Windows users sulking over not having Scrivener should try out LSB (or buy a Mac...)

Jimmy Redox I bought my first Mac to use Scrivener, a great program for writers but I spend time on PCs, too. I'm getting LSB to use when I'm stuck on Windows. C'mon, people! $15.95 and ALL future upgrades are free?! If you have even the slightest interest in this program how could you possibly go wrong?

Tom B. Looks like a powerhouse! I can think of many uses, such as multimedia writing projects, organizing and storing my programming code snippets along with screen shots of what those snippets do, journals and more. Can't resist this great price, so I'm buying now even though it will be a few weeks before I have time to learn the program. Thanks!

Kelly Hamblin I've been using this program since I downloaded it from GOTD and have been hoping it would show up here so I could afford to purchase it. I was VERY happy to find it on the upcoming list this morning and can't wait until the deal day arrives. This is the most versatile application of its kind that I have found. While there are a few things I would change, I have no doubt the "authors" will get to it soon. Liquid Story Binder is constantly being upgraded and improved and I have great faith in its future.

V K I've tried LB for a couple of weeks. It's a brilliant concept, but the human factors are a nightmare. Among just a few problems:
*Great flexibility means great confusion - the tools are scattered illogically between different menus (and different menus in different menus).
*Horrible documentation - the tutorials help - slightly - they will tell you how to start planners, listings, timelines, but there's almost nothing about how to use them.
*Worse Help - more than half the things I searched for through help didn't find a reference, and the rest hit primarily (not exclusively) on trivial information that I had already figured out on myself.
*Not WINDOWS - the program is not windows standard. You cannot go full screen, for example, by double-clicking the top window frame. The save key is F12, not Ctrl-S and so on.
*Command line interface. Most of the best features, dossiers, timelines, outlines, are crippled by an ugly command-line interface. You cannot edit information where you're using it (in the timeline, outline, etc) but have to use the text bar at the bottom.
There are many things LSB has done right (avoiding proprietary editor formats, for example)., but due to its shaky interface and poor documentation, I will probably not purchase the product.

PauloQ Q I have to agree with VK Says. LsB is probably the best software I have seen, but its very hard to find how to work the brilliant tools LST have. Poor menus, help doesn't work , not intuitive , etc.
Once you find how to work with it, it will be a dream. But the learning curve is very hard. It seems a software made by nerds, you know. They think everything is simple. A tip. LSB; hire someone who don't know the software, see for yourself the problems the person have, and then change it. Just do this. No more upgrades needed.
BTW, you can hire me. oportunide1AThotpop.com. My first language is not even english, so you will need to understand me. Thats what you need to make a customer happier. Understand them. Me. PauloQ oportunidade1AThotpop.com

SM Payne To both of those last comments, I was originally bothered by the shortcuts, then I found out that I could configure my own hotkeys. And full screen can be shortkeyed to. Most right clicks will get you excellent context menus. I personally love the bottom editing on dossiers (my file type of choice), but truly, whatever floats your boat.

If you want to reccomend to Jesse (the designer) what menus would make better sense to you, go for it. He's working on the new version as I type.

I personally figured out the entire software in a day or two without referencing tutorials except the three steps (to figure out where to dump all my previous "fodder" which was builders by the way). I found it very intuitive and could not live without it.

Paula Gill By far the most flexible, creative, and powerful writing software I've ever used. I had to take a year off from my writing due to work and a really big move, and it was so easy to dive back into my WIP. Everything I needed was there in LSB, so well-organized and just waiting for me. Thanks for a great product!

Bob R Does LSB have the capability to "hide" and "reveal" text (I forget the technical name the outliners use)?

Also, how well does LSB handle outlining, particularly moving topics up or down?

Thank you.

Ellen Easton-Nelson I've had a horrible disaster and I need help. I bought LiveJournal writing software. I installed it on my laptop but didn't back it up by burning it to CD. Then I had to redo my laptop due to a virus. At that time, I contacted you and you gave me a link to re-download it and the key for it.

