lifetime license exclusive? One could easily argue it is the latter, even if you look at it from a pure language perspective.

All in all I do not think it is strange that DrivePop tries to build its business by having various offers via various channels. They have got to make a start and I probably would have done the same thing.

@JMJ Squared: you almost had me there... Nice sarcastic post :)

James K @Arlene Manduca: Actually the external USB drive attached to your router MAY indeed be a NAS, but it's also a portable, external USB drive. Simply remove it from your router once in a while, and attach it to a computer you have the client software running on and back it up as a local drive. Then put it back on the router until the next time you need to back-up or reverify the files.

BurnWorld Ok hopefully I can clarify what this deal is for here through BitsDujour. This deal is for our Online Backup Service. Each license you purchase is for a single user login and will include unlimited computers with unlimited cloud backup space. There are no bandwidth restrictions or file size restrictions like other backup companies impose. This is one time payment for this plan which you can use to backup files you don't want to lose or you want to have access to from any other computer or any portable device through the apps (iOS, Android, Win8/RT, Blackberry). @Steve Suard: The current deal we are running on our site is half off the annual pricing. We brought back this lifetime license here for BitsDuJour members again due to the many requests from BDJ members which is a much better offer.

Note: this is not to be used for a full system backup and does not have full system restore function. Compare it to Carbonite Home but we also allow for video backup for which you can stream your movies/videos to your portable devices/phones/tablets, and you can also backup external drives which Carbonite does not include. NAS backup however is not part of this license but can be added for $80yr. But all your internal and external drives can be backed up.

Hopefully this clears up many questions but feel free to ask and I'll do my best to get back here to answer.

Everyone should consider this even if you already have an online backup service, this is great to have as a backup-backup ;) service at this pricing/license. I know many people last time got this to have a secondary backup in case their current service had an issue or if they wanted to cancel them at some point.

Thanks for looking at this offer.

ron r I see other users get their questions approved and posted here, but I asked the beneath yester but still no response. So I ask again:

1) "...If you add a file to your DrivePop that has been previously uploaded by you or another user, we may associate all or a portion of the previous file
with your account rather than storing a duplicate..."
If I upload a file called "test.txt" and another user also uploads a file called "text.txt", will there be any problems?
Or is the content also compared?
from: http://www.drivepop.com/terms/

2) To be clear, there is a total maximum amount of 5TB available for files that are NOT located internallly on the PC.
And that 5TB limit is free without any extra cost?
from: http://www.drivepop.com/terms/

3) Arkadiusz Robert asked about the briefcase, is this also included? If so which of the 3 versions of the briefcase?

4) You must login at least every 30 days? Will there be a warning mail sent when a user nears it's 30 day limit?
The TOS also states that in some cases you must wait 72 hours before you can restore. Is there a way for a user to see (in web interface?) or to be notfied which data will be reachable after 72 hours?
from: http://www.drivepop.com/terms/

5) "...We reserve the right to alter pricing, including ceasing to offer elements of the DrivePop Services.
DrivePop will inform you by email if the charge for a service is to be altered..."
Can this also happen for the lifetime promotion deal now running?
from: http://www.drivepop.com/terms/

6) There is a section "Compliance with Laws and Law Enforcement Requests"
Will the user be notified when there is such a reqeust from any official law-based instance?
I do not intent to use the service in such a way that it breaks the law.
But recent events in the news made be bit wary that information is disclosed without even the user knowing it.
from: http://www.drivepop.com/privacy/

7) If I delete a file/folder is then kept stored because of some laws that require instances to keep data for an x amoutn of years?
(or months or something like that?)

Yosh M @Burnworld wrote: "Note: this is not to be used for a full system backup and does not have full system restore function. "

Huh? It's a backup service that's not to be used for backup or restore? Or do you mean that it's not to be used to "image" and restore a whole computer?

