Mike G Oh yes! I'll definitely be jumping on BDJ for this. I was just about to upgrade from Ultra Recall Pro 3 to 4 and consider it worth every penny. Now I can get 4 for even less than the upgrade price!

Ultra Recall is one of the most important apps on my computer. I use it to store all kinds of work and personal information. Everyone comes to me for answers at work. Ultra Recall is the "secret" weapon (although I openly tell everyone about UR, some still don't make the connection) and it's why I can always find important info at home in seconds.

I'm getting ready to build a new PC. All my notes, Web sites, diagrams, performance charts, newsgroup discussions, prices, etc. are all stored in UR. Just copy, link, drag and drop or type anything you don't want to lose in there and you're done. You can have fun discovering all the features later. :- ]

BitsDuJUser Hi,

I may be interested in the pro version if and only if it works with Outlook Business Contact Manager. There are no references in this regards in the help file.

Earlier, I had found your product and after installing I deinstalled it due to the trial limitations. I could not test properly. The price was anathor factor.

Although those utilities may be nice and interesting, summing up all the utilities, it may become too expensive.

Hence the discount price is good enough to invest money for such an utility.

However due to propreitery format it becomes restrictive in use.

hence I need to know full clarification regarding tighter integration with Business Contact Manager in outlook 2007 if it would also interface with the SQL Addressbook + Projects with integrated SQL.

Bob S I'm interested in evaluating Ultra Recall for a variety of purposes.

I am especially interested in its capabilities for handling structured data. For instance, in a list of contacts, can I create (as one example) fields for (i) company name; (ii) date of last contact; (iii) conference at which we met; etc. and "prepopuate" these fields with values from which I can select in a pulldown menu.

I've looked at the tagging functionality in UR, but I don't see where one can create a subset of keywords that would be specific to a particular field. In other words, when I'm selecting the value for "conference," I wouldn't want to select from a list that includes "companies."

Also, how much flexibility does one have in creating fields - e.g., number, length, type, layout, etc.?

Thank you.

Patrick N bought v3 last time offered here
i am very glad that i did, i also upgraded early to v4 ($50) totaling $89

v4 was recently released and works now fine with windows7
getting v4 here today $19.00\$39.00 must be considered a bargain

exellent software & often updated, kinooks techforum is also interesting, people buying today should pay a visit
personally i think kinook should promote this software better besides bitsdujour
not only for kinooks sales but people may actually miss out on this great software

thanks for a wonderful program

Merle One Strange behavior in the standard version : when I open a sample, Document Summary, and go into the quick search, and type A320, nothing is returned, even if there is a "Airbus A320" picture in the database. But when I enter Manhattan, it does find the right picture. I have chosen on purpose the second word of the picture title. Is this a bug ?

BitsDuJUser Hello,

The company was very kind to offer a 21 days license for testing. I found out that the UltraRecall Pro does not work with Business Contact Manager

------------------------------------------
"The UR Outlook sync/import functionality does work with Business Contact Manager"
------------------------------------------

Everything is extremely beautifully designed. Here, I do have heaps of suggestions for making the workflows much better, but that my taste of improvement.

Hope that they send me some news about the possibility to mke it work some day.

However, I would really recommend everyone to buy this lovely software.

Kyle A Bob S: Yes, you can create any number of custom attributes, which can be string (with a drop-down list of values), date, numeric, and other types (via Tools | Attributes). These can be assigned to a template with default values, added to a form, etc. You could create a custom attribute for "conference" with a list of choices.

Tagging is a little different, and can be used to associate one or more keywords with different items (Item | Keywords - User-defined keywords).

Kyle A Merle One: The regular Std - Pro price is $50.

When that sample was created, Ultra Recall did not keyword words containing digits by default. Now it does default to doing so, but the sample was not updated. If you do File | Save As (to make an editable copy), then rename the item, searching on a320 will find that item. We'll also fix the sample. Thanks.

Kyle A There isn't any difference between the Std and Pro editions regarding connecting to the internet. Maybe some security software is blocking it?

Merle One Seems to be solved after reboot. However, I still have a bunch of question on how to use UR, I hope I'll find the answer before the discount is over. For example : when I import a single favorite, how do I access again the original URL. There is no "properties" for a given item, at least none I could find.

Thanks.

Bob S I agree with others who indicate that tools like UR are indispensable. If you don't use one regularly, you are missing out on a tremendously useful productivity and research tool.

I currently use another outliner (MyInfo) extensively, but it looks as though UR ver. 4 contains some new features that may distinguish it.

Two question as I contemplate switching:
1. I see that you have an import facility for MyInfo files. Does this import all of the info contained in the MyInfo files (including what MyInfo calls attributes - this is where I've created "custom fields" for tagging with drop-down lists. I don't want to lose all of this meta data).
2. Is there a limit on the # of documents/items that can be stored in a UR database or the file size? I currently have 1,000's in one file, and the file size is 62.4 MB.

Thank you.
Oct 7 2009 at 8:30am Copy Link

Kyle A 1. It doesn't import MyInfo files directly, but it can import some of MyInfo's export formats. See
http://www.kinook.com/For...eadid=1071

Last time we checked, MyInfo did not export custom fields.

2. The size limit is very large (2 terabytes). Many users have multi-GB databases. See here for more details:

Alan I purchased the Pro version in June 2008, and used the Portable USB version for a while.

Does V4 Pro still have a version for running from a USB drive?
The sale price is cheaper than the upgrade price, so I might be interested if it does.

If so, do all the featiures of UR Pro work with the usb version?

Warren Russell I have a question for those of you who have used used both versions 3 and 4 of UltraRecall Pro:

I am a registered owner of version 3 and have been thinking about upgrading, but I am having to pinch ALL my pennies, and so far, haven't found any compelling reason to spend the money to upgrade.

It appears that the biggest difference between the two versions is that version 3 is not compatible with Windows 7, but I'm still running Vista and have no plans to upgrade in the near future.

The highlighting of search results would be very nice to have, but not $39 nice in my current financial situation.

Am I missing anything? Are there any other major changes that would justify upgrading?

Thanks!

Bob S I think the developer deserves kudos for promptly (and effectively) answering all the questions interested bdj'ers had. Speaks highly of UR.

I do have one other question - if I use UR primarily for structured data (I believe this uses the forms capabilities), is it possible to search for, select, and generate a list of items that meet certain criteria (e.g., prospects with an interest in X who have not received a certain report)?

And can the list be viewed and output to other programs in "list format? (CSV)?

Mike G I'll be brief since there isn't much time remaining for the discount. While the list of major enhancements over version 3 is currently rather sparse, there are numerous smaller improvements. I decided to upgrade in any case to support further development of features on the road map. Kinook has already indicated additional goodies are coming (custom navigation tree sorting is one of several I've been looking forward to that have already been hinted as likely version 4 projects).

Besides, you'll be kicking yourself watching new features roll off the assembly line if you don't grab the big discount today! But, you can always take advantage of the normal, and I think very reasonable, upgrade pricing later.

Look at so many software companies resorting to charging annual license fees (e.g. Info Select) and it highlights how much value we're getting with occasional and relatively inexpensive upgrade pricing for software as feature-rich as Ultra Recall...

Mitchel Haas I purchased the pro version 3.5 last year, so I was happy to see this offer for the 4.0 version, as it was a little less expensive than the upgrade price. I've purchased many many PIM's and note managers over the years, and Ultra Recall has ended being the only one I still use. My favorite use for it is to store and organize my favorite links, blog articles, and forum threads, so they're all in one place, and easily viewed right in the interface without having to use a browser. Of course, I use it for important notes, birthday reminders and other events too.

Mary Wilson I have enjoyed trying out this program and like the program, but I have found the help section very difficult to use to get a basic understanding on how to use many of its features. It is taken me all morning to figure out how to do the basic work on it. Finally figured out that you need to be able to access another window in the program called "Items Attribute"s to be able to change dates and add information to the many nice templates that are included. Unfortunately, I am unable to get this part of the program to work on the database I created to test out the program. I have looked threw the help section and found mention of this function and how it works, but not but not on how to access it if the function is not up when you create the database.

Kyle A It's not a checkbox per se, but you can enable 'Tools | Options | Trees | Show item flag icon in tree' and restart UR. Then to change an item's flag, click on the item's flag icon (or dot, to the left of the item icon) in the tree, and select a flag value in the popup menu. The flag icon changes to match, and the text is greyed out for the Completed flag.

Mike G Mary and others, as an avid user of Ultra Recall for several years now I can relate to the sense of a steep learning curve for some of the functionality. UR (especially the Pro edition) is a tool with something for every computer user, from newbies all the way up to power users.

It's difficult, if not impossible, for any application with this many features to make it easy for new users to find everything the first few times they use it. (Look at how much trouble Microsoft is having with Office). I agree in-line Help could be improved in that regard, but you can find pretty much anything by combining Help with the active and information-packed forums. Also, as you can see, Kinook is very responsive to questions.

The secret for me was deciding to stick with basic functions that are easy to find and use. Entering some notes, copying or linking to a few documents and web pages, customizing the data explorer tree to my liking...This covered most of what I needed anyway. Then I gradually read and learned new functions at a more relaxed pace. At that point, Ultra Recall became my best friend. On top of that, I get the bonus of a "Wow, I didn't realize UR could do that!" coming almost as fast as I have time to explore a little deeper.

Good luck and have fun!

Mary Wilson Before I puchase, I decided to take a look at the Professional version. Many of the items that make the Professional version I don't need. Like that it shows the main attributes on the screen instead of pulling up the attribute from the the disappearing bar. Is this a Professional only attribute? The USB version of this looks promising so does the fact that it has some advanced features for forms, and File/folder synchronization. I really am not understanding what the difference between the Professional and Custom Attributes and custom templates is? Is there any forums that have more information on the Professional version that you know of?

Kyle A Forms, synchronization, and portable mode are available in the Professional edition only. See here for a detailed comparison:

Jonathan Keener For nearly the past year, I've used the windows version of EverNote (desktop and portable) to handle the kinds of things this tool appears to do.

1. I'm curious if there are any EverNote users that have looked at Ultra Recall and can provide any pros/cons to switching? (Compared to EverNote Premium, Ultra Recall, with this deal, definately wins)

2. Is there any possibility of being able to import from EverNote into this tool?

3. One of the big benefits I've had with EverNote has been the web enablement of it. I can have EverNote installed on multiple machines and a USB key, and they all sync up to the web copy so syncronization is automatic. If I have the portable version installed on a USB and desktop editions installed on a machine, is this easy to sync? Or does it make more sense to always run the portable edition?

