S B FolderSizes Pro looks like well-conceived, powerful software, and is apparently actively being developed; it looks nice. (Key Metric also makes the great Duplicate File Detective [which I enjoy] which is the best of its category)

For years I've happily used the highly-recommended grand-daddy of this category, JAM Software's TreeSize Pro (network admins use that company's automated, database-based SpaceObServer).

FolderSizes Pro's power seems similar to that of TreeSize Personal (a smidgen cheaper than this offer) or Professional.

How does FolderSizes Pro compare with TreeSize Pro?

Thanks!

Software Guy Very powerful software. Directory Opus fans will like the power of this software. This is really designed to watch network computer usage, so many users may not need all of this power for their disk space reporting needs. As an example, most users don't need snapshots of disk usage in the past. If you just want to see what is on your disk, or use basic filters to sort old files by date and size (as an example), the graphical utility (portable) spacesniffer is free
http://www.uderzo.it/main...e_sniffer/
check out the videos at their site

and directory report does much of the same AND much of the work of key metric's other utility - duplicate file detective - for cheap
http://www.file-utilities.com/ please have a look at their videos. cutting graphical interface? - no but good basic file manipulation including user and size reporting

Another optiion - spacesniffer and a duplicate file finder may work well to manage space for many users. Several excellent utilities have been offered here in the past. Also remember that glary utilities is a free and powerful duplicate file finder http://www.glarysoft.com/...utilities/
and has within it many other great utilities - if you do not already know about it please check it out.

Roberto great tools. I use spacesniffer, but ill switch to foldersizes.

duplicate file detective is another great tool from keymetric, totally recomended.

both tools helped me to make a good cleaning of my hard disks.

a good complement to this ones is "search everything" from void tools.

policy is great too.

ill buy this one :)

Key Metric Software Hello folks,

> How does FolderSizes Pro compare with TreeSize Pro?

It's difficult for a software company to be objective with regard to such comparisons, so I would ultimately urge users to try both products and see which best suits their needs.

FolderSizes has a large user base that includes most of the largest companies in the world. I believe they choose FolderSizes over competing products for many reasons - including performance, usability, and features (email support, calculated date/time fields, etc.).

Speaking of features, here's one worth noting - FolderSizes has *native* 64-bit support. Many competing products are 32-bit applications, period. They will run on 64-bit operating systems using the Windows WOW64 emulator, but they will never have the scalability and performance characteristics of true, native 64-bit applications.

In cases where a feature in FolderSizes is similar to that of a competing product, our goal is simple - do it better, and let users decide whether or not we've succeeded.

> many users may not need all of this power for their disk space reporting needs

Absolutely, FolderSizes is *not* designed to compete with simpler freeware solutions. The goal is to offer a lot more power (scheduling, email integration, numerous export options, XML snapshots, comparison support, etc.) for a reasonable price that includes technical support and continuous product improvements.

bob roos I was very impressed with this program. It looks very complete. One thing I didn't see (and have asked the author for) is saving of the details of all the files and then producing the reports (largest, by name.....) from the saved data.

I hope the deal pops soon.

Staley Tried the trial and I can't wait... looks like a really nice product. Especially since Raxco PerfectDisk 12 Pro just took the disk consumption tools out of their feature list. (Which I am not saying is good or bad. It's a defrag utility anyway...)

One question, can one change/skin the map graph? (The mode with all the boxes.) Since with them all shades blue that are close to each other, it's hard to make out the data compared to higher contrasted maps like in SpaceSniffer and TreeSize Pro (which I tried for the first time also.)

I like TreeSize Pro colorful 3D mode and SpaceSniffer has a easier (however not as pretty as FolderSizes Pro or TreeSize Pro (blue is one of my favorite colors, next to red...)

Being able to select the color set or range would be a cool and useful option for the map mode...

Key Metric Software Hi Staley,

One question, can one change/skin the map graph?

You have good timing; we're working on on this right now. We'll be providing a set of color palettes that can be applied to all the graphs shown in the product (not just the folder map).

In fact, we'll probably release this update later today. Please download the latest release tomorrow morning (the day of the BDJ promotion) and see if the new graph palettes suit your needs. If not, email us at supportfolderSizes.com and we'll work on it with you.

Staley Mark,
I tried the new release. It's better, but it would be nice if you could select the different colors/create custom color schemes. Like making the drive type grey, the folder type blue, the file type red, etc...

