Gridleak I like the idea of all my collections of media in one program. This is why I ask.

One use is in my book library. My current book catalog, when scanning the bar code of the book, it goes online and retrieves all the info of that book, saving me the trouble of having to type all that info down.

I have another collection where I have created my own bar codes to identify each item I have. So, a scanner would be handy for me there as well.

A User Installed OK on Windows XP(SP3) 32bit.
But get error message on launching
"Missing fie : \WINDOWS\SysWOW64\macomctl.ocx
Repeat the installation program".

Nunya User I like the way this developer has answered every question put to them. Very impressive. I didn't expect to have one, but I have a question.

When I ran the setup exe, Windows refused to run it saying:

"Windows Defender SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk.

App: ModusDoc Standard v7.2.310.exe
Publisher: Unknown publisher"

I didn't just recently turn on this feature of Windows. I've used it for years. I've also installed a LOT of software with this feature enabled. However, this is the first time in my experience that Windows has refused to install software.

Do you have any idea why this happened? Thanks for your help.

RichU nunya, You can bypass that Windows screen. There is a very small link right below, and if you click on the link it expands and gives you an option to allow the program to run. Sorry, I don't remember specifically what it says, but if you look, you will find it.

RichU I don't know... But that window pops up from time to time on installs and the link is kind of obscure. For anyone else, the link is "more info" and then something like "run anyway"

Nunya User Richu, I was hoping to hear from the developer about this. Are you associated with them or BitsDuJour or just a user, like the rest of us?

You're right about the "More info" and "Run anyway" options. As I said, I've had the Smartscreen feature turned on for years on multiple computers and have installed 100s of programs, but this is the first time I've seen that error message.

bsr007 I am trialling the Portable version of ModusDoc and I am finding it very good. The only issue I have found is when I start the software I get the error message: Component 'mscomctl.ocx' not correctly registered: file is missing or invalid. Fix this error? I then click yes and a Windows dialog appears asking if I want to run the software.This routine happens every time.I would be grateful if the developer could give some advice on overcoming this.

I just installed this giveaway, and received no error messages.
Perhaps your AntiVirus should be disabled during your install, as it may have prevented the installer accessing some system folder ?
I have Avast Free. I did not have to disable that.

PS I have long hungered for a program that can Bookmark my folders/files
If I ever find an ideal program, to do that, it will cure me of my nasty habit of keeping folders open in my file manager, hoping they(the Tabs to folders) will still be there when I next open the file manager. Quite a few times that nasty habit does not work, and the file manager's memory of the open Tabs is lost.
I am hoping today's giveaway can be used as a Bookmark Manager

I have Win XP Pro SP3 32bit
I created 2 Groups, and got the error when I tried to delete one of them.

I have been a VB6 programmer for 20 years (as a hobby since I retired).
I prefer to avoid dependencies, and I especially avoid all of Microsoft's dependencies, as MS does not know how to avoid version clashes/problems.
The ocx in question is one of those, and I have never incorporated that into any of my VB6 programs, so as to avoid errors like we both just received.

bsr007 Hi Everyone, I purchased the Portable version of ModusDoc. Thanks to all who commented on the error message I am receiving when I start the program. Unfortunately I am still getting the error on startup regarding the mscomctl.ocx after rebooting my computer and this file is present in the Windows\SysWOW64 folder. Any other ideas would be much appreciated.

Valery bsr007, For windows 10 x64: look for cmd.exe in \ SysWOW64, right-click - select run from administrator, enter REGSVR32 MSCOMCTL.OCX

Or try running ModusDoc as administrator.

Valery Nunya User, I need to get a formal certificate and pay an annual fee. I have not done this yet.
I also understand that Windows Defender SmartScreen in fact does not guarantee anything, only creates inconvenience for users.

Nunya User Thanks for getting back to me. I take that to mean the certificate would eliminate the problem I'm experiencing with Smartscreen.

I understand that everyone has a different experience with software because their machines are configured differently. Each person's PC configuration is probably unique from any other, due to the 1000s, if not millions of possibilities.

However, I have not found what you said to be the case with Windows Defender. It has worked quite well protecting my system from malware, such as trojans and other dark stuff found in almost every corner of the Internet. But, I will read up on Smartscreen to make sure it's what I need.