4. I use gmail as my primary email. Is there any support for using this with Ultra Recall?

Overall, looking at the trial, it looks like a very nice product, and it is very tempting. I talked myself out of getting it yesterday, but now with the extra day it is tempting me some more.
Oct 8 2009 at 8:18am Copy Link

Kyle A 2. UR can't import directly from EverNote, but it looks like you could export to HTML or MHT format in EverNote and import that into UR.

3. One option would be to keep the database on the USB stick and access from everywhere (via either the portable or an install version of UR). Another option might be to use some sort of sync tool such as Dropbox.

4. You can import gmail messages into UR using web page capture.

BitsDuJUser Hi Nico and everyone else,

The software does not work with Business Contact Manager adn hence that may not apply to many. However it is worth to point it out for users who uses.

It was told by the company here as well as in a private email exchange that it connects and works. But not on my computer.

So either the company did not check properly, or with a windows version on which it works or there was something in my workstation that irritated and made it incompatible.

I use FilceCenter (by Lucion.com) that is more expensive but extremely powerful. It does not have any databases, etc and does similar work and achieves the goals beautifully.

However, I offered to help them to troubleshoot for a trade of a license, as I do not really need the software but was curious.

No response was a response.

Tazzie @ Kyle Alons ... I have been testing this on the recommendation of other BDJ users. So far, I really like it! I am in the process of having to reformat my notebook, and wanted to back up the stuff I already had on UR. I searched for a long time, but could not find anything for backing up or exporting files/records. Usually it isn't too hard to find these settings in other programs, but in UR I just couldn't. I ended up saving each record individually for time purposes, since I am only trying it out and was not sure how soon I could get a response if I emailed tech support. Since I do reformat my computers on a regular basis, that has to be a consideration when purchasing s/w. Did I overlook something for backing up/exporting, or is that a limitation of the trial version?

Tazzie @ Kyle, thanks sooo much! I really do like UR, and hated the idea that no backup/export would be a deal breaker. I really appreciate the generous discount, because for a program like UR, the amount of time we have on BDJ usually isn't enough to truly explore all the features. I hate having to make hasty purchase decisions within time limits when I haven't evaluated the software adequately. However, with what I've been able to explore in UR given my time restraints and the generous discount, I feel pretty comfortable with the idea of going ahead and planning to buy UR!

Pal Molinar Hello,
This is a very nice piece of software. However, I can't find the one deciding point I am looking for. That is when handling larger text on the right upper text pane-side, one cannot fold / collapse several lines under the i.e. first line or an internal headline.
This is very important to get a better overview WITHIN larger Texts and the context.
Did I oversee such an already implemented feature ?
Or is this planned for the next future ?

Jim McGowan I have been using Ultra Recall Pro for a couple of years and I just wanted to say that this is not a deal to pass up. UR can be used in so many ways to store, organize, and even edit your documents - of almost all kinds. I will admit that it wasn't the kind of program that I could just fire up and use effectively from the start but it has been well worth the learning experience.

I presently use a few different applications to capture and store snippets of information I may need at some time. But Ultra Recall is where I keep all the data that I value. It has been a great investment for me personally.

Thank you.

K Bruns Hi,

I just tried out UR and came across the following questions:

Question #1

1. I import a Word-file into UR
2. I change the (same) Word-file in MS Word
3. If I like to have the changes visible in UR, it seems as if I have to delete the existing Word-file in UR and then to import the Word-file once again in UR. I tried just to re-import over the existing Word-file in UR (without deleting it), but this did not work. Can UR do this by itself automatically somehow?

Question #2

How can I import linked webpages as well?

Question #3

After having searched for a word, for example, the search result shows the number of documents (respectively items) where the respective word appeared. Can I somehow see how often this respective word is found in one item, and can I somehow jump from search result to search result within one item?

Thanks for answering

K Bruns Hello Kyle,

thanks for answering. Yours UR is really a very useful, sophisticated software. Great product. Unfortunately, I think I have not expressed myself clear in what I meant by "Question #2":

H P I read somewhere that in the "Child Items", you can have those child items of an item in tree order (even when I don't know how to do it), but it seems you must option for this every time you display an item = any time you click on an item, you must then change the display of its child items from alphabetical to tree order, and the same for every items whose child items you want to have displayed in ABC order?

Isn't there any OPTION to OPT for this display in tree order, for UR in a whole or at leat for any UR file, so that those child items will be AUTOMATICALLY be displayed in tree order when you click on a parent item?

The sense of all this would be to have the child items of an item displayed in tree order = in the order YOU wanted them to be, in this child items window, so as not to have to double-click each item in order to have its child items displayed in the order YOU chose.

Since the tree of a large file can become quite big, this would be important for me (I know UR has hoisting, but displaying child items in tree order would make that you didn't have to hoist the tree but for an item really important.

Did I overlook this option to display child items in tree order, or does UR not allow this? If not, do you plan to implement such a command?

Kyle A After showing the Tree Order column and sorting on it, right-click the column header and choose Set as Default in the popup menu to use that layout for all items of that type.

H P I have seen the Customizationpersiste help page and tried in vain to understand it. In fact, there are wtp such column headers, first there is "Child Items" on orange, then there is another header, called "Item Title", and other columns, above a blue line on white background, and above the child items.

Even before your kind answer, I had tried to right-click on both header lines, but there is NO option whatsoever there, only "Set as Default" = the columns to be displayed, and if the abc is downward or upward, NOWHERE I see any possibility to set "tree order" or something other that would make them in tree order, not even for the current list, let alone for any default.

Please understand that I am NOT trying to say UR isn't good, and in fact, I'm really considering bying it, were it not for this. So I'm not trying to say the help file cannot be understood, I'm just saying that I do not understand this issue even when I try.

So please try to explain the solution to me in other words, the help file page cannot give me the answer.

H P Thank you very much for this big step ahead. I clicked "View", clicked "Choose Columns", opted for "Tree Order" and did then get that "Tree Order" was another column that could be put in 1,2,3 order. Worked perfectly for the item where I did this, so I have at least understood now how to set this for a GIVEN ITEM.

As said, this is a big step ahead, and I'm thankful that at last I know this. But my initial question was, how to set the preference for a WHOLE FILE? And if this is not possible, is this in the making? My motivation is very simple: If I have a big file, in Professional Version, with thousands of items, I'll have hundreds of items with subitems, so setting this default for each of those items seperately would take many hours!

Is there a global default option for this, or will it be introduced?
Jan 10 2011 at 9:03am Copy Link

Kyle A Set as Default, as shown in the screen recording, sets that layout as the default for all items of that item type (template). The default does need to be set separately for each distinct template item in the database.

H P Thank you very much, I got it now, sets the default for all coming later when I do it for a template. So I'm very pleased this is possible. Last question, but I'll buy anyway: If I do lots of importing, and want to have my imported items to behave in this way, I'll just have to set this up for the template, then do a new item depending on this template, and then import my TreePad files as children of this item?

Or do those newly imported files behave otherwise, not as items created manually within UR itself = would their child panes sorted in tree order, like child items created "within" UR?

Excuse for my dumb questioning instead of just trying out myself, but in Europe it's late in the evening, and I'm deadly tired...

I tried to save an item from QVC. It would give an error message when I tried to import it. Then I did it by pasting the URL. It did not give an error message but the picture of the item not there. It also was doing things like using the wrong font for the page.

going to narnia brb - Lolcats 'n' Funny Pictures of Cats - I Can Has Cheezburger?

to

going to narnia brb - Lolcats n Funny Pictures of Cats - I Can Has Cheezburger?

Then refresh (F5). For some reason, IE has trouble handling a folder/filename containing these characters.

The 2nd URL uses some sort of funky Flash embedding which UR isn't able to capture.

Adrian Williams Since I bought it many offers ago, I use it daily. Very flexible. In fact I'm probably not getting the most out of it. One thing that I think lets it down is the weak text formatting, tables and minimal spreadsheet functions. I'd like to have ultra recall manage my projects and have child text files as individual letters and invoices so each project can be self-contained. I guess it's not a full-blown word processor so I may be expecting too much. Support is good and the forum is well populated.

Wy review may pick out the weaker side (my opinion) but the strengths far outweigh the weaknesses. just be sure to back up up your files though. I've had a couple of instances when the file couldn't be re-opened after a premature shutdown and had to rely on a backup. After this hiccup I looked elsewhere for an alternative and - I couldn't find one that does so much in one package.
In summary, download the trial and take a look. It's a lot to get your head around initially but worth the effort.

Mitchell Kastner I linked an author to an article and the author became a child of the article. I then linked the article to a note I had made from the article and the article with the author became a child of the note. Perfecto for doing scholarly research, no? No because when I exported the note to an RTF document, I was hoping that the article and the author would be MERGED into the note. How else can I use the note for my own writing if I cannot cite the note?

So UR has the semblance of a relational database but not all of its functionality because for sure you can merge fields from related tables into a query or subsequent table.

If I am in error about UR please set me straight because it's linking ability make purchasing it a no brainer for me.

PC USER The workaround is to select the 'author' and all its children in one go, with the down arrows

File-Export, Text items to a rich text (RTF) document

So, if I print a report, then a letter, etc., I must manually reset all appropriate settings each time, since they are not the same with different forms of outputs, and since the checkboxes are toggles, not different boxes for yes and for no, it's not even possible to make the letter / report / etc. settings with external macros since the outcome will be unpredictable, let alone the fact that most of these settings cannot be reached by alt-key combinations, but only by mouse. Do you plan to enhance these settings panels for export and especially printing, in view of the fact that for office use, this is an absolute necessity?

Stephen Cohen Well, I installed the pro trial version and tried importing 3 web pages. The speed is now much better--comparable to MyBase. Two of the Web pages imported without problem. However, the third was formatted differently and had some text overwritten by other text, making that portion unreadable. MyBase imported all three pages without problem. K X This is the first program which I hoped to see offered for a second day, with one of those notes: "Due to the overwhelming response .... has agreed to extend this deal for another day."

