What are people saying about SUMo

Santosh User Does this software also detects the necessary drivers which needs to be installed for the system?
Nov 12 2015 at 4:30am Copy Link
Joe Douglas Hey Santosh-They have another free program on their website called DUMO for driver updates.Info page: Download here: Be sure to download the Lite version of SUMO from their website as the full version is reported to have spyware.See the warning below. I'm not sure if this version has the spyware so I am just going to download the free lite version from their website which shows the latest version Version : / October 31st 2015) so I'm not sure how this is a giveaway. SUMO does get good reviews in various places though.Hope that helps.
WARNING: Should you decide to download SUMo, please ensure that you download the "Lite" or ZIP/7z versions (find the ZIP/7z versions on the download page - the links with the 7z and ZIP icons - the "Lite" version is below that, where it says "Free of all sponsors download links", as indicated in the screen shot below). The full version comes with a program called Relevant Knowledge, which is detected by most security software as spyware. I agree with many that have contacted me that the developer is (at best) damaging his reputation by bundling SUMo with RK. There is a link to this sponsor on the product download page but be aware that the RK site is red-rated by WOT (Web Of Trust) for obvious reasons. The NoRK version comes bundled with a SUMo toolbar. The "Lite" version is identical to the full version, only without the spyware, and therefore deserves to be on this list. The safest to use would be the compressed versions as they do not have installers that can add any unwanted software/keys to your system/registry.

Richard User Is this deal going to be for SuMo Pro? I already have regular free SuMo, which is currently on version

Btw, SuMo is pretty good at what it does. Not perfect, but pretty good. I use it to advise me of what it THINKS needs updating, and then for those apps I actually want to update, I go to the software vendor's site directly. But that's just me. Sometimes SuMo and the software publisher don't agree on what the latest release of their app is.

You might ask, why would I not want the latest version of all my software? First, the update might be so minor that it isn't worth the time to download and install the latest version. CCleaner is a good example of this. Great product, but they release a new version almost every month with imperceptible changes.

Second, sometimes newer isn't always better. If an app you like decides to change its UI or maybe remove some features, you might wish you had stayed with the old version. I put Skype in this category.

Third, and this could apply to BDJ purchasers in particular, you might own a license for a product that doesn't apply to an upgrade. If you update this type of software, you might render it unfunctional based on the license you purchased. So be careful!

Lifetime Upgrades Does anyone know if KC Software is running any July 4th sales for the Premium Pack license? I see all of their software is a lifetime license with the premium pack, but does that mean all of their software is supported with a lifetime upgrade policy when purchasing the premium pack

I wish BitDuJour would let me comment This deal is USELESS to anyone who has the current version installed like me.... the code is for like version 4.1 and they are on 4.3.7
Jul 5 2016 at 6:06am Copy Link
Kokoro Fasching This says it is 100% off $30 which is the 1 year pro, but what is installed and licensed is the free version. So this is a bait and switch?!
Jul 5 2016 at 6:07am Copy Link
Constantin Florea The code we supply in the receipt email works with the latest version of the product which is

The 1 year Pro license is $14.99 and the Lifetime license (which is the one we're promoting today) is $29.99.
BitsDuJour Admin - Jul 5 2016 at 6:11am Copy Link
I wish BitDuJour would let me comment Downloaded the CURRENT LITE installer directly from the website and was able to use the license offered here... so i take back my previous comment of this being a no go... Thanks BDJ

Adam P I like Sumo and have used the free version for years.

So according to the fine print, there is no updates, but the only difference between the Pro and Free is that SUMo PRO adds automatic self-update & direct update access capabilities to SUMo.

The second part is great cause it means no more Google searches for the software site.

