Brad Hello,
I own multiple products from this company. I bought the software as bundled product purchase outside BitsDJour. Anyone who buys these companies products should be prepared for a very intrusive unforgiving activation system with their software.

This company as noted uses hardware based activation. I would like to add that I feel it is a poorly run or designed system. I also would add Sothink seems very paranoid in managing these activation on their customers computers. I have had the products for over a year and I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that any minor hardware configuration change to your computer will trigger the need for you to reactivate the software again. So if I hook-up and/or disconnect a hard drive, or change the video card in your system, or make any other hardware change you will be required to reactivate the software again. What is worse is if you install a minor update to the software like moving from Ex. (ver. 3.1 to 3.2) you will also be required to reactivate the software again, that is ridiculous in my book.

The result is that I have received a total of 6 specific activation warnings over the last 9 months telling me that I have use up one of my 3 opportunities for activating the product. So I need to go find my serial number and then copy and paste the serial number again into the activation screen. Then once it activates again here comes another email which I feel is an accusatory warning to not activate the software on more than one computer and that I only have two chances left for activation.

I have never use the product on more than one computer my Gateway Desktop system, and it really frosts me when they send out this form letter which from my perspective half infers I am breaking the rules and that ohhh, better look out I only have two activation's left. All I am saying is just be prepared for what I called in one of my emails back to company support "Activation Hell” You would think that they might have built into their software the capability to activate and deactivate the software so that I end-user has some control over this process. But it is not available.
Here is a copy of the multiple responses you will receive from SoThink if you need to re-activate the product if you add an extra hard drive or add some RAM to your machine. If you don’t mind activating the software half-a –dozen times through the year then by all means buy the software.

As an aside I do have three other software products which use hardware based activation and I have never had any issue whatsoever with the need to reactivate.

By the way I have not run into any issue with SoThink failing tothem not increasing my activation, it for me is just the annoyance factor.

Here is a copy of the form letter you will receive every time you need to activate the software.

Subject: Sothink Reminder for Activation Chance(s) Left with Sothink Video Converter

Dear registered user xxxxxxxxxxxtsbcglobal.net,

When you activated Sothink Video Converter, we found that the hardware configuration of your computer was changed. Now you have 2 chances left for activation.

The situation happens if you did one of the operations below:

1. Change the hardware of your computer;
2. Upgrade/reinstall your Operating System;

(For the above 2 situations, you could feel free to continue using the program.)

3. Transfer the program from one computer to another one;
4. Install the program on more than ONE computer.

(As to situation 3rd and 4th, please uninstall Sothink program from your other computer(s) to avoid
your key from being deactivated automatically.)

If you have any question, please feel free to contact us at supportsothink.com.

Thanks very much for your support!

Albert C. I don't buy hard-DRM'ed software anymore. Too bad because there are really nice pieces of soft out there but those activation systems with very limited perspective are a real PITA. I don't understand how companies with such aggressive protection systems still survive, because there are others that have lasted tons of years and never use such an unfriendly protection system. My 2 cents only! ^_^

_*_ Brad, thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed message. I am also another that seeks to avoid highly intrusive DRM laden software. Thanks again as your post, I am sure will help others in their buying decision.

Lawrence Lichtmann Thanks for posting, Brad. I was going to buy this product, but I won't waste money, time, or grief on an activation-controlled product, particularly one I'm likely to use only once in a while. Perhaps Bits du Jour would like to help its customers by warning them when a piece of offered software relies on hardware-based activation?

Keith Norton I activated yesterday's Sothink product (Web Video Downloader) and found the process to be completely painless. I'm not interested in this Logo Maker software but I just don't see why the company is being bashed for wanting the software to be registered. At the prices being offered on BDJ you get to try out some great stuff cheaply (and in most cases free for a brief time). Notice the naysayers above are not bashing the software itself, just the activation.

Thanks guys, certainly not trying to discourage sales for this company, because the products I do use from SoThink actually work quite well.

Still I am with all of you on this hardware activation, the developers or owners of this software should cut this out of their software. I think they would see an exponential growth occur in their sales. But as it is, if you alienate your customers with this activation scheme, and then on top of it, you frost the cake with a terse email, then It's simply cause and effect. I think you all would agree, the facts are clear if you have a dissatisfied customer, that customer is going to tell ten other people about the experience. The damage is self-inflicted as far as I am concerned.

This is why I appreciate buying though BitsDuJour. I am getting the benefit of multiple perspectives or opinions. Generally from people who either have tried the product, or have recently downloaded such and from their unique experience or world view they ask the developer a question I hadn't even considered. So armed with this bevy of subjective information, coupled with my own experience I feel I'm way ahead of the curve in my buying decision.

Because as we all know with BitsDuJour.........its "tick tock".

Regards from Northern California, Brad

D Rex I do not see the ability to export to a vector graphic format. This concerns me as I want to be able to scale the logo to larger or smaller sizes as needed for print layouts from marketing collateral to business cards. Does anyone know if the program can create vector based file export?
