Paragon Software Hi,

When we developed Hard Disk manager 2009 Suite, Window 7 was not yet available for testing, but as demonstrated by our recent tests program is compatable with Windows 7.

marek jedlinski I have an external 2TB WD My Book drive, connected via firewire, single NTFS partition.

The trial version of Paragon HD Manager shows this drive as having "7,9 GB not formatted" and the remaining space unallocated. Fixed drives are shown correctly, but the nonsensical detection of the external drive makes me rather uncomfortable about this software. It seems likely that any write operation to this drive using Paragon software would be catastrophic.

(Fwiw, MS management console shows the correct status for this drive).

Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite includes all features of Partition Manager, plus has advanced backup features, and has wiping feature.
Hard Disk Manager 2010 Suite doesn't have virtualization tools, while System Upgrade Utilities have them.

Tomasz Burger Can HDM 2010 manage visibility of partitions depending on OS started? Example: I've got 2 (A, B) installed OS and 4 partitions on hdd. As I understand HDM includes boot manager so I can choose to start OS A or OS B, but can I also specify that if I start OS A I want to see partitios 1,3 and hide partitions 2,4 ?

Paragon Software Hello Tomasz, Boot Manager has an option "Hide other primary partitions",you can enable it when activating Boot Manager. That means when you selectwhich OS to boot, only its primary partition will be visible, other primarypartitions will be hidden. It doesn't affect logical drives. This feature is also not available if you activate Boot Manager in Windows 7,cause Windows 7 may use special hidden "system preserved partition"(100 MB in size), so resetting hidden flags may render the system unbootable.

Tomasz Burger Hello Pavel,
I tried to find 'Hide other primary partitions' option in Boot Manager, but I could not. In HDM manual (ex. on Page 211) you mention about this option, but on the screenshot bellow - no such option - only possibility to choose between boot manager in Normal mode or Hidden mode.

Techtoysavvy Can Hard Disk Manager copy a 60G partition with 20G of data to a 40G partition. It must resize "on the fly" so to speak. When I tried to do this with the last offering I had to rezize the 60G partition to 40G, copy it to the target and then resize the original patition back to 60G. I remember being able to do this type of operation in one step. Am I missing something?

Rick Truell Tomasz: If you have the need to hide logical partitions, which Pavel says can't be done with HDM, you might want to consider BootIt Next Generation (BING) from http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ , who has had several products, including BING, available on BdJ recently. For each OS you configure to boot, you can select whether or not to hide all other partitions, primary or logical, on all drives available to the system. BING is a very nice boot manager and works well. In fact, when the free boot manager I had been using didn't work on a couple of new computers I'd picked up, I had no problems paying for BING when I found that it did everything the free one did (and then some) plus worked on the new computers!

bob roos I notice there is a backup and recovery suite and the HDM Suite says "backup" what are the differences?

Also I notice that there is 30 days complimentary support (same as Acronis).

How well does this backup stuff really work (to NAS for example)? Can it do full image backups? If so is the image "explorable"? That is can I recover 1 files out of it without restoring the whole image?

After my experiences with Acronis, I am looking for a qualilty backup solution that is flexible and works reliably.

Scott Hamilton I've been experimenting with this product in the Demo form. Seems good. Some cons: after-the-fact logs of events seems confusing, but I'll probably get used to it; the scheduled backups bring a window to the user's screen and have to click to get it to go away (maybe there is a parameter you can use to supress this, only digging will tell...); Makes multiple files in the backup device (instead of Acronis's neat single .TIB file); so far unclear how to set many 'settings' that I would have expected to be obvious. But I'm still playing with it. I'm certainly in for a single copy to have on hand -- lots of great features here in this suite.

Paragon Software Hello! By default the program creates backup images splitted into several files. They are more handy than 1 huge file when you need to copy backup to different location, and it's also needed for compatibility with older versions. You can change it in settings: run HDm in Full Scale Mode - upper menu Tools - Settings - Backup options.

Paragon Software For bob:
Both programs can create backups, format is the same so you can backup with one program, and restore it with second one: that doesn't matter.

