T M What is the limitations on this licence. I.E. do I have to buy a copy for each computer I want to use it on?

Eugene Gindin This is the full Pro license with no limitation on use, the license you are purchasing though is priced per computer, in other words one license per PC.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

gail f Does this require that the computers be networked? I have 2 home computers and have wireless, but they are not networked. Do I have to buy/download/install 2 licenses then?

Thanks for clarifying!

Eugene Gindin If two computers are on the same wireless network they can see each other and would work fine. You are required to have one license per computer though, so in this case you would need two.

S Hauber Just having read the old comments:

For the minmal useful possible constellation, i.e. having two of my computers being synchronized, I really do need two licenses?

This can't be right, can it?

Or does it mean I am allowed to install GoodSync only on one computer, but can synchronize all directories I can access to from this one, i.e. also the ones on the LAN. So I could synchronize e.g. c:\my_dir and \\comp2\my_dir or even \\comp1\my_dir and \\comp2\my_dir?

~~~~~~
Is it possible to synchronize directories on two computers which are not connected at all? Of course this would mean that this synchronization has to be done on a medium like a CD or USB-stick. Ideally this medium would contain certain information about the directory for both computers (e.g. size/date/hash-value of each file in this directory), so GoodSync can decide, if a file on the current computer should be copied to the other one...
Siber Systems S Hauber: That is correct, you would get a single license for a single computer which would allow you to synchronize every directory that is accessible from that machine.
Michael R: It is very easy. Our 24/7 support staff can assist you when the time comes.
Norbert: According to their website, the free product has limitations and they have also have a paid Pro version. Please let us know if you have questions about GoodSync.
Doug A I purchased GoodSync to Go during a previous offering, and use it to back up my directories to USB hard drives periodically.
From the GoodSync FAQ:
A: You need one license per computer on which GoodSync is installed. When GoodSync syncs with a remote computer, you do not need license for this remote computer (server), you only need GoodSync license for client computer. Example: you have 5 client computers (Windows desktops) that sync to 2 servers. You need 5 licenses -- only for clients.
So, if I'm reading this correctly, then if you "designate" one system as a server and the other as a client, you should only need one license. Thus, I don't understand the "old response" by Eugene...
The "freeware" version of GoodSync is just about worthless other than for trying it - the number of file transfers allowed it too small to be of much regular use.
Jan 4 2010 at 2:36am Copy Link
0
Siber Systems Doug: Sorry about the confusion caused by the previous response by Eugene. The FAQ is correct.
To clarify, you need a license for each machine that GoodSync is installed and runs on. So if you sync to a remote computer or removable drive without installing GoodSync on it, there is no additional license required. Please let me know if you require any further clarification.
jeff k thats the problem with Roboform, goodsync etc. - great program you guys are too expensive and you want us to have license for every machine and goodsync prob only a 1 year license anyway...also, there should be a service for a couple bucks a year to upload your roboform userdata and maybe have a 10 MB limit with that goodsync button instead of trying to sell a mozy type of app to us...too expensive on everything...
Jan 4 2010 at 6:01am Copy Link
Siber Systems GoodSync (and RoboForm) are each sold as a lifetime license. The above price is NOT an annual fee.
As far as RoboForm user data there is such a service called RoboForm Online and it is 100% free: https://online.roboform.com
Also, GoodSync does file synchronization for all files to multiple types of storage. It is not only for remote file backup like mozy.
jeff k Thanks for the response Simon - do you mean that red "Sync" button on the right side of Roboform Pro is not the same thing as the GoodSync program? and its free to sync my Roboform data online and not just a trial? if that's the case then i have a much better opinion of your company....probably even recommend to others again...
Jan 4 2010 at 3:33pm Copy Link
0
Doug A Don't mean to answer for Simon, but the text on the online.roboform.com site states, "Introducing RoboForm Online (Beta) - A new service for RoboForm users that automatically keeps your passwords in sync between multiple computers and also allows you to access your passwords from any computer ...anywhere in the world."
Thus, sync'ing your RoboForm passwords does NOT need GoodSync Pro. You can use this free service. GoodSync Pro is for synchronizing (or backing up) your files/folders on your laptop to external drives or other systems.
For example, I have a laptop with a work directory that gets updated while on the road, with new Powerpoint charts, schedules, notes, and so forth. When I get back to the office, I can sync my work directory with my "master" directory on the company server. I also downloaded some MP3s, and want to back those up to an external hard drive where I store all my music. For these uses, I only need one license of GoodSync on my laptop.
If I also have a home computer, and did some work at home so want to synchronize one of the directories on that computer with, say, my company server, then I will need a separate license for that home computer.
If I just have two computers, though, and want to ensure all their directories are synchronized with each other, then I only need to run GoodSync Pro on one of them and only need one license. One computer acts as the host, and the other as the "server", in this case. Hope that clears things up (and Simon please correct me if I got it wrong!).
David Gilmour Having previously tried several other products, I have relied on Goodsync Pro as part of my routine file backup strategy for the past 20 months. I run it continuously on my workstation, and it has proved to be a dependable workhorse. I have been impressed by the steady stream of product updates. Technical support has been responsive on the few occasions I have asked for it. The $23.95 that I paid for my license has proved to be an excellent investment. This is an unsolicited endorsement. More often than not, tools like this fail to live up to my hopes and expectations; when one does, I am more than happy to let others know.
Siber Systems jack hill: if you buy two licenses of GoodSync Pro with the Bits Du Jour link, the total cost will be $24.90.
Jon Koerner Yeah, they had a deal on the order form where you can buy a 2nd license for $9.95, so $24.95 total for two. I got two, then placed another order for a 3rd license plus a GoodSyncPro2Go (half-priced at $19.95 on the form). Only problem is that all 4 are licensed to my name, and I wanted to give two of them away as gifts... Ought to be a way.
Mr. Yoop Do you also offer GoodSync2Go for a discounted price or is it at least possible to order it together with the Bits du Jour GoodSync Pro license? In my point of view, especially GoodSync2Go gives you the flexibility for syncing multiple computers - and wth this GoodSync is really more flexible as other tools like e.g. Microsoft's SyncToy. Just one more more technical issue: I want to sync only a few directories within my major sync directory. Is it possible to save that only a subset of the directories should be synced? Otherwise, when I create a job for each subdirectory, is it possible to combine all these job to one sync "task" that executes all jobs one by one automatically? Thanks for your support! Mr. Yoop
Jun 27 2010 at 7:04am Copy Link
Siber Systems Randy: You do not need a new license when moving to a new computer. The old one is still valid. Please contact our support at http://support.goodsync.com to request an activation. The files will work just fine.
Mr. Yoop: GoodSync2Go is offered cheaper to all GoodSync users. Re: directory subset, this can be done easily through our Filters option where you can include or exclude whichever directories you want in each Sync Job. Please contact support if you have any questions.
Geoff Woodfield I have used lots of backup and synchronisation software over the years. For the last year and half I have been using Goodsync Pro. Its been flawless for me in its operation, has an attractive interface and is pretty easy to use but packed with features. You can get a free version but my advice (for what its worth) is to get the Pro version.
Conrad TDI Sorry if I've become neurotic about double-checking version upgrade polices. I read in the "policy" box that today's offer includes free upgrades for life.
So: I imagine GoodSync will be changed over from v8.6+ to v9 quite soon. Just to be sure, am I correct that this purchase will also active a license for upcoming versions?
Thanks for taking the time to answer! Yes, at this price the Pro version is a no-brainer.....I have used the software, and it's brilliant.
GoodSync2Go does what I need but I feel like I might be missing something about GoodSync Pro.
Thanks.
Albert C. It would be nice to know about the veracity of the upgrade policy. I mean, Siber Systems broke their upgrade policy when RoboForm 7 was released and people had to pay for a supposed free lifetime upgrades license. Also they released the Everywhere version that it's pay-per-year and online based (this version becomes cheaper than the Desktop one because you pay once for all of your computers and devices). I'd like to know if the looming GoodSync 9 will also feature a new range like the RoboForm Everywhere line.
Thanks! ^_^
Albert C. Melissa, thanks for your answer.
However, I have to correct you. "Upgrades" in software are changes from versions (at least 95+% of software vendors do so). So there are updates and upgrades. In the policy tab in this offer there is "free upgrades for life". This means you only pay once for a product, not only in a version number.
Please don't mislead people talking about "upgrades" when you try to say "updates".
Kevin M Thanks Melissa -
I have a couple of additional questions; first, would it cost $15 for each computer, or is there a discount for multiple computers? Second, I want to use GoodSync2Go, would it be cheaper to wait until the BDJ deal comes up for that specifically, or would it be the same price to purchase a license now and buy an upgrade? Thank you!
Mitchell Kastner I have been using GoosdSync for years, not for sync but for backup, without complaint except that, as far as I know, it backs up folder, but not individual files. It is one tool amongst four back up programs I use.
