Dareen A Bridge For those who can not justify one of the professional DTP packages Serif's PagePlus is quite simply the best available. I have been using this software since PagePlus5 through to PagePlus10 before the company re-vamped its numbering system adding an X before a single figure, my current package being PagePlusX5 being one version prior to that offered.

Julie Miles This deal actually beats Serif's price of $59.99 to upgrade to X6 from X5.

Serif Thanks for your comment Dareen. We’re glad you like our software!

In answer to your questions Winton Guy:

The pdf. to PowerPoint converter is not included in this particular package because of the substantial discount to the software for this exclusive deal with Bits du Jour. Sorry.

Serif Technical Support is dedicated to providing a quick response to customers with thorough and efficient resolutions for issues directly related to Serif software products. The Customer Service Team are available online through our online support portal or over the phone:

As far as resources go this download version comes with all the same templates, graphics and other design content as the physical media version we sell.

If you meant ‘help’ resources- the User Guide is installed with downloads as a PDF, which can be accessed via the Start menu.

There is a ‘Resource Guide’ available but sold separately that can be considered an optional extra along with things like Pro Template Collections, but they’re not included with any version of PagePlus by default.

Hope this helps!

Julie Miles Apart from the omission of the pdf to ppt converter, are there any other differences between the BDJ deal and the regular upgrade? In other words, if I get the BDJ deal instead of upgrading my existing licence, will I be missing anything else?

The answer is no. The software is exactly the same.

Steve Amos To make an analogy, I use OpenOffice (or more accurately, LibreOffice) because there is no downside to my using it. It's stable, works well, and most importantly, it reads and writes everything it needs to to be pretty much compatible with everything else if anyone tries to make a stink that I'm not using Microsoft Office. If it didn't have that compatibility I wouldn't be able to use it to matter how great it was and no matter how much I really wanted to. It's all about being able to interact with the rest of the world.

I am very tempted to use PagePlus. It seems like excellent software, practically everywhere I look anyone who comments on it says extremely complementary things about it, it's certainly inexpensive enough, has a nice long pedigree, and so on. It's especially attractive because it tries to help me in my weakest area, that of artistic sensibility and talent. Applications like InDesign don't do that. Even if I am technically capable of using InDesign (and I am), it still doesn't help me with my primary weak area. In short, this offer seems like a really, really good thing.

My hesitancy is in the area of compatibility; it's the dealbreaker. It definitely outputs service-company standard formats in PDF and so on, but is it compatible with something more industry-standard like InDesign for when I have to interact with the rest of the world? If I want some creative consultant to give me a push start, they will almost certainly do it in InDesign and when I take over the project for maintenance I'll need to be able to read InDesign files. Or if I want to pass off what work I have done to someone who actually has some talent to clean up, I'll need to be able to write InDesign files almost certainly.

Can I do any of that with PagePlus? Asking such a question even sounds unreasonable to me for $50, but there you have it. If I can play nice with others, buying this software is a no-brainer.

Serif Steve Amos in answer to your question:

PagePlus can’t open or create InDesign files and InDesign can’t open or create PagePlus files.

EPS and PDF are professional options for importing artwork into PagePlus, for supplying artwork to other designers from PagePlus we would recommend PDF. PDF is suited to mixed document content and cross platform compatibility, and unlike an InDesign file a PDF will also contain required fonts and graphics needed when sharing work with others.

A PDF workflow should be acceptable; a 'creative consultant' will often own a suite of products including Acrobat Pro and Illustrator or a 3rd party plug-in like PDF2ID, so that they can edit PDFs. Or they could buy PagePlus too, as it is incredibly affordable! (PagePlus can run on Macs too with Bootcamp or a virtual Windows).

Just to put things in perspective Adobe InDesign + the PDF editing plugin ‘PDF2ID Professional’ would cost a total of $1198.

Hope this helps you to make your decision!’

Tim Parsons For what it's worth: I've used PagePlus since v3 many, many years ago, and I'm now using X5. There's very little I can say that's less than positive about the main products Serif produce -- PagePlus, PhotoPlus, WebPlus and DrawPlus being the most important (from my viewpoint, anyway.)

PagePlus is extraordinarily capable for everything from home-produced single-page newsletters to complete books, and I've never found anything that gets even close to offering the same "bang for your buck" with anything like the same ease of use (although I have still to assess Scribus, which is free!)

