Virus Scan for Stepsy Personal Pro

MK This looked promising. I write manuals based on walk-throughs of 3D CAD models. This could help plan procedures whilst capturing step-by-step screenshots from the model. Or so I thought.
"Press start trial button to start using the application!" it begins. But the "Start trial" button does nothing. You need to click one of the other buttons shown and then okay after this to get to a screen asking you to select another button to start.
Then when I try to capture anything, it crashes with "StepShot.UI has stopped working". I use Windows 7, fully updated.
Anyway, a promising idea - so I'm off to see if some other developer does something similar.

Alex Rem Dear M K.
We are glad to see that you like the application idea. This is the main reason why we decided to start its development.
As for this screen:
"Press start trial button to start using the application!"
It is the limitation in the demo version. This is a little bit annoying, but it wont be shown after license is bought.

Our application is sertified to work with Windows 7. So this message is also disturbing us very much:
"Then when I try to capture anything, it crashes with "StepShot.UI has stopped working". I use Windows 7, fully updated."
We would like to know if this is a problem that occurs every time you start? Please, try reinstalling the app.
We will be waiting for your response.
In case of any problems with your desktop, you'll receive a direct manager, who will contact you and get to know what is the problem.
This is the first year the StepShot is on the market. So you are geting the lifetime updates in case of any problems inside this version.

MK Okay - I originally tried it on a netbook (Windows 7 32 bit) and it fell over.
But I've re-tried it on my desktop (Windows 7 64 bit) and it all works fine, and I like it very much.
Three questions:
1. The Alt+PrntScrn is used to capture the active window. If the active window has a drop-down menu you also want to capture, hitting the Alt key will cause the menu to disappear. Is there a way around this?
2. Is there a way of re-ordering the History Line? If I have 3 entries on the History Line called A,B,C, can I re-arrange them to be B,A,C or whatever?
3. Is there a way of copying an entry on the History Line and pasting it as a new entry elsewhere on the History Line?

Alex Rem Dear M K.
We are glad that you like it.
There are several possibilities to capture dropdown.
1. Use PrtScrn hotkey and then select the region with the dropdown.
2. Switch to Active Window Capture mode (or full screen capture mode) and then do the needed procedure. This will capture your every mouse click. You should hold Ctrl btn during recording in order not to to capture concreate screen.
Items reordering and duplication are now in the development stage, as the where requested by a few other customers, but not available in latest version. As we said, if you buy the product we will provide you with updates, that will include needed functions.

Stephane M Hello,

Could you clarify the policy?
It says "Product purchase allows use for 1 month.", I guess it is a typo.
And it also says no discounts to future versions, is that correct?

Thank you.

If you buy our software during first year distribution
1. You'll get all the lifetime updates for this application. So you don't need discount for future versions.
2. 1 month is the trial period for the application.
Please, tell me where did you find this: "Product purchase allows use for 1 month."?

Stephane M Thank you Oleksandr!

The "Product purchase allows use for 1 month." statement is on this board on the top right under the "I want this" and "Download" buttons where you can see details about the product like platforms, policy, links, ...

I think it would have been good to mention the terms of the lifetime license in this policy. The policy as described on this board does not seem to reflect the current policy for your software or it is not clear.

Thanks.

S B This looks like a very nice application.

I like the direct simple way that StepShot captures, edits, and prepares/publishes a "user story" as actually implemented. This is what great documentation--and especially "quick start" documents--are built upon.

For software under development, StepShot will also capture user's mistakes and false starts in a much more compact way than, say, Camtasia Studio's screen recording (though Camtasia is a wonderful product).

May I suggest adding the ability to capture and display a timestamp (and time differences, too) with each captured image to be used in evaluating the speed and pace of the user's experience. (a periodic screen capture would help, too)

There is a good video on the site: stepshot.net/help.

I'm just a little concerned about the app's stability, but I hope that with more users and the professionalism of its developers the reported problems will disappear.

-- -- --
The stated BDJ Policy *really* needs correcting. As written, it sounds problematic for me. As stated on the StepShot site, stepshot.net/buy, the license is good:

"Personal license. In practice it essentially means that you ("you" as in the individual end-user of the software, but not as an entity) can use StepShot after buying the key, and applying it on one or more of the computers you use at home, school and/or work.
Please note that the Personal License only applies to you as an individual."