The authors are conscientious, in that no more than a week goes by without a version change.
One suggestion: if you are like I am and are interested only in backups, then I suggest that when you create a job, you clikc on Options and uncheck delte file in source check box. As I have lots of external drive capacity on multiple USB drives, I do not care about the size of backup folders; i.e., containing files deleted from the source folder.
Steve P Melissa,
The Policy tab clearly states "Upgrades for Life". I am a software developer, and an "Upgrade" in the computer world means, from one version to the next, as in from version 1 to version 2. An "Update", which I believe is what you actually provide, means corrections and bug fixes for the current version, typically form verison 1.1 to version 1.2. The information in the policy tab is misleading. Should it not read "Free upgrade to Version 9".
Conrad TDI Has Sibersystems considered a true Lifetime upgrade program:
- A premium, additional charge, add-on cost to a software purchase that would cover all future version changes?
I would gladly pay an additional $25 on top of today's price for such a feature, maybe more for a truly great piece of software like RoboForm or GoodSync.
This does seem to be one of the working models in today's marketplace, and I have done so with programs like AdMuncher.
Vivaldi Melissa,
The BDJ tab 'Policy' states 'Free upgrades for life.' That means it includes new versions, as well as updates to the current one. An error in the Policy tab doesn't inspire confidence it either BDJ or the vendor, as it shows a serious lack of communication and attention to legal detail. 'We'll get this fixed', after the fact, is, to me, a red flag. (edit: The policy was changed as I was typing, and before I posted.)
There are comments from *two* people, not one, regarding your company not honoring its upgrade policy on software. These comments are absolutely relevant to this discussion, as the complaints aren't specific to the software, but to how upgrade policies are not being honored. The instances they're citing are about another program, but the point is to warn potential buyers of today's software that there might be a problem.
When someone posts a complaint about software or customer service on any site, I generally take it with a grain of salt, and do further research. I don't need to do that here. Your responses to the critical posts present as angry and defensive. Saying you're aware of people claiming free upgrades for life, and then challenging your customer base to 'show us' where that's stated is childish at best, and very poor business at worst. If there's a problem, then it's up to you, the vendor, to fix it. A goodwill gesture would have been to allow those people the free upgrade once. You could have enforced the policy your way from that point, as long as you made it very clear to your customers what that would be. Apparently, that didn't happen.
I was seriously considering buying GoodSync2Go when the promotion came up, but I won't be doing that now. Your responses, not the critical posts, have fueled my decision. I count customer service as an important part of any purchase; what I've seen here doesn't inspire confidence in your company.
Please don't tell me this post isn't relevant. To recap: past customers have a problem with policy being observed (no one complained about the software BTW), the vendor puts the onus on them, I use that information to make a purchasing decision regarding the software. It's relevant.
Greg M Melissa,
I've been using Goodsync for years, and really like it. I sync 100s of GBs of application, mp3, and image data and files all the time between my various PCs and my Linux based server (Samba).
Can you share here what the upgrade price will be for Goodsync 8 users, who bought prior to version 9?
Also, I bought a new notebook and will retire my old one. Can I transfer a Goodsync license from an old laptop to a new one (I don't remember what the T's and C's of the license agreement are and wasn't able to find the license on your site, which could be me just skimming to quickly).
Jonathan Keener Has anything been announced regarding the expected upgrade price when version 9 comes out? I currently have 5 licenses to GoodSync Pro and 1 for GoodSync2Go (all purchased prior to Nov. 2009) and I am wondering if it might make sense to purchase 5 new licenses here today at 50% off, or wait and upgrade my current licenses when version 9 is available. Another factor, although I'm guessing it is less likely, is whether there is any plan to have a "GoodSync Everywhere" license model like roboform?
Conrad TDI OK......I'm game
By my calculations: unlike RoboForm, which failed to integrate seamlessly with the latest browsers unless updated to a new version, GoodSync is only operating system dependent. So, since Windows 8 is roughly 15 months away I figure the cost per day of 15 months of ownership of v9 is less than 4 cents per day. Heck-of-a deal
VLM Hi everyone,
I've been a RoboForm and GoodSync user for years. IMO, both the company and these products are excellent:
1. They do what they say they will do.
2. They rarely break or have problems, and those that do occur, are fixed rapidly and well.
3. With the exception of a couple of individuals, their tech support is always timely and good to excellent. (No company can be in business for years without hiring a couple of bad apples. :):)
4. I see that some people are expressing preference for GoodSync2Go, and I would offer one note, not of caution, but of information: Since it is not installed via any process of which Windows is aware, the portable version cannot access the Windows Task Scheduler. For this reason, I have chosen to purchase 2 licenses for my "main machine", one desktop and one 2Go. That way, I can sync somewhere on the fly when I wish to, AND I can use all the scheduling facilities of the desktop version.
Note also that this distinction does not seem relevant WRT RoboForm. I mean, what would one schedule?
5. Yes, there WAS a big marketing flop with the release of RoboForm7. Long-time promises about lifetime upgrades were broken, in the eyes of many users. In defense of this company, and all the other companies that have mistakenly offered such lifetime upgrade programs, no company or organization can operate in the long run on the basis of one-time revenues. So speaking only for myself, I understand and believe that they simply MUST charge for major version upgrades ... but not necessarily for intraversion updates. I think there is a lot of confusion over the terms "upgrade" and "update". In the "olden days", most companies used these 2 terms correctly. But nowadays, there are so many "kids" running around who don't possess all that old-fashioned knowledge ... you know, clear definitions, coherent communication, little things like that.
6. Regarding today's cost, having been a customer for years. I can assure you all that you'll likely not get a better deal on upgrades, additional licenses, or the like than the $15/first license + $10/subsequent licenses offered today. Given the promise of a free major version upgrade (term used correctly :):) to version 9, if you're interested, just do it.
7. One thing some may wish to consider: GoodSync does NOT perform drive true image backups, in the manner of TrueImage, Casper, and the like. This tool is for keeping things backed up throughout the day, not for backing up the OS/software drive once a day (or the like). Just to be clear ... those, who wish to perform both functions, may find that a 2-tool solution works best. I certainly do.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. I endorse this product and this company wholeheartedly.
Best to all!
Greg M I have posted a comment like this before, but it's still true...
Goodsync was recommended to me by friends that provide IT services to small businesses. This software has worked very well for me for years. Between my documents, my MP3s and my photo collection (JPG and RAWs), I keep almost 1TB of data synchronized (and thereby backed up) across multiple systems/drives.
Eddie Tex @ Doug H,
From the prior comments, you essentially need a license per install.
You can sync in any direction from the computer that it's installed on. So if you'd like to sync from one machine to many, you only need one installation and thus, only need to pay for one license.
If however, you want to be able to run this program from many machines, you'd need a license for each that you're running it from.
Greg M John H, yes you can, but as you suspected it's a little less "idiot proof" in that: you need to make sure that you correctly tell GoodSync which directories on which machines/drives to keep in synch and then you have to push a button to do the synch (versus dropbox just doing it in the background). For me, none of this is hard to do, so I have never felt the need to get a paid dropbox account.
Siber Systems Dillon, basically GoodSync is a file synchronizer and backup is just a particular case of synchronization, i.e. with default settings GoodSync makes source and destination folders equal. By default in 1-way sync GoodSync copies files from Left to Right and deletes all files from a destination folder that are not in a source folder. You can disable uncheck "Propagate Deletions" option (Job-Option-General) if you do not want to delete files from a destination folder. But GoodSync doesn't compress backing up files, it copies them "as is" so user can restore files from backup any time without any software.
John H I downloaded and installed this.
This program is strictly for computer technicians not general computer users.
I am sure this is a fine product if one is a skilled at setting up FTP, networks and such.
It requires one to have knowledge of how to setup FTP connections between computers. Or something like that. I am a computer user not a computer technician.
The website offers zero technical help. It does spend lots of time telling you how wonderful the program is.
A few days ago I downloaded FTP Box which is open source. I ended the project when I had to enter FTP information. Their web site offers the same amount of tech help as Good Sync ... Zero.
In my previous post I loosely referred to Dropbox as idiot proof. I would like to clarify and say that Dropbox is a well thought out out and COMPLETE solution that does not require one to learn extra technical skills or to read the developers mind in order to use the software. People that have priorities other than trying to make half baked solutions work are not idiots.
I think one well written page of instructions would probably get most non technician users up and running. Is that asking to much?
Siber Systems Hi John,
We agree that we could always make things easier for users. Sometimes it's hard to balance advanced features with regular features. That said, you don't have to FTP or any of the advanced options you are referring to and I doubt that most users will.
As for options on getting started, the software will guide you through the process of setting up the first job. If you miss it, we do have other pages to refer to that make setting up a job really easy. For example:
Tutorials - http://www.goodsync.com/h...s/tutorial
And for those that want a lot of details,...
