What are people saying about Password Depot

Genie au Travail I have already a licence for this software and I can say that this is the best software in his category.

His best feature is the topbar with the auto-complete function that works with EVERY browsers (no need to update Password Depot because a new version of the browser that you use has been release).

Every others Passwords Management software that I have found and tested have always used plugins integrated only into a FEW browsers that must be updates when a new version of the browser has been release.

Lupke Brother I have been a big Acebit fan for a few years now. In fact, I own all there software. Maybe because they had a 14 years celebration discount sale last may, where you could buy all software for 14 euros each :-). Very very great offer, so I bought them all. The only piece I have problems with is their Wise FTP software. I have been using password depot for 3 years now and I must say it's good software. Free portable version, never had a single crash, great topbar like Genie says, clipboard protection et cetera. Here is the overview: http://www.password-depot...erview.htm Every time a browser updates, like the many FF updates, PD comes with an update very fast. When you need an upgrade in the future you only pay €9,95. Use the trial and see for yourself.

S B Password Depot looks quite nice: there are many good-and-sophisticated sounding features, though I have a few important questions, please.

0) Is Password Depot intended for long-term secure archiving of passwords and related data?

I didn't see details on the encryption--how is the encryption managed? (PD looks too good for "security through obscurity")

1) Is "salt" used? (Will the same data encrypted with the same master password give the same encrypted file?)

2) For encrypting a "password file," are there any sources of "entropy" ("randomness") other than the master password?

2.5) How are "internal keys" generated and used?

3) Which hash algorithm is used?

4) How long can the master password be? How much of a very long master password will actually be used?

5) Are the master password or "internal keys" stored with the data?

6) Once a "password file" established and in use, can the master password and key file be changed?

7) Can the data within a "password file" be exported?

8) What are the sources of "entropy" for the "password generator"?

9) How long can a generated password be?

Many thanks!

Amit I would like to know of some questions -

1) Is it itself portable or not ?

2) Can it work with portable firefox, portable opera and portable maxthon too or only installed browsers of above 3 ?

3) does it have a form filler inbuilt too

thanks,

I am a RoboForm user, but apparently I've missed this one. What do you dislike about the new RF licensing policy?

And I echo SoftCollector's question ... Is anyone in a position to compare and contrast this product with RoboForm?

It is true that RoboForm gets into problems, at least with Firefox, on a somewhat tedious basis.

njf Roboform is now an annual licence fee and not that cheap. I don't think you can export passwords from Roboform. I think they took that out a little while ago. Not good that they let you import passwords from other software but not export them.

Stan @Norman Fisher: You can export the data by printing and saving them as a html-file.
The annual fee is for Roboform Everywhere only.

Steven Avery Hi,

And I would be interested in some comparisons with LastPass and KeePass.

(Allowing that LastPass keeps the data on their servers, which some find inappropriate for the genre.)

The Browser issue is minor for me, if Firefox is ok. (90% FF use, 9% Chrome and Opera, 1% IE)

Plus I don't really care about filing forms, remembering phrases or making low acid coffee. Although PD is supposed to be good on forms.

Simply password maintenance, remembrance, utility, versatility, portability, security.

Here is an interesting Wilder's 2010 discussion, apparently AceBit's program appears a couple of ways ?

Any Better Alternatives Than RoboForm?
http://www.wilderssecurit...p?t=284953

They liked the program, but there is an issue about losing one-click save.

As you have in LastPass (ie. you should be able to save the password and then move around groups and such later). Is that better now ?

Note that AceBit has a freeware AceBackup .. hmm.. with an active forum .. needs comparison to Cobian and others.

Lupke Brother well, nobody is responding from Acebit, so let's try to answer some questions as a user. I have no relation with Acebit!

@ softcollector
PD has everything Roboform has, except auto form filling. It has a FREE portable version (RF does not) and is very very stable.