I downloaded the demo on Monday, the day of the sale, and tried it for an hour and had a hard time getting the hang of it, and it seemed to overlap a lot in function with several programs I already own (TreePad and Surfulater to name only two). Unfortunately, I was also influenced by the dismissive "review" on the Donation Coder "Notetaking Software Roundup #1" web page into not picking up UR.

After a good night's sleep, I tried the program some more and have grown to like it, and am especially impressed by the huge number of options for importing different file types and from a range of programs.

I hope Ultra Recall Pro is offered again soon at Bits at a discount. Maybe it can appear on the Every-Day Deals page? (How does that work?)

R A I'm interested in Ultra Recall but am wondering how it compares to MyBase. Does anyone out there have experience with both apps? Which one would you recommend? I am looking for:
-- ability to capture web-pages or clippings from web pages.
-- annotate the clippings I take from web pages with my own notes and ideas
-- open multiple trees (multiple databases) so that I can keep different topics in a separate database
-- the application must be rock-stable so I cannot lose my data.

PC USER Without a doubt I would say that UR is the better more mature product. However you can do all that you describe in your comment with 'both' products.

Generally, both capture web pages accurately.
And I cannot recall ever losing data with either product.

Note, there is no size limit with UR. Mybase 5 is limited to 2GB per database. (I have no idea if this will be the case for MB6)

Also, everything is contained in solely one file in UR i.e. the urd file;
whilst Mybase maintains two files, the database file and its corresponding index file.

The main issue with both products is "Support".
That is, their development is now VERY SLOW.

I came across MB because I was looking for an alternative when UR informed the public that support of UR was being 'scaled down'
Note I said, 'scaled down' not terminated.
UR is still be actively supported however very slowly
i.e.

4.1b was Released on December 3, 2009
4.1c was Released on March 22, 2010
4.2 was Released on August 10, 2010
4.2a was Released on February 27, 2011

Please see: http://www.kinook.com/For...y.php?f=27

However, MB hasn't fared any better, that is:
Mybase 6 has been promised since 2009!! -
(See Keith Anderson's comments, etc at

http://www.bitsdujour.com...ddons-pack

under 28 Older comments)

So that's the issue!! UR is excellent, there is nothing better. However the development of the product is slow.
MB 6 is nearing its final release according to
Wjj Software Vendor - Thursday at 6:31am (Aug 4)

So, if you want a tested product with a solid and proven track record, choose UR.
If you want something different, with the hope that because it is a newly developed product, it will be well supported;
maybe you should wait for MB6.

The choice is yours :-)

K X I'm also interested in both programs and will pick up both when they are available again on Bits.

PC USER, I was wondering about your definition of Ultra Recall as "more mature", "with a solid and proven track record" and MyBase as "newly developed," since--from what I can tell from the developers' websites--that Ultra Recall came out initially in 2004, and MyBase has been around since 1998 and has a huge list of well-known companies and universities as customers.

Ultra Recall Pro does seem to have built-in support for importing from a greater number of other programs, which is rally appealing.

SoftCollector I am new to this kind of software, but I fail to see how this is so useful? If you cannot organize yourself noone else will. And keeping everything in one database also means that all can be lost with the corruption of that same database. It is an inherent risk with all software that states it can manage "all in one".

R A Its a bit of a toss-up between myBase and Ultra Recall it seems.
Im leaning towards UR mainly because it seems that support will be better because UR has a discussion forum.
Most important to me:

1) to be able to clip not only whole pages but selected sections of web-pages and annotate them - write my own comments and descriptions about them (so-far I've not figured out how to annotate web clippings with either application)

2) avoid any vendor-lock-in. I need to be able to get my data out. One day, I will be able to use the cross-platform open-source apps KeepNote or CherryTree if they ever develop far enough. I will return to Linux at some future point.

3) no problems with stability or data loss

4) an app that will not be abandoned by its developer and leave me and my huge database stranded.

Any other suggestions from experienced users of these two applications?

Pavi Johnson Hi, I missed that last offer for Ultra Recall, but ended up buying it at full price anyway. When comparing to similar programs like MyInfo, Mybase, etc, UR came out on top.

Here's what I use it for: GTD (getting things done), email archives, webpage archive (with firefox addin), document management (PDF, etc), organizing research, notes, personal records, passwords, and work projects... basically all the info. I want to save and access.

One strength of UR over similar programs is that using forms and attributes, you can store any kind of information in tabular form, with fields for whatever you want. Hence, it is possible to make nodes that track your recipies, doctor's visits, book collection, journal, passwords, inventory, etc. It does take some time to learn and set these up to your personal needs, but it's worth it.

Integration with Outlook means that you can automatically archive your mail, as well as sync tasks. I have recently discovered that it can also be used as a writing environment since MS Word, Excel, PPT can all be viewed inside the UR interface as well. So you can write "Chapters" inside of the tree structure, with links to all your research and notes.

Another key feature is that all items, including document/PDF text, are indexed. Searching is Boolean and extremely robust, and searches can be saved.

As you can guess, I highly recommend UR. It is flexible and powerful, which requires a bit of learning and optimization to get the most out of.

Best, /Pavi

Hilary User If you need flexibility and control - if you want your software to adapt to your way of working rather than vice versa - UltraRecall is ideal. I've been using it daily for about five years. Strongly recommended!

(Only, Kinook, I really wouldn't mind paying extra for an upgrade that included a fully-featured, Gcal-integrated calendar.)

Dexter Bell Just as with Hilary Barrett above I started using Ultra Recall over five years it quickly an essential part of my business and personal life. I have several UR databases, one for business (mISV), one for all the registration information for all the software I own and several others for disparate hobbies. For a hierarchical PIM it can't be beat.
I'm more than a fan I'm fanatical about it.

(Despite what it sounds like none of the above is hyperbole - UR is that important to me.)

Kyle A I guess technically it is correct. Maybe "at least two months" would be more accurate. I suspect that the text shown there is based on a set of options that isn't very flexible for different policies.

Merle One Hi,

I bought it a while back through BdJ and used it daily since It's invaluable to store and retrieve easily heterogenous data (mails, text, documents, etc.). I never encountered any serious error or loss of data, contrarily to some competitors (well one at least), and the support has always been very helpful.

Thanks to BdJ for making me discover it.

The only minor drawbacks I see are :
- no Mac OS version (AFAIK)
- Learning curve is quite steep, due the flexibility of this software

myBase captured the page with no discernible errors. UR captured the page, but part of the page was garbled. I used GoBack to "uninstall" UR.

Brad Really nice application use it everyday to archive articles, facts, links to key information. It really became an indispensable tool in my software application toolbox. Easy to retrieve the data. You'll not be disappointed with the software.

Many of us need an easy straightforward way to catalog, categorize, and retrieve, crucial tidbits of online information. I used it to catalog and organize the myriad of informational resources I was seeking when I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin s Lymphoma. This tool made it much easier to get my head corralled around the data I was gathering.

It helped me very quickly, get to what I was looking for. It was a great assistance in facilitating my own education for Lymphoma. It really helped me to put together the right questions for the Doctor.

Choosing the right treatment is critical to a successful outcome. I am in complete remission currently so if you need a good way to keep track of the plethora of information that we get hit with everyday. This is a perfect tool.

Cheers, Brad

Preston Mitchell Hello Kyle,

Congratulations on the release of UR v5.

I have some questions.

I have UR v4 Pro. Is there an upgrade price? Or maybe you might add the PRO version for a discount on Bits?

I noted that a new feature in v5 is "Send IE9 user-agent string instead of IE7". Does that mean UR v5 won't work with IE8? Remember that XP users are trapped with IE8 (can't upgrade to IE9).

That's it. Please reply.

Thank you,
Preston

Kyle A The upgrade price is not discounted, but you can purchase a full license for less than the regular upgrade price on BDJ instead.

UR works with IE8. It doesn't use IE itself to capture a web page, but sends the IE9 user-agent when capturing.

Bill Blackledge Tomas, ideally you need an answer from Kyle, but:
- Databases can be stored on NAS
- UR is licensed per User, not per PC, so it seems reasonable to install on a couple of PCs and access the NAS data, provided you are the only person doing so.

Bernhard, I agree that the V5 update looked pretty sparse, not particualrly a major version update. However at these prices, with this product, I guess it is worth going for.

Kyle A @Thomas Leidinger: A "Transaction has been Declined" error means that your transaction was declined by the card issuing bank (the transaction will not be charged). A general decline can occur for many reasons, such as insufficient funds, the expiration date is wrong, card number is incorrect, etc. Unfortunately the card issuing bank does not give us any information regarding the reason for the decline, so you will have to contact the credit card company for any details. So far, this problem has always been rectified when the customer contacted the card issuing bank to resolve the problem. If contacting them doesn't help, contact us at @support@kinook.com and we'll discuss other means of payment. Thanks.

Preston Mitchell Kyle,

Thank you for answering my previous questions. I just purchased v5 Pro from here. (How extraordinary that the Bits price is less expensive than the regular upgrade price.)

Question please.

I am sure that v5 databases are backward compatible with v4 databases, yes? That is, a database generated in v5 can be opened in v4, right? (I previously persuaded a few clients to buy v4...and now I transfer project & research materials to them via a UR database file. That's why I need to be certain.)

Again, congratulations on improving what is the world's best 'tree' database software.

Preston Mitchell FYI to ALL: Ultra Recall is the World's Best Internet Research Tool!

THE HIDDEN BEAUTY Of UR is that it can serve as an extremely effective tool for web research.

UR includes the option of installing a toolbar on IE that captures and sends full web pages (or just the link) to the UR database of your choice.

When I research a subject, I create a database for that subject...and then simply send all relevant web pages to that database. Then UR allows me to easily create folders and thus organize my research (web pages) into sub-categories. UR makes saving and organizing web research so very fast and simple.

Prior to UR, I used MetaProducts Inquiry Pro, which is pretty good too, but UR's ease of creating unique databases for subjects blows away Inquiry Pro.

FOR INTERNET RESEARCHERS, UR Pro is the best $39 you will ever spend. (Also, UR is the best software for file management, which is its main purpose. So, the ability to use UR as a research tool is pure gravy.)

Preston Mitchell Kyle -- Does AV software effectively scan UR databases?

I have a virus infected UR database that contains critical data. I am not sure what to do.

I ran several different AV software scans on that database. Some infected files were identified...which I eliminated after running UR in a VM (to contain the virus). But I wonder if I can trust that database to be safe now.