Valery I agree with you. My Smartscreen is also enabled. I wanted to say that Smartscreen is not a panacea for all problems. It is hard for a user to start a program when he trusts it, but Smartscreen is not. Need to do the whole procedure. I think it would be enough to show the two buttons "Yes" and "No".

Valery Charles Beauchamp, Works on all versions of Windows 2000-10, Server 2000-2016. It should work for 2019 (not yet tested).
The main license is Server + 2 clients. For other clients - you need to buy additional licenses.

Valery There are no such functions in the program. ModusDoc allows you to insert (not link) files to the ModusDoc database and no longer store these files elsewhere.

Here's the results of a quick test of ModusDoc's search capability that I didn't have before..

On my PC I have book-related documents in two individual folders (that is, one folder is not a subfolder of the other folder).

In XYplorer (a replacement for Windows 10 file explorer) I can search for typ in either folder and get results for documents containing either type or typography.

But in ModusDoc I can add hyperlinks to documents from both folders into one group, so I can search for typ and get a list of all relevant documents located in both folders. Nice!

I bought the Standard version. I'm on Windows 10. When installing I saw the "Windows Defender SmartScreen . . ." message, which I have seen with other software from small companies (or from individuals). I clicked for more information and said install anyway (I have Bitdefender security software so I
wasn't concerned.).

HJ User There is a free program, called "Everything". It will catalog all files on all drives connected to your computer, as well as networked drives, if you wish. Finding files by name or type is instantaneous. Searches and listings can be of the entire database or of any drive or folder. Search or listing results can be exported to a text, excel or otherwise delimited text file. In the instantaneous mode, Everything does not search the content of documents. It has that capability but for that it is slow, since it does not maintain an index of file contents. From everything you can delete, copy, move or open any file in the instantaneous listing, just as you could if you were looking directly at the file on your computer. Searches can be quite complex and you can save sets of search parameters, so that, for example, if you have reason to find files have the name Smith John, you can just click the bookmark related to that and it will bring up all documents that fit that parameter.

It is not my purpose to promote Everything, but to find document management software that can provide additional functionality.

What can any version of Modusdoc do that is not done by Everything? Does it have the ability to do a meta-data search or modification? (Everything does not have that capability).

Valery ModusDoc can scan discs. But the program was created for else, for adding metadata to files (up to 250 for each file) and additional possibilities of organizing, modifying and searching, including by metadata.

Dan P I just purchased the portable version of ModusDoc. At startup ModusDoc always says "mscomctl.ocx" not correctly registered and asks to "Fix this error". I respond "Yes" and the app runs. At every subsequent startup ModusDoc asks me the same thing.

I have gone in as System Administrator and registered "mscomctl.ocx" but I am still asked the same thing at ModusDoc startup. Any suggestions?

Colin McAllister Hi.
I have (desktop) version of ModusDoc 7.2. Does 7.4 still copy every file into a ModusDoc database (i.e. create a copy of the file), unless you simply bind/set a link to the file on your pc? I have avery large number of documents, music files and photos, and I don't want to double up the disc space being used. Thanks.

Also, one of the reasons I stopped using version 7.2, was that I have the very same error message problem as Dan P. If I kill the message, ModusDoc opens, but I'd prefer not to see the message every time the program opens.

Kelly Hamblin I get a different error, depending on how I open the application. When I use my program launcher, I get this message:
Missing file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64\config.fpw
C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64\md42.dll
and Modus Doc doesn't open. If I track the .exe file down in explorer and open it from there, the program opens without popping up a message.

brenda adams I did a search online and see nothing but complaints. I'm wondering if this program is ready for the public. I also wonder how the program RightNotes, the I own, compares feature-wise. I have only stored things in mine, and have not yet explored all its uses, but I suspect it does much of the same and perhaps more. Not sure. I know it can even automatically load in from Evernote and etc. Does links to files. I don't see why it could not do similar in most ways. But anyway, after reading the negatives (even on the Give-Away website where one complainer mentioned awful slowness of the program) I'm passing on this current offering. Sorry.

Perhaps you should give your program to a selected group of testers. I would like to see some good reviews. Perhaps there are some to be viewed somewhere? I can't find any. Please extend your offer and point us to some solid reviews. I would like to see some that address speed of program once installed and performance on Win10. I hope all these negatives that seem to be everywhere can be disproven. (That's why I think a group comprised of users of your program might be in order.) I realize that this negative stuff must be very discouraging to you and your fellow developers. Many of us users of software, I'm sure, would be happy to help. I know that many of us who purchase from Bits often are very much liking great, useful programs (especially when priced to a level that most of us can purchase). Good luck to you. I think action of some kind is needed on your part to fix all this. I would love to hear from some very happy users.