Basically - I want to be able to specify a few directories on each computer & have it backup any files that are in, or get added to, those directories. Will this do that? And will it let me restore those files to the original or another computer (or my Android phone)?

Is versioning included?

Are deleted files kept backed up so that if I discover six months later that a file is missing, I'll be able to restore it?

If the answers to the above are affirmative, you've got a new customer!

Thanks,

H. H. Hallo,
first lets say thank you to bring up this interesting seeming offer for another day.

Please apologize for asking questions partly have been asked by other customers,
but since english is not my native language I´ms still not quite sure reading the answers.
So I´ll ask it with my own words

1. is it correct, that this offer for backing up has no time limit (no annual
subscription requirng renewal/additional fee after a certain period of time)?

2. what´s about data safety / privacy (e.g. when backing up important personal
documents or photos ?

3. Can one decide that one generally does not want to share anything in order
to improve security?

4. you described that there is unlimited space, but no full system backup - what
whould be in case one has several e.g. 4gb files of an acronis made own
disk backup
would this be possible and allowed to be stored?

5. What would happen in case one has no possibility to log in 1x/30days (e.g.
technical problems, longer absence,..)?
If this already could lead to deletion of files or closing the acoount it would
be a dealbreaker to my opinion, since it can be of great iomportance to have
a backup which is reliable - and not be lost after a short period of time

6. In case you want to prevent too much unused space by a time restriction
perhaps a "protected" area with limited space could be considered, so that
one could backup at least the files which are more important there,
without the risk of loosing them

Thank you for clarifying in advance
H.H.

BurnWorld @karl This is similar to Crashplan family, but we don't do backups to other drives. Meaning that the backup is only on the servers.

@kimmo The software initiates outbound TCP connections on ports 50234 and 50235. You will need to allow these connections through the firewall.

@Chris Roy Thanks for the correction.

"If I upload a file called "test.txt" and another user also uploads a file called "text.txt", will there be any problems?
Or is the content also compared? "

The content is compared, it does not base this on the title of the file.

"And that 5TB limit is free without any extra cost? "
No extra costs. All external drives have a 5TB limit, all internal drives there are no limits."

"Arkadiusz Robert asked about the briefcase, is this also included? If so which of the 3 versions of the briefcase? "

Briefcase is not included in this lifetime license. But we are offering BDJ members a 1st year discount if you only want this service or if you want to add it to a lifetime backup plan. Just contact us through the site.

"You must login at least every 30 days? Will there be a warning mail sent when a user nears it's 30 day limit?"

There is not a warning in place currently. This is the one of the most asked for features and development has this as a consideration to add to future improvements.

"The TOS also states that in some cases you must wait 72 hours before you can restore. Is there a way for a user to see (in web interface?) or to be notfied which data will be reachable after 72 hours? " There is no indication. But if the file is fully uploaded then it can be restored at any time.

"DrivePop will inform you by email if the charge for a service is to be altered..."
Can this also happen for the lifetime promotion deal now running?"
We are fully honoring the lifetime promotion. We will not ask you to pay again for the backup service that you are signing up for.

"Will the user be notified when there is such a reqeust from any official law-based instance?"
Yes we will have to contact you. But this has never happened and will most lilkely never happen. This just has to be stated.

"If I delete a file/folder is then kept stored because of some laws that require instances to keep data for an x amoutn of years?
(or months or something like that?)"

Not fully sure what you mean by this. If you delete a file/folder from your computer then it will automatically be removed on the server in 30 days.

Neil Is there a money back guarantee for 30 days or at least 15? I am interested (I currently use Carbonite and my subscription is almost up). I would try this in parallel for a few weeks, and if it works well, would replace carbonite. Otherwise I would want my money back if it's sub-par feature or performance wise.

Also, as someone asked, does it keep multiple versions of files like Carbonite does? This is important because sometimes a file becomes corrupted, which means the backup will be corrupted as well, and you need access to an earlier version.