Basically like what SpaceSniffer can do...

Thanks again for the feedback. We have a host of improvements planned for the folder map view in upcoming releases, and we'll definitely look at adding some color customizations along these lines (e.g. different colors for different file system object types).

Richard Andersen I must say I find the license policy a bit confusing:

"Licensed per user for non-concurrent use only, allowing transfer of a license to another owned computer."

The first part seem to indicate that one user can install and use one license on more than one computer, as long as he only use it on one computer at time, and no one else uses the program.

The second part seems to indicate that one license can be installed on one computer only.

Could you perhaps clarify a bit?

Peter B. who can say something about the most important differences between Treesize professional and Foldersizes professional? Just a little help to buy the right one of these two. They both work good, but there might be some advantages or disadvantages between the two I overlooked.

Experience @Peter
Maintenance for TreeSize are 12 months & FolderSizes are by major version.
http://www.foldersizes.co...eNotes.htm

You could visit there and do the math.

FolderSizes have native 64bit support which TreeSize do not have and vice versa TreeSize have support for portable installation which FolderSizes don't have. (Portable installation of FolderSizes would be nice Mark)

Personally I've integrated FolderSizes with Directory Opus using it's commandline options which works great.

bob roos I am officially an licensee. This is really a well thought out program, Mark.

Is there an option to save the details for each file found? I have a large NAS and FS gave me the scoop on the folders. I would love to have a list of all the files and their paths so I could write a program to search that list to locate files quickly on the NAS. Search Everything doesn't work on network drives.

Also if you saved the details of each file, would that not make the special reports faster rather than re-searching?

Thanks Bob roos

bob roos I just discovered I can get exactly what I wanted with a file list (well up to 1,000,000 files). Specify the oldest file report, change the number of files to be displayed to 1,000,000 and then export the results to a tab delimited file.

Thanks again for a great (and flexible) program.

Michael R. Just downloaded the demo and played around a little with it... Seems to be a very powerful asset...

An interesting thing are the command-line-options which would allow to embed the program into a batch-file. But when trying these out, e.g. entering 'foldersizes.exe /path:"e:\tmp" /export:"d:\myreport.html"' the program itself opens um (as window) and nothing is written in the d:\myreport.html. Is this a restriction of the trial-version?

Is it possible to get a really big image-.file of the map-graph? Ideally that big that all the sub-directories would fit into it? As far as I can see I just get the image-resolution of the part of the screen it is displaying currently.

Thinking about for what I could use it, I am wondering if your tool could read all my external harddisks (one after the other), store their contents on the internal harddisk and let me search for files in that complete-file-list. So I could find out, which external harddisk I have to connect with my computer to get the desired file... (Or perhaps rephrase it in a more general way: Is it possible, after the contents of an external harddisk is saved, to do all the things (reports, check free partition-space, check double files...) on this saved-filelist instead of the drive itself, so I do not have to connect the drive itself with the computer? I think such a possibility would be very helpful..)

Thanks a lot...
Jun 14 2011 at 1:41pm Copy Link

bob roos @ Michael R, I am using in to catalog files on my NAS. It should be very similar to external hard drives. Use the Search icon, select your path to the external drive, set the filter for *.* and START. You can save the results as XML or export as other types.
Jun 14 2011 at 1:57pm Copy Link
0
Michael R. @bob ross: Thanks for the answer. But the point of my question was not, if it is possible to do all the stuff on external drives, which are CURRENTLY connected to the computer, but to do this at a time when they are NO MORE connected with it. (Therefore their state has to be stored locally and the calculations have to be done on this list).
Jun 14 2011 at 2:07pm Copy Link
0
bob roos @ Michael R, In order to get folder sizes the drive must (of course) be connected. Then you can do as I outlined and get the list of files on the drive. Unplug the drive and browse the list of files (or lists of files) all you want. Save each list with the name of the drive so you know which is which.

If you mean will Folder Sizer import the lists so you can browse them there? I don't know. I will write my own program to manage the lists for searching.

´H. H. Hallo,
trying foldersizes the following questions occured.
1. is there a possibility to easily switch the levels when using map-graph? what I mean is, e.g. when clicking on a field of level 4, easily to switch back to level 3,2 or 1 (not havint to use the tree-view at the left side) ? - it would mean a kind of return button - or even better the possibilit to open different levels of map-graph in different tabs.

