So, you're sitting at home working on your computer, and you need to transfer a file, web address, or even just a snippet of text to one of your other computers on the network. What do you do? You could try sending it over the network, and hope that your sharing and permissions settings are set up correctly. You could email it to yourself, logging into your email on one machine, logging out, and then logging into the destination machine. Or you could break out your flash drive and sneaker-net the stuff over to the other machine. Thrilling options, aren't they?

What if I told you that you could just copy it to your clipboard on one machine, then paste it from the clipboard on the other machine? Or, better yet, just drag and drop items between two completely different machines? Sounds awesome, yet implausible, right?

Simidude delivers exactly this functionality. Once you install Simidude, you'll be able to drag and drop files, folders, text, and HTML addresses between any of your computers, no matter if they're running Linux, Windows, or MacOS!

Simidude synchronizes your clipboards so items that you copy to one clipboard are instantly available on every other clipboard on the network. You can even use Simidude to drag files to and from Virtual Machine servers! Items can be dragged out of the Simidude window directly into applications to launch them. One of the most common situations involving machine-to-machine file transfers is with digital photos, and you'll be pleased to see that Simidude offers you a handy thumbnail image of every image file that you drag into it!

Simidude even maintains a running memory of the items that you've copied to the clipboard, making it easy to manage clipped items. For instance, if you've copied an item to the clipboard before, you don't have to do it again - just find it in your Simidude list and activate it. Plus, you can perform full-text searches through your clipboard items!

Oh, but there's one more thing -- Simidude is incredibly easy to use! It connects automatically to all running instances without the need to setup network connections, server ip addresses and the like.

James Evans @Torsten
This looks great and I'm going to purchase for our Windows machines but I have a (probably) dumb question:
Are there any plans to include the Android OS? -- if that is even possible.
Wife and I have Samsung Galaxy 10 tablets.

Torsten Uhlmann Hi James,
this is not a dumb question. I'm using iOS and Android myself, unfortunately I don't have the resources to port Simidude to either platform.
So, there are currently no plans for a mobile version.

Sorry,
Torsten.

Carlos Brito Ai,

Really, your software is very good. After the trial, I go to purchase.

Will be better if you include a key "to print". So, we select everything (a small text, for example) in a computer and print "only" these small text in other computer (or in the same).

And more if possible, to include a key to copy and paste a file in the disk, for example in the computerx/c/direcorym/file.htm and paste the file in the computerz/d/directoryp/file.htm.

Thanks.

CodeDog Torsten,

I've been using ClipDiary for a few years now and love it. But, I'd really like to have this functionality. I'm always finding myself saving a URL to a text file to use it on another computer on the home network, or text from an email, or a dozen other things.

My question is, will Simidude replace all the functionality I have now with ClipDiary (unlimited history, copy back to clipboard, paste as plain text, etc.)?

Or at a minimum would Simidude work alongside ClipDiary if it doesn't replace all it's features?

Thanks...

Torsten Uhlmann @CodeDog,

although I don't know ClipDiary I believe Simidude will not replace it. It does for instance not save the entire clip history so that it would be available after a reboot.

I'm pretty sure though Simidude will work along side other tools such as ClipDiary.

Please download the trial version from simidude.com and check out if it works for you.

Kind Regards,
Torsten.

Torsten Uhlmann Glad it works!

You need one license per Simidude network, no matter how many computers that user has connected.
So most people just need one license.

Regarding the drag to folder. There's an option in "Application Settings" to "Automatically download contents from remote computers". Normally the file is only transferred if you ask for it, to avoid copying large files unnecessarily across the network. If you enable this the file is copied immediately and dragging it to a folder should work.

Kind Regards,
Torsten.

Software Babe How does your software actually work? Do both PCs you are using to transfer files to and from be setup in SHARED mode on the network? Isn't this a security risk?

I have a wired/wireless home network (wired is for PCs and wireless is for tablets and phones). NONE of them are set up for shared access. IS THIS REQUIRED TO USE YOUR SOFTWARE?
Thanks in advance!

Torsten Uhlmann What do you mean by "Shared Access"?
If they are on the same network, they are found by a UDP broadcast signal (on port 10035), the Simidude instances then connect on a specified port (10034) using username and password.

You should not open your computers in a specific way, you might need to tell your firewall to allow incoming transfer on these ports.

Please note that Simidude does not come with any security build in, it is meant to be used in a private Lan or WLan where you trust the machines in your network. You should not use it on an open Wifi.