@ Brian H.
Yes, but be aware, not all webpages allow for auto filling, but in that case you can use PD's auto-fill selection tool

@ SB
yes, for long term use.
encryption: Rijndael 256 Your password list is protected twice: with the master password and with an internal key.
Look here for an overview: http://www.password-depot...erview.htm

@ Norman
PD says: Import/export of passwords from/to other password managers. Did not test with RF, but you can import CSV or you can adapt an exported file in Excel and import to PD

@ Steven
You can keep your data on your pc, usb stick or whatever and/or upload to the PD server
FF works perfectly at my place. In case of a FF update, PD will be adapted to work in a few days with the new updates.
You can store whatever information you want in PD: password, encrypted files, information, identitys, licenses, credit cards et cetera.

Hope this answers a few (not all) questions

VLM Stan Lewis AND Lupke Brother - Thank you!

As others have commented, I also don't use RoboForm much for form filling, I tend to make too many custom entries, so a product like ClipCache works better for me.

But I DO use RoboForm's SafeNotes feature quite a bit and have intended to use it even more. Does PD provide any comparable functionality?

Also how is PD support? I would not want to imagine that the vendor's "presence" today (as it were) is suggestive of the kind of support they typically provide.

Lupke Brother @ VLM
I also use clipcache. Great product, and Password depot has clipboard monitoring. Great combination

Safenotes can be made. You can make categorys for everything you want to keep in PD, but you CANNOT give a different password tot every note you make. It's just protected by the master password. You can also make multiple password files for different things, i.e. a password file for you notes, a passowrd file for you software et cetera.

PD support is a bit slow in my opinion, but they always respond withing an acceptable time frame (24-48 hours), except for the pre-sale department. That department is too slow in my opinion and can do a better job.

Acebit sent me a mail today, to thank me for my answers here, but they forgot to show themselves here :-) So they are there...

S B @ Lupke Brother

Thanks for stepping in in the absence of a response from AceBIT! And thanks for your first-hand insights.

Thanks, too, for the security overview link, though my questions actually came *after* reading that page (and whatever else I could find on the AceBit site).

Yes, the AES *can be a part* of great platform for security! Alas, security relies just as heavily on (pseudo) randomness and password management.

For example, a 256-bit key sounds nice, but is it meaningful: can AceBIT handle pass-phrases long enough to have 256 bits of randomness? And what is the source of randomness for the actual AceBIT-generated encryption keys?)

Sadly many AES-based systems are insecure.

For conveniently storing most web passwords Password Depot may not need to be very secure, but especially with security software we need to know what we're getting.

The "buzzwords" look OK, but what do they mean to AceBIT?

Password Depot looks great; once we know about it's level of security I'm ready to become a Password Depot fan, too.

Let's hope AceBIT steps up and responds with real information!

Thank you!

VLM Lupke Brother - Thank you! In theory it's nice to have separate SafeNote passwords, but in practice I have found it impractical.

So it sounds like the 2 products are comparable overall, and from the website, I see some functionality in PD that I don't see in RF.

Still wonder whether PD can import from RF. I hope someone from AceBIT shows up today!!!

AceBIT @ SoftCollector; It is difficult for us to answer your question, maybe this helps: "Password Depot 4 is chosen to be "best in test" in a comparative test for password managers in the 03/2010 issue of Computer Bild (rating 2.62)!

Whereas competitor products like for example RoboForm or Keepass could only achieve an "inadequate" due to considerable gaps in security, experts from the German Fraunhofer Institute who tested the program for Computer Bild, state about Password Depot:"

@Brian H: Password Depot offers addons for Firefox, Chrome and IE which support auto fil of forms. Additionally you can use the function "auto fil" from the Topbar in order to auto fill forms.

AceBIT @S B

0) Is Password Depot intended for long-term secure archiving
of passwords and related data?

Yes

I didn't see details on the encryption--how is the encryption managed? (PD looks too good for "security through obscurity")

AES 256 bits

1) Is "salt" used? (Will the same data encrypted with the same
master password give the same encrypted file?)

The master password is defined by the user. The stronger your master password, the higher the security of your data.

2) For encrypting a "password file," are there any sources of "entropy" ("randomness") other than the master password?

Password Depot encrypts the data based on your master password and uses an additional internal key.