Also, thank you Mr Oleksandr Reminnyi for your responsiveness and candor--it's a mark of professionalism.

I'm looking forward to purchasing at least one license.

As for the licensing, there are some restrictions in the bitsdojour framework. As I said earlier, if you buy the product on its first promotion year (till the end of 2010), you'll the get lifetime updates. This is true for this app version (that can be called Standart, because Professional version is also planned. But any way, even on update to Professional we will be able to afford pretty discounts for our customers).
As for suggestions - yes, we are trying to make the same as requested by our customers.

Thank you for your update.
Yes, this issue is known at the second but I quarantee that there are no any viruses inside. The question is how msi installer package is placed inside exe package. This issue is not reported by most other antiviruses.
We can handle this problem two ways:
1. Disable ESET during installation (not really user friendly)
2. Download msi package from our site directly http://www.stepshot.net/d...epShot.msi
The msi is the same installer. But most distributing sites prefer exe installers, so that is why we had to pack our msi into exe.

s b I'm nor sure that I'm happy with/trust your processing company, "PayPro Global" in Ukraine.

I just purchased a license. The processing company, PayPro Global, has a weak SSL (my utility says it is "not secure" and "should not be used to exchange sensitive information") (they do have a current Thawte certificate, but their server does not support secure TLS renegotiation). Further, I couldn't find their privacy policy, and how they will be using and protecting personal information.

They apparently had a problem with my phone number, so someone called me at nearly 10PM my time so they could approve the order. (they'd already sent me two emails)

The brusque woman who called ("I need to know if you placed an order!") was very reluctant to identify herself and her company, and would not identify her city (only "Ukraine").

I hope they are giving you a great rate, though things my not be different where you are, may I suggest that for at least North American sales you use a better company which is also more familiar with our culture.

Here is some info about your personal information protection (I received this info from their support). You should not worry about your personal data.
Policy: https://www.payproglobal....Policy.pdf

PayPro is compliant with PCI Security Standard and audited daily for required security.
PayPro is PCI DSS Certified (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard). PCI DSS is the most important security standard for the card payment industry. All transactions are made using a SSL connection (128 bytes) provided by Thawte (Thawte SSL Certificate). The data sent from your browser to PayPro servers is always encrypted. PayPro servers are certified McAfee Secure and scanned daily by ScanAlert for known vulnerabilities.
PayPro never stores your customer's credit card information, nor shares it with any third parties.
PayPro system is highly protected against brute force password attacks as it accepts only private key connections.

I wouldn't say that a privacy policy is useless by any means. After all, it's a legally binding acknowledgement of corporate liability that leaves the door wide open for lawsuits if that trust is in fact breached :-)

a) Only if a company is legit - it could be a front for criminal activity
b) What chance does an individual have of suing a foreign company in a company's jurisdiction? I'd have enough trouble suing a UK company (that's where I live). It would be impossible/impractical to do that for a foreign entity.

All very valid points which I would never dispute :-)

My point is simply that for a legitimate company wishing to do legitimate business, the privacy policy carries very real legal weight.

For my part (as a consumer), I'd rather have them in place than not!

Also, I use Snagit to take screen captures and the editing software built into it to modify images.

Sorry, but at the second we do not support integration with outer applications. The idea was to build in all the functions together in order to create the simple manual(So you capture-edit-add text -export to Word). Watch quick start video here: http://stepshot.net/help/
Otherwise, if you want to paste the screens from outer application maybe you should consider only Snagit + Word (adding annotations in the word directly).

Charlie N I puchased a copy and it installed easily on Win/7.

But as I entered the license key it returned the fillowing message which is inconsistent with the postings here on Bits.

"Your license is a personal license (single computer instance).
It is valid for 90 months after the creation date - get support and updates during this period.
The creation date: 29, Apr, 2011.
You've purchased 1 copies of this license.
So you are able to install our product with this license on 1 computers. "

I find this a bit disturbing from Bits (excuse the pun) where my past purchases have had great clarity in terms of purchasing. But I accept your word that thjis is a perpetual license of the Sandard Edition of the Product (not the future Pro version).
Thx,
Charlie

Large discount is to increase the customers database, there is no idea to take your money for updates.

