What are people saying about Paragon Migrate OS 5.0 (English)

Software Babe I just purchased an SSD and was looking for exactly this type of software. I want to migrate my current hard drive contents, with its O/S over to the new 120GB SSD. Hope this is possible for me!!!
Can't wait. If it does the job, I WILL BUY IT!

Rick Truell 1. On your web site, it says "Supports any Windows since XP". Does that *include* XP?

2. Also on your web site, it says "If the selected disk is big enough to hold the operating system, it starts the migration". (in this quote, 'selected disk' refers to the destination disk). This makes it sound like, if the destination disk *is* large enough, the migration starts immediately, without further input from the user. If that is indeed the case, can the program be configured so that it *doesn't* start immediately, so that the user can choose to exclude data files from the migrate, even though it isn't technically necessary?

3. One fairly common configuration with an SSD, particularly with Linux or on a Mac, is to have only the OS files on the SSD, with all user data remaining on a regular HDD. I'm talking about things like the "My Documents" (or whatever it's called in Vista/7/8) directory or even the entire user's "home" directory (C:\Documents and Settings\username\ in XP; I don't know what it is in Vista/7/8). Of course, in order to do that, you have to create links in the original places pointing to the new locations, or the OS will just crash-and-burn. Can "Migrate OS to SSD" do that kind of thing, creating appropriate links as necessary?

Paragon Software Hello Rick!

Please find comments below.

1) yes, XP is supported
2) sure, you still can exclude some files if you want to. Just excluding is not necessary if destination disk is big enough
3) Migrate OS only takes info form system and boot partitions. If some folders are located on any other partition, they won't be copied. The problem is that when you boot from destination disk, new copy of Windows may use not the same drive letters for non-system partitions. If MyDocs were on E:, new Win may mount that drive as D:. And Migrate OS can't know in advance which drive letters will be assigned to each partition and what to each partition. The only sure thing is that Windows always runs on C:. However you can edit drive letters manually, and make partition with MyDocs to be E: again. So new Windows will simply link to old docs files on E:.

Petr I just purchased a 512GB SSD for my Lenovo ThinkPad. I've used Paragon's software for disk managment and backup for several years with success. When migrating to SSD, there are things like data alignment and Windows settings to optimize for the SSD. For example, Windows file Indexing and disk defrag should be turned off. Does Migrate OS to SSD 2.0 make those other adjustments?

If I already have your Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12 Pro, does Migrate to SSD 2.0 have any additional functionality that Disk Manager does not?

After the migration of my Windows 7 Pro, I will be upgrading to Windows 8 Pro. Are there any further considerations?

I assume this software and HD Manager 12 Pro are compatible wth Win 8? Thanks.

Paragon Software Hello Petr,
Paragon Hard Disk Manager 12 Pro (HDM) includes Migrate OS to SSD 2.0 fully and there are no any addition features in it. You can continue use your really the best solution for disk managment and migration issues. Unfortunately the current version of HDM 12 Pro officially are not compatable with Windows 8 as well as Migration OS to SSD 2.0 to be offered here. Please check your "account" on our website occasionally to find out a new update soon.

Rick Truell Hi, Pavel!

Regarding your answers to my previous questions:

1. Yay!! :-)

2. Yeah, I know it's not *necessary* to exclude files if the destination disk is large enough, but there are good reasons to *want* to do so when that disk is an SSD.

3. Hummm, yes. I'd forgotten about Window's tendency to occasionally jumble drive letters...just one more way in which the *nix OS's are superior. Oh, well...I figured it was a long shot that your program could hack apart Windows in the way I wanted, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask :-) I'll just have to do it the hard from scratch!

Al Prescott Can Migrate OS to SSD 2.0 do its migration, or I'll call it cloning, outside of Windows? In other words, to boot into Migrate OS to SSD from a created boot disc. Also, does it do a bit for bit migration?

