1
davidroberts The same thing happens to me.

The instructions in the registration file tell me "copy the PasswordsPro.lic on your PasswordsProData directory overwriting the default trial PasswordsPro.lic file".
It tells me "license (.lic)... files .. are stored in C:\Users\\Documents\PasswordsProData." for Windows 7."

Is this the one I have to overwrite - and if it is, where do I get the file from to overwrite it?

If it is not, then where is it?

German Arduino About the 404 error may be a temporary failure of the site, we are working on this issue now, but the good new is that with this offer is not needed to register, in the zip file alreay exist the PasswordsPro.lic file (the full license) that you must use for unlock the full program.

David Roberts: When you install PasswordsPro from the installer provided (or downloaded from our page: http://www.passwordspro.c...oSetup.exe the program get installed with a trial license (PasswordsPro.lic file in PasswordsProData directory). When you register it (buy) we send a new license file that unlock the full program (in this case, the BitsDuJour promotion) the PasswordsPro.lic full license is in the provided zip file. You only need to replace the PasswordsPro.lic that was installed with this one. Let me know if you have more doubts. Alternatively you can check our FAQ page: http://www.passwordspro.c...t/faq.html.

Constantin Florea @David Roberts and @Kat Kat - Please use the download button inside the receipt email to download the zip file. Then unzip the contents of the zip file and there you should find the PasswordsPro.lic file and the installer called PasswordsProSetup.exe. First please install the application using the PasswordsProSetup.exe installer.

Then to register the application you need to copy PasswordsPro.lic into the appropriate folder:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents\PasswordsProData
Windows Vista, 7 and 8: C:\Users\\Documents\PasswordsProData.
overwriting the existing PasswordsPro.lic file found in there.

Then please start the application and it will appear as registered.

Stuart Clarke Slightly cumbersome registration process and not one I've ever seen before. Contrary to the developer's FAQ, the full license doesn't come with the email but inside the downloaded packet. Installation is quick and easy but then READ the small print carefully: don't blithely go ahead and copy and paste to the Program Files x86 folder because that'll still leave you with a 30 day trial. Instead, follow the developer's instructions and navigate to the My Documents Passwords Pro folder and paste there (pasting will over-write the existing license after a Windows alert.)

George Schimanski This seems to be exactly what I need, after unzipping and installing I still get the trial pop up. There are some instructiond where the registration code is, but it is not clear. Is there any possibility to simplify the licence access? At face value before using the product and based on screenshots and what I ghave seen, I probably would buy, but have to try it first. All I need is the license without having to go hunt for it. Any way I can get it just like all other programs I purchase, in a email?

0
Stuart Clarke @ G. Blensten: Aw c'mon. Be fair. As I pointed out earlier in this thread, it's a somewhat cumbersome way of doing things but really, Einsteinian it ain't:

1) Download the little file folder from the link provided in the email;

2) Unzip it. There you'll find the executable file *and* the 'full' license file.

3) Run the executable file to install. The app is now in 30-day trial mode.

4) Copy the license file that came in the zipped packet and then click on your My Documents folder in Windows Explorer (no need to mess about, navigating a way through C:User and all the rest of it) and there you'll see a PasswordsProData folder. Click to open then right-click paste. Windows will ask you if you wish to replace the existing file. Say yes.

5) And that's it.

About the only thing I don't like -- and this is a criticism that can be levelled at far too many software developers nowadays -- is the penchant for dropping folders into 'My Documents'. They're most often destinatiion folders for video, audio and pdf conversions which can generally be re-set in a program's preferences if you've the time immediately after installation. Not sure why today's program needs to add a folder to 'My Documents' though.

About the folder in My Documents is to avoid security issues and warnings in modern Windows versions if we use Program Files. Also to provide a central place for all the PasswordsPro files in a folder that the user can own with no problems.

@Jan Kuhn: You can use the same license in as many machines as you own.

Mario Balzic OK, so I unzipped the file, installed it, copied the appropriate license file, all OK. The application shows it is registered to "BitsDuJour Giveaway". I do not understand why other people had such problems.

There is a serious flaw in the program. In the "secure notes" window, the window size is FIXED. It would be better to allow at least full screen or to resize the window. AND there is no word wrap! No word wrapping means you have to scroll sideways for quite a ways to read a long paragraph. The sample entries from Wikipedia are a case on point. The lack of resize ability means it is almost impossible to edit an entry in place. I currently use a program called PINS (version 4.5 is the latest, dated 2003), available for free at:

http://www.mirekw.com/win.../pins.html

PINS has the ability to generate random passwords or passwords from a template. I use this feature of PINS frequently. It generates a list of 1 to 100 passwords, and then allows me to choose one which "looks" appealing. Also, my biggest pet peeve is this, portability. It does not appear from anything I've read that this program can be installed on an external USB disk or floppy and carried around as needed. PINS is completely portable since it makes NO use of the registry, only a local INI file. It fits on a single 1.2mb floppy. I use a USB memory stick. I also have a plain vanilla text editor on the same disk for editing text files that I later import into PINS. Last thoughts: A suggestion actually, in addition to adding word wrap and resize to the secure notes window, add the ability to duplicate an entry so all I have to change is the user ID and password to add a 2nd account at the same site. Oh, yes, why does it still have the "register" button active? Once a valid LIC file is obtained, why do you need a button to register/buy? And finally, how about build in some help for the menus and such? It doesn't do any good to use a URL if the internet is not available.

To sum up, I'll stick with PINS for now. If you change the secure notes to be resized and use word wrap, and have the ability to generate random passwords on demand or from a template, maybe I'll reconsider. Thanks for this offering anyway.

