What are people saying about Hard Disk Sentinel Standard Edition

Albert C. One of the best if not the best programs for HDD monitoring! Friendly activation system and great support too! ^_^

Genie au Travail In the policy :
... Online license activation is required without a hardware footprint...

But on the web site of the software :
Note: if the user must re-install the operating system, Hard Disk Sentinel can be re-installed and re-activated as many times as the user wants if the first installed hard disk is the same in all cases. If this (first) hard disk needs to be replaced, the number of legally allowed re-activations are decreased by one. Then for this (new) hard disk the user may re-install and re-activate as many times as he wants again. Hard Disk Sentinel can be connected to 5 (five) different primary hard disks (if you need to replace your first hard disk to a 6th one, please contact us to extend your license). The second, third or any further disks or other components have no effect about the registered status of the application. The user may freely add/remove/replace any 2nd or further hard disk.

The question about hardware footprint need to be clarified...

Janos Mathe Excuse me for the confusion.
Basically the policy should be read as:

"Online license activation is required, license grants the use on one computer at a time."

You can any time re-install, upgrade your computer, the license can be activated again (any number of times).

Alternatively you can move the license to an other computer (it is limited to 5 times by default but if further moves are required, the license is extended on request. This extenstion is FREE of course).

The license is lifetime: it never expires and all future version upgrades are also free.

Tazzie I use HDS and love it! I just swapped my main OS HDD drive for a SSD drive, and had no problems reinstalling and activating HDS ... it was seamless and smooth and running great as before. Picked up on the SSD along with my HDD data drive and external drive. This is one software that I consider worth the activation policy.

Janos Mathe Excuse me if the licensing makes troubles.

Just a tip which may help and makes the activation system more friendly and easier: Configuration - Update - Backup configuration option saves all current statistics, settings, licensing information to a single file.

Later, upon a reinstall (or if you prefer to move the software to an other computer) you can use Configuration - Update - Restore configuration to restore all details and this does not require activation again.
With other words, you may only need to activate the software only once, upon the very first install and then you can use it without to worry about the activation system at all.

Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Family license is more permissive, that license allows the use on more than one computers (up to 5) at the same time.

Lupke Brother Hi Janos,

HDS can verify disks in Raid array. What about disks in Raid 1 which are controlled by the Intel Rapid storage technology driver? I tried other software but they couldn't read it, not even my s.m.a.r.t. data for this Raid drives. I want to be sure before installing yet another harddisk monitor.

Janos Mathe M.Nazmi Özmilli, Gonzo: Yes, it is possible to upgrade from Standard to Pro any time for the difference between the retail prices: EUR 10 or USD 12. The easiest and fastest method is to use PayPal and transfer to infohdsentinel.com and the new Pro registration code will be delivered to your e-mail address.

If you prefer other payment method and/or upgrade immediately to Pro Family version, that will be also possible (just send an e-mail about with inquiry).

Excuse me for the delayed answer, I wanted to confirm with BDJ admin if I'm allowed to post this upgrade method here.

Janos Mathe Lupke Brother: Yes of course, RAID 1 controlled by the Intel Rapid Storage (on ICH7R or newer) is supported, all disks should be monitored just like standalone disks.
Please note that for some RAID controllers (like the Intel) you may require a driver update. The most common such recommended drivers are available on www.hdsentinel.com - Support - Driver Zone

You may download and install trial (unregistered) version to verify if all disk information are detected prior selecting this license. If not, please use Report menu - Send test report to developer option so I can check the details and may advise.

Under Support - Compatibility - Disk Controllers the currently supported RAID controllers (IDE/SATA/SAS) are listed.

Frank Stephens I bought the Pro version from a previous BDJ promotion. Great product, highly recommended. The Standard version should be fine for most people, you can check the comparison table. I don't leave it running because my external drives can flake out. I thought that might be a problem with the S.M.A.R.T. checking, but they flake out anyway. No one at Microsoft knows anything about computers. Even on Win7x64 an unresponsive external drive, even if it has absolutely nothing to do with what you're doing, can hang Windows indefinitely. I just have to unplug and replug drives to reset them.
Aug 3 2011 at 1:17am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Frank: Thanks for your kind words :-)

The generous problem with some external drives is well known: some of them have an internal power management function and they power down after some idle time.
Later, when you try to access the drive, it may not power up properly and a timeout happens. It can hang the device and/or the complete system and you need to restart the computer or disconnect/reconnect the device.

It is not really related to Hard Disk Sentinel (as you wrote, it happens even if the software is not active). Anyway, there is an option in the software which is designed especially for this issue: on Configuration - Disk Control you can find the "Do not allow spin down of disks" option. Please specify the disk numbers from the Hard Disk Drives page (or just a * ) there to prevent the activation of this power management function by periodically sending a command to the hard disk. The result should be no more issues with the external drive and the data should be available all times (no need to wait to spin up the external drive again).

Trucker Garfield "...can hang Windows indefinitely." - Frank:

- Do you have the lastest drivers for your hardware ?
- Have you build your computer from the ground ?

I don´t have that problem on any of my XP or Win7 computers at all !

Janos: Does the Hard Disk Sentinel Standard show S.M.A.R.T. info or is it only the PRO version ?
Aug 3 2011 at 2:58am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Trucker G: according the experiences, this issue affects only very small number of external hard disks (for example some older WD MyBook and Samsung Story Station models).

Most external hard disks have no such problems.

Frank: I forgot to write. Can you please use Report menu - Send test report to developer option when the external drives are connected? Just to check the detected information and the type of the bridge chip used in external enclosure and according that I may give further information/advice.
H.D.S. Hungary - Aug 3 2011 at 3:29am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Trucker G: Yes of course, the Standard edition also provides full S.M.A.R.T. information and supports exactly the same hardware devices (Disk/RAID controllers, HDDs/SSDs, USB/eSata devices, etc.) as the Professional one.

The major difference is that the Professional offers more disk testing functions and has automatic backup projects: execute specific tasks as scheduled and/or upon any issue found with the hard disk(s).

ellison I've used the standard version since 2009 ,and found this software (and the support) to be excellent. As well as the basic SMART features I like the fact that it shows you the hard drive temp in the system tray, and that you can set it to start with windows with a pre start time delay.I have mine set to 240 secs so as not to interfere with other start up items.Another nice touch is the "verify online" feature where you can compare your hard drives stats with other users of the same drive. All in all its a good piece of software and well worth the price shown here !! ( I paid £20.10 in vat) back in 09.
Aug 3 2011 at 3:55am Copy Link
0
Trucker Garfield Janos: Thanks for the info. Strange, I do have a older WD MyBook (250 GB) and still didn´t have any program... Anyways...
I wasn´t sure because I looked at the comparing page of the versions and it did say S.M.A.R.T., thanks.
Aug 3 2011 at 4:06am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Trucker G: maybe you can hear the spin down/spin up of the hard disk in the MyBook (?)
Usually they have less problems as they (3.5" drives) have external power supply, just it may be not comfortable to wait to spin up on all access.

Problems may happen more frequently with 2.5" drives, especially if the manufacturer ships them with single USB cables instead of double (Y-USB cable). Single USB connection may not provide enough power to spin up properly and the constant spin up retries can cause the "hang" issue and (more important) can damage the hard disk itself.
So excuse me, I wanted to write WD Passport instead of MyBook.

Anyway, Hard Disk Sentinel can help in such situations to make the drives and the complete system more stable and reliable.

Frank Stephens Janos Mathe, 4 external USB 2.0 drives have problems, all different manufacturers, most are 2TB, 2 external USB 3.0 drives don't have problems, different hardware. I tried setting Hard Disk Sentinel to keep the drives spinning, but so far I haven't been able to keep Hard Disk Sentinel from hanging forever at startup (and tough to kill). You're a responsive developer, I'll move this to email, I'm sure it's just some conflict with my drive controllers which you'll be able to fix.

Janos Mathe Frank: This sounds really interesting. I'm so curious to have further information as I'd check the situation and improve.
Do you have the latest Hard Disk Sentinel version (3.60) installed?
H.D.S. Hungary - Aug 3 2011 at 6:17am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Marco: Yes, the disks in the RAID array should be detected and their full status (temperature, health and full S.M.A.R.T. information) should be available.

On http://www.hdsentinel.com...ollers.php , the Silicon Image 3114 is listed in the "RAID controllers" section as it provides details about all SATA disks (standalone and configured as RAID arrays).

I recommend to download the trial version by the "Download" button to verify hardware compatibility. If some information is missing, please make sure to use the latest drivers for this controller.

Janos Mathe Marco: Thanks!
The problem is that most HDD-monitoring software can access only "simple" configurations with standalone internal disks.

Only very few (including Hard Disk Sentinel of course) offer hardware support for RAID controllers, external USB/eSATA disks, SSDs and other storage devices (docking stations, port multipliers, server-grade SAS drives + backplanes and so).

And even less software offer disk testing, statistics, alerts, reports from web browser - but these are also included in this single software, Hard Disk Sentinel.

S B I, too, was fortunately able to get a pro family pack from a previous BDJ promotion.

I cannot add much except to say that its user interface and data presentation are more generous, professional, and clearer than the several other products that I've tried (typically much more so).

I am very happy with the Hard Disk Sentinel.

