What are people saying about Folder Scout Standard

Thomas Duntze Hello all,
according to the policy tab, Folder Scout is free for one month. Where is the difference between that - quite unusual - offer and the 30 day trial from the publishers website?

Paul Scout Hi Thomas,

I am Paul Scout, from Folder Scout Labs. You are right, but it is just a little mistake. The promotion includes a fully functional licensed copy of Folder Scout Standard Edition. It is not a 1 month trial. I have already contacted BDJ staff to change this ASAP.

DrTeeth One install per footprint is a problem. a) I multi boot and b) what happens if Windows throws a hissy fit and I have to reinstall? TBH, DRM stops me using even free programs.

Paul Scout Hi DrTeeth,

a) License is per computer. Multi boot is not a problem.
b) You can reinstall it. No problem. You only need to store your License Key in a safe place ;-)

Hope this helps.

DrTeeth Hi Paul,

Thanks for that. The policy on the right says 1 install per footprint though.

Can another file manager be used instead of windows explorer? I use Q-Dir, a four-pane freeware offering.

Paul Scout Hi again DrTeeth,

Yes, it is very simple. You can configure it under Options - Application Preferences - Applications - File Brower Application.

This allows many users to configure their preferred file manager (Xplorer2, Q-Dir, PowerDesk, Commander, etc.)

Paul Scout Hi All,

What about a contest ? There will be a FREE Folder Scout Professional License for the user with highest number of folders cataloged using Folder Scout.

Personally I hold about 120,000 folders but I know about some users with over 200,000 folders.

Who wants to play ?

(Under Folder Scout, you can see your total number of cataloged folders in the ‘Catalog-Add/Refresh Drive Catalog’ window.)

_*_ Norton will not allow this download to remain on the hard drive; once downloaded it deletes the file and gives a warning.

I am unsure if it is due to so few downloads or that it is an .exe file.

Anyone else have this problem?

Paul Scout Hi MB,

I am not a Norton software expert but have been informed about similar behavior. See the note below:

" ... Symantec’s File Insight (SONAR) program was recently added to the Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security programs. SONAR automatically deletes or quarantines any program it believes may be malware... "

Please read carefully the warning message you have mentioned to have more info. Regarding Folder Scout, it has been in the market since 2007 and passed hundreds of anti-virus test without problems. See the report below as an example:

Rich Ackerson Hi Paul,

I'll join in that contest. I picked up a copy of Folder Scout Pro recently (and I love it, by the way) and was planning to pick up another copy. I just cataloged my folders and the total shows as 166,767 folders. This is spanning the 10 drives on my workstation

I will be happy to email you a screenshot if you require proof.

Rich Ackerson @Praveen. I just tried this with my Folder Scout Pro installation. I created the folders A, 1, A1, and 1A.

FS correctly recognized them all on my Win7 64bit system.

If you installed FS and then added the folders you may wish to refresh your catalog and try again.

Note, I am not affiliated with Scout Labs. Just a happy user.

David Gilmour Hi Paul,

Have you considered extending Folder Scout's functionality to make it a file scout as well?

While Windows 7's search function is much improved compared to previous versions of Windows, I still find it too resource intensive. I use Copernic Desktop Search for finding files based on content, but CDS is far too heavy and slow of a tool for a quick lookup and jump to a file location by filename. The best solution that I have found for locating files by name, which handles both local and network file locations, is the freeware application "Locate32," but it is no longer being actively developed. It still works though, and so I rely on it, at least until I find something better. My current Locate32 database reports 2,910,172 filenames and 660,821 foldernames indexed for my local system and on my networked file server. This index covers just a select set of folders that I need to be indexed. I'm a professional photographer, so the vast majority of these folders contain image files and data from photography projects completed over the last few years.

Based on my evaluation of Folder Scout Standard so far today, its interface is more attractive and informative than that of the applications that I have been using for quick file and folder locating, and I like how the application has been designed with the intent of helping to streamline common file handling tasks. If only it indexed file names too.

For the purposes of your contest today, when I have it index all of my local partitions (including system folders that I wouldn't normally index), Folder Scout reports 639,766 folders catalogued.

Cheers,

David

Paul Scout Hi David Gilmour,

Thanks for you detailed message.

I am taking note of the scores. Being in 1st place is becoming harder and harder...

Regarding your question, I always wanted to keep Folder Scout simple and fast. I think these are two important characteristics. While keeping this two features, the right answer is: Yes, it is very probable in the near future to add file indexing function, as being suggested by many users.

Praveen Kumar Thanks Rick and Paul,
Let me be more clearer. In the Find Folder window, the one at the bottom with a check box for Whole words only, it looks like a minimum of 3 letters are required to locate a folder. Hence a folder like 0 or XL having only 2 letters is not being located.

May be I will rename to make it more understandable :) Yeah, I like Folder Scout Thanks!

Paul Scout @Praveen,

You are welcome. Now it's absolutely clear.

By the way, you can modifiy this going to:

Paul Scout @Kelly Major,

Sure there is some misunderstood here. As description says " Even if you do some housekeeping and change folder names, Folder Scout Standard will automatically track these changes and account for them in your next search!"

Folder Scout runs in the background an event driven multithreaded engine, working together with Windows internals to keep folder tree automatically updated as you create, modify or delete folders.

Both editions include the same engine and it is fully functional.

Scheduled auto-scan is used in conjunction with Network Remote catalogs on LAN environments, usually in the machine acting as Server. This allows fail-safe and faster updates in the server to allow every client machine retrieve the latest catalog.

No marketing here !

Fortunately I haven't uninstalled yet and now I won't be. I look forward to using the product and will pass along this generous offer to my colleagues.

Allan Winston I had the same problem as M B and Leslie Milburn caused by Norton being overly conservative about a download with few users
They call the threat "WS.Reputation.1". I circumvented the problem by using Norton Security History, double-clicking the item, and specifying that I wanted the EXE file to be restored from Quarrantine.
I was then able to double-click the file and install the software.

Steven Avery Thanks. The fact that you can be the front-end to searching for Xplorer2, (and Q-Dir and others) makes this worth a real try out. In the long-run, if you do not have now, Total Commander (and xyplorer) would be very nice too.

Paul Scout @J S,

Well, all business are based on marketing campaigns, Spring Sale, Coupons and so on. They are many factors when setting a price...

On the other hand, don't forget we have new pricing since April 1st. During GOTD promo, Folder Scout Pro was at $29,95. Now it costs $19,95 for BDJ users. So it is 10$ less, PLUS 30% OFF.

David Gilmour It sure is, Roger!

A lot of those folders were created, not by me, but by applications that I use, and as such, they don't contain information that needs to be indexed with an application like Folder Scout, because they're only used by the application that created them. For example, some photograph collection browsing applications create caches for thumbnails and previews in a nested folder structure.

Adobe Lightroom is the worst offender. About 300,000, or around 50%, of the folders on my local drives were created by Lightroom for thumbnail and preview caches of my various Lightroom catalogues. I find LR to be an indispensable tool for image processing, but the mess of folders that it creates can obviously be a burden to the system and can choke applications that try to navigate them, such as backup applications. So to prevent problems, I routinely have to exclude these folder trees from being crawled by such applications.

If I were to subtract system-generated and application-generated folders from the count, and get down to just the folders that I create for my source materials, I STILL have a LOT of folders .. some would call it hoarding, but they just don't get it :-) .. and I have little doubt that I still would have easily won yesterday's contest. :-)

Hi. I have some questions. If you cannot answer directly please provide some links about them. Have in mind that I have already searched a little at your site and the offline help but didn't make it. Also when I use the index section of the help and type a key word and press enter nothing happens.

a) Which version exactly is this (because I have 1.3.1 and maybe I shoudn't download)?
b) Can we use it as portable and how?
c) While the program scans a drive it shows the number of the folders increasing but as soon as it finishes I cannot find a way to see that number, thus right now I don't know how many folders I have. How can I do it?

b) Current version is not portable.I haven't tried it but perhaps some utilitites in the market could convert Folder Scout automatically to make it portable (google: portable app convert) . If you make it work successfully, please let us know.

c) Once in Folder Scout, you can see your total number of cataloged folders in the ‘Catalog-Add/Refresh Drive Catalog’ window.

naveed Paul, very nice program, thank you. A few suggestions:

1. Down & Up arrow should be able to make selections from the searched results, without have to click Tab
2. Shortcuts to quickly select the first few results using either the number keys or the function keys - you will need to show the numbers next to the results
3. The ability to change the shortcuts in the results list for Explore, Command Prompt, etc
4. The ability to change the font size and colors - I'd really like to see a black background with white text

Keep up the great work

David H (Seattle) Suggestion: allow integration with dialog boxes in other apps, as does Listary, and you'd have a killer plug-in. Being a separate app limits the utility; Listary is integrated. Listary has limitations that Folder Scout gets around, so the combination would be awesome! I would buy FS Pro if this were added.

big-red Been using Folder Scout since the last promo. I find my folders lightning fast, then send them to XYPlorer. Works well.

A minor niggle - when using the search box - Folder Scout remembers the last search entry, so have to clear / delete the box before entering another.

Maybe a clear search box button? Or an option to start with a empty entry box each time the window is maximised.

Paul, If there's already an easy way, please comment!

J S Q1. If somebody paid the higher prices or a discounted price based on Your original $29.95 price per license (before you introduced you current pricing policy of $19.95): Are those people entitled - or have You considered offering, a free upgrade to version 2.x, OR, is the fact that those people paid a higher price for their Professional software license just ''tough luck''?

Q2. Have you considered offering a Family pack (allowing perhaps either 3 or 5 PC hardware footprints)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

* Each license allows installation on a single computer and a laptop, and Folder Scout Standard may be used at exactly the same time on each of them.
* Transfer of a license to another owned computer is allowed.
* Email license activation is required with a hardware footprint, and 1 installation per footprint.

Q3. If - as the BdJ Policy box advises, a person is entitled to install this program (or the Pro version?) on both a Desktop and a Laptop then is the "... 1 installation per footprint. ..." correct or am I missing something in understanding it correctly?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This is a minor point but I cant see any mention in the BdJ Policy Section or the License Agreement mentioned in the BdJ Policy box [http://www.folderscout.co...eement.htm] advising about Your Minor Updates or Major Upgrades Policy.

Q4. Would you care to explain your Updates & Upgrades Policy?

I presume that You're selling a license that requires a Purchase for Upgrade (either at full or discounted price) to next version ie: v1.x to v2.x

Folder Scout Standard works on multiple drives (Fixed or Removable) simultaneously and can index as many drives as you want. We have users with ten or more drives and over 600.000 folders !

If you also want to search in Network drives, you need Folder Scout Professional.

Current version does not support regular expressions.

You can use special delimiter colon (:) as an AND condition for the terms that match in folder name. This allows easy search using two or more terms, no matter which order they appear inside the folder name.

Paul Scout Folder Scout is specialized in folder search, not file search, although you can define a File Search App in the same manner you define a File Browser, under Options - Application Preferences - Applications - File Search Application.

Future versions will include filters like '*.doc or *.pdf under Recent Files tab, as suggested by many users.

Paul Scout @Retired Engineer,

You can exclude drive categories by group (Network, Removable or Fixed) and also any drive individually. I am sorry but current version indexes each drive completely so there is no way to exclude a certain folder.

Of course if several users find useful excluding custom selected folders it could be included in next releases.

Nov 16 2012 at 10:01am Copy Link

Paul Scout @Retired Engineer,

Scheduled Autoscan is used in conjunction with Network Remote catalogs on LAN environments, usually in the machine acting as Server (Professional Edition can be installed in a LAN Server to achieve better performance). This allows fail-safe and faster updates in the server to allow every client machine retrieve the latest catalog.

Event Log File allows Administrators to inspect and monitor the behavior of Server, detecting warnings or errors during automated server scan proccess.

Re: your reply on file filtering. The great strength of Folder Scout is exactly the fact that it specialises in Folder search conly, not files or file content. Paul Scout @Amit,

We try to make it as simple as possible: Each license allows installation on a single computer and a laptop. This applies to those cases where one home user (not for business user) owns two PC's at home and we consider that buying two licenses for this typical case is not necessary. If two persons are using two computers at different locations day after day, we are talking about two different licenses.

Paul Scout @R. Atkins, @ Bruno Verschraegen

Windows 7 (and 8) built into Find functionality is a heavy resource consumption software engine aimed to scan file system and file content. In many cases, this engine can take almost 100% of your CPU and Memory depending on your system configuration.

Folder Scout is aimed for users that just want to jump on a known folder name but unknown folder path, with almost 0% CPU and system resources consumption.

As mentioned by user Bruno Verschraegen on previous comments: "The great strength of Folder Scout is exactly the fact that it specialises in Folder search only, not files or file content. In most cases, just hit F7 and start typing the part of a name that you remember or that is most relevant for your folder search - and bang up come the folders you're looking for. Just great. "

FS Standard is free today and fully functional. Support is also provided for current subscriptions. As you mentioned, the only difference with a commercial license is about free updates policy.

Of course, this does not applies to Folder Scout Professional with 50% OFF today, that includes free updates.

Paul Scout @loving thesixties,

Today there are dozens of file/folder search apps available, including File Search built into Windows itself (XP / 7 / etc).
Which software is “the best” ? The one that saves you more time , makes you more productive and makes your life a little bit easier. Many people find Folder Scout well suited for their everyday folder navigation routine or like Recent Folders & Recent Docs approach or find very useful the Export Utility or Favorites, etc.

Is Folder Scout your application? You have the answer. It depends on your working habits, the way you organize your stuff and other hundreds of factors.

Just try it. For a day, a week or whatever. It's Free today !

Paul Scout @internet explorer,

Regarding the search utility "everything" (Although I'm not an expert), one should be aware, that "everything" does not search files and folders on non-NTFS volumes, e.g. it would not find data at fat/fat32 formatted usb-sticks, sd-cards, mp3-players, harddisks, linux NAS sytems (Samba, etc) or network shared drives on LAN or WAN environments. That is, Everything exploits perfectly a "by design" intrinsic feature of a particular file system (NTFS) but does not works out of this scope.

Folder Scout works with any type of data storage, local or remote, Windows or Linux file servers, without any dependence on the file system itself.

Is Folder Scout your application? It depends on your working habits, the way you organize your stuff and other hundreds of factors.

big-red Paul - I got your standard version on the last BDJ promo. I use it every day. To me the fact that it only searches folders is a benefit, helping to find folders VERY quickly without having to sort through thousands of individual files as well.

I'm purchasing the pro version, not because I need it, but to support your software. Cheers.

internet explorer Thank you for the useful additional info; it really helps me see that it's better to get today's offer even though I already have Everything. I do have one more question however, namely, some people above say FSS only helps with folders, not files, but the blurb about it, also above, says: "Folder Scout Standard gives you instant access to any drive, folder, OR FILE on your computer" (emphasis added); so who is right, does it or does it not find files as well as folders?

a) About this one installation we get to have, can we do it later or only during the promotion period?
b) Let's suppose we are going to scan a hard disk of 160 GB, practicly full. How much free space does the program need (except the programe folder) and where do these data files reside?

Prior to the reboot, it was listed as 'trial version' in title bar & I had option of getting HELP - Register. SINCE the reboot, it now says ' Standard Version' -- but I cannot get a place to register the registration number.

Paul Scout @internet explorer,

Folder Scout is a folder search tool, although you can associate it with any file search tool. Folder Scout will launch it when you select 'Search Files in his folder', using right mouse button over any folder. By default, Windows Search is launched but users can configure any other file search engine, like Everything or others. Additionally, Recent Docs tab also helps you finding files.

a) You get a valid license code so you can install the software at any time, during or after the promotion period.

b) Well, it depends on the number of folders you have on that 160 GB drive. An approximate figure could be a 4 MB index file per 100.000 folders. You can see this index file path for each drive going to 'Catalog - Add/Refresh Drive Catalog - Advanced Drive Info.

You can also see your total number of cataloged folders in the ‘Catalog-Add/Refresh Drive Catalog’ window.

Ernest Kennedy I purchased the pro edition in mid 2012 and can honestly say it is one of my favourite apps, I would advise anyone to get this deal, you won't regret it.
I have 4 partitions in my notebook laptop and well over 3 million files acroos all partitions and this app can give me almost instant access to any file on any partition irrespective of how deep the folder/file structure goes, really speaking the only delay experienced is it takes me longer to type even just a part of a file/folder name to search for and for me the program search speed is awesomely fast. Once you give it a drive to catalogue keep the program running in the system tray for quick access to any file/folder on the catalogued drives.
Good luck everyone and enjoy this awesome app.

BTW, I'm a fellow BDJ user and am not affiliated to the vendor of this app, I'm just a very satisfied customer.

Phred E Voidtools is working from here..
Hi Paul, Perhaps you could contrast this with '(Search) Everything'.
Everything does need administrative rights to operate, and I suspect your program doesn't - so, safer.
But in what context does Folder Scout work? Is it just a version of Win Explorer, or does it act as a more versatile Open or Save dialogue box, or in some other way?
Using a mouse in a GUI is an 'analogue' kind of operation: think through your arm, and your mouse pointer moves on-screen. But in Windows 8 the 'type anywhere' meme is only valuable to touch typists: think out through your fingertips and the result comes up on the screen. Your program seems to act in the same way - conscious typing.
For people who look at the keyboard, typing is a distraction. Unless typing is subconscious, typing letters is more of a nuisance than using your arm and fingers to making things work analoguely(?) on-screen with a mouse.
Am I interpreting your software correctly? Thx.

Brian De Bragança 'The Fine Print' says to download the software immediately as it will "not be available after the promotion".

Does this mean it must also be installed and activated immediately (or at least before the end of the promotion)?

'The Fine Print' also says that only one installation per footprint (and, I presume, activation) is allowed. Does this mean that the software cannot be re-installed and/or re-activated after, say, a future OS crash or any time in the future?

Please clarify this.

Olivier Gebuhrer Bits du Jour came to me in some magical way ; no idea of how it came on my PC ; however in at least two circumstances I have to declare the extraordinary choice made here ; really this is an opportunity for extreme congratulations for the choices ; first is Directory Opus 10 which I highly recommend as replacement of Windows Explorer; true , Windows explorer has greatly improved since the first versions but Directory Opus is a Jewel ; believe me I tried others ; none is performing , nice to browse , quick as that one which allows a lot of features that other do also ore or less ; here no surprises no bugs no nothing ; perfect . Same is true of FolderScout ; I bought Pro version and really what it does is amazing ; My English is to poor and I will not try to elaborate but comparatively with the absurd search tool in windows this tool is extraordinary ; Only one remark: this tool is sophisticated ; for simple or elementary configurations it is of almost no use but for elaborate configs this is something !!!!!!!!!! best regards Fantastic job

Brian De Bragança Further clarification needed:

'The Fine Print' says only one activation per footprint.

Does this mean that if you have a dual-boot setup - e.g. Win7 and Win8 - in two separate partitions on the same hard disk, you must have two separate licences or can you use the same licence for both if you don't also use a laptop?

VLM Ernest Kennedy - Thank you, I find your comments most helpful. It is particularly encouraging to know that FS reaches all the way down a deep hierarchy and that its performance seems \unaffected by size.

Srikanth Nadindla - Are you suggesting Everything because you believe it is complementary to Folder Scout, or because you think one might use it as a free alternative to Folder Scout?

Paul Scout - I never realized that the name came from a person's name. Always something new. :) I am curious ... Can FS be set up to find ANY string in a name, or must it always start from top-of-name? Thanks!

Everyone - Does anyone have experience using both Listary and Folder Scout. My impression is that they overlap in functionality, but I wonder whether they might also be complementary in nature. I say the latter, because Listary works using shortcuts, whereas Folder Scout works using name snippets.

Paul Scout @VLM,

The search substring can be in any position inside the target folder name.

You can also use special delimiter colon (:) as an AND condition for the terms that match in folder name. This allows easy search using two or more substrings, no matter which order they appear inside the folder name.

Please, correct me if have not understood it right. An example could also help.

Elizabeth Bright I have a Win 7 Pro (x64) desktop, a MacBookPro (10.6?), a Buffalo NAS (multiple shares) and an older HP Home Server, which the Buffalo is ultimately replacing. I am very interested with the Pro version after looking at the v1.3 architecture imprvements. A few questions before though:
1) I understand that this software can't run on a Mac but if I can reach the MBP through my network can I have it indexed for search functionality?
2) Can the centralized 'server' index be stored on the NAS?
3) Can systems or USB drives be indexed if only attached intermittently? (Like old laptops, thumb drives, etc to help discover old files)
* If they are indexed while attached, would the information be saved/accessible when the device is offline for reference too?
4) I am assuming for all of this, it's just storing an index and not trying to store a copy of all the data 'offline' somewhere (a limit of Searching Network drives from a Mac), but can you please confirm this?
5) Can you delete/manipulate files within the program? (For deleting duplicates or moving data around perhaps)

Thank you!
Elizabeth

Paul Scout @ Elizabeth Bright,

Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks for inaugurating this Folder Scout deal !

I will try to answer all your questions in order.

1) You are right. If you can see the MBP drive on your network, you can index and search it using Folder Scout.

2) In theory, any index file (it is a .XML file) could be stored in the NAS but the NAS can't run Folder Scout (Windows .exe). You will need a Windows PC to act as Folder Scout server to keep the index file updated. The typical scheme should be using a Windows PC that indexes any non Windows local or network drive (like NAS, Macs, Linux, etc).

3) You can use USB drives without any problem. Unfortunately, current release will not search on them when the device is offline. This feature has been requested by several user and will be included in next releases.

4) That's true. What Folder Scout stores is and index file per drive cataloged (an XML file, as mentioned before) . So (fortunately) Folder Scout only stores an index file, not all the data.

5) Folder Scout does not include this feature. File and Folder operations should be executed from Windows File Explorer or any other file manager. Folder Scout allows you to choose you favorite alternative file manager.

Bruno Verschraegen Using FolderScout daily since one and a half years and very happy with it. Took me a while to aqcquire the reflex to simply hit F7 and tyoe in part of the folder name I was searching for but it is such a relief to be able to only search for folder names - and not having folders, files (and even content) all mixed together in search results.

One of the best uses for it is actually searching in IE Favorites. I have 2'120 folders in my favorites (with almost 33'000 favorites). They are rather well structured (as an event management company we rely much on web research and structured bookmarks) but wading through favorites from within IE can pe painstaking. Much faster to type F7 and a word you know has to be in the folder name. And once you have (quickly) accessed the right folder this way, you can still run a regular explorer search within the folder if needing help with finding the right file/favorite. Also great for restructuring your folders.

No-one serious about being productive on their computer should be without this programme. And no, I am not affiliated in any way to the developers or the company. Just a big fan.

Mary Wilson Like the program and got the standard version which I do like and got it. It will take some time to understand the program, but my favorite part so far is the fact that all I have to do is hit F7 for it to come up. Although I do have a couple of questions. Will we get a activation key for this version as mine still says trial version. Going to the website, I looked and found a comparison of Professional and Standard and found that the only differences between Standard and Professional is Network drives supported, network remote catalogs, Even Log File and Scheduled Autscan. I am not worried about Network as I am on standalone. Could not find much informaiton on Event Log File and Scheduled AutoScan.

Paul Scout @ Mary Wilson,

Thanks for sharing with us your experience with Folder Scout !

Sometimes I believe that many users did not catch the F7 trick before uninstalling the program and forgetting it. Of course, having to click with the mouse two or three times for Folder Scout to come to front makes the application less attractive.

And now, let's go with the answers:

Scheduled Autoscan is used in conjunction with Network Remote catalogs on LAN environments, usually in the machine acting as Server (Professional Edition can be installed in a LAN Server to achieve better performance). This allows fail-safe and faster updates in the server to allow every client machine retrieve the latest folder catalog.

Event Log File allows Administrators to inspect and monitor the behavior of Server, detecting warnings or errors during automated server scan proccess.

Kenneth Bates As reported above, I installed the PRO version yesterday but I am rather concerned about one of the license stipulations. My computer is configured as a multi-boot system and (as is my normal practise) I installed it on Vista (32x). I would, however, require to install it for Linux, Win 7 (32x and 64x) in addition. Would I be required to purchase extra licenses in order to do this?

Ralph Bressler Bought the professional version earlier this year. Found I didn't use it much and uninstalled. Changed to Windows 7 Home premium. Reinstalled due to this offer. Installed and cataloged fine. Problem is that when I use the program it "hangs" Windows Explorer about every other time I use it. Thought it was external drives but hung while going to a folder on the C drive. Any thoughts? I am about ready to uninstalled it again!

DrTeeth @ Kenneth Bates

The licence clearly says 'per computer'. It does not say 'per OS'. All my PCs multiboot and I have found only *one* software company where 'per computer' does not mean that (limits to 2 installs per PC).

That company features regularly on BdJ.

Martin Janda Downloaded the file but my Win Explorer says the file is corrupted. Attempted to redownload - 'Too many downloads from this link error' popped up. Tried to download a trial instal from the app's homepage and ended up with a 'Corrupted' mesage again. Giving up.

Is this correct? Can I use the serial on 2 computers?

Jiri Hroch @joan collins Yes, of course, it is also a kind of solution. The question is why FolderScout does not make it automatically.Other programs do it without problems. Maybe my good, old, brave XP SP3 is sometimes tired and not doing his job 100% .... Thank you for your help!

Paul Scout @Thomas Duntze,

Hi Thomas,

1) You can install and reinstall it at any time. No problem. You only need to store your License Key in a safe place ;-)

2) Current version only includes English language.

Hope this helps.

Peter Martin May I suggest usb version where you can use the program without installing and thus not using any of the computers resources ( at least not permanently) and where you can catalog files or folders from say 5 different computers and save then in the usb and find almost instantly which computer/s the file is found and maybe even tell the latest version

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the comments. User suggestions are always welcome.

A Portable Edition for Folder Scout and Offline Folder Search both sound as good candidates to be implemented in next releases.

SKY Hello Paul,
Looking at your comparison table, does it mean that with today's free offer (Standard), I will not be able to look up any of my data files (ie. 95% of all my data) in my external HDD? If true, which would render today's offer useless to me, can I upgrade to Pro, (after I install the Standard) for say. $5 ? :) Thank you for an affirmative reply.
Regards...

PS: I wont tell anyone, if you make it a one-time offer. :)

Paul Scout @ Serhan K. Yasar,

Fortunately that's not the case ! Standard Edition works perfectly with USB External Drives. Professional Edition also includes support for NETWORK DRIVES (Shared Drives through LAN, WAN, Linux NAS, etc).

DrTeeth This is a very useful app on which development seems to have stopped. Last updated 16th June 2012. So "includes free updates for all 1.X version" is as much use as a chocolate fireguard. I paid for the pro version.

It has a confirmed (by the dev) bug that makes it very annoying for me to use - it will NOT remember its last window size or position, nor will it co-operate with a utility that I use to get Windows 7 to remember windows sizes and positions.

