What are people saying about Soda PDF 12

George Roch Is this the 2011 version (in the photo) or the 2012 version (in the trial download link)?

Ian Bacon Hi Mr. Roch,

This photo is our 2012 version for Soda PDF Professional. The trial link is for our latest version.

Ian Bacon Hi Mr. Rutherford,

This is a very good question. I do not know PDF-XChange that much but just by looking at the features I would have to say that our Professional version is very similar to their PDF-XChange Pro.

JW Mustang - from my own experience just now, that "optional extra" seems to be offered to you when completing the purchase of the program. ISTR it was an additional £19.95 There is also an opportunity to purchase a 'Maintenance Certificate' (for £15) entitling the recipient to the next version and intermediate revisions, as well as the opportunity to get the program sent to you on a CD (for an additional £9.95).

Ian Bacon Our version upgrade policy allows users to upgrade to a newer version which is up to 2 levels above. This means that if you have our 2011 version you can still use the upgrade version to get our new v5. If you have our 2010 you would then need to purchase a new license.

Rich OBrien I downloaded and tried the trial version of Soda PDF Pro 5.0.128. It instantly opened every pdf file without delay. Soda PDF would be worth having as a pdf viewer because of its impressive speed. And Soda PDF displayed perfectly every pdf
file I looked at.
However, if I buy Soda PDF, it will be because occasionally I find spelling errors and typos that I'd like to correct. For doing much editing, I much prefer using a word processor. It is too disconcerting to select words in column one only to have words in column two selected involuntarily.
I opened a pdf file I made which contains many tables and noted that while the tables, which contained both text and graphics, were displayed almost perfectly, Soda PDF has no Table Menu and no table tools. For example I could find no function for deleting a row or one cell of a table.

Software Guy A good deal on a full featured PDF editor. For a comparison of features - look here:
http://convert-pdf-softwa...views.com/
Notice that Soda PDF compares very favorably, has better print options, and at $25/$40 is a very good deal.
Some may hold out for the OCR version which is OK - I think the upgrade is about $20 from professional. But if you have a good OCR like ABBYY Finereader, or maybe purchased ReadIris earlier from BDJ - if you haven't then click 'I want it' here -
http://www.bitsdujour.com...ris-pro-14
just pass through the OCR (very fast) and edit through SodaPDF for a full featured solution.
BTW the standard version would likely meet the needs of most users.

What does ' Soda ' for? A brand or 4 letters initials of something?
Jan 29 2013 at 12:53pm Copy Link

Ian Bacon Hi Danny,

The license is good for life so no limit to the license. As for the upgrade, you can go from the Pro to the OCR but there will be a price to it. If you are taking about updates you will get them throughout the year if you set the software to receive them automatically. I hope this answers your question.

As for Soda it is the Brand name under which home users and corporations recognize our product.

Michael R. Is it possible to 'upgrade' within a version at a later time after this buy: Std to Pro, Pro to OCR and Std to OCR and if yes, what does this cost?

Do these programs also run in Win8?
Jul 4 2013 at 11:43pm Copy Link

Ian Bacon Hi Michael, yes it is possible to upgrade after. It can be done directly from the application. From std to Pro it would be $30, from Pro to OCR the upgrade cost is $20 and std to OCR is $50.

As for running on Win8 it is fully compatible.

Michael R. Thanks for the answer.

I suppose the prices you named are - as asked - the regular prices.

The fineprint says 'This promotion can be used to upgrade or extend an existing license'.

Currently I already own Soda5 Std.
So it's quite a temptation to get today's discount of 50% to be able to upgrade to the Pro-Version. But how can I do that? When going to Activate-Upgrade from within Soda Std, I just get the regular prices (and with $47,14 even a higher ones that you stated above), not the expected discounted one ($15)

So, how can I do that?

Stefan Hauber Some months ago, I found an email in my in-box about a webinar about an exclusive preview of Soda 8.

Now this purchase is v7. So, is v8 free for today's buyers?

Fineprint says, that this opportunity today is also for upgrading. How does this work and what is discount, if a former buyer v6 wants to upgrade?

