You’re still using Windows Explorer to manage your files? Why? If you’ve been finding Windows’ stock answer to file management to be a bit lacking, I urge you to consider switching to today’s discount software promotion, FileBoss!

FileBoss is an innovative file manager that effectively addresses all functions that you need to perform file management, better than Windows Explorer. With FileBoss, you can achieve fast, accurate, flexible, and easy copying, moving, duplication, and backup of files and folders – and the program won’t quit out on you if it has a problem with a single file!

Additionally, you can use FileBoss to rename thousands of files using any naming convention you can think of. Need confirmation of each file? FileBoss will do that. Don’t care and want it done all in one go? FileBoss can do that too.

Most importantly, FileBoss gives you the power you need when it comes to finding files meeting a very specific criteria, like date modified, long names, or specific paths. And with multiple tabs and tab groups, FileBoss can be configured to show you files in a way that’s most compatible with your workflow!

Dexter Bell The FileBoss whole home license is good for all the computers in a single family residence including laptops and any computers used in a home office. In other words you don't need a separate business license to run FileBoss on the computers in the home office - they are covered by the single, Whole Home License.

Hope that helps,

DUPLICATES
You can find duplicate files in a two different folders or down through single or multiple paths. For more on how to do this please see:
www.theutilityfactory.com...-files.htm
It is based on using Virtual Folders which are simply the results of a search. For more about finding files please see:
www.theutilityfactory.com...-files.htm

FTP
The current version of FileBoss does not include and integrated FTP client. And while it is one of the major modules that we will be releasing for the version 3.x series of releases we have not finalized the the full release schedule yet so I don't know when it will be available though probably not during the next six months.

The documentation for Dual Tab mode is admittedly scant at the moment. We will have the main documentation for it up on the website by the end of next week and the video shortly after that. Since you watched the other video you already know that we don't have Steven Spielberg or even Bugs Bunny on staff to help slick videos.

Two sentence summary. Click the 'Dual Tabs' button to force FileBoss into dual tab mode. Then click the 'Compare' button to perform a comparison of the the files in the two folders, newer, older, same, unmatched. Buttons on each tab's toolbar allow quick copy operations between the two tabs.

I apologize that this is tardy. I will see what I can to to get a better overview up on the website before Sunday and when done post the link here.

TAPTRONIC Hi Dexter, my other question was about whether the software can detect folder sizes and if we can sort by folder size. This helps locate large files and folders full of files on disks that need to be cleaned up... You had answered the first question but then answered about FTP... :-)

Roberto while using double panes i have some issues.

could you reproduce? http://vimeo.com/62437014

switching from pane1 to pane 2 and back to pane1, the last selected file is opened.

same happens when going from pane1 to pane2, the second file goes to "change name" mode.

this happens with 3 of my computers (2xp and 1 seven). Is this a feature?

Dexter Bell Hi All,

The company that hosts our sever is having real problems that started early this afternoon (West Coast US time) so the website has frequently been so slow as to not respond and the email service almost non-existent.

Hopefully it will be fixed soon, but just in case we are working to bring up our backup site at another company's facility - but that will take quite a while.

Sorry for the inconvenience - what a great weekend for this to happen for the first time in over seven years at that provider.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Yes we can reproduce it on one of our computers here and it has been fixed. We will continue to test to make sure there aren't side effects to the fix (the problem was the side affect of another change) and release sometime tomorrow. I will post here when it is available.

Thanks much for the video: it really made it easy to quickly reproduce the problem.

While they can't be sorted by folder size the sizes can be seen after a virtual folder has been created. As soon as the website is fixed I'll create a blog post with pictures of how to do it along with some other tips about locating huge files. And when it is ready I'll post a link to here, though is is probably at least 12 hours away.

Roberto Hello Dexter,

now the panes problem is solved here, and the tabs cursor issue is solved too.

Dexter Bell Robert and Ralph,

"is normal to have visible flickering while using fileboss?"

Normal in that it does happen to varying degrees on different hardware? Yes. This is most evident when switching between different types of panes such as from a norml tab view to a tab containing a virtual folder but it does happen other times as well.