And also, I'm stable with StepShot on BDJ, so be sure you'll be able to get next version discount back here!

bob roos This is one slick program. I really like the magnifier usage. That is a great idea for making smaller shots of sections of large without having to crop all the time. I had never used the magnifier before. It took some getting used to so it would undock and resize. It doesn't use the usual cursor indication (on Win 7 anyway) of the split arrow for resizing.

I do a lot of testing and StepShot would prove very useful for documenting steps leading to a problem. It could even be running in the background IN CASE there was a problem. Is there a limit to the number of captures?

@bob roos
Yeah, as far as I'm a software developer, I understand the advance of capturing the screenshots for testing. That is why you have option on the Misc tab - that allows you to limit the number of taken screenshots. So for example, you need to save the last 40 steps. You set this setting, and - 41 screenshot will always delete 1'st one, and you will only have the latest 40 steps in history.
There is no visible limit for taking screenshots. If you have strong PC you are able to take a few thousands of them without significant performance hit. But for me I'd prefer limiting.

I'm not very familiar with ScreenSteps. What I can guess is that ScreenSteps more for lessons creation, and mine offers such features as software testing (described in previous post), separate screenshots processing (so you can work with it as with screenshots tracking/ editing/ sharing software).

Also there is some difference in pricing. They are my competitors, and due to that fact I respect them. I developed my app without a glimpse on their product, so you should better compare by yourself.

@bob roos
Magnifier is a standard Win application. It's good in case we are capturing full screen or active window and the magnifier is above that window. So the main advantage - it can highlight some points, but is not used as a separate mode.

Sep 5 2011 at 8:55am Copy Link

Alex Rem Dear Jean!
Thank you for your choice!
Yeah, it can be removed if you will use some tool like Adobe Acrobat.
It won't violate the license, but I'd prefer if that notice would stay there.
It's the only link to original app in registered version, and I'd say it's not significant.

Jean Sibe Hello Oleksandr, I would be happy to see this an option for registered users.

If not, then setting where I could choose where to put watermark, in the end or beginning of the document.

It's really not an issue, most likely my personal principle how I feel about the software what I have purchased :) I don't like if my AntiVirus software is putting own signature in the end.

Or wouldn't like if every e-mail I wrote, would say "Sent from Outlook 2010" or every document I create, "Created using Word 2010", I think you get the idea :)

bob roos I don't particularly like the automatic crop because the important areas are not always around the cursor in the same way. Also, how do I know that the size I set up in advance will be OK? And centered around the cursor is not always what I want.

I can crop each image in an external editor, but that is turning out to be a bit of a task for 100 images. How about adding a crop tool to the Edit History Item tool bag? Or did I miss it? The selection lines won't stay on the screen so I don't know what I can do with that (ie copy and paste).

Sep 5 2011 at 10:25am Copy Link

0

bob roos I get it now. I was trying to select an area of the underlying image and that is not the purpose of select tool. It only selects other tools sitting on top of the image.

yes, this definitely needs a way to crop/select parts of the image. I would be happy just to be able to use the clipboard so that I could select a section of the image, copy it to the clipboard and paste it back replacing the current image. I am afraid that I assumed this capability already in there.

bob roos Screen capture on mouse down vs mouse up.

It appears that SS captures on mouse down. I tried to capture after a scroll to the bottom and I got the start of the scroll where I clicked to grab the slider, but I didn't get the shot at the end (the one I really wanted) when the scroll was complete. I would have to click again to grab that. Now that I know that I will (hopefully always remember to do that).

Might I suggest an option that says if mouse down is not followed by mouse up in .xxx seconds then capture again on mouse up? That will also help illustrate drag and drop and select an area.

Charlotte Sinclaire I'm confused -- I don't know what to do with the magnifier or how to use it. But my BIGGER concerns are as folows:

1) The screenshots I'm taking are indistinct (I'm trying to capture some InDesign functions for tutorials in my office; this would be SUCH a big help if it works).

