Sputnik I use this software since about 6 years and I must say that I just like it !

There is somehow an option that I would like very much to be included : I would like an option to collapse (or not) automatically all the subfolders after having selected a bookmark to launch in the navigator.

Actually, after having launched a couple of bookmarks located in different places, many subfolders are opened up and when we search for another bookmark it is becoming bothersome to find it easily because of all these upened up subfolders : at this moment I must collapse manually all these to have a better overview of the basic bookmark tree.

That would be a great improvement.

Maybe it would also be a good idea to add a special button for the standard button bar for closing all the subfolders with only one mouse click, independently from the place we are in the bookmark tree.

These modifications would be, for me, a way to eliminate the only annoyance that this software has from my point of view.

Apart from this, this software is really a must have, considering the value of the software itself and the price at which someone may have it for now.

LS can already do the folder collapsing you desire. There are several methods:

1. Options > Bookmark > enable "Automatically expand and collapse folders" (but see the help file for how this works).

2. Toolbar icon "Collapse all subfolders" (relative to the current node).

3. Keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+- for "Toggle all subfolders" and Ctrl+Shift+- for "Collapse all".

4. Folder menu commands for collapsing subfolders or all branches.

Hmm... I think the first option I listed could help you. If used as described in the help file, only one branch will be expanded at a time, and all other branches collapsed. But I may have misunderstood your request.

This option is just not sufficiently powerful for me because there is at least 4 different operations to do to collapse the entire tree up to the first subfolders in about all the cases.

I would like the introduction of functionnalities which would require only 2 operations or none at all to achieve the same result. Do you understand ?

In the current version of LS, only one click is required to keep all branches but the active one collapsed.

1. Enable Options > Bookmark > "Automatically expand and collapse folders"

2. Click on a folder name or icon in the tree; it is automatically opened, and all others are collapsed.

Caveat 1: You may need to manually collapse any already expanded folders the first time you enable this option. After that it works as described.

Caveat 2: A folder expanded with the "+" symbol remains expanded until manually collapsed.

When a great amount of subfolders are opened up, there is still the difficulty to find what you are searching for to click on it for closing down all the other subfolders.

But that is anyway a nonsense because if I want to be able to collapse all the subfolders automatically and having nothing to do manually about it, it is exactly for being able to find more easily what I am searching for.

Are you trolling me or what ?

After reading your reply, I understand this isn't a solution for you. I did think Scott nailed it. You ask to simplify collapsing all folders that are opened and for this to be done automatically. Pressing Ctrl+Shift+- (Folder>CollapseAll) collapses all folders from anywhere, *but* it's not an automatic action when you launch a bookmark. If I understand, you want this to happen when you launch a bookmark?

But I have checked this problem again and I think that the automatization of the bookmarks' collapsing would be difficult to achieve if we want something with which the user would be perfectly comfortable.

The reason I say this is because the bookmarks' tree appears at two different places : when you open up LinkStash for launching a bookmark and when you open it up for adding a bookmark to LinkStash.

For a conveniance reason, someone would maybe prefer the tree to be collapsed when he wants to add a bookmark and he would also maybe prefer the tree not to be collapsed when he wants to add a bookmark. The point here is that at the two places (launching and adding) it is exactly the same tree we are talking about and this tree will be shown in its same state at these two different places at a given moment in time.

Before asking to you to add such an option concerning an automatic collpase of the tree, I will think again about this question to find something with which each user would be comfortable.

For the moment, the "Ctrl + Shift + -" option is what is nearer of what I would like for collapsing entirely the tree from anywhere you are in the tree.

The only thing is that I almost don't use any hotkey since I work with a mouse. When I used to work without any mouse 25 years ago, I used hotkeys very often and they were very useful, but at this moment your fingers were always on the keyboard, never leaving it.

Today, with the generalized use of the mouse, leaving the mouse to go on the keyboard for entering an hotkey and then go back again to the mouse is something that breaks the workflow, from my point of view. I know that from the point of view of someone else it may not appears as breaking this workflow, but from my point of view it does and I think that I am not the only one in that case.

Finally, what I would ask from you is simply to add an additional button to the toolbar which would do the same thing as the "Ctrl + Shift + -" hotkey. Someone would at this moment collapse the whole tree from anywhere in it without leaving the mouse.

For my needs, the actual button which is collapsing the tree is doing it only from the place you are in the tree. If you want to collapse the whole tree and that you have a lot of opened subfolders and that you are at the very bottom of the tree you have to get to the very beginning of the tree to collapse it all. Here, I know that the "Ctrl + Shift + -" hotkey would be a faster solution but not the fastest one compared to this new button I would like to see.

John Williams Garrett, LS can read the webpage title and/or description from the website. You need to click "retrieve from website" in the bookmark properties, e.g. when adding the bookmark to fill in the description. LS supports tags, but it won't get those from the website, you can make up your own or use the existing ones. Tags can be searched, but the next version will allow filtering/viewing bookmarks by tags.

