What are people saying about FlowHeater V3 Designer

TAPTRONIC I purchased FlowHeater V2 Designer just a few months ago.

I'd to go upgrade from "V2 Designer" to "V3 Designer + Batch"

Is this the only upgrade to V3 available?

Robert Stark Hi NC Buyer,

First of all thank you very much for purchasing FlowHeater. In case you purchased the Designer V2 Version via BitsDoYour this delivered license key is also valid for Designer Version V3.

Sorry, we do not offer upgrade or update options in this promotion. It’s now possible to buy a Batch only version on our website. Note: This option is more expensive than the full Designer+Batch version on BitsDuJour.

Steve Amos Consider the following scenario which has happened to us a few times.

We have a normal master-detail table relationship (say, a grocery store table containing a list of grocery stores as the master and an employee table containing the list of all the employees that work at that store).

A company policy change happens and now employees are no longer associated with an individual store but are qualified to float across many stores as needed.

So the normal master-detail table logical relationship between the grocery store and employee tables has to be replaced with the classic many-to-many relationship which sees the addition of a new table (usually called an "associative table") in between the already-existing grocery store and employee tables.

The changes that have to be made are:
1. For each store in the store table all of the employees that are related to that store in the employee table have to be located in the employee table and that relationship inserted into the new associative table.
2. When step 1 is completed (and only then), the foreign key in the employee table that points back to the grocery store table must be removed. Fortunately there is no formal "identifying relationship" between the store table and the employee table because they each have their own unique primary key.

Up until now, we have been writing custom C++ programs to help us implement such schema and data migrations. Continuing with this example, our plan would be to export the two affected tables into CSV's, read the entire employee table in order to build a complex memory structure containing the seek-able offsets into the CSV file of all the employees organized by store affiliation, and then chug through the exported store table a line at a time, searching the memory structure and writing the appropriate CSV file to implement the associative table as we go. The associative CSV file is then read into the database and the foreign key column is dropped from the employee table, the program added a unique primary key column w/data as it went, and the two foreign keys are added, and we're golden.

Can your product do this so we don't have to write such custom applications? It doesn't need to do it the same way, it just needs to be able to do it at all. Some description of a working approach would be nice.

We would not consider this a particularly unique case. Anytime anyone has to introduce a many-to-many relationship into an existing database, something like this transform would have to be accomplished.

(Note: if you're wondering why we do this with CSV files it's because it's blindingly fast. We can perform this transform on thousands or even millions of records in seconds using such text files rather than using all the overhead of a database engine, and many other advantages that I won't elaborate on for brevity's sake.)

Robert Stark Hi Steve,

I think it should be possible. Please post your request to our support forum (http://www.flowheater.net/forum/) and we could try to find a solution.

Sorry for the short answer to your long question but BitsDuJour isn’t the right platform to discuss complete solutions.

NOTE: The support forum is free of charge.

Steve Amos I was hoping for a "absolutely yes or your money back" answer to my question so that I could take advantage of today's offer. Then I could have bought the product with confidence, even if it didn't work out in the long run. And you didn't mention anything about honoring today's prices even if it took longer than today to get a working answer.

While ultimately getting an answer would be gratifying, the fact that I didn't get an actionable answer in time renders the discussion moot. A 60% more expensive positive answer wasn't what I was looking for.

Robert Stark Hi Steve
,
To say YES or NO depends on many things. It depends on the database, the table schema, the data and of course your knowledge and experience about FlowHeater. I think you agree with me that your purpose isn’t easy and this needs some preparation. We can help you to solve your requirements in our support forum but we do not create complete solutions for you.

Remark: You purchased a few months ago the Version 2.x. Like I wrote above this license key is also valid for Version 3.x. You do not need to purchase FlowHeater again.

Does Flowheater convert XLSX to DBF?
Aug 22 2013 at 12:08am Copy Link

Robert Stark Hi Chris,

Yes the current version is 3.1.2. You can use all V3 versions marked as 3.x.y

I’m afraid we do not offer a money back guarantee. You could test all functions in detail with the freeware version and we offer also a cost free support forum where we try to support you. Feel free to test it.

Robert Stark Hi Lupke,
XLSX files requires an additional Excel Installation (2007 or higher). DBF files are not supported directly. It’s possible to read and/or write into DBF (dBase III/4) files by using the FlowHeater OleDB Adapter but this is a bit tricky!

Paul joubert @Robert I too wish I could spend time trying out FlowHeater. Would it be possible to take say 1000 ocr-ed legal documents and create a loosely structured CSV file along the line of say:
eg: Doc # DOC-name page# Line# line-content
1 xyz123 1 1 lkjhoiuhkjhliulkij kjkj
1 xyz123 1 2 yrrererek, kkdjf ll
1 " " 3 ........
1 " x x etc ........
2 ABDeg 1 1 etc.

If page is a problem doc# name(ID) line# in doc/chapter/book is OK.
If yes do-able you got a deal and a potential distributor.

Robert Stark Hi Paul,
The batch module supports wildcards like *.txt and it’s possible to read all files and create one (or more) CSV output files at once. These are the strengthening of FlowHeater :-)

I see a problem with our OCR scanned files. By now I can’t say this should work or not, it depends how the data will be available in your OCR files. FlowHeater are only able to read “structured” text files and restricted “unstructured” text files. Could you describe the format of your OCR files a bit?

Paul joubert @ Robert OKay I've had a quick look @ flow heater & seem promising and certainly worth a try @ the price. Is the license per user or installation. If I have a laptop & desktop do I need two separate licenses etc.?
If I or my clients want to upgrade from on version to another is there an upgrade fee or is it a new version full purchase?

License) The license is usually per installation. Yes, you need two separate licenses for Desktop and Laptop.

Leo Zwart Wanneer komt de download beschikbaar ? Dit staat al dagen klaar maar komt maar niet.
Nov 1 2013 at 1:37am Copy Link

Robert Stark @Robert: There are some possible reasons.
1) Because the promotion isn’t active now the EU VAT doesn’t work. You could try the normal buy now from our website. If it’s here works you have to wait till the promotion became active.
2) The typed company name isn’t correct. You have to use the complete registered company name.

In case this stills don’t work please contact the share-it support.

@Watcher1924: for the 100% off promotion this is not allowed because the activation only works for the next 7 days no activation afterwards possible. For the offered 60% off “Designer+Batch” Version this is of course possible.

@Leo: You have to use English for conversations; I can’t read your language.

bvssunnydale Hi, I installed but I'm wondering if I should, per the software, "Request a registered version"? I clicked on that and it only links to the products (with prices) screen. There is an "Activate License" screen but it only calls up a field to type in a license #, which obviously I don't have. Is the software actually licensed and/or activated upon installation? It's not clear. Thanks for any help.

Roderick Nicolson This is quite confusing. You say in your spiel at the top of the page that: 'there’s no required setup, or even installation!' Yet, when explaining to Niels you say: 'The only difference is that you have to install and activate this version within 7 days.'
So which is it? Is the program portable or does it have to be installed on a computer like any other desktop program, and why the confusing contradiction?
Thanks.

You could start the software immediately; of course a setup is also available. In case you want to use the full Designer functionality you have to activate this copy on your computer by clicking “?-License” in the FlowHeater Designer menu bar. Hope it’s a bit clearer.
