Jason Howard I found the claims that a slow pc will run faster by running SLOW-PCfighter to be misleading, promising results that in many cases will not eventuate to the extent the sales speak would have you believe.

Note the absence of any benchmarks, figures, comparisons or the indication of what type of speed up is typical under which circumstances. If you read the advertising of most registry cleaners, many promise incredible speed improvements, removal of errors, optimization and fine tuning. Many users don't understand enough about registry cleaners to know that the usual marketing terms are purposely vague and general in nature. After running the tools some would say "It seems a lot faster" but many more report problems with installed apps, new error messages, or worst case problems loading windows at all. In my experience it can be some time before I notice the errors - because I don't run every application and use every feature each day (eg loading clip art, or installing a patch weeks later to upgrade a program). I have had many customers over the years, who started all their problems with a registry cleaner.

Through my own experience and extensive testing of many other registry cleaners, and discussing with other users the claims of amazing improvements in speed never eventuate (from any registry cleaner) - except in the rare case of the deleted registry keys being related to a process that takes several seconds to resolve during boot - such as trying to establish invalid network connections, or loading or detecting incorrect devices drivers for hardware that might not be installed.

Again I restate - claiming that running a registry cleaner will cause your PC to run like "a new one" . Again all of the claims are never quantified or the conditions of success explained in technical detail.

In most cases the average user selecting all options in SLOW-PCfighter would actually break many applications. I took a typical PC that had been in use and ran the registry cleaner that is a part of CCleaner - and identified 2 unused file extensions. Now CCleaner is quite conservative and considered by many to be safe for this reason (It doesn't claim to be a better registry cleaner because it is prepared to delete a thousand extra registry keys than any other product). Then SLOW-PCfighter was run and listed 908 items that if the program is to be believed the PC would run faster if they were deleted.

I have found SLOW-PCfighter is just another registry cleaner (one that I would consider over zealous and likely to break many other applications - Adobe CS4 Design Premium for example).

The software needs to be much more selective in determining what keys should be deleted - at the moment the selection is far too broad and very likely to cripple a PC instead of "speeding it up".

From a user interface point of view - I didn't like the fact the dialogs that show the results couldn't be resized to fullscreen (so the results prior to deletion could be read easier - with one item per line and the registry keys lining up under each other).

The "ignore" feature is nice and should be in all registry cleaners - but for many users the output after a scan will be computer speak and confused many users will just select all the items displayed (trusting the software) and delete (hoping for the best).

For the novice to average user, this "easy to use" software is marketed towards, one registry key looks just as important as the next.

gpc 111 As with any registry cleaner make a restore point or a new image for your hard drive before using. Read through each line to carefully determine what will be deleted. I agree that most users, myself included, do not understand all of the registry entries. It pays to be cautious. That's where a good registry cleaner comes in handy. Most people have a program they have come to trust and rely on. That doesn't mean there's not a place for a new program. Keep an open mind.

Roger Thomasson Folks, let's keep this thread specific to SLOW-PCfighter.  The forum would be a more appropriate place for generic registry cleaner discussions.  In fact, I started a thread :-) http://www.bitsdujour.com/view/id=15442/ Thanks! -r