Frank Stephens You could use this to backup your system if you have backup software that saves to a file on an external drive, and then backup that file to the cloud. Note that that could take a long time. If you just need to backup documents and things and can live with cloud limits in the gigabytes, you could just synchronize them to Google Drive, SkyDrive, etc.

Alan Stevenson Interesting from the T&C:
"With the exception of our business service, services that include DrivePop Backup are not to be used for archiving. You must at all times hold an original copy of the data in the original location on the system it was backed up from. If you delete files from your computer that have been backed up we will remove the corresponding backup from our servers."
OK, so no archiving - if the file isn't on my computer, it's deleted from the cloud service. Already a dampener.
But also, if there is, as stated in the product copy above, a 'fire, flood, or some other catastrophe that physically destroys your external drive and computer', then your files will no longer exist on your external driver and computer - and all your cloud backups will be erased too!!!!
One or two loose ends here, I think. Perhaps Burnworld Inc. can comment?

wts From BurnWorld above: " I know many people last time got this to have a secondary backup in case their current service had an issue or if they wanted to cancel them at some point."

I'm glad I got this in June as a secondary backup. My primary backup service, a well-reviewed company in this business in England (not Livedrive), falsely accused me of being a business user rather than a home user, wouldn't give me any evidence for their false accusations, tried to force me to their much more expensive and limited business plan, and then cut me off and deleted my backup without (so far) refunding my payments for unused service.

BurnWorld's plan has worked exactly as promised with fast uploads relative to Carbonite's bandwidth throttling and faster than the extra cost unthrottled bandwidth from that English company. My communications with BurnWorld lead me to conclude that Rob is running his company honorably. Note my only relationship with the company is as a customer.

Brian W 1) The 30 day storage is too short. I could live with 90 days.
Especially because I want to back-up my USB backup. I just got back from a 45 day business trip which means that the entire long back-up process would have to be repeated. (i.e. keep the 4TB USB drive connected for a few days).
[Crashplan can keep files forever. I have not had time to review others.]

2) I don't like "You must at all times run the Livedrive software on any computer that is being backed up". Why can't we simply run a periodic scan/update?

3) Requires Java. There are so many security concerns relating to Java. :(

I was in the process of placing an order and was adding FilePop HD Platinum which I assume buys DrivePop Platinum and that the Platinum version includes the Backup and the Briefcase. Is this correct? The confusion comes from "The Frequently Bought Together" reference to FilePop Ultimate DVD/Video Suite. I want a lifetime license for FilePop Platinum which includes the Briefcase. I DO NOT want the DVD/Video Suite. If this question and my previous question do not get posted shortly I'm going to go ahead with the $119.99 purchase on the assumption I'm getting a lifetime license for DrivePop Platinum which includes both the backup and the briefcase. BurnWorld @Alan The backup service requires that the files exist on your computer. When removed either on purpose or accident then the servers will keep a copy for 30 days so you can restore the file. This is typical for most 'backup' providers. We also offer a cloud storage product called Briefcase which you don't have to keep a copy on your computer.

@Larry
1. Can I save .exe, .msi and other executable files to DrivePop?
By default these are auatomatically blocked but you can upload if you really need to.
2. If files andd/or folders change, does DrivePro back up only the changed part of the file/folder or will it make duplicates?

It will only make the changes, no duplicates except for file versioning.

3. Do I schedule the backup or does DrivePop constantly monitor the selected drives, folders and files and back them up when they are changed like Carboninte?
It can be real time or you can set the scheduler.

4, Can I backup a folder but select only certain files in that folder to be backed up and can I add files to a folder after the folder has been selected?

Folder level only at this time.

@Karl The backup service does not run on Linux, but the Briefcase product does.
Another question: Your fine print says "DrivePop Online Backup Lifetime is licensed per computer, and not per user.". Does it mean I have to buy additional accounts for every computer?
This is based on the plan you purchase. Some plans are 1 computer others are 5, etc.. so whatever plan you purchase that's how many computer 'licenses' you get.

