Stefan Hauber Is it possible for your product LINKSTASH, you are offering today in parallel to a adiscounted price, instead of password-protect all links, just to protect certain directories (or is it planned for next future releases)?

John Riche @Jon Spain: Thank you for your interest in HelpNDoc. We are a company based in Europe and we sell HelpNDoc in Euros. To conform to the BitsDuJour's audience, we sell HelpNDoc in US Dollars today only. The difference is explained by ShareIt, our payment handling partner, which is taking a fee to proceed US Dollars payments. Just have a look at the normal order page in US Dollars to see the full price charged for HelpNDoc Professional Edition without any discount: http://www.shareit.com/pr...encies=USD -

Despite that, today's deal is still pretty huge compared to the normal price.

Stephen Kreyling A quick question on the upgrades:

If helpndoc goes to version 4.5 in 8 months we will still get free upgrades for the remaining months?

If helpndoc goes to version 4.2 in two year or so, we will still get a free upgrade?

Please clarify..
Dec 5 2011 at 2:29am Copy Link
0
John Riche @Stephen Kreyling Thank you for your interest in HelpNDoc. Both of your statements are true: you'll get a full version cycle of free updates guaranteed (which means till version 4.2 included as current version is 3.2) with a safety period of one year (which means that if you order today, you'll get free updates at least till the 5th of December 2012 included, whatever the versions available till then).
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

John Riche @Michael F Thank you for your interest in HelpNDoc.
HelpNDoc doesn't produce Microsoft Help Viewer 1.x or Microsoft Help 2 files. However, you could tailor the generated output by creating your own template to make it produce sources compatible with those formats and compile it by hand afterwards.

HJ B 1. Is it practical/advantageous to use this product for the generation of web pages and associated pdfs, etc., other than for help in a support sense?

2. HTML permits the creation of pages that are longer and wider than standard paper sizes. The result is that when such pages are printed the html page will span several printed pages, both in the length and width, or else the print is to small to be useful.

Does this product have a means of avoiding that result?

3. I like your website, and the information it provides; however, I did not see an example of an actual help product, including the various formats and reports for that same set of data. Is there someplace I can go to see an example of the full product results, and not just a description of those results?

John Riche @HJ B Thank you for your interest in HelpNDoc. To answer your questions:

1. Absolutely, HelpNDoc comes with a powerful template system which will let you customize the whole HTML output. You could generate web-sites which are completely different from a help file if you'd like

2. Generated HTML is not limited in width an height by default. This can be achieved via CSS

3. You can view HelpNDoc's own help file in various formats online at: http://www.helpndoc.com/online-help

Steve Lewis I tried out the free version and liked it, so I bought a copy earlier today. I paid by Visa card, but on the order page the Payment status is shown as "Payment not yet received"

And I cannot view the invoice but get a window which reads:
"Due to technical reasons, the invoice cannot be displayed. If you believe you have reached this page as a result of an error on our server, please contact Customer Service."

With 2 hours, 12 minutes to go on the special offer, how do I find out if the order has gone through successfully.

Dec 12 2015 at 5:06am Copy Link

John Riche Hello Nelson and thank you for your interest in HelpNDoc.
Please know that once you order HelpNDoc, you receive free updates for at least one year and it will go on as long as a full version cycle hasn't been reached. As an example, if you order HelpNDoc 4.8 today, you will receive free updates for one year. And if one year from now version 5.8 hasn't been released, you will continue to receive free updates till version 5.8 included. Any version you've downloaded during your free update policy can be used as long as you'd like without any limitation. After your free update policy is over, you can choose to purchase an update at a discounted price to continue to receive new versions of HelpNDoc. Currently, the update price is around 45% off the original price.
Best regards,
John, HelpNDoc team.

Bertie Brummel This may be a stupid question: Is HelpNDoc able to do the job vice versa?
I want to convert a complex HTML online manual that includes hundreds of sub-links to *.pdf or another common printable format (doc, docx or similar) automatically?

I know there are tools like 7-PDF but one has to access, then process each site
separately. Very time-consuming.

Thanks!

John Riche Hello Bertie and thank you for your interest in HelpNDoc.
Please know that HelpNDoc can import existing CHM, HTML, ePub and Word Doc, DocX and RTF documents, as well as folders (and their sub-folders) containing multiple files of those formats.
The best format to import is the CHM format as the whole table of contents will be imported in your project.
Your HTML files can be imported at once into HelpNDoc but you will need to manually recreate the table of contents.
Best regards,
John, HelpNDoc team.