Normal in the sense that we are satisfied with it? No.
We are working on it. Most programmers would say, with justification, just turn Redraw off and then on after all is ready. Unfortunately the complexity of the UI doesn't make it that simple. We are, however, working on several different approaches to solve the problem but since the potential for side effects is huge each takes a lot of testing. Hopefully it will be smoothed out soon.

That was probably a way to long an explanation so here is the short version: We are aware of the problem on some hardware and are working to resolve the issue.

Thanks,
Dexter

Roberto Hello Dexter,

its not a problem for me, just curious about all was working as expected.

a small suggestion:

when switching from "left pane" to "right pane", if i click on the selected file (on red), i get a pane switch and a file rename action with just one click.

in another filemanagers, changing pane is a single action (never mind where you click), for renaming a file you have to click again.

does this have sense?

thanks for your responsiveness.

J S Hi Dexter, I'm glad to see that after I contacted Nico about Your new version 3 release, You & He were able to come to an arrangement about listing FileBoss v3 for a promotion on Bitsdujour.

For my memory and testing of FileBoss version 2 was a great file manager and hopefully and hopefully v3 wont disappoint.

The v2 promotion in 2008, until now is a very long time between offerings, so lets hope You get enough interest and takeup from today to make it worth Your while and spread the good word about a great product.

Cheers, J

Peter C1 2 Questions after reading the fine print as well as the license info:

Q1. Upgrades are included for 12 months, but can I assume: 1a: all updates until the release of version 4 will be free to the existing license holder?
1b: that version 4 wont be released within 12 months or in fact version 4 hasn't even been dreampt of yet?

Q2. As you use PLiMUS is it possible & how do I go about: 2a: buying a License for myself but not with the CreditCardHolder's name as displayed on my credit card?
2b: buying a License As A Gift for a relative or close friend?

Many thanks

Louis H Can anyone list the advantages of FileBoss over other file managers, such as DO, xplorer2, XYplorer, or the free Q-Dir?

From what little I can gather in a basic search for independent reviews of FileBoss, it's current strength resides in it's search and copy functions.

It is not listed in the current Wiki that compares various file managers, but that only means someone has not included it for comparison.

I am honestly looking for someone to sell me on this one.

Why do I need yet another File Manager?

And why FileBoss?

Thanks!

Tazzie I am having trouble finding how to set customized colors for the tree backgrounds in FileBoss. Due to sensitivity to light, I need to tone down/change white backgrounds on the computer. Does FileBoss have these settings? I really like how FileBoss has evolved. I tried it out years ago but at that time I really needed a more robust program, although I did like FileBoss. Thanks!

Dexter Bell David Rambridge asked:

"I use the comment field in the file attributes, but I cannot see anyway to view the comments field along with filename, attri, Date Modified etc.

Not at the moment. The comments field you describe is located inside some file types such as MS Office documents. At the moment FileBoss works with files as if they were just huge globs of bites and doesn't care what is in them.

Around mid-summer FileBoss will be able to access the meta-fields within most graphics files (and use them for such things as renaming an sorting). After that will come more fields in other types of documents such as MS Office files.

So it isn't imminent but it is on the release schedule.

Thanks

Yes it does make sense. I will make sure it gets corrected within the next week or two. Strange I use FileBoss more than anyone else in the world and never noticed it (probably because I usually click on the icon not the name). But neither has anyone else ever reported that behavior. But it definitely works the way you describe and it will be fixed.

You are write. At the moment FileBoss works with the traditional file systems not plugin devices. We have a semi-working version that does (sort of) but it needs a more work and a lot more testing before release as the code has the potential for side-effects. I know this won't make you feel better but it is a facility I want too so I can access my smartphone, tablet and cameras! And since I run The Utility Factory I should be able to get what I want.!

Wish I could say when it will be released but the testing hasn't gone far enough yet to say - and we want to make it future proof, i.e. work with other devices in the future.

Thanks,
Dexrter

1a is correct, we don't charge for point releases.