MY QUESTION IS:

Can UR databases be effectively scanned for infected files?
Or does the database 'container' block, so to speak, a thorough AV scan?

Your answer will be deeply appreciated.

Thanks,
Preston

Brian H For Kinook Software- your product looks very good! But why such an unfriendly upgrade policy?: "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 2 months. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will not be discounted." Free upgrades are typically offered for a period of 1 year after purchase, or until the next major new release (eg. v. 2.0 - v. 2.9). And then to not offer current users *any* discounts on future versions of the program ... this just seems "customer-unfriendly" to me (speaking as a software consumer). Your product looks so good- I am hoping that you will keep an open mind an perhaps re-think these rather stringent upgrade policies for future offerings. There is a saying in retail sales that it is far easier to keep CURRENT customers (by presumably keeping them happy) than it is to recruit and find NEW customers. Thanks. -Brian

Peter C1 According to "The Fine Print" tab: Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 2 months. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will not be discounted.

Q. Is the update / upgrade policy as stated above correct?

You must either think that Your software is either BL**DY FANTASTiC & UNiQUE, or, Your company really doesn't care that much about retaining a "locked in" customer base to "Ultra-Recall 2".

Q2. What are the chances that You'd actually release any updates during the 2 month FREE Updates period?

If, as You said in a reply above [Thursday at 4:18pm], it is CHEAPER TO BUY NEW than to Buy an Upgrade, I can only assume that a good proportion of UR2 customer look for alternatives elsewhere after the free update period has expired.

I for one am very intrigued and will attempt to trial the software before the promotion period expires to see what is so special to warrant such an unreasonable update/upgrade policy.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens Just look at the website (http://www.kinook.com/order.html) - there *are* discounted upgrade prices (50% as "i am quant" stated). As to the free upgrades: I'm quite sure that this refers to major versions. Minor versions are free until the next major version (and are normally called updates, not upgrades). At least I could get all updates for my UR Pro 4 (that I purchased via BDJ, too) for free.

So I guess the people from Kinook were just a little distracted when entering the policy here. ;) And if I'm wrong and this is a specialty of the "BDJ license" for UR: Just wait for the next promotion here to purchase the upgrade to version 6.

I'm now using this offer to "upgrade" to version 5, thanks for the promotion! :)

Kyle A Major releases are always 50% off the regular price for owners of prior versions.

We didn't write "...upgrades will require additional payment, which will not be discounted," but what I think it means is that the the BDJ offer does not apply to upgrades.

Major upgrades are every 2 to 3 years, so less than $25 per year to stay on the current release. Or you can wait for a BDJ discount and purchase that instead of an upgrade to save $5 a year more.

Mark Johnson I have a license for version 4.x but didn't upgrade to 5.x, and I no longer use the product. There are many things about UR that are ahead of some of the competition (forms, vars, templates for example). Unfortunately there are also many things that are behind the competition (the editor/viewer, for example). If you are likely to use the features that UR has but the competition doesn't, then UR is a great choice for you.
The reason I didn't upgrade, and no longer use the product - the updates to the product are few and far between. If a serious bug is found then it is addressed rapidly, but don't expect customer requests for needed feature updates to be addressed.

I would say try the product, and if you can make use of the features it has that other products don't, then it's an instant buy for you. If you try UR and find that it is missing features you would use, don't expect those features to be added.

I'd also recommend taking a look through the customer forum at kinook.com/forum . Note that there is one customer there that tends to dominate threads with messages that drone on and make no sense, but if you ignore his posts the forums are a great place to get a lot of info about UR, how to use it, and how the existing customer base feels about the product.

In answer to questions asked repeatedly here: If you buy a major version of UR (current version is 5.x) then you'll get free updates until 6.x is released. Don't expect 6.x for a year or two, and don't expect much difference between 5.x and 6.x. Then when 6.x is released, there will be a discount for the upgrade (not just for two months). Of course, the upgrade policy could change, but this is how it has been.

By no means do I mean to slam UR. It is a great product, and if the current version meets your needs without any expectation of updates to it, then I recommend the purchase.

Lito Question about the encryption. In your manual it says you can only encrypt per info database. So does that mean if I want mostly everything unencrypted except for a few certain things, does that password info database show up on the data explorer pane?
For Example:
My Data
-Notes
--Note1
--Note2
-Websites
--Web1
-Passwords -- encrypted
-Journal -- encrypted

Or are the encrypted info in the example above missing from the list and I have to load a new info database manually with a File-Open to get access to it?

Mark Johnson I should have included this info above:

Version 5.0 was released in mid-2012.
See the link from Kylie Alons above for the features that were updated when moving from version 4.x to 5.

Version 4.2 was released in mid-2010.
http://www.kinook.com/For...php?t=4609
It was the last feature upgrade before version 5.0. There were a couple of hot bug fix releases between 4.2 and 5.x, but no new features.

Versions 4.1 and 4.0 were released in 2009.
Updates included:
http://www.kinook.com/For...php?t=4223
http://www.kinook.com/For...php?t=4091

The roadmap for future UR development is here:
http://www.kinook.com/For...eadid=3204
Before 5.x was released in 2012, the last update to the roadmap was in 2009. I do not believe the 2012 release included any items that were on the roadmap at that time.

Mark Johnson @Lito - UR does not support encryption at any level other than the entire database.
However, some users have worked around that limitation by creating an InfoItem that actually links to an external, encrypted database. Then you can include a templated child item that is actually an entire encrypted external database.
See:
http://www.kinook.com/For...encryption

This is an example of where UR is advanced compared to much of its competition. However, it is also an example of how complex it can be to do many of those advanced features, and how much of a learning curve there is to do them.

bvssunnydale (1) Under "fine print" it says that UPGRADES ARE FREE ONLY FOR TWO MONTHS. That's extremely stingy of the manufacturer and I wouldn't seriously consider it unless it was the standard minimum of a year's worth of updates (many products offer free until next full iteration/version, some free for life). I have ver 4.1 which I've never used but thought I'd try eventually; (2) Is there a URL where I could compare the latest ver 4.x with the current 5x? and (3) I have and very much like/use askSam pro. Does UltraRecall import askSam as a single document per UR page (I'm just wondering about how it would divide up the 21K+ docs in my 275MB askSam file. Thanks very much.

Mark Johnson @Michael F - I currently use RightNote Pro (http://bauerapps.com/). My use of this type of program is mostly to keep track of business rules, plans, how software works, and prioritization of (and instructions/notes for) work items. I also use it at home to keep track of hobby projects, plans, studies, etc.

It really depends on what you would use the software for. If you need the templating and more advanced features that are in UR, then it is the best choice. RightNote doesn't offer a lot of those things, and doesn't do web clipping / webpage archive nearly as well as UR and some others. But RightNote does have spreadsheet notes, much better RTF formatting, source code notes, EverNote integration, multiple trees in one database (not just hoisting), and a slew of other features that people have been requesting in UR for years. Plus you can email the author about a feature you see that's lacking, and he'll respond right away and also likely add the feature in an update faster than you'd expect.

If UR did a little more "Let us take a look at what the competition does better, and incorporate those things into UR" then I'd be back on the UR bandwagon instantly. It is a great product; it really just depends on how you use this type of software what is the right choice for you.

- Am on Windows Vista Service pack 1
- was using UR internal browser
- selected text and right click
- IE version is 7.0.6001.18000

Will also read the urls you provided for this issue

Surprisingly when I capture from IE - the capture is somewhat better and more predictable.

Tried Firefox - from Firefox the capture is blazing fast.
However from Firefox the page title is not set on the item in UR.

H. H. Hallo,
when testing verson 5 portable the following questions occured:

1. does ultra recall pro support ms office 2010 files (docx,xlsx,..)?
RightNote seems to handle them without any problem and can show excel files as spreadsheets (it didn´t work with my files)

2. does ultra recall pro support open document files?

If ultrarecall does not handle xlsx, docx, open document files properly at the moment - will this be improved within version 5 in the near future?

3. may there be an export to pdf (not pdf as printer, but as really pdf file with ability to show/click embedded links avilable next ime?

4. I also think that UR is very slow when capturing websites (windows 7 home premium, 64bit, 8GB Ram)
is there any improvement possible?

I think UR has many intersting features - and if it would have solved the above problems, I´d prefer it to RightNote.
But at the moment RightNote seems to have a bietter support of various file formats (import, export) and is much faster on savint websites or parts of websites

with kind regards

Jon User Kyle, I spent several hours today running an evaluation of this software for use as a repository of investment due-diligence information for my research and recordkeeping. So far so good - It appears you have done a very comprehensive job and the detailed templating makes this far more functional than my prior method which was much more manual, i.e. combining links to folders, docs, spreadheets & web pages in MS One-Note pages. The eval went so well I went for the Pro version. I hope to see ongoing development of this product so it remains compatible with more and more file formats as technology marches forward.

A high-five to a fellow Coloradoan!

PS, I concur with the poster above about PayPal. It definitely provides more comfort to the average consumer to buy that way rather than spreading their credit card infor all over the internet.

peter schleifer In answering a roadmap question above, you said:

Enhanced calendar pane
Keywords pane / tagging improvements
Add columns to Data Explorer pane
Custom sorting in tree

Now this "Custom sorting in tree" intrigues me vary much (whilst for others, tagging perhaps is more important): What do you mean about it? By which attributes such a tree would be sortable, and would it sort any entry in the tree, regardless of its current indentation level? And I suppose (since if not, such "sorting" would not be of interest) that you can switch forth and back between "sorted view" and "tree view" then, or at least automatically reconstitute the previous tree view, after such sorting?

I try to put my question in other words:

By what attributes?

You do NOT mean sorting just the siblings under one parent item, but you speak of sorting all let's say 200 children, of ANY indentation level, of a given parent item?

And afterwards/alternatively, the tree, as it was before sorting, is not destroyed by this but is there, too?

When can we expect this feature? Within 12 months, or would this be too optimistic?

I'm asking since development of Ultra Recall seems to have been a little bit on the slow side, lately, but not-destructive sorting of the whole tree (or any part of it) would be a tremendously useful feature - if it was really available, that is.