OK, so that time I did burn it to CD and I had that in a bag I carry when I travel, so I didn't think more of it. Well, last week I had to restore my hard drive on the laptop again because of a virus but I didn't burn another CD because I thought it might just transfer damage to the new hard drive and besides, I thought there wasn't any need. After all, I had saved it on CD, hadn't I?

Now I'm getting ready to participate in the Novel in a Month they do in November for NaNoWriMo every November. I've discovered there's no backup CD!!! I left it in the bag and I lost the bag when I went on the train to Seattle last month! I called the hotel and the train station but nobody turned it in. In a way, thank god the laptop wasn't in it because I had it in a different laptop bag but in another way, it's a disaster because I've lost the software CD!

Could I please, please get another download and key? This time I swear I'll make three or four backup CD's and stash them in various places so if I lose one, at least I'll have more if the computer has to be restored again. I don't often have the money to buy things for myself because I'm raising grandkids but I splurged on this writing software from you and I loved it.

I don't know what month I downloaded it but it was before the last New Year, I think. Or maybe a little after. It was when you had the special on it for $20.

Waiting to hear from you.

John K. Smith I wait for the next sale of this kind by Black Obelix and then I will buy it. Many people (as I) start to buy their x-mas presents already in November.

If Black Obelix would come up with a sale in November, people would probably buy more than one copy of the software to have a nice x-mas present for friends or family members.

Bob S Can you describe whether/how Liquid handles "hoisting?" Two-pane outliners allow one to place topics in the right-hand pane, body in the left-hand pane.

I would like a text editing/writing tool that does "in-line" hoisting - e.g., the text beneath a heading or sub-heading can be collapsed or expanded, without leaving the main window. When a topic is collapsed, only the heading shows. When expanded, both the heading and text body are shown.

Does Liquid do anything like this?
Jan 12 2010 at 4:13pm Copy Link

Bob S Looks like the "Outline" feature allows one to do this, as well as nesting of sub-topics.

Does the Outline mode offer "full fledged" editing (e.g., fonts, highlighting, etc.) or is it limited?

Thank you.

Brian W @Bob S, you can go to the Black Obelisk website and download a fully functional trial, play around with it for a while, and buy if you like it. You just get a product key when you buy from here that you can enter in and be good to go.

This is exceptional software for writers. It does have a bit of a learning curve. Like, you actually need to read the tutorials and you will have to click through the help files a bit. I have tried quite a few other applications for writers, but this one is the most versatile and allows the most customization. You will need to develop a system that works for you, and then all the pieces will make sense, and you'll love it.

I currently have LSBXE open with a Workspace that has the following: Listing (used as Table of Contents), File Listing (to access unsorted documents), the bulk of the screen occupied by a Chapter, a Planner on the right (which I use as a glossary of names--a Builder would also work for this), and a small space below that with a Gallery of images I reference (tree diagrams, character look-a-likes, etc).

It's great being able to have easy access to EVERY chapter you've written in one window. Try doing that with Word and see how crazy you go. When I finished my book of 30+ chapters, I used the manuscript builder function in my Listing to create one file exportable as .doc, .rtf, .txt, or .html.

Bob S LSB Developer - just tried the Outliner in LSB.

Two things I find very peculiar:
(a) there doesn't appear to be a "drag and drop" feature that allows one to move topics around; instead, only arrows for moving topics up/dow, right/left in the outline - is that correct?
(b) When I moved a topic ahead of another topics (e.g., from #3 to #2), the topic moved, but not its subtopics. Is there a way to "lock" subtopics to their parents? This seems counter to what one would want and expect - how do you move an entire section - item and its children - at once?

Bob S I like the hoisting feature that allows one to collapse/expand subtopics. Nicely implemented... I couldn't figure out what the orange symbol next to a topic signified, however.