James Kenney Could you clarify how to get the pro and/or the family editions at a discount?
Do we buy the regular version first and then send a paypal payment to you for the difference in base prices?
Do we need to contact you first?
Aug 3 2011 at 12:24pm Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe James: if you already have Hard Disk Sentinel Standard edition and prefer the upgrade, just transfer the difference between the retail price of this edition and the Pro (or Pro Family) by PayPal to infohdsentinel.com
The differences are: upgrade to Pro: USD 12, upgrade to Pro Family: USD 39.50

Yes, please also send an email with your name/address so I can check the license and then provide the new license key for the updated version. The best if you use the same e-mail address for the PayPal transaction as it helps to identify the license.

If you do not yet have the Standard edition, you may consider to get the Pro or Pro Family version directly at BDJ as it may be more economic (at least for the Family pack) by using these links:

Carl Lum This looks like a very useful program and I just purchased it. However there is one annoying glitch: I had downloaded the trial version to check it out. But when I went to enter my registration code, the program told me to download and install the Standard edition first, as the trial is for the Pro version. Now I have to uninstall and reinstall. How annoying!

A much more user friendly method would be to have one executable and then have the registration key unlock the appropriate features.
Aug 3 2011 at 1:22pm Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Carl: Thanks!

Excuse me for the issue. Basically, the Standard and Pro versions have different features and built differently (that's why they accept only the keys designed to the proper version).

The trial version on www.hdsentinel.com is basically an unregistered Pro version (which really accepts license keys to the Pro version).

I can make sure if you use the "Download" button on the top of this BDJ page, it downloads the correct version which should accept the license code, so there is no need to download and install a different package.
H.D.S. Hungary - Aug 3 2011 at 1:30pm Copy Link

Carl Lum Yes, I eventually went back to the "Download" button and got the proper version. My mistake was that I wandered off onto your website to look for more information and ended up grabbing the trial download from there.

Your program looks extremely comprehensive and appears to be an excellent value, especially for $11. One question: does your surface test take long to complete? I just bought a 2TB drive and I tried running the Windows "scan and detect bad sectors" and it ended up locking up the drive after running for several hours...
Aug 3 2011 at 1:46pm Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe A complete surface scan may take really long time, especially on a 2 TB hard disk (4-8 hours is normal).

However, during the test Hard Disk Sentinel monitors and shows the data transfer speed, temperature and all working parameters and it displays the progress on the surface map. It is possible to pause and resume the testing if required, so it is more sophisticated to diagnose the hard disk (compared to the Windows scandisk method).

Frank Stephens Janos Mathe, thanks for your help. All of my drives are high-capacity, which generally means more platters, more mass, longer spin-up. The USB 2.0 drives all spin down after idle timeout, the USB 3.0 drives are in docking stations which probably leave them spinning (I didn't set the individual drives to spin down). I don't like the power draw, but having Hard Disk Sentinel keep the drives spinning has resulted in reliable operation (one or more drives would have become unresponsive very quickly). Windows was probably blocking Hard Disk Sentinel (during I/O request) if a drive was already unresponsive.

Marco Pivetta Carl Lum: I made the same thing; downloaded from hdsentinel.com.

I agree with you. It´s just an annoying glitch. There should be an option do enter a registration code to the trial or the site should provide the proper trial version.

Here is our suggestion.

Frank Stephens Did I miss a setting? When I click on the status window, I get partition information for a couple of my drives but not for the others.
Aug 3 2011 at 6:54pm Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Frank: I suspect that the problem is caused by that (according the report you sent) some of the drives are not in perfect condition, even one is showing 0% health.

Yes, in general, when an error is detected with one or more such hard disks, the complete system may become unresponsible (seems to "hang") until the drive will start to operate normally again or until a (longer) timeout happens when the drive is automatically disconnected from the system.
Before that happens, all software trying to perform I/O on the affected device is blocked by the OS, exactly as you can see.

Karl M. Janos, thanks a lot.

I already used Hard Disk Sentinel and it's really a great program. Much much better than any other of it's kind – and I've tested a lot of them.

I'm going to grab this generous offer and tell friends of this offer.

I wonder if there is a update to the Pro version.

Greetings from Germany from a happy user who's wife is a absolutely nice Budapest girl.

I'm very happy to see such great products from lovely Hungary!

M M Also a happy user of this great product.
If you want to see the differences between Standard and Pro, look here: http://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php.
It was not obvious for me to find that on the "Store" page, I was looking under "Products", "Support", FAQ, then also tried the forum, but ... I am banned based on my IP. Trust me, I have never posted anything, now I cannot even read the posts or register. I use one of the largest ISP provider in my country and have their private IP, so what can I do ?!?!
I was looking also for the way to upgrade from my current Pro to Family, but that could also be found only in the Forum (I had to read very small print on Google search page).

Janos Mathe Thanks for your message!
Sorry for the troubles - the Products page displays "Visit the Hard Disk Sentinel store to compare the list of all features in different versions", but I agree, it may not be too noticeable. Sorry !!

Can you please send me your IP address to infohdsentinel.com ? Then I'll immediately remove the ban. Excuse me for that, due to the excessive amount of SPAM sent to the forum and coming from different providers, some control was required to prevent this. I suspect the largest ISP may have suspicious clients who perform these actions and that's why your address is also filtered. Excuse me again for that!

It is possible to upgrade your Pro to Pro Family version, please also drop me an e-mail about this and I can assist.

Oliver Solano The Policy reads:

"Each license allows installation on 1 computer, but Hard Disk Sentinel Standard Edition may not be used at exactly the same time on each of them."

That doesnt make sense at all. 1 licence/computer is 1 licence/computer, so the last part of the sentence is redundant.
Jun 4 2012 at 3:08am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe I completely agree, excuse me for the confusion (I wonder why the last part apeended to the Policy by BDJ).

So the license can be used on 1 computer for any time without limitations (it never expires) and can be freely upgraded to future versions.

The license can be moved to different computer (for example on upgrading the computer).

Steven Avery Hi,

Those of us who have your fine Professional product, can you remind us of the license situation. Overall, I have 5 PCs (some lightly used, this includes work and laptop), so theoretically I probably could use standard where I do not have Prof. At the moment I think I am only installed on 1 and want to expand properly.

If I already have Prof installed on my main PC, need I find a non-HDS PC tonight for the install and registration ? I do not want to create any difficulties on my main puter, but I almost would rather just download and email without install tonight (zzz) but that might not be functional ?

Anyway, thanks for a fine software.

I completely understand and agree.
I can confirm that you do not need to install and activate this license tonight, during the promotion.

Janos Mathe @Craig, @Michael:
Yes, I can confirm that the proper way to register and activate the software is:

Please click on "Help" and select "Enter registration key" in Hard Disk Sentinel after it is installed and running. (available directly from http://www.hdsentinel.com..._setup.zip )

Please enter your name (or nickname) as username, the registration code you received (15-digit number) and click on the "Register and activate on-line" button.
Then the software should be registered and activated and can be used without limitations.

If you experience problems (maybe due to traffic), please try some minutes later - or you may try the "Registration and activation by e-mail" method: then you will need to send a small keyfile together with the received 15-digit registration code and I'll send back the activated keyfile.

Janos Mathe Hi James,

Please check the "Store" page at www.hdsentinel.com (directly at: www.hdsentinel.com/store.php ). Also you can reach this comparison on the "Products" page ( "Visit the Hard Disk Sentinel store to compare the list of all features in different versions" )

This shows the differences between the Standard and Pro versions.
In general, the major differences are
- more advanced disk testing (for example the "Reinitiliase disk surface test" you mentioned, and "refresh data area" and one pass "write+read (verify)" testing)
- integrated scheduled and automatic backup features
- option to use the Portable version
but you can see the list for more, minor differences.

The easiest way for upgrade is by Paypal for the difference between the two (standard - Pro) versions, just need to transfer $12 to infohdsentinel.com by Paypal. Please also send an e-mail with your current license code and then you'll receive the Pro license code in e-mail.

If you prefer other method to upgrade (eg. by credit card) or to upgrade to Pro Family version, please just send an e-mail to infohdsentinel.com

By running the "Destructive/Write Surface Test" multiple times with different patterns (you can select overwrite pattern after selecting Disk - Surface test window at Configuration panel, just before starting the test) and then running read test, you may have very good result, near as with the Reinitiliase Disk Surface - but the later is easier and more efficient to run.

BearPup I've been using Hard Disk Sentinel for over a year now, and I'm very pleased with the program. It gives an extra level of security and protection that no other software product does.

I have 5 different hard drives, some of which are older IDE drives and some newer SATA drives; either way the program monitors the drives in real time, and gives alerts when things get too hot for safety.

I'm generally left with a feeling of confidence that if something is about to go 'wrong', the Sentinel will alert me in time to safely shut down the system while I can still rescue the data from the drives.

Regards,
BearPup

Janos Mathe Thanks BearPup & Paul for your kind words :-)

Norman: please click on the Store button at www.hdsentinel.com (or open directly http://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php )
That describes the differences between the different versions.
As you can see there: "Each computer (PC, Desktop, Server or Notebook) requires a license."
It means that Hard Disk Sentinel (standard or Pro) can be used for unlimited time, to diagnose unlimited number of hard disks / SSDs and can be updated for all future versions - but only on one computer.
Hard Disk Sentinel Professional FAMILY license allows using on up to 5 computers.

I sent an error report to the Hard Disk Sentinel company on a Sunday and am still astonished that I received a detailed, hand written, well thought out, helpful email on the same Sunday. As a result of the helpful information in that reply, I have a good idea of what to try to make one of my other hard drives bootable. No other company I've found provides such great support.