BurnWorld @curly Hi! If I fail to login within the required 30 days do I lose my account? If not, what happens? What is the penalty for failing to login at least once every 30 days?

The account will remain open it's just that the backup client will need to 'sync' up with the cloud server to make sure the backup is 'mirrored'. If a file is not found in 30 days then it will be deleted from the server thinking that you no longer want that file backed up. If this does happen then the next time it connects it will have that file uploaded again and it starts over.

BurnWorld @Alexander
I set up an account to test the service. Now when I try to purchase, even though I am logged in to Drivepop, it tells me that my domain is in use. Do I have to create a new domain or is it possible to use the one I already have (which I would very much prefer) ?

Please contact us to have the trial upgraded. Will send instructs on how to get this deal with your existing trial account.

BurnWorld @Tom When purchasing it offers an additional accounts option. What is this? Is this essentially a whole different account? How does one access it after purchasing?

Yes a whole separate account at a discount. We will follow up with you on how to setup the additional account.

Adrian Williams I have to say - the customer support is 1st Class. I already have an expired account with Livedrive which prevented me from getting started. A couple of emails between me and Roger at DrivePop got the whole thing sorted - and my 2nd gift account too. I'd already uploaded 2Gb of files before making the switch so I can vouch for the unrestricted speed of the system.
Highly recommended. Get the deal while you can !

Brian W @H.H. DrivePop is intended to run as a continuous service because it tracks file changes. I don't know what happens if you try to only run it once per day/week. (But most, and perhaps all, backup services probably recommend running continuously.)

You must connect once every 30 days or it will delete your files. For me, that is a killer. It takes so long to upload files, to have them disappear and repeat that process would be too painful. It appears that most backup services have this 30 day policy. CrashPlan will keep files forever. Probably others as well but I found it tiring searching reviews and providers because few tell you this up front. :(

Nick Kobe Just saw your reply to my question. Thank you! I still have not received the 25% discount code and I still need to read the answer to Alan Stevenson's concerns. I want to upgrade my computer and plan to store my data/document files in my backup account while doing the upgrade (new OS). It would be catastrophic if the files are deleted from the backup! If this is the case backup is of no value to me.

Karl M. There's still a lot of confusion for me:

The fine print here on BDJ says: "DrivePop Online Backup Lifetime is licensed per computer, and not per user." – but it says also "Each license allows installation on all owned computers". I'm sorry, I don't get it.

The fine print says "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for current subscriptions. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted." – Does it mean that sometimes in the future we have to pay for a software upgrade?

Yosh M Another question: what does it mean that you must log in every 30 days? Does that mean I must manually go to your website & log in? Or is it sufficient that the backup software on my computer(s) connect to your server at least once within 30 days to execute a backup or say that nothing has changed & needs backing up?

If it requires that I manually log in every 30 days - that's a real downside. I expect my backup software to be "set & forget" - only when I need to recover something do I want to remember it's there. That could be months or years apart. But I want it quietly humming & working all the while in the background, keeping me safe. I don't want to have to remember to manually log in every few weeks...

Please elaborate

Thanks.

Al Johnston I purchased your $79.99 offer...I have an external Seagate home and when I attempt to add the network storage device I get a pop up indicating I have 0 network storage device available? Aren't uploading external storage devices permitted?

Thank you for your assistance.

BurnWorld @Yosh You don't need to login to the website. The backup client just need to connect to the service in that time frame. If you just let it run in the background then you don't need to manually do anything.

This could be a big problem. A computer fails (motherboard, disk drive) or is stolen or destroyed in fire. The owner finally has money to buy another computer 45 days later. The owner attempts to restore the data but discovers that it is missing because the data in the "cloud" was purged for not updating in the last 30 days. Am I misunderstanding something?

I am very interested in this product but do have some reservations.