1b. 4 should be released about a year from now, though probably a bit more than that. We definitely dream here about V4, V5 and beyond.

But more than that the 3.x releases will contain a lot of new things and facilities over the next year: Version 3 was a rewrite of much of the major modules to that new features can be added more easily and with greater confidence and these will come out during the next year.

Talk about dreaming, Version 7 will allow you to just think about finding / copying / renaming a file and FileBoss will do it - even if the computer isn't turned on. Of course that will have to wait for technology that I hope somebody else is dreaming of. :-)

Q2. As you use PLiMUS is it possible & how do I go about: 2a: buying a License for myself but not with the CreditCardHolder's name as displayed on my credit card?
2b: buying a License As A Gift for a relative or close friend?

We will be gradually shifting away from Plimus over the next month or two. But for either question just let us know either before or after the purchase and we will be happy to change the license string for you. We don't do it now as when we tried it before with our automatic licesnse generation all sorts of junk showed up where the license string should be.

Thanks,
Dexter

Dexter Bell Ian G asked:

Resolving issues is a very selfish attitude. FileBoss interacts an almost infinite combination of hardware platforms, versions of Windows and configurations of it all so that problems do arise and we try to solve them as quickly as possible. It is a fast changing environment and we are trying to stay ahead but sometimes we have to play catchup. I personally love support questions.

Dexter Bell Louis H asked:
"I am honestly looking for someone to sell me on this one.

That is really a hard question to answer since it really depends on what you need. If you need a toolbox with a bunch of tools to accomplish special tasks then there is no better than FileBoss (unless of course some other program as a specific tool that you need and FileBoss doesn't). In general FileBoss is aimed at doing heavy lifting for knowledgeable people with large file systems. So if a very simple file manger is for someone who doesn't use their file system much then FileBoss may not be the best choice.

If you shoot me an email at SupportTheUitlityFactory.com with specific things you need to do I'd be happy to let you know whether or not FileBoss can do that.

"Why do I need yet another File Manager?"
I keep asking that sort of question about bicycles, bowler hats and bottles of bourbon. And while I always answer myself with, "No", I still keep buying all three (perhaps just to annoy my wife).

Jan-Christoph Ihrens "If you need a toolbox with a bunch of tools to accomplish special tasks then there is no better than FileBoss (unless of course some other program as a specific tool that you need and FileBoss doesn't)."

Well, that's a brave statement, considering how sophisticated e.g. Directory Opus is. In the video I saw nothing I can't do with DOpus, and that's just merely scratching the surface of DOpus' capabilities. Could you tell me what I can accomplish with FileBoss that I can't with DOpus? I don't wear bowler hats, I barely drink alcohol, and because of my artificial legs I don't ride bicycles... ;-)

First I probably should not have been so flippant: it wasn't mean spirited just my fingers running ahead of my brain.

But I can't tell you what FileBoss can do that DOpus can not do because both can do so many things it would be difficult to do a complete comparison. If DOpus does what you need then that is the best for you. If FileBoss does what others need then FileBoss is best for them. Why can't I make a definitive comparison? Because there are over 200 pages on our website detailing the various things it can do and the ways it can be used. The video wasn't meant to explain all the tools but rather to demonstrate how to use the environment in which the tools can be used. (And I am no expert on DOpus nor any of the other file managers.)

There are a lot of great file managers available but as great as many of us not one, including FileBoss, is best for everyone.

Dexter

"...my other question was about whether the software can detect folder sizes and if we can sort by folder size."

My grandiose plan for this ran afoul of time. But here is the way to do it without going into all the details of creating virtual folders.

Once the virtusl folder has been created such as by a 'Search Long Filenames...' command from the main menu, right-click over any folder and select 'Folder Statistics' from near the bottom of the popup menu. The dialog that appears has panes for a number of different statistics, the two most interesting for this are 'Folder-In' and 'Folder-Below'.

This dialog will stay open until it is explicitly closed so as you click on different folders in the left window it update to show the stats for that folder.

Really kind of stupid of us that with all that data available it isn't available in the 'Size' column of the contents window on the right nor is is a sortable criteria. It will be soon.