The results exports better to PDF than to RTF (which I then view in Word; I assume you cannot export directly to Word, but only via RTF...?), but I'd prefer RTF over PDF, so that I can control page breaks, add additional notation, etc.

But I can't use the results as they are showing up now because they are such low resolution. I thought you were supposed to be able to set your resolution for captures, but I cannot find any place to do that.

2) I set the # of window captures to 200, just to be on the safe side, while I did my test (not knowing how many clicks I'd need), but sometimes the captures stop at 6, sometimes at 16, sometimes at 10 -- I have no idea why. I've never gotten a complete capture of a complete procedure yet.

Are the above #1 and #2 problems just limits of trying out? The downloaded trial is the Express version. Are there other functions that get unlocked in the full version? Is that what is being sold here in Bits du Jour today? Hope you answer these questions rapidly, as I don't want to miss the op to buy if your answers are encouraging! Thanks much!

Sep 5 2011 at 1:30pm Copy Link

0

Alex Rem 1. The screens you are taking do have really good resolution in PDF, HTML, MHT, IMG, but low in RTF. That's the limitation that I unfortunately cannot influence. I can suggest you to export to html and then - copy paste to word for editing. The main exporting format is PDF. Mostly to fight this low resolution problem I added the Magnifier feature.

2. That's really strange. I'd suggest you to enable sound notification on screenshot Settings-Misc- Play sound on screenshot. After that you'll be sure when screen is taken. I think there is some feature miss-usage.

Please, keep me updated with those questions via contact

stepshot.net.

Glen Hilton Oleksandr, unfortunately I've had issues with the StepShot quick access toolbar. StepShot could be quite useful though without a decent Help file its seems a bit hit and miss, trial and error at the moment. In a short test period I was trying to work out if StepShot can save individual tool profiles rather than defaulting to the standard profiles (colours, fill shadows, sizes etc). After adding a few profiles to the quick access toolbar StepShot is crashing in XP3. I think some of these functions need to be explained in a little more detail to avoid possible app error issues. The idea of a user defined tool is great though how is it created and saved so it can be used on the QAT without crashing the app.?.

Sep 5 2011 at 5:20pm Copy Link

Alex Rem Yeah, Glen, good catch on searching-finding quick access toolbar! I'd say that it's not recommended way to use tools in current version.

K X I've used the trial version for a bit. I like it. A post from Novermber says something about a Professional version. Is that still planned?

As the only user, am I allowed to install this on my home computer and my work computer with one license?

Please write a help file or tutorial explaining all the features.

Is there a way to create our own cover template? If not, can you add that as a feature?

I created a small document using StepShot demo. Now that I wanted to create a another, different file, I'm confused about how to close the one I was working on and start a new one. I see options for open and save, but not to close what I was working on.

Do I have to clear the history list to start over? I think that's probably what's necessary; it's just not that intuitive.

A help file is very much needed.

Thanks.

K X I tried the magnifier button and saw that it launches the Windows magnifier, then I remembered that I don't like the Windows magnifier all that much. (But I never knew you could undock and resize it)

So I launched the magnifier I *do* use, Magnifying Glass Pro (from a previous Bits sale). And it works as bob roos mentioned above: it's a way to crop while you're screen capturing, because what's captured is what was within the borders of the magnifying glass.

0

Michael K Hi Oleksandr,

Yes I did see the policy statement but "transfer of a license to another owned computer is allowed." does not mean the same as being allowed to install and use the program on a PC and laptop at the same time. It actually implies that it can be installed on a single computer but can be "transferred" to another one if needed as opposed to being able to install it on a laptop and PC concurrently, which is much more convenient and a benefit to the user.

You might want to get a bit of clarification assistance from Roger at Bits to make the policy clearer for the benefit of others who may not see our "conversation".

So, I take it from your response that we will be able to install the program on a PC and laptop at the same time without restriction.

Thanks

Michael

Michael K @Eddie

When a policy says licensed "per user", it does not always follow as you state, that it can be installed on any system where you are the primary user.

In my humble opinion, these questions are best answered by the developer as they are the only one who can provide definitive answers that carry meaningful weight.