Mariusz Lewandowski @peter schleifer:
"not-destructive sorting of the whole tree (or any part of it) would be a tremendously useful feature"

It is already there: in the Data Explorer pane expand the parent item with child items to be sorted, select any child item in the expanded list, right-click, select "Sort Siblings". The exanded items are sorted whilst the whole tree stays intact. To unselect "Sort Siblings" option: Shift+Ctrl+Up/Down arrow to move any item up/down.

Brian De Bragança I can thoroughly recommend this software to anyone considering buying it. It is the best P.I.M., Notes and Projects Organiser, Scrapbook and similar functions in its class and is better than One Note, Evernote and similar offerings by a long way. Its integration into Internet Explorer and Firefox and the Windows Shell works flawlessly and is a big plus.
If it has a flaw it is that it is not updated very often but it is already so full-featured (especially the Pro version) and easy-to-learn that you'll be satisfied with it straight away.
I have no connection with Kinook (the developers) and so this recommendation is completely voluntary.

H. H. Hallo,
some questions

1. is there a limitation of the database-size - where the program begins to become too slow, or instable? - what´s the recommended limitation of database size?

2. is there a synchronization feature for synchronizing between e.g. a Ultra recall Installation on pc or Notebook or usb-stick?

2. is there a possibility to set a page layout when using the note editor?
I think it would be a very useful feature since in many occasions the built in rich text editor would meet the requirements of writing an ordinary letter or own memos. But without the ability to format a page one has to export to an office osftware. If not yet implemented, will it be on your todo list?

2. No, but you can edit .urd files on a USB stick or transfer them between computers using file copy, a file sync tool, etc.

3. What do you mean by page layout? The rich text editor provides formatting capabilities (fonts, styles, colors, highlighting, hyperlinks, tabs, tables, etc.), and you can choose layout options for printing via print preview (margins, headers, footers, portrait/landscape, etc.).

JL Hi,

Is there any option to clear the history list and a way to go back to the default or to the desired UR saved settings?

It seems to me that UR has a lot of setting to customize. I would like to be able to save some of the customizations to be able to recall them back. For example, to be able to import web pages and only need to choose a desired importing profile from a list.

Kyle A Which history list? In the address bar or quick search drop-down, pressing Delete remove the selected item from the drop-down list (with the drop-down list displayed, use up/down arrow keys to select an item and Delete to remove it).

See here for backing up and restoring settings: http://www.kinook.com/For...php?t=2935

What do you mean by 'a desired importing profile'? Using File | Import, you can save/select different settings via Save settings as/Use saved settings fields.

H. H. @ Kyle Alons
thank you for responding

regardin question 1) I read the Forum link where is written theoretical max of 2Tb, practical expierence with mostly 300mb, some 5gb. Since the article is from 2004, is there any more practical experience regarding the database size? 1gb e.g. can be a lot, when mainly storing text files, but not much space, when having to store Office documents with embedded pictures, pdf files,...
I was considering, if Ultra recall could be helpful for saving webpages, but since they mostly have pictures embedded, 5gb does not seem too much.
But perhaps inbetween the size, People have practical experience with databases larger than they have been tested 9 years ago?

regarding question3) The Page print preview is close to what I meant, but what I mean is a page preview already during writing, which allows to see, (without always switching to print preview) how much e.g. A4 pages the text one is writing requires. When writing in Ultra recall one has no orientation during writing (office programs allow to see the line - and pagebreak during writing).

Thank you for clarifying and apologize my mistakes in english language

Kyle A You should be able to store quite a few files in a 5GB db. I haven't heard of many DBs larger than that. I have two main databases. One stores all email messages, including attachments, for the last 15 years (~35,000 messages and about 400MB in size). The other is my main organizational database, including quite a few imported web pages, PDFs, text files, notes, etc. (~6,000 items and 100MB). I would imagine larger databases would be more manageable now with the faster hard drives of today.

There isn't a page layout view in UR while editing. You would need to edit externally in Word for that (Item | Open Document or Ctrl+J).

1. Is it normal to have registry entries and files within AppData\Roaming created when running the portable version?

2. And does it still hold true in 'backing up and restoring settings' on a portable installation, that you only need to back up the .dat and .ini files even though the above mentioned registry entries and files were created?

I would love to see a couple more document management functions in UR.... Which are probably outside the scope of what UR is intended to be.

One would be to have the ability to actually scan documents into UR. The other would be to have the ability to embed spreadsheets into notes. OneNote does have these functions, but it is otherwise a different animal altogether.

peter schleifer I had a good look at your roadmap (the above link), and I think that it lists very valuable items, and especially the (pending) keyword/tagging improvements will be of much interest to many people, as will be a better calendar/ToDo functionality and filtering in the tree, multi-db search and automatic calculations (addition of the values in a field in siblings, in the respective field of the parent item, first of all); of course, the question remains how long the latter improvements will take.

On the other hand, I always miss, even in this current roadmap, any mention of planned global replace, which unfortunately is a dealbreaker for me. I know you said it is not high on your priorities' list since it can theoretically be done with external tools, i.e. with (free or paid) SQLite interfaces (shells or GUIs), but then, UR is the only (otherwise very) professional outliner of my knowlege that asks its users to fall back on external tools in order to do "global replace" (this term also meaning any replace in more than one item at a given time, e.g. within a range of siblings).

Thus, I would be very interested in your giving some reason for your refusal to implement that very important and basic feature which is present in every notable contender (and in the "professional" version there at the very least): Why, in UR, would such a function be almost impossible to implement?

Also, I would like to mention that whilst (direct) "Formatting of items in tree" is rather further down within the roadmap's list, such formatting is even possible today, albeit indirectly, by creating special formats together with symbols, and then by hiding all those symbols (by an option which is available for that).

So UR even today has got all you need, even though not everything in optimized shape yet (cf. the help file improvements you rightly consider), and that makes it all the more annoying that such an otherwise good program (which is also very stable even with big data) misses such a basic function as is global text replace; I would very much appreciate your reconsidering this issue.

Visitor-2014 There are various problems which seem to have to do with a non-complete support of Unicode:

- It is not possible to create a correct alphabetical order of the items in the tree (Data explorer pane). It was tested with German words (latin characters, even when none of the words contained an "Umlaut") and with words with Greek characters. At the same time, the sorting of the same items in alphabetical order worked correctly in the list with the child Items.

Concerning the professional addition of "Ultra Recall":
- The mentioned mistakes in the alphabetical order in the tree continue in the index of the HTML version.

- But moreover the export to HTMl / Website (File --> Export --> Documents and item rich text to HTML) does not succeed at all in the following cases (tested with the category "Notes" and its child items [all of the category "Text"]):

a) when among the child items is one (or more) which has a German "Umlaut" in its title (= Ä, Ö, Ü, ä, ö ,ü). In this case the export of "Notes" would only work when I uncheck the box "Export child items (recursive)" (but of course then without any child items).

b) when among the child items is one (or more) that contains a Greek letter. (In this case not even the unchecking of the above mentioned box helps.)

In both cases (a and b) the error message says: "Error exporting item(s): File Not Found!"

So my impression is that the program at the moment is not suitable to satisfy the needs of users who would like to use it for another language than English.

Mariusz Lewandowski "So my impression is that the program at the moment is not suitable to satisfy the needs of users who would like to use it for another language than English."

I use Polish language inside UR with no problems. Sorting, indexing, import/export, etc. works as supposed to. Must admit I lost other useful functionality with upgrade to Windows 7 but afaik the problem is outside UR.
So as per my experience UR works ok not only with the English language.

Regarding sorting in the tree, see http://www.kinook.com/For...php?t=4652

Regarding the export problem, this is fixed in the latest download at http://www.kinook.com/UR/download.html (UltraRecall.exe 5.1.0.7 in Help | About after installing).

peter schleifer Above-mentioned stability of the program is thanks to the database it uses and does not extend to the (otherwise quite elaborate) search provided by the program; this means it happened that expected search hits were left out, from correct search orders, and tries in the forum to work this out were unfruitful, so you should never be entirely sure you get all relevant hits in search.

And as you see above, the developer, who in the past said, do search-and-replace by external tools (and to your own risk of course), and that implementation of such a basic feature was "not high on his ToDo list", does not even answer anymore when you kindly ask if he'd be willing to reconsider.

Thus I put high hopes in the competing (and evenly-priced) MyInfo from Milenix, which is regularly here on bitsdujour, too, and which has got a highly-responsive developer who's actively trying to provide his customers with every functionality you'd expect from such a program.

P.S.: I didn't understand from the above comments why suddenly Scandinavian characters would be sorted properly; I never succeeded in sorting special German characters correctly.

Thriftslut For those of you who are torn between ordering the Standard Edition and the Pro Edition, I would suggest you use your prior experience with database programs to make your decision. If you've never used a program like this before and all you want is a place to store and retrieve bits of information, the Standard Edition is probably fine. If you are familiar with such databases and want to do complicated things - e.g., write an entire book in the program, reduce distraction by hoisting notes, access individual notes from shortcuts or hyperlinks on the desktop or in other documents, etc. - opt for the Professional Edition at this price.

Here's some random thoughts based on my experience in using databases, including everything from InfoSelect in the early 90's to UltraRecall to Evernote to the current version of OneNote:

First of all, it's not easy to find a PIM that will satisfy you completely. Be careful about letting yourself get trapped in the time suck "vision quest" for the perfect PIM. (See http://www.bitsdujour.com...r-programs). All of them work, more or less, but it's not easy to find one that's perfect for YOU.

If you do buy the program, do not be discouraged by the learning curve that has to be surmounted before you can use all the program's features. You can get the program up and running quickly, but it will take time to get to use it at a high level of expertise. This is true of all powerful PIMs. That said, UR's documentation is quite good compared with Evernote or OneNote or many other PIMs and the quality of the documentation is one reason I prefer UR to all the others I have used.

Up until Version 8, when problems in development became acute, InfoSelect was the standard by which all such programs had to be measured. The older versions of IS fully deserved the cult that developed around the program. UltraRecall is the only modern program that comes close to the efficiency and effectiveness of IS.

If you are fully satisfied with OneNote or Evernote, you probably do not need a program like UltraRecall. If OneNote frustrates you because it promises a lot but fails to deliver, you will will find that UltraRecall makes OneNote and most of the other such programs (Treepad etc.) look kind of toy-like. In my own experience, UR actually interfaces better with Word than does OneNote - something to consider if you produce long documents.

UR's internal browser is really handy for doing internet research. Would love to have someone from UR comment about its security - how susceptible is it to attacks compared with Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.