2.5) How are "internal keys" generated and used?

3) Which hash algorithm is used?

4) How long can the master password be? How much of a very
long master password will actually be used?

256 chars

5) Are the master password or "internal keys" stored with the
data?

Of course not

6) Once a "password file" established and in use, can the
master password and key file be changed?

Yes

7) Can the data within a "password file" be exported?

Yes, into CSV and XML

8) What are the sources of "entropy" for the "password
generator"?

Random movement of mouse

9) How long can a generated password be?

256 chars

M M In my experience it was typically possible to copy data from IE to MsWord (a table in htm would paste as a table in Word), then from MsWord to Excel. Direct copy from IE to Excel typically did not work well. You can also try opening the htm in Word, but I have not tried this.

Then, you can save from Excel as CSV.
And be sure to securely erase all temporary files (and close them in Word and Excel before automatic safe copies are created).
Hope this works for you.

Steven Avery Hi,

Again, as above, let me ask if you have a one-click save option. Remember many passwords are only of mild security interest (eg. web discussion forums) and you like to quickly get the password in and then have it pop up when you return to the site. Without a lot of thinking and grouping.

If you do not have one-click save, are you trying to move in that direction ?

Also if you have five accounts (e.g. gmail) can PD offer you which one you are putting in right now ?

Thanks.

Brian H Has anyone compared this to "Roboform" (which seems to be the "standard" of software in this category) yet? I would be interested to know what features are similar or perhaps lacking between the two programs. For me, perhaps the most important feature is the ability of the program to "auto-fill" the appropriate stored password into the website in a variety of the currently popular browsers. Also, I like to have the ability to store and choose from multiple (perhaps even 2 or 3) different user data/passwords for multiple users on the same website. And, of course, the ability to store and "auto-fill" personal information (such as addresses and phone numbers) onto web-forms is always an added bonus. So far "Roboform" seems to be able to do all of this very well; but I am always open to other alternatives. Will share my findings/thoughts if I have the time for a "trial install" and likewise would be interested in hearing from anyone else who is able to do the same; or perhaps has some prior experience using this program. -Brian

Free Ride The neatest feature of those password managers is the browser integration with auto-fill ability. I used Sticky Password but it does not support Comodo Dragon and never has and maybe never will (but Chrome) and i don't want to be forced to use a specific browser only to be able to use a password manager, so i gave Password Depot a try (it supports Comodo Dragon). That is the first PLUS.

Fast install, easy registration. A PLUS.

The interface is easy to understand, it should go fast to handle this program for the average user (and it has a Expert mode for advanced users with advanced features and settings). That is the next PLUS.

So i created a little test-database with Master Password. I fastly figured out, that you can handle a complete database with groups, you also can drag&drop accounts or whatever without adding them to a group or editing the entry into any other group later to sort them like you wish, that's pretty good and a PLUS.

For the auto-fill on websites, if you use any other auto-fill password tools, you should deactivate/disable them while using Password Depot, e.g. if you use LastPass and Password Depot at the same time, you are signed in to it, Password Depots auto-fill will be overwritten by LastPass, so you might think that auto-fill of Password Depot doesn't even work but it does (also in Comodo Dragon) and that is a PLUS (for me, at least, with Dragon) too.

All in all, i'm very thankful to be able to grab that Bit today (the Professional version). And i might stick to it and like it exactly how it is and i highly recommend to take the advantage and grab it today.

Thanks AceBIT and BDJ. ;)

Before I pull the trigger I have a few questions:

1) If I have 3 computers (work, play and laptop), do I need to purchase the program 3 times or is it linked to the user? Ideally, I would like the program to be installed on 3 different machines without needing the memory stick version.

2) Can it be used to fill in logins and passwords for programs like Steam or the desktop version of Dropbox/SkyDrive?

3) Any plans for WP7 (not Win mobile) or Win8/RT devices.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

AceBIT @Mike:

1) Please download and install Password Depot.

2) Launch the program and click the tab with the lock symbol, which is located next to the "Home" tab. Click "More" on the left side and then the UNLOCK button.

