This is an application that I've really needed, but never realized it until now. You see, whenever I work, I keep the stuff that I'm working on stored in a directory on my hard drive, but I also need to frequently dip into graphics, templates, and macro resources that are stored on a different drive, in a different folder. I keep my own set of macros stored on a USB flash drive. The result is this complex ballet of opening and accessing folders left and right whenever I'm working - tedious, but a necessary evil. That is, until now.

Virtual Folder offers a new way of managing files that's intelligent and intuitive by creating a virtual disk that contains frequently used folders, but which doesn't impact any of your original files. Gone are the days of having multiple Windows folders open at once!

Using Virtual Folder is incredibly easy - just create a new virtual folder by right-clicking, then add your most frequently accessed folders to the new virtual drive. Your Virtual Folder drive can be accessed and used just like any other drive letter, even from the command line! Once you're done using your Virtual Folder drive, you can simply delete it and your original folders and files will remain unaffected.

If you work in an environment where every resource you need is on a different network shared drive, you can easily untangle the mess of drive mappings using Virtual Folder. Just create a new Virtual Folder drive, then add your network shares to it - you'll experience an increase in work efficiency almost immediately, just by changing the way you manage your files!

Steve Coppard BE WARY: There is no way to uninstall this because the uninstall command is faulty. It does not even work in safe mode. This is a big problem because the program creates a virtual drive that conflicts with other software and there is no way to amend this action.

Steve Coppard Wow! Very quick response and sincere thanks for your generous offer. I like the program and it would be a very great help to me but unfortunately it wants to use a Z drive for the virtual folder and my Z is already committed. If there were flexibility to configure for an alternative drive then I would be a very happy person indeed!

The install program will automatically chose an unused drive letter, if it doesn't work on your computer, please check your email, I've just sent you the steps to change the virtual drive letter.

Alexander Deliyannis The idea seems great and the service is impressive. There is just one thing that is not clear to me, especially given the line "without affecting the original files": if I make changes to some of the virtual folder's files, will these changes be made to their original locations as well? I will be downloading the trial version, but it would be good if this is made more clear in the description.

If you make changes to the FILES in a virtual folder, you actually operate on the original ones. But if you delete or rename the virtual folder itself, it won't affect the original folder.
The description is wrote by Bitsdujour, sorry that I didn't check it carefully enough and make you confused.

Chaim Krause It looks like you can only create virtual folders on the virtual drive that this program creates. And you can only create them one level deep. For example, it creates drive Z and you can only create z:\one and not z:\one\two. I was looking to create virtual folders anywhere, not just the root of the created drive. If this functionality was added, then this program would be much closer to what envisioned it to be.

Kevin P Downloaded and tried it out. It works as advertised but note the following.

You can only add folders to the virtual drive, not files, so while it does a nice job of letting you have folders from disparate locations in one virtual location, you'll still have to click between folders to get at your files.

You can only have one virtual drive. For me, this limits the possibility of working with multiple projects.

The install required a reboot. Annoying, but likely unavoidable due to Explorer shell integration. The uninstall also require a reboot because it left the virtual drive on my system in an unknown state instead of removing it.

As I said, it does work as advertised but, personally, I find a file manager that allows multiple tabbed windows, such as Total Commander, much more useful.

Thank you for your attention.
I'm designing a new structure of the program these days which would make some exciting features you mentioned such as virtual files and projects possible.
I've been using Total Commander for about six years and I agree that it's the greatest file manager in windows, but when I recommended it to my friends, most of them gave up in no more than five minutes: it's too complex! One of them said that in windows you should do things in a windows way: getting things done by a few clicks instead of difficult commands and countless hotkeys :-(
In many cases you need to open folders in programs, for example specifying a folder to save your file or choosing the location for user profiles, but a file manager can't do this for you. Another example is that I have to use the command line to compile some source code, TC can do nothing.
So, I believe Virtual Folder is useful for both normal and advanced users :-)

Mike G I was planning to post some of the same suggestions as Kevin P. Most importantly, either multiple virtual drives (with ability to rename the drives) and/or at least the ability to save and quickly switch between multiple "collections" or "projects". However, even a single virtual drive will be helpful for now.

On the TC discussion: Yes TC is powerful, but as a senior IT resource, dealing with many technologies and projects, I prefer focused tools that don't add unnecessary complexity (i.e. lots of features I don't use) to my workspace.

Based on tightly focused functionality, an enthusiastic, responsive developer and generous discount through Bits, I decided to add VFM to my tookit.

Some new features to be added:
1. Virtual files.
2. Multiple virtual drives
3. Allow users to create virtual folders in a virtual folder (map folders to non-root directory locations on the virtual drive )
I'll code them out as soon as possible.

Mary Wilson The program is not bad. Wish it had a better help section, and like the others, I wished it had ability to make more than one virtual drive for different projects. As the websight does not have a frequestly asked question section, I would want to use it on my laptop and my main system. Do I need one or two licences?

Kevin P @VF Support. Thanks for the reply. The future new features you mention will definitely make it more flexible and attractive. I also appreciate your point about applications that need to open and save files. You are correct, TC doesn't help in such a situation.

@Mike G. I agree that TC isn't for everyone, and probably not for a casual user, but as a software developer myself, I find it extremely useful and can't imaging going back to something less flexible.

If you are looking for something better than Windows Explorer, but not as "over the top" as TC, you might want to check out something like Free Commander or Directory Opus. Both nice tools.

Peter R When I have a total of 1,5 GB of virtual files in Virtual Folder, I also have 1,5 GB of space occupied in C:\AdminUser\.....\VirtualFolder.
Why is that?

This is the most frequently asked question :-)
This folder is for quick access, it just does some redirections as the virtual drive and doesn't occupy your disk space. Virtual Folder doesn't copy files, it only REDIRECTS. I'll add an option in the next version allowing users to choose whether to show this directory.

And: the next version seems to become quite more options. Will this version be free for the buyers of the current one?

1. Yes, it's just a link and doesn't occupy your disk space at all. You'll find that after creating a virtual folder, the used space of drive c: doesn't increase.
2. Registered users will get life-time upgrades for FREE.

Dave Johnson I tried out this application and I'm sorry to say was quite disappointed. For my purposes it doesn#t offer anything that I can't achieve with mounting a drive in windows. I have a PC with 8 drives on a network with other servers with 16 drives and 4 drives. Using the example of the 8 drive server, I've already mounted the 8 drives to a location on the C drive called C: / Data, hence the view I get is C:/data/Drive 1, C:/Data/ Drive 2, C:/Data /Dives3 etc. What I'm after is a tool that will allow me to see all the files in C:/Data, by creating a virtual folder that will display all the files in the various sub folders. Unfortunately I can't do that with this as the application requires a different name for each each virtual folder. What I'm after is a combined view which I can't achieve with this app.
