What are people saying about PhraseExpander

Harald Vogel Dear Andrea,

I'm a long time (since Direct Access 1) (only private) user of PhraseExpander Pro and would like to know if you also have a discount for renewing upgrade protection?

Thanks.

Andrea Nagar Hello Harald,
the offer here is for new licenses only. As a current user of Direct Access, you are eligible to discount pricing in upgrading to PhraseExpander.
You can find the pricing to upgrade at http://www.phraseexpander...r/upgrade/

If you are interesting in upgrading to PhraseExpander Standard, buying the upgrade will be 5$ cheaper for you.

If you want PhraseExpander Pro, buying a new license here would be cheaper for you.

Michael R. Looks like a very useful program... I haven't tried it yet, but I think I'll do in the next few days. In the meantime some questions arised:

If e.g. v4.0 arrives within a year, are all v4.x updates for free for todays buyers?

Can I configure PE in a way, that some abbreviations only apply to certain programs, e.g. to two defined text-programs I use, but not to a standard-editor, for which I would like to define other abbreviations?

Since I'm using the DOS-Box quite often, I am wondering, if I could define abbreviations context-dependent. So e.g. when having typed 'CD ' or 'MD' I would like to have other abbreviations being active than when having typed 'GREP '. So e.g. after having typed 'CD pr' and pressing a HotKey, can I define PE in a way that it lets me choose between the choices c:\mydata\private' and 'd:\mydata\private'?

So perhaps it would be nice to be able to create a set, e.g. a set of dirs (containing, among others, this 'pr' abbreviation from above) and apply this set to some applications (e.g. DOS-Box, file-requester, ...) so there would be some consistency between the abbreviations...

Andrea Nagar Hello Michael and thanks for your question.
Since you get 12 months of free upgrades when you buy your license, you'll get access to the new version 4 (that will be available in a few months for free).

Currently you can exclude certain application from detecting abbreviations: you will probably not need to set abbreviation to work only with a specific application as PhraseExpander can work using confirmation keys (pressing and releasing the SHIFT key).

When you a type, a suggestion is displayed on the screen and, if this refers to the phrase that you want, you can confirm it pressing the SHIFT key. (you can check out our SmartComplete works http://www.phraseexpander...tcomplete/)

You can group phrases into glossaries and groups and activate/deactivate them manually

Nelson Carvalho Sorry my English.
I use PhraseExpander since the previous version - 'Direct Access'. I can say that is a very useful program. The more I use it, the more I become 'dependent' it, because it speeds several times my work. The support is efficient. I recommend.

Michael R. Thanks for the fast answers.

Originally I meant, if updates are free even after this year. Are they?

So it's not possible to define different abbrev. for different applicatins? And, if I get it right - I didn't find anything in your answer and also not on the website - a context-sensitive set of abbreviations isn't possible too.

Will it be with v4?
Can you tell something about v4 and it's planned new features?
Feb 26 2013 at 1:15am Copy Link

Andrea Nagar Hi Michael the way updates is this: when you buy the license you get free upgrades (minor major) for 1 year (the length of your upgrade protection). After 1 year has passed you need to renew your upgrade protection to get access to new versions of the software.

Regarding your question you cannot define abbreviations that are active only in certain applications. We may add that to v.4 but it's not guaranteed.

We cannot disclose what will be available in v.4 at the moment.

Mary Wilson I really enjoy the program itself and my only complaint about the system itself is that I do not think the program is as stable. It has crased a few times and losses all of the data. Luckily, I have backup. In addition, I have a complaint dealing with the fact that company has changed its licensing practices. When I orginially purchased it from here, I only had to purchase one for my laptop and my main computer. When I went to renew threw the company, I had to purchase two licences. One for my main system and one for my laptop. When I upgraded, to current version I had to purchase one for my main system and one for my laptop. Now, you are saying it is good on three systems. Would you please make up your mind on licensing.

Andrea Nagar Hello Mary,
thanks for posting here. I'm sorry you were experiencing crashes on your system.
We had some stability issues in the past version which are fixed with the new v.3.7. Are you still having issues? If you do, please write me and I'd be happy to take care of that.

Regarding your licensing question: when you buy PhraseExpander, we offer the Extended license option (which is included in the BdJ offer here) that allows you to install it on up to 3 computers.

I checked you record and you actually purchased just one license (with the Extended option) that allows for installation on many PCs.

Hope this is helpful and thanks for posting your experience here.

Mary Wilson Let me try again.When I purchased this the last time from here, I got basically the same offer. What I did not find out till I had to renew the licence (one year later) is that when you renew you must renew each licence of the 3 individually. This means I would have to renew the primary licence and get two extension. Really wished I had known this when I orgininally purchased it as this caused a lot of problems as I paid for the license on my first upgrade and did not know until I tried to use my laptop that I had to purchase the extension. This took me time and extra money that I did not have. I thought about purchasing this offer as you stated that Version 4.0 is coming out soon but I do not want to be put in the same position as I did when I first purchased the program.