Peter C1 Dear Janos Mathe, Does HDS perform its Monitoring functions equally well, no matter the type of Hard Disk used? for example: I.D.E., S.C.S.i., or, S.A.T.A. I/II.III, or, if the drives are in a RAiD array?

My Reason for asking is because my Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook with a not-so-old 2.5" I.D.E. 100GB 7200RPM Hitachi and the HEALTH just keeps ebbing away, whereas by comparison, the external WD MyBook Essential 1GB SATA II that I plug into the Dell keeps a very consistent HEALTH of 100% after 2.3 years.

For example here is the log of HDS monitoring of the said Dell Inspiron 9300 with 100GB Hitachi drive, details:

21/10/2012 04:54:16,S.M.A.R.T. 196 (Reallocation Event Count): 0 - 1 : Attribute changed
04/01/2013 08:23:44,S.M.A.R.T. 196 (Reallocation Event Count): 1 - 2 : Attribute changed
11/02/2013 02:37:16,S.M.A.R.T. 196 (Reallocation Event Count): 2 - 4 : Attribute changed
04/03/2013 05:40:31,S.M.A.R.T. 196 (Reallocation Event Count): 4 - 5 : Attribute changed
17/06/2013 02:35:47,S.M.A.R.T. 197 (Current Pending Sector Count): 0 - 1 : Attribute changed
28/06/2013 03:40:51,S.M.A.R.T. 197 (Current Pending Sector Count): 1 - 2 : Attribute changed
29/06/2013 15:46:25,S.M.A.R.T. 197 (Current Pending Sector Count): 2 - 3 : Attribute changed
12/08/2013 02:44:14,S.M.A.R.T. 197 (Current Pending Sector Count): 3 - 4 : Attribute changed
22/08/2013 18:00:31,S.M.A.R.T. 197 (Current Pending Sector Count): 4 - 5 : Attribute changed
12/09/2013 09:24:12,S.M.A.R.T. 197 (Current Pending Sector Count): 5 - 6 : Attribute changed

I.D.E. Hitachi - Health as of the LAST EVENT NOTiCE is now 61%, and I.D.E. Drive is 500 Days Old and Health was (obviously?) 100% when the Drive was installed and according to HDS, the I.D.E. Hitachi Drive may only last another (approx) 472 Days (Yikes, not even 3 Years!)

Whereas the WDC MyBook Essential 3.5inch Drive is already 865 Days OLD and estimated Life is More than another 960 Days and although I hate the product (and don't trust WDC hard drives in general), HDS says the HEALTH is Perfect!!!

Q1. Are I.D.E. drives simply not as good especially 2.5inch examples
Q2. Does HDS/HDSP work equally as well (reliably) with I.D.E. drives as it does with the newer technology SATA I & Sata II drives?

HAViNG Said all of the above I still think that HDS/HDSP should be the one(1) ESSENTiAL program supplied with ALL new Notebooks and Desktops as it is a brilliant program (and I speak from experience as I have had my share or hand full of Drive Failures over the years).

Many thanks, Peter

Yes, I can confirm that Hard Disk Sentinel supports both NTFS, FAT, FAT32 logical drives.
Moreover, as Hard Disk Sentinel works with the physical hard disks, it can read the status and perform testing on hard disks with no partitions at all or partitions which are not readable for Windows (eg. Linux or other special partitions).

Janos Mathe Peter: Yes, I can confirm that all hard disks supported, including IDE / ATA, Serial ATA, SCSI, SAS, USB and so.
This is true for standalone disks and if they configured as RAID (if the RAID controller allows accessing complete status).
Thanks for the 10000's of reports analysed about all different hard disks (especially about failed drives, investigated by data recovery companies) yes, Hard Disk Sentinel can reliable detect and report possible issues with the drives, regardless of their connection.

Things changed lots since the release of older IDE drives. Technology improved lots, there are more precise parts used in the drives which lead to more efficient drives (in both performance, capacity, acoustics, power usage, reliability and so). For example, older notebook drives may not yet have g-sensors and other methods used in recent drives to protect the hard disk components and thus the stored data.

Older drives can also perform well - but only if proper operating environment used. As I see from your message, your drive reported weak sectors. These usually related to other factors, in most cases (even if it sounds surprising) may be independent from the hard disk. Please check http://www.hdsentinel.com...ectors.php for more information about such weak sectors.

Hitachi drives (in general) especially famous that they work well - but only if the drive really has proper cooling, proper power supply, proper cables/connections. An older system (in general) may not be able to provide these for the drive to operate.

Richard Holler I keep hearing folks talking about a "Family" license, but on the store page at http://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php I only find Trial, Standard, Professional, and Enterprise versions listed. Is there another version that isn't shown? And if so, what's the cost?

Mar 24 2014 at 3:57am Copy Link

Janos Mathe Generally, the "Store" page ( http://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php ) shows the differences between the different versions (Trial / Standard / Professional).

The Standard version offers alerts on hard disk problems, for example e-mail / sound alert on predicted hard disk failure, overheat, decreasing health and so.
The Standard version also has some basic disk tests, for example Disk - Short self test, Extended self test, Read and Write type surface test.

It can be used for unlimited time after installation: the license never expires and all updates for future versions are free.

Hard Disk Sentinel Professional offers all of the above - and also more features:

- Complete backup solution and Panic Backup - configurable backup projects to be executed on a scheduled basis and/or upon different conditions, for example on new problems with hard disks

- Automatic hard disk testing: schedule hard disk tests as backup project to be executed regularly on specified (or even all) installed hard disks

- Advanced disk testing functions to reveal and fix problems with hard disks and SSDs. These include Disk menu - Refresh data area and Disk menu - Reinitialise Disk Surface - today's best method to fix hard disk problems (a simpler function may be incorrectly called as low level format in other software)

- Industry and goverment standard data destruction function: the Reinitialise Disk Surface function prevents data recovery even by special data recovery companies. Useful before replacing / selling hard disks

- Portable version: Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Portable version useful to diagnose hard disk(s) without installation, just by connecting a pendrive with this version

- Professional Family license: this package can be used on up to 5 computers (or one or more licenses can be used with the above mentioned Portable version)

- More frequent updates: un-official (beta) versions are frequently available in "Professional" edition on both www.hdsentinel.com and our www.facebook.com/HDSentinel page

- New features and functions available in Professional version only

Note that if you have the Standard version, you can upgrade to Professional later if you prefer, just send an e-mail to infohdsentinel.com with your license.

Janos Mathe @Mebrey Treck: I can confirm that Hard Disk Sentinel does not require Java.
Also it does not require .net, Visual C++ runtime or any other kind of 3rd party add-ons, extensions, runtime libraries or anything else.

Hard Disk Sentinel runs without these, so it's ideal on any Windows system, even in special cases, for example if there is no other software installed (many users install Hard Disk Sentinel immediately on a fresh system, before any other software to verify things) or for exampe in "safe mode" when third party libraries (and software rely on them) does not work.

For SSD drives, Hard Disk Sentinel (both the standard and Pro) checks SSD specific functions and features, for example the ACTIVE state of TRIM feature.
(this is different than ENABLED status reported by fsutil, which can cause many confusion. Please check http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#trim for details).

Also Hard Disk Sentinel Professional version has some special disk testing, for example the Disk - Surface test - Read+write+read test (refresh data area) which may make flash based devices (SSDs, but also memory cards, like CF/SD/SDHC/SDXC cards, USB pendrives) more usable.
H.D.S. Hungary - Mar 25 2014 at 1:11pm Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe @Chris Dino: Generally, hybrid drives provide information about themself as hard disks: they usually offer hard disk specific status information (bad sectors, transfer rate errors, spin up problems, temperature, etc...)
Usually they have no SSD-specific attributes, for example wear-level of the memory cells and so.

Constantly working about detection of more specific information (via special ways) so it's possible that future versions can provide even more details - if it's somehow possible to detect them. This may require the manufacter to improve the functionality and provide more details - so we try to ask manufacturers about this area.

If you prefer, you may use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option: these reports always help to check the possibilities for the currently used disk models.

Thanks for the suggestion about the icon! Currently it is used to maintain compatibility for older systems, as it's important to allow the software to run on older PCs, even with Win98/NT4/2000/XP systems, where a different format may cause problems. But it may be changed/improved later.

Janos Mathe @Norm Sussman: Thanks for your message.
I'm sorry for the troubles - but I can confirm what you wrote are not really bugs/problems.

I suspect that after entering your name and registration code, you may forgot to click on the "Registration and activation on-line" button.
Simply clicking OK is not enough - if you click that, it simply closes the configuration window, without proceeding the registration and activation, so the software will remain un-registered.

To summarize: to use the latest possible licensed version, download the Hard Disk Sentinel standard 4.50 version from the Download page ( http://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php ) or directly from http://www.harddisksentin..._setup.zip

After installation, to register and activate your product, please click on "Help" and select "Enter registration key"
in Hard Disk Sentinel.

Please enter your name (or nickname) as username, the license
code you received (the 15 digit number) and click on the "Register and activate on-line" button.

Then the software should be registered and activated and can be
used without limitations. Make sure that the software need to access the activation server during the activation, so your firewall should not block it.

