HJ B I installed the application on a Windows 10 computer (with most current updates and more than adequate disk space and memory), I tried to run it several times. Each time I received an error to the effect that something had not been installed.

HJ B It is now working for me.

The program ought to have an option whereby, for each pdf from which material is extracted, the resulting files will automatically be placed in a folder that includes the name of the pdf from which the material was extracted.

Also, the program does not work properly if the pdf is totally based upon graphics, i.e. text is also in graphic form. An effort should be made to distinguish between graphic pictures and graphic text.

Adobe Acrobat has an function that will extract graphics from a pdf; however, I do not believe it has the batch extraction feature.
Oct 10 2019 at 11:30pm Copy Link

Yeoh Ray Mond It is possible to store the extracted content in subfolders that are created from the source file properties, and we've expanded on this topic here (http://www.yohz.com/blogs...-explorer/).

With regards to extracting text from graphics, this involves the use of OCR libraries, and from our experience, the resolution of most embedded graphics in PDF files are only adequate for viewing and printing. The OCR libraries we've tried require images to have at least a 300 dpi resolution before the text can be scanned accurately.

Mark Krieger I figured my problem out.
The program does not display properly on HighDPI screens. A column is missing and some other small issues.
Set it to use System (Enhanced) scaling instead of its own and everything works.

HJ B Further to our prior exchange.

Thank you for the info concerning automatic creation of named folders.

As regards OCR to enable extraction of text and graphics from totally graphic pdfs, your conclusion has not been my experience,

In any event, I suggest that, when pdf text is in graphic format, the program should warn the user, so as to give the option of terminating the extraction. Otherwise, one ends up with possibly hundreds of pages of graphic text, when all one wants is non-text graphics to be extracted.

Allan User Hey! This is very good software. I bought it October 2018. The Dev is Very Responsive! I had some suggestions and he worked with me on changes thru the next several days! Very quick changes and responses, even in 1 day!

The program is EXCELLENT to pull sections / pages from PDFs I have been studying into plain text. The dev put in a suggestion to keep paragraphs together so they flow into the word processor or database I use to keep my studies! Super helpful feature. Images can be extracted on selected pages so graphs etc can be put in my notes.

Yep, fanboy of this program and @ the current price, I bought 3 copies to put on my machines and to support the dev!

So, if you need info out of PDFs, even occasionally, you will benefit from this software.

Mitchell User A scanned pdf file is comprised only of "image" pages. The file more or less is a collection of .jpg files for example, including text. If you run this program against a scanned pdf file, it is going to extract all pages in the selected range including pages comprised only of "text." It can differentiate images from text in standard pdf files: non-scanned pdf files.

Allan User Hi All Bits folks,

There are lots of options on line and programs that will OCR your PDF files that will convert PDF file with only images of text - into text :)

I like that I can select Many individual pages or page sequences to put into a single file OR multiple files for study purposes. Say a reference has 800+ pages but only chapter 6 needs to be reviewed and further only page 300-312 and page 348 are needed - this program does just that :)

Hope that help anyone out there,

John Sutherland Excellent software tool. Does exactly what it promises, good interface, very well written, Especially useful for extracting images/text from PDF files rapidly. Batch operations simple and fast. I tested it on extraction of images from a large number of image-heavy PDF files, performed flawlessly. Extracted 5500+ image files from the PDFs in a few minutes perfectly. This will be my go-to utility for the multiple PDF tasks that it performs (and performs well). Highly recommended.

Robert Crombie Hi,
Regarding your program - Easy PDF Explorer
I am interested in converting the whole file(s) into images (NOT just pages within the PDF file). And a semi automatic way for a program (VB6) to call it.
Does your program have a command line interface ?
Such an interface allows you to call (execute) the program, whilst passing instructions such as -
Convert all PDFs in folder C:\PDFs\
Into JPGs
Placing the JPGs into folder C:\JPGs\
It would be nice if it could delete each PDF after it is converted to JPG

Similar functionality could also be provided WITHOUT using the command line.
That would entail the program having some settings where, we tell it where the PDFs folder is (to watch), and where the output JPGs folder is, and the program can be told to run minimized, and keep watching the PDFs folder.
Meaning every time the program sees PDFs (in the PDFs folder), it converts them into JPGs (into the JPGs folder) automatically.
It would delete the PDFs after it has converted them.