RightNote is a note organizer, ModusDoc - Systematization and cataloging of any information.
«awful slowness», I remember someone wrote. But this is about scanning discs! This is an auxiliary function in the program! Besides, I do not know a program that does this much faster. If you want to scan disks every hour, then you need a specialized program.

HJ User 1. BDJ usually provides a link to download the program. There is none here. However, if one goes to the Modusdoc website, test versions of the various versions can be downloaded.

2. Is there a pdf manual for this program?

3. The concept seems to be a very good one. There ought to be a clear explanation of the different options for recording the file and folder information.

4. I assumed that if I dragged folder to the app window, the program would list the contents of the folder. However, I find it only lists the folder. Clicking on the folder opens it within windows. I want a listing of the contents. There is a way that a folder or disk can be "scanned", thereby bringing in the individual files; however, they are assigned to a group that bears the folder name. I want to be able to "scan" into an existing group.

5. I listed a hundred documents to the app window, by dragging the files to the window. I then exported the documents to a csv file. One of the columns in the csv file, created by the app, is "date". The date is not the actual date of the file. It is the date that the files was listed to the app (all April 1). That is no help to me. It is often important to be able to list files in chronological order. Is there a way to get the actual file date recorded?

6. The program gives the opportunity to make a note as to listed files. That is great!

7. Does the network version include standard and cloud capabilities?

8. It is sometimes the case that a file is relevant to more than one category. It would be helpful if one could right click on a file entry, within the app, and there would a appear of the different categories (groups), so that the file can also be assigned to one or more of those groups.

Lee H Please clarify the differences between The desktop, portable, and cloud versions of software. The Fineprint indicates the desktop version can only be installed on one computer. Obviously the DB is stored on that computer.

I assume the portable version will allow the program to run on any desktop or laptop I own. I assume the data for each computer will be stored locally on that computer.

And if I am correct, the cloud version will allow access to any of my computers storing all of the data in the cloud. And that would allow e to access and see the data on each of my computers.

APK It is just what I was looking for. So I will buy it.
Question. I should appreciate that, when I click on (eventually with a right click) filename and select it, it will open an 'open file menu etc.' or just open the file with the default program.
For example: Clicking on 123.xlsx will open the file with Excel.
More user friendly than moving to the icons on the right side. Icons which I think could also be a bit larger.

APK Answer to Valery. First I tried the trial software. Now I think it was not the software which was the problem. I bought 2 versions and am now really happy with it. The price is ridiculously low!
Lesley Wells has a complaint over your website, I have only one problem.
Depending on the width of the webpage, the Awards Pixtures are covering the ModusDoc texts (Download/Buy etc.) in the middle of the page (both Firefox and Chrome). I have to pull the right side of the webpage window quite a bit to the right to see the information completely.

& Cloud Version

What was on the website didn't have detail and there were no video showing how they worked.

1.) where do the two different versions run?
2.) files stored in what files sites can they index and access?
3.) where are the indexes kept for both version?
4.) how are the files accessed when in cloud?

Is there better use scenario for the cloud version that would make it more useful for some users?

Valery Khalil, Cloud version works with database (and is installed) in the cloud, while Standard version works with database (and is installed) on local disk. Other than that, the versions are identical.
Cloud version advantage:
1) the user can work with the program from the cloud on any of his computers.
2) one license - any number of user computers
3) the cloud is responsible for the safety of data.

Is it able to catalog files in any online storage providers like Google Drive?

Also, can the standard edition catalog online drives if they are mounted as local drives?

Valery Khalil, Dropbox, Google Drive and similar. Any folders and drives (in theory). The size determines the volume of your database, I have less than 100 Mb.
I thought that the information on the main page is enough. Now I'll think again.

HJ B I do not find the product description here, or on the modusdoc webpage, to be sufficiently clear as to its capabilities. There is not trial version. There is no refund. As a result one purchases this in the blind.

1. Let's assume I have a number of clients, and wish to assign links in the database according to client. That might include documents, weblinks, portions of documents etc. In some cases the same link may be applicable to two or more clients. Does this program have that capability?

