What are people saying about Mybase Desktop 8.x

Keith Anderson I have a couple of questions.

When is the next major release coming out?

Will it be a free upgrade if we buy now?

Are you going to be around for awhile?
There are only 29 post in the last year on the yahoo forums.
Don't really want to spend the money on an app that is just
limping along. There other ones to choose from if that is the
case.

Thanks.

wjjsoft support 1. We've been busy with version 6 for a couple of months, and will come up with the newer version in next few months if all goes OK. For the roadmap or major feature list of the v6, please visit this webpage: http://www.wjjsoft.com/my...chitecture

2. We offer for one year free upgrade to major releases. For detailed info about upgrade policies, please visit this webpage: http://www.wjjsoft.com/upgrade.html

3. In the past years, we found that each users usually have their own unique ways using myBase. The yahoo group attracted hundreds of users, but all the users have very different questions each other, and the group is not active. For quick reference, We've tried to list all the common questions on the FAQ page: http://www.wjjsoft.com/faq.html . Glen Coulthard I have the same concerns as Keith, but would feel a whole lot better if wjjsoft provided their own Support Forums, as do MyNotesKeeper, MyInfo, InfoQube/SQLNotes, and most other software companies.

Potential users/purchasers want to know that the software is being actively supported and developed. -- Glen

Stephen Cohen I've been using myBase for years. It copies almost all Web pages exactly and very fast using the WebCollect plug-in.. An ocassional one won't copy. The 2-pane interface has a tree on the left and a panel on the right with two tabs: One displays a copied Web page (or whatever part you saved); the other provides a clean slate for pasting in or composing rtf documents.

Be sure to check out the menus and toolbar icons. There is a lot of powerful functionality there. One can create a number of types of links...a little practice in trying them out will be rewarded.

My support questions are always answered within a couple of days.

John Smith Years ago I had an earlier version of MYBase. It worked great and I liked it for years. Then the old computer operating system became corrupt and I reformatted and reinstalled the operating system and needed to reinstall all software. I went to install the mybase program and the license was not accepted. I emailed wjsoft about it and they responded by saying that the version I had was outdated and expired. They told me I could pay to upgrade to the latest version. I got pissed and bought Ask Sam instead.

Martin Joel Hi, What is your licensing policy? I have a home PC, a home laptop and a work laptop, all used solely by me. Will the license cover all three? (Only one will be used by me at any one time)

Glen Coulthard What exactly is included in the Addons Pack? I notice on your website that some items are called "addons" while others are called "plugins" -- is there a single download for the "addons pack?"
Jun 12 2009 at 4:11am Copy Link
0
wjjsoft support For convenience of documentation, some utilities (e.g. nyfex.dll, htmltree.dll, nyfjs.dll, etc.) required to work with myBase main program are called 'plug-ins', some other separate utilities: standalone programs (e.g. Viewer, Mobile version), or extensions to 3rd-party applications (e.g. WebCollect, GDS, CGI) are distinguishingly called 'add-ons'. When one buy the add-ons pack, it includes both add-ons and plug-ins, and we'll send a unique license key which is used to unlock the add-ons/plug-ins if needed. For a simple list of existing add-ons/plug-ins, please check this webpages:
http://www.wjjsoft.com/my...ml#plugins
http://www.wjjsoft.com/my...tml#addons
http://www.wjjsoft.com/my...chitecture
In order to download the add-ons/plug-ins, please visit our download site: http://www.wjjsoft.com/download.html . Most of downloaded packs include the 'Readme' file and setup instructions.

TJ I've been using myBase for years and it does seem to be getting a little stale with other programs offering the same functionality or better. I'd like to see a phpBB forum setup for myBase with a feature list for version 6. I would think creating a lot of buzz for the next new version would be very beneficial to lure users to the product.

Thanks

Rick Przebienda Buyer's Remorse .... I bought myBase and started using it and last night I got one of the CNET Windows Download emails about new software and that led to a search on PIMs. Seems to me a lot of PIMs exist out there with similar or better functionality for a cheaper price. I will with hold product names, but go and look for yourself. The point I want to emphasise is that the myBase product is very solid but its feature set is starting to get old. The lack of information for a new release and when to expect it, is a bit of a smokescreen, no user forums, etc indicate this is a dying program so maybe you would be better off looking around a bit more before you buy. I know I should have, but I will make the best of the situation.

Keith Anderson From the last offering in Jun 2009........

When is the next major release coming out?
"We've been busy with version 6 for a couple of months, and will come up with the newer version in next few months if all goes OK."

Will it be a free upgrade if we buy now?
"We offer for one year free upgrade to major releases. "

Well, it's been 7 months since I bought the software but haven't seen version 6 yet. If my "one year free upgrade" expires before version 6 finally gets released, will that "one year" get extended?
My purchase was based on the "few months" statement.
I'm sure other people are concerned about this and may also want to know before buying this time.

Thanks

Glen Coulthard As with Keith, I purchased the software during the last BDJ offering and I am still waiting for "new" version that was promised. Although I have heard "they are working on it," the wjjsoft website does not offer a forum to discuss ideas/suggestions with other users or the developer. The website hasn't been updated for some time and I wonder about the continued development of this product.

wjjsoft support We hope the software can really help. The upcoming version 6 is a rewrite and has an improved infrastructure for full unicode support and extending functionality. It takes some more time than we initially estimated. We'll try to make it available in next three months. In case it's postponed the 'one year free upgrade' for BDJ gets extended accordingly.

wjjsoft support On 64-bit Windows 7, the 32-bit ienyf.dll may have problems registering into IE, so the inplace web-browsing in myBase 5.x may not work. We'll try to solve the problem in the upcoming version 6.

Keith Russell How about 64-bit Vista? Does it have the same problem with ienyf.dll as 64-bit Windows 7? How would I test on my installation to see if the inplace web-browsing is working? I've done some searching the help but have not found anything yet, and I don't have a lot of time before the offer expires.

Bob McLain I've been testing the software for about an hour and like it very much except for two deal-breaking (for me) problems:

1) When you export a database as a text file, any 'child' nodes on the tree seem to be ignored.