BurnWorld @Douglas This is true and probably the only 'limitation' about an online backup service. This is pretty typical for online backup, Carbonite does the same thing.

Michael Burkley Friends,

I forgot to ask that if I have three computers with the DrivePop software installed on them, do I need to have all three computers contact DrivePop at least once a month, or will just having one of those three contact the website be enough. I'm thinking of if I go on a three month mission trip, for example, and take my laptop with me, will I only have the files from my laptop kept and the rest gone or will they all be available when I get back.

Douglas Huddle I am not a Carbonite user but I did a restore from Carbonite for a friend that had been off line for about 7 weeks. His data restored OK though it took about 6 hours.

Is there some other way to keep DrivePop from deleting the user data after 30 days?

Michael Burkley Just a suggestion: I and many others are concerned that clues would be permanently deleted if away from your computer for more than 30 days. If you could have an emergency (or "trip") freeze on account that would eliminate that concern. As it is, even though I bought your lifetime package, I'd be more likely to recommend Bitcasa which provides unlimited backups and archiving with no deletions (and with file sharing and streaming) for $99/yr (WAY more than what you charge but for the security...)

Thanks for what you are doing.

Danny Douglas Huddle,

Therefore, it is wise to two different places: Online backup and remote at home (NAS, hard drive, etc.), so you have then a lot more certainty about securing your important backup(s)

FYI, Crashplan does not delete.

I am wondering if your service can keep files available for an extended time on request? As @Douglas points out, it's a pretty serious problem - and the scenario he described has happened to me with a different backup service. :-(

Chris Roy Jackson @ BurnWorld

It would be VERY helpful to many of us here if you could state Which of these 2 statements (following) is correct !!!
I believe the 2nd sentance is correct based upon statements elswhere on your site, However... Isn't it better to NOT cause confusion for so many of your potential new customers ??? !!!
From the "Fine Print" (above):
Only ONE of these statements can be correct !!! Please tell us which one:

1. DrivePop Online Backup Lifetime is licensed per computer, and not per user.
2. Each license allows installation on all owned computers, and DrivePop Online Backup Lifetime may be used at exactly the same time on each of them.

Thanks-in-Advance,
Chris Roy Jackson

Jorge Watanabe Sorry for reposting, but I've posted my question several hours ago and it remais unanswered. I've just purchased this offer and I have a question about Briefcase. If I purchase it, will I able to share all my backed up files, or only those which are stored inside Briefcase? Regards,

Thanks for the clarification. Is that true for each computer? If I have two computers & only one connects every day - does that preserve all files on my account - or will the second computer's files be removed after 30 days of non-connection?

I must say 30 days seems like a pretty short time... maybe 90 days would be more reasonable. It's scary to think that I can go unprotected simply by not noticing that a computer has failed to connect for 30 days. No warning or anything - just poof, it's all gone.

BurnWorld Sorry @Jorge you can only share files that are in your Briefcase. But you can easily copy your already backed up files into Briefcase just by click on the file and say copy to Briefcase.

@Yosh each computer is treated separately. You would need to connect each one. I agree that 90 days would be better and have been pushing for this but my hands are tied when it comes to that decision.

Neil After three months of service, I think I'm giving up. The LiveDrive software consumes a full GB of memory (compared to BackBlaze which I'm now testing and it's keeping to a memory profile of only 11MB). Also, I just bought a new computer to replace mine, and there's no way once I transfer my data to the new computer to tell LiveDrive it's the same backup source---so it will start backing up all over again.

Also, with the LiveDrive software, I had to throttle the CPU usage using ProcessLasso, because it doesn't play well with others and consumes too much CPU as well. I limited to two of my 6 cores.

I'll probably set LiveDrive up on the family Mac instead, assuming that doesn't kill my internet connection speed on my computer, since it's paid for already. But I'm coming to the conclusion that it's not really worth the resources it hogs on my PC.
