Michael R. Are the files saved in a proprietary format (only EverDesk can use) or in a standard-format (like HTML, DOC, ...)?

Since current version is 5.6, this sounds that v6 is pretty near. Is v6 free for today's buyers?

EverDesk Support Michael,

1. EverDesk stores all the files in standard formats (eml, html, doc etc.).

2. EverDesk Upgrade Policy
New versions of EverDesk are released from time to time with enhancements and new features. There are two ways to upgrade - free and paid:
Free upgrade
All upgrades within 60 days of your purchase are free.
Additionally, you have free lifetime revision upgrades within your purchased version (e.g. v5.0 to v5.1)
Paid upgrade
If you wish to upgrade your version of EverDesk (e.g. from v5.1 to v6.0) after the 60 day period following your purchase, you will be offered a 30% discount on the purchase of the new license.
Should beta versions of EverDesk be released for public use, these beta versions are excluded from the above and can be used until the full new version is released. After that beta versions of EverDesk can not be used and an upgrade to a new version will be needed based on the terms explained above.

Niels Erik Karkov Just to understand I use gmail and is very fond of the archive. If I save an email to the folders in your program does that mean that it is removed from the gmail archive - i.e. can I find the specific email both in the gmail archive and in your programs archive? ir does the one operation exclude the other?
Best wishes

EverDesk Support Niels,

You can copy emails to the local folders on your PC and have them both in Gmail and locally. Or you can move them out of the Gmail account folder and only have a local copy (anything moved out of the Gmail folder is deleted from the server if you are using IMAP; if you are using POP3 then Gmail always keeps a copy on the server).

There is no 'save' operation in EverDesk, you just operate with emails as regular files. You don't need to 'save' attachments either, they are already stored as regular files on your pc.

Pavi Johnson Hi, this would be a killer program, but it seems to lack drag and drop support for messages (and even files) - is this correct?

For example, I want to drag a mail into InfoQube or any other program and cannot get it to work. One seems to have to go to the file explorer and drag the .eml. Is this an oversight?

Best, /Pavi

JW Trying to purchase this program.
Went in and offered my Google login to create account, but then it all went sour and each time I try to buy with the discount it takes me to a different page indicating the Google add-on separately from the EverDesk v5.8.
Heaven knows why they're making it so difficult - but then it's their loss if we aren't able to obtain it in an "uncomplicated" way.
Can BDJ advise?

Metta Zetty Can an extremely large Eudora database (hundreds of folders and subfolders) and thousands upon thousands of messages be imported into EverDesk?

If so, this could be a God-send, simply for preserving and making accessible this huge collection of content and original writing I've accumulated over the years.

John Hood Using your trial first. First time I imported my Gmai messages it brought in about 5k + and arrayed them by received time and date just as they can and should be displayed in outlook. This is good. However, when I closed the program and came back in, your program began importing more gmail messages but gave the messages in this second import action the same date and exact same time for each message every imported message on the second run. Why? Why are the second import clumps of messages NOT inserting at the proper chronological time and date Received? I have 100's of messages now that are sitting top of the first import action with today's date and time. Can't buy this program until you tell me this is just temporary until the second importing action is done. Help me understand please.

EverDesk Support Pavi,

Drag-n-drop works inside the UI (and there is also a new method called pick-n-drop where you can pick files using the [+] icon at the right edge of the name field), but the outside interaction is limited to accepting dropped files as attachments in the message editor. The main window in this version does not allow drag-n-drop exchange with other programs. It's something we are planning to add in the future.

John,

The add-ons are separate purchases because not everybody needs them. Although it would be nice to have an easy package deal for occasions such as this BDJ promotion. We will try to add it for the next time. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Metta,

There is an option to import data from Eudora. We haven't tried extremely large amounts of messages, but you can choose to do it by selecting only a part of it for each import if you encounter any problems.

bvssunnydale,

EverDesk is a complete standalone email client. You can import data from Outlook and a number of other email applications. But it doesn't require anything other software to function.