Jim Maioriello Interesting software concept.  Is this product a workspace for organizing work developed in other programs, or is does it provide the tools for creating outlines, mindmaps, lists, plans?  Is there a hierarchy for these objects used by the program?  If so, is there a summary of that hierarchy available? This appears to be a lot of functionality and layers to the program.  Must have taken a while to develop this?  How long has it been in development?

These tools include Outlines, Checklists, Storyboards, Timelines, Mindmaps, Galleries, Playlists, Dossiers and Journals. These tools (as well as many others) are specifically designed for Liquid Story Binder XE. Liquid Story Binder XE has been under development for five years.

Alan Carr I think this could be very useful to me, though at present I have no idea how to use it. I'm a sales copywriter, and as such I often have a heap of notes and research documents while putting together the structure and content of a salesletter, brochure etc. Can this import and export Word documents? It seemed to be trying to export an image bitmap file when I fiddled with it earlier? If it can only copy and paste such text, does it maintain true formatting, including docx files? Which, of the bewildering array of options, would you recommend for my use? Ideally what I'd like is a primary document in the middle, with notes and such down the side/s, to save constantly switching tabs or documents. I do NOT need images, yet everything I poke at seems to be offering an image gallery as much as text areas (I haven't poked much yet, as I don't have time to explore what looks like a vast program). Also, when purchasing, how many computers can I use it on? I regularly work with 3 different computers and a laptop. Is that a problem? Cheers, Alan

Jesse Wall For importing and export, Liquid Story Binder XE uses basic RTF. Paste content directly into Liquid Story Binder XE from your current word processor. I would suggest using a Builder to organize your research notes. Builders combine multiple rich text documents sorted into a single file with titles, descriptions and color indexing. Use one Builder for each project. Use a like-named associated Chapter as your primary document. See this online Builder tutorial... http://www.blackobeliskso...lders.html For your own personal use, Liquid Story Binder XE may be used on as many systems as you like. Try installing Liquid Story Binder XE on a thumb drive for portable use.

Ron K Sorry to bring up the portable thing again, but does LSBXE only behave as a portable app if it's on a removable drive? Or does it know, or is there a way to tell it to be in 'portable mode' even though it's on a fixed disk? I use portable apps where possible, but they're generally in a folder on a hard drive rather than left on a USB stick. Thanks for your help, and either way, I'm buying two licenses, but I'd still like to know.

Jesse Wall Yes, this is Liquid Story Binder XE.  Version 4.71.  All future upgrades are free.
Black Obelisk Software - Jul 20 2010 at 6:35am Copy Link

Jesse Wall Liquid Story Binder XE will run in portable mode if installed on any drive other than your main C:\ drive. However, if you install LSBXE in "C:\Liquid Story Binder XE\" you can trick Liquid Story Binder XE into running in portable mode. In portable mode, LSBXE is self-contained and will not use the designated Windows Local Application Data folder to store its library settings.
Black Obelisk Software - Jul 20 2010 at 6:44am Copy Link
1
Jesse Wall One further note concerning portable mode... Liquid Story Binder XE allows you to store your LSBXE 'Library' anywhere. Your entire Library (or seperate portions of your Library) can be stored on a portable drive and accessed by a standard, non-portable LSBXE installation. LSBXE even allows you to manually move your Library using Windows.

Bill D I sincerely apologize to everyone for stupidly stating that I could not upgrade my copy of this SW. Upon further investigation I find that my copy came from Give Away of the Day many years ago.

Well, by trying to upgrade my GAOTD version I have lost my registration priveleges. This is certainly just desserts.

This SW has served me well and I recommend it to everyone interested. I am embarrassed that I have been using this software and forgetting that I received it gratas from Black Obelisk many years ago via GAOTD.

Pat Weber Does anyone know if any new features have been added since the last time BDJ offered this software?
Jul 8 2011 at 5:12am Copy Link

Mitchell Kastner I use two pane outliners to write briefs and academic articles.