Thanks

Eddie Tex @ Michael K, that's interesting. Do you know of any instance where "per user" does NOT mean that you can at least install on both a desktop and a laptop (which was your original question)? I've never seen that myself.

In any case, it was not only written on the policy tab, but the question was also answered by the developer in the "older comments" section as well.

HJ B These comments illustrate why BDJ should have clear definitions of software features that are then displayed as to each offering. Either because of language problems or willful equivocation or amateurism, there end up being repeated dialogs in which readers rightfully seek to nail down features:

1. What are the installation rights?;

2. Is this the current version of this software?

3. What other concurrent versions of this software are there (e.g regular, pro, advanced, etc.?

4. Is there a pdf manual for the software?

5. Is there a known bug list?

6. What operating systems does the vendor certify are compatible?

7. Are program rights lost if the software becomes corrupted or inaccessible due to failure of the computer on which it was originally installed?

8. Are future upgrades offered on par with upgrades of paid version?

9. What benefits, if any, are included as to future upgrades?

10. Is there any point in saving the installation module after installation?

@HJ B,

First off, watch your language.. you're skirting a fine line and we like to keep the tone friendly here.

If you take a look around the web you'll quickly realize that our "Policy" section on the right of this page goes way above and beyond what any other download site has to say about exactly what's on offer in terms of the license for the software. About half of your questions are clearly answered in that section.

As I'm sure you know, we always feature the most recent version of software, unless we clearly state otherwise. The operating systems are displayed underneath the "Buy" button.

Your other points about, bug lists, a PDF manual, things like that, crop up very rarely here, and I doubt that information about them would be a deciding factor for anyone. We like to give you all the relevant details to purchase, but similarly we don't want to blind people with minutia, that's why we link to the developer's website. If you would like to see this type of information on our promotions please start a thread in the forum and we'll discuss it, we're always looking to improve what we do.

bob roos What are the newest things in this release? I have used StepShot to document procedures and have found it very convenient and easy to use. A picture is worth at least a thousand words. Support has been excellent. I recommend StepShot to anyone who has the task of trying to explain to someone how to do something Step By Step.

It is also useful for tracking program bugs. Have you ever had a problem and are not sure how you got there? With StepShot you can set a number of captures and go about your work. When the problem happens you have a map of the steps and a screen shot of the problem. I test software and this has made the problem definition much clearer.

HJ B @Nico

1. I do not know what your reference to "watch your language" refers to. Nothing I wrote warrants it.

2. More than half of the comments that readers write have to do with effort to clarify software descriptions and claims, and they reflect many other readers who do not write. A standardized spec or disclosure form would save a lot of time.

Jan 25 2012 at 7:09am Copy Link

0

Louis H @bob roos... thanks for your input on the software itself. Comments like yours are very helpful to me when deciding even if I want to install a demo in order to explore the software further.

@Nico... fwiw... I have found that in the overwhelming majority (98%) of the offers I am in interested in purchasing, the licensing info provided by BDJ has been more than sufficient for me to decide, at least regarding that aspect, if the program offered is worth further exploration. And in the few cases where it isn't clear to me, I have found the vendors willing to clarify or have been able to clarify for myself by visiting the vendors website.

I know my "standards" for such things may not be as exacting as others, but from one of the folks who spends his time mostly in the "cheap seats" section when it comes to utilization of software, I remain very satisfied with how you all at BDJ have continued to respond and adapt based upon the needs of both vendor and consumer.

And in all the time I have been around, and with all the purchases I have made here, there is only 1 - a SINGLE one - that I list as negative. And that was nothing to do on BDJ's part, but rather on the part of the vendor months after the sale. So keep the offers coming!!!!

3. Save annotated image as image file accessible to other apps.

Is this correct?

Also, does StepShot have an option to capture or not capture movement within the capture area (as mouse movement)?

VLM To Everyone ... is anyone in a position to compare/contrast the annotation capabilities of StepShot with, say, SnagIt or some other well-known app?

Jan 26 2012 at 12:48pm Copy Link

0

Alex Rem Dear VLM,
A user CAN use StepShot to
1. Capture image(with hotkey or menu bar click).
2. Annotate image (with cozy editor).
3. Save annotated image as image file accessible to other apps (as PNG, JPG, BMP). What I meant is that you will need to do saving for each separate image, not for bulk of those.