2) When you change the background of the edit space to black and the foreground (text) to white, and then export the files as RTF, the background reverts to white - making the invisible! This same behavior occurs with the HTML tree plug-in. I've even tried changing the plug-ins CSS to specify black bg/white fg, but the result is STILL a white bg and invisible text.

I can't believe that these two problems have persisted in such a mature application. Can anyone else duplicate my results or else confirm that I'm an idiot who can't change a background color?

wjjsoft support It may have the same problem with 64-bit Vista. The next version 6 uses a different method for browsing stored web content.
Wjj Software - Jan 25 2010 at 5:47pm Copy Link
0
wjjsoft support In order to export content into a text file, please try to first print the selected info item (including child items) into the 'preview' window, whereby you can preview/adjust the results, and then save the results into a specified text/RTF file. To print info items, please select the 'File - Print notes...' menu item.

The RichEdit control's background color will not be saved into RTF text. If you'd like the text to have specific black background, please try changing its background color, by selecting the 'Format - Background color' menu item, instead of that in the 'options - edit - background'.

The html tree export is some more flexible than RTF format. Registered users are entitled to request if needed the html tree template source files, which allows to adjust the page layout or adjust the text formatting by directly editing the HTML/CSS source files.

Warren Russell Not knowing the offer would be extended, I crossed my fingers and registered, even though my question about Vista 64-bit compatibility hadn't been answered. FWIW, everything seems to be working fine, as far as I can tell.

I do have a couple dumb questions, though. Where can I find a list of what's included in the addon pack? I've searched everywhere and can't find anything that says. Apparently, if I download and install myBase from the downloads page, the addon pack doesn't get installed. At least, I had to download and install the WebCollect and HtmlTreee addons separately.

Does the addon pack include just the addons on the download page? Are other addons or plugins available? Are any included in the trial download? I didn't receive a download link in my registration email, so apparently the trial version and registered versions are the same.

During the beta test period, we're trying to eliminate all known bugs/issues and make it stable. In addition, there're some new interesting features/options important to have in the final v6.0, such as more JS APIs, more utilities, e.g. WebCollect for Google Chrome, Exporting to MS Word with outline etc.

I'm already a registered user of Version 5 desktop. Will there also be a discount for the upgrade to the upcoming Version 6.

If not will the normal upgrade price to V6 desktop remain $29 or will it raise with the release of V6?

MK Good grief. To those incapable of using their initiative, instead of asking about how the software works, download it and follow the tutorial that comes with it. It took me 5 minutes to go through it and understand it. That challenge shouldn't scare you.

Having had a number of outliner type progs, and still a heavy user of TreePad X Enterprise, the symbolic linking which myBase offers is very interesting. It allows you to create a number of notes, and then compose these "virtual notes" into different outlines, without copying the existing notes. You can then print off the composed "story". TreePad just allows you to hyperlink out to other notes, not re-use the same notes in different outline structures (without copying them first). I can see that having great potential.

Software Guy Just started using this information organizer and it looks to be full featured. For my needs, the features coming in version 6 are a very necessary addition. Looks to be very useful for people who handle large amounts of data - scientists, engineers, researchers, writers. Could be good for college students though most use PIMS like student dog or any of the many others that are more heavily biased toward reminder/to do lists.

Information managers come in all sizes - from sticky notes (some with reminders alarms) to online to do lists to PIMs (personal information managers) to tree note organizers (tree notes, allmynotes) to database information managers like this offered today. MyBase Desktop is is a nicely featured database information manager suitable for heavy duty use and relatively complex needs. Find a good overview for this program here http://www.wjjsoft.com/mybase_docs.html.

For lighter or more specific needs I suggest a lighter info manager as the learning curve is easier. But for those that handle large amounts of different but related information - like researchers or students with term or research papers - this looks to be a useful information manager.

Preston Mitchell Thank You WjjSoft...BUT a QUICK ANSWER PLEASE.

WjjSoft does offer an abundance of Help Resources...just wasn't easy to find such on your web site...so thank you for providing the help links.

I MUST MAKE DECISION TODAY about MyBase...so please tell me ASAP if myBase offers a critical function for my database needs.

The PREDICAMENT: I must perform extensive Internet research swiftly. So, when I find a relevant web page, I tend to save a shortcut to the web page on my desktop (via IE9 - File - Send - Shortcut to Desktop). After my internet research is done, I open the shortcuts, review the page, and save any useful info. But after a round of fast intensive research, my desktop is cluttered mess of shortcuts...and finding the best 'shortcut' sources can be a tedious, time-consuming chore.

MY QUESTION IS: I see that myBase can save an entire web pages and organize them in an 'html-tree' structures. BUT CAN myBase help to save just web page shortcuts on the fly? Help me to save AND CATEGORIZE only shortcuts?

Perhaps my question is naive...and I simply overlooked the obvious...but sorry...your software is not of the kind where an user can install and intuitively figure out in 10 minutes...there is a learning curve.

Thank you again,
Preston

Preston Mitchell OPEN LETTER to Wjj Software

Of the several database programs available, I feel MyBase is the most innovative. Its overall concept strikes me as brilliant.

I believe MyBase addresses a tremendous need for an effective ‘personal’ database program. (Another software listing on Bits perfectly illustrates that need. See Hm Document Manager at http://www.bitsdujour.com...t-manager/).

SADLY, I think Wjj is missing a great opportunity to broaden its market by missing the mark in several key areas: Specifically, by not correcting some easily fixable shortcomings (see my CNET review); by not adding a few essential features needed in a modern database program (ie. direct scanning capability, PDF importation, etc); by not making MyBase a little more user friendly for the ordinary home user; and by not being fully responsive to user feedback.

Again, MyBase offers the best database system. But I wager that inferior database programs will achieve greater marketing success. Again, Hm Doc Mngr (HDM) on Bits is an excellent example of what I mean.

HDM is just a reinvention of PaperPort’s pseudo-database system. Yet, HDM is quick to embrace the best features of its competitor products. Also, HDM is highly responsive to feedback on how to make its program better. Compare the postings in your Bits column versus those in HDM…and then ask yourself who is the better marketer? Which company excited more interest in their software? Since 1984, I have seen too many instances of superior technology lose out to superior marketing—that is tragic!