Andrea Nagar Thanks for the clarification Mary but it's not correct. As said, when you renew your upgrade protection, you have the option to add the extended license that will cover 3 PCs for a little extra (that is a fraction of the cost of a license).

Kelly Major Hello,

I tried one of the competing products recently and it was completely intolerant of any other software that monitored keystrokes. I have several such applications that run on my system together without and problems.

Before I install a trial can you provide any insight into compatibility or known incompatibilities with other software monitoring keyboard activity?

Thanks! - KEM
Feb 26 2013 at 2:43pm Copy Link
0
Andrea Nagar Hi Kelly,

The PhraseExpander detection engine has been designed not to interfere with other applications as all keyboard events are just passed back to the system unmodified.

If you are using other text expansion applications, you could experience some incorrect behavior if, for example, you assign the same abbreviation to different applications as they would be triggered at the same time.
So I'd suggest against having more than one text expander active at the same time (but if you do you need to be careful of not having them to be triggered by the exact same words).
Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for your reply. Due to a technical problem I was unable to reply earlier so I sent a reply to your support.

At the time I thought this special was yesterday and I was running out of time to test it out. That is on my agenda for today,

Zoran Paljevic GUYS!

YOU WILL LOOSE IF YOU DON'T HIT " I W A N T T H I S " !

:) Amazing.. I'm in huge mess doing "all" job myself, I have other occupations too and my life is hell.. Just realized that my life WAS mess, actually..

PhraseExpander is damn good tool! In just several hours I managed to load good third of my stuff, email templates, formatted text blocks with links and photos, my funny quotes I use in forums, many "packed" sentences I need.. Further I'm going to try my Html, jQuery, CSS and so on which are most tricky and if that works I'm the boss! Then I'll go fishing and hiking finally.

It's not that I've not tried this kind of software before, oh yes I tried many but it's about package as a whole. PhraseExtender is well built, it has friendly and simple interface and it's simple to use, most important, despite "super charged". With few letters you'll get discrete and tasty popup which can be single or list choice, hit SHIFT on hint and you're done, you can probably migrate "whole book" in a second.

This is a good deal guys, don't miss it.

PS. I know my comment looks like "loose weight" commercial but I see good reason to be so excited.

Thanks.

MK Looks good.
I've had a few of these types of programs, such as PhraseExpress but this is too restrictive in its licensing/ changing PCs.
I'm currently using Text Paster which is a neat and tidy little program, but it doesn't allow pasting of graphics.
PhraseExpander does allow the use of text and/ or graphics, so the 3-license Pro version is looking like the way to go (3 license option shows up after you click "Get This Deal").

Mark Johnson Can you set where the cursor should be left after text expansion?
For use in a programming environment, I would (for example) want it to allow some templated text on line one, a bracket on line two, a bracket on line 4, and then for the cursor to end up on line 3 indented beyond the surrounding brackets.

For example in the below all the text is an expansion, with the cursor ending up where the 'X' is. Something like type text, , bracket, bracket

blahblah()
{
X
}

Andrea Nagar @bvssunnydale You can copy the files placed in the installation folder into a USB stick and run it from there.

@Loco78. This special discounted offer is for new licenses of PhraseExpander

@Mark Johnson: sure, you can do something like this and the cursor will be positioned where X is.

blahblah()
{
{#cursor#}
}

The macro is available in Macro / Automation / Position cursor in text

MK If you are considering PhraseExpander, what might not be apparent straightaway is that if you use MS Word field codes a lot, PhraseExpander retains the formatting for the field code (use the Formatted Text option).
So I bought the Pro version yesterday, and now have it inserting formatted tables with 1-6 columns with a Table field code, in one easy move. When I insert the Table and refresh the Word doc, all the numbers for all the Tables I inserted are updated.
The same with EndNote field codes, so if there are docs you reference a lot, you could add its field code to PhraseExpander and use shortcut keys to insert them into the Word doc in one go. EndNote in Word will automatically re-number them where appropriate.
The potential is enormous, especially if you get into the Macros.
It's great when you discover helpful things that aren't immediately apparent :-)

Mark Johnson I notice in some editors that when you type a shortcut that causes the editor to lose focus, the shortcut typed is not completely removed.

For example, in Visual Studio 2013's editor, when I type a shortcut that causes another application to get the focus, most of the text I typed in VS2013 remains.

Example:
macro shortcut = 'goout', which executes
{#focus Outlook#}

The above example gives the focus to MS Outlook as desired, but of the letters 'goout' that were typed in VS2013, 'goo' still remains.

Is there a way to dependably get PhraseExpander to remove all of the typed letters when executing a shortcut?