But if there is no self-updating for a year or life-time, then how is this deal different for the pro vs the lifetime version?
Jul 5 2016 at 8:01am Copy Link
John User For those of you with v 4.1 (I believe I got it here in Oct '15), you can just go to the vendor's website and upgrade to v. 4.4 for free. I just did that without a problem and am running a new scan now.
Jul 5 2016 at 8:03am Copy Link
Aaron Gravvat The last time you promoted sumo for free it was a lifetime license, but only for that particular installed version, it didn't include updates. One of the benefits of the pro version of automatic updating, but using that feature invalidated the license. Can you confirm whether or not those details are true for this promo? It's a lifetime license, but not if you update it at all.
Jul 5 2016 at 8:04am Copy Link
InsaneXade I thought it automatically downloaded and installed. Is there a weird setting I must set to use it?
Jul 5 2016 at 8:05am Copy Link
Richard User I agree with "I wish" above. I applied the license info from this promotion to the free SuMo I already had and it upgraded it, no problem. The only thing that's a little weird is that, after the upgrade, when you go to "About" in SuMo, it doesn't actually say that it is the Pro version. But it behaves like it is, and the nags about upgrading to Pro go away, so it looks like it's working like it should.
Jul 5 2016 at 8:07am Copy Link
Aaron Gravvat John User -
Can you tell me how exactly you did that? I just installed the 4.1 version from the November 2015 promo. Right after install Sumo asked me if I wanted to update to the most recent version. I clicked auto update. Sumo told me that was only available in the pro version. I clicked OK. Sumo opened the registration dialog. I put in the registration info from BDJ. Sumo auto updated. Sumo is now the free version and not pro. I have also installed the current version and tried registering with the BDJ info from last november. Doesn't work. So, if you did get the november license info to work with the current version of Sumo, I'd love to hear the steps you took. Thanks.
Jul 5 2016 at 8:22am Copy Link
John User Sorry, you are right, Aaron. I went back to check and it installed the FREE version 4.4, not the Pro version. It appears as you said, if you update the give away version it will revert to the free version. As you can get the free version on their website there is no incentive to pick up the same thing here.
Jul 5 2016 at 8:33am Copy Link
Aaron Gravvat I believe this current promo lets you register the current version. But, since Sumo seems to be updated at least a couple of times a month, the promo seems a bit useless to me. Especially considering that if you use one of the benefits of the pro version (automatic updates), it breaks it for you.
Jul 5 2016 at 8:38am Copy Link
xilolee Hi guys. :)

Version 4.4 should be lifetime.
Version 4.5 will probably considered as major upgrade (hence the license won't be valid).
My advice is to download the portable version every time there is an upgrade, so you won't lose your 4.4 license, if it's like I wrote.
Jul 5 2016 at 9:54am Copy Link
John User One other thing: despite definitely declining to install additional software during the installation of Sumo, I now find icons on my desktop for Clean computer-KCleaner and Driver Update - Dumo. Really didn't want these and the whole upgrade issue is a bit much for me. Actually Glary Utilities has a software updating tool in it that is maybe not as good as Sumo, but I think I will uninstall Sumo and the bonus programs I picked up today.

Thanks for the offer though BDJ.

Richard User Yes, John User, KC Software installs 2 shortcuts on your desktop promoting their other products. Annoying, but they are just links back to their website. They aren't the only company that does this. You can delete them easily.
Jul 5 2016 at 10:43am Copy Link
Aaron Gravvat FYI the Lite and the .zip versions don't place any shortcuts.

RichU The license agreement says that you are agreeing that Relevant Knowledge will be installed.
Jul 5 2016 at 9:34pm Copy Link
Richard User @RichU. Decline it. You don't have to install Relevant Knowledge.

@Moises User. Saying it's a terrible app without telling us why you have that opinion is a waste of everyone's time.
Jul 5 2016 at 9:53pm Copy Link
Peter Thompson I know I'm late posting but been using the app via this deal and slightly confused.

The pro version adds direct access to the developers site but all you need to do is google the developer's name and find this.

It is a good program on the whole, as it finds a lot of updates that other updaters don't but there's also a lot of what appear to be false positives, same with Dumo. It would be good if the pro version actually had a direct link to the actual download as sometimes you still have to google to find specific versions
Jul 11 2016 at 6:48am Copy Link
Richard User @Peter Thompson, I agree, there are some false positives. I also agree the Pro version doesn't add all that much functionality. There is a setting in Pro, however, where instead of Sumo taking you to the developer's site, it will take you to a KC Software/Sumo page where they host what they identified as the newest version of whatever software it happens to be. So, in that sense, it is a direct link.
Jul 11 2016 at 8:20am Copy Link
Peter Thompson @Richard User where is this setting? I can set it to get the update from the Sumo Server but there are no files hosted on this bit and it just tells you the latest version according to Sumo. To download I still have to click to go to the developers website or google the download
Jul 12 2016 at 10:34am Copy Link
Aaron Gravvat Basically your choices are sumo server, which takes you to a page where you can click a button to do a Google search for the software, or you can choose direct from manufacturer, which takes you to the developers home page, not to any specific download page.

