What are people saying about Hard Disk Manager 16 Advanced

David H (Seattle) Fantastic deal on a great disk tool, I've used it for many years through many versions. The WinPE recovery disk alone was worth the price when I could easily load my RAID driver during the backup / recovery of a troublesome array. PLUS it also allowed me to "slipstream" new drivers into another restore operation onto new hardware, when a faulty PSU took out the MB and almost everything else - made the old system instantly bootable and usable again. Recommended if you don't have any serious tools already, or if looking for something more featured. Backup, recovery, wiping, partitioning, RE-partitioning, aligning, migrating to virtual and back, 2 types of bootable recovery disks, etc, it's all there.

eb235 Something unclear about the exact extension of the license.
If I follow this : "get the latest version of the software app sold under the same terms as a regular sale, just at a great promotional price" (BDJ's terms), the license for advanced package extends to 3 computers : "Advanced package which: Covers up to three personal computers" (Paragon's site).
But BDJ's fine print also says "licensed per computer, not per user"
I would welcome a clarification !

Christian User I currently have and like hard disk manager 15 professional. Is this equal to or better than that? I get that it's newer I don't want to lose any features that might've been part of a higher grade of the same product.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Christian

K "I currently have and like hard disk manager 15 professional."
@Christian_User if you like HDM15, DO NOT update to v.16!
It is completely different, and many of the functionalities of v.15 have been removed. This was discovered to be a useless version when a disaster struck last month, and has caused on Pro user to cancel with long-term use.
I suggest you keep v.15, and happily use functions v.16 denies you :-)

eb235 @K Thank you but if the deal is for "the software app sold under the same terms as a regular sale", HDM v16 Advanced allows installation on three computers (not partitions or VMs). In other words, the wording of BDJ's fine print is probably inaccurate.

Continuing with my investigations, I also found that the list of supported platforms is wrong : all Windows editions before 7 are abandoned by HDM v16. Agreed, I assumed that "Show platforms" means "Show supported platforms", but I can't be wrong on that, can I ?

Lastly I assume the removed functions of HDM v15 went into HDM v15 Premium --starting at $599, it is definitely slanted towards professionals... But only K could tell.

K @eb235 I had Paragon HDM recommended to me by a pro user of v.15. Their experience, on upgrading to v.16 was that they could no longer use it on VMs and partitioned OS drives after the change. After that, sorry I can't say.

Those using the "higher functions" in v.15 would be wise to ask lots of questions, and try a trial version of v.16, before upgrading, would be my suggestion. Good luck with your purchase.

BrianS Hard Disk Mgr 16 Advanced does not appear to have the VM, P2V, V2P features contained in Hard Disk Mgr 15 Professional, which previously retailed for $99.00 and now seems to be the end of the road for Paragon products at that price point containing these VM features.

Lito Yeah I got free upgrades to HDM 16 from paragon but it looks as if I have the basic version. It should be advanced since it's HDM 15 pro license not basic. So I reinstalled my HDM 15 Pro and use that since it works better. Supposedly to even convert a MBR to a GPT or vice versa requires advance of HDM 16, but there is no way to upgrade your basic to advance with HDM 16 that I could find on paragon's website. Worst part is there is NO indication you have the basic edition or the advanced version so be sure to test it immediately if you buy this. Just try to convert a GPT or MBR to the other format just don't go through with the operation. If you can't find a way to do that then you have the basic edition. All the screen shots shown here are exactly the same as my version which is NOT advanced. Personally, I think you might be better off trying to get HDM 15 Pro.

Hourglass94 I like this software but can't find a way to auto shutdown after restoring a single backup. This was an easy process in previous versions.

It's a step backwards for me.

H. H. @paragon
questions
1. what features of version 16 have not been included in version 15?
2. is the fine print at bdj correct?
it says, that no license activation is required, but at the german paragon website
a hardware dependent activation process is desribed
or is this different between german and english versions?

thank you for clarifying in advance

Petr @ lisba f I checked their new website and found the features list here: https://www.paragon-softw...m-windows/

Features to note:
.. Back-and-Restore that enables resizing partitions on restore devices.
.. Support for ALL Windows disk schemes and file systems for both backups and disk partitioning.