AS FOR ME…
I spent most of Sunday thoroughly studying your program (thereby answering many of my own naïve questions posted initially). Additionally, I discovered many of MyBase’s amazing & unique features. But I won’t keep MyBase.

As much as MyBase impresses me, I can’t live with its unnecessary shortcomings. Also, it is frustrating to see several great features castrated by a ridiculous deficiency. (If your competitors can improve their software by adopting the best features of other programs, why can’t MyBase improve its own best features?)

I look forward to the release of MyBase version 6, hoping that it remedies version 5.5’s ‘inadequacies ‘.

Lastly, Wjj, thank you for the chance to try MyBase.
And please offer Version 6 on Bits at first opportunity.

Preston Mitchell Hm Doc Manager vs. myBase

I would say that Hm Doc Manager's database management system pales in comparison to myBase.

My point, however, was that HDM does a much better job of marketing to the home user by wrapping a sow's ear in silk (ie. a modern user-friendly interface) and by responding quickly to user feedback for improvements & new features. But in the end, whereas MyBase is a real database, HMD is merely a rehash of the PaperPort pseudo-database. Even so, major shortcomings in a few essential functions prevent me from employing MyBase.

Preston Mitchell Dear PC User -- Re: Other Competing Software

PaperPort 12 by Nuance (reknown for Dragon Naturally Speaking)
eDocXL by AvanQuest
Hm Doc Mnger by Dokix

All three of the above use what I call the 'psuedo-database' system--PIM with a lite database. Most 'personal' database software seem to use a variation of that system. The three named above are the best in their 'class'. But as a genuine personal database, none equal MyBase. (BTW, if u want a great database for ONLY Word documents, try Outliner for Word, recently offered on Bits. It is a true personal DB.)

PAPERPORT is the original: its predecessor--Pagis--invented the 'PIM with lite DB' system. The others basically imitate PaperPort: HDM strips out PP's many superfluous features. And eDocXL attempts to outdo PaperPort with even more bells & whistles. In any event, I chose PP...because the original is still the best.

The strength of the PaperPort 'style' is the management of DIRECT scanned documents. PaperPort's OCR technology is exceptional (and also sold as OminPage). Also, PaperPort incorporates its own PDF creator, which is probably the very best alternative to Acrobat. But as a personal database, PaperPort and its clones all leave a lot to be desired.

UNFORTUNATELY, all three offer a database that is essentially an enhanced version of Windows Explorer joined with an exclusive 'My Documents' type of directory. Big deal.

As far as a true personal database goes, MyBase would be the ticket...except for its many ridiculous deficiencies....which makes it a great concept foiled by a flawed excecution of certain key features.

Sadly, MyBase and PaperPort have something extraordinary in common. Both started in the 1990's. BOTH were poised to become the Big Leaders in their software segment. And both blew their chances thru poor excecution of the details and lousy marketing.

IN FACT, PaperPort (as Pagis) SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE 'ACROBAT'. In the 1990s, Pagis came with its own version of an Acrobat-type program that was nothing short of an technological wonder. Unfortunately, it did not occur to the developer to offer a free reader, like Adobe did....so Adobe's better marketing beat out a competitor's superior technology. (And I think MyBase is another good example of such.)

(Although I have PP installed, I prefer to use the old Pagis installed in XP mode of my Win 7 Pro....because Pagis includes an Acrobat type of program whose advanced editing features still exceeds even the current Acrobat X. PP's PDF Creator axed the old Pagis adv editing features.)

Hope you enjoyed your history lesson. :-)

Roberto great review.

i cant make a good review because im not fluent in english, but i bought some outliners too.

smereka treeprojects: a very lightweight outliner. Really fast. Can index pdf documents too. Maybe his stronger point is that can keep revisions of the documents. Has a free or lite version, but the paid one is cheap and developer give us frecuent updates.

action outline: this was my very first tree organizer. dont let to attach pdf files, only "rich" text formating nodes.

ultra recall pro: this is a big horse, i really like it. I think is not the best tool to capture webpages, but his flexibility make this app a winner. Full featured.

personal brain: this is another big one.. and when i say big, i mean big in features and ... "slower". Can index pdf files, and they are searchable in a nice way. Its not a tipical outliner, this is the only one that i still not buy.. maybe waiting for the next version and trying to keep money (expensive).

K X i'd put Paperport and Home Document Manager in the same category, but I think myBase is much more similar to Ultra Recall than it is to PaperPort or HDM. (i'm not familar with eDocXL.)

MK I have to agree with KX.
Preston seems to be confusing home document management systems with outliner personal information management (PIM) systems.
myBase is an outliner type PIM (like TreePad, Ultra Recall, Crystal Office's Maple, even MS OneNote) where you type up or copy & paste information into notes and then evolve a structure from the notes.
Paperport, etc., are scan, file, search, retrieve type programs.
Different beasties.

Patrick Yancey I second the comments made by R A. This isn't the first time Microsoft has tried to push changes on the user community, simply because they spent a lot of time and R&D dollars in researching a better way. Does anyone remember "BOB". When Microsoft realized they couldn't sell it (i.e. no one wanted Bob), they simply added components from it to Office (anyone remember the annoying "Office assistant" characters).

If you don't remember any of these, don't fret. They were short lived and huge failures. The ribbon is not more intuitive and I find it hard to believe that it makes anyone more productive. My opinion: the myBase interface is just fine.

wjjsoft support HI bvssunnydale, myBase 6.x provides a number of import/export relevant utilities (on the 'Capture/Share.' menu), that help import/export data from/in various data formats. When you've exported your data from other programs in the TXT/RTF/HTML... formats, you can try importing them by selecting the 'Capture - Import files as child items' menu item. If the source data is structured as a directory tree, select the 'Import directory tree' menu item, that will import the tree structure as well as file contents. Dragging-and-dropping, Copying-Pasting can be another option.

R A MyBase is a great program, however its development has been snail-pace slow. Its menu is quirky and odd- I recommended to the developers that they change the menu to a more intuitive menu like so many other note-apps. Also, the last incarnation of 6.0 that I tried did not offer very common features such as formatting of text in the trees, or drag and drop of node-items in the tree. Additionally, the application needs a user forum- a place where users can discuss problems and help one another.

