mike b This doesn't seem to have anything to do with the download.

tsad.dll is an advertising component that is often considered spyware. It may have been deleted on your system by an anti-spyware utility.

You will need to either reinstall PKZip (ensuring that your anti-spyware is configured to not mess with it) or install some other unzipping package (there's a boatload of free ones out there that don't have spyware)..

Roy Henson Hi,
I have tried out Winstep Xtreme and found it to be very useful and interesting to use. I havn't tried out all its features but I can see its potential and its a program I would use if I could afford it.

However, as I am a private user in my 70's I'm afraid that I can't justify this level of expenditure in the present time of rising inflation from my limited income.

Regards,
Roy Henson.

Dan keith Great software yet I dont know ANYONE that uses it. Just download and test. You will get some problems here and there and its just dated. They set a price that has been way to much and thats why its not much of a hit as it could be. Your better off with Stardock. WAY cheaper and more stuff to play with.

LOL I see there ad on wincustomize (stardock) yet go to Winstep and not a word about stardock..

Jorge Coelho [Winstep] Well, something's not right on your system then, but unless you re-install Xtreme we won't be able to troubleshoot.

Winstep Xtreme has thousands of happy users worldwide (look for reviews of it on Cnet's Download.com, for instance), and it's probably worth to note that our base performance test systems are:

XP on a PIII at 500 Mhz with 384 MB of RAM
and
Win ME on a PII at 300 Mhz with 128 MB of RAM

Winstep Xtreme obviously doesn't beat any speed records on systems as old as those, but it's still perfectly usable.

Jorge Coelho [Winstep] Here's something else of interest:

In about a week there is going to be a new release of Winstep Xtreme featuring a new, modern and super intuitive, User Interface with multi-language support (among many other exciting additions).

Terry FOYE I really wanted to buy this today and went to the Winstep purchase page via the link above in the 'Buy Now' button. I entered all the required details and chose Paypal from the drop down menu. However, after clicking 'Continue' on the first page, the next page asked me to provide my credit card details.

WHOA!

If I wanted to provide my credit card details, I would not have chosen to pay by Paypal on the drop down menu choice. That is what Paypal is for.

Sorry Winstep, but if I have to provide my credit card details to you, I can live without buying your product.

Jorge Coelho Yearly upgrade renewals cost only US $19.95 (remember the actual Xtreme suite price is $39.90), and they are in no way mandatory - nor do you get penalized if you don't renew on time.

Steve Newport Thank you for your answer.

I already know all that but I upgraded to Windows 7 and would be interested in an upgrade renewal.

Your offer here costs the same so for existing users there is no advantage unless another license is wanted.

So my question was simply if there will be also any discount for the regular $19,95 upgrade renewal.

Thanks again.
Dec 16 2009 at 7:09am Copy Link

Jorge Coelho No, sorry. For a suite of applications like Xtreme, $19.95 is already rock-bottom price, even for yearly renewals.

Since you're running Windows 7, I suggest you install the latest 9.12 public Beta 6 upgrade ( http://www.winstep.net/news.asp#wsx ) . Major new features, including a brand new user interface (UI) and multi-language support for the WorkShelf component. The only reason it's in beta is because I'm still working on the new NextSTART UI. You can have a sneak preview of the later here: :-)

http://forums.winstep.net...php?t=3106

Needless to say, anybody taking advantage of the Bits Du Jour promotion now will get the new version of Winstep Xtreme around early January - for FREE, since it will be released well within their 1 year period of free upgrades.

Michael M I've used these themes off and on for about 10 years. Was not all that interested in another since I don't use the ones I have.

But I installed it and fired the program up. Very impressive (and easy to use).

So I will be buying this. I have Win 7 on a netbook, so will look forward to your January update.

Note: I have YouTube videos too. There's a lot of jerks out there. Many leave rude, crude and moronic comments. I finally changed all my videos to requiring my approval before they can be posted.

You should do the same. It's not helpful and it's very distracting to read those morons' comments on your video. I don't see any benefit to your leaving them up.

I'd delete them and then change your settings to comments require your approval.

Just sayin.