You can create image backups (backup of partition, of system partition, or of entire hard disk), also you can create file backups (of some folder for example). Diffential and inremental backups are possible. You can save backup to network folder (to NAS, for example), to CD/DVD, yo local HDD, to external HDD, to special hidden partition (Backup Capsule). It's possible to browse backups with help of built-in tool File Transfer Wizard. Also you can mount backup to drive letter as virtual partitions. More info here:

bob roos Both programs use the same format! What a novel idea!! Good for you.

I am playing with the demo version and compared to Acronis it seems to take about 3x longer to do a backup. BUT it works to my NAS. It drives my 1Gb network at about 9%, but a straight file copy to the NAS drives it at about 15% or better. On Best Compression 1 (of 4) processors is running at 15-22% so I don't think it is a processor issue with the speed. Backing up my SSD to a "regular" drive was not appreciably faster than backing up to the NAS (1:03:28) vs about 25:00 for Acronis.

There are many things to like about this program. I wish the speed were one grin.

I followed the guide for restoring a single file, but was unable to do it. Apparently 64 bit windows does not have the MOUNT option on a right click of the archive? DiskView Volume Explorer does not show network drives so I could not see my archive from there. I tried "restore from archive" and it warned me that all files in the receiving location would be destroyed. So far I have not been able to see just one file on the archive.

If I buy it do I have to download again? I didn't see a way to enter an unlock key?

Brad Hi Pavel,

Follow-up question to my early post above. Given the fact that the you have indicated the potential for offering the Pro version at some future point depending on the interest, might you consider allowing those select individuals who purchase the Suite here and now today on this very promotion to be given upgrade credit towards a Pro version offering. Realizing that this is dependent on the interest shown for such an offering, which may or may not happen.

Here is my reasoning, I have no problem purchasing the Suite today who knows I might find the features built into this version is totally adequate for my needs. However if the Pro version is offered 6 months down the line, and I'm thinking wow I really wanted that capability but now I am paying again which leaves me with two products, I would rather not be holding two licenses of the same product if I can somehow avoid it.

As an aside to Roger,

Roger I did take note the +1 :), I feel this is a legitimate follow-up question. My rationale is this, if the vendor can provide a measure of cover for those who really feel the expanded capabilities of the Pro are necessary for them, and I think many of us are power users, then at the very least we would have no obstacle or reservation about making a purchasing decision today for this Suite.

At least for me it would be an automatic purchase knowing that if at some future point here on BitsDuJour ( you know within reason, not two years down the line, when the product version is changed) that I will be able to take my $25 investment from the Suite purchased here and apply it towards what I assume would be a 50% promotion for the Pro version here on BitsDuJour. It seems to me this is a way for many of us to get a good look at the product, and give it "a good run around the block", and then evaluate whether or not it really has everything I need.

It really does looks like a wonderful product, I just do not know that much with the companies offerings, as well as support.

So that is my proposal, given the bevy of questions surrounding the Suite vs. Pro products.

Thanks for at least considering my proposal,

Brad

Roger Thomasson Folks, we do not under any circumstances provide information regarding future promotions. Each promotion is a self-contained event and should be treated as such by y'alls.

If you want the Suite, buy the Suite. If you want the Pro version feel free to pay full retail price or gamble on the chance that we'll offer it at some point in the medium to long-term future.

Regardless, that decision is between BitsDuJour and Paragon. You'll know about it when it hits the schedule, not before.

Just like every other title we've ever offered on BDJ :-)

If we started letting you know about promotions months in advance we would lose 90% of our vendor partners overnight. Which would be bad for everyone!

VLM I read the comparison page, and I am curious about these items:

1. What is "synthetic backup"?

2. What is "cyclic backup"?

3. Why would one ever wish to convert dynamic to basic? I thought we would all wish to go the other way. ???

TIA to whoever responds!
Aug 11 2011 at 10:40am Copy Link

Brad @Roger

I am puzzled by your strong response? I was not trying to find out any “information regarding future promotions”. It was the vendor who opened the door about the potential for a future offering of the Pro product. Pavel’s quote; “In the case of great interest to PRO version we will consider a opportunity to offer this one on www.bitsdujour.com as well." My statement regarding any future offering was “which may or may not happen”. it's totally within your purview.

For me I was simply looking for the ability to change the “Cluster Size” and the capability of “Synthetic Backups”, which I know are not included in the Suite, so I asked about the Pro version.