2. will the graphical intervace be more customizable in the future? (e.g. choosing fonts- fat and color of map-view)? I´m asking this, because my impression is, that the competting software treesize allow to see more at a first glance, although foldersizes may have advantages at a second glance.

3. thank you a lot for offering duplicate file detective at bdj,:I tried out a lot of similiar software, but for whatever reason, I didn´t discover duplicate file detective until it was offered at bdj. I made the decision to buy it and really can recommend it to toher customers, iduplicate file detective is much more versatile than other clone-detecting programs (to company: integration in windows explorer could be a futre improvement), I really dont want to miss this piece of software

with kind regards
H.H.

Key Metric Software Hi Folks,

Just wanted to work through a few unanswered questions posted here.

> [Command line interface not producing expected results] Is this a restriction of the trial-version?

No, there are no functional limitations in the trial version of FolderSizes (just time limited). We have thousands of companies using the command line interface daily - please shoot us an email at supportfoldersizes.com and we'll figure out why it's not working for you.

> Is it possible to get a really big image-.file of the map-graph?

Sure, you can use the settings in Options|Export to get graph images of any size you like.

> I am wondering if your tool could read all my external harddisks (one after the other), store their contents on the internal harddisk and let me search for files in that complete-file-list.

Sorry, this is not a function supported by FolderSizes at this time.

> is there a possibility to easily switch the levels when using map-graph

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you can use the "back" button in the main window toolbar (just below the ribbon bar) for this purpose.

> will the graphical intervace be more customizable in the future?

Absolutely, we're always working to improve customization support. If you'd like to tell us specifically what kinds of customizations interest you, please don't hesitate to email us at supportfoldersizes.com.

Finally, this BDJ promo is nearly at an end and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their comments, inquiries, and support. You've made our participation in BDJ a really great experience.

set dopus @ "customize" copy & paste snippets.

Michael R. Hello Mark and thanks for the answers.

Unfortunately my main-reason to buy for this buy was not implemented (yet).

I have a number of harddisks and most of them have to be built into a chassis to make them connectable to my laptop-computer. Of course I do not want to do all of this every time I am looking for e.g. certain files...

So I think, it would be a great extention of your program to allow all these operations not only on a currently accessible partition, but also a snapshop of a former existed and saved partition-content, i.e. a kind of virtual partition.

So, when saving this information, it would also be possible to check on one computer, what on another with no direct LAN-connection is and e.g. which programs yet have to be installed there.

Do you have any plans to implement such kind of feature in the future?

anthonyraynor? I bought FolderSizes and also picked up the discount on Duplicate File Detective at the same time. I had been using WindDirStat but it began to freeze too much, but great for an OSS project. FolderSizes is very fast, can see my network shares and just realized with the screenshots that it has a block diagram like WinDirStat.

Buy both and you will not be disappointed.

Trusted by over 30,000 businesses (and hundreds of thousands of end users) around the world, FolderSizes offers extremely advanced features such as metadata snapshots, trend analysis, superior multi-level scan filtering, integrated search for custom reporting, network storage discovery, powerful command line and scheduling interfaces, and *much* more.

FolderSizes has been under active development since 2002 (first commercial release in 2003), and is in use by the many of the largest organizations in the world every single day. It offers superior engineering, speed, and resource utilization semantics, and offers unique storage analysis algorithms not in use by any other product on the market.

We hope you'll give FolderSizes a try, as we will be continuing to add value to this product for many years to come.

Mappi75 I am not 100% sure i tested Disk Ferret a lots of month ago - and i think this program needs Java runtime installed.

(Never would install Java on my pc).

Maybe someone can comfirm?

Techtoysavvy Licensed per user/computer or both?
Fine Print says:
- FolderSizes Professional Edition is licensed per user, so if more people are going to use FolderSizes Professional Edition you will need to purchase additional copies.
- Each license allows installation on 1 computer.

This could be the most restrictive which is 1 licence per user and 1 license per machine. So if I have 5 users and 10 machines do I need 5, 10, 15 or 50 licenses.

I suspect this is by computer so any number of users can use this on any machine but each machine needs a license.

Danny @Mappi75,

'S Right. DiskFerret has Java runtime application needed to work.