Jorge Coelho Hansj, not sure what you mean, please contact Winstep support or join the Winstep forums at:

http://forums.winstep.net.../index.php

The download link at Bits Du Jour is for the official Winstep Xtreme 9.5 version, but we strongly recommend that you download and install (or upgrade to if you are already running 9.5) the 9.12 public beta, especially if you are running Skype 4.x, Windows 7 or a 64 bit version of Windows.

The 9.12 release adds multi-language support and a new User Interface to the WorkShelf and Nexus component of Winstep Xtreme. You can download and read more information about it from:

http://www.winstep.net/ne...ec_01_2009

WorkShelf in 9.12 currently supports the following languages (some translations are still incomplete, complete translations have been marked with a '*'):

Catalan, Chinese (Traditional)*, Croatian, Czech*, Dutch*, English*, Farsi (Persian)*, French*, German*, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese*, Portuguese (Brazil)*, Spanish, Swedish.

The *only* reason 9.12 has been released as a beta is because NextSTART still features the old User Interface in that version and some language files are incomplete. Otherwise it has been tested extensively for months before being released as a public beta.

Michael Mortimer OK people, I have been using this program for a few hours now. I have to rate this a fantastic program, especially at the Bits price.

If you like Apple's interface, for example, this program will give it to you. It is extremely intuitive and easy to use. I can see spending hours playing with it. Matter of fact I had to stop fooling with the settings so to get some work done.

I write tech articles and I will be recommending it to my readers. We all need some fun in our lives, so this will be talked about as something fun to do with our computers, albeit this program is a very useful utility.

But he needs to get rid of his YouTube video. Firstly, the background music has been muted by Google due to copyright violation, and second, the program is far better than what the video depicts.

For all the Bits people I suggest you download and try out the program, but don't forget to buy it before the Bits deal expires.

A bargain at $20, IMHO.

(By the way, I paid for this program like anyone else, so this is not a recommendation influenced by getting something for free.)

Jorge Coelho Thanks Michael for your nice comments.

I'll be making a new demo video and publish it on YouTube as soon as all the components in Winstep Xtreme feature the new User Interface (currently putting the finishing touches on the new NextSTART UI).

YouTube has a deal with the major record labels in which Youtube users are allowed to use copyrighted music in their videos. Unfortunately, a few months after posting that Winstep demo video, the Warner Music Group decided to get greedy and, as a result, all videos on Youtube featuring WMG soundtracks were muted.

As far as I understood it, YouTube muted the videos not on WMG's request but as a preemptive measure. WMG's loss, as YouTube is a great channel for promoting music (for instance, I lost count of how many times I was asked to name the soundtrack used on that Winstep demo video).

Jorge Coelho Yes, that's right. :)

I highly recommend that you install version 10.4 at this point - essentially the only reason it's still in beta is because the documentation is currently being updated.

Differences between the (still) official 9.5 and 10.4 are HUGE - besides the 4 foot long list of added features (especially in terms of 64 bit support), 10.4 adds a completely re-designed User Interface, much cleaner and user friendly than the one in 9.5. 10.4 also offers multi-language support.

Jorge Coelho Getting back to 'normal' Windows is a simple question of exiting Winstep Xtreme. One click and that's it. :-) You can start with the normal Windows desktop if you want, as Winstep Xtreme runs on top of Explorer and is a shell enhancement, not a shell replacement. It works just like any other normal application and in no way touches system files, i.e.; it makes no changes whatsoever to the Windows system. It's perfectly safe to run, and easy to operate, don't worry.

Louis H I can verify what Jorge said. I went ahead and downloaded V10.4 and installed it to give the thing a trial run. I like what I see and the fact that it is an enhancement rather than a replacement is nice as I am still exploring two other Desktop programs and value the ability to start and stop this one at will until such time as I decide which program I want to finally go with. (There are features in each that I like.)

I will say, however, that Winstep started out it's first time around by "changing" everything without giving me an opportunity to allow those changes to the visual look of my current Desktop. Nothing was, as Jorge wrote, permanent, and it was simply a matter of exiting the program and everything EXCEPT for my previous Wallpaper came right back.