Due to traffic, it is possible that you may need 2-3 retries in order to work - or you may use the "Registration and activation by e-mail" and send both your license code and the unregistered HDSentinel.hds file to info@hdsentinel.com from the folder where the software installed which I can activate and send back.

Janos Mathe @Norm: about the other issue with the low health + chkdsk: excuse me for the confusion.

The "bad sectors" reported in the text description are no longer used by the hard disk: they are already reallocated.
So the spare area is used for all reads and writes targeting those bad sectors.
This means that disk surface tests (even the tests in Hard Disk Sentinel) does not access those sectors, but tests the remaining data area and the spare area.

This is good, as this way you can be sure that the original (bad) area does not
contain important data and can't risk data loss.

This is why the detected and reported bad sectors can NEVER cause problems, regardless of their position because that problematic area is never used any more.

This is why it is acceptable to have some bad sectors - if the status of the hard disk is safe - and complete, intensive tests (for example Disk - Surface test - Read test in Hard Disk Sentinel) finds no problem.

Chkdsk never finds or repairs problems with the hard disk, but "repairs"
problem only with the logical volume / partition. Even if sounds surprising, this
may be independent form the actual hard disk status.

By using the surface tests in Hard Disk Sentinel, you can verify if the currently
used data area is error-free, there are no further errors reported (no weak, damaged sectors, no further problems).

For more information about these "bad sectors", please click on the "?" next to the text description (the text area describing the issues) and check
http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#health

I'd suggest to use the tests in Hard Disk Sentinel to verify the current disk surface, verify that it's error free (no damaged sectors).
And if it's correct, you can acknowledge the reported problems (as they're already fixed), causing that the errors will be removed from the text description and the health of the drive improves (even to 100%).
Then Hard Disk Sentinel will only report any problems occur in the future (if there will be).

For more information about the tests should be used to perform complete verification of the hard disk, to reveal and fix possible problems, please check:
http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests

and information about how to clear the errors, eliminate the displayed problems
after verified that the current status is really stable and the disk surface can be used without problems:
http://www.hdsentinel.com..._drive.php

For a very common situation, showing that how chkdsk can't be used to diagnose and especially to repair the hard disk problems, I'd suggest to check Support - Knowledge Base - Hard Disk Cases - Weak Sectors ( http://www.hdsentinel.com...ectors.php ).
This shows that when chkdsk "repairs" a problem it's still there and can cause data corruption / data loss. But after the weak sector really repaired by Hard Disk Sentinel, chkdsk does not find problems - as the status is fixed, stabilized by Hard Disk Sentinel.

Constantin Florea @Urban - Here are our suggestions:
- try another browser like IE, Chrome, Firefox or Opera
- run Firefox in Safe Mode.
- temporarily disable your antivirus, anti-malware, ad-blocker, pop-up blocker software you have installed
- temporarily disable all browser add-ons/extensions
- if you want to use the Facebook flow, you could skip the purchase pop-up and browse directly to the Facebook application:

Janos Mathe @Richard: excuse me for the troubles. Due the high amount of traffic, it is possible that the activation server may be a bit overloaded and not respond first, so I'd suggest try some attempts - or try a bit later.

Alternatively, you may click on the "Registration and activation by e-mail" and send the created HDSentinel.HDS file from the folder where the software installed to info@hdsentinel.com (together with the 15 digit registration code). Then I can activate manually and send back the activated keyfile.

Norm Sussman Hi Janos,

I have run the HD Sentinel program several times since yesterday. Each time I get the same result . It appears to me that the program finds the same problem each time it runs, but never fixes it.
Additionally, I get the BSOD shortly after closing the program. That happens each and every time I run the program. Previously, I hadn't had a BSOD since installing WIndows 8.1 (the same day it was released).
Now, I must uninstall Hard Disk Sentinel from my computer. What I need to know from you is will the green checks and red crosses disappear from the drives noted in "This PC" when the program is uninstalled, or must I do a special procedure to eliminate them? Also, if the program has actually moved the 184 "bad sectors" to a spare area, what procedure must I do to move them back to their original positions?

I ran the built-in Windows 8.1 Check of Drive (c:) after running Hard Disk Sentinel. It found and fixed problems on the drive. I had run that program before installing Hard Disk Sentinel, and it found the disk was healthy. So, whatever the cause, Hard Disk Sentinel doesn't appear to be compatible with my system. Will the uninstaller reverse everything Hard Disk Sentinel has done, and totally uninstall it?

Janos Mathe Hi Norm,

I'm so sorry for the troubles, but I'm afraid what you see is completely normal due to the lower health of your hard disk

As I tried to explain previously, when the hard disk finds "bad sectors", it replaces them with sectors from the spare area and then re-directs all reads/writes to this spare area (instead of using the original bad area).
This is completely normal and expected, generally work independently from any operating system or software active on the computer.

Important: not Hard Disk Sentinel caused these of course.
The tests in Hard Disk Sentinel may be used to reveal and fix possible problems (for example such bad sectors) but if they never started, I can confirm that these sectors are completely independent from this (and generaly any other) software.

The bad sectors detected and displayed by Hard Disk Sentinel may found and processed long time ago, even long before you installed Hard Disk Sentinel.
Hard Disk Sentinel just reads and displays this status information.

There is no need to "fix" or "repair" them - as they are already fixed.
But it's very important to confirm:
- is your hard disk stable?
- are there any other possible new problems, which can cause system instability, random errors/BSODs, data corruption and/or even data loss or (in the best case) simply performance degradations?

Because if the health is not too high, we can expect any of the above. Lower had disk health means higher risk of the above mentioned problems

This is why the proper test methods required to verify if the hard disk status is really stable, confirm if the hard disk (in general) works as should - or if there are any further issues, which can cause problems - exactly some (like the BSOD) you experienced.

As I tried to explain, chkdsk (or Windows internal disk test) is not really good way for this. These tests only scans the current partition, but does not care (for example) the current operation temperature, the possible slowness of sectors and general performance of the drive during the test, the retry count, the change of the hard disk status during the test - which can be all signs of possible problems.

This is why I recommended to use the tests in Hard Disk Sentinel ( http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests shows the most important ones in such situation) as there are really lots to verify if the hard disk is really working correctly, verify if it really found all problems and now its status is stable - or to reveal (and fix) any possible errors.

And if with these tests we confirmed that there are no oter problems, the disk is really usable, then you can manually clear the error counters: acknowledge the problems and eliminate the displayed errors - as you confirmed that the status is good and the hard disk can be used. Then with this action the reported errors will be removed and the health increases back (even to 100%) and Hard Disk Sentinel will only report any new (even minor) problems found in the future.
This is described on the page I previously suggested:
http://www.hdsentinel.com..._drive.php

This is not done automatically - exactly to avoid it doing with a single click, without confirming the hard disk status previously and without understanding the risks of using a such hard disk (even for secondary storage).

When you close Hard Disk Sentinel by File - Exit, I can confirm it does not stay in memory, does not work "hidden", does not perform any kind background disk accessing - so can't cause any problems.
If you experience BSOD then, I can make sure it is related to something else, probably to your hard disk, which is far from perfect.

I can confirm that (even and especially without Hard Disk Sentinel) you'd expect this if the hard disk has problems, just now Hard Disk Sentinel showed the possible cause.

If chkdsk found some problems, then it "fixed" on the logical drive (partition) only. But if the real hard disk problems are not properly fixed, then more and more such issues (BSOD, logical drive corruption, corruptied or lost files, etc.) will likely occur later. So while chkdsk is good to fix file system/logical drive related problems - it is not a good choice for fixing hard disk problems.
This is explained at http://www.hdsentinel.com...ectors.php

I can 100% confirm that Hard Disk Sentinel is fully compaible with your system and detected, displayed everything as should - warned you about possible hard disk failures.

Of course, if you uninstall it, then I can confirm it will be removed from the system. As you did not start the tests in Hard Disk Sentinel to reveal and fix other kind of problems, I can make sure it did not do anything (except reporting the problems to you) - so there's nothing to be undone.

Chris Roy Jackson @Janos
I have been using HD Sentinel for over 2 years. I have the Family License for all of our computers and have been VERY satisfied with the information it provides AND with Janos' responsiveness the few times I needed any help with anything!l

My disk Health shows (for some time now) on my Windows 7 64-bit Laptop as 93% and the following Message is in the "Test Box" below the Health rating:
There are 11 weak sectors found on the disk surface. They may be remapped any time in the later use of the disk.

Should I take any action and if so, WHAT action?

Also, can you tell me which Folder Holds the "Log Files" for the Windows ChkDsk (runs) in a Windows 7 64-bit System ?

WOW!!! The Post above (by: Janos ):
" Janos Mathe @Norm: about the other issue with the low health + chkdsk: excuse me for the confusion."
provides a WEALTH of GREAT information about potential problems!

I think I found the answer to my first question already.
I am now running an "Extended Self-Test", though it is possible that the "Weak Sectors" may have been caused by a "CRASH", or by my defective Motherboard which is getting replaced within the next week!

ALSO, Janos Thanks for the info regarding the fact that ChkDsk does NOT remap the Hard Disk, only the "Logical Drive"... I Did NOT know that VERY useful information !!!

Al Specifically what functionality is provided in the professional version that would apply to SSD disks (those that are completely solid state, not hybrids and thus that have no moving parts)? Will the program do me any good with such a drive?
Mar 27 2014 at 2:27pm Copy Link

Janos Mathe @M. Trecksis: (this question already answered two days ago here):

Hard Disk Sentinel (in addition to detection of health, possible problems, reporting wearout) also checks SSD-specific values and information which may be important, for example the total amount of writes (if a such counter is included in the SSD).

BearPup Want to put my two cents in on this program. I've used HDS for a couple of years now, and twice it has posted warnings - both temperature related. With the advanced warning I've been able to safely shut down the system before any damage was done.

That has saved me both dollars and time - I pulled the bad drive (re- manufactured) and was able to move forward without any loss of data and software. Without this software I'd of lost both data and software. I so appreciate this program, that I upgraded my program from Standard to Pro for even better protection.

This program is definitely worth the price, especially given today's offering. Lastly, the developer is very interested in what the software flags, and has helped me troubleshoot the bad drive. All very helpful and appreciated.

Janos Mathe In general, the Store page shows the difference between the different versions:
http://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php

In some points, the major benefit of Hard Disk Sentinel Professional version is the advanced functionality which helps in both diagnosing and fixing problems related to hard disks / SSDs. These functions include:

1) Complete backup solution and Panic Backup - configurable backup projects to be executed on a scheduled basis and/or upon different conditions. For example automatic backup when hard disk reports new problems or when hard disk health drops below specified thresholds and so

2) Automatic hard disk testing: schedule hard disk tests as backup project to be executed regularly on specified (or even all) installed hard disks

3) Advanced disk testing functions to reveal and fix problems with hard disks and SSDs. These include Disk menu -> Refresh data area (especially useful for pendrives/memory cards) and Disk menu -> Reinitialise Disk Surface - today's best method to fix hard disk problems by using special overwrite patterns and clearing the disk surface (a simpler function may be incorrectly called as low level format in other software)

4) Industry and goverment standard data destruction function: the above mentioned Reinitialise Disk Surface function prevents any kind of data recovery even performed by special data recovery companies. Useful before replacing / selling / releasing hard disks

5) Portable version: Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Portable version can be used to diagnose hard disk(s) without installation, just by connecting a pendrive with this version

6) Professional Family license: this package can be used on up to 5 computers (or one or more licenses can be used with the above mentioned Portable version)

7) More frequent updates: un-official (beta) versions are frequently available in "Professional" edition on both www.hdsentinel.com and our www.facebook.com/HDSentinel page

8) New features and functions available in Professional version only

Jan 7 2015 at 8:22am Copy Link

Janos Mathe Yes: if you configure it and then switch to run as an NT Service (at Configuration -> Integration -> Use as service) then yes: Hard Disk Sentinel starts as a service on system startup, runs independently from the current user, so works even if no user logged in.

It is best used with the Configuration -> Integration -> Enable WebStatus option, as then you can get hard disk status reports remotely, from any web browser on your mobile / tablet / PC.
Also best used with the Hard Disk Sentinel Tray (to get hard disk trays / notifications / information with the current user who may have limited rights). This is available in the Pro version only.

See the Help for more information about this solution, options.

Software Babe I purchased this back in 2012 and it is an excellent program! I keeps me informed of all my USB and internal hard drives, temps, health, etc. In fact, I put it back on my PC when I reformatted and it caught and overheated SEAGATE, which is the worst drive on the market. Seagates NEVER last more than a few years; at least not the newer ones (last 2 years). I stopped buying Seagate drivess some time ago. My WDs have lasted me over 5 years now, 2 of them 7 years old. I have over 9 USB drives attached to my system and by far, the WDs, Hitachi, and Samsung drives are superb drives. I wouldn't take a Seagate if you gave it to me for free. I would use a Seagate as A DOOR STOP.

I have the PRO family lifetime version of Hard Disk Sentinel and it is simply GREAT!

Gary Mugford I too would like to add my hearty endorsement. I got it originally here in an earlier offer. I then upgraded to the pro version in very short order. My only disappointment was that it didn't monitor NAS drives, which were the actual source of most of my failures over the last decade. So, in order for HDS to get a handle on my external storage, i switched from Cisco NAS's to running ProBox USB bank of drives. Two of them, actually. Suddenly (well, ALMOST suddenly, there was the whole backing up and reformatting issue), I had my drives accessible to HDS ... which immediately found one of the drives was nearing expiration. THANKS to HDS, I was able to retire the drive and avoid the angst and true suffering having it fail would have caused. HDS has handled everything non-NAS I've thrown at it and that's saying a LOT. It's early warning system is incredibly important when you have as much data spread across as many drives as I do. I have backups of backups and cloud backups of those backups. And that level of paranoia is required if you use your computer to generate a living.

I personally don't have much in the way of photos and home movies and the such. But I have an extended family member who entrusted all of her pictures and movies to a single drive. When it failed, we went to a professional recovery place who cited a minimum of $800 for recovery and managed to get back about three-quarters of what was on the drive ... for $1100, Which she happily paid. Rather, that I paid. Her depression over the though of losing those pictures of her grandmum was so palpable that I simply couldn't bear the thought she'd have to live with her loss permanently. So, she got back MOST of cherished memories, got back some more from friends she had shared with and now has a compute replete with HDS covering all the hardware, a backup in the clouds and thinks I'm the best uncle EVER! An expensive lesson for all.

This isn't miracle software, but it's software that will save you from potentially the biggest hurt one can imagine ... compounding the death of a loved one ALONG with discovering all the memories you've recorded onto a single drive has proven unrecoverable. Hearing her howl of pain, of doubly losing her grandmom, is/was one of those moment I wish never to repeat. BUY THIS SOFTWARE. It would be a bargain at ten times the price.

No, I can confirm that currently it is not possible to hide the temperature icon and show only when the high temperature reached. Thanks for the tip, this may be a good addition in a later version.

If you have multiple hard disks / SSDs and you prefer to minimize the number of tray icons (as by default each show the temperature of the corresponding device) I'd recommend to enable Configuration -> Hard disk drives -> Display only the highest temperature on tray option.
This way only one tray icon will be displayed with the highest temperature of all devices.

Janos Mathe @G M: I suspect one or more device(s) may respond very slowly and causing the software to wait for long time before it can access the status and start.
Some RAID controllers, external (especially multi-drive) enclosures work this way, and may even need minutes to respond and then the software will appear.

I'd recommend to check by temporary disconnecting any such device(s) before starting (if you have) just to check if there is any difference.

Also you may try the latest beta version from the Download page at www.hdsentinel.com which has generic improvements for many devices, so it is possible that it will start sooner.

John User I am finding this automatically being inserted into my Startup somehow. It delays my PC startup by several minutes each time. I checked to see if I could remove it from startup or at least delay its running, but then was unable to see it in the startup folder (or using WinPatrol).

I like the program, but is there some way to run this when I want and not every time I startup my computer?

Thank you.

s User This is an excellent program. However, I did notice one problem today: In Windows 10 Pro x64, with Hard Disk Sentinel running, I was unable to create a system restore point. It just hung. I had to close HDS, log out and back in to the user account in order to create a restore point.

Janos Mathe @John: Hard Disk Sentinel designed to start with Windows. However, I can confirm no, it does not affect startup of the system and/or other applications, exactly the opposite: if there may be other programs starting, Hard Disk Sentinel may delay itself automatically without affecting other applications.

If you see slower startup of the system, it may be related to one or more device(s) responding slower than expected. I'd suggest to use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option (the best is to use immediately after startup, when you see Hard Disk Sentinel opening).

Also I can confirm that of course Hard Disk Sentinel offers both options you wrote, it is absolutely not required (and not recommended) to modify the behaviour with 3rd party solutions, as it may result unpredictable results.

To delay startup: please use Configuration -> Preferences -> Pre-start delay (seconds) option. There you can specify (for example) 300 to delay startup with 5 minutes, allowing more than enough time for other applications and the whole system to settle down.

To completely disable the startup with Windows, please disable Configuration -> Preferences -> Load with Windows option.

Janos Mathe @s User: Thanks for your message.
Excuse me, but I suspect that the issue is not really related to Hard Disk Sentinel, but a device responding slowly (or does not respond at all). Then Hard Disk Sentinel would need to wait for the device - and then Windows could continue until that.

I'd suggest to use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option, as then it is possible to check what may caused the issue.

Personally experienced no similar (or other kind) of issues with Win 10x64.

Sputnik Very good software ! It leaves you the time to buy a new hard disk before the dying hard disk is definitively gone.

Be sure however to always have a complete backup of all your data on a backup disk.

Very good also for the fact that it warns you if the temperature of your hard disks gets too hot when you do a backup on an external hard disk inside an external case that does not have any exhaust fan.

I have a minor complaint however about Hard Disk Sentinel (Pro) : I always want to mask the temperature icon(s) in the notification zone but this icon keeps coming back at the view in this notification zone. It seems to me that this happens when I connect an external hard disk. I am using Windows 7 Pro 64bits.

It would be great to see this problem being fixed and that if we tell Windows to show or to hide this (these) temperature icon(s), that this (these) icon(s) keep their settings.

This happens no matter if we want to activate all the temperature icons or just keep only one icon showing the highest temperature.

Janos Mathe @Sputnik: Thanks for your message.
Excuse me, but I can confirm that there are no problems there (so nothing really to fix).
By default, Hard Disk Sentinel automatically assigns a tray icon for the hard disk / SSD to show its temperature when it's connected (or automatically updates the highest temperature icon if that option selected).

But if you do not prefer to have icons for particular device(s), then please open Configuration -> Hard disk drives page and by double click on any drive, you can disable tray icon for the particular device.

Personally I feel it's better to have the tray icon(s) (at least one) exactly to increase attention about possible high temperature.
But it is possible that an option (or a registry trick) will be added in a future version to completely prevent displaying any tray icons, as it may help if you prefer to run without showing tray icons in any case.

Janos Mathe @Kevin: sorry for the troubles. I suspect it is not really problem of BDJ, but related to Share-it, the company processing orders. I remember sometimes there were troubles with AUD and CAD conversion rates and I notified them about it. It seems they somehow did not have the most recent exchange rates.

Do you have Paypal account? I'd suggest to proceed the order and write a message also to info@hdsentinel.com and I'll directly transfer back the difference with Paypal to compensate.

Great product.

Janos Mathe Techtoysavvy: thanks for your message and thanks for selecting Hard Disk Sentinel Pro Family license.

Yes of course: both the Installed and Portable versions are (in terms of licensing) same they are both Professional version: they have 100% same functions, features.
The only difference is how the software deployed (installed OR started from a removable device, eg. pendrive) and started (automaticaly on startup OR manually).

Generally, if you have one license for Hard Disk Sentinel Professional,
you can decide if you prefer to use
- with the Installed version (to get real-time protection)
OR
- with the Portable version (to use by a pendrive, without installation to diagnose / fix issues)

And if you'll have the Pro Family license, it allows using on up to 5 computers / pendrives (in any combination), for example
- install on 4 computers and use the Portable on 1 pendrive
- install on 3 computers and use the Portable on 2 pendrives
and so.

Janos Mathe The DOS version can be used to quickly check status when Windows is not available, can't boot or so. Ideal to check systems before installing the OS (eg. when you select/buy used PCs with emptyHDD).

However, the DOS version has no tests at all, it can't perform any disk testing and has limited access to disk information, for example it can't access the status of USB drives and/or drives connected and managed by special RAID controllers (which are supported in the Windows version).

If you prefer to diagnose drives, perform tests, you may need to use Hard Disk Sentinel Pro Portable, started from a removable pendrive.

Stephen Brown I've been using Hard Disk Sentinel (HDS) for several years after purchasing a license. Was well worth the cash. Nice to see it being given away. I never upgraded my copy, so todays giveaway is very welcome.

Thank you to the developer for this excellent software. It has save me from a couple of disasters by giving me ample warnings about older HDD's being on their way out; so I always take heed of the warnings received via HDS and make sure everything on those disks is backed up before the HDD dies.

I lost a hard drive years ago (no warning signs and no SMART monitoring) with irrecoverable photos, so I know the pain. That will never happen again with Hard Disk Sentinel on all my systems. It lets me know when a drive is exhibiting signs it needs to be replaced, so I have time to get my data off it successfully. The program monitors all drives connected to the system, and auto-updates on a regular basis. It notifies me of overheat and other conditions, and I even have it setup to send me an email upon condition threshold marks. The tech support is fast and concise. I can't say enough about this super program!

YURY KUZMIN Hard Disk Sentinel (HDSentinel) is a program for monitoring the status of hard drives with support for HDD/SSD drives.
I use Hard Disk Sentinel for many years and do not see a viable alternative. This is not a complete list of programs what I've tried: CrystalDiskInfo, HD Tune, HDDScan, Ashampoo HDD Control, Hard Drive Inspector, etc., but they don't give complete information on the technical condition of the HDD in real time, which created a great risk of losing a hard drive, and with it all valuable data. And most importantly, Hard Disk Sentinel will give timely warning of the urgent need to save important data to external media and replace the HDD (SDD).

Kelly Hamblin I grabbed this deal the last time it was offered. I wanted to say how much I enjoy having Hard Disk Sentinel Standard running on my system. In 2016 I had two hard drive failures, one right after another, which caused me no end of trouble. Had I known what was happening, I could have saved myself a ton of research, work, and money. Now, whenever I boot up the system, Hard Disk Sentinel pops up and assures me all is well. Such a stress saver!

I think I would like to take advantage of the current discounted Pro license that is being offered today. I tried to find a place on the website that compares the two versions, but didn't find one - probably, I just missed it. Anyway, I did think that the main difference is that the Pro version can check any drive that is attached to the computer. Is that correct?

I would also like to mention a wish for a change in the license restrictions. A family license is too much for me. A single license I can get by with, but it protects only one of my three computers. In my house, only one person even knows how to turn on a computer. Licenses limited to only one computer, regardless of the number of users, are somewhat problematic. It's like those cell phone offers that are great for a family of four who spend most of their lives on their phones: such a good deal. But for a family of two with one person who only makes phone calls, there are no good deals available.

Also just an idea, maybe you can get a BitsDuJour account for your other family members, you know with their name and email. Then you should be able to get this deal (and future ones too) through their accounts and put it on their computers. I think your willingness to purchase the pro version and desire to purchase the family license speaks to how useful this has been for you, and I'm sure the developer appreciates it as well.

Janos Mathe @Kelly:

Generally the Store page ( https://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php ) describes the difference between the versions (trial, standard, Pro).

Generally on most systems, there is no difference in terms of status detection between the Standard and Professional versions: both can detect internal and external hard disk drives, SSDs, USB drives, RAID controllers.
The Pro version can also detect some additional special devices (like industrial SD memory cards, tape drives - as they used mostly in industrial / coprorate environments, but yes, we can say the Pro version can detect more devices than the standard).

The biggest difference is not only that the Pro version grants additional disk testing functions to detect and repair drives and also options to scheduled backup, scheduled disk testing, option to use in "portable" mode (without installation) but also the fact that the ordered Pro license grants lifetime use - with lifetime free updates too. So you can use and update to all new versions and this way you'll always get even more, without any additional fees.

Generally the Pro Family license is designed exactly to cover multiple systems, any number up to 5.
As you may see, its price is economic: less than if you'd just get two separate (single PC) licenses.
This way (for less than paying two licenses) you can cover your 3 computers and still have "room" to use on 2 additional PCs. The PCs no need to be in same home/office, so you can also offer to your family members / friends you trust and live far from you - or even create a the Pro Portable version to be used any time, anywhere to check a computer running Windows, without installation.
By the lifetime license + lifetime free update offer, I think it is fair solution :-)

RS I purchased HDS Pro several years ago from BDJ, and have found it to be the single best software utility purchase I have ever made at any price, much less the steal of a deal that this offer represents. While many users have rightfully pointed to the value of its various capabilities to accurately test, diagnose, and monitor hard disk reliability, what hasn't been mentioned is the support that the developer offers to each user regarding their hard disk issues. HDS enables the user to send a diagnostic report to Janos for his review by simply pressing a button, and he generally responds with an evaluation within 48 hours. I have found his feedback informative and his expertise impressive and invaluable, even as an IT educator myself. Surely, such analysis, tailored to your unique circumstances, by itself is worth far more than the retail cost of HDS; however, at half-price, this offer truly is a no-brainer.

As for the competition, there really isn't any to speak of--my extensive survey of hard disk utilities, prior to my purchase, found that other titles offer a fraction of the capability at even higher price points. And, none of them offer what is effectively a professional evaluation service at any price, much less as part of the software price. Accordingly, I highly recommend that you consider availing yourself of this deal. You will not regret it--I know I haven't. Indeed, last month HDS alerted me to a serious problem with one of my disks that I never would have caught in time to preserve my data. Immediately following a backup, the disk experienced a cascading failure, which quickly turned it into a brick. So how much would you pay to save your data? All it cost me was the price of HDS Pro. Can you think of a better value at the cost of $15 (not to mention free lifetime updates)? I sure can't.

Janos Mathe Hi Kelly,

Thanks for your message and excuse me for the possible confusion.

Generally I can confirm that in this current promotion, you could download Hard Disk Sentinel standard edition.

But if you selected to order Professional version, then you'd need to download it directly from our website, from the Downloads page:
https://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php

or directly from
https://www.harddisksenti..._setup.zip
(this link always point on the latest Hard Disk Sentinel Professional version).

Then, after installation, to register and activate your product, please click on "Help" and select "Enter registration key" in Hard Disk Sentinel Pro.

Please enter your name (or nickname) as username, the license code you received during the transaction (15 digit number) and click on the "Register and activate on-line" button.
Then the software should be registered and activated and can be
used without limitations. Make sure that the software need to access the activation server during the activation, so your firewall should not block it.

Excuse me again for the troubles and confusion about different versions.

Kelly Hamblin As I said. I downloaded it from the link provided in the email you sent me confirming my purchase.
http://www.bitsdujour.com..._content=5

I tried once to download directly from your site, but that required a discount code and I didn't have one. The setup.zip I installed from states clearly that is from: https://www.harddisksentinel.com. Of course, I opened the "Help" and copy-pasted the 15 digit # in the "Enter registration" box and clicked on the "Register and activate on-line" button. That is how I received the aforementioned message.

I downloaded - again - from the link in your answer above. Had to overwrite the .zip I'd already downloaded. Installed - again - and entered the reg key. Got the same messages.

Now I've installed the Pro version, destroying my nice little freebie and I have nothing.

If it helps any, my OS is Win7 64-bit. The app opens with a large popup that informs me this is a trial version and I have 30 days to try it before a purchase is necessary.

Janos Mathe Excuse me, but the link you sent:

opens the download link of Hard Disk Sentinel _standard_ edition, not the Professional.
You may notice "hdsentinel_setup.zip" which is the installer of the standard edition. This does not accept the license code.

This is why I suggested to please download
https://www.harddisksenti..._setup.zip
(please notice the file name: hdsentinel_pro_setup.zip)

This is the proper installer of Hard Disk Sentinel Professional.
If you install this, then Hard Disk Sentinel Professional should start. In the Help -> About box the word Professional should be displayed, confirming that this is the proper version - which should really accept the license code.

Excuse me again for the confusion.

I have used the standard product for a year and I like it and want to support your product so I went ahead and bought the family pro pack!!

I had to install a separate pro version since the license code sent by email wouldnt work on the previous registered standard version (it didnt act like an automatic update). Now that the pro version is registered and running, should I manually uninstall the registered standard version on this pc? or does that happen in the background since the pro was installed into the same folder in program files (x86)? I only see one program listed (the pro version) under uninstall programs in windows.

Janos Mathe Ak User: Thanks for your kindness and support !

Yes, if you order the Pro license, then a separate download of the Pro version is required: the promotional Hard Disk Sentinel standard does not accept the license code designed for the Pro version.

So then you need to download the Pro directly from:
https://www.harddisksenti..._setup.zip
(this link always point on the latest Pro version installer, so you can keep for reference).

I can confirm that no, generally uninstall of the previous (promotional) version is not required: if you install the Pro in the same folder, then it overwrites that and keeps all settings, statistics, logs etc.. and you can register and activate by the license code you received to use all functions.
Yes, as you notice only one software (always the latest installed) appears in the add/remove programs, confirming that there is no two instance installed.

Janos Mathe Patrocle Misu:

Please check the Store page: https://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php
for the difference between the standard and Pro versions.

The Pro Family can be used on up to 5 computers at any given time, the standard and Pro versions can be used on 1 (one) computer at any given time for unlimited time. Of course can be moved to new system when required.

The major benefit of Hard Disk Sentinel Professional version (over the standard) is the advanced functionality which helps in both diagnosing and fixing problems related to hard disks / SSDs.

6) Professional Family license: this package can be used on up to 5 computers
(or one or more licenses can be used with the above mentioned Portable version)

7) More frequent updates: un-official (beta) versions are frequently available in "Professional" edition on both www.hdsentinel.com and our www.facebook.com/HDSentinel page

8) New features and functions available in Professional version only

Linton User I really only have one main question regarding this free giveaway Standard Edition version of this program that I'm hoping someone can answer accurately for me.

This is the one feature more than any other that's most important and useful to me personally.

So my question is... Is this Standard Edition version ALSO able to do full scans of drives to check for bad sectors and then mark those specific sectors as bad if any are found, the same as the Professional Edition version of the program can do?

Really hoping someone can answer this clearly for me!

Janos Mathe If I'm correct, do you mean the Disk menu -> Surface test -> Disk Repair function, which designed to repair the disk drives, force reallocation of bad sectors and repairs weak sectors in non-destructive way, keeping stored data?

It is available in Hard Disk Sentinel Professional version only.

Please see the comparison between the versions:
https://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php

Surface check: available in Standard
Complete surface analysis, refresh, reinitialise, repair: available in Pro only.

The Standard version has some disk testing functions: the Disk menu -> Surface test -> Read test and a complete (destructive) Write test.

But for advanced functions, like the Disk Repair, the Reinitialise Disk Surface, the Refresh Data Area tests (and more advanced options/settings) you'd need the Hard Disk Sentinel Professional version.

@Janos Mathe

A support question: I have in the past purchased twice. One was a family pack PRO and then another time what I realized later was just a PRO.
Both were done here at BDJ. So far I have not activated / used that license.
Is there an option to turn that into a family pack upgrade? I would have to dig up the details of the purchase, but it was done here for certain.

In any case, I have to really say this is an excellent tool in my opinion.

Ben Eliason I just purchased, installed and activated one copy of Hard Disk Sentinel PROFESSIONAL v5.61 ($14.97) via the BitsDuJour promotion offered today. After reviewing the menus I'm not sure that I have the Professional version installed: I don't see menus for the advanced Pro version options listed in your product comparison chart. The Help/About screen of the copy I just installed shows "Hard Disk Sentinel" V5.61 (11463). No mention that this is a PRO version. I should mention that prior to installing the PRO (?) version today, I was running the standard version on my PC. Am I overlooking something? Please advise

Janos Mathe Hi Ben,

Thanks for selecting hard Disk Sentinel Pro version.
Yes, you have the Standard version installed. The top of the main window shows "PRO" in the title and also Help -> About box should show the word "PROFESSIONAL" if you'd have the Pro version installed.

Otherwise yes, the installed version is the standard one. So as you have license for the Professional version, you need to switch:

1) please uninstall the current Hard Disk Sentinel standard version
2) please download and install the latest Hard Disk Sentinel Professional version from www.hdsentinel.com or directly from https://www.harddisksenti..._setup.zip
3) after installation, to register and activate your product, please click on "Help" and select "Enter registration key" in Hard Disk Sentinel Pro.

Please enter your name (or nickname) as username (you can use any name, it does not matter) and the 15 digit license code you received and click on the "Register and activate on-line" button.
Then the software should be registered and activated and can be used without limitations on this computer.
Make sure that the software need to access the activation server during the activation, so your firewall should not block it.

cait User My biggest problem with this standard edition is it says one of my backup drives is about to fail. Checking the drive with other programs says the disk is fine and there is no problem. Disk check did not find the errors either. I don't know which is right and which is wrong. So...I have a problem, how do I fix it...all it tells me is to back up often, which I do on a regular basis. Who is right, is the disk drive about to fail, is it all messed up? I don't know what to believe. If there was a repair option, that would help, but I am not impressed with something that says a drive is broken and offers no other solution except to back up often which is standard procedure.

Janos Mathe cait User:

I can confirm that even the Standard version can offer lots of things, exactly to reveal, detect problems - or confirm if the disk drive is stable and can be used. Then the disk health can be restored too - only with Hard Disk Sentinel.

You may missed these pages at Support -> Frequently Asked Questions:

https://www.hdsentinel.co...difference
(Why other software displays different health? Which is correct?)

https://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests
(Hard disk health is low or recently changed or I just installed a new (used) hard disk. How can I perform a deep analysis?)

and

https://www.hdsentinel.co..._drive.php
(How to repair hard disk drive? How to eliminate displayed hard disk problems?)

Even the standard version gives solution: while it may not support all kind of disk testing/repairing/alerting functions (as some of them available in the Professional version only) you can still diagnose and improve the situation - and now for free.

Hard Disk Sentinel does exactly what it should: detect and reveal possible problems/degradations which may otherwise remain unnoticed until they can lead to data corruption / data loss.

Yes, other programs happily show failing drives as perfect: they do not care
about the real number of problems. Instead, they simply check if the error level threshold reached or not. But this does not give information about the real problems, possible changes/degradations - which may be even more important than the current status and health.

(if you are interested in further details, I'd recommend to check www.hdsentinel.com/smart page).

Not sure about the actual situation, but maybe your disk drive reports bad sectors or so.
These "bad sectors" detected by the hard disk S.M.A.R.T. and thus reported in the text description are no longer used by the hard disk: they are already reallocated.

It means that a spare area is used for all reads and writes targeting those bad sectors, instead of the original sectors. This spare area is originally reserved, so the bad sectors (and the health decrease in general) does not affect the usable capacity.

This means that disk surface tests (even the surface test in Hard Disk Sentinel) do not access those sectors, but tests the remaining data area and the spare area. This is good, as this way you can be sure that the original (bad) area does not contain important data and can't risk data loss.

This is why the detected and reported bad sectors can never cause problems,
regardless of their position because that problematic area is never used any more.
This is why manufacturers (really shame but work this way) "allow" more or less bad sectors and this is why other tools may never show / report them and can happily give "perfect" status for a disk (even if it may degrade).

But without detection and reporting the amount of such issues, users may never know that the hard disk is not perfect and/or if there are new problems
and degradation.

Please check the proper sections of the Frequently Asked Questions page:
http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#health
http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests

These describe the recommended steps to analyse the hard disks, reveal and fix any possible issues because the most important is to verify if the drive is
stable (there are no more, currently hidden problems) - or confirm that the drive
is now stable, all such issues already fixed by the hard disk.

Disk testing is good idea, but only with _proper_ methods, for example by using Disk menu -> Surface test -> Read test in Hard Disk Sentinel.
If the tests show no errors (which means the hard disk is now stable, all possible bad sectors are already re-allocated and fixed this way), it is possible to acknowledge the reported problems and remove them from the text description, to improve the health back to even 100% as then the software will only report future issues (if there will be).

This is described at http://www.hdsentinel.com..._drive.php
and I can send step-by-step instructions for this particular drive of course:
if you use Report -> Send test report to developer option any time (for example if you see new problems, decreased health), I can check the actual situation and advise.

cait User Thank you for your explanation. I did indeed read what you sent. I used 2 very well known and respected programs to check for the surface errors and faults that Hard disk sentinel showed. It showed no surface errors or anything else. I am replacing the drive to be sure, but it also showed faulty external drives that are new. I just am not comfortable with this much conflicting information. My back up drives are redundant as I cannot afford to lose data, and the backups have backups that are stored elsewhere and not connected to the main frame. In all honesty, I removed the program because it made me question it's veracity. I read about the SMART checking etc., but it still makes me question what to believe.

Janos Mathe cait User:

Thanks, I see.

If the disk surface seems perfect, it sounds good: you're lucky if the disk is working correctly when problems reported and the health is low. It may happen but usually this is not the case...

It means that in your case all possible problems already found and fixed by the disk drive, so it seems working "perfectly".
However, most disk drives produce newer and newer issues when the health is low and most hard disk drives can fail completely long before they may trigger problems/alert in other tools.
Having newer and newer issues can always risk possible data corruption/data loss - and lower health means increased chances for that.

It may sounds surprising but even new hard disk drives may be not perfect. This is why I always recommend to test new hard disk drives carefully before using it to store data, as described at
https://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests
(Hard disk health is low or recently changed or I just installed a new (used) hard disk. How can I perform a deep analysis?)
exactly to reveal possible issues and stabilize the problems before they may affect the actual, real stored data.

I'm so glad that Hard Disk Sentinel helped: at least increased the attention about possible issues. The disk drive may be working correctly (even for years) for secondary storage, but if its health is low, then personally I'd not recommend for mission critical storage (even if no errors reported by other solutions which may be not sensitive enough and ignore the actual errors, problems counted by the hard disk drive itself - which "just" read and displayed by Hard Disk Sentinel).

Yes of course, this is normal and expected behaviour after the update.
The promotional version can be used for unlimited time, with no registration required. But when updated to any newer version, it automatically switches back to unregistered version.

To make the new, updated version registered, you'd need to order a personal license code, which can be used with both the current latest and all future versions too (as that would offer lifetime free updates too for all future versions).

Janos Mathe Both the Installed and Portable Hard Disk Sentinel PRO versions are (in terms of licensing) same: they are both Professional version: they have 100% same functions, features.

The only difference is how the software deployed (installed OR started from a removable device, eg. pendrive/CD) and started (automaticaly on startup OR manually).

So generally, if you have one license for Hard Disk Sentinel Professional,
you can decide if you prefer to use
- with the Installed version (to get real-time protection)
OR
- with the Portable version (to use by a pendrive, without installation to diagnose / fix issues when launched manually on a Windows PC)

If you prefer to have BOTH the installed and Portable version, then you'd need to have two different licenses: one for the installed and one for the Portable.
Or the most economic solution is to have Professional Family license, which can be used on up to 5 computers (or 5 pendrives - or any combination of them, eg. the installed version on 4 computers and the Portable on 1 computer).

Possibly combine the two phrases (install/register at any time + install within 3 weeks) to conclude that you can install and register any time within 3 weeks. At least that's what I'd do.

Janos Mathe @DJ User: To have a real, lifetime license which grants free updates to all future versions, please consider to order a PRO / PRO Family license, which is offered with 50% discount now. This is the best solution to have protection and cover both the current and possible future (re)installations.

Alternatively, you may create a backup image of the current OS which you can restore with the installed software.

Janos Mathe @William: Please read:

- Each license allows installation on 1 computer.
- Transfer of a license to another owned computer is allowed.

and yes, you can install the license in August only. So you can install (eg. on a test PC), verify and then transfer to the "real" PC which you prefer to protect.

Sorry if this may hurt, but needed to make some decisions when offering the giveaway version. Other sites simply copy/offer the software in a non-official way.

Also the problem was previously that months after (!) the promotions I still saw that "clever" users and websites not only offering the same giveaway installer for free download but also sell them (!) for money, asking $$$ for the free giveaway version.

This should never happens as this way users may pay for it (thinking
that they have real, licensed version with support - but this is not the case).

So we needed to decide to
- stop offering all such giveaway versions
- make some changes to restrict such unwanted use

This is why this change required. I hope you understand and agree that this may be better than no longer offering giveaway versions with our partners.

I try the best to offer such versions exactly to help - but if people mis-use them, then it may cause that this may be not possible.

DJ User @Janos Mathe: I agree that you have to find a way to truncate installs from other sites weeks after promo ends, but to have this statement " Hard Disk Sentinel Standard Edition - Lifetime use and no upgrades" is incorrect. You do not have lifetime usage, and I have argued this many times with other developers.
I have done as you suggested, with other software, that had no re-install allowed.. The results are a disaster. Those softwares went back to trial editions when the backed up OS image was transferred to a new drive.
They also stated lifetime usage with no upgrades, and transfer allowed.
Aug 5 2020 at 9:19am Copy Link

Janos Mathe Sorry, but "Lifetime use and no upgrades" is 100% correct.

I do not really know how other developers offer giveaways, but Hard Disk Sentinel is really offered as "lifetime license" (but with no updates) for free.

You can use for unlimited time, it will never expire.

If you'd backup (image) your system (when this giveaway version of Hard Disk Sentinel installed) and restore, then the software will be working again with all functions, so you continue the lifetime use.
It would turn to unregistered/trial only if you'd update to latest version.

To use the latest possible licensed version, please download Hard Disk Sentinel Pro 5.61 version from the Download page

If the online activation is not possible, then you can use the "Register and activate by e-mail" button to create an un-activated key file (HDSentinel.hds) to the folder of the software. Please send that - and I can activate with your license code and send back the activated file.

William Todd @Janos

While you of course have every right to limit the features that any 'giveaway' provides, if you are saying that "Transfer of a license to another owned computer is allowed" only until August 30th then that should be clarified in the offer, as 'transfer of a license' is not the same thing as 'installing' one (an impression reinforced by the additional "License grants usage on one computer at a time" statement). While I have never had occasion to transfer such a license I always understood that I could do so at any time, possibly by contacting you as the transfer mechanism was not specified.

Just to be clear, I've always appreciated both HDS itself and your frequently making it available without charge as you do here. It provides facilities which few (sometimes VERY few) other applications do, let alone all under one roof.

I especially like having the temperature monitor in my taskbar to know if it is getting hot. Additionally, it has an overall health monitor of the drive. Mine has been dropping approximately 1 percent every month or so.
Aside from those 2 items, I find the GUI very convoluted and difficult to understand. It may be over my head so I am not blaming the software for that, just detailing my experience.

This is the standard version, perhaps the pro version fixes things but this is more of just a monitor.

John User Does anyone know how to prevent this program from starting with the computer? I like this program, but usually end up uninstalling because it always starts with Windows. It is not appearing in the Startup folder and I was unable to find a setting that will allow you to use the program on demand vs. automatically starting.

Thank you.

Janos Mathe It is possible to disable the automatic startup completely, so then it will not show up on your system.

Please select Configuration -> Preference and disable "Load with Windows" option. This way it will not load, not monitor in the background (unless you start it manually) and will not collect status, not report problems too.

In the registered (Pro or this giveaway) version, it is better if you disable the "Display main window when start" on that page, as then it will load - but run only in the background, without displaying the main window with status information - unless you manually open it.
So then it can launch and monitor/report problems but generally work in the
background only.

M User How Differently does this program detect and work for Solid State Drives (SSD) versus conventional mechanical disk drives?

Is there a risk to installing this program on a computer with a SSD - for example, will it end up writing too many times to the SSD, etc?

Thanks
Jan 14 2021 at 11:02am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe There are absolutely no risks at all.
Hard Disk Sentinel designed to write as few data (statistics/logs) as possible, exactly to extend the lifetime of SSDs.
Currently it supports over 6000 different SSD models (slightly more than hard disk models) by displaying both possible errors and health degradations caused by wearout.

Nowadays (according the user reports) more and more users have Hard Disk Sentinel installed on systems where ONLY SSDs used (no hard disk drives at all) to monitor the status changes, determine the speed of the degradation and prepare for possible planned replacement.

Janos Mathe Please check the Store page:
https://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php
which shows the differences between Hard Disk Sentinel standard and Professional version.

The Professional version allows lifetime use and free updates to all future versions - but can be used on 1 (one) system at any given time.

The Professional Family version is (in terms of functionality) is same as the Professional one but can be used on up to 5 computers at any given time. It also grants lifetime use and free updates to all future versions of course.
The 5 computers for the Family license can be in different house/office (can be used by small companies too).

RS I buy a lot of software, and this is arguably the single best software purchase I've ever made. If you want to ensure your data is protected from hard disk failures, this is the title to buy. The competition doesn't come close to the information and predictive analytics that are provided by this program, and Janos, the developer, is amazingly responsive. What is most surprising is that you get all this at a bargain price along with lifetime updates.

I urge you to purchase the professional edition, and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. I've been a licensed users for many years, and I've reached out to Janos several times over this period. Each time he has promptly responded with lengthy and substantive feedback on the problems I was experiencing with my hard disks. As a result, I've not lost a byte of data during this time. Trust me, it's the best $15 you will ever spend in the IT sphere.

No you cannot download from their homepage. First off, its a different version, secondly, the license key is in the setup file that you need to download.

If you already have an older version of HD Sentinel as I did, do not try to install the current version from their download page. It will deactivate any older version that you may have.

BTW, download is still not working in any version of browser that I try. They need to redo this promotion with a new download link. If you try to go through the "Get it for Free" link it will tell you that you have already purchased this software and will resend the same download link that is not working.

(It depends on the browser you are using).

Aaron Aycock The "digitally-collapsing arrow?" It does nothing, all I get now is the same:

"Too Many Downloads"

"This promotion has been downloaded too many times from this link.

You can get this download by making a purchase from this page."

So far, it doesn't matter WHICH browser or operating system I use.