EverDesk Support John,

That's how Gmail POP3 works. They limit the number of messages per session. First time you check your Gmail account via POP3 from a new device/client, it will give you only N most recent ones that you haven't received on that device/client yet. And then they keep giving you more in subsequent sessions. Gmail servers decide how many messages they give you in each session based on some internal procedures (probably depending on how busy they are). If you have a lot of messages on the server, it may take a lot of sessions to retrieve them all.

IMAP doesn't have these limitations. If you choose IMAP in account settings, you will see your whole mailbox in real time, although the initial sync can take a while (depending on how many messages you have in the account).

Metta Zetty Thanks, EverDesk, for your prompt clarification about the older EverDesk version here on BDJ.

I am also looking forward to your feedback in response to my previous question about importing Eudora databases:

-- If so, will Eudora's original tree structure be preserved?

John Hood Yup aware of process in dropping so many gmails. It sorted out and lined up by receipt date after the second lump of exports. I like your program - would like a little more room to see my documents even with adjusting the heights it is a small window. (I changed to have the c:\ root directory the default doc Dir so I am not stuck with the just the Documents listing.

Couple of things still bother me. When I go to get my contacts your screen wants practically total access to my all my Google stuff. Not comfortable with that. If you had check boxes and let me give you only access to Contacts to import I would be a happy camper. Opening up all of Google to include to my Google drive makes me nervous. Also the Cloud thing. Hate clouds. Don't trust them. Really don't want however to let you manage my Google Drive. When I say Don't allow, I of course get errors. Down side, I have to hand type all my contacts each and every time - :( I understand why you need to manage, just don't like to open the door.

EverDesk Support Niels,

Are you using IMAP or POP3?

IMAP: The program will sync with your mailbox and show all messages in it. If you do not wish to download them all, you can click on IMAP Options in the account settings and choose not to auto-download anything. Then it will only show message headers and download messages only on demand (when you view or open them).

POP3: If you don't want to see old messages, open Gmail in your web browser, go to Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP, and select "Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on".

EverDesk Support John, More screen space: you can get more horizontal space by switching the folder tree to the pop-up mode (see the << icon in the upper-right corner of the tree area) and resizing the Preview area or switching it to the horizontal mode. You can get more vertical space by turning off the main menu, switching the QuickBoard into the pop-up mode or turning it off, and switching the Preview to the vertical mode. Google authorization: if you are using the Advanced Google Support, the program will ask authorization to access your Google account. It uses one access token per account which includes Contacts, Calendar and Drive. Splitting it into 3 separate authorizations would lead to confusion and create inconvenience for those who want to use more than one Google feature. You can choose what to sync with Google in the Google tab of the account settings. If you don't turn on the Drive sync, the program will never access Drive.

Windows Search is the standard Windows indexing service. EverDesk uses it to search inside emails. If the location where you chose to store EverDesk files is included in the system Indexing Options (in Control Panel) then the result will start appearing once Windows indexes the files in it. If you just added it there manually, try restarting the program.

Google Add-On is $15. You can try the program with full functionality (including all Google stuff) for 30 days for free. However, the BDJ offer for the base program is only valid today (for the next 9 hr). You can use the deal and buy the base program now, but select the Free Trial at the start screen to check out the advanced Google support and decide whether you need it or not. Once you are done checking it out (or the free trial is over), you can Log In from the start screen and activate your license. The add-on can be purchased at any time.

Metta Zetty (1) Are any special characters allowed in the file and folders names within EverDesk?

(2) If so, do you have a list of which special characters are and are not allowed?

(3) If some special characters are NOT allowed, will the presence of these special characters in the names of preexisting files and folders create problems either:
-- DURING an email import or
-- AFTER an email import when attempting to access my imported files and folders?

(4) If the files and folder do successfully import, but they cannot be accessed afterward, will simply renaming the files/folders after the import resolve the access issue?