Don't get me wrong- its a great program. But a few crucial improvements would make it far better.

What I especially like about myBase is how it indexes my PDF, DOCX, and other attachments for searching and retrieval. I've added my entire library of over 1,000 PDF articles to a myBase database and it still responds very nicely.

P. Molinar Thank you for your response, but thats not really the data management I am looking for.

I mean if you write source code or if you write larger texts, you want to have parts of it folded away temporarily to get the overview. Cutting it apart is no solution for that.
This kind of Text-management in the editor is important and I believe not only for me.
I am a bit sad you do not consider this need.
Although the other products - Inspiration and Surfulater - do not have the database capability your software have, they however already tried to solve this need in their own way.

R A I love myBase, and used to use it regularly. But its missing quite a few basic features - spell check, formatting for tree items, drag-and-drop, weird menus, lack of the above-mentioned folding feature, cannot seem to import documents in folder-structures on the harddrive and maintain this folder structure in myBase. I eventually began using another app because these concerns remained unchanged.

But myBase's webclipper is outstanding, fast and accurate. And its exceptionally well-programmed- its only 2 megs yet contains SO many features? I recall when I switched from OneOne, I was stunned. Steven Avery Hi,

myBase was given a good nod in the major Donationcoder survey of note-related programs.

And I have always been a bit skeptical, since without a forum (a Yahoogroups forum has little activity) and slow enhancement, you do not feel that much a part of the project. Yet if the product is very good, and being updated and enhanced for a decade or so, a slow and steady pace is acceptable.

So I just did the install and only looked at the demo. It definitely has a lot of pizazz and some of the critiques (no RTF on the left tree) are a bit minor. Maybe the programming tools being used make it a bit harder than you would think, each program has a different skill and tool base.

RightNote is the alternative that I have been awaiting a hopeful Bits discount, but myBase clearly has some features beyond .. just about anybody.

It looks like you can make a nice spread and distribute it, one that has real net-style help features. (I have not tried the web-in stuff yet.) So if I design a little research project, the viewer allows me to distribute to other researchers for their viewing. Right ? This can be a big plus. Maybe if they have the actual version we can work out collaboration, a whole nother issue.

Another one I tried was InfoQube, (formerly SQLNotes) lots of promise, some difficulties and really very different.

While RightNote is more the classical note (Treepad, Keynote, etc.) with extra pizazz in features. I could see both Rightnote and myBase in the long run. Note: there are a number of RightNote type programs, I do not mean to slight any, some are excellent. RightNote adds features like tables and spreadsheets, but it does not have the pizazz of potential of MyBase.

So MyBase straddles the traditional notes -- with pizazz, some database and PIM features (always a question whether they are implemented strong enough in an integrated product), and a publishing/viewing strength. All I have to find is one good solid research or personal use and it will be a good investment.

I'm almost sold.

Ok, and needing a good solid web clipper (especially for pages from forums that are lost on forum cleanups) , and that being another strength, I'll take the plunge and work out the details later. zzzz

Tab strengths are kewl. When I opened a second database it was opened in a tab, not kicking out the current one. Nice. Also tabs on the left (calendar etc) .. also internally on some if the windows. All rather slick. Like real programming !

barney Barnes I bought myBase 5.5 in August, 2011. Had a few problems with it, some of 'em critical. Emailed Wjjsoft about those problems along with a few suggestions in October, 2011.

Their response was that my problems *might* be resolved if I upgraded to the new version 6.02. I tried that. Wouldn't register, of course.

Answer to the dilemma? Buy a new license. I chose a different answer: I deleted the product. No real support, no free upgrade - c'mon, two (2) months? - of course, and no use to me. I switched to myInfo.

wjjsoft support Dear Barney Barnes,

Thank you for your comments.

Just searched the tech-support system. If I'm not wrong, your question was related to an issue capturing a web page with webcollect addon for Firefox, the error message was 'TypeError: aCSS is null'. As we just posted a new revision of webcollect addon which includes a fix to the issue at that time, so we kindly suggested that you try the new version and see if it can resolve the issue.

As a matter of fact, contents on the web are compiled in many different ways, some of them contain complicated javascript or other trick, webcollect will not capture every webpage exactly, we tried to keep improving it for years though. So we also suggest that you first highlight a part of the webpage and then capture the portion with webcollect addon.

Regarding the upgrade policy, we offer one year for free upgrade to the major release since previous order date, so you don't need to pay for the v6.x upgrade. For detailed info about the upgrade policy, please visit this webpage:

What is your advantage over the free AllMyNotes or the expensive InfoSelect which both offer very similar functionality to each other and to your system?

Do you plan to have a server based version available so we can access our data from anywhere we can log on and access our own web site, or is this restricted to PC environments?

Is your DB proprietary so we are locked in to buying future versions of your system if we want to access our data?

www.wjjsoft.com/mybase.html
www.wjjsoft.com/mybase_docs.html

myBase is a desktop program running on Windows, it doesn't support login/access over network. If you'd like to access databases over network, please try the web-based InnoKB Server, which allows multi-user to login and access to the database over network, For detailed info about InnoKB Server, please visit this webpage:
www.wjjsoft.com/innokb.html

myBase Desktop saves all info within the .nyf database file that is an efficient database format but proprietary. Although myBase will not lock user's data in. myBase provides a number of import/export utilities, so you have the convenience of importing/exporting info from/to various data formats at any time, even when you use the trial version. All the utilities specific to exporting data is listed on the 'Share' popup menu, while the import utilities are on the 'Capture' menu. In addition, myBase provides a set of APIs in javascript, which can be used to write your own scripts for particular import/export tasks or manipulations. In fact, almost all the inbuilt import/export utilities are written in Javascript, you can find the script source code under the ./plugins sub folder under its install folder. For a reference on the Javascript APIs, please visit:

wjjsoft support Dear Jarius Elliott,

Basically myBase Desktop works from within any accessible folders on the file system, including folders on removable disk drives (e.g. USB sticks), so you can put myBase program files on the USB sticks; And you may also put .nyf databases on a removable disk and open them with myBase Desktop. However, for safety and stability considerations, it's not recommended to open .nyf databases for editing from within a removable disk drive, in case of any potential USB I/O problems with the removable disk that may cause damage to the working databases. If you have to do so, please be sure to preserve backups of your important databases.

wjjsoft support Dear bvssunnydale,

Within myBase, you can choose to insert files as attachments or shortcuts/hyperlinks. Inserting files as attachments may bloat the database in file size, while inserting files as shortcuts/hyperlinks wouldn't consume too much space in the database.