Manual - http://www.goodsync.com/support/manual
Again, we're always lookingf for ways to make this easier, but we also have a ton of additional features that are helpful for the advanced users that you won't find in competitor products.
2) Yes, just setup a job to sync the .pst folder. When I syn mine I typically make sure Outlook in closed. We're working on ways to make Outlook Sync even faster.
3) Think of it this way, if you can see a file/folder, then GoodSync can sync it.
4) For beginners, we have easy step-by-step instructions for setting up a job and chosing automatic settings in our Tutorial (http://www.goodsync.com/support/tutorial)
With v8, to keep files in sync on two different machines, only one license is required because you only need to install GoodSync on one of the machines.
I want to sync .pst files. I still won't use goodsync to backup databases to S3. It will copy the entire file. I think. I just excluded my DB directory to be safe. I filed a ticket to double check but I am pretty sure the gstp protocol requires client server. They have to have a way of comparing checksums and the program must do that. I was hoping that S3 sync would be different because Amazon provides an API. There is another program that does differential sync with S3 but only on files over 2G. They claim they is some limitation to the Amazon API but they are working on it.
In the office we used the Windows version which seems to be stable and very effective, but on the Mac things are not there yet. If the price was the SAME, I would have bought it today. Sorry that I am not.
I am not sure you have embraced the Mac community, as your software isn't updated on the very popular MacUpdate.com site, checked daily by thousands of people.
Thank you.
HJ B From the comments, it seems that this product can be great in the hands of a well informed technician, can be a disaster in the hands of an uninformed person, and can fall somewhere unpredictability in between for most people.
1. If one gets the settings wrong, does one risk the unintentional destruction of data files, applications and system files?
2. From the comments, it seems that once copy of the software on Computer A, can be used to syncronize files on all other computers on the same local area network; however, the program must be run from Computer A. Is that correct?
3. Is this program compatible with the various popular softwares that protect individual computers and LANS? Or must such software be turned off during the synchronization process? If so, what is the status of computer and LAN protection while the synchronization is in progress?
4. If one has a LAN with several computers, can synchronization be used to eliminate material on Computers B, C, D and E that also exists on Computer A?
5. If two files have the same names, but differ in some other respect, such as size or date of last modification, will the program a) make sure that all versions are on all computers, or b) follow some rule as to which version to eliminate?
6. If date/time is an element in synchronization, does the program make certain that the clocks of all computers being syncronized are set for the same time? [Theoretically, due to differences in clock settings, a more recent file can have an earlier last change date and time].
7. A number of file transfer programs, including the Windows OS copy function, will announce that some programs can not be copied because the file name (which is actually the file path string) is too long. Unfortunately, they only tell you the file name, and do not show the path or give the opportunity to change the path. The only options are to skip that particular transfer (which may be one of many in process) or quit all transfers. You are also given the opportunity to skip x number of other pending transfers that have names that are too long. When dealing with a large number of files that are being transferred or synched, this presents an impossible situation for the user. Part of the job is done already; there is no usable record of the files that present a problem; and going forward means that a bunch of files will be out of synch, with no meaningful method of addressing the problem. The same kind of scenario can happen with files that the computer is not sure are the same. Does GoodSync address this problem?
Fletch 'enter my login information on the other computer' ? Is that in response to my TWO license requirement question?
The response I got via a ticket I opened is that a license is required for the machine running the server too. So to sync a desktop/laptop using the client/server features requires TWO licenses.
Note that a 2-license purchase via this deal is 25% off regular pricing.
Siber Systems Ron, I am sorry that was not the answer to that question, I think we are talking about two different scenarios. I apologize for any confusion. As far as the discount, yes this is 50% off retail price for a GoodSync license and if you purchase GoodSync 8 through this deal you will receive GoodSync 9 for free when it is released. Also, it is correct that you receive a discount by buying more licenses.
Fletch Unlimited number at 50% off? That's not what I saw last night when I tested a purchase. The web page only had a promo code for $15 off the entire order and the 2nd license was offered at $9.95. Should have saved a screen shot.
As for going to the web site now and buying the 2nd license using my license code, that's not $9.95, it's a little more than that and goes up in unit price as you add licenses to the order.
The $9.95 2nd license has always been for retail purchases.
Konstantinos User @Siber Systems:
Thank you for taking time to reply. I would like to ask you to keep my complaint regarding the pricing for Mac users, especially on a product that is not mature.
I think I had tested v2.3.4 or v2.3.5 few months ago, and was not happy with some operational features, mostly GUI and file synchronizing issues. I am sure your programmers have progressed on that version. I strongly suggest you keep up your versioning with MacUpdate.com as well.
I look forward to a better pricing and will then be definitely be giving you my input, as I am myself a programmer, too.
Bjondc I'm confused. This *seems* to promote itself as a way to keep multiple computers in the same house synced/coordinated with each other -- but you either need to make mulitiple purchases &/or become a network engineer. The "website" link at the top doesn't offer *any* information (the ""so much more" link at the *bottom* of the description verbiage is better -- but leads to pages of more confusion for the less expert among us) and I'm having trouble finding anything about reduced-rate-mulitiple licenses (referred to in older comments). It is also unclear if you need to be on-line (with the internet) to do the syncing between computers on the same in-home wifi network.
I'd be interested in a product like this but not if it's going to be more work than doing it manually (sneakernet; direct-connect).
VLM I would appreciate clarification about one point, please. The write-up, above, states
"GoodSync 9 features the all new GoodSync Connect, which allows users to connect two or more computers directly, in a peer-to-peer style, without using intermediate servers to store files (online storage services). ... Simply setup a GoodSync Connect account, link each computer to the same account, and use GoodSync Connect to seamlessly connect your computers."
Where does the GoodSync Connect account itself exist? In other words, is the whole operation TRULY free from the need for any outside server? Thank you very much.
Bjondc It *appears*, then, that if I have two computers (e.g. at home) that use the same wifi router to access the internet but are not otherwise "connected" to each other, that I would need only one license -- *unless* you mean by "the same network" that they are already connected to each other. (The only time my computers have been "connected to each other" is when I've set them up with a physical transfer cable -- old fashioned but IT WORKS!)
There is no server involved here! (I have not figured out how to set up a "network" no matter how "easy" it is supposed to be -- things keep not-working-out and it's not worth the aggro to pursue it.)
IOW from what those pages say, I could "install" GS9 on both computers & "connect" them through my wifi using a single license? Does this involve installing "Goodsync Connect"? Is GSC only needed for computers on different networks? connecting over the internet not internal wifi? or what?
I am NOT CLEAR on these questions!
I am glad to see the simple statement in answer to VLM's question of needing to be online -- i.e. that you don't.
Will try re-reading the web-refs again later but otherwise may just have to give up on this.
VLM I have another question, please, about GoodSync Connect. The write-up, above, emphasizes connections across a LAN. But can one connect home from outside the LAN via the Internet using GoodSync Connect, or otherwise? For example, if I'm traveling and wish to back up my day's work on a machine or network drive back home, can I do that using GoodSync 9?
Also, does GoodSync 9 support backups via remote connections (ftp, http, using ssh)?
Siber Systems Hi Blair,
Thank you for your question. You can use a GoodSync Connect account to connect any two non-connected computers. It does not matter if the computers are located in the same house or one here and one on the on the other side of the world. Just install GoodSync 9 on each computer. Connect each computer to the same GoodSync connect account, which you will create during the initial install. And sync the two computers using GoodSync Connect as your peer-to-peer connection. You will need to have a GoodSync license for each computer using GoodSync connect.
Jan-Christoph Ihrens Hi,
on "Sep 22 2011 at 1:17pm", it was said that "if users take advantage of this deal they will get an upgrade to version 9 for free when it is released." Well, I bought GoodSync Pro two days later via BDJ, but I didn't get a free update to version 9, and when I installed the current version over the one I had used until then, it turned into a trial version. Re-entering the order ID didn't help.
Today I bought a second license via BDJ and used that one for the time being, but nevertheless I'm still interested in the free upgrade that was promised last time. What do I have to do to get it?
Siber Systems Hi VLM,
Our checkout cart is actually only charging you $14.95 for the first license, $9.95 for the second license, and $13.95 for the third license. What is actually going on with the pricing at checkout is that it is giving you the first license for the 50% off discount, the next license for $9.95, and the third license for $13.95.
We offer discounts when you purchase additional licenses, but our shopping cart just recalculates to show a "per license" cost. If you look at your discount at checkout it actually takes $51.00 off and you will see that you are actually paying those three amounts instead of $17.95 for each. Look at your actual "TOTAL" amount.
VLM Thanks Michelle, I see the discount now. The presentation does confuse me at first. I tried with 4 licenses, and apparently the 4th license is 17.95. So it's about $6 cheaper to buy 2 licenses, twice, than it is to buy 4 licenses, once. LOL ... I imagine that may not be quite the effect you intend. (And I'm genuinely laughing as I write this. I have (bought and) installed GS just now, without creating a GoodSync Connect account. All seems to be working ok, as long as I have sharing set on the laptop (GS is on the desktop, my main machine). What, if any advantage is there in having the Connect account? Siber Systems Hi VLM,
Thank you for letting us know your confusion, it will help us to better inform our customers at check out in the future.