Jack Las Did you ever add the ability to embed files (by the library, "include file at generation time"), other than a doc, html, rtf and txt? I wrote a request long ago on this subject. I would like to embed source code file, which is a text file, but it has a different extension. Please add this functionality!

John Riche Hello Jack and thank you for your suggestion. Please know that this is not implemented yet but as a work-around, you could change the file extension to TXT.
Best regards,
John, HelpNDoc team.

Jack Las No, no, this is not the solution. It is very tedious. The files are part of the source code (our applications), including the declaration of interfaces. I generate every few days the documentation for developers, I can't every time rename dozens of files to txt and after save documentation changed extension back to .pas. It does not make sense. Why you don't understand me?

Importing the files like .pas, .inc, .cs, .c or others it is a simple matter for you. Import these files are NO DIFFERENT from the import txt file!

John Riche Jack, please know that we do understand your specific requirement but we need to make sure it is implemented the best way possible: you might be interested to treat unknown extensions as text files but another user might want to treat them differently. HelpNDoc currently uses the file extension to know which importer to use and simply falling back to text file import when we do not recognize the extension might not be the best idea.
Also, please know that there are alternatives such as creating a batch file to rename the files, duplicate them or create a symbolic link with a .txt extension. Then run that batch file prior to importing them into HelpNDoc.
Best regards,
John, HelpNDoc team.

Visitor-2014 Hello,
having tested already various similar programs I discovered now this one. And after some first tests I can say that to my mind HelpNDoc seems to be not only a very good software but one of the best in this category. :-)

Nevertheless I detected some issues which are of importance at least for my needs (that is not so much creating a classical help documentation but primarily a dictionary - with the entries/words as topics):

1) At least as far as I have seen, there seems to be not possibility for the automatic creation of an alphabetical order of the topics in the tree. (I am aware that I can do it manually but this may become cumbersome.)

(All the following concerns the generation of a HTML website):

2) On the created website the correct linespacing is lost (it becomes single even if in the editor of the program the entry was created with 1.5 lines).

3) I miss a feature that the search can be restricted to the titles of the topics (in other words: a search that refers only to the items in the tree and not to the contents itself). Especially for documentations like dictionaries this would be very useful in order to find precisely what you are looking for. (Alternatively a case sensitive search could help too – in case that in the titles of the topics are used only capital letters, as it happens with my dictionary.)

4) When clicking on "Search" the tree ("Contents") disappears and only the search field remains. It would be better if the search field would appear *above* the tree so that the user does not loose the view of the entries in the tree before starting a search.

5) A special problem concerning the search when the topic name consists of non-latin characters (greek characters in the specific case): Usually you type the word you are looking for and below appear the topics which contain this word. This does not happen when the topic name has (e.g.) greek characters: The topic is not listed (but when you open it manually you will find there highlighted the word you were looking for). That means: the search obviously works correctly but the display of the topic (topic name) in question fails. - I assume this is an issue which has to do with Unicode.

Thanks for reading my comment.

PS:
It would be fine if there were a forum on your website where such issues could be described and discussed more comfortably and in detail than here.

John Riche @Visitor-2014 Thank you for your interest in HelpNDoc. We are glad that you like it.
Please feel free to contact us at any time with your questions at https://www.helpndoc.com/contact

1) This is not possible within HelpNDoc but it should be possible to develop a custom script using HelpNDoc's API methods to sort your topics as needed. See: https://www.helpndoc.com/...ipt-editor

2) This can be customized by either creating your own HTML template or add custom CSS to the default template. See: https://www.helpndoc.com/...tings.html

3) I believe that you are referring to the HTML documentation format ? If so, I've added your request to our tracker for further investigation and possible inclusion in a future update. Meanwhile, please know that thanks to HelpNDoc's powerful templating system, you can customize the search engine to use any one you'd like. See: https://www.helpndoc.com/...lates.html

4) Please consider customizing the HTML template to fit your specific requirements

5) We are investigating this as we've had reports this can happen

Thank you for your detailed feedback.

bsr007 Hi John,
I am currently using the trial version of HelpNDoc and it appears to be a great program. I have a couple of questions:
(1) How do you change the default font and size in the main Writer Editor? It is currently set on Arial 10 by default. Is it possible to change this to another value permanently?
(2) If I insert a video into the document it does not appear in Word and pdf outputs. Is this indeed the case? What output formats are movies visible and playable?
Thanks for your help.