When you have some large files need to organize within myBase, it's highly recommended to insert them as shortcuts or simply insert file links in the text area. Also, relative path is applied so long as you have the files stored in the same folder where the .nyf database file resides. The relative path helps maintain consistency between the original files and shortcuts/links.

For detailed instructions, please visit this webpage:
www.wjjsoft.com/mybase_do...ative_path

Any comments please let us know. Thanks.

wjjsoft support Dear Mitchell Kastner,

In order to export data to MSWord, please select the 'Share - Export MSWord outline' menu item, then enter a file to save the content. Note that MSWord 2000+ is required to be properly installed on the system for this utility to function normally.

Regarding the webcollect issues, please try to first highlight a part of the webpage, and then capture the highlighted protion with webcollect addon. In most of cases, the firefox/chrome version of webcollect works better than the IE version.

Stephen Cohen I HIGHLY recommedt myBase. I have been using myBase/WebCollect since version 3 or 4, i.e. for many years, and am quite happy with it. Below are responses to some of the posted comments.

1. In general, support has been great. For example, I suddenly found that I could not save pages from the "New York Times." (Apparently the "NYT" had made some change in the way it created Web pages.) I notified myBase support and in a few days it's developer (wjjsoft.com) sent me a link to an updated WebCollect that fixed the problem.
Recently, I had a problem with another Web page and notified wjjsoft. Just today, it sent me an email: "The website contains inner frames, webcollect won't save webpages in
frames. A workaround for this issue is to ..." (Too long to post here.)

I have never found a PIM that will save every Web page, and many that claim to save pages garble them or take forever to save them. myBase/WebCollect saves pages very fast and their format is the same as the original.

2. Important: You don't need to display ALL the windows shown above. You can choose which to display.

3. A very useful feature: For each item in the tree one can switch between two windows on the right side, one is the window containing a saved Web page. The other is an rtf window into which you can save Word documents, etc., type in notes about the Web page, etc.

4. myBase compresses the data files to save disk space.
5. You can index a data file to enable virtually instantaneous searches.
6. It has the equivalent of a tagging capability.

And much more

7. I've tried AllMyNotes. I much prefer myBase.

8. Re: InfoSelect: Latest version is buggy. I posted the following on a PIM discussion site:
"I downloaded IR 15.3 portable and tried a couple of things in the trial version. I found the following in the Hyperlinks information ‘Document”:

"1. Clicking on “Link to a file document” produces an error message that the file EPSMTL32.txt cannot be found. I did a search on the entire drive. It does not exist.

"2. Clicking on “Hyperlink to an Application” causes a calculator to appear.

"Appears too buggy for me."

By the way IS now costs $5.99. Apparently sales are way down.

YEP! I like myBase. It's not perfect, but compared to the others I've tried, it's great. And the developers keep improving it.

VLM Stephen Cohen - What a great review, thank you!

You mention that "I've tried AllMyNotes. I much prefer myBase." Would you be willing to elaborate just a bit?

Also, do you have any experience using MyInfo?

I guess looking at all those windows puts me off a bit. I am a big keyboard user, not keen on using a mouse more than necessary. But perhaps I'm missing something?

Thanks again!

Anatoli Lyssak I use MyBase since v.4. This is the best tool in the class.
I tried a lot of other tools to keep my notes/research/web pages.
Nothing can be compare with MyBase.
This is the only tool to keep me from switching to *nix.
When I was pushed to use Ubuntu, I've install VMware with Win7

Phred E You don't know InfoSelect? It's the grandad of all free-form PIMS.
Over the LAN here the trouble with IS is that it loads all data on start-up, so there's a pronounced wait until data slides along the LAN, and then it opens.
I'm looking for a PIM GUI that just loads data on demand - as you change to a window within it, its data gets called. Minimal delay. Does myBase do that?

Stephen Cohen To VLM:

Apparently I didn't keep notes on why I rejected AllMyNotes in favor of the PIMs I already had, and I no longer remember why.

I tried myInfo when it first appeared. My notes at that time said, "No formatting capabilities; cannot paste in pictures." However, this was from at least 6 years ago. It has been much improved since then.

For comments on a great many PIMs and Outliners, see

http://www.outlinersoftwa...pics/tlist

You can search for comments on MyInfo or other topics.

I, too, prefer keyboard to mouse/touchpad. However, myBase has so many capabilities that a mouse is sometimes preferable. For example, switching the right pane between the Web (html) window and the rtf window is most easily done by clicking an icon. Same is true for making the right pane fill the screen.

P.S. myBase has so many capabilities that I still haven't made use of all of them. I suggest you start with creating a new database (under FILE), adding Web pages (using WebCollect (right click on page), adding rtf notes, indexing (under FILE/Maintenance), and searching. That wil give you most of what you want.

VLM I am curious. One thing missing from products in this category is text formatting tags, or styles. There "should" be paragraph styles and character/string styles. Does myBase offer anything of the kind?