Also, does StepShot have an option to capture or not capture movement within the capture area (as mouse movement)?

Mouse moves without clicks are not captured. But you can use the timeout to capture mouse down & up separately for such scenarios as Drag&n&drop. I suggest you to play with the app first... That must clarify most of your questions.

Best regards,
Oleksandr Reminnyi

VLM Ohhhhhhhhhh ... I'm very glad I asked for clarification. Saving the individual images is fine, at least for me, no problem!

Regarding the second item, above, so Step Shot provides a series of still images, so to speak, not moving images/video of any kind. That seems clear. Thank you! There are other apps for that, of course. :)

Roxanne Brown Hi Oleksandr Reminnyi,

I will definitely reach out to you. I have it on another machine (a 2nd license) and it works fine (Win7, 64 bit). I don't know why it keeps crashing on the Vista 32 bit - it's when I try to save it.

I think the progam is great and I love it! It has saved me a lot of time and I can't wait to get it working on the Vista machine.

Thanks for responding!

Jesus Perez Just bought it. It works GREAT on Win7 64-Bit. I had to Exit out of Snagit first, though. Fine piece of software, Oleksandr!

Question: How can I remove the StepShot logo from the first page and the circular images on the right?

Jan 26 2012 at 7:20pm Copy Link

VLM Oleksandr, a technical question ... Can the shortcut keys be reassigned? Obviously, they conflict with other applications (such as SnagIt, but by no means ONLY Snagit and other screenshot apps. I realize that I can use HotKeyz or the like to reassign them, but really, IMO you should provide this capability.

Yes?

Alex Rem Dear jesus!
Images depends on the template you use. Try different to find the most suitable!

Dear Vlm!
The hotkeys can be set on the first tab of the settings dialog.

VLM Curious ... why would one have to exit from SnagIt first? Conflict of shortcuts? Or otherwise?

Jan 27 2012 at 4:52pm Copy Link

0

bob roos @vlm I do it because I am too lazy to assign something other than PrtSc to StepShot for the rare times I want to trigger a screen capture as part of the StepShot sequence. I usually just use the mouse clicks to trigger things and there is no conflict so SnagIt keeps running.

Actually lazy is not the right word. I am afraid that if I assigned a different shortcut key, I would not remember what it was and then would have to look it up. Easier just to kill SnagIt.

Jan 27 2012 at 5:13pm Copy Link

VLM @Bob Roos - Thanks for clarifying! I just wanted to make sure there isn't some fundamental, known conflict between the 2 apps.

D J Pity that the license only will permit personal (non-commercial) use. Why? I don't have really any personal activities in my life that require (quoting from above) "detailed step-by-step procedure guides and manuals. Imagine documenting and editing each step of a procedure until it reads perfectly, then combining it all together and exporting it as a document that's available to everyone!" and then sharing all this detail with friends and/or family. Don't get me wrong, the software would be interesting to take it out for a real road test (commercial [real world business and/or educational institution] use) instead of an easy test drive [personal use] in a parking lot, if you will. Nevertheless, a tip of the hat to the software publishers for making their software available here and the 100% discount

Arlene Manduca @Oleksandr Reminnyi (responding to Joshua Cearley).

Okeksandr, Do I understand correctly: The free giveaway is for the date specified on Bitsdujour. I download the program from the link and immediately receive an activation/registration code by email. I install the program whenever I wish and insert the code then. If I get free software through bitsdujour, I can't request a registration code from the software developer later. Right?

If I'm right - that's what makes Bitsdujour such a GREAT site and SO much better than any WELL KNOWN giveaway sites. I install the program when I'm ready, a real copy, without being pressured to install it immediately and give comments instantly.

On other giveaway sites you get a PROVISIONAL license. If you roll back your registry to an earlier time (because of driver problems, software conflicts or a virus, the program stops working and will NEVER WORK AGAIN. You cannot reactivate it, or reinstall it. It's a TRIAL copy.

If your hard drive dies, a Bitsdujour program should be able to be installed on your replacement drive with the same activation key.