Please let me know if this software is actively continuing development. If so, what features do we have to look forward to?
Also, can this software operate from my USB key? I use a password tool that works from my USB key and is very handy to me as I use multiple computers everyday.
If this can not be installed on a USB key, then please let me know how many of my computers and laptops I can install your software on. I am the only person with access to these computers and do not have multiple staff or anything like that.

_*_ @Chris Dino, & Mappi75, while I cannot answer lie the developer could, I would suggest you download both and try each one out for yourselves.

For me personally, the main thing that draws to toward LinkStash is its ease of use. Linkman for me was very busy to work with at times.

Linkman appears to have more features, but I did not find myself using most (or remembering most) when I did a trial of the program.

Visually, I think LS looks better overall.

The main thing I like about Linkman is the fact for an additional 50% to the cost you can purchase a Lifetime License. That is the main draw for me personally, but I still lean toward LS.

This is not likely what you two are looking for in an answer, but it is a starting point at least.

Try them both out and make your own decision.

Kelly Hamblin I've used LinkStash for years now and have nothing but praise for it. However, after switching from FF to Pale Moon, LinkStash won't add bookmarks - at least not in any way I've yet been able to figure out - and it does not open automatically when I open the browser. Does the new version support Pale Moon and other browsers less popular than IE, FF, and Chrome?

I am using version 2.1.3 and would like to grab this opportunity to upgrade for today's price. However, I would like to know first, if it will work for me. I'm betting the answer is yes 'cause XRayz Software rocks! (I also use ClipCache).

John Williams Sputnik, thanks for the feedback about the toolbar button. You can use the mouse too, but I know it's not the same as a toolbar click. The command is Right-click any folder, Collapse > Collapse all. Or Folder menu Collapse all. I hope that helps.

John Williams Ken User, LinkStash is being developed all the time, the last release was just a few days ago. Next feature to add is filtering/viewing bookmarks by tag. Replacing text. Improvements to existing features. Much more.

LinkStash can be installed on USB or any portable device or a desktop. It's not a separate download, just a single download. When you run the installer, it asks if you want a portable or normal install.

You can use the same single license on both desktop install and portable install.

John Williams Merle One, LinkStash doesn't import LinkMan files. If you can export as HTML you can import them to LS. But any LM specific fields would not be present.

John Williams Wayne, This offer is for both portable and desktop, the license will allow you to run both.

To import from Chrome, open the Chrome bookmark manager (Ctrl+Shft+O), click Organize|Export bookmarks to HTML. Start LinkStash and choose File>Import>Mozilla/NetscapeBookmarks. You can import to a specific folder if you wish, by using the folder right-click menu.

Don't forget to add the Chrome extension (see our download page) which will give you a button in Chrome to add bookmarks and open LS. That is the only way to add bookmarks from Chrome.

_*_ @John Williams, I hope you really do include the "Favicon" into a not-to-distant release of LinkStash.
Personally, I think they are immensely useful. It is a very quick way to scan a list of links to locate via the "Logo" Icon for that site (which most sites have these days).

I have many sites I go to on a regular basis known to me through the icon displayed in the address bar. I really hope to see it implemented in one of your updates.

A massive list of globes is not very useful. When every site icon looks alike there is no real reason for an icon at all. No distinction of icons makes it so the one icon you use has no great purpose.

You asked how LS and Linkman compare. I made a careful feature-by-feature comparison in July 2013 when I needed a bookmark manager to more easily work with multiple browsers. (I now use Chrome exclusively, but still use LS for bookmarks because it is so much easier than any browser's bookmark function.)

I started with Linkman because it offers a free edition. I was just about to pay for the additional features of Linkman Pro when I realized how awkward and even confusing several aspects of its interface and workflow were. That's when I tried LS.

In short, LS was far more intuitive and easy to use, and had more truly useful features than Linkman. I uninstalled Linkman without a regret. If given the choice today between free Linkman and paid LS, I would pay the full retail price for LS without hesitation. It is one of the most well-designed, smoothly-operating programs I have ever used. I would not want to use the Internet without it.

singularity @Scott Youngman I have been trying the trials of both LS and LM in the last hour. I agree with you. The UI of LM is dull and confusing for a beginner. Importing bookmarks were easier though. In LS I had to export and then import by pointing to the html file. LM seems to have addons for all browsers. How can we add a bookmark to LS directly from browser, I use FF.

You can set up a hotkey to add a bookmark directly from a browser; Options > Hotkey. I assume that works in FF. It does not work in Chrome, but there is a toolbar add-on available instead. John can probably give you a better answer, but you can try that for now.

John Williams Chris Dino, LinkStash was designed so that it didn't rely on browser add-ons. You can bookmark the current browser tab from anywhere. So that means you do the same thing to bookmark a page from any browser.

The exception is Chrome. It must use the Chrome extension (download linked from our download page) to add a bookmark. This extension adds a button to Chrome to: Bookmark the active tab, Bookmark all tabs or Open LS.

You can use a global hotkey to add a bookmark. Or you can use a browser add-on to add a toolbar button. You can press the hotkey from anywhere, even if you are in notepad. LS adds the bookmark of the most recently used browser tab. Or you can use the tray icon menu, or the LS main program.