The Wallpaper thing is minor in my view as it was simply a matter of changing it back - something I do "by hand" a couple of times a week anyway. More important was that nothing else appeared to have been changed and everything in my normal Desktop and Startup menus are still there and working as they did before my initial run of Winstep.

I really like that this newest version ESPECIALLY due to the 64 Bit support. I am using Win 7 Professional 64 bit and it is always nice to see developers of software redesigning their programs to take fuller advantage of a 64 bit system.

I'm going to get this one today to take advantage of the nice discount.

Jorge Coelho Louis, we feel the wallpaper is a very important part of a theme (a bad wallpaper can break a good theme and make an average theme great) which is why it gets changed as well.

This said, altough it's very easy to change back, Winstep is aware that this can be an annoyance, however minor. In the final release of v10, the first time it runs Xtreme will prompt the user if he wishes to change back to his previous wallpaper (after changing it, though, as Winstep theme wallpapers are generally very good quality) _OR_ it will revert to the previous wallpaper when you exit Xtreme - haven't decided yet which option is better.

You can also prevent Winstep Xtreme from changing wallpapers every time you switch to a new theme by setting the relevant option in the General Preferences tab.

Louis H Thank you Jorge.

My vote would be to return the wallpaper previously in use, returning the desktop to what it was before starting Winstep, but a prompt is nice as well, offering the option of keeping whatever wallpaper Winstep put in place. I can go with either.

Very nice program. Thank you for offering it here at BitsDuJour.

Jorge Coelho Thanks for your input and your nice words, Louis.

I would also be inclined to do it the way you voted (it would be easier, in fact, and require one less prompt to the user when he first runs the suite), if it weren't for the fact that Winstep Xtreme is the type of application that you want to be running all the time (i.e. not the type that you launch to do something and then exit once your task is done).

If the user likes his wallpaper that much, he will want to keep it *while* running Winstep Xtreme.

So what you have is:

Winstep Xtreme - Basic Edition : $29.95
Winstep Xtreme : $39.90
Winstep Xtreme Home Network : $78.95

Both Winstep Xtreme and Winstep Xtreme Home Network (a special multi-user license of Winstep Xtreme intended for home users who run between 2 and 5 computers on a network, or who would like to install Winstep Xtreme on their workplace computer as well as on their home network) are included in this promotion, but not the Basic Edition.

VLM Jorge, one of the listed features is "Open menus and launch applications via hotspots and screen edge bumps." For those of us who vastly prefer shortcuts over mousing around, will all the menus we create be shortcut-accessible?

Also, FWIW, I find your entire website extremely difficult to read. The use of a light grey font on a black background makes the text barely visible to me. I quite literally have to copy the text and paste it all onto a white background, then change the color to black. Readability over cuteness!!!

Also, the use of a black background, while perhaps "cool" and such, actually conveys a rather ominous feeling.

Just feedback.

Jorge Coelho Martin, resource usage depends on so many factors that it is impossible to give you a straight answer (your hardware, effects selected, current theme in use, if you're using animated icons, background blur, etc, etc...). Every application you run on your computer will take a slice of its resources.

Personally I think Winstep Xtreme's resource usage is very light (the browser you're using to view this page is likely using more RAM than Xtreme ever will, for instance), but I'm kind of suspicious in saying that. ;-)

Just download Winstep Xtreme and see for yourself how it behaves in your machine. The trial is fully functional and you still have a few hours before the promotion ends. :-)

There is also a dialog in the Advanced tab of WorkShelf Preferences that allows you to trade off speed for less memory usage, but I wouldn't recommend using that unless you have a system with very little RAM (e.g. 256-512 MB).

It is allowing me to clean up my desktop so things look very organized.

A few thoughts...
1. Is there a way to have the shelves be about half height when inactive (i.e. when they are not being moused over). This would make the desktop look even cleaner.
2. I really enjoy supporting software other than Stardock and their GOO system.
3. I am thinking you are/were a gamer as your mouseover effects Heal, Teleport, etc. remind me of an RPG effects! :o)

1. Not sure I understand: by default the Shelf automatically collapses when not in use so only the tabs are visible. If you don't want to see even that, then right click the left mini-tab, select 'Shelf Properties' in the context menu that pops up, go to the Behavior tab, click the Advanced button and select the 'Hide tabs when the shelf is collapsed' setting in the Auto-Hide section.