3) The dialog "Order and unlock Password Depot" will be opened. Click the UNLOCK NOW button.

4) Follow the wizard's steps.

IMPORTANT: During registration you are prompted to enter an activation key. The activation key is *not* identical with the attached unlock code! To request the activation key click the "Request Activation Key" button of the wizard. The activation key is sent to you automatically by email.

Mike Henning Hello,
I thank you for your answer.
After launching the program, i have on the top left side six icons with the first one with a lock symbol. There are the restore, reduce and close buttons active.
Then I have 4 tabs: File, Home, View and Tools.
The file tab has an option for "additional" (more ?). I have an unlock option in Administration. There is a windows saying 30 days of 30 left.
Unlock Software gives me 2 steps: 1) Purchase unlock code and 2) Unlock trial version to full version.
2 has a "unlock now" button, which gives a new window with next, and then a windows with fields for address and others. Only field which is necessary is the email. Then i can request an activation key which is sent by ACEBIT.
But they say it is an activation key and not an unlock key. This one is only given when the software is bought.
Nowhere is a field to enter the key that you have send.
So it seems that it is not possible to enter the unlock code...

Can you provide an update on the status of your Android app development? It has been almost a year since your last update, and there are simply too many issues with this app to commit to the desktop version as a permanent replacement for password management.

How to unlock Password Depot

You will need two kinds of codes to unlock Password Depot
1. Activation key (will be sent to your Email Adress after requesting)
2. Unlock Code (This is the code you’ve already received)
Step 1
After installation is finished, you’ll see the options ‘buy an unlock code’ and ‘unlock it with your existing unlock code’. Please choose the second one.

Step 2
A new Window will be opened. This window shows two possibilities:
1. Get an unlock code, or
2. Unlock to full version with your existing unlock code.

Step 3
Enter Personal Information to get activation key
The activation-wizard will ask you about your personal information, please fill in your Email address at least.
(Make sure the email isn't in you spam folder)

Step 4 Request Activation Key
Click the “Request Activation Key” button. A free activation key will be sent to the email address you had previously specified within a few minutes.
After receiving the activation key, enter it into the corresponding field.

Step 5 Enter Unlock Code
Enter the unlock code which you have allready received form BitsDuJour

Your activation has been completed!

Constantin Florea @jacques robert - Please ensure that you do not enter the registration code (from the receipt email you received) in the activation text field. The way the registration works is that you first need to receive the activation code in your email (after requesting it from inside the application) which you then enter in the activation text field and that will unlock another field in which you can enter the registration code from the receipt email you received.

mnazmi This is my one of most favorite programs.
Very handy, very good user interface.Nice USB installation function and cloud support.
Only downside for me
1. It has not support Opera web browser add-on
2. Not support Windows Phone
3. If site has input password and ID on the top right ,"Cancel Windows" is covers them. And you don't use Auto-Cmplate function. No way change direction this "Cancel Window" and no other alternative (like key function etc.)

If you are looking for password manager, I strongly recommend this progarm.

Feb 24 2014 at 2:35pm Copy Link

Constantin Florea @John Adams - To receive the receipt email containing the registration code you need to click on the Get It For Free button and continue all the way to the checkout page. When you reach the checkout page, our system will send you the receipt email automatically. Constantin Florea @freddy debrouwere - If you have trouble seeing the purchase pop-up (after clicking on the Get It For Free button), then please try using another browser like IE, Chrome, Firefox or Opera while purchasing. Kenneth Richards Ok so I received the email and downloaded it just fine but when i try to unlock it i get this error during the registration process. When i hit the 'request activation key' button this pops up. Status code: The system cannot find the file specified. (Code2)
Hints for solving the problem:
-Please make sure you are connected to the internet.
-If you are using a firewall, please make sure that you enabled "password depot 7" to access the internet
-Check whether correct proxy settings are used
-This may be a temporary problem caused by an overload of the server, please try again later
-If the problem persists please contact support @acebit.com referring to the above status code.

Are other people through this giveaway getting this? Do i need to try to resolve this through the software company?