If you are a PIM newbie, you probably cannot appreciate the practical importance of such Pro Version features such as hoisting. Once you master the program, these extra features are well worth the money.

Finally, Dropbox and similar programs allow you to sync your UR databases between computers, but there is no online access to your data as there is with OneNote or Evernote, where you can go online to edit your files. For me, this is an advantage, but for you it might not be.

Hope this helps.

Visitor-2014 HTML exporting of items with non-standard characters in their title works o.k. with the latest version. Thanks for the quick fix.

But for the lack of correct (alphabetical) sorting in the tree I do not see a solution until now. The reference to the thread http://www.kinook.com/For...php?t=4652 obviously means that I have to download (and extract and double-click) the file offered there (in posting #4). I did so, but this did not change anything in the existence of a wrong alphabetical order within the tree. Moreover I do not have a good feeling when I have to change something in the registry (by using the mentioned file) in order to achieve such a basic function as an alphabetical order.

Something else:
I find it a bit cumbersome to create simply a new item "Text". Maybe that I did not test the software enough, but I could not find out a method to make it with a simple mouse click (e.g. on some button). Regardless how I tried it (via tree, via button, ...), I needed two or three mouse clicks.

Neo Alive Hi

is there a way to get this layout? I would like the dataexplorer to have tabs of its own.

http://bauerapps.com/

Each group of notes has its own tab and the ability to get back to a higher parent if you click on one of the children.

I can only somehow get close to this working but it fails on getting back to the parent of a child which makes it time consuming and making me go back to rightnote again.

Your app really looks better but it seems it works more time consuming

Neo Alive @Kyle A. I dont think you are not getting what i am trying to say or i dont make myself clear. It has a child window. But it keeps the list and does not advance to the item loosing the focus in the list and the complete list keeps visible.

RightNote groups the notes in tabs and keeps the list of notes in the left pane visible. I dont have to click the back button or any other key to get back to the list.

Having the Notes in Tabs groups makes it much more workable then having them all on the left in your navigation pane with all the other stuff. Its more "ballast" & "confusing"

Within a tab in UR, the tree does remain visible with all the items visible after selecting a child item (unless you hoist the tree to that item).

_*_ Thank you for clarifying.

I have another question(s) about the program.

Is there a way to create multiple Tabs with different labels and information contained within them?

As it is now, upon click the "new tab" button (to the right of the existing tab), it simply copies the tab and the contents. If I delete the information in the newly created tab it deletes all the information in both tabs.

I am at a loss the purpose of the tabs as it is now.

It would be great to have say, in the left-hand pane a tree-list item titled "Trees" and then a number of tabs to the right with labels and information for things like, "Fruit Bearing," "Spraying Times," "Harvest Times," etc.

Also, can the standard version import websites?

Thanks for any help you can offer.
Jun 3 2015 at 8:43am Copy Link
0
Kyle A Within each tab, you can navigate, select, and even hoist (in the Pro edition) different items and locations in the tree. When you switch tabs, the selection and hoisting will be switched to reflect that tab's information. You can also lock a tab title to the currently selected item (on the Tab menu).

I'm not sure what you mean by "If I delete the information in the newly created tab it deletes all the information in both tabs." Yes, if you physically delete an item from the database, it will no longer be visible in any tab. But if you select another item in one tab, that item will be selected again when returning to that tab.

Yes, you can import web pages in the Standard edition, but the Std edition doesn't index the page content for searching.

Nick Kobe I am somewhat concerned regarding the database. Is the entire file stored in the database? Is so, what protection is built into the software to protect the database content from a database that becomes unusable? Is there a limit on the size of the database? Does the database size impact the system's speed? If files are stored in the database how do you export them should you choose not to use the software any longer? When exporting all the files in the database, assuming they are stored in the database, how are they names and into what directory are they stored? Thanks!
Jun 3 2015 at 9:52am Copy Link
0
Kyle A Yes, everything is stored in a single file (.urd file extension). It's a SQLite database, which is very robust and unlikely to become corrupted (of course, it's always a good idea to keep backups of any important files so that you can restore a good copy if you experience disk problems). Using a database is actually crucial to maintaining decent performance as the size of your data grows. Most of your questions are answered in the links at the bottom of this reply.

You do have the option of linking, rather than storing, documents in UR (and if located in a subfolder of the .urd file path, the file will be referenced with a relative path, so the .urd and linked files can be moved with the link remaining intact). The content will still be indexed, but the document will remain outside of the .urd file.
http://www.kinook.com/Ult...bjects.htm

Regarding exporting, you can always export all content stored in the .urd file, with any imported document exported in its original format. You specify the directory to export to (subfolders will be created when exporting recursively). An imported document will be exported with the same filename as the original file when it was imported. See here for more details:

Is it possible to have multiple tabs with unique titles and unique information in each tab?
I am not sure what the reason is to click and add additional tabs when it simply copies the current and all its contents.

Can I have a left-hand pane tree item with multiple right-hand window Tabs all different from one another with different information under each tab?

Thank you
Jun 3 2015 at 4:30pm Copy Link
0
Kyle A Yes, each tab can have a unique title and information. After opening a tab, you can navigate to any item in the database, hoist to a particular location, etc. Normally, whatever item was last selected will be used for the title of the tab, or if an item title is locked in a tab, that item's title will be used for the title of the tab. Hoisting is used to limit a particular tab to some portion of the tree.

For clarity, there's a lot more than "one feature" in the Pro version that's not in the Standard version.

Perhaps hoisting is the only feature you feel you will use in the Pro version, but there are certainly many more features in UR Pro.

@HJ B: You can import (or synchronize, in the Pro edition) all files in a folder recursively.

@LM Stafford: Here are the instructions on importing from TreePad. I think it will include images, but you'll have to try it to verify.
http://www.kinook.com/For...php?t=1069

@Mister User: You can select and then hoist an item in the tree (Tree | Hoist), and it will become the root of the tree in that tab (to limit what is displayed in the tree to a section of the entire tree). Unhoisting reverts back to the My Data item as root to show the entire tree again.

3. Could you please confirm that the 30-days return policy applies to Ultra Recall being bought through this offer at Bits du Jour, not only directly from Kinook at full price, as I have been denied return by one publisher in a similar situation in the past ?

Brent Carey My one BIG concern is the upgrade/update policy. It's only good for two months. Almost all other software companies that I have dealt with give you at least a year. That's not a great selling point.

Just my two-cent's worth.

I would appreciate hearing from the dev on this one. Thanks!! :)

Adolphe This : "A purchase includes all minor upgrades for the major release purchased. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted by 50%". Which is it ?

Adolphe Kyle,

I am aware of this page of your website. It does not answer my question.

You wrote to Brent Carey that the present offer includes free updates until the next major version, whith typically three years between major versions (but we don't know when the last major version was issued).

The "fine print" page on your Bits du Jour offer says there are only free updates for two months after purchase.

Those two statements contradict each other. One of those statements should be retracted or corrected.

Todd User I bought XYPlorer here more than 4 years ago. It is my "go to" program and is always open on my desktop. I use it all day every day and can't imagine doing my job and hobbies without it. It is SO much more than just a file manager.

The developer is constantly seeking input from users to improve the product. If there's something you need and don't find, ask the author. His developer's forum is always very busy and he's making so many changes to the program, that it's sometimes hard to get my suggestions squeezed in.

Bottom line: If you use your body of files a lot, or need custom scripts to work with your files, this is the program for you.

bvssunnydale Hi, your site says that UltraRecall "supports" askSam (an older, now defunct, PIM). I have a 550MB file of pure text [30K "document" pages, from one line to 100 "regular" pages]. I don't need support for all of askSam's indexing and tagging capacity but I do need to import all the data primarily so I can quickly search/find specific docs. Can UltraRecall import a file of this size and, if so, can you provide a link as to how I could test it out? Thanks.

Wocius Wei Version 5 was released on June 8, 2012. Version 5.2 (on offer here) apparently was released on April 30, 2015 and received a dot increase on January 17 of this year. Note that the developer wisely wrote above "There are **at least** 3 years between major releases" (my emphasis).

Kinook's website defines major vs. minor releases:

"All minor releases (i.e., 2.0 -> 2.1) are free for licensed users. To upgrade from an earlier version, download the latest version and install over your existing copy. There may be an upgrade fee for major product releases (i.e., 2.x -> 3.x). Purchases within 60 days of a major product release are eligible for a free upgrade to the next major version."

Todd User Sorry. I read one name and thought another. My earlier "review" of this product was for a different product. I *do* have and use this product, and here is the review for it:

When I first bought UR, I played with it for weeks trying to make it do what I wanted. Everyone praised its versatility and usefulness, but I just couldn't figure it out. It has an immense learning curve.

A couple of years later, I identified a need for a database that UR seemed well suited for. I took my time identifying specific needs and finding how to solve them in UR, and after about a month of setting it up, I now have the perfect database to suit my needs. Where there were a few failings, I wrote the author and after a brief Q&A, was given what I sought. The author hasn't released a meaningful upgrade in a long time, so if you want a program that's actively supported, try something else. That said, the program is so capable, that there is little need for upgrade.

In conclusion, it's a little clunky with a steep learning curve, but with a well considered setup, will do anything you could ask.

Sara User It's been a long time UR has been on bits; it's been an even longer time current version 5 is on the market, so version 6 is imminent. Fine print: "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 2 months.", so it's obvious buyers will have to pay for the upgrade (then, according to past update policy, that version 6, with all its sub versions, would be available without upgrade cost again?)

In other words, general / past (?) upgrade policy of UR is / was (?) very acceptable (but is also to be seen in light of the incredibly low development pace of this tool, for many years now, not just recently, so users - see the forum, among other things - weren't that much happy with the paid upgrade between 4 and 5, but then, some were even "forced" to upgrade since 4 doesn't work beyond W7: smart move indeed, replacing intro of enticing new funcs, haha!).

Whilst this current offer here is as follows (all prices rounded): 40 bucks here plus 50 bucks in 2 or 3 months (when version 6 will come out, and IF it's worth it then; well, even version 5 works on W10 for the time being, post author knocking on wood here...), makes it 90 bucks for you instead of 100 for buying then, always plus VAT for people under the strain of the European Maff (or more precisely, 39 plus 49.50 = 88.50 instead of 99, which is 10.50 off for NOT knowing of version 6's new goodies incl. their possible use for you).