GoodSync2Go runs from the portable device itself, not on the host computer. Therefore you can install and run GoodSync2Go even when you don't have administrator rights or installing software is prohibited on the host computer.
You only need one license for GoodSync2Go, so you can buy one GoodSync2Go license and keep several computers in sync.
Emil Kucera For more information on GoodSync Connect please read details here: http://www.goodsync.com/h...ks/connect.
I read it but still can't quite understand it.
From the statement:
"setup a GoodSync Connect account, install GoodSync 9 on each computer you want to sync, and these computers will be able to talk to each other and perform peer-to-peer synchronization."
it appears that I would need a second licence to take advantage of the increased speed etc. Can you, please, just answer that with a Yes or No?
And a second question: Do I have to be internet-connected to set up the Connect account or is it set locally on the machine? (Please say either "no, you dont, it is set locally", OR "yes you do, it is set at Siber")
Siber Systems Hi Emil,
Thank you for your questions. Yes- that is correct, you will need to purchase another license to access GS Connect on another computer. A second license is $9.95 and a third license is $13.95- to give you an idea of additional license pricing.
Yes, in order to set up a GoodSync connect account you do have to be connected to the Internet.
Bjondc I continue to be confused. Apparently even though this is designed to be used on more than one computer you need a license for the 2nd (& beyond) computer. Is there any way that the program can be used with only one license?
You say you need to be on-line to set up the "connect" account -- but not to do the syncing?
I think this is too complicated for me! Can't tell how many licenses I'd really need (minor in the $ category but *annoying* that it's so obscure) or if I could use it as I'd want to (not necessarily on-line during sync.)
For HOME use marketing it should be somewhat clearer!
Nigel Blumenthal Blair, as a satisfied user of GoodSync v8, I'll try to explain a bit: I think the new capabilities are a little confusing for you. If you have two or more computers at your house, and they are on an internal network, whether or not you are connected to the internet, you only need one licence for the machine on which you're running GoodSync. You can sync between two computers at one time, in either direction, ie if GS is installed on Machine A, and you have files on that machine and Machine B and Machine C, you install GS on Machine A and sync its files with those on Machine B, and then as a separate job you can sync its files with those on Machine C. In both cases you can choose which files to sync, or to ignore at your choice. Since you can transfer the licence to another owned computer, I suspect you could also uninstall from m/c A and reinstall on m/c C to sync it with machine B if you wanted to.
I find it very useful for email files, work files, client information, and especially photos. Unfortunately I bought mine just before the cutoff date for the free upgrade, so I'll have to pay for mine, but it's a great product.
Hope this helps.
VLM Blair, even though I've been asking MANY questions today about v9, I would also report that I am a LONG-time, satisfied user of GoodSync going all the way back to version 4 or 5. From my questions, you can see that v9 has me a bit confused, too! But this is a great product.
I particularly like the ability to sync in both directions. If you have a file in both locations, and if BOTH locations have been updated since the last sync, GoodSync tells you this and enables you to tell it what to do for that file, specifically. Also, you can right-click and open the file (MS Office and some others), delete the file on one side manually, and do various other actions.
As far as I know, you can set up an unlimited number of jobs, some one-directional (true backups), some two-directional (syncs), and then establish a schedule, selection filters, and more for each job independently. Each job appears in the UI in its own tab, each job has its own properties, etc.
GoodSync keeps track of manual changes made in the file system. For example, if you cut a file, several files, or an entire directory that is incorporated in a sync or backup job, GoodSync will record both the cut and the new placement in the UI. And much more.
The UI is surprisingly clear, given all the functionality. I really do wholeheartedly recommend this product. I just am trying to better understand the new v9 features, that's all. And ... I'm guessing that Michelle is asleep at this point, given that she probably lives in the USA eastern time zone, where it's approaching 11 PM.
One more thing ... on occasion, I've had a licensing issue of some sort, and they have ALWAYS given me the benefit of the doubt ... an extra activation here, another there, over the years. I've never abused this kindness, of course ... I wouldn't ... and at the same time, I do appreciate how easy it has been to resolve business issues.
One point of note: If you are looking for a product to back up DATA, this is a great one. If you are looking for a product to make disk images, this product won't do that, to the best of my knowledge. Just a few days ago, there was a discussion here, WRT another product, about the value of maintaining BOTH image backups (e.g., Macrium) AND more frequent and more specialized backups of key data. This product does the latter very, very well. Just a point of clarification.
Siber Systems Bob Roos,
We are very happy that you enjoy using your GS2GO V8. We have outlined what is new in Version 9 on our Web site here: http://www.goodsync.com/h.../whats-new.
Now you can select multiple folders to sync (not just one), in one job. Before, in ver 8, it had to be achieved with Filters. Also, with all new block-level sync, GoodSync is faster than ever before. A normal file transfer would send the entire file, even if only small parts of the file have changed. With block-level transfers, only the parts of a file are transferred that differ.
Also, check out all new GoodSync Explorer: http://www.goodsync.com/h...s/explorer.
Zsolt Valaki Speaking the problems too, I have tried GoodSync, but immediately found a difficulty. Client software of my online backup provider changes the time stamp of files on uploading. (there isn't sync feature in that.) When I try to synchronize via webdav by GoodSync, all files is shown as changed because of the time stamp. I wanted to compare by content, so I set "compare by MD5", but there wasn't any option to disable time stamp comparing.:( By the way, the state of checkbox "Compare by MD5" is always cleared automatically, when I enter the option tab.
Total lack of zip (compress and encrypt not by NTFS) support is a painful drawback as well.
Siber Systems VLM,
From the GoodSync manual: Go to, Job-Options-General.
Save deleted/replaced files, multiple version (off by default). If checked, then GoodSync saves a file just before it rewrites or deletes this file. The file is saved to _gsdata_\_history_ folder on the side of the job where the replacement/deletion is about to occur. Timestamp is added to file name before its extension, so that multiple versions of the file can be saved. Directory structure is preserved. This option cannot be used together with 'Save deleted/replaced files, last version only' option.
DroidLuvr I guess I'm still confused about licenses. I use RoboForm Pro Everywhere, and their tech support has suggested GoodSync Pro to integrate and save my data profiles to my network as well as to the RoboForm online servers...
I have a home network with a total of 5 computers, and 3 connected external USB HDDs that I use these for media and backup. I don't have any one of the PCs set up with server software, just a combo of WinXP Pro and Win7 Home Premium.
How many GoodSync 9 licenses would I need to keep the computers backed up to the HDDs? And would I need the GoodSync2Go for the HDDs??
Thanks!
Bjondc Hey Droid -- I have a somewhat simpler system (only 2 computers right now & both are W7, no "server" setup, but also several external HDDs that I connect & disconnect as needed for backing up) but the same questions -- how many licenses would I need! *Apparently* one per computer -- but I didn't ask about the external HDDs before.
I'm also still confused as to whether or not you need to be online (on the internet) to do a sync w/in a home network using GSConnect, or if you only need to go online to set up a GSConnect account. Or what.
DroidLuvr Hi Blair:
I believe you only need to be connected WITHIN your network after setting up the connect in order to do the sync, but I hope SS will get us an answer to both soon!!
Siber Systems Hi everyone,
if computers are connected in one local network you can sync files between them (including external HDs) using shared folders when GoodSync is installed on one of the computers. You must have full access permissions on shared folders, be able to open shared folders, create/copy/delete a file there. Note, that synchronization could be running only from one computer where GoodSync is installed.
If you want to run sync from any computer you have to either install GoodSync on each computer (5 licenses) or use GoodSync2Go installed on any portable drive (1 GoodSync2Go license). GS2Go can be purchased on our Web site at http://www.goodsync.com.
If you want to sync files over the Internet using GoodSync Connect you need a license for each computer with which you want to sync.
Siber Systems For example,
You can sync files between two computers when GoodSync is installed on one computer if computers are connected in local network. If computers are not connected in a local network then you can sync files between them using GoodSync Connect account via the Internet. If the computers are not connected in a local network then you would need a GS license for each computer that you wish to sync using GS Connect.
DroidLuvr Thank you, Michelle.
If you don't mind, let me clarify then: if I want each computer to run GoodSync and backup/sync to an external HDD, I could either install on all computers OR install one license of GoodSync2Go on ALL of the USB drives and sync from all computers to those drives?
Siber Systems Hi Droid Lyvr,
For your situation there are a few options here:
The first method would be through our GoodSync Connect system.
The second method will be through three licenses of GoodSync2Go 9, you will need to set up a job on each of these devices to synchronize X Folder with Y Folder.
The third will utilize five licenses of GoodSync 9 Desktop and will need to be set up similarly to method two.