The only features I wish Paragon HDM 16 had, that's found in Shadow Protect, is a very fast (and light load on the computer) ability to do incremental snapshots in real-time (without scanning the entire hard drive). Although Shadow Protect has this great feature, I find Paragon HDM much more reliable when it comes to restoring a backup of a complicated setup (dual boot & multiple drives and partitions).

Gr3gw I have used Hard Disk Manger for 10+ years. The interface has always been awkward but the engine is fantastic and reliable. I have the new version HDM16 with the 'brand new' interface adn, in my opinion, it is a load of crap. The engine is still fine but the brand new interface sucks.

The interface is now what I call a kindergarten interface - large text and images, barely any real information. The graphs showing partitions are so big that a lot of vertical and horizontal scrolling is involved.

The interface omits access to some vital information that the old interface displays - namely the partition lists in plain text.

The engine is faster and more reliable than HDM15 but the interface stinks.

If you've never used Hard Disk Manager before, by all means give it a go, you may like it. If you've used earlier versions and are coming back for a more recent version of HDM, you are in for a shock.

Another new feature that comes with the brand new interface is Universal Image Mounter. I think this enforces Paragon's software licencing. When I first got HDM16 it installed okay. More recently I had to uninstall before installing again. Should have been simple but Ive been without it for nearly three weeks. It won't allow me to provide my serial number. Sometimes over enthusiastic protection does more harm to the legitimate than the illegal. I've been in touch with Paragon support, lovely people BUT not the level of expertise needed to solve my problem. Pretty slow response times too.

If I wasn't being punished enough, the Paragon online ticketing system for support mashed up the record of my correspondence. Now I'm not sure I have a history of the contacts I've made over the last three weeks.

All I can say is that Paragon is not the company it used to be and Hard Disk Manager is not Hard Disk Manager.

Paragon Software @Gr3gw

Thanks you for your honest feedback.
We are sorry that you do not like our new user interface of Hard Disk Manager 16.
Indeed, we focused on a more simple interface. All features should be reachable pretty quickly and without looking for minutes to find them.

We are happy that you still like our functonalities and you even faced a faster engine, that's pretty cool.

Hope you stay tuned in our upcoming products.

Kind regards,

Your Paragon Software Group

Gr3gw Dear Paragon Rep,

I'm glad you took the message as I intended - as practical feedback and information for others.

If you are interested in my in-depth views on HDM16 and Paragon support, feel free to make contact. Not sure how you would do that but I am available. I would be very interested in providing constructive feedback to Paragon but need to talk with someone that was honestly interested in improving HDM16 and Paragon support.

I've been using Hard Disk Manage since version 5, that's over 10 years. I very much want Hard Disk Manager to be successful but with the latest release and the changes to customer/technical support, I'll be retiring HDM16 and looking for a replacement.

BitDuJour readers: don't take my word for it, try HDM16 for yourself.

Stephen Kreyling Question. The price of 79.00 is for the regular version, here it shows 79 regular price for the Advanced version. On your site paragon-software it shows the regular as 79 and you can upgrade to advanced.

What is the cost of the advanced to users already having version 16 or pro 15 of the hard disk manager?

Stephen

Lee H The license restriction for only 1 computer is a deal killer for me. I've got 4 personal desktops and 2 laptops I use for various reasons, and none at the same time. I change hardware frequently since my desktops are all custom built. I understand a programmer needs to protect their products but a hard disk manager is not a program that you use every day. But it can be a handy tool from time to time. Paragon needs to rethink their licensing strategy. There's not even an option to buy multiple licenses at a discount! So NO GO on this!
Jun 8 2018 at 2:32pm Copy Link
2
JW I'd like to echo Lee H's comment since I too have 3 PCs which get used for different purposes - but I'm just an elderly chap who plays with computers to keep the brain going - and not as a business making any income.
I choose to have HDM available for emergencies, and I buy the updates on the basis of just-in-case!!
I've been through the process of buying a family license (allows 3 PCs) but it's expensive for those very rare instances when I need to get myself back out of the fertiliser!!
Would it perhaps be possible to have a licensed portable version which could go on a USB pen drive (rather than onto a CD) to enable recovery of an errant HDD?