I'm intrigued by the comments here ... and I'm also leery about getting into something that appears, at least, to have a very steep learning curve. I'd almost prefer something with fewer capabilities but that is quick to master fairly well. Hmmm ... what do others think?

myBase is built on the SSG database engine that has been optimized for the tree structured data storage and worked efficiently so far. It simply loads data on demand, without having to load all the whole database from the disk at startup. There's a note about this question in the online documentation:

Mitchell Kastner I cannot install the webcapture utility either on Firefox or Chrome. When I copied text using Chrome I literally could not paste it into mybase. Bottomline I want to be able to see the addins in chrome when I use it and Firefox when I use it. I can see the add in icon for Mybase in IE, but not in chrome or firefox. When I downloaded the add in for Firefox an exe file was downloaded. I click on it but it did not install anything in Firefox. I don't need to have multiple windows appear in Mybase as I have multiple monitors. It would be nice if I could copying something from a browser open in one monitor and paste it to mybase; cannot do it from Chrome. I am frustrated because it looks as if the program has depths I could explore

wjjsoft support Dear Mitchell Kastner,

In order to get webcollect installed with Firefox/Chrome, please be sure to first launch Firefox or Chrome, then navigate to the webpage: www.wjjsoft.com/download.html , and then click the 'Install on Firefox' link within Firefox web browser, while the 'Install on Chrome' link for Google Chrome web browser, consequently you'll be asked to confirmation the addin installation, click 'Yes' or 'Confirm' to complete the installation. If all goes OK, you'll find 'Save with myBase' menu item when right-clicking on a webpage within Firefox/Chrome.

Before selecting the 'Save with myBase' menu item, make sure to first launch myBase Desktop and have the target database open and go to the info item where you'd want to insert the webpages.

myBase integrates the RTF control for rich text editing, which doesn't support the 'text folding' option. Well, we suggest that you try to save each text snippets in their own info items within the outline tree, instead of within only one or a few info items, so you can collapse/expand the outline items.

Rich OBrien I tried the trial download of myBase 6.1.3 and found I could perfectly paste in a table filled with formatted text and graphics. However, myBase has no Table Menu nor a context sensitive Mouse Table Menu. There is no support within the current version of myBase to create and define a table, nor insert columns, nor insert rows, delete cells, delete columns, or delete rows. I need support for tables and wonder if this will be added to myBase within 2013?
I'm pleased to read that the makers of myBase also make a browser add-on called Webcollect which works with Firefox/Chrome/IE to collect web pages or portions of web pages into myBase.
• myBase provides a very good selection of icons and a seemingly simple way to add more icons. However, myBase would be better if it could add regular .ico icons without the hassle of first converting .ico files into .bmp files.

wjjsoft support @Rich OBrien: Current version of myBase supports a few basic RTF table features, we'll try adding some more features in later versions. In order to use some advanced table features within current version of myBase, it's recommended to insert third-party spreadsheets as OLE Objects, by selecting the 'Edit - Insert - OLE Object...' menu item, this way, you can manipulate tables with ease by utilizing third-party applications (e.g. MS-Excel); Like any other types of files/documents saved as attachments within myBase, spreadsheet documents can also be inserted as attachments If you see fit, and you can edit/view the documents by invoking their associated applications.

Tom Chubb Been looking a several organizers lately (Ultra Recall, Rightnote etc) and I like the look of myBase. I need to be able to search inside pdfs, and this seems to work well. However, I am having no luck converting from Treepad (hjt) using the converter, it always hangs with 'unresponsive file' error. Same with Keynote files. Anyone managed to convert either of these formats successfully?
Oct 14 2013 at 4:00am Copy Link

wjjsoft support @Tom Chubb, Thank you for reporting the issue. But both the tree pad and key note files importing tools convert the specific file formats, only text-based .hjt/knt files supported, so please look into your files and see if they're text-based. If it's in some other formats, please try to first save them as the text-based file formats, and then retry the importing tool.

myBase Desktop provides some more import/export specific utilities which can be found in the 'Capture/Share' menus. You may try to first export the existing content as a directory tree and/or .rtf/html files in the file system, and then select the 'Capture - Import directory tree...' menu item within myBase Desktop.

Or,

try the 'Capture - Clipboard monitor' utility, which helps capture information from any other programs by clipboard. Usage is simple, copy something in a program, then you can choose to where to paste within the currently working myBase database.

wjjsoft support @Charles Beauchamp, A 'symbolic link' behaves like a shortcut to another info item, there're several synonyms such as virtual-node, shortcut, clone-node, reference, etc. We initially took the 'symlink' concept from Unix filesystem, one can create a symlink just containing a reference to another real item. Comparing to the real item, the symlink doesn't save its own data. When clicking on a symlink, it simply displays content of the referenced item instead of its own. If the referenced item is also a symlink item, it goes forward on the chain till the real item is reached, or an endless loop detected. Within myBase, you can create as many symlinks as you see fit. the drawback is that when you copy/export a branch contains symlinks, they're ignored. myBase supports hierarchical 'labels', which allows you to categorize the outline items in some other perspective, we suggest that you give it a try as well. Thanks.

Stephen Cohen I've been using the PIM myBase+WebCollect (a necessary plug-in) for years. Of all the programs I've tried, it does the best job of saving Web pages to your computer.

It probably has more features than you'll ever use, but you can just ignore what you don't need.

I have not found it to be buggy.

However, if you go to the site http://wjjsoft.com/download.html, you will find that 6.3 is a beta-2, so if you have a choice, I suggest 6.2, which is what I am using.

wjjsoft support @Stephen Cohen Thanks so much for your comments. We recently tried to integrate the new version 5 of the structured storage library into myBase v6.3, as it adds some new features such as AES data encryption, load-on-demand, instant-open and large file (2GiB) support etc. these are big changes in the lower layer storage library, we've been internally testing the storage library for several months though, but still decided to post the latest build to the public for beta-test, and look for possibilities of making the program run as stably as possible. The beta-test version is released in a .zip package, it's convenient to extract the .zip package into any folder to run for test without having to setup and overwrite the previous versions installed on the system. we suggest that you download a copy of the test version for testing. Any feedback or comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Don Goddard myBase looks very interesting. The product description says it is a free-form database, so this may be a redundant question. Is it possible to define fields to contain standard data for journal articles such as: journal name, journal volume, author(s) name(s), article title...? Thanks.
Oct 16 2013 at 7:16am Copy Link
0
wjjsoft support @Don Goddard, within myBase, each info item accepts a piece of text information as its default content and a list of files as attachments. In order to save those structured information, like records in traditional database systems, we suggest that you try to create a text template with the field names, like this,

journal name=
journal volume=
author name=
article title=
...

This way, you have the convenience of importing the template text into a new info item, when you'd want to add a new data record.

The 'Capture' menu contains the 'Import text from templates' utility which helps insert the fields names.