LSB has an outliner and a mindmapper. Assume that the parts of an LSB are called "items" (and "sub-items", etc). After I create an item in an outline or mindmap, can I create or attach a document to the item? Two pane outliners and all mindmappers permit a word processing document called "notes" in mindmappers. Does LSB? It appears not. It appears that "Chapters" are the organizational metaphor that are created in the Planner, but it does not appear that Planner permits tree-like hierarchical organization of Chapters or the creation of SubChapters and descendants therefrom.

This would be a terrible disappointment to me because the software otherwise appears brilliant for my uses.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens I'd really be interested in LSBXE, but not only for creative writing - I think many of the features could be very helpful for writing technical documentations, too.

Using MS Word as external editor I was able to get around some of the technical limitations of the internal editor, but there's still one thing that doesn't seem to work: I'd like to insert images, but the images I added using Word are simply ignored. Is there a way to accomplish this?

I'm sorry if it can be found in the tutorials or in the manual - today I just don't have the time to search for it...

Thanks in advance!

Ian G I just bought this software after trying it for a few days. I tried it because I read these posts.. I'm impressed with the exchanges from the developer himself... its exactly what you want to see when buying a small company software.. a hands on engaged team that believe in their product.. (you'll always get your moneys worth).

I tried the software.. and was a little surprised by how much time I had to spend on it to 'understand' it.. after a couple of days watching tutorial vids and playing with it I completely understand it.. its excellent!

I can use it to write articles, novels, and varuous other low research pieces but I can also now easily compile due diligence for technical writing, biographies, and other non-fiction projects as it allows you to include your research and factual data in various ways.

It also has a robust character development tool that will come in very handy for video game plot writers and imaginative science-fiction writers.

...And thanks to bitsdujour.com I managed to purchase a license today for $27.10 Total inclusing taxes (Canadian)

Bood for you Black Obelisk!.. You are attracting a lot of impressed writers to your product.. seeling it cheap (its worth much much more lets face it) is entrenching it as a robust but affordable piece of software.. I'm sure we will gladly pay for main updates as they come out at these prices for years to come.. Writers write for life.. its in our blood.. so hats off to you for a great product and clever and hands on marketing!

This program was previously offered at 43% discount and 70% discount is the cheapest I have seen. Liquid Story Binder (LSB) is an excellent writer's program plus many other uses as well. Click on the "Loaad 76 Older Comments" above your post and you will see candid user's comments of pros & cons. It does take about 2 days to get comfortable with the program. Don't let that scare you away -- you will be rewarded for your time. Now, about Bits du Jour since you're new here.

It's just about the best place on the web to try out software and obtain it at smokin' prices. HINT: You don't have to wait for "Coming Soon!" Below the "I want this" green button above is a red arrow pointing down to "Download Trial." You can get it TODAY, test drive if FOR FREE, and see if it's for you. The developer is a good guy, supports the product better than the big software companies AND, I can say this from experience: LSB is equal in quality and capability to another writer's program retailing for $270 (brand concealed to protect the guilty.)

Hitman Yes, it is highly rich in features, but it does not support Unicode (well, you can type Unicode characters, but then you encounter all kinds of issues, like failure to select text, and other apparently random behavior, etc), this is never a problem for English-only writers, but if you are bilingual, then you need a different program that supports Unicode well.

Learning curve is very steep, but it rewards the effort.

It does need updating, and I am told Jesse took 2012 off to write his own novel.

I own a license and use the program every day. It doesn't crash, nor has it ever lost my work. Some parts of it like the mindmap are best left alone but there are many exceptional tools in the program.

I do buy programs here that I might use if the offer is too good to refuse - and we all have a book inside us LOL. When the program WAS being updated, it was done quite frequently so the lack of updates in over two years sends a clear message in the absence of developer comments.

It was a dark and stormy night. Dr. Teeth stood on the deck of his rustic summer cottage looking out across the lake. The sun was just about to set, and the sky was alive with shades of orange, red and purple. Lightning stabbed to the ground nearby and a clap of thunder rolled through the night. A flying salmon leapt into the air in the distance, hung motionless for a second and then splashed silently back into the lake. ...