Basically i think dunno is good fit letting you know what software on your system needs to be updated. You're pretty much on your own when it comes to downloading and installing the updates, though dunno fires haver those couple options to help you save a click or two or a little tough.

Personally, I bought the full pro version because I use sumo regularly to check for updates to my software. It's small, esyy to use, unobtrusive and has a portable version. I paid for it as a thank you and to support further development.

If you're looking for something that takes you to a downloadable version of the update, try filehippo's tool.
Jul 12 2016 at 1:52pm Copy Link
Richard User @Peter Thompson

In SUMo, go to Options > Settings. The choice to get updates from the Developer official web site or from the SuMo Server is at the bottom right of the Settings box where it says Get Update. It's an either/or setting.
Jul 12 2016 at 3:42pm Copy Link
Peter Thompson @Richard User yeah that just takes you to their page but it has no direct links to a download. Still it finds more updates than the likes of filehippo.

The only other thing that I've noticed is if you have Beta updates selected, it doesn't actually indicate which ones are beta. I may send in a suggestion about this to the developer
Jul 14 2016 at 1:25pm Copy Link
Calvin Smith The fine print says this version can be used indefinitely. So, is this the Pro Version that's being given away today? The Promo only says Ver 5.1x for PC which doesn't state which version. Thank you.
Apr 9 2017 at 5:11am Copy Link
Kyle Katarn It is 5.1.x only but with no time limitation

JW Every version of SUMo (and DUMo for that matter) I've ever installed has simply provided me with a list of those programs installed, along with a list of those which have an update available: but I've yet to find the program ever keeping any of those programs updated!
"SUMo scans your computer, automatically builds a log of installed software, and then goes on a mission to detect and install required updates ..."

Is there some mystery to this action occurring, since the quoted "guff" clearly indicates that SUMo ought to fetch and install these updates itself?
Apr 9 2017 at 5:48am Copy Link
Kyle Katarn This is as per design. We do not want SUMo or DUMo to automatically deploy software in order to prevend malware/junk installation out of user control (which is the weakness of most our competitors)

Although, we provide web pages that ease the search for genuine update packages.
KC Softwares - Apr 9 2017 at 5:53am Copy Link
rodken So this doesn't do what it says? Does anyone have experience with this soft, I like keeping everything with my pc up to date. Does this software make you do it yourself?
Apr 9 2017 at 7:25am Copy Link
Kyle Katarn So far, we have very positive feedback, especially since Secunia has declared End Of Life for its Secunia PSI 2.0 (with lots of users coming to SUMo).
KC Softwares - Apr 9 2017 at 8:27am Copy Link
Richard User I've used SUMo for a couple of years. I run it every now and then - every 2 or 3 months or so - to see the status of all my installed apps. I just ran it now and it says I have 223 products loaded and 65 updates available, 15 of which are "major" updates, meaning a whole version number higher as opposed to a "point" update.

This is important: I have learned not to 100% trust SUMo on whether or not an update is warranted. I always go to the vendor site to see what the latest version is OR if the app has its own update checker, I use that. There are a few reasons for this.

(1) If you bought software from BDJ or elsewhere on a promotion, your "Pro" license may be invalidated if you update the app. It's in the terms of the promotional price. So in that case, you would NOT want to update that app, especially for a minor update. You can tell SUMo to ignore apps you know you don't want to update.

(2) There may be other reasons you don't want to update a working app. For example, the developer changed the UI, and you liked the old version better. Or maybe it's just a minor update or it's an app you almost never use, and it isn't worth your while to update the app. (That's why I have 65 updates available to me right now. I don't bother to update every app. For example, I have Speccy which is a utility to show what my current system specs are. My version is The current version is By choice, I'm not taking the time to install this minor update. But I do like that SUMo informs me that it's available.)

(3) Even though you can tell SUMo to ignore "beta" versions (which I do), sometimes SUMo thinks there is a version of the app available that I can't locate on the vendor site, or if I can locate it, it isn't for my OS. I use the Media Monkey media player app. For awhile, SUMo was showing a later version than the vendor's own website was showing.