The reason I ask is that I've used several special characters as part of my mailbox and folder naming convention in Eudora. These characters include the equal sign, the hyphen (dash sign), the underscore, the plus sign, the arrow signs, the asterisk and the tilde -- and I'm wondering now if any of these characters will create problems during and/or after my Eudora import.

Any feedback you can provide on this potentially criticalt issue will be appreciated.
May 29 2016 at 4:10pm Copy Link

EverDesk Support Metta,

All characters are allowed in EverDesk. File names that are not allowed in Windows file system are adjusted to meet Microsoft's requirement, but inside EverDesk they will still show in the original form. For example, if a message had the subject line "Re: Hello?", its corresponding file will be named "Re_ Hello_.eml", but it will still display as "Re: Hello?" in EverDesk.

CFGuy Hi- this concerns me "You must install/register the software within 30 days, and cannot do so afterwards". If I buy a new computer in the future, can the software be re-installed and activated on the new system? Also, since the software is licensed per "user" with 3 system installs allowed, what if I currently have 1 desktop system, install and activate this program within 30 days of purchase, but then buy a new laptop 3 months from now. Will a second (of the three) allowable install seats be available for me to install this program and activate it on my new laptop, or since 30 days post-purchase has expired, will I not be able to use my other 2 remaining installs (for other owned systems)? This "install/register within 30 days of purchase" seems to be becoming more prevalent these days, and as a software consumer I see it as a definite negative selling point, and to be quite honest, I'm not sure what purpose it serves on the software manufacturer's/retailer's end. I can understand "activation" requirements, and install limits (to prevent licensing abuse of the consumer), but why does the manufacturer/retailer want to dictate how long a consumer has to install the program? If someone (anyone) offer some insight on this rationale, I would be interested to hear about it. Thanks.
May 29 2016 at 6:55pm Copy Link

EverDesk Support CFGuy,

The "install/register the software within 30 days" clause must be something related to the BDJ deal. You need to activate your purchased license acquired via this deal within 30 days. We'll check if that clause is really necessary for the future. You can always contact us at supporteverdesk.com if you encounter any problems with license activation.

You can install EverDesk on 3 systems. There is no limit on the activation time, nothing about 30 days or anything like that. Each system is recognized by its OS and hardware, same as in Microsoft (and many others) products. OS and major hardware upgrades change the system ID and count as new installs. However, you can reset the installation counter via our website (www.everdesk.com, requires logging in). You should always be able to use EverDesk on 3 different systems at any given time.

EverDesk Support Metta,

You can choose a Dropbox folder as the location for EverDesk files (in Settings) and work with the same data from different computers, but preferably not at the same time. It's not designed for simultaneous access and each client will save its data with no regard for the others.

You don't need to store things in a cloud if they are already stored in one, i.e. if you are working with a Google account. But making backups is always a good idea.

EverDesk software itself cannot be run from a Dropbox folder, it needs to be installed properly in Windows.

EverDesk is a Windows application. There are currently no plans for other platforms.

Import from Eudora includes mail and address book, but not sorting rules or stationery/personalities.

John Hood Pavi and BitsJuDour. It is not helpful for Everdesk to be saving to .eml. Especially when I have 16 years of outlook messages with the .msg extension. Everdesk wants us to add their folder to microsoft search in order for their search to work. When you do that you wind up with a hodge podge of Outlook .msg messages and Everdesk .eml messages in an overall laptop/system search. It is a PITA. The .eml extension if you use office is for dinosaurs. I wasted a lot of time yesterday reindexing and specifically indexing the Everdesk Folder.

Further, trying to pay for this program is like trying to do your taxes online. Do not understand why they just cannot take you directly to a pay page from BitsDuJour and get it over with instead of the circular try it for 30 day drill. Everdesk, give me the link to the pay page and let me get on with paying.

BitsDuJour, Everdesk has us on a merry-go-round in trying to pay for this bloody program. I like the program but good grief. On and on about Eudora yada yada and no straight forward go here to BUY. And, they should issue a license like 99 percent of software producers do.