Joe M I read that a lot of people were having a hard time getting this program.
It downloaded it with no problems.
The BitsDuJour software receipt was in my inbox within 2 minutes after placing the order.
It was able to install it with no problems.
I was able to register it with no problems.

My only problem is I can not get the import feature to work. I read the instructions in the HELP file, but when I go to the Tools setting I can see the Export/Import box along with the Sync icon, but they are all grayed out so I can not use this feature. I want to Import my LastPass information from a CSV file. If I can't get the Import feature to work this program will be useless to me and I will uninstall it. I am glad it was Free.

AceBIT You have all received a valid unlock code! To activate Password Depot you need two keys.

1) unlock code (sent to you from BitsDuJour in an email "Registration Information")

2) activation key

The (temporary) activation key is requested in the software itself via the button of the same name.

The activation key is automatically generated by our server and sent by email. It's free of charge. A new activation key should be requested before each new activation of the software. Do not store the activation key as it can change at any time.

When activating your software, please make sure that you insert the activation key and the unlock code into the corresponding fields.

On our website you will find a short video tutorial showing the activation of your product:

Donald Baker Registered at last. Here is what I did:
Download program from BitDuJour and install. You will be asked to fill in your credentials and Acebit will send you an activation code, enter and proceed to next. The next box will ask you to fill in the key from BitDuJour, fill in and you are now Registered.
PS. You may have to request the receipt from BitDuJour more than once.

Gary Smith It is not guaranteed that the Resend Receipt will work the 2nd, or even the 3rd time. One user mentions after 8 times, they still did not receive it. I gave up after 3 attempts spread out over yesterday and today, then finally decided to try it a 4th time, and that time the Unlock code was in the yellow section of the e-mail. So, no matter how many times you have tried, keep trying. It might eventually work.

I am surprised that nether Bitsdujour nor AceBit has explained why this happened.

On another note, the Fine Print states that the program can be installed at any time, which is a deviation to the standard Bitsdujour "free" offers. Also, the fine Print states that this version can be updated until the next major version. That seems like a mute point, since this version is 10.5.5, and the latest version the company is selling is already on version 11 (11.0.3). I seriously doubt there will be any additional 10.x versions. Their Changelog shows the 10.5.4 version is followed by the 11.0.0, which begs the question, what is different about the version we are getting here for free? At the end of their Changelog listing, there is a 10.5.5 version listed for the Mac platform. Since the change made was to resolve an issue on Macs, it is not clear how this 10.5.5 version on the PC side is different from its predecessor.

Constantin Florea I am sorry about the issues with the empty registration code in the receipt email. We are monitoring the support requests in the comments section on this page and in our email (notifybitsdujour.com) and we will send all receipt emails containing the registration information for those requests. Indeed, there is no way of telling when the resend receipt will be sent correctly when it is resent by the customer but if it doesn't work for you right away, you should try later on within 1 - 2 hours.

Stephen Brown Same as everyone else. I then tried to access support using the link that was provided above from the developer i.e. https://support.acebit.co...ets/Submit but that came up with a message saying server not found.

here's what I wrote to support

Hi,
I applied for a free activation key for Password Depot via BitsDuJour this morning (Sunday 25th February), but on receipt of the email, the activation code field remained empty. I reapplied but got the same problem. I then check the BitsDuJour forums and found that many others were experiencing the same issue. you posted an email address to contact you. My order number was as follows:
Order Number BDJ-STsmy4
Purchased 2/25/2018 1:46:46 PM
Purchased By Stephen Brown Whiterabbit-ukhotmail.co.uk
Regards
Stephen Brown

A S Just as an FYI - Doesn't appear to support Windows XP - only Vista & up due to an error message "TsiTaskDialog requires Windows Vista or later" which popped up during the database development.

I only use Windows XP to test products that claim to work under this OS and not as a suitable (for my needs) operating system.

Phil User Stephen Brown. Just a suggestion, but it's not a good idea to advertise your email account, full name, order number etc... all in a wide open area anyone can see. Best to be safe than sorry. If you disagree, then so be it...and I wish you luck, but I would take the safe option.