Stephen Cohen A bit more from a long-time user:

1. The developers are very responsive to questions.

2. I normally use myBase as a 2-pane PIM. I think of the left pane as an outlined table of contents and the search function as an index. (It has a very nice search function.) The right pane can be toggled between two panes corresponding to each item in the left pane tree: One of these right panes can hold RTF material (pasted or typed in). The other right pane holds html/Web pages copied using the plug-in WebCollect. There is also some editing capability of the html items.

3. As the illustration shows, one can have several different panes open at once.

4. There are also tags (called Labels). and you can switch the left pane from an outline of topics to an outline of tags. You can also switch the left pane to a Calendar or to a listing of bookmarks..

5. Finally, as I said before there are likely far more capabilities that you will ever use. I've been using it for years and still haven't used all the capabilities.
Don't let that discourage you: You can start out just using it as a two-pane PIM with the right pane toggled between RTF material and Web pages you've collected with WebCollect. If you will need to export a lot of material from myBase, check out the SHARE menu item to be sure you can export what you want in the way you want it.

wjjsoft support @Jeffrey Krzysztow No. The desktop edition doesn't support multi-editor access to the same database file, and it's not recommended to edit the database in a shared folder over network, in case of any network connection failure. We have released another web-based edition (InnoKB server), that allows multi-editors access over network by using a web browser.

Thanks for any feedback.

MojoMan I have a few questions as well. Can it render a webpage exactly as it appears ?

Can you save a pdf in native format to it or does it have to use a pdf app or preview handler ?

Can you use it with a scanner to archive documents etc ?

Can you create or save spreadsheets ? Does it perform calculations ?

How many levels in a tree heirarchy max ?

Can you save a document or other content to more than one category ? Can you create links between items ?

What form is the data formatted in when you want to export an item ? ie. can you export a pdf (assuming you can import a pdf) ?

Sorry for all the questions. The ONLY other program that is similar that I have found for Windows is Ultra Recall and it is powerful with a pretty serious learning curve. The program that is closest to what I've searched for is Devonthink... but it is a Mac only program. Amazing that there is nothing quite like it for Windows.

Thanks.

Spreadsheets and PDF documents can be imported as attachments (or shortcuts);

The "Share - Export PDF document" utility can be used to export current text contents as .pdf document;

The "Tools - Evaluate expression" utility can be used to calculate simple math expressions;

The level number of a tree hierarchy is unmetered;

The "Organize - link - link info item" menu item can be used to make item links, or make item links by dragging-dropping;

The "Organize - link - label info item" menu item can be used to add custom labels and label info items; The label system is also tree structured, and each info item can be associated with one or more labels;

MojoMan Hi wjjsoft,

Thank you for your reply and patience with all the questions.

So, in evaluating needs that are more important than others, I would place two items at the top of the list. One I had asked but not noted a response for is the ability to accurately capture a webpage (and not as a screenshot but as a true live page) and for it to be rendered as closely to the original page as possible.

The other is the ability to at least display a pdf without having to open an external program. Whether that can be done through integration with a pdf program as some programs do or if it can be done by a preview handler doesn't matter as much so long as it can do this. It is a real pain to have to open every pdf (which I use extensively) in an external application every time you want to view that content.

As noted I have tried various programs with addon's etc and the closest to ideal that I can come is OneNote. It will display a pdf but only as an attachment or a printout which defeats the purpose of trying to maintain content within a database and also adds a lot of extra steps to getting content in and out of ON.

Please comment on these two issues in particular. On a side note I still may try it for other purposes such as email filing where pdf format isn't critical so long as an email can be displayed as a native document. Is this possible ?

Thanks again.

wjjsoft support The ms-word importing tool was built with earlier versions of ms-office interop APIs for back-compatibility, that may have problems with newer versions of ms-word. For later versions we'll try to update the ms-word interop module. For now, it's recommended to import word documents as attachments by selecting the "Attachment - Add attachments" menu item; Or try first to save word documents as .html documents within ms-word, and then choose "Capture - Import files as child items" menu item; Or use Ctlr+C/V to capture the ms-word contents (or use Clipboard monitor); Or, try temporarily installing old versions of ms-word (e.g. 2000, 2003) on a PC or in a virtual machine for importing existing ms-word documents. @Peter

MojoMan Greetings,

Just wanted to ask.. version 7 has been around for awhile without many major updates lately. Is version 8 on the drawing board? If so, what new features or changes are expected?

A couple things I don't see is any email client or handling and the other I've hoped for in a PIM is native pdf handling (not editing). I'd just like to be able to import pdf's organize, crosslink, tag and view pdf's within the program and not have to open it in an external pdf tool or use a separate viewer.

Thanks.

Dunking If we're talking wishlists, I'd really really REALLY like tables that can be adjusted via dragging. I realise they are basically HTML tables, but having to enter % width or number of pixels for a column (iteratively until it is 'right') just keeps me looking at alternatives. So far, competitors that do great tables lack in other departments, but I shouldn't feel the need to be looking...

geo User A couple of questions for the developer and the community of users of this app.
Can anyone share their experience with well the web page capture works?
Do the pages look identical to the original viewed page?
If not what are the differences?
Does the web capture work with any chromium based browser like for example Vivaldi or does it have to be Google Chrome?
If version 7 is purchased as listed in this offer do we also get access to version 8 which is in Beta 2 currently?
Since v8 is still in Beta 2 what is the road map looking like for the new features planed ahead?
I would like to purchase but need clear answers to these questions.

Dunking I use this, and properly displaying a web page was an important aspect. The capture is... well, I don't use it now but much prefer to clip with SingleFile on FireFox (captures the page, or selected parts of same, to a single file for easy archiving). Process is capture that then import to MyBase as an attachment. MyBase then displays that capture whenever you switch to it (that is, you don't need to click a button or do anything to view it). Sounds a roundabout route, but the process works with any browser or HTML file without needing a special plugin.

However, a beef I have is that it is really really difficult to get rid of margins. Suppose, for instance, I am capturing the comments on this Bits page. There is a grey strip up the left then some white margin before comments. MyBase allows editing of the HTML either in WYSIWYG mode or as text. Unless you're a HTML guru the chances of getting rid of that left stuff is very small, so your nicely clipped comments will be offset to the right, possibly off the side of your page view.