I want the buy link, I want to pay, and I want the BitsDuJour discount. This is crazy. Check your records - I have bought more than dozen and a half programs from through you but this definitely is exasperating.

EverDesk Support John,

Your situation seems to be very specific to your system. Outlook doesn't store messages as .msg unless you export them manually. We fail to see why having EverDesk messages indexed by Windows is an issue. Storing messages as files instead of a proprietary database (such as Outlook .pst) is one of the advantages of EverDesk.

We are sorry that the purchase procedure didn't work well for you. Others were able to buy the program without any issues. If you still wish to take the BDJ deal, please email us directly at supporteverdesk.com and we'll send you a discount code with the same discount on your purchase via www.everdesk.com. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Metta Zetty FYI, I bought the software last night with no problem whatsoever -- and, for those of us who are not Outlook users, the .eml message format has not been a problem either. I just set the default program to open .eml with EverDesk, and the process is clean and simple.

So far, I'm delighted with the software, and I look forward to switching over to it as my primary email management program soon.
May 30 2016 at 1:18pm Copy Link

Pavi Johnson @John, just to mention, eml is a plain text format created to comply with industry standard RFC 5322. You can open them with notepad - msg, not so much. There are tons of free converters for eml/msg...

Why didn't you just import your existing Outlook mail into EverDesk and then setup your accounts to check new mail from there?

The point I was trying to make is that you always need a plain text backup of email. Outlook PST is a disaster waiting to happen (it gets corrupted often). This program serves both as a nice email client and an automatic on-disk backup.

Yes, I didn't like the purchase process either when I initiated it. However, in the end it was about the same time/hassle as normal Bitsdujour purchases, which I have done about 30 times (!).

Best, /Pavi

John Hood Outlook is practically an industry standard in medium and large businesses. As of note, I have used it for the past 20 years without one corruption. [Changing to newer laptops 2 or 3 times over the years]. .msg outlook mail format is just fine and alive and well. .eml is outdated and is for freebie dime store email programs - not for businesses or serious users. I happen to like the document feature of Everdesk - but don't like the .eml aspect of it. Remember - when using any email system back it up. Wait, I need to check Everdesk to see if it has a backup feature. Guess what, I went to the Help page http://www.everdesk.com/support/help - no Backup category. Maybe it is hidden somewhere and since it just showed up on the scene I haven't found it yet. Same goes for spell check. I maintain both for the moment because I don't like my eggs in just one basket.

Metta Zetty @John Hood: FWIW, EverDesk does include a spell checking function, and I'm backing up my EverDesk mail the same way I backup all my other files and folders -- remotely.

John Hood Great - enjoy. Whatever floats your boat. I prefer the ease of a button or a drop down inside the program rather than exercising my system or special program type backups of which I have many and do many times in a given week.

Duplication is the mother of safety and not a mother of a screw up.

Have fun with your product. Following your numerous threads you seem to be a big fan. Go for it.

BTW: If you remotely backup to a cloud .. not a fan of clouds. Amazon's maybe ... but not any of my personal stuff anywhere on any outside my control server(s). And, whatever I may put on a cloud I Kruptos 2 it to death. A program I did buy here. Love BitsDuJour.

Pavi Johnson @John, no reason to get into an argument. We all seem to be trying to do the same thing: have reliable email backup. From our perspective, this is achieved via EverDesk's on file mail copies. From yours, Outlook and msg are required - cool.

I sync my files to my synology NAS (encrypted) and then use a great program called Syncovery (was on Bitsdujour) to copy encrypted copies to the cloud. It's a very easy, stable and secure workflow. Because of Everdesk's on disk mail, I need never do any export to get mail backup. That works for me.

For you, there is a program called MessageExport for Outlook (was on Bitsdujour, I got it) that can do automated backups to msg. The reason I turned to EverDesk is that my Outlook gives issues with just 2 accounts (might be an Exchange issue), and I have several more accounts - they all work in EverDesk.

Best, /Pavi