Visitor-2014 Thank you, John Riche, for your quick and detailed reply. It's interesting to hear that HelpNDoc can be customized in so many ways. (And yes, question 3 referred to the HTML documentation format.)

May I add an another question that is surely not specific for HelpNDoc but perhaps you have a solution when using your software: A large amount of data (think of some thousand topics) leads either to an equally large number of html files (when using the HTML documentation format - producing a HTML website) or for example to a very big PDF file (when generating a PDF documentation). The result is that opening the website (in the first case) or searching within the PDF file (in the second case) can become an extremely slow process. Do you see any possibility to retain a satisfactory speed when there are many topics? - Thank you.

John Riche @bsr007 Thank you for your interest in HelpNDoc.

(1) See: https://www.helpndoc.com/...w-projects

(2) We recommend that you never include videos: they are often huge and might not be readable on another computer due to missing codecs. The best way is to create a link to a YouTube, Vimeo or any other online video hosting service.
If you must include a video, you can do this for CHM and HTML documentation formats.

Ed Ward I currently use an outliner to "cut and paste" excerpts from online posts, organized under various topics (e.g., Amazon - Retail - Strategy, etc.).
I've downloaded and installed HelpNDoc and have the following questions:
1. Is there a way to have the pasted text follow a style I've set as "default." If so, how is that accomplished?
2. Related, when copying and pasting a post that contains hyperlinks, it is possible to have the hyperlinks pasted into HelpNDoc follow the default style I've set for hyperlinks in HND?
3. Finally, when copying and pasting a post that contains images, is it possible to "automatically" include images in the content pasted into HelpNDoc? I've tried, but only see a placeholder where image appeared in original post.

Thank you.

John Riche Hi Ed Ward. Thank you for your interest in HelpNDoc.

1. From HelpNDoc's "Write" ribbon tab, click the bottom part of the "Paste" button to display the popup menu, then choose "Paste special..." then select how the text is pasted and how styles are applied

2. Depending on the source (e.g. Microsoft Word), if you merge the styles, they will use HelpNDoc's styles

3. Once again, it depends on the source. If images are placed in the clipboard, they will be imported. Otherwise, they won't.

Best regards,

John, HelpNDoc team.

Gary Smith In the "Fine Print" section, the statement:

"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted."

seems to contradict the statement at the top:

"HelpNDoc includes free updates for a full version cycle (for example, 5.8 to 6.8 included), and includes a safety period of one year."

and the statement at the bottom of the description:

"A HelpNDoc license includes at least one year of free updates and continues as long as a full version cycle hasn't been reached."

Can the "Fine Print" be corrected or the other two statements changed please?

Regardless of which statements are correct, if there is a discount when the license ends, what is the discount % for future updates?

Thanking you in advance.

John Riche Hi Gary Smith and thank you for your interest in HelpNDoc.

Please know that once you order HelpNDoc, you receive free updates for at least one year and it will go on as long as a full version cycle hasn't been reached. As an example, if you order HelpNDoc 5.8 today, you will receive free updates for one year. And if one year from now version 6.8 hasn't been released, you will continue to receive free updates till version 6.8 included. Any version you've downloaded during your free update policy can be used as long as you'd like without any limitation. After your free update policy is over, you can choose to purchase an update at a discounted price to continue to receive new versions of HelpNDoc. This is not mandatory or automatic though: if you do not want to receive additional updates, you won't have to do anything.
Currently, the update price is around 45% off the full price.

Best regards,

John, HelpNDoc team.

Can we have the same thing to deploy to wordpress by the click of a button ?

John Riche Hi Alexandre Emeriau and thank your for your interest in HelpNDoc.

Please know that HelpNDoc generates standard HTML 5 web-sites and you have multiple options to integrate your HTML documentation into a WordPress site:

- You can create your own template to customize the HTML code generated by HelpNDoc so that it closely integrates your existing look and feel. You can learn more about templates from: https://www.helpndoc.com/...lates.html
You can then link to any topic of your documentation as described on the following page: https://www.helpndoc.com/...Lhelp.html

- You could use a WordPress plugin to import the HTML files created by HelpNDoc into your CMS

HJ B 1. I understand that this application can be used to generate a help file in pdf format (amongst others), and that it can generate a link to an external pdf document. My impression is that the application cannot import a pdf. Am I correct?

2. It would be helpful if your documentation or website had a list of the top ten or fifteen problems that users call into your website about, and their solutions, aside from what is already mentioning in your help manual?

3, Aside from using this application to generate a help system, in various formats, can this application be worthwhile for generating more general pages of a website, although not necessarily as the main website editor?