Also, does it properly align the partitions for SSD? (

Amit @ Bitsdujour Admin

( I would very much like to know whether the license policy remains the same for MOST of the softwares promoted on bitsdujour, by MOST vendors, or some licences are changed especially for some particular softwares deals - as the license policy of most of the softwares is not clear or shown on the respective vendor / author sites - not talking about paragon but all. I come to get to know the licenses here only )
Sep 30 2012 at 1:01am Copy Link
Constantin Florea @Amit We always ask our vendors to fill in the license policy as they know the product best. There are extremely rare cases where we fill the license policy ourselves. So to answer your question: the license policy is updated/verified before each promotion we run.

RichU Hello! I already own Paragon Migrate OS to SSD, but cannot find where to see the version number., so I don't know if it is version 2.0.
Where can I find that info. Also, what are the new features of 2.0?

Software Babe Pavel,
Are you saying that it will not take the system restore files from the partition on the C:\ drive? I have an HP 4-core w/640gb hard drive which is partitioned: D: has the system's restore CDs there so if anything happens to my PC, I can restore it all from that partition.

Sep 30 2012 at 10:06am Copy Link
Amit I guess this can be installed on two desktops too. Is that right ?
Sep 30 2012 at 10:09am Copy Link
Warren Russell Pardon my ignorance, but why would I need software like this? Can I not just restore to the SSD from a backup of my old hard drive?

(Just started looking into getting an SSD, so I'm not yet aware of all the ramifications of such a move.)

J.C. Can this tool also move the OS to the SSD and keep the Profiles with UserData on the HDD ?

i.e.: I have a 500GB and newly bought 64GB SSD. When i use your software can it move the OS to the SSD and leave all Profile folders on the HDD ? And does it modify registry settings to accomplish this ?

If someone has a 500GB HDD and wants to go over to SSD they would need an expensive 500GB SDD. But having the OS on the SDD and the files/folders/profiles on the HDD would be the best and most affordable solution.

Michael Burkley I was wondering... If I already have Paragon Partiton Master software (which is great for resizing/creating/etc partitions, would getting this be helpful? That already has a migrate to SSD feature. Is that just as capable as what this program does?

Thanks for you excellent software!

I have Paragon drive copy 12 Pro, will it have same functions as this one
in migrating to SSD ?

S B As a Paragon software owner, I can say that Paragon has had powerful, professional software for many years.

One important question: will Paragon Migrate OS to SSD help migrate software from an old (Dell) XP machine to a very different newer machine (with a very different Motherboard and very different drivers)?

Also, is the functionality of Migrate OS to SSD contained in the Paragon Hard Disk Manager Suite?

Many thanks!

DroidLuvr I guess no one is here from Paragon to answer any questions: that isn't a good sign to me, although I do own several of their software products, product support has always been a major feature that has been lacking IMHO...

I would be disappointed to buy a software like this and find I needed support in the middle of my transfer and was unable to get any questions answered :(

Stefan Hauber I have a strange phenomenon with my SSD-drive, on which I created a single non-bootable partition for common data: Just by changing the main harddisk - I have one for win7 and one for win8 - always seems to make the SSD-filesystem corrupt. Rebooting again with the same harddisk does not.

Is this a typical and explainable side-effect of a SSD-Harddisk? If yes, why does that occur?

Can 'Paragon Migrate OS to SSD' can do something about that?

M M 1. Is this a subset of Drive Copy, or does it include functionality which is not available in DC?
2. Can it copy the system from a BitLocker encrypted disk connected by USB to another drive (internal or also external)?

EdSaid 1) Is this compatible with GPT disks?
2) does it create the Microsoft Reserved Partition (MSR)?
3) What has been changed in this version (4.0)?

I have Migrate OS to SSD v.2, and HDM 12 Professional (which contains Migrate v. 3). Neither one of those creates the MSR partition.

HJ B 1. Will this program migrate the OS to an external USB SSD?

2. Will the migration leave the original installation intact so that the computer is thereafter bootable from either the original installation or the USB SSD?