All those caveats aside, I do like SUMo and find that it is useful because it queries all your apps and reports their status in one place. You can see what you have, what the path is to the .exe file, what your current version is, and what SUMo thinks the most recent version is. The Pro version is more useful than the regular version because it adds a few conveniences. I would definitely NOT want it to update my apps on its own. I recommend SUMo for what it does.

There is a companion app called DUMo, which does the same thing for drivers as SUMo does for regular apps. DUMo is useful also for the same reasons, but you REALLY have to be careful when doing driver updates. In most cases, if you're not having a problem with a driver, don't update it. You're just inviting problems if you do. But it is nice to know what drivers are up-to-date and which ones might not be.
Apr 9 2017 at 8:48am Copy Link
Allan Fibecker I tried a giveaway last year, and I wasn't impressed at all. However, I found a tiny portable program Patch My PC, which is freeware. Btw the size is 591 KB, and it works just fine. Thanks for the offer but no thanks today.
Apr 9 2017 at 9:34am Copy Link
BearPup First off, I want to echo what Richard User said. Just because there is an update.... To which I add, if its not a major upgrade but a tweak, ask yourself the question, "Do I really need this [upgrade]?".

Being the happy owner of a brand new workhorse of a computer, I was curious as to whether the few installed programs were up to date. SUMo found 43 updates, but only 2 were major upgrades, both of which I was aware of. Though I've only tried it this one time, it responded as I thought it "should'.

If it continues to perform in this manner then I will call it a "keeper". At the very least it has earned the right to further evaluation.

Adolphe This seems to be the same Sumo Lite version always available on the publisher's site for free, as opposed to the paid-for Sumo Pro.

Sumo Lite might be enough for my needs, however it's still not high DPI-aware. This has not changed since I last tried and install it on October 2017. At that time, a fix was supposed to be in the works.

On my PC, either the interface is blurry, or its fonts are exceedingly thin, difficult to read and partially hidden in various parts of the program. I had to uninstall the program. Not usable for me.

kristina User I just downloaded these from BitsDuJour and the filename downloads as "SumoLite" as another commenter Adolphe stated.

So this is the same software already available for free 24/7 through the website with no additional features?

Constantin Florea For future promotions, please right click the Download button from the receipt email, then select "Copy Hyperlink" and paste the copied address/URL into the address field of preferably either Firefox or Edge and if that is not possible, then any other browser except for Google Chrome. That should start the download.

I have both sent you the direct download URL you can use to download the product.

Michael Cook I actually was able to get it downloaded by switching to Firefox browser, I initially tried using Chrome.

Mario Trzes Not being able to download BitsDuJour software seems to be a common problem latelly. I can't too, but found a solution to the problem. When the download window appears, the one with the red down arrow, with the following messages -
"Your download will start in a moment.

If you do not see it click here"
with a blue click here link, DO NOT clik on this link!! If you click, NOTHING will happen again, and if you click too many time you will receive a message stating that you have done too many downloads or something simmilar.
The solution is to click with the RIGHT mouse button on the click here link. Now windows provides few options of what youo want to do with this link, being one - copy the link address!! Copy the address, open a new tab on your browser, paste the address on it, click enter and the download starts immediately.
This solution works with Chrome browser.
Hope this helps.

Loyal Customer No issues downloading, installing, and using the key that was sent by email.
A very useful application.
I have been using a portable version for quite some time, but this installable version is much better.
It easily and very quickly found the software that needs to be updated (I'm on an 8-core fast machine (Ryzen 7), with an M.2 very fast drive).
Thanks, BD, and thanks to the vendor as well.

MBe - what kind of version is this? Pro with free lifetime upgrades?
- and ist this correct: Transfer of a license to another owned computer is not allowed?

Mustang How is this even a deal? In the past 12 months they released v5.12 thru 5.14, so with this offer you wouldn't have even received a year of updates. Their website has two license options for 1 year at $19.08 US or a lifetime at $28.63 US. What am I missing?

Mario Demi The version with no lifetime updates costs $ 19.90.
Then I've now saved $ 2.00 here, but that's a long way off the 40% advertised

Nico Westerdale Great News! KC Softwares has agreed to extend this deal for another day - Enjoy!

Kyle Katarn My mistake on the post above, this deal is for the "lifetime licence" without time and NOT limited to current branch

Nelson Carvalho I believe that this is the best software to obtain information about the programs installed on the computer and detect available updates, in addition to allowing you to download updates in different ways. Interesting and useful filters.