I have been very happy with RoboForm and am looking forward to trying GoodSync. As I did have a couple of problems with the trial version a while back, I think I will start with a couple of licenses while they are on such a good sale, and then go from there, according to my importance of PC backups!
J C Thanks bob for yr feedback. I got onto site and bought 2 licenses for GS9 anyway. In terms of convenience, very inexpensive. Whilst at checkout I saw the offer for GS2GO which was heavily discounted, so bought that as well. Now I have all the convenience and flexibility to sync my files which until I saw this BDJ offer, was just so time consuming and difficult. Thanks guys, your comments appreciated and thanks Siber Systems for a great offer.
VLM Michelle,
Great day, great responses!
Just to document, I placed an order yesterday for 2 desktop licenses, then went back today to place another order for 2 desktop and 1 GS2Go license. But your server would not let me place the second order, presumably because I'm paying by MO and the first order is still pending in your system. I wrote to support many hours ago (ticket #80371, order #1202202116) but received no reply. I would appreciate your help resolving this.
Thank you kindly!
Not necessarily. I use Goodsync to sync certain folders between my desktop Windows PC and my Linux file server, and it works beautifully, running on the Windows side only. Only if you want to take advantage certain advanced features like BitTorrent-like "block level synchronization syncs" do you need GS running as client and server, and a licensed copy on both Windows machines. See the third bullet here: http://www.goodsync.com/support/faq. GS has been an important and dependable part of my automated file archiving and backup routine since version 5.
This means that if we create a new version (such as GoodSync Version 10) then you will have to pay for the upgrade. We offer free updates within a version though, so all of the updates we make in V9 are completely free to those who purchase V9. We just released V9 earlier this year, so upgrading to a major version is not something that you will have to worry about anytime soon. We offer discounts on major version upgrades as well, for future reference.
Siber Systems @w wood and @lemonade soda,
What @David Gilmour said is correct. You only need one license per computer in which GoodSync is running. If you sync one computer to another and they are connected via a local area network, then you only need one license and run GoodSync from one computer. If you are trying to sync GoodSync from two non-connected computers, you can sync via GoodSync connect, which does require GoodSync be running on both computers, and therefore would require two licenses.
Changes in files are automatically detected by comparing current file status to the stored file status, so no OS-based file monitoring is required.
This is a ridiculous policy. Why don't they just sell the software with two licenses or one license equals two computer installs? It defeats the whole point. Tricky marketing, IMO. I've trialed GoodSync several times and it's not nearly as good as the freeware program 'FreeFileSync' .....
You must have not read my response to this. You only need one license per computer in which GoodSync is running. If you sync one computer to another and they are connected via a local area network, then you only need one license and run GoodSync from one computer. If you are trying to sync GoodSync from two non-connected computers, you can sync via GoodSync connect, which does require GoodSync be running on both computers, and therefore would require two licenses.
Thanks for your suggestions but please note that comments posted here should be related to GoodSync and questions about the GoodSync software only. All other comments will not be pursued, thank you.
I mean something else: if i backup or sync using Syncback, after backup or syncing, Syncback perform a testing operation and read/compare all written backup files to verify that target files are copied without error's.Of course this verify step extends the time of large backups significantly, but I prefer safety rather than speed!
Errors might occur exceptional, caused by non correctable HDD write/read errors, or filesystem errors.
For me SyncBack Pro is oké, but you know, my friends are looking for same value for less money ;-)
lemonade soda Let's just clarify that license issue:
1./ If you use Goodsync to backup or sync over a LAN you can do that with just one license so long as the software is only installed once, on one machine, and all backup or syncing is scheduled from that single machine.
2./ If you use Goodsync to backup or sync over a WAN (computers connected over the internet) you need a licence on each machine.
3./ If you use Goodsync to backup from machine A to machine B using a USB stick as the transfer media then you use a different product, Goodsync2Go, and only one license is needed. However, if you use Goodsync you would need 2 licenses.
I do understand Gerry's comment above. Goodsync needs 2 licenses to work over WAN, and that wasn't particularly clear in the original info. Personally, this is where I find Goodsync interesting and useful over 1001 other freeware alternatives.
Unfortunately, you can't use Goodsync for backing up from a webserver to a local machine, or use it to backup a local machine to a fileserver without spending $995 for a "server" license. Try to link two office fileservers and you will need 2x $995 even if all you are doing is making the most rudimentary backups or syncing.
I don't understand that pricing. Microsoft server licenses include FRS and DFS if you use Active Directory. So Goodsync is only useful for people NOT in an enterprise environment. So therefore $995 is silly, and quite honestly, the same pricing $30, should be used.
However, they are not as responsive as you are, and I am still waiting for them to reply to my email. If you are unable, because you are unauthorised, to discuss your enterprise products, then I understand the departmental and political limitations of what you are able to talk about within your role. But commanding that the issue about making WAN sync work "it is not something to be discussed here" is rather pompous, and does not create a good impression with target customers.
Your cheapest option is to buy the two Windows licenses and one Mac license here on Bits du Jour. Our Mac version costs $10 more than the Windows version, so that is why you are seeing the $19.95 price for Mac when you go to check out. You will pay $14.95 for the Windows license, $9.95 for the second Windows license, and $19.95 for the Mac license.
DroidLuvr Absolutely well worth the price!! Actually, it can't be beat (I paid much more when I purchased this to go along with my RoboForm earlier this year!) I manage my backups to external HDDs just fine with one license as I don't have any remote PCs or anything that I need to install the server on.
It is a great program, and the dev. updates it regularly to correct any bugs that are found. Their support is also absolutely fantastic with very fast response times.
Just my 2 cents as a regular here :)
Colin McAllister Hi.
I am very wary now about syncing data, rather than just "dumb-backing" it up...
I recently had sync software which (badly) synced folders from my hard drive to my usb backup drive.
Folders on my hard drive were left empty - which I hadn't noticed - and the very next sync copied the empty hard drive folders over the usb drive and my data was gone. Fortunately, I had a second online backup, so I got almost all of my original files back.
From past experience, one folder is always considered master, so can Goodsync prevent empty master folders overwriting slave folders containing data? Thanks.
Hi, you can actually edit the number inside the Quantity box. Right now it should say 1, you can delete the number and choose how many licenses you would like.
Siber Systems @Colin,
I am not sure exactly what you are trying to do with the software. It seems like you trying to create a backup job, but instead you are syncing your data. If you create a sync job, the folder on the left will sync to the folder on the right, whenever you schedule it to sync. Therefore, if you change one folder it will automatically change the other folder so that both of these folders can be the same.
Here is more information on sync: http://www.goodsync.com/h...ronization
Here is more information on backup: https://www.goodsync.com/...ile-backup
Colin McAllister Hi.
I had set folders to sync from HDD to usb backup drive. The folders on the HDD were empty due to a windows explorer glitch - I'm guessing it "cut" instead of "copy". Explorer also crashes every time it is asked to search for anything.
So those empty HDD folders then later synced, overwriting the folders on the usb drive and leaving me with 2 sets of very empty folders. I was hoping that GoodSync might be clever enough to prevent empty folders overwriting folders containing several files?
A very unusual situation, i know, but almost catastrophic when it occurred. New pc is on its way, so hopefully no glitches in future, but odd/annoying that empty folders could overwrite full folders. I'd hoped for a fail-safe; something like "If folder is empty, cancel sync (for that folder)"
Siber Systems @Colin,
There is a setting you can use for that. Just go to Job, Options, General tab. In the general tab there is a box called "Propagate deletions," just uncheck that box and nothing will be deleted if a file or folder is deleted.
I bought Goodsync solely for its block-level sync feature. Unfortunately that does not work in my test and your PDF-manual does not contain a single time the word "block". A support request on your website kept unanswered until now.
Could you have one of your supporters answer my question?
How to enable block-level? If there is no switch: In which cases is it used (automatically) and especially in which cases /not/?
My Name Here Still very confused about this: I have 3 PCs on a LAN (a home LAN using a Windows workgroup, not a domain).
Siber Systems @My Name Here,
If everything is networked with that server then you will be able to access all of the files and folders from any computer on that network from a single computer. You would only need one license.
If you wanted to use GoodSync Connect to sync three laptops in different locations using the internet connection, that would require a license for each computer. But because all of your machines are on the same local area network (LAN) you can accomplish what you want to do with a single license.
Bruno Verschraegen Hi. I would be interested if it can sync a standalone Outlook file (pst, we do not have Exchange) bi-directionally. The GoodSync FAQ states: "GoodSync does not yet understand internal structure of all these database files (this will change in the future versions). So GoodSync can sync the whole database files, but not individual logical units stored inside these files."
Is this the current state or is a solution being implemented in the current version or in the very (very) near future? And does/will it work with Outlook being locked?