Thanks,
Torsten.

Software Babe So, after reading your User Manual, this product is a SERVER that goes out to your network and SCANS for another PC that has your software installed?

The following is in your manual:
"Automatic mode: After start Simidude will scan your local network for other running Simidude instances. If it finds any with the same group name and password (see preferences) it will establish a connection."

And, you can also hardcode the IP PC address into the router so your software can find it, am I correct?

I see some security issues with this software and I hope you can address this before I actually use your software.

1. When a wireless external source gets into your network, it would be able to access this server. It is not very hard to hack a router password UNLESS it is a complicated password.

2. If this is server software, then it takes over a PORT and I can see some complications with this.

So, can you address these concerns?

THANKS AGAIN!

Torsten Uhlmann Simidude acts both as a server and a client at the same time. There is no dedicated server instance. If you have 3 Simidudes running in your network, the all connect to each other.

Yes, every Simidude needs 2 ports be accessible, one for the UDP broadcast and one for the actual TCP transmission.

I'm not talking about router passwords. The username and password I'm talking about are set within Simidude. That way you can have 5 Simidudes running in one local network and connect 3 together and the other 2 in a different cluster...

You do not need to do anything with your router, neither will Simidude. Also, the ports that Simidude uses do NOT need to be open towards the internet, just within your network. Some PC firewalls block everything, these need to be taught to allow traffic on the Simidude ports. But do not open these ports towards the internet.

Adding a hard wired IP address in the Network Preferences is just for cases where the auto detection does not work, maybe because your Switch will forbid broadcast messages, or maybe because you use two IP segments in your private lan.

Does that help?

Torsten.

Chris Roy Jackson @ Software Babe

I think Torston's explanation (above) is very good, and I would like to add to that for your consideration as follows:

I hope that the comments will answer some of your security concerns:
You are correct regarding the Security of your LAN (Local Area Network)! You need to make sure that your Router Password AND your NETWORK passwords are BOTH very secure (Mix of upper & lower case letters, Numbers, and "special characters" [ie. @ # $ % & ] ).

Regarding a "wireless external source": they would be entering (attempting to) via the "NETWORK" NOT the Router, So they would need the "NETWORK password" (which should be VERY LONG (as you don't need to remember it... it should be set in the connection Properties on your PC.
ALSO, Most newer routers (for several years now) allow you to select "MAC" adresses for Access to the Network, and THAT is a pre-requisite for the password even being accepted.

As to your Network SHARING set up:
1. Turn on "Password Protected Sharing", and
2. Use "UserNames and Passwords" to connect between Computers on your Network.

In Windows 7 this is found at:
Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings

If you set up Sharing in this way... ONLY users with access (USER Accounts) on a given machine can ACCESS that machine (NOTE: for this system to work, you want to have UserNames & Passwords (for each persons account) to be the same on both "local" & "Target" computers.)
So, in the (immediately) above instance, ONLY someone who knows your EXACT UserName & Password and has set up the same Account information on ther computer and is logged into it can access anything on your machine!!!

Mark Johnson I just purchased this software after doing a trial of it on my home network and finding it very useful.

However, there is one thing that concerns me. It looks like the updates have been coming at about a one per year rate for the past couple of years. It doesn't look like very many new features have been added to the software in a long time. Looking in the forums, I see a lot of recommendations for updates to the software. Many of those update requests are as much as 3 years old, and the developer has remarked in the forum that they would be very useful additions. Yet I don't see these features being added, even though some of them would be extremely easy to add (example: right-click 'Send To' menu).

Is this product being actively developed? Why do years pass without requested features commented on by the developer being added?

Torsten Uhlmann Mark,

you are absolutely right! Many satisfied customers have given a number of very useful comments.

However I have to juggle the time I spent on my projects, and Simidude is currently on the back burner.

So, the best advice I can give you is to buy it only if the current version satisfies your needs, not because you are waiting for a future feature.

Kind Regards,
Torsten.

CodeDog Torsten, thanks for the answer to my question.

And as far as the security questions above, if your network, router, and access points are secure this program doesn't do anything to make them 'unsecure'...

John Hi Torsten,

- Do you have the portable edition for this application?
- Do you have plans to introduce progress bar during file/folder copy? (including speed rate), and potentially Pause/Start button?

Thanks

@Trial User: I do not have a portable version available, sorry. Also, please don't count on the progress bar being changed. Sorry.