3. Will the USB SSD also be able to boot another computer or is it suitable only to boot the computer from which it was migrated?
Oct 1 2016 at 9:42am Copy Link
Christopher J. Spilker Hi,
Is the migration done via a boot CD/DVD or directly from within the Windows environment {WIN PE / Volume Shadow Copy, etc.}?
For those who believe this is a product to clone a new drive for insertion to another computer, that is erroneous and usually a flagrant violation of the Windows Terms of Agreement. Besides, Windows can become deactivated and the resultant hardware mismatch will necessitate installing all the proper Drivers.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Christopher J. Spilker

TAPTRONIC Scenario: I purchased a Dell. It came with Windows 10 on a hard drive. I havent done much more than personalize the new Dell.

I also purchased a SSD that I want to install into it. I would like to "clone" the entire hard drive onto the SSD and use the SSD as the boot drive. Same new Dell.

Can this software do that?

major4579 How long can I hold the licenses before installing. I will be migrating my father's laptop from HDD to SDD in the future, don't know when. Can I buy the software now and NOT install/register it until I'm ready to make the migration, even if it's months in the future?
Apr 5 2017 at 7:23am Copy Link
yabatopia @NC Buyer. I did that for my father's system. He switched from a classic HDD to a SSD and I used Paragon Migrate to transfer Windows and his data to the SSD. Just make sure that your SSD has enough storage capacity for all the data on your old hard drive.

Johno Hi,
@ Christopher J Spilker, @ Branko Rakamaric and @ NC buyer - I have replied to you all in this response, pls read comments addressed to you below.

@ Christopher J Spilker - settle down, your the first person to mention that in recent chats, you seem to speak with the voice of experience ? Most people are not thinking like that, but rather just as per the title, to migrate Windows safely to an SSD. The great thing about this program is that it allows you to transfer JUST your operating system to the SSD, the other files can be stored on your old hard drive which can be still connected and running within your PC. This is not however the case with laptops, unless you laptop is one of the few that have capacity for two 2.5" hard drives. If only one hard drive slot is available to you in your laptop, you will then need to purchase a hdd with the same or larger capacity to what you now have. People who would like to increase their general speed without having to pay as much for a hdd should also consider drives like Seagates Hybrid drive, which combines a small SSD hdd (approx. 8Gb) and a normal hdd in one. It does increase general speed & boot time. Yes, Paragon Migrate OS can be used to do even that, you dont *have to* be installing an SSD drive for the program to work, and you *dont have to* move data at all, you can simply use it to install a new hdd of the same size that's not an ssd if thats what you need to do.

@ Branko Rakamaric - Hard Disk Sentinell is not the same sort of program at all, it is primarily to give you alerts about the state of health of your hard drive. Its goal is to give you early enough warning of a failing hard drive so that you can back up and replace the drive before the hard drive dies completely. It does not copy clone or migrate software onto another hdd.

@ NC buyer - the simple answer is yes, its the options that make it complicated. If you are talking about a Laptop system, then pls. see parts of my comment above to Branko. If you are talking about a desktop system, than unlike Yabatopia's response, you do *not* need to purchase an SSD that has enough storage capacity to hold all the data on your old hard drive, you only need an SSD hdd large enogh to hold Windows with with some over (best to have at least 4gb to 20gb spare - if you want to install more programs into your pc, they will want to install to your C: drive - for instance in Program files or Program Files (x86) - so having spare space is a good idea - also if your system doesn't have very much ram, Windows can make part of your SSD drive the 'pagefile' etc. that it uses as pseudo 'ram' which will be much faster if it can do that on your SSD. (there are other variables to this situ, but it would take up more time/space)
Paragon Migrate OS will allow you to choose what you want to keep on your main C: drive (your new SSD) and what you want moved to your old hdd so that just Windows and a few other things you choose (if you have space) can stay on your new SSD.

I hope this clarifies some things.
Take care,