If a former purchase was made with OCR-included, can this old-version module also be applied for today's v7 purchase (and also for v8, ...) or needs a v7,v8-user purchase a separate v7,v8-OCR-module to use OCR?

Thank you.

disenchanted I'll give it a try.
My last Pro version of any PDF program like this was Nitro PDF Pro.
I had bought version 6 of nitro pdf Pro when Newegg cleared them out on sale, at like $19.99.
Now many places like Nitro pdf, they are getting away from the retail box edition and everything is downloads. Great for their bottom line, not mine though.

As long Soda PDF's program can:
1. create PDF, regular and password encrypted
2, convert to word . excel. or PowerPoint
3. hopefully work with a scanner and create PDFs via a scanned in doc
Then It'll work for me.

Dippy Dawg A while back they said they were going to change "Transfer of a license to another owned computer is not allowed." I still see it in the Fine Print. I do not see any vendor replies today promoting their product or answering questions. They have been talking about version 8 for a long while and this is special is for version 7 which does not support windows 10, or their website does not reflect windows 10 compatible. So maybe version 8 will support windows 10, since vendor has been absent and not replying I don't know if I get version 7 today will it include a free update to version 8??? So I buy V7 today and in a month or two they release version 8 and will probably not give much of a discount to upgrade. I see on their website they are migrating to the "subscription model" . I did noticed on website you can transfer to another computer but your have to contact them. Who knows how long it will take for them to reply to that request.

I'm out! They might have a great product but with One install and per PC and their lack of a representative here to answer questions, why would I get this.....

disenchanted Gwynne,
Thanks for mentioning the subscription model change. '
I was almost going to buy another license.

I loathe the annual Subscription model for almost** any consumer software, except labor intensive software like AV** and anti-malware**. [If any vendor in AV doesn't respond to threats ASAP then their AV protection becomes worthless. Such support does cost money as it requires 24/7/365 overhead and a subscription model makes sense.].

Otherwise the normal software model, that lets a piece of software continue to run indefinitely, seems to be the best.
Like Office, music creation, backup-restore, picture viewers, etc

IF newer versions with newer features come out then great. I buy the new version and upgrade because I want to.
BUT if I don't' need the extra bells and whistles; I don't.

Too funny I also purchased PDF Nitro 6 from Newegg. I really liked it and thought it was a good option rather then Adobe. I even got PDF Nitro 8 from Bitsdujour. The only real problem I have with PDF Nitro is I think it is still to expensive, call me cheap. At least PDF Nitro lets you install it on two PC or PC and laptop and transfer of a license to another owned computer is allowed.
There are several reasons why I do not Like the "Subscription model"... One is if I buy a 1 year subscription and then the next year they decide to 3x the subscription cost I am stuck paying the outrageous price or and I am back to looking for and alternate program. i prefer to buy the program and if it meets my needs I might not upgrade it for 2-3 years or if I feel I need some of the new features then I will upgrade and by owning the program I can take my time looking for a replacement and not have to worry about I have "X" amount of days before my Subscription ends and I am stuck with no program to use while I search for an alternate or upgrade.

You can definitely Drag & Drop multiple files such as Word, PPT, Excel, etc... into Soda PDF and the software will automatically convert the file to PDF form. However the files themselves will not automatically be combined, to do so simply select the "Combine Files" option in the Create tab.

I hope this helps although if you have any further questions please feel free to message us at infosodapdf.com we are always happy to help!

William W. Geertsema Hello,
I have a question regarding the OCR module for Soda PDF 8 PRO..
I originally purchased Soda PDF version 8.051.26452 PRO, with unlimited use (i.e. no time limit).
I subsequently updated to version 8.051.26506 PRO, and recently to version 8.1.12.29405 32-bit PRO; the original license covered those updates.
When I purchased, there did not appear to be an OCR module.
Some time later, that module apparently became available, as witness the offer provided yesterday by a connection to your site from within the program (when attempting to use the OCR module).
The offer is for an upgrade to Soda PDF PRO consisting of the OCR module, for the price of € 49.00 (Save € 40.00).
When I press the "UPGRADE" key, however, I am directed to a page only dealing with your subscription model.
Please let me know how I can obtain the OCR module upgrade to version 8 PRO (delivery, payment).