But, having said that, I tried quite a few of these things before going for MyBase and most were worse.

The other issue I have is tables. They are HTML/markup tables, of course, so you can do things like set a column to 60% width or whatever. What you cannot do is drag the damn divider to wherever you want it to go. As a result, I find that entering data that should be in a table is a real pain because I spend far too long formatting the table by trial and error rather than thinking about the data going in it.

But... I am still using it. It has advantages other such applications don't have, and thus far they outweigh the annoyances.

wjjsoft support @Dunking, 1. the table resizing divider is still on the wish list. 2. the next version would include additional Pasting options that allows to specify display size on pasting images, and the Auto-enlarge/shrink to fit content view option is available.

wjjsoft support @Pete User, 1. All information users input are stored in the local .nyf database files, that can be synced on another computer by using a USB drive, file sharing over LAN, or using a third-party cloud service. 2. We don't provide cloud services, and currently the desktop edition doesn't include networking features. For web sharing, the .nyf database needs to be exported as HTML Tree and a collection of webpages that can be viewed with in a web browser; Or convert into the web-based InnoKB Server that allows multi-users to access over LAN or via the web by using a web browser. The nyf2innokb database converter is available for migrating Mybase database to InnoKB. For more info about InnoKB: www.wjjsoft.com/innokb.html 3. Robert User Question 1:
From the Fine Print section, I see that:

"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for minor versions only."

I do not see what the upgrade price would be for existing users when a new major version is released. Is there a discount for your existing customers? Regardless, what would the price be for upgrades?

Question 2:
Programming language syntax is very important in being able to quickly identify variables, reserved words, functions/methods, etc. There are several code editors that I simply do not enjoy using due to having an odd color scheme for a language. It is especially irritating when that color scheme does not match my default editor, and I have no control over it. I think now, that most code editors allow some customization, but I usually find the choices are very limited. These usually cause me to use them less or not at all. I like having the choice to modify the colors of any syntax highlighter to match as close as possible to my default editor. For example, I can have strings inside a single quote a different color from strings inside double-quotes. In PHP, the dollar sign is a different color than the variable. Those sort of enhancements of freedom of control makes me much more productive. I saw that MyBase Desktop currently supports 166 languages, which shows a commitment to making the product friendly for users. From your online notes, it shows that you use highlight.js, which does allow some customization, but still not as much as I would like. What I am curious about is can I make some adjustments (highlight.js) that will show up in MyBase Desktop, and when an update or upgrade occurs, are any of my changes lost?

Thanking you in advance.

wjjsoft support @Robert 1. The price for upgrades is half of the listing price for new customers and available to view on the webpage: www.wjjsoft.com/store.html 2. highlight.js is a powerful 3rd-party library integrated for syntax highlighting for HTML contents and may be customizable by revising its source/style code. If you use the Rich Text format, there's another easier way to customize the syntax highlighter by adding/revising patterns in the scripts: ./scripts/hlqt/*.js and the stylesheets: ./themes/common/hlqt* If you use the Dark mode, look into the ./themes/dark/ folder instead.

wjjsoft support @Robert W The [Capture - Import directory tree] utility imports all files from in the specified folder and its sub folders, and for each folder creates an info item in the database with contained files attached (or linked). All filenames generally remain unchanged, except that for any files named with "defnote.[html, htm, txt, md]" that will be imported and renamed as default text contents of the target info items. If this is the case, you'd try first to rename text content files as "defnote.[html, htm, txt, md]" and then import the directory tree. The [Capture - Import files as child items] utility doesn't import directory tree but imports all files contained within the specified folder excluding sub folders. All the [Import, Export] utilities are customizable by manually revising the js scripts: ./plugins/Import....js

Robert User Thanks wjjsoft for your reply, however, you may have misunderstood the gist of the questions. I still don't know if an upgrade would overwrite user customizations.

You mentioned directories/folders (e.g., scripts: ./scripts/hlqt/*.js, : ./themes/common/hlqt* and ./themes/dark/ folder), which suggest to me these folders would be part of the Mybase Desktop as part of the installed files. If I understand correctly, an update would also overwrite these same folders/directories. What would be necessary to preserve user's customizations?

wjjsoft support @Robert Re-installing the software overwrites all the script/stylesheet files as part of the software, you'd need to have customized scripts/stylesheets backed up before re-installing or upgrading. With the latest version, it's recommended to add a new theme folder under the ./themes for UI theme customization, instead of modifying the inbuilt script/stylesheet files. This way it'd be easier to backup/restore the customized scripts/stylesheets. For more info on customization of UI themes: www.wjjsoft.com/mybase_v8...l#uithemes

Rick Truell Flo: "Your website does not use https. Is that not pretty much the standard protocol nowadays?"

To some extent you're right, but the use of HTTPS really depends on the functionality of the web site. The only times a secure connection is **needed** is when sensitive information (login credentials, credit card details, personal information, etc.) is being exchanged. Since wjjsoft's web site doesn't seem to do any of that, a secure connection isn't **needed**. The parts of the site where one actually has to pay for something have HTTPS links to third-party sites where the payment information is collected.

That said, the main reason that sites that didn't **need** to use HTTPS didn't use it in the past is because SSL certificates were quite expensive. These days, however, Lets Encrypt offers SSL certificates for free, so there's really no reason for a new site to not use HTTPS right from the start.

However, given the choice between having a company with a long-existing, non-secure site spending their time converting the site to a secure one when it's not really **needed**, or spending their time upgrading/bugfixing their software...I'd rather they spend their time fixing bugs and doing upgrades.

Richard User 1) Does MyBase have any provision for tracking the source of imported data - files, directrory trees, webpages, etc - comparing the copies in the .nyf file to the source objects, and either reporting that the database copy differs from the original (because one or the other was changed or renamed/deleted), or refreshing the database copy to match the updated source file? If not, manually synchronizing even a small database with its source objects would be maddening.
2) Does MyBase allow selecting data and exporting to discrete files, and if so, to what file types?
3) And to repeat my question from last June, where is WJJSoft located?