_*_ @German Arduino, from your post above where you tell Jack Huynh the program is easy to install in order to register; you should take an look at the postings of a number of potential customers who tried, given up, or found it very confusing.

Because you were part of the process in creating it and understand it, does not make it simple.

I would encourage you to look at the process from a first time users point of view, and not as someone that "gets it" already.

It took me three tries and only after reading and rereading the post informing to copy the file did I make it work.

It is clearly not an simple system when a person has to manually copy and paste part of a zip file they have to locate on their hard drive to a location that is not obvious.

I just wanted to point this out for future consideration of a truly simply registration system.

wts Registration is not that hard - just copy the correct file to the correct location as spelled out above. Another suggestion for finding the correct location: install a program like the free Everything search engine from voidtools.com and search for PasswordsPro.lic (or use any program that can search the C: drive quickly). Then you'll see exactly where the PasswordsPro.lic in the zip file must go to overlay that original file from the install. I have other programs from BDJ that required the same or similar.

This program is straightforward and does what it says it will and has a niche, but will have a tough time competing with the well established programs in the password management field. Almost all of the competition that I've tried are more elaborate than PasswordsPro and therefore have a steeper learning curve.

Arduino faces another problem other than the well-entrenched competition: there's another program on the market with the exact same name. It does something completely different (extracts passwords from hashes), but this naming issue may lead to problems down the road.

One of the reasons I check BDJ almost daily is that BDJ brings to our attention vetted programs from around the world. This is one of the too rare examples from Argentina, and South America in general. Other than one developer in Brazil, I don't recall other BDJ offerings from that part of the world.

Skip English Impossible to find the license and password, it would be so easy to just show the right password and all would be complete. even with Everything, all I get is that the file is empty, How can one be expected to have confidence in a program that is to protect your passwords when it is so difficult to get it to work because the registration process is so archaic that one is unable to locate and install it correctly, Nor will I endorse it in any way unless a more logical registration process.

Bill Williams Went to uninstall this program due to the vague and archaic license procedure. The program was not listed in Win 7 programs to uninstall so I used their own installer and got a message that some of the files could not be uninstalled but I could uninstall them manually. What files?

I then did a system restore which "hung" and didn't work. Password Pro acts like malware leaving files behind in obscure, unknown places. I don't trust the program or the company.

German Arduino @wts:Thanks for your opinions! About the name issue, yes exist another program with the same name that does different stuff, but we had the domain name (passwordspro.com), then wasn't in our thinking that will appear another program with the same name.

@Skip English: Our registration process relies in a file (a .lic file) more than in a randon number. It's an approach used by lot of products, for example Lotus Domino (to name a big one). Anyway we will try to improve it to make more use friendly.

About the use of the program you can check our videos:
https://www.youtube.com/w...xhDbDxxRFI
https://www.youtube.com/w...fHJ7pHpFoQ

@Bill Williams: The uninstaller should be listed in you control panel, look at the Editor "Arduino Software".
About the not erased data, are the user data (normally the PasswordsProData directory) where you have your passwords data files.
One may agree or not with our process, but we guarantee that we are not carrying malware in our installer, check it with any tool that you want. We do normally with Kaspersky and other well know brands.

@David Roberts: Could you explain better how you think that the process should be? Currently when the program is in trial mode, you get a button to go to the purchase page, if you buy it, you will receive the license by mail.
Might be better to have 2 buttons? A "buy" one to go to the purchase page and a "register" for install the license if you already received it?

@Daniel .: Anyway if you change your mind, count with my help to make the trial.

_*_ @Bill Williams, the program is listed in the Control Panel but it is not clear that it is PasswordsPro.

It is near the top of your list (well would have been since you already uninstalled) with the Name "3.5.0".

I would not have known if I had not read the Publisher field with "Arduino Software" listed.

I did an uninstall this way and it completely removed the software.

I use eWallet and SecureSafe Pro. eWallet is my program of choice as it covers so many areas for password protection. The one thing SecureSafe Pro has is the ability to place user files under its protection. I use a simple program called CryptBox for that.

I appreciate this offer and German Arduino interaction on Bits. I will look at the software again in the future.

The text file that came with that version of the programme should say something like “Unzip the licence file that comes as part of the Zipped File. Copy that licence file into one of the following folders depending on which version of Windows you have. When asked, say ‘Yes’ to overwrite the existing file.” And then include the information about where the licence fee is stored.

From my point of view, it would be a good idea if the Register button could then disappear. Not being a programmer, I don’t know how difficult that would be.

On the ‘About’ screen you have information about the icons. I had no problem with that. The you had a line about a ‘Trial Period’. I took that to mean that my copy was still a trial version and I didn’t even notice whether the licence was registered below. I had a look at WinZip which is distributed as trial versions. The ‘About’ screen says nothing about a trial version once it is registered. And the ‘Register’ page makes it quite clear whether it is a trial copy or a Registered copy and what needs to be done, by showing the key if it is registered.

I am currently using a trial version of SuperEasy BackUp. When I open it a window appears telling me that it is a 30 day trial copy and needs to be purchased. I assume that will no longer appear when I register it.

That sort of programming would get rid of the confusion I found.

Incidentally, I also agree with the person who said that a folder in the Documents library is not a good place to install files that are effectively System files like the licence.

I hope that all this is of use.

German Arduino @David Roberts: Thanks for your comments David. The splash screen counting the remaining trial period not longer appear in PasswordsPro if you activated the full license and yes, we will modify the About screen to avoid confusions. Thanks.

Constantin Florea @BDrJ - I am sorry but we do not know why some emails have this problem with receiving the receipt emails. In these cases we advise using another email address but you can always ask us (here in the comments section) or by email at notify@bitsdujour.com to resend you the receipt email and we will follow up.