If I wasn't still in my usual post-Christmas poverty phase, I would be buying this without a second thought.

Anon eMous I've used and recommended several of Serif's programs for the past ten years now. I do recommend them in classes for students also. This includes PagePlus, DrawPlus, PhotoPlus, etc - and their others too - AlbumPlus and Panoramic software.

NOW - PagePlus -STILL- will -NOT- import WordPerfect files - the lonnnng time number one word processer in the legal world (and by far still the best) - not to mention the best long-document word processing software out there.

PLEASE - fix this deficiency

Serif Hi Jesus,

Thanks for your question. Yes you can export Books to ePub. To export to Amazon Kindle you do need to download a free plugin and the link for this is built into PagePlusX6.

Hope this answers your question!

Serif Hi Anon eMous,

You can import WordPerfect files into PagePlusX6.

If you create a new text box- right click and choose 'import text file'- select your WordPerfect document and select 'open'.

Hope this solves the problem and you are still happy to recommend our software in the future!

VLM This is probably a long shot, but ... Does anyone here have experience using Adobe FrameMaker, and if yes, can you compare the 2 products?
Jan 26 2012 at 9:24am Copy Link
0
Serif Hi VLM,
I haven't used Adobe FrameMaker, but I will be happy to answer any questions you have on the PagePlus X6.
Serif Ltd. - Jan 26 2012 at 1:33pm Copy Link

VLM Yes, I see that you have made yourself very available during this conversation, and I appreciate that. But FrameMaker represents a rather specific way of thinking about publishing, particularly for long documents. It has fabulous capabilities for building generated sequential lists (ToCs, lists of figures, tables, etc.), indexes and sorted lists of almost any imaginable kind, glossaries, and more. It can produce proprietary, xml, SGML, DITA-compliant, and other output suitable to heavy-duty publishing. It offers a very template-oriented approach wherein table types, paragraph types, character (string) types, condition types, and more ... whole DTDs ... are all predefined and with very rich attribute sets.

Unfortunately, development has fallen behind, over the years, with respect to web-readiness, the cost of the product is high, and so the installed base is rather limited. Hence, my inquiry.

Does this help at all?
Jan 26 2012 at 1:46pm Copy Link

Serif The ToCs have been drastically improved in the PagePlus X6 to make it easier and more robust.
We now have it so that users can add multiple ToCs to one document. It is possible to have a full or partial ToCs and there is a new ToC tab that makes it easy to manage and edit ToCs contained in a document.

From reading your comment, are you saying that the Adobe FrameMaker can export the document to XML, SGML etc?

We have our own standard table styles, paragraph styles and character styles, but you can create your own.

Having personally (and having asked some of my colleagues) not used the Adobe FrameMaker, it is very difficult to answer your questions directly, but I hope this helps answer your questions.

Don Goddard I have used desktop publishing program since owning my Amiga 500. Now that I am on a PC I have tried several DTPs but PagePlus is my favorite (and the only one installed on my PC). It has a very powerful set of features. I credit it for allowing me to credit a huge project for a youth group I volunteer for. It exported directly to a print quality pdf file that I was able to submit to a professional print company and gave me a fantastic product. Even though I tried to use 300 dpi graphics for most of the project I was forced to use a few lower dpi graphics that I could not find substitutes for. Even those looked great!

Eddie @Serif,
Thanks for the reply. I have to say that I am disappointed since there was no indication that the BdJ promo was different from the website product. The first thing I saw after clicking the website link here at BdJ was "Free PDF to PowerPoint software worth $29.99"

I don't recall making a purchase through BdJ and having something like this happen.

The "substantial" discount is not that substantial considering we received $30 less in software.

I just hope it works for my needs, given that there was no demo. Also the download kept going on after 1.2 GBs and it was useless. I'm downloading again, with over an hour to go...
Again, disappointing.
Jan 27 2012 at 7:24am Copy Link
0
Serif Hi Eddie,

We didn’t advertise this promotion as coming with the PDF to PowerPoint converter- it was not included in the product description on the BDJ site and also highlighted earlier on the comments board.
The speed of the download will vary depending on your internet bandwidth but the software itself is a large file due to all the material and resource included in the program, so you will have to be patient with the download.

If you have any more problems please email me directly at affiliatesserif.com