Just last week many of us opted to move to the Professional version of the Hard Disk Sentinel product from the standard offering due to queries by other members (not myself) made directly to the developer/vendor. We sent an email to the developer and he was very gracious about it providing an upgrade for an additional fee. So this is I was coming from fresh off this experience.

I had no idea my question about the Paragon product was off base. It seemed like a rational follow-up question, given others interest in the Pro product. But all of us are coming from a different perspective; maybe these forum questions and requests for alternate deals are generating problems for you which we have no clue of. If that is the case and your response is drawing a line in the sand, then point taken.

A suggestion if I might be so bold, if you do not want your members to discuss any matters related to the flexibility of vendor/developers to substitute with either an upgrade or downgrade to the existing product offered, then I might suggest putting this in the rules for this site.

I truly meant no offense. In the end it is your show, at least for me I now know a boundary not to cross.

Regards, Brad

Paragon Software Hi,

We apologize, and to avoid further problems with the support we want to warn that the majority of time in which we can support you – 1:00 – 9:00 AM (EDT, New York Time).

By agreement of the BTD.com, we cannot announce a future proposal, therefore we cannot say when the Pro version will be offered and whether it will be offered at all ever. But we can say with confidence that all our customers who have signed up for the newsletter to receive exciting offers.

Now on the technical issues –

Synthetic Backup - You can change any property (merge a given differential image with its full image, split/un-split, compress/de-compress, etc.) of an existing archive without carrying out a physical backup operation
Cyclic Backup - Establish an automatic data backup that is fully compliant with the Set-and-Forget Backup Policy

If you need to create exact image of your hard disk you can make an exact clone of a hard disk on another hard disk using wizard “Copy Hard Disk” in HDM Suite.

Licensing - This license allows to use the product on one computer only.

VLM LIto, thanks you've obviously looked more deeply than I did. Still, it seems to me that the Pro version is the one to get.

Chris Roy Jackson - 1 at the moment, maybe a couple more in the future. I see that the licensing policy is per computer, which is fine by us. Thanks for asking!

David H (Seattle) An earlier version of this suite (8?) held my hand through a disk upgrade (image, partition new disk, restore), and helped with other minor tasks.

THIS version (12 Pro) saved my bacon when my system blew up (most parts fried by a whacked-out power-supply). I had the main disk as a RAID mirror, and one disk bit it, but the other was OK. However, the system was 5 years old, and the same motherboard was no longer available, but I needed to be operational ASAP, not setting up and installing new apps. Paragon HDM 12 Pro has its P2P transfer wizard - I booted on the WinPE CD, ran the wizard, it examined the old system and the new hardware, asked for the new motherboard driver CD, and pulled the needed drivers off that CD and plugged them into the system (yes, installed them externally), and VOILA the old disk booted perfectly fine in the new system. That HDM 12 CD also made an image of the system disk before I ran the P2P wizard, in case something went awry, but all was well. Worth every penny! The non-Pro version has all the parts a home user would need, including the tools I mention. The bootable WinPE utility / recovery CD looks and runs exactly like the Windows app, so operations look identical no matter when & how you use them.

Mike Rodda I purchased this today but I get this error upon launching.

ProductShortName
Operation Failed
Could not load user interface from template

I've reported it to Paragon and I'll let you know how responsive they are and whether they manage to fix the problem for me.

Ernest Kennedy I purchased this suite of apps quite some time ago in a paragon email promotion. I have not had any cause to regret the purchase even though I havn't used it in anger so to speak as in using it to recover hard drives yet but just use it to set drives up as I have a bank of extra hard drives I use all the time for continuous backups etc. All in All it's worth every penny one spends on it. As I have, enjoy it and give yourself a pat on the back for being wise enough to grab it at this price. No I am not affiliated to paragon in any way, I'm just a satisfied customer.

Wiggle Hi, do we get lifetime updates? On "THE FINE PRINT" stated that "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for minor versions only. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted by 50%. It will be discounted only if you've purchased the last major version".

Gr3gw I have also been using this product for many years. The interface is a bit odd BUT it is reliable, and that's why I have stuck to it. Operations on partitions like growing, contracting and moving are potentially high risk but over a long period of time I have developed full confidence in Paragon Hard Disk Manager. I recommend this product to anyone needing partitioning software.