Siber Systems Hi everyone,
Thanks for your questions. If computers are connected in one local network you can sync files between them (including external HDs) using shared folders when GoodSync is installed on one of the computers. You must have full access permissions on shared folders, be able to open shared folders, create/copy/delete a file there. Note, that synchronization could be running only from one computer where GoodSync is installed.
If you want to run sync from any computer you have to either install GoodSync on each computer (5 licenses) or use GoodSync2Go installed on any portable drive (1 GoodSync2Go license). GS2Go can be purchased on our Web site at http://www.goodsync.com.
If you want to sync files over the Internet using GoodSync Connect you need a license for each computer with which you want to sync.
For example, you can sync files between two computers when GoodSync is installed on one computer if computers are connected in local network. If computers are not connected in a local network then you can sync files between them using GoodSync Connect account via the Internet. If the computers are not connected in a local network then you would need a GS license for each computer that you wish to sync using GS Connect.
Bruno Verschraegen Hi Michelle, I actually referred to your FAQ... My question was if there had been progress in this area.
From what I read, the bi-directional challenge has
nothing to do with the PST being locked but with Siber Systems not (yet) understanding the internal structure of database files such as Outlook. And the FAQ states "this will change in future versions". So part of my question was if progress is being made with that.
The FAQ statement continues "So GoodSync can sync whole database files, but not individual logical units stored inside these files". My backup software is able to make incremental backups of Outlook (on an hourly basis, and even with the PST being open = locked), so I assume there are ways for programmes to see what are the small changes within the big Outlook database file?
The second question was related to the ability of working with locked files. Further down in your FAQ, you state "New GoodSync versions can copy from locked files using Shadow Copy. Be sure to turn on Copy Locked Files option in Job Options." This would lead to believe that at least whole database PST copying should be possible, even if locked. On the other hand, a little further down, referring to error statements, the FAQ indicates for Volume Shadow Copy that "It can only copy FROM a locked file but NOT TO a locked file." OK, fair enough. But it also says "It can only copy from a file on a LOCAL DRIVE, not from a file on the network." Does this mean the functionality only works for copying files within the same machine - which is not the purpose of using GoodSync?" Sorry if I sound confused; I guess I am...
You receive free updates within the purchased version and if we release Version 10 or another version within a reasonable amount of time frame you may receive the next version upgrade free. I have VMware virtual machine guest files, which include virtual-disk files. For example, a file called DISK-C.VMDK might represent drive C: of the virtual machine and is about 20GB in size.
I want to do backups of DISK-C.VMDK but don't want to copy the entire file, just want to copy the portions of the file that have changed. Can you GoodSync software update only the changed portions of DISK-C.VMDK. This is especially important when updating to a remote destination, to minimize how much data is being sent. Siber Systems Hi @Dillon,
Job-Options-Advanced.
There is two options to handle symbolic links.
From GoodSync manual:
Folder Symbolic Links Processing (Copy As Is by default)
This option determines how symbolic links to folders are processed.
* Ignore. Symlinks to folders are ignored and not copied in any way.
* Copy As Is. Symlink to folder is copied as the same Symlink in the destination folder.
* Drill Down. Target folder of symbolic link is be copied to the destination folder.
File Symbolic Links Processing (Copy As Is by default)
This option determines how symbolic links to files are processed.
* Ignore. Symlinks to files are ignored and not copied in any way.
* Copy As Is. Symlink to file is copied as the same Symlink in the destination folder.
* Drill Down. Target file of symbolic link is copied to the destination folder.
Michael Howard Hello! GoodSync sounds like what I've been looking for. Number of licenses seems simple, but isn't. Please let me know if I have this right:
First license: Allows me to sync 1 computer (GoodSync server 1) to all other computers (clients) on my LAN (one-way synching only).
Second license: Allows me to do the above, but ALSO synch one of the above computers (GoodSync server 1) via Internet bi-directionally with yet another computer(GoodSync server 2) which is not on my LAN.
...and it doesn't matter if they're Mac, Win, or Linix boxes?
ARTYONE Hello. Similar question to Michael.
I find the license setup a bit hard to get my head around.
This is what I want to do::
In our house we have 3 pc computers and 2 macs along with an android tablet.
I want to sync all the photos and downloaded files from each device to my mac mini which will have 2 or 3 external drives attached to store all the photos etc.
So the mac mini is the main computer, so I guess I need to buy 1 mac licence to do the above.
What if I need to access the sync jobs to modify or add to from the mac mini via one of the pcs?
Would I then need a pc licence for each of the pcs (3) just so I can add a new sync job?
Time is running out to buy this (7 more hours) so please advise asap or extend the offer to those of us that are waiting for your feedback
Many thanks
Dierk Downloaded & Installed the GoodSync application & up popped the "Configure Windows User" and "Welcome to GoodSync Connect Setup" windows.
Also ran across the "FAQ"; "How to Sync 2 Folders"; and the GoodSync Manual web pages.
Plowed through the above, as well as the "Welcome ... Let's Create Your First Job" dialogs, resulting in a simple Sync job: 2 systems, connected via internal network (WiFi), looking for a 2-way Sync of data files for a single application.
Thoughts along the way:
You can set up a "simple" sync job with relative ease. Learning about the many Options offered seems likely to consume a fair amount of time & effort - but is probably worth it in the long run.
Because of these Options, spending some time with the Manual - or at least playing around with the application - should be factored into the purchase decision.
There CAN BE some confusion with Licensing / Usage: the first thing you find under "GoodSync Connect" is "Install on each of your systems" - which means purchasing multiple licenses.
HOWEVER: you CAN achieve 2-way sync WITHOUT installing "Connect" - as long as your systems can "see" each other - and the appropriate directories - across your network. (Interestingly, had to specifically "Share" the remote folder for GoodSync, even though have been Manually "syncing" these two folders using a file manager.)
Apparently (from a quick glance at the lit) "Connect" will offer advanced usage options, including connectivity when you might otherwise NOT be able to see the system(s) you are trying to sync with. There are a number of scenarios shown in the lit.
Disappointment that Per Computer licensing is required (seems like there should at least be a "One desktop & one Laptop option), is somewhat offset by the fact that secondary licenses appear to be offered at a substantial discount on the GoodSync web site (Under $10, per memory), plus the fact that many users won't require them at all, as long as you can get your Windows Share permissions working. (Which can be a lot of FUN at times, particularly across multiple OSs: both of the systems tried this evening are running Win 7.)
In any case, it is time for a somewhat late dinner here, so will ruminate for a bit - but GoodSync is probably A Keeper, at least given the Bits Discount offer!
Sam Hi Michelle,
The website states that for GoodSync Connect "The communication channel between your computers may be encrypted using SSL, so nobody will be able to snoop in on your transfers." So does it mean that it is not always encrypted? I browsed through the website but could not figure out what kind of encryption you use (128 or 256 bit) and the protocol behind the connection, when connecting computers using GoodSync connect. Can you please share some information on the security underlying file transfers using GoodSync connect as that is of primary importance when buying multiple licenses. I think it is great that we can sync without uploading the content to private servers however if the connection is not encrypted or "sometimes encrypted" it would be easy for someone to get hold of the data.
Thanks,
Sam
Thanks for pointing this out. We actually decided to re-word this on the website after you brought this to our attention. It now says, "Users have an option to choose Secure Mode to ensure the communication channel between your computers is encrypted using SSL."
What this means is that the user has to choose for it be a secure connection in order for it be a secure connection. There is an option where you can check "Secure Mode (encrypted)."
Sam Hi Michelle,
Sorry if this is a repeated post, I did try to edit the last post but it seems that it may not have worked. I just wanted to let you know that the website link from this page seems to land you on a very old page without any navigational links. It may be better to change the link as the new website is well organized.
Thanks,
Chintan Karnik @Siber Systems: Is it possible to use and activate goodsync 9 pro on a win2k8 server? I realize that there is a separate enterprise product, but the current feature set of the desktop version is all I need. Specifically, I want to be able to use GoodSync connect Instead of settting up sftp, rsync etc on the server. You folks have developed an excellent syncing client-server product that should be available on its own without add-ons.
a a Also, GoodSync 9 was released approx. 16 months ago, so I would expect a v10 to be released reasonably soon. Would I get a free upgrade to 10 if I purchase now ?
Alternatively, what is the grace period for when I would get a free upgrade (eg. if v10 is released in 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, would I get a free upgrade?) ?
Siber Systems Hi @a a,
Although GS9 was created 16 months ago, we are only on version 9.4.9.9 of the software, so a GS10 release anytime soon is very unlikely. However, if we did release GS10 within a reasonable amount of time after you purchased GS9 it is very likely that you would get this upgrade for free. However, since it is not in our developers plans as of right now I cannot give you a yes or no answer. I apologize. Thanks!
ARTYONE Hi, Well I still am not sure of the number of licences I need but went and purchased 2 for mac, 2 for pc and the USB option.
Is the usb option usable on both a mac and pc? The receipt says for mac?
Will the USB/Portable HD option work with our Android tablets?