There are NO games on Bitsdujour. No fake thumbs up, fake reviews, or deleting legitimate comments or problems. Bitsdujour and their software companies never play tricks on users like auto-updating your program so it goes from free to a 30 day trial and then stops working. Other sites DO THAT. That program's data will no longer be viewable or useable. If it's a password protector, etc, you're STUCK.

On Bitsdujour, I've never seen flaky ALPHA programs dishonestly passed off as giveaways to get testers. Who wants free LEPROSY, that trashes your PC?

Thank you Bitsdujour for running such an honorable and legitimate site. I have no affiliation with Bitsdujour. I'm a user and I appreciate them very much. Anyone simply reading posts on other giveaway sites will see many activation problems daily, plus complaints of trashed machines. The other sites use a "wrapper" so you can't install the program EXCEPT during that 24 hour period. That installation "wrapper" damages or corrupts the software install files and causes the problems.
Sincerely,
Arlene Manduca

The sites that provides giveaways are responsible for their activation wrappers, and they are good enough not to corrupt your system.

Mario Balzic OK, so I tried this on a older but reliable Windows 2000 Pro laptop (not all of us can afford to keep up with the Jones's), and it told me it needed a newer version of the Windows Installer, and offered to download and install it from Microsoft. Nice touch! It worked like a champ and I proceeded with the install. Then, when I went to RUN the application, I received an error because I do not have the required version of the DOT NET framework installed on this machine. A suggestion: At this point, as with the Windows Installer, you might offer to download the framework and install it from Microsoft just as you did with the Windows Installer. All I got was an Windows error window referring to a missing DLL and a suggestion to reinstall the framework. I did not see anywhere in what I read here that mentioned the framework as a requirement, nor did I see any other specific Windows requirements in fact. You also might want to update the information to reflect what versions of Windows are supported and any other specific requirements such as the DOT NET framework. Had I known the DOT NET framework was required, I would not have attempted to install on this win2k system.

I like the idea of this program, and I can see that I would have a use for it even if it is for personal use only. I can't install it on the machine I am using presently without the DOT NET framework needed, so I will try it out later on my XP desktop which I think does have the framework installed. My question is this: My son visits from time to time and uses one of my computers. Is it within the personal use restriction for me to create an instruction manual for specific local procedures on my machine that my son is using? I have some very specific backup and encryption procedures that I follow which are not obvious and when I am not home, my son might need a tutorial or a refresher on these procedures that I have in place on my computer so he does not inadvertently screw things over... Just wondering...

Thanks for this program offer. From what I've read in the comments, it seems like decent software package... I've downloaded the software and received the activation code in my email, and I'm looking forward to playing with it when I return home in a few days...

Tortuga Hello
It is indeed important that specs & requirements be stated & accurate, so we can figure out if our machines are compatible, PRIOR to installing

»The BdJ's upper right box says the prog needs .net 3.0
»On the dev's site, first article under the "Features" tab, it states it needs .net 4.0
So, which is it??
Or does the requirements change depending on which OS it is being installed? Don't think that is even possible ...
Maybe it changed for v2.2.15.355?

Other than that, this app seems very helpful
Thank you for the great app & great promo

Nelson Therrien Thanks for the software... It makes me think a little bit to Dr. Explain (another software sometimes in promotion here.) Though Dr. Explain seems to have more features, it many times more expensive (of course, I'm talking about StepShot's regular price).

StepShot seem to only produce "documentation"(i.e. pdf, html and so on)... If you want a VIDEO software, you can use Camtasia Studio (the software used to record the video to promote StepShot)...

If you're looking for a free software, Jing is made by the same company as Camtasia Studio (Techsmith). It's really similar to Camtasia in terms of screen recording... you just don't have the "editing the video" part.

For example, user clicks on 3 checkboxes, each click gets it's own number indication on the same image in stead of 3 seperate images.
This could make the final document smaller page wise.

Could you please tell me the resolution of your images? StepShot preserves high quality of the images when exporting, so that if you place a large image into exported document you can zoom in to see all details.
If you don't need the info from full screen screenshot - then try using region recording, it puts cut images into export. That decreases exported document greatly.