2. In some places, it is indicated that the program is licensed on a per computer basis. I have four computer at which I want all of the same material available. There is a note made that seems to say that the cloud feature permits one purchase to allow the data to be available to multiple computers. Do I have to install the program on each of four computers, but only have to pay the one cloud version charge?

3. A variation of item 2. Does one purchase of the network version permit the program to function on all of the computers on the network? So, do 10 people on the network have full and simultaneous access to read, add and modify the data?

Without actually seeing the program in action, I have to assume other questions will arise once the program is used.

Felix User Does ModusDoc copy every file into a ModusDoc database (i.e. create a copy of the file) or simply points/bind/set a link to points to the file on your pc?
If copy each file then double up the disc space being used!
What happens if the file is deleted/replaced?

Valery Felix, both options are possible. If the file is copied to the database, then it is suggested to delete the file from the disk. If you create link to the file and then delete the file, the link will not work.

Adi Abir I bought the software. Got a confirmation letter with a download link. Tried to download but nothing happened. Tried again with no results. Finally, I tried downloading from the BitsDuJour page and got an error message saying "too many downloads: This promotion has been downloaded too many times from this link.
You can get this download by making a purchase from this page."

Obviously, the download link doesn't work. How can I download my software?

Adi Abir Tried to run it. Doesn't work. I input in English but it displays Russian.
The Program froze and I had to use the program manager to oust it.

Needs a lot more debugging and testing before trying to sell it..

HJ B 1. In response to a question, you say: "Bvssunnydale, Each document (file) can contain up to 250 metadata." Does this program provide a way to add metadata to files? For example, if I have a folder relating to 2021 or to Jones, can the program insert 2021 or Jones as metadata in each file?

2. Are there files types that the program does not catalog? I notice that you do not mention pdfs.

3. Are there file types for which the program cannot catalog metadata?

4. It is not clear whether this program catalogs the content of files. For example, if all of my files have been cataloged by the database, can I search for all files that contain the word "Jumbo" or the phrase "reasonable doubt"? Or does it only catalog the file properties?

5. Can the results of a search be printed?

2. Theoretically, no. There are no problems with PDF.
3. Metadata is not extracted from files (except for name and path)
4. There is no search for the contents of files. You can search by fields (metadata)
5. There is no printing directly. Can exported to excel, for example.

In other words. Each record in the database associated with a document (file) can contain up to 250 fields (metadata). Fields (metadata) are formed by the user. Metadata recorded in the file itself can be viewed by executing the command menu Properties of File….

CFGuy @ModusDoc - Interesting program at very reasonable price point. If I store the main database on a networked drive, am I able to purchase one "ModusDoc Network" and then "ModusDoc Standard" for each client PC, or would I need to purchase "ModusDoc Network" for all PCs using the networked database edition? Valery CFGuy, One ModusDoc Network license allows you to install the program on the server (or administrator workstation) and 2 workstations. If you have more users, you can buy additional licenses, but without discount ($17.10) on the program website.

Valery Stephen Warkentien, No. The structure of the records in the file must correspond to the structure of the ModusDoc database. This is practically impossible. Therefore, this function is missing in the program.

Richard Blake Are there differences in the structure of a database created (or used) by single user, network and cloud databases? For example, can I move a database created by a single-user ModusDoc to a network server and then use it in multiuser mode by clients from the network version? Can I open a database created by (or that has been used by) the network edition with a single-user ModusDoc (but with the restriction that it is opened exclusively for that instance, and is inaccessible by users of the network edition?
Notes for 7.0.286 say Installing the network version program on the server is now optional. You can administer databases from a workstation. Is that still true? Does it mean that network client can be installed on workstations instead of on the server?

Valery Richard Blake, Yes, you can move databases between different versions of the program.
If you have moved the database, it will only be opened by this program.
You can manage databases from a workstation.

2. If a laptop is connected to the network and creates one or more modus databases of documents on the laptop, is that data still available to the laptop when it is away from the network?

3. Do all of the computers on the network have access to all of the modus databases, regardless of what other computer created a given database?

4. If the server (or the administrator's computer) goes down, what if any access to the program or to the databases do the other computers have?

5. Can any database, regardless of which computer creates it, be copied to or moved to any other computer on the network?

2. The network database is not accessible to computers outside the network.