I will make a start at installing these on our computers over the next week or two and hopefully there are enough to go around.
If I need more copies say within the next month, would you still do them for the $5 and $10 add on prices?
looking forward to a well backed up system :)
Many thanks for replying to the questions, great to see a company thats in touch with its clients
P.S. You may want to look at creating a special webpage thats in non tech talk outlining what licences each person may need for their needs.
Looking at the above comments, it is clear that the Licencing is not a clear issue for most.
I do not mind buying what I need, its just trying to work out what I need to work within your rules.
Siber Systems Hi @Artyone,
We have two separate licenses for the USB, one is Mac and one is Desktop. We have a GoodSync app in your Android App Market.
Each additional license price just depends on the previous purchase, there will be a discount but I cannot tell you how much. Pricing depends on your previous purchases and the licenses that you wish to buy. For our licenses priced at $29.95, your next three license purchases are usually $9.95 (as long as they are the same price). For our licenses priced at $39.95, your next three licenses are usually $19.95.
If you decide that you do not need a license that you purchased within 30 days, we are happy to refund your money. We have a 30 day money back guarantee. Please contact support if you have any additional questions at http://www.goodsync.com/support.
We do understand that the wording is confusing for our licensing structure and we will work on creating a website page that is user friendly. Thank you for your suggestions.
lemonade soda WARNING to TESS273 and others. (I noted that siber did not answer your Q). I bought this software last year and it is useless. Why? I am a one man band, and want to sync my laptop with my home-server when I'm on the road. Goodsync seemed ideal for this with its block sync for more efficient and therefore quicker file transfers. My fileserver is an old recycled W2K3 machine acting as a "dumb" fileserver. It is very basic and doesnt have domain or AD services etc. Nowhere was there any warning from the BDJ offer, but if you try to install on W2K, W2K3 - even without a domain and AD - it will refuse and demand an ENTERPRISE LICENSE for $995. That's right! Even though I only want the basic trivial features of the regular version, and that is what I bought and paid for, it REFUSES to install on my home server unless I pay an addition $995. NO I dont have enterprise services, no I don't run a domain or active directory, no I don't have 1000's users, no I don't need Sibers additional "server console features", no I won't pay you another $995 just to run a very trivial remote sync. I got scammed.
Conclusion: there are free alternatives, I was using them before, but purchased Goodsync for block sync, but it was wasted time and money. BTW did you know that IF you have windows server running on a domain that Active Directory Replication to do this is available out of the box and for FREE from MS!!!! So there is absolutely no reason for Siber to be demanding $995 for SOHO users like us that DONT run domains or active directory.
Mark Johnson @lemonade soda -- what you experienced with GoodSync is not out of the ordinary for a lot of software.
I work as a software architect and have a lot of different operating systems installed on different machines (real or virtual machines). One thing I learned many years ago is that a lot of software for the standard user operating systems will not install or operate on server operating systems. For many pieces of software you have to have a special server version (ALWAYS much more expensive) if you want to install it on a server operating system.
My recommendation would be to not use a server operating system for the scenario you describe. If you do, you'll end up with the same type of problem in the future with other software.
However, Siber systems should list the operating systems each version of their software operates on.
Siber Systems Hi @lemonade soda,
That is true, our Enterprise department does have a server license for $995 that we require for anyone running a server. Our software can't tell the difference if it is an individual running a server or an Enterprise running a server with thousands of employees, so there is only one price. So you are correct, our software is probably not the best fit for an individual running a server.
Thanks,
Michelle
lemonade soda As a word of warning, even though it doesnt say this in any obvious place on their website, this software works only on "consumer Windows OS" and will not work on a home server OS such as WHS or W2K3 which are quite popular for home/SOHO servers/archiving/filesystems. I use W2K3 as a plain and simple windows file share, no domain or ACLs, but the goodsync software will balk and demand a $999 license to install on any "server" edition of Windows, even though there is an enterprise version of Goodsync with additional features, they dont let you use the regular limited features on a server OS. It's a poor decision by the developer, because at a much lower cost you can get W2K12 R2 Essentials with its inbuilt cloud and file syncing services AND EVERYTHING ELSE it has to offer.
Dave Doiron This from the fine print is the deal breaker:
"ALL NEW GoodSync 9 is licensed **per computer,** and not per user."
The stated use for the software is to keep all our computers (as in more than 1`) in sync, so we need a copy for each of our computers. This means we're going to have to buy at least 2 copies, so the price of the software is at minimum 2x$14.95 = $29.90.
VLM One technical question, just to be abundantly clear: The description, above, states "GoodSync Connect, which allows users to connect two or more computers directly, in a peer-to-peer style, without using intermediate servers to store files (online storage services". I find the phrase "in a peer-to-peer style" a bit confusing. Does GS Connect flow through the developer's own servers, or does it implement a genuinely and entirely local P2P connection?
Techtoysavvy @VLM I have used Goodsync 9 in an entirely local P2P connection.
That said, if you are not sure how to connect 2 computers across the internet then the developer facilitates this by allowing both peers to connect to their server in order to find each other. Once connected there is no need to send data to a facilitating server. If you know how to connect 2 computers then you don't need help from a third computer.
Siber Systems Hi Roger - I pulled this from our manual for you regarding FTP:
Remote FTP server.
Naming convention: URL with ftp:// or ftps:// prefix, example: ftp://server.domain.com/folder1/folder2
Extended naming convention adds port, auth data: ftp://userid:passwordserver.domain.com:port/folder
UserID and Password are usually required.
If UserID and Password are empty, GoodSync uses UserID "anonymous" and Password "gsusersomeplace.com"
Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks!
Thanks!
Sep 2 2014 at 3:22pm Copy Link
Techtoysavvy @VLM over a LAN is relatively simple with no need for GoodSync connect. It is more challenging to connect across the internet. This can involve NAT, routers, port forwarding and firewalls. In these cases it makes more sense to use Goodsync Connect to mediate the connection.
I am lucky enough to have a VPN into my home so I can connect back to my desktop for sync when I am remote and it all looks like the LAN.
Carl Dolc Hola:
Creo que hay una incongruencia con la siguiente frase o por favor expliquenme un poco mas que es lo que significa:
ALL NEW GoodSync 9 is licensed per computer, and not per user.
Con la frase anterior entiendo que si compro una licencia la puedo usar en solo uno de mis equipos, lo cual es una incongruencia con la finalidad del programa porque si quiero sincronizar mis datos debo de conectar por lo menos con dos equipos pero la licencia no me lo permite, con lo cual debo de adquirir una licencia mas (o el mismo numero de licencias para el mismo numero de equipos) y esto estaría encareciendo enormemente el gasto para poder sincronizar mis datos, ¿¿estoy en lo correcto o entendí mal el concepto??
Siber Systems @Carl
I understand that you have a question about our licensing.
GoodSync requires one license per computer that is running GoodSync.
If you want to sync two or more computers on a network with GoodSync, you still only need to run GoodSync on one computer, therefore you only need one license.
However, if you need to use our GoodSync Connect feature to sync two or more computers that are not connected, then GoodSync would need to run on each computer in this case, and therefore you your be required to purchase a license for each computer.
Carl Dolc ¡Gracias por responderme!
Tengo dos dudas mas:
1.- ¿¿Hasta cuantos equipos puedo conectar en una red GoodSync?
2.- ¿Puedo conectar mis equipos desde ubicaciones diferentes (casa/oficina) con la misma licencia?
Esto lo pregunto porque poseo 3 equipos, uno en la oficina y dos en casa y me gustaria que todos estuvieran sincronizados
May 18 2015 at 11:21am Copy Link
Siber Systems @Carl
The number of computers in a network does not matter. What does matter is how many computers are actually running GoodSync to execute the sync tasks. If you use one computer to run GoodSync for the network, then you would only be required to have a license for that computer.
To connect computers from different locations you may need to utilize our GoodSync Connect feature which would require a license for each computer. If the computers in different locations are connected via some type of network connection, and you don't need to utilize GoodSync Connect, then you would only require a license for the computer/s actually running GoodSync.
GoodSync only syncs to folders/directories on your computer that you tell it to. You can choose not to sync the folder that has all your pictures in it. There's also other exclusion options. We have a section in our manual here - http://www.goodsync.com/m...inclusions.
1. An upgrade I understand as moving to the next higher MAJOR version, i.e. 10.0. Version 9 has been on the market since December 2011, so this looks like a late-in-cycle sale, before releasing new major version shortly (requiring an additional payment for the upgrade!). Do you have any roadmap available, when version 10 would be released?
2. What does it mean, that my license key could be invalidated. Am I losing my right to use the software then??? Shall I be told during the installation process, that by installing this version I would lose my license and I will be given an opportunity to abort the installation?
The consumer version of GoodSync cannot. But the server version can (not included in this deal). Here's a page that describes GoodSync for NAS.