Dear Ron,

At the second you can easily achieve this task by pausing the recording and adding annotation only to the first screenshot made for the screen. You can also easily delete all the duplicates.

In StepShot, I can record screenshots with 3 options: full screen, active window and region.

Is it possible to record region screenshots at a pre-defined position, wherever the mouse cursor goes?
For example, I would like to capature the top-left 1/4 of my screen wherever my mouse cursor goes.
Or is it possible in future versions?

Harold Morris Seems my issues with PayPro were removed from postings. Too bad, since others are experiencing similar problems. Unfortunate censorship.

Dewebmeester NL Hi there,
Trying the trial version but does it have limited options? Do not see a html export option or font edit.
Kind regards, Meindert

Dewebmeester NL Sorry, found my answers already. HTML export works fine even in trial and so does font edit. So I do not find limitations. Problem was I tried in sample and not in own project. Thanks.

Alex Rem Hi there! Yep, actually Trial version gives only one limitation - that is the period of usage. All the other features are in place. -Alex

Alex Rem Dear BDJ fans!

Becase some of the answers were unanswered, we extended the deal!

@Nick, The idea of StepShot is to produce a screencast-like documents, but not the video.

@Dewebmeester - looks like you are a lucky guy)! It's up to you, if you want to do the purchase).

VLM Does the product provide strong support for side heads?

Feb 11 2015 at 3:39am Copy Link

Alex Rem It's actually a question what you would like to achieve inside of the document, For instance, if that is a table-like layout, you can see the Word table exporting templates.
So I'd say- it is possible, but depends on a goal. We are not there for document publishing, we are for easy screenshoting and annotation.

Support This is pretty cool software - nice job. I have a question about the "Export Templates" Dropdown - it only allows for the selection of "Basic" and I'm wondering if there are additional templates available?

It mentions "Select exporting template from the list of installed ones:"

If there are additional templates - how do I get them so that I can install them - or is this a feature for a future version?

Raymond Is there a "delay" for taking a snapshot? Here is the scenario, some of my forms have complex drop downs or multi-level pop-up menus that I need to capture... can StepShot handle these complex snaps???

Feb 11 2015 at 9:16am Copy Link

Alex Rem @Martin,
All the existing templates can be duplicated and modified, this information can be found on our help site https://stepshot.atlassia...Id=6127657.
At the second we don't distribute the templates, only offer services to do that based on your requirements.
@Raymond,
Yes, in the settings menu you can set define delay before capturing. But I should say that StepShot works great with any complex dropdowns without any delays.

Raymond OK, thanks, that sounds good.

Is this for the pro version?
Are there any "watermarks"/etc on this version?

Feb 11 2015 at 9:29am Copy Link

Alex Rem @Raymond,
No, nothing like that. I highly suggest you taking a look at the product trial - it's just the same as the activated, but only limited to be used for 30 days.

Ansel Taft StepShot reminds me a lot of Clarify. I own the latter and its downfall is it's hard to use/organize things. I got so frustrated I after one use I ditched it. StepShot's video did a good job selling me on its ease of use and organizational capabilities.

The only thing I wish it had was a publish to WordPress feature like Clarify. That's originally was drew me to it.

Cheers

Raymond After trying it out for a bit, I have two immediate questions...
1. I am still having troubles taking snaps of regions with complex popup menus and or drop-down combo box fields being expanded

2. Can I export only _one_ page of an article?

Thanks, -Raymond

Alex Rem @Ansel, Thank you for great feedback!

@Raymond,
1. Hm, what are the troubles? Do you use standalone capture mode or recording?
2. No. But at the same time I'm not sure what are you trying to achieve.

Unfortunately I will have to take off for now. Have a great day everybody!

Rini User I wanted to try Stepshot and downloaded the trial version. But it displayed an error "Needs Microsoft .Net 4.5 and above". Is there any way I can use the software without downloading the .Net 4.5 / above?

Also, is there any possibility to introduce portable version?

Feb 7 2016 at 7:44am Copy Link

Alex Rem Hello friends,

@Rini, no, unfortunately StepShot would now work without .NET component.
@Super Sid, we are not planning bringing the product to BDJ for now.

Have a great day you guys!
Sasha, StepShot.