These 10.50 are thus sort of a "reverse assurance", or in other words, they're a quite lousy bet.

Hence my kind asking for a list of new functionality to be included into v6, let's say within the next 15 months or so. ("To be included" not meaning some road map entries on intensive care or now in brain rehab, but wonderful things that will really come down to us, short-term.)

Sara User @Kyle A: Well, it's time, then! Users are waiting for new things (see the road map / comments).

But, since your traditional update/upgrade policy was: -50 p.c. for each new major version (2.0, 3.0...), free within that major version, with major versions coming every 4 years or so - which, with really active development at least, is / was VERY reasonable in the past -, whilst here on bits, it's 2 months for "upgrades": why such a weird limitation, then, and what does it mean?

For your usual "all updates within the current major version (5) free, upgrade to version 6 would be paid", IF 6 is not around the corner, why not say the above, adding "(6 would not be out but in 18 months or later though)"?

Instead, it's "upgrades free for 2 months" - the weirdest thing in upwhatever policies I've read in my life; since such an assertion tremendously harms business, it only makes (very doubtful at that) sense if you plan to issue such an "upgrade"

(I'd prefer the terms "minor (free) / major (paid) updates", and then "upgrade" for switches from a standard to a "professional" or whatever reason, or from MS Word to full MS Office and such things, anyway)

within that time. Ultra bad wording, then, if not bad timing, too.

@Kelly: ???: It's proven and official that v. 4 doesn't run on W10 anymore, but it not running on W7 either? Or speaking of ancient v. 3? Your "that version" is a little bit vague; in fact I think having read that (previous) v. 4 runs well on W7; didn't try for myself. (These seemingly minor questions matter here since v. 5 to v. 4 compared in functionality instead of specific "doesn't run here, doesn't run there", had been quite a disappointment for almost any user involved, if I remember well - as said, it's been some time since.)

MrZebulon I like UR and use it since a couple of years.A useful piece of software.
Development seems a bit frozen, no update for over one year.
What I am really missing is a simple possibility to search for double entries. This is a lack of feature for me!
But overall I can recommend UR.
Sep 19 2018 at 1:36am Copy Link
0
Sara User You probably mean "for ANY double entries"? For homonyms, you could search for titles like "* (1)", "* (2)", since in fact and afai remember, UR does NOT allow for homonym entries even in subtrees even far away one from the other, which is a big nuisance btw (if that hasn't been changed since; changing this would be easy).

For double content though, that would need some internal script, running at night e.g., I believe; I don't see sql functionality for this, so it would be lots of compares, probably to be sped up by hash values. It's certainly not "standard", and while it'd be perfectly possible, I don't know any such program that'd do it, currently.

(Technically) ditto, and more importantly so afai'm concerned, no trans-item search-and-replace, which would be much needed for many use cases indeed but is rare in that niche of the "industry" (MyInfo incl. 6 has got it, probably because it comes with its (exotic?) database format unknown to me, but MI's developer strives to get pending v. 7 more "standard" (allegedly SQLite then, as is UR's backend), so this functionality will possibly be lost by updating.)

"well baked already" could be a quality statement, or then, a hint at no real further development indeed, since if you leave something "well baked already" in the oven further, it'll carbonize - don't know for sure if that was Kyle's intention here, BUT Kyle's ultra laconic way of communication you see here is the same he offers in his forum, and that harms business, even more so since the help file is written in that very same style, which makes that many a buyer then will only a fraction of UR's functionality, by lack of more explicit explanation, e.g. for user-specific attributes, forms, etc.

Another easy thing to do in UR which has never been attacked, though: Current tree* item is boldened (standard being to change its background color), and that implies that boldening isn't easily available for persistently formatting such entries, ditto for other formattings, but there seems to exist some quite convoluted way to do it if you really need it, but which currently's only available to UR "experts" (see above), and I don't know if once you've "got" it, there are ways to speed it up, for regular use, or if there are not (if boldening or italicising an entry costs 1 minute each time, well...?)

*= technically, it's not a tree but a graph in pseudo-tree representation; functions well but can become unwieldy for really big data repositories, (available) hoisting (pouring sub-graphs into additional "tabs") then facilitating things a little bit, as well as up to 100 bookmarks, but all these navigational issues could have been realized so much user-friendly, with little effort on the developer's side; unfortunately, UR is Kyle's hobby, his main interest being software for developers.

Only half-baked, too, web browser and e-mail integration e.g.: In UR, it's all these micro-developments not followed thru the end of their respective (ideal) paths and the absence of the developer's interest to go that extra tenth of a mile now, too, which is infuriating: You always see the potential for real splendid software, but you always just picture, never experience that.

Now let's be perfectly clear on this: The big majority of today's PIM users wish their stuff being available on the road, too, and traditional 2-pane outliners like UR and its competitors don't offer that, by their architecture ((mostly SQLite) desktop database plus elaborate frontend which displays that sql data in "tree" form).

So in order to fulfill these additional user wishes having come along with mobile phones and slates not working on Windows, additional development efforts more or less from scratch would be needed, and thus, the market for desktop-only information management not growing anymore, Kyle obviously doesn't see market value in additional development.

And while that should be particularly true for elaborate agenda functionality - there, the missing mobile "part" of the system would become even more urgent -, very unfortunately, that has also be true for things like the missing, easy, formatting of "tree" entries: Kyle's disenchantment with that mobile-phone driven PIM market shift becomes infuriatingly blatant there.

EDIT: I was possibly mistaken re the impossible homonyms, perhaps that's only an import phenomenon, and then you could rename identically? Anyway, the items get ID numbers even on import, so I don't see the necessity to rename to "something (1)" to begin with. Also, this reminds me of the fact that whilst search-and-replace for content-parts (i.e. substrings) is no sql functionality, the same for whole (e.g. item title) fields is, but then, even global (or section-/search-result- wise) "titling" replace is not available in UR from what I remember.

As for "global" search-and-replace in content fields, since their content is stored in binary format (this is not a necessity for rtf data, but "standard"), even (otherwise possible) processing the UR file from outside of UR will not do the trick (for non-programmers that is), so for terminology-aware text data (be it technical data or fiction writing or in other use cases), you'd either run external macros on each item within the item sets where (possible) changes are due, or look elsewhere.

RS It was also my understanding that UR was no longer under development. Toward this end, it should be noted that UR's browser extensions no longer work in Firefox since it switched to the WebExtension format. When I contacted the developer about this last year, I was told that he wasn't even sure if it were possible to create UR's extensions in the new format, but that, in any event, it would require far too much work to do so, given that the development of UR had come to an end. If he has had a change of heart, I would be thrilled to hear of it. Please advise.

Sara User "but that, in any event, it would require far too much work to do so, given that the development of UR had come to an end" - oops! whenever Kyle's a little bit explicit, it promptly falls upon him!

But then, IF this is all so: Why - I asked about this above already:

"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 2 months. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted by 50%. Support is provided up to when the next major version is released." - mind you, there's "future versions" and "versions", and then "versions after that" and "upgrades":

With all due respect, but that's a bloody mess, ultra atypical for Kyle indeed.

I suppose (!) he means "updates within current version 6 are free [or just within 2 months?], upgrade to possible version 6 would be paid though, except within the next 2 months, but since it won't be released within the next 2 months anyway, I don't really why ever I mentioned this" - but what would I know?

"The links to the files ETC wont be new on the new machine ?" - "No activation required" to begin with (I mention this for other users), and then you would have to replicate quite some structures, but then it's perfectly possible (extensive forum info), and even somewhat different folder structures could become possible by external search-and-replace (see above); affected in-line (text) links would break though (see above again).

Sara User The problem with that strategy being that in Windows, c:\ e.g. is NOT a parent drive to then d:\, e:\, etc.: folder hierarchy within a drive yes, (even optional) drives' hierarchy no. That's the problem in general with today's desktop software (plural): Even replication to a laptop in order for data to become semi-mobile asks for strict observation of rules, and migration from an always growing d:\ drive to e.g. one consolidated volume consisting of several drives brings its specific problems, too.

RS It appears that Kyle has chosen to ignore the posts of those who have raised the question of whether the development of UR has ended or will continue, given that he has responded to other questions that have not addressed this concern.

If development has ended, then buyers beware: UR has not be updated for more than a year, and some of its features no longer work (e.g., Firefox browser extensions). And, as time goes on, this situation is likely to get worse, absent any assurance that such problems will be resolved.

It is one thing for a developer to decide to forgo newer versions, but quite another to fail to support the functionality of a current version that is being actively marketed for sale, especially absent any such disclosure. Misleading buyers into believing that such support will be forthcoming is as bad as representing on your website that applications are supported by UR when they no longer are (as in the case of Firefox).

I hope that Kyle reconsiders his silence on these matters, and makes it clear where buyers cab expect.

RS Last year, you indicated that it would be far too difficult to rewrite UR's Firefox extension, considering that you weren't planning on developing a new major version. However, if development has not ended, as you now indicate, how can you not resolve the Firefox extension issue, considering that integration with Firefox was a significant feature of UR that no longer works? That doesn't seem like development or support to me, especially given that Firefox is still listed as a supported browser on your website.

I would note that other reference managers have created Firefox extensions using the new WebExtension format, and released them as minor updates. The importing alternatives you offer are not solutions, but workarounds to use while the problem is being resolved. However, for reasons I don't understand in light of your claim that UR development continues, you have chosen to ignore the issue, despite the fact that you've been aware of it for almost two years. It seems to me that an explanation is warranted.

For me all those workarounds (listed above) are signs that the software isn't under development anymore. Just my two cents.

Sara User "However, for reasons I DON'T UNDERSTAND in light of your claim that UR development continues, you have chosen to ignore the issue, despite the fact that you've been aware of it for almost two years." (my formatting)

Well... ;-) As a probable user (? or just a prospect then and today?), you would know from UR's web forum that that's Kyle's usual habit, from which he makes some exceptions whenever it pleases him.

The ultra irony in all this quarreling over there, and which has been going on for some 20 years or so, is that Kyle's efforts (both in time and nerves) for rejecting ever-anew-upcoming even little demands from his loyal users, again and again over the years, largely outweigh his respective, alternative, REAL investments (in his software that is) he could have made instead, by just sitting down and enter those few lines of code which would have been needed most of the time: 2 hours, 3 with checking, the users are happy again, and it's done with, this way slowly and growly but inexorably perfecting software to the point of it becoming cherished beyond by some maso fan boys!