Key Metric Software > Can I buy 1 license and install this to one server. On that server I can search for all administrative shares on all networked machines.

Thanks for your inquiry.

Yes, one single-user installation can be used to report against networked file systems.

The single-user license stipulates that FolderSizes can be installed on one computer, for use by a single individual. But you are free to analyze remote file systems with that same single-user license.

Techtoysavvy Thanks. Sounds good.
I just purchased along with Duplicate File Detective.
Is there any benefits from integration with these 2 programs?
I would like to see an option that allows you to calculate and store checksums when file analyzer runs. That way I also know which files have changed over time.

Rick Truell Mappi75: "(Never would install Java on my pc)."

Why not? You're missing out on some potentially great software...not only are a lot of single-platform programs like FolderSizes written using Java, but so are a great deal of multi-platform programs.

Key Metric Software Rick, FolderSizes is absolutely not written in Java. It is pure native code, without any interpretive layers involved. This is an important part of its incredible performance characteristics.

Norm Sash Can FolderSizes analyze FTP mounted drives (either direct or via drive mapping?)

Also, is there any ability to view folder sizes by the number of files contained in the folder rather than the size of the files? I ask this because some webhost companies use the number of files as a service quota threashold -- "unlimited diskspace" but they do limit the number of files on the disk. I need something to scan through the FTP folders and return back "size" in terms of number of files contained in the folder.

Key Metric Software Hi Norm,

> Can FolderSizes analyze FTP mounted drives

You'd need to use a third-party application for this (e.g. one that can expose an FTP server as an OS mapped network drive).

> Also, is there any ability to view folder sizes by the number of files contained in the folder rather than the size of the files?

Yes, all the detail views show file counts. To show file counts in the graph views, select the ribbon bar Graph tab and set the Display Mode to "File Count".

Danny @Key Metric Software,

Such a software that works with Java if DiskFerret is nothing wrong with it? It looks a lot nicer and has 3D effect and real colours.

Yeah, I see now that I misread Mappi75's statement and that it's actually Disk Ferret he was saying required Java.

My apologies for the error.

Richard Blake In January 2015 KeyMetric offered a 25% discount on all purchases, including upgrades. At the time upgrade fee was 27.50, so the net price was 20.63. Remember, though, that if you upgrade you continue to have one license. If you take today's BdJ offer you then have two licenses, one current and one older. Do you have a second PC that could use a copy of FolderSizes, but doesn't need the latest features?

Key Metric Software Hello folks,

Regarding PayPal, our payment processing provider apparently doesn't support PayPal transactions when purchasing via affiliates (like Bits du Jour). I know it's lame, but we're stuck with it for now, sorry. If you can't use a credit card or some other form of payment, reach out to us and we'll see what we can do.

For those of you looking to upgrade from a previous version of FolderSizes, please contact us at salesfoldersizes.com and we'll work with you.

H. H. Hallo,
a question asked when version 7 was released:

1. is it possible to compare 2 (or more) snapshots automatically - so that a resport can be generated, where

a) new
b) deleted
c) changed
folders and files are been shown.

Is this possible now in version 8?

If not, can this Feature be exspected in the nearer future?

H.H.

Thank you for responding in advance

D Rogers This 50% discount has been present for the last week. Now on the 24 hour promotion, it is still the same 50% discount. Normally, during the one day promotion, a deeper discount is offered. Why not now? Why is it the same as the last week or so?

CFGuy Hi - This program looks like it does absoluteloy EVERYHTING anyone could ever want done to a directory- so kudos to Key Metric for finding a way to offer lots of features ina program for users who would want and make use of these features. But i have to also agree with D. Rogers (above) in that at $30, even with the discount (that D. Rogers claims is really no better than was offered all week), the pricepoint is still high enough to make me look very hard at all of the program features (and there are many of them!) and determine how useful they might be for me. Does anyone else have experience using this program to be able to tell us, personally. how they best utalize it on a day-to-day or even week-to-week basis? Just my thoughts as a software consumer. Thanks. -CFGuy.

HD I am in full concurrence with both D Rogers and CFGuy. The product website details their Marketing propaganda of this product delivering Enterprise solutions over several networks. That might justify the 50% cost reduction. They should have also created a price-point for Personal single-user license for individual users. I might consider paying $19.95 or lesser amount for a single user license, that I can use in my home network.