Dale Rose @Jesse: are there any plans for an update in the foreseeable future? I've been eying LSB for awhile, but I'm hesitant to invest the time and energy in working with a new software package for writing if there are no plans to keep it maintained in the future. Thanks.

Morris Jones I was looking at this software also and Dale brings up an important issue. I too am hesitant to buy a software package with no plans to maintain and update the product. Three years is quite a long time to have done nothing. Unless this software package was written with no software bugs and future features have been added already... I am amazed!

Jesse Wall Hi Guys,

At this time LSBXE is no longer under development. I've long since come the the conclusion that LSBXE needs to be completely re-written in order to make any further significant updates.

That being said, LSBXE is still actively supported. I'm always here to answer your questions.

Dale Rose @Morris: Jesse's response notwithstanding, I've been a member of the LSB discussion group for quite some time after joining to ask a couple of pre-sales questions. The consensus among LSB users is that LSB is pretty feature-rich and future prepared -- there's been no great demand for an update due to missing features or serious bugs. The only potential issue is a tablet version, and some users are using it on tablets of various sorts with varying results. LSB has a free demo, so if it fits your needs, it may still be a great option for you, at least until something new comes along. LSB users are mostly of the opinion that it beats the other major products hands down. I tend to agree -- I still haven't bought anything myself because I keep coming back to this product.

@Jesse: Thanks for the honest and straightforward reply! I may take the plunge anyway because your user base seems so satisfied with LSB and despite a year or so of looking at other products, nothing else seems as functional. I hope one day you can muster the time and energy to re-write the code and release a new version!

Gde Swart OMG you people! Such hand-wringing. Its not even $14.
I picked this up last time it was on BDJ. It is a well thought out, versatile and dare I say innovative piece of software. The learning curve is small and the included tutorial/help is very well done. I'm running it on Win7-64 and I've yet to experience a problem with it. It plays well with other software that I use. If no one helps out the small developer there will never be a new version.

DroidLuvr While I always like to see software actively developed and supported, I also have been running this with no problems on my Win7-64bit laptop... I purchased it the last time around at BDJ and am satisfied with the purchase, despite the lack of development, because I have had no issues with it at all! Also, the developer seems very responsive to supporting this although since I haven't had any trouble, I've never really needed support :)

I would recommend it for anyone looking for this specific type of software!

R Master This is one of those software packages that I have no immediate use for, but is too good of a deal to pass up. Installed quickly, with no problems, is totally portable (USB Stick) and works well (In the 20 minutes I have been playing around with it).

Lots of features for the money, menu is a little different but easy to use and intuitive. I hate having to update software too much - like monthly - just to have it work. As long as this program works for years to come, I don't care if it is not brand new

Not having built-in help files is a pet peeve of mine - but this program even has its own built in help files that a lot of more expensive programs lack - sending you a pdf of referring you to online help instead, which is inconvenient. Nicely done.

Thanks for this great software offer!

DoctorG I'm wondering if somebody can tell me what kind of storage system this program uses for your data, i.e., single file, multiple file, database, etc? I ask because I often write on more than one computer, and the data format will dictate my options: either to store LSB's data files on a centralized file server (e.g. network or 'cloud'), or to synchronize the data file(s) between the different computers. So it will be helpful to know my options ahead of time. Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this.

I'm currently using Anthemion "Writer's Cafe" for writing projects, but LSB looks intriguing and I'd love to see how it compares.

DoctorG Do the devs/publisher of Liquid Story know that it's being sold here? I'm fine with them wanting to profit from software that hasn't been updated since 2011, but it's a shame that no representative from their company could be bothered to answer a simple question from a prospective buyer.

MSWallack It's been more than 8 years since any updates to the software and 5 years since the developer said:

"At this time LSBXE is no longer under development. I've long since come the the conclusion that LSBXE needs to be completely re-written in order to make any further significant updates.