CJCotter From a previous BitsDuJour offer, I currently have Version 1.3.2 build 217 from June 2012. What a great program! I have over 500GB of digital "stuff" on a SATA external storage drive. So much so, that I've lost all track of where everything is, in spite of my best efforts to organize it. Enter Folder Scout. All I have to do is enter part of a folder name that I think that it is, Folder Scout pulls up all of the folders where that can be found. Then I click on the link, and it takes me right there. Now I can't live without it.

Peter Martin, above, is concerned about Folder Scout "...not using any of the computers resources". It doesn't. It just sits there in the clock tray. Task manager shows a "00" CPU usage. The only time it uses computer resources is when you refresh Folder Scout's drive catalog, when you click on one of the folder links.

Hope this helps.

Paul Scout @DrTeeth,

You are right, but I am still here !!. Development hasn't stopped but certainly delayed. I have got twins two years ago - exactly on June 8th, 2012....

Apart from some known bugs (like "remember window size and position") and some others unknown ;-), the application runs smoothly and many people like it. Anyone can give it a try for free (like today), and use it. If it makes your life easier, just enjoy it !

Congratulations on the twins. I can see your future - I have two teenagers. The window size/position thing makes 'Scout too annoying for me to use. Once it is fixed, I'm sure I will be a convert.

Nigel Blumenthal Hi Paul:

Just downloaded the free version, which looks very useful (although I have a suggestion for enhancement). However, what I'm looking for is a chart of the differences between Standard and Professional. Is there such a chart readily available?

Thanks,

Nigel

Nigel Blumenthal Thanks, Paul: Just a couple of questions - given that the free version already connects with my external hard drive, what's the difference between an external drive and a networked drive? Also (and this was the enhancement I had in mind) is it possible to name and save a catalogue? I use a laptop in two different locations, so I'd like to have one catalogue for the laptop, and one extra one for each of the NAS drives attached to the router in our two homes so that, if I'm in Location A, I can see whether I've got the directory I need to store files, or whether it only exists in Location B. The issue is that both NAS drives may or may not use the same drive letter (maybe Z: or Y:) but obviously there's no conflict since I'm only ever attached to one at a time. So having a catalogue for each location would be really useful.

Thanks,

Nigel

Paul Scout @Nigel Blumenthal

Hi Nigel,

Q1) A Networked Drive usually resides on another PC or Server (Windows, Linux or any other) who shares its Local Drive through a Local Area Network. This environment is quite common in companies and recently is also becoming pupular in homes for users with several PCs, Multimedia Server, etc.

Q2) Yes, but this is managed automatically by Folder Scout internals, using XML files. In any case, if you want I can give you more details to check if what you want can be done. Please write me to support@folderscout.com to talk about this subject. Regarding dirve letters, this is not an issue considering Folder Scout internally manages disk drives by its Serial Number or IP Address.

Paul Scout @Keith Quarles,

Hi Keith,

Folder Scout has been fully tested under Windows 7 for 32 & 64 bits editions, but only partially tested under Windows 8, initially without problems.

Will be very pleased if anyone could share with us any experience under Windows 8/Windows 8,1 32 and/or 64 bits editions.

Nigel Blumenthal Hi Paul:

I've gone ahead and purchased the Pro version and received a registration key, but the key doesn't seem to be working - the "OK" button is greyed out and the only option is to exit the registration screen. Can you help please/ Thanks, Nigel

PS: I'll be in touch with you over the support issue we discussed earlier. Thanks.

Paul Scout @Nigel @Chandig,

Please confirm you downloaded Folder Scout install program from Folder Scout Web Site and not from link provided by Bits Du Jour. Functionality is 100% identical, but today installer is tailored for BDJ and does not accept Professional registration codes.

You cand download it here: http://www.folderscout.co...0Trial.htm

2. Once installed and running, Go to Folder Scout Main Menu -> Help -> Register, and paste your COMPLETE Registration Key.

3. Press OK button .. and enjoy !!!