There are free OCR solutions available, but often free options lack the interface or the functionality to match the experience.

Our OCR engines lets you run custom scans, deciding what part of the images you want to scan. You also get the benefit of working on your files in the same place unlocking all of the additional editing features.

Laurie Nelson I need clarification about editing. That's the one thing I can't find in a Home version for people like me who only need it once or twice a month. Does "editing" mean I can only change text that is already in the PDF or can I also add text? It looks like I can only add page elements--not text. For instance, I occasionally need to print a map; on the map I want to add the location, phone number, hours open, etc. Does SodaPDF allow me to add text?

Aldo Marchesini The first thing I do not like is a timely supply that expires and is immediately renewed. It's not serious.
The second thing is the offer of installing third-party software during installation. You can avoid installing these software but it would be better not to even propose these installations!
I do not like your program. I do not like the possibility of resetting the license only twice a year. I do not like invasive activation option features unavailable (if a feature does not exist do not show the option). I do not like the evidence of the price list of additional features (It is not a fast food menu!)
Missing OCR is a big limit. Home users can not use OCR, obviously they have not this need. Functionality is offered at a high price. In addition, the annual / definitive features are unclear. The final price to buying all the options is very high. I'm not happy with the my purchase (Premium licence).

I'm a student, so I can't afford yearly fees. I sometimes buy a new app and upgrade depending on the price. I needed the premium version for its additional features.

Let's cross finger my premium license won't end in 1 year.

Constantin Florea @Benjamin User, This promotion runs with an e-Commerce which is different from our own (BitsDuJour's) e-Commerce. This means that the sales for this promotion will appear in the Off-Site section of your Purchases page:
http://www.bitsdujour.com.../purchases

I just searched for "Soda PDF" in your Purchases page and found it toward the end of the page.

Cram User Defo not a lifetime offer, it's an annual subscription!!!
Careful if you sign up for this, they're out to pocket your Dollar$.
Check out the payment page, on the left side lower down, below '100% Secure Transaction', it says:
"Your plan will renew automatically on your annual renewal date, until you cancel your plan as per our Terms of Service."
Not good, pretending to be an offer, and really just sneaking into your wallet with a repeating annual payment!!!

Ed Ward Thank you, Ian, for confirming that subscription to Premium includes access to Soda PDF Anywhere. I've reached out to Soda tech support on two questions below but am still confused. I subscribed to Soda PDF Home in 2016; was charged for renewal of annual Home license in Oct. 2017; upgraded from Home to Soda PDF Premium 9 in Jan. 2018. So I now have licenses for two of your products - was advised by Soda tech support that I should keep both so that I would have access to Soda PDF Premium 10. Two questions:
1) Having purchased Soda PDF Premium, is there any need to subscribe to Home? I wouldn't think so but again your Tech support recommended that I keep both. Unclear why.
2) For individuals like myself who purchased Sofa PDF 9 just 8 months ago, is there an automatic upgrade? If not, what is the cost to upgrade to 10? In general, what is your upgrade policy and cost for new releases?
3) Can Soda PDF Anywhere be set as the "default" reader for reading/viewing PDFs in Chrome online?

Thank you for clarifying. I'm sure others will want to select the plan that best suits their needs.

Steven Avery I just downloaded the Desktop program and it gives me a 14-day trial which says Soda PDF Business. Is this the same as the Soda PDF 10 Premium, and thus includes an OCR feature? (I usually use Abbyy Screenshot or Finereader for OCR)

It is an interesting product, I am not usually a fan of the soft color style and the ribbons, but the design itself and features look very good.

Whether I can determine in 15 minutes whether I want to make a $45 purchase is not likely, however. I see the website has some Sept 75% off, but that is for the subscription product? I'm not really sure why I would want to pay yearly, if my work is mostly desktop and you still have reasonable Dropbox type connections and a Chrome add-on?

Can I place on laptop and desktop?

One review (favorable, as most are) said you lacked export to Epub. Is there a workaround that works well, or are you going that route soon?