So buyer beware...

Chuck The website was updated at some point to include Windows 10 as an OS, but otherwise no actual program updates in years. The program has a LOT of options; maybe too many options. As such, it comes with a relatively steep learning curve, but may be worth the risk and small price relative to other comparable writing software.

No Name I just assumed that it was done. I've had no problems with it, and it's been pretty rock solid for my uses. If you just want the editor, there's also Momentum Writer which just includes that for a minimal experience for free: http://www.blackobeliskso...index.html

Kelly Hamblin The thing about Liquid Story Binder is that it has EVERYTHING, timeline, storyboard, mindmap, and more. Use them all or only use the ones you need. At $11.48 it is a steal.

Colin McAllister I am intrigued by the "recording" feature, as I'm writing training material for online use. I thought it might be good to include a recording to some sections, to add a quick bit of additional info to what is being read onscreen.
I made two recordings and have searched for them without success. I tried "recordings" under "help", but that says nothing about where recordings are saved to. I tried "saving", but I'm still no wiser. I give up...

Where does LSB save recordings to? Anyone know?

Jesse Wall Although still fully supported, Liquid Story Binder XE is no longer under development. It works under Windows 10. If you want to make sure it works on your system, download the trial version -- it's exactly same as the full purchased version.

Robert User >"Although still fully supported, Liquid Story Binder XE is no longer under development."

My concern is that the websites shows: Last Update: February 2011 and the Changelog does not have dates when the changes were made. The last update was nearly 10 years ago.

Still "fully supported" does not give me an easy feeling that this product has much of a future. There has to be a reason why the product is not still being developed. Is it due to a different product, or has the primary developer been lost? We would like to know. Otherwise, it sounds more like this is a "sell as many as we still can, while we can" but without any guarantee that users that find errors will get those fixed. There is no way of guaranteeing that just because the trial installs and works today that there could not be a problem later on. Users will have no one to go to get those problems taken care of. So, rather than "fully supported" what are the intentions for the future of this software and the company, and how can users be assured of purchasing a product that will work for them 10 years from now?

Jesse Wall As the developer of Liquid Story Binder XE, in all honesty, I can't guarantee that LSBXE will still be up and running in 10 years. At this time, I have no plans to return to programming, no plans to update the software. Please, do not purchase LSBXE if this concerns you. I'm proud of LSBXE. I'm glad people still enjoy the software -- even after all these years.

Thanks Jesse Wall. I appreciate your response, and I do understand. Sometimes, programmers want to retire too. Assuming you are retiring, best of luck to you in the remaining years.

Mitchell User Two days ago I downloaded and installed the program and it runs perfectly well under Windows 10. (I had to turn off my virus protection to download the file and convince Windows that the program was harmless.) I was able to register the program with a password from the license I purchased in 2011. So what if the program has not been updated in several years? If it does the job very well, it is valuable at this reduced price.

V M When was the last update with this software?

Louis H @V M,

Not sure of the exact date when the last version was released, looked and found no copyright date, but the most current version is 4.93. I bought this deal back in 2016, forgot about it. Contacted the company yesterday and they sent a new SN# within a short time. I'm using it again, on a Win 11 system, with no current problems noted, but it's only the 2nd day of reusing it. I don't know if the vendor will be around during this promotion, but as a user, if you have any questions, if I can I would be glad to check things out for you that my workflow may not normally use. (P.S. - I don't have a currently working printer so if your questions involve printing, I'm afraid I won't be any help at the present time.

Please note there is a 30 day money back offer. It's a full featured trial. Nothing that is disabled. It's only that if you have not purchased it within 30 days, it stops working. Current sale at the website is half off for $22.98 if you miss the BDJ deal.

If the vendor had not been able to find my old registration info, I would have paid the current BDJ price again, as i remember really enjoying the program years ago.

Malwarebytes did give me some trouble. It complained, but I looked deeper and at Virus Scan results. (Before and After installing.) I'm satisfied there is no real problem.