Yes, upgrading to a new version of GoodSync would require you to purchase an upgrade if:
1) You wanted and needed the upgrade (it's completely optional and will be offered at a discounted price)
2) If you hadn't purchased GoodSync within XX months of an upgrade
I mention XX months because we don't have an upgrade date yet or know how many months we'll go back and grant free upgrades. I believe the last time we released a major upgrade of GoodSync we offered free upgrades for anyone who purchased within the last 8 months.
But again, whatever version that users purchase will continue to work until they decide to upgrade. If a user inadvertently updates to the next major version, we'll have links to previous version that they can simply reinstall.
Doug Atkinson I use GoodSync for backups with a two-tiered system. As I accumulate new photos, videos, and documents on my PC, I manually copy them in an organized fashion to my external hard drive. Then periodically, I sync that hard drive to a 2nd hard drive using GoodSync. For my "work" directory, I sync that to a backup drive direct from my computer as well. As with any backup software, you need to be careful of your settings and double-check your synchronization direction before you hit the 'go' button - but GoodSync has worked well for me for several years now. Note that GoodSync has both Backup and Synchronization capabilities - be sure your understand the differences! As stated, the updates are frequent, but the major version number has been at v9 for quite some time - so all of those updates are free.
John Oliver Hi,
You say
"The number of computers in a network does not matter. What does matter is how many computers are actually running GoodSync to execute the sync tasks. If you use one computer to run GoodSync for the network, then you would only be required to have a license for that computer."
.
What if WINDOWS and MAC computers are on the same network?
1) Would one license still work or would one be need for a MAC and one for a WINDOWS based computer?
2)a) Are you guys thinking of supporting ANDROID devices too such as tablets and mobile phones?
2)b) Same question ( as above ) but for other APPLE devices such as iPad, iPhone and tablets?
Thanks for the follow-up question. Here's how it's easiest to think about it. If you can see and access files on different computers on your home/work network, then you only need to have a license on the computer that is running GoodSync. If you can't see and access another computer and need to use one of GoodSync's protocols to do it, such as GoodSync Connect, then you would need a license per computer.
We do support Android and iOS. Here's a link to our Platform page.
A follow up question on NAS usage with Goodsync.
Which of the following license do I need to buy for a Synology NAS:
1) GoodSync for Linux
OR
2) GoodSync Enterprise Server
I am guessing it is 1) but just wanted to confirm?
S G Can you tell me how the program handles situations where a folder has been renamed or moved?
For example, I have folders Alex, Barbara, and Charlie under C:/ and I sync to my NAS so now both have these folders.
Next, I rename Barbara to Becky on C:/. Will GoodSync rename Barbara to Becky on the NAS or will it delete Barbara on the NAS and copy Becky onto the NAS?
Similarly, If I move Charlie from c:/Charlie to c:/Alex/Charlie... On the NAS, will it delete Charlie in one location and copy a new version, or just move the folder on the NAS to the correct location?
Also, if there is an error copying a file during sync, does it continue with the rest of the job or will it require user intervention?
Yes, you can use GoodSync for Linux. Please note that GoodServer on Linux NAS is free to use for now. However, we will require that a user purchases a GoodSync license at some point, but not a server license.
GoodSync detects file/folder moves/renames and propagates them as such. If GoodSync detects an error or conflict it will ask the user to resolve the error.
Doug Lietz Can you tell me if I need one or two licenses for the following scenario...
When I am at home, I use my desktop computer, with a licensed copy of GoodSync installed. I would keep my laptop synced with my desktop so that when I am called away on a trip, I can simply grab my laptop and go. No one would be using my Desktop computer when I am away.
On my trip when I am away from home and using my laptop, I would like to be able to push changes back to my desktop computer at home, using an internet connection. Would I need to have a licensed copy of GoodSync installed on my laptop as well?
Hi Siber-
Sorry if I was not clear.
If a primary and secondary location are already synchronized with Goodsync. Then a folder is moved or renamed at the primary location (but all the files in the folder have not changed). When synchronizing again to the secondary location, will Goodsync delete the moved or renamed folder from its original position on the secondary drive and then get a new copy of the data from the source? Or will it perform a move at the secondary location?
I am asking because if I have a folder with 500GB of data which has already been synchronized with my backup drive, and I rename or move it, I am trying to determine if I will be recopying 500GB of data to the backup drive. Clearly copying will take a long time, while moving will only take seconds.
----------------------
Siber wrote: "If GoodSync detects an error or conflict it will ask the user to resolve the error."
---------------------
I understand it will ask, but my question is will it continue to perform the rest of the synchronization or will it stop and wait for me to answer.
As an example, if I begin a sync of 500 GB of changed data at midnight and go to bed, but the second file Goodsync is synchronizing has been changed at both locations (so it needs user intervention), will I wake up and find the program stopped and waiting for my input with only the first file synced? Or will it have synced the other 499 GB of data that did not have a conflict or error?
May 21 2015 at 6:34am Copy Link
Siber Systems @S G
GoodSync will just rename the folder at the destination location.
For example, I just tested it to double-check. I renamed a folder from A to B. That folder had 178 items including other folders in it. When I clicked Analyze GoodSync recognized the change. I clicked Sync and GoodSync performed the sync. Only two items had changed and it was completed in :02.
In regards to your conflict question, GoodSync performs two steps, Analyze and Sync. The error or conflict will be detected during the Analyze step, so you will have to let GoodSync know what to do before beginning the sync.
Doug Atkinson SG: I haven't personally dealt with that, but in looking at the configuration options, it looks like you can choose how you want Goodsync to operate. I found a "Automatically Resolve Conflicts" setting, which allows: "Do Not Copy; Left Side Wins; Right Side Wins; Newer Files Win; Stop Sync", and there is also a checkbox for unattended operation. So it seems you can set it how you want, but you'd want to be careful of the possible consequences. Perhaps Siber will have a more definitive answer.
Thanks for jumping in. Yes, GoodSync does have a ton of configuration options. I was basing my answer on the default setting where the user resolves the conflict.
@ S G
If you would like to continue the discussion re: GoodSync's options, it may be better to take the conversation offline and contact our support team directly. They can provide much more detailed technical answers if necessary.
You also have the option to download the software from our site and try it out and play with the options. Then you can come back to Bits and buy the license once you confirm it meets your needs.
S G Siber & Doug-
Thanks for the info. I generally do not like to use anything that "automatically" resolves conflicts... seems too risky in most cases. However, if GoodSync addresses the conflicts in the analyze stage, that is probably OK, since it would be at the beginning of the process.
Also, the fact that it moves the data for renamed files and does not re-copy is very good.
I have done some further research, and for others with this question, it appears that the file system on both machines must be NTFS or the entire file will need to be re-copied, regardless of what program you use.
Doug Atkinson I've been using GoodSync for many years now as my primary program to keep my two backup drives in sync. I pretty much manually backup files from my computer hard drive to my backup drive #1 so that I can properly categorize the files into their proper folders. Then I periodically use GoodSync to synchronize backup #1 to a secondary backup drive. With Ransomware viruses on the rise, it is more and more important that you keep backups of the data on your computer, and that you DO NOT keep your backup drive connected all the time. If you do get Ransomware, many of them will encrypt not just your local drive, but all attached drives as well. In any case, I can highly recommend GoodSync.
You only need one license for the computer that is running GoodSync. So if you are syncing two or more computers on the same network and using one computer to run the sync jobs, then you only need one license because GoodSync does not need to be running on the other computers in order for it to sync.
However, if you are syncing two or more remote computers using our GoodSync Connect feature, the you'll be required to have GoodSync running on each computer and will need more than one license.
Richard Blake I often rename files, move files from one directory to another, and [less often] rename or move directories. If I simply did this on one computer and then let GoodSync go to work I would get a mess. To keep things organized I believe I should perform such actions through the GoodSync interface, i.e. tell GoodSync what I want done. It would then perform the requested action immediately on the computer I am using. It would perform the same action on the target computer, external drive, NAS or whatever immediately or when it next becomes accessible (e.g. when I take my laptop home and connect to my home network, where the other computer or NAS resides. Does GoodSync offer this feature?
Richard Blake @Jon User, I don't think you need to install the personal edition on a server in order to back up files that reside there. Install the personal edition of GoodSync onto a workstation. From there map drive letter(s) to the server share(s) where the data files are (or to the NAS or wherever the files are located). Then you can back up or mirror those files to a different drive to produce your copies.
Siber, do you concur?
1. Yes, it would be one license per GoodSync installation.
2. This would depend on how your jobs are configured. You may set up a network share on the unlicensed computers to allow the licensed computers to sync with, as an example.
3. Yes. Licensing covers all drives connected to that computer.
4. You can configure GoodSync Connect to allow your iPhone and iPad to access data on those computers.
For more details on setup and configuration, please issue a support ticket to our portal and one of our technicians can help you in this process.
Siber Systems @Jon User @Richard Blake That's correct. You can install the personal edition on a workstation and map the server share.