Thanks!

styrobrain Lulu Software,

the current BDJ Fine Print states "After you purchase Soda PDF 11 it may be used indefinitely." Yet your shop page states that a subscription auto-renews. What kind of license is this, perpetual or subscription?

What are currently the options to add OCR capabilities to either of the licenses on sale?

Stephen Kreyling What is the life span of the version being sold. I have had version of the past and things were discontinued. How many years will updates be available with the purchase?
Nov 8 2019 at 8:48am Copy Link

Ian Bacon Hi Stephen !

Since this is a perpetual license, rest assured the life span is forever. This would mean that updates won't be available to this version due to the nature of the license. However, customer support is available to you at all times if ever you need any help, given that it isn't a bug issue. If you wish to have regular updates, you can certainly purchase a yearly subscription with SodaPDF.

Which version did you previously purchase?

Let us know if you have any additional questions.

Ian Bacon Hi !

Thank you for your question.

Standard has the essential features, such as view, convert, edit and insert & extract pages. For the Pro version, in addition to the essential features, you also have OCR search, 20-pack e-sign, and batch (Create, convert, crop, add watermarks, headers, footers, password security and plenty more to many documents at once.)

You can check out the differences between our versions here : https://www.sodapdf.com/pricing/

HJ User As far as i could find, your web site has only one reference to metadata. It states that the pro and business versions can "Sanitize and remove metadata from document."

1. Can metadata be added?
2. Can additional metadata fields be added?
3. Can the metadata fields be modified in bulk?
4. Will the program permit pdfs to be searched for the particular metadata words or phrases, e.g. list all pdfs that include "Jones" in a metadata field.

Ian Bacon Hi !

Thanks for your questions.
1) 2) Can you contextualize your question a little more? What do you want to add?
3) We can remove meta-data in bulk
4) This is not currently in-app and I am not sure it makes sense for searching a single PDF but for multiple PDFs it could be very helpful

Thanks !

slm I am a little confused about whether Soda PDF 12 in the BDJ special is the same as the product on your website. "The Fine Print" says this about the product offered here: "After you purchase Soda PDF 12 it may be used indefinitely." The Standard and Pro products on your website seem to be subscriptions, either per month or per year. Are the Standard and Pro, Soda PDF 12 products offered here actually subscriptions?

HJ User @ian Bacon

PDFs have standard background filed into which the user can put information, i.e., metadata. Assume I have 10,000 pdfs, spread across 1000 client files. I would like to be able to the metadata:

1. the client name or account number; - I would like to do this by including that name or number in the metadata of all pdf files that are in that client's folder.
2. One or more categories (e.g. medical, legal, finance, aaa, bbb).

Once that is done, I would like to be able to search across all pdfs for the client name or number, as found in the metadata. I would also like to search across all pdfs for one or more categories, as found in the metadata. So, I could search for category aaa, across the files of many clients.

Masood Khan To start with BitsDuJour's offer was an offer to the Life Time version. Based on the message from Sim, it was changed to the subscription version. I am very disappointed. I have version 11 of the SodaPDF Desktop Pro and wanted to upgrade to version 12, but you changed it to the subscription version. On your website, there are both versions, though it is hard to find the LifeTime version, subscription version is promoted heavily. Please change it back to the LifeTime License.

Ian Bacon Hi HJ User!

Thank you for the clarification of your previous questions!

1) You can change the metadata of your PDF files. Here are the options you can modify: Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords.

2) The metadata cannot be changed for a batch of files at once, you can only change it for each file individually.

3) The data from those fields is not searchable.

Thanks!

Ian Bacon Hi Masood Khan!

Thank you for sharing your feedback!

I am sorry, it seems that Bitsdujour has forgotten to update the description of the license type.

Please note that we no longer provide Perpetual licenses, they are available only for the Business version now.

This was a corporate decision about moving our products to a subscription model.

Thanks!

Ian Bacon Hi Cary Adams!

Thank you for sharing your feedback!

I understand that a license type can be an important factor to consider before purchasing a license. I would love to mention that Soda PDF subscription-based licenses allow installation on 3 computers, the online version that can be accessed from different devices such as smartphones or Linux/macOS computers, and they provide free upgrades to the next versions once they are released.

Have a great day!