Toolbar buttons are available for IE, FireFox, Opera and Chrome, and any browser that lets you call external programs.

Merle One @john williams : I exported my Linkman bookmarks to IE then re-imported the whole IE favorites, but I lost indeed the specific tags that were entered into Linkman. Is there an easy way to import those ? Maybe it would be best to pursue on Linkman Website (forum or e-mail).

The version I downloaded first is definitely v 3 (at 1029 kb), while I subsequently downloaded v3.5 (1454kb) after reading PeLi's post about the portable option with a link to the latest version.

The first one came from a link provided as a result of my purchase. However, having looked back through the confirmation emails I can't now see that link, so it was probably on the purchase confirmation web page which displayed after my purchase (I seem to recall that the link was a small bright orange rectangle)

John Williams Merle One, LinkStash is pretty good at backups. It maintains multiple backups. By default it keeps the 3 most recent backups, which it makes periodically, but you can change this number to more or less, or turn it off. You can assign the backup folder to the local Dropbox, Google Drive (etc.) folder and have it sync for you. See the options in the General tab, Backup options.

John Williams Don't forget that LinkStash bookmarks URLs and also files, documents, picture files etc. Launching file bookmarks in LS opens them.

John Williams Chris Dino, that toolbar image is not normal, it doesn't look like that here. Look at the screenshots to see how it should look. But there is an issue where this can happen though, and I'm aware of it, but it's rare. It will be fixed. Did you restart LS and did the problem go away?

John Williams Chris Dino, I'm not sure what you mean here, click Tools>Options. On the General tab there are three buttons at the bottom: Confirmations, Backup options and Page setup. Do you see those OK? Click Backup options. Screenshot link:

John Williams Merle One, you are correct the backup message was was meant for Chris. I'm not sure if LM exports tags to IE. It could be that it does to HTML (Mozilla/Netscape format) and the only way would be for LS to read those tags. I would need to add support for that, assuming they are output by LM. Have a look at the exported HTML file.

singularity @John Williams.. Ok I sorted that out. Clicked the options icon in standard button bar and it then gave me the options windows. Now The menu tools > options and "Ctrl + I" works to open options windows. I have no idea why those launched setup wizard before. Maybe a bug?

Kelly Hamblin I purchased the app and installed over the old version. All went well. Then I attempted to update to the latest version 3.5.1. That did not go well. I got this error message:

C:\The Location Where I Installed Ver 3.0.0\lsmon.exe
An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file:
DeleteFile failed; code5.
Access is denied.
Click Retry to try again, Ignore to skip this file (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation.

I'm sure that updates are free until version 4 comes out, so I think this is a glitch. I am, however, wondering if anyone else has had the same trouble.

Uh oh, now I see that the it has been updated to version 3.5.1 even though I chose to abort the INstall because of the warning.

What should I do?

Robert Bull @Kelly Hamblin: do you have "permission" to install files? I mean, do you have UAC On, and have to elevate permission as an administrator before you can overwrite a file in the Program Files folder? Does LS work if you install it as portable?

John Williams Kelly Hamblin, installing over the old version is the correct way to do it. I would install version 3.5.1 again. See if you get the warning. If you still do, you can terminate lsmon.exe and try again. I have had no reports of this before, and I can't reproduce it here. Maybe you have something particular on your system that's preventing it from being overwritten during install?

"PayPal order processing is not available. Please select another payment method."

First off PayPal customers should not be forced to type in personal information, as this is one of the main points of having PayPal. Then to go through the entire process only to be told it is not available is ridiculous.

There should be a PayPal payment if it offers the choice.

Well... that maybe OK for you, but I use the favicon like I would for any application or file. It's the place my eye lands on first, and it clearly shows me which bookmark to click on. In fact, many time I don't even have bookmark names (i leave these blank, or with a single space".

When I'm traveling and looking for a place to get a quick bite, it's the "golden arches" I see first.... I don't go to each restaurant's drive-through searching their menus for a "Big Mac".

The lack of fave icon support is a deal-breaker for me.

I tired installing again with the same results. I don't know what you mean about terminating Ismon.exe. Are you saying I should delete the file? Looking at the folder where the app is installed I see this:
1 file (Linkstash.exe) has, oddly, a modified date of 9/3/2014.
3 other files have a modified date of 9/9/2014.
Ismon.exe and lnkstash.chm have modified dates of 3/19/2013.
lss.dat and stock.dat have modified dates of 4/26/2010.

So I am guessing that everything is not updating. As to having something particular on my system that prevents if from being overwritten, I have no idea what that might be.

John Williams Kelly Hamblin, dates look good, except lsmon, which didn't update, some reason it can't be overwritten on your system. Go into LS options, Startup tab, and uncheck "Start LinkStash when a web browser starts". Exit LS and run the installer. Then you can turn that option back on if you need it. Let me know if that works.

John Williams conceptualclarity, the browsers that can be set up in LinkStash are: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Pale Moon (Firefox derived), Safari, Maxthon2, Maxthon3, these obsolete browsers can also be set up: Mozilla, Netscape 7 + 8 and NetCaptor. Not all browsers have the same level of support though. Hope that helps.