Those little things mentioned above are perfect examples for the viability of this possible, alternative strategy, instead of continuing to slap customers in their face in such a way a mother would systematically say no, no and no to a child she doesn't love anymore, and yes, it's obvious that we're speaking of lost interest indeed, but completely so.

This does not concern renewed FF integration of course, which would be some real work to do, but then, would have been a real step forward, for any user who's not all too disgusted by all those little things for which Kyle didn't even had 2 or 3 hours' time in the past.

As said above, Kyle doesn't expect too many new users making worth his additional efforts, for the reasons I gave above, and for PIMs' existing userbases, well, (always possible) export isn't that easy, reliable or complete, especially if you used, more or less extensively, the specific goodies any such program may offer on top. Yes, those are then all saved within the db tables, but when they cannot be re-imported elsewhere, you either cut your arm or accept you're stuck for good.

And all this combined puts the real need for further development efforts strongly into perspective - a quite lousy one for the user indeed.

Sara User @Kyle: Yes they can. Example 1, persistent boldening. Tree pane is obviously able to display formatting, and it seems there's a way to get to persistently boldened entries by some indirect way, so you just cut thru that detour and make the - existing - functionality available directly.

Example 2: simple dialogs for things similar to what's listed in your external Sqlite editors link above, e.g. 1) rename (current) title(s) x 2) to title y, for all sub-items of current item: 2 fields for user input, the rest being the simplest sql command code that is.

But that brings up an interesting problem: Since in UR you don't distinguish between "natural parents" and "adoptive parents" (as is done for symlink targets = original files ("natural parents") and their in case multiple symlinks ("adoptive parents"), see your links above) and thus have no barrage against recursion (as neither have implemented your competitors afaik), if the user is somewhat undisciplined when creating clones, many such sql commands could create unwanted effects on graph parts not foreseen by the user triggering the command.

So a "preview pane" becomes necessary, not displaying the final results, but the final selections the (here standardized, not user-amendable) sql command will work on: just a SELECT preview... which is already there, too, since user's got a "hit table"; depending on existing code quality, it'll be easy to streamline the generic functionality of that existing list view functionality by dissecting it from the specific search results functionality.

Then, and again, since those commands / dialogs would be standardized, not extensible by the users' further wishes in every such use case, we would need a "delete the currently-selected record(s) (multi-select of course) from the list view", in order to enable the user to manually discard unwanted "result" records from the set the "real" command, when triggered then, will work upon - again, this is generic preliminary work which then will be useful for "anything" later on.

We agree that making available an sql command line in UR would cause almost immediate destruction of the whole db; even with forced backup before triggering anything else than a simple "select" would have the same effect, mid-term, since users would then work on partially-destructed db's, without becoming aware of it in time. (The same would be true technically for opening the UR db within an external editor for destroying it over there, but this forth-and-back, of course, puts some strong - and deliberate - filter between unwary users and the chaos they could possibly cause.)

But my point is, with quite little preliminary work for making (internally) available the (already existent) sql-access functionality in a generic way, too, then it'll be very little additional effort to implement all sorts of little things indeed, be it for innocuous "selects" anyway, or be it for 2-step commands where the users first preview (and selects) the ultimately affected records, then give their ok for the "real" sql command to be triggered...

and to say it all, and in order to make this perfectly understandable for any user here, too: just the "todo" parameters would be stored from step 1 thru to step 2, whilst the original "select" parameters would be discarded in-between, the new "select" just working on every ID (= record identification) left within the (in case, "reduced") "preview" list view.

From the point in time these preconditions of generic, global, neat availability are met (and, as said, everything needed is there, just possibly more or less "buried" within more specific code), then lots of "little things" become easy and ultra speedy to implement - while it all remaining almost 100 p.c. fool proof for the happy general customer.

Btw, my remarks showcase how ultra important it is to isolate possibly generically useful code from its current specifics, and whilst every developer today strictly observes this rule nowadays, (very) old code parts could sometimes be difficult to uncompress; then, they'd be letter be left alone, while by copy and paste serving as quarry for a generic recode, for all new uses.

RS Kyle, so I take it that you've chosen to ignore my request for an explanation (in my previous post) as to how you can claim that development and support has not ended on UR, while steadfastly refusing to resolve the issue of Firefox integration, despite the fact that your website continues to claim that Firefox is supported? As I said before, the workarounds you've offered are not solutions.

Of course, if you fail to support changes in Firefox, the second most-used browser, how can we be assured that you will not decide to ignore other changes in other apps in the future? What if Chrome or Microsoft Office were to make changes that limited or eliminated other UR features or functionality? Might you choose to ignore these issues, as well?

If UR is still underdevelopment and/or is actively marketed, you have a duty to support your user base, and resolve such significant issues that arise from the evolution of supported applications. Simply choosing to ignore them, while simultaneously claiming that development and support has not ended, is not only misleading and contradictory, but insulting to your loyal customers who rely upon you to maintain the viability of your product.

bvssunnydale Like everyone (it seems) I have multiple computers (and, not that it matters, a previous version of this software - I ended up using RightNote but am open to a new version). Can I install this on multiple machines, if I don't ever use it simultaneously on more than one machine (the "license by user" implies this)? Thanks very much.

Egon User It seems the zoom is not persistent within a session. Instead of displaying any other page (item) with the same zoom level, Ultra Recall displays any other page at 100 p.c. again, which is too tiny. Please make it persistent for the session. It is not possible in practice to trigger the same zoom command a 100 times or more the same day.

Wearsie Jackson Yikes! It seems that a major version of this software hasn't been released in nearly 7 years! (V5.0 released 6/8/2012)

This was a powerful tool - any chance that a major version will be released soon?

Thanks - Weerz

@egon user: Good idea, we have taken note of your request.

@wearsie jackson: It still is a powerful tool. More updates will be coming.

Eduardo Amado Just a comment about your marketing strategies. You should not use a screenshot which shows a Calendar of "july 2006", and in a Windows 98 or XP window either. We are in 2019, and from Windows 7 up.

RS Indeed, UR is a very powerful tool which offers functionality that no other application does. However, it has failed to keep up with the times. While I see that a minor update was recently released--almost two years since the last--it appears that browser integration is still a major problem that has not be addressed.

Currently, only Internet Explorer and the old Firefox are integrated with extensions, forcing users to copy and paste information manually from their browser of choice to UR. The Firefox extension hasn't worked since version 57 was released, and the developer has resisted updating to WebExtensions, arguing that it may not be possible, and that, in any event, it isn't a "trivial" task. Clearly, other programs (like RightNote) have found a way. And, as far as I'm aware, no extensions for Chrome and Edge have ever been offered.

Perhaps the developer has had a change of heart, and is now dedicated to addressing these issues, but this isn't evident from the recent update. It seems to me that integration is at least as important, if not more so, than any of the matters addressed in the latest version. I know that I, for one, would return to using UR in a heartbeat if this integration failure is resolved.

MrZebulon Very powerful - OK, but no possibility to simply search and delete double entries.
Only from outside the program. A deal breaker for me.
It seems, that there is no continuous development anymore.
Only now and then.

Steven Avery I own Version 3 from over a decade back. The points about web integration are valid. I will also add that the editor has very little RTF. Generally we want color and fonts and such, and the ability to paste in a picture (dunno if IR has that.)

Kyle A @RS: Browser extension updates are on our todo list.

@MrZebulon: There should rarely be double entries, since UR will detect and create a logic link instead.

https://kinook.com/UltraR...dialog.htm

Create logically linked items for duplicate URLs: If checked, when a file or web page is imported that already exists in Ultra Recall, a logical link to the existing Info Item will be created instead of a duplicate Info Item. If the URL is still valid, the Info Item will also be resynchronized.

@Steven Avery: The text editor in UR supports fonts and colors and such. See screen shot at https://kinook.com/Downlo...colors.png

https://kinook.com/UltraR...editor.htm

@lisba f: That works in our tests. See

Kelly Hamblin Just wanted to jump in and say, I used this program for many years on my XP system. More recently I was again able to purchase Ultra Recall when it was on offer here at BITS. I am so glad to have it back.

Yes, it's a little glitchy, and yes it's a bit clunky getting it to store a website, but it is well worth the $39.00 that it can be purchased for today.

lisba f @ Kyle To come back to my comment about Unicode. Yes, I can cut & paste a text from another source to the program (although it appears not in the best form) however - and this is my main concern - I cannot WRITE in classical Greek.

Kyle A I googled "greek keyboard windows 10" and saw this:

How do I change my keyboard to Greek?

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Under Clock, Language, and Region, click Change keyboard or other input methods.
In the Region and Language dialog box, click Change keyboards.
In the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box, click the Language Bar tab.

Also see

https://support.office.co...5de6f4f258

I added Greek language, logged out and back in, and with the greek language selected, started typing in UR and got what looks like Greek text.

geo User @Kyle A
Currently using v5.3. I would like to purchase the latest version and would like to know if the following is possible. Can v6 be installed without touching the current installation and then be able to run both versions at different times of course?
The reason is for another user of the PC to have their own installation to use and not risk messing up my own copy. I know it would work if there is a seperate user account on the PC, but for the time being it would create a lot of work to reinstall a lot of other software and there is need to access identical stuff by both users at different times. Just wondering what is possible.
Also, what are the most significant differences/improvements of v6 over v5?
Great work by the way!!!

Pavi Johnson Ultra Recall is still the best outliner/info manager for Windows. I should know, I have active licenses to almost 10 of them!

The structure is so good that I typically organize everything without even using keywords (tags) via search, saved search, cloning, etc. since the searches can use any attribute including parents.

Kyle always replies when you have a question/bug/issue, and the program is extremely well documented.

If you use Windows and Outlook, again the integration is simply superb as a file manager, data manager, todo planner, contact manager/CRM, PDF library, and many more. You can also make your own templates with forms specifying fields, so the flexibility is huge.

Best, /Pavi

Kyle A @Chuck: All v6.x updates are free, which is at least 3 years of updates. A major update (v7) beyond 60 days from the date of purchase would not be free, but that is a ways off.

@geo User: You can install v6 to a different location than v5 and run both (but not at the same time by the same user).

See here for details on changes in v6:
