Helpinator is a versatile user manual authoring and technical writing tool that allows you to generate user manuals and online documentation for all types of apps: Desktop, Web and Mobile. You can even write and publish your own technical books in Helpinator!

If you are still using CHM files for your desktop apps and suffer from compatibility problems you can use one of desktop context-sensitive help systems created by Major Mind Software as a replacement for CHM. The first one in called MajorMindHelp, it is based on HTML and apart from it's own help format it can use SimpleDocServer as a source of context-sensitive help content, or a WordPress website published from Helpinator or even a knowledge base. The other one is LiteHelp, it is a pure offline non-HTML help system, that is lightweight and portable. You can use both help systems free of charge on any number of user PCs if you own a Helpinator license.

Major Mind Software also provides SimpleDocServer (a separate product), a markdown-based webserver for in-house online documentation. You can easily generate SimpleDocServer content with Helpinator.

Helpinator allows to generate html user manuals in the form of a knowledge base. With the help of step-by-step guides you can create a comprehensive online employee handbook for your company HR department.

If you use GitHub for your project, you need at least a file for your project documentation. With Helpinator you can easily generate a, GitHub Wiki or entire GitHub pages website.

You may have heard of an excellent online documentation service called It is based on reStructuredText text markup language. With Helpinator you can generate ReadTheDocs project with a single click and deploy your documentation website in minutes.

WordPress support now includes 2 online documentation themes designed for use with Helpinator and provided free of charge for owners of Helpinator licenses. Each theme is designed to be an add-on for your existing theme (e.g. they are designed to be child themes). You can also install and use free Helpinator WordPress plugin that extends WordPress API with methods for faster publishing of Helpinator content.

If your project is a web-based SaaS you can create online user manual that matches your project frontend UI library, because Helpinator allows to generate WebHelp based on Bootstrap or JQueryUI.

If you develop a mobile app you can use WebHelp based on JQuery Mobile for your project online documentation. Or you can turn this type of WebHelp into a standalone self-service Android kiosk app with Cordova.

But what if your project is a part of a larger project that already has it's own documentation toolchain? No problem, Helpinator also allows to export your project to ASCIIDoc, DITA and DocBook, so you can write your part of content in Helpinator and fit into larger project documentation based on these very popular formats.

If you plan to publish your own tech book, self-publishing is a viable choice nowadays. One of the most easy-to-use online publishing platforms is LeanPub. With Helpinator you can generate LeanPub source project and publish your book for sale online in a blink of an eye. And with WordPress support you can publish parts of your book online on your WordPress blog as a part of your book promotion.

Old popular output formats like PDF, CHM, DOCX, EPUB, MOBI, OracleHelp, JavaHelp, QtHelp are still in place.

Felix User If this is for lifetime updates why then in The Fine Print:
Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 12 months.
For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted by 50%
Lifetime updates and Updates free for 12 month is not the same?

Dmitri Popov Felix,

Looks like we left the fine print on BDJ from another edition that was featured 5 years ago, sorry for that. Info on our order page is the correct one. Lifetime means single payment upfront for all future releases.

Visitor-2014 Hello Dmitri, I would like to ask you the following:

1. I have created a dictionary with an outliner software (information manager). At the moment it consists of about 24.000 entries (keywords) which can be exported as html-files (one html-file for every entry). Is Helpinator able to handle such a big amount of data?

2. My plan is to find a way to publish this dictionary online, possibly as a Wiki. You write on your website that DokuWiki (and some other output formats) "are in the roadmap for nearest releases". Could you tell when approximately this would be the case?

3. Would it make sense to buy already now the current version of Helpinator or is it better to wait until the version with support of DokuWiki is released?

Thank you.

Nico Westerdale Great News! Major Mind Software has agreed to extend this deal for another day - Enjoy!

Dmitri Popov Hello!

1. Depending on the size of the keyword topic file, project size is limited to 2GB.

2. I think you can already go for GitHub pages or GitHub Wiki for content delivery, both are free and based on Markdown. You can generate both with the current version of Helpinator.

3. The price of 99USD won't come back any time soon.

Charles Beauchamp Has anyone used Helpinator to write a thesis?

Is it possible to specify synonyms for topics?

Is it possible to import the HTML files with hyperlinks of a downloaded website?
Dec 25 2019 at 10:31am Copy Link
Dmitri Popov Charles,

it is hypothetically possible to write a thesis with Helpinator, as with any other writing tool, but it does not have built-in support for formulas and handling references to used sources will be a manual work. The new product named WeirdWrench will be more suitable for this task.

If by synonyms you mean symbolic IDs (there are also numerical context ids) then yes.

It is possible to import a set of HTML files, external hyperlinks (those that start with http(s) will be left as is, hyperlinks to html files within that set will be most likely overwritten and turned into internal hyperlinks, if it is possible to locate the target within the set of files.

Charles Beauchamp Thanks for your response. When will WeirdWrench information be available?
Dec 28 2019 at 11:09pm Copy Link
Dmitri Popov Charles,

it's in active development. You can visit and subscribe for the mailing list with release notifications to get notified when new versions arrive.