Thanks,
Robert Crombie

kydara I've been looking for a long time for a piece of software that can determine if a PDF is an image-only or has been OCR'ed. I've come across a few bandaid solutions but nothing really reliable.

For clarification, I do not need software to do the OCR; I already have software to do that. I just need to identify PDFs which NEED to be OCRed. Obviously, need to do this in batch form. If it were only a few PDFs, I could just open them and try to select text. If I can, then it's been OCRed. If I can't, then it's an image and I can send it to my OCR engine. But doing this for thousands of PDFs manually is impractical.

Can this software help with this task? Please be specific in your answer. Thanks.

Yeoh Ray Mond @kydara

Hi, could you please download this version and give it a try (https://www.yohz.com/down...up_new.zip)?

So what you do is first select the 'count images and text option' on the PDF file list toolbar (on the right panel).
Then select your PDF files in the file browser. The PDF file list will then be populated with details of the selected files.
Theoretically, PDF files with only images and no text should show a text count of 0 and image count of > 0.
Click on the text count column to sort the files by that value.
Now remove the files with a text count > 0 by either selecting the range of files using the shift-mouse click combo and click on the 'Remove selected files from list' button (next to the 'Copy to folder' button),
or
deselect the files with text count > 0.
Now click on the 'Copy to folder' button, select the folder you want to copy the un-OCRed files to, and the selected files will be copied over for you to scan.

eb235 Is it possible to install a trial for version 2.7 on a computer with a valid but older license ?
I installed v2.7 on a different folder but I get an almost blank windows (File+Help only, no explorer-style pane) when I launch the new version.
Now I have uninstalled the new version but it seems this wiped out the older version. I reinstalled v2.7 but only to get the same symptoms.

I assume from the pop-up I get at launch that Easy PDF Explorer is able to notice there is an older license (deep in the registry ?) on the computer but interprets the installation of a new version, too recent for the installed license, as trying to circumvents the older license rather than simply trying to "trial" the new features.

I hope my question will receive an answer. But right now I do have a suggestion :
rather than only verifying the license at launch, that is once an installation has ruined a running program, why not test it at the start of an installation ?
That way the user is warned that (s)he will be stuck if (s)he proceeds. Or (s)he may enroll for a trial period of the new version...

Namely, what I was after was testing the extraction of pages from a PDF (not present in my old 2.2 version). Because some PDFs have split images and extracting such images as images would require stitching them afterward, a cumbersome process.

1. You should have expected that the new install would have overwritten the old one.

Yeoh Ray Mond @franp User If the PDF identifies the image as an object, then Easy PDF Explorer extracts the image in its native format and resolution. If PDF identifies the image as a bitmap, then Easy PDF Explorer reencodes and saves the bitmap to a PNG file.

Daniel User I've been testing the trial version. The program is quite fast, no doubt about it.

But strangely every extracted image is upside down and twisted so that that's on the left is on the right and vice versa. Is this a "feature" of the trial version or does it do this in the full version.

And when exporting to Word, the images are all missing. There's a blank box for each image. Again, is this a "feature" of the trial version or will it do this with the full version too?

And for heaven's sake, why save images as in PNG format which may be suitable for onine images, but not for print images?
Aug 14 2022 at 8:06am Copy Link
0
Yeoh Ray Mond @Daniel User - the trial version only adds a TRIAL text onto the exported images. It doesn't rotate/flip the images. You will probably get the same results in the full version. Same for the Word export - there seems to be an issue exporting and embedding the images in the Word document.

Could you please send us the PDF document that's exhibiting those errors, to support@yohz.com?

With regards to exporting the images in PNG format, it makes sense to export them to a lossless format, which you can then convert to a lossy format if needed.