3. Actually those particle effects *are* RPG effects (check the Credits section of the ReadMe file for the Mr.Bubbles entry). :-)

_*_ Jorge, I guess it is the Dock portion of the program (still learning what things are called).

It would be nice to have them display at half-height until you mouse over them and then they spring to full-size.

The only other things I would like to see is Windows 7 Search feature right in the start menu again...it vanished when Winstep installed.

Thanks again

If you boot that often that it makes a difference, you can simply start Winstep Xtreme manually by disabling auto-start and then double clicking the icon on the desktop after everything has settled down.

Brad Hi Jorge,

My bad, thanks for the comparison link, I had made a earlier post with some additional questions and comments, so if you saw this please disregard, I see the differences now and my questions are all answered.

I was thinking this product might cause a performance hit on my Windows 7 system, but Xtreme actually performs remarkably well especially when you consider the graphical nature of the enhancements and feature set it brings to the desktop enviroment.

It's also fun to use, I really like the product, will purchase tonight.

Thanks, Brad

That's pretty strange since I live in Europe... I recommend the vendor to fix this problem as all lost sales add up.

Pavi Johnson Yeah, it is worth full price, especially for the Workshelf. This makes Windows soooo much easier to navigate, as it peeks out between programs and the taskbar, and gives access to programs, folders, files, recent, control panel items, etc.

MC I have to say that I have never posted here, but I picked up Winstep Xtreme here nearly a year ago and it was definitely a steal at the discount price. I will usually take Microsoft's offer to preview a new OS but I decided not to download Win 8 because I didn't want to have any issues with Winstep which I run on top of Win 7 x64. I like the capability to create docks in which I can create groups of programs that I want quick access to and the shelf is very easy to configure. There are a couple of minor bugs like the shelf at times covering my taskbar but that could be due to other programs (security or utilities) conflicting and when that happens I just click the "desktop" link on the shelf (which shuts down WEX) then I click on the desktop icon to restart it and it rights itself. I haven't invested any time in researching the solution as it's only a minor annoyance. Kudos to the developer for creating such a good looking and user friendly interface.

Jorge Coelho Ah, this is not the place to do technical support, but next time that happens try to notice what you did just before that might have caused it, then send an email to Winstep support. And you probably don't need to exit Winstep Xtreme, left clicking the Shelf's left-mini tab to open Preferences and then clicking the Ok button should do the trick. :-)

Kevin Haven My biggest questions concerns are

My PC is used for critical work and performance is for important, how does this impact performance?

What sort of files does it install and how easy is it to uninstall (some programs are notorious for being difficult to uninstall)?

Looks like a fab program, but really wanted to check this,

Cheers!
May 4 2012 at 2:07am Copy Link
0
Jorge Coelho Kevin, Winstep Xtreme works like any other 'normal' application, does not impact performance, it does not change any system files or interfere with 3rd party applications, getting back to 'normal' Windows is as simple as exiting it, it is completely modular (i.e.; you can turn off what you don't use), and uninstalling is as simple as exiting Winstep Xtreme and then going to Programs and Features (previously Add/Remove Programs) in the Windows Control Panel.

Also, don't forget you have a fully functional trial version on the Winstep web site, I suggest you give it a test drive now. :-)

Frank McGowan Can Winstep Extreme handle 2 monitors? I already use a 3rd-party product to give me a little more control over the second screen (e.g. it puts a taskbar on the 2nd screen). Does WEX give me some capability here, because I suspect it may conflict with the other software, in which case I would have to uninstall it. Can it, e.g. put a dock specifically on the second monitor?

MC To the gentleman above who was worried about performance, the WXSERVICE is using only 2% of my CPU and I have multiple docks running. I checked out the reviews on CNET's download.com website prior to buying and they panned out very well. I'm really rooting for this developer because they actually put out a quality product.

Jorge Coelho Luther, you can see how the different Winstep applications relate to each other here:

http://www.winstep.net/comparisonfaq.asp

Avatar, the single user license is good for more than one computer if you're the one using them. There is, however, a Home Network license (just a tad less than the price of two single user licenses) which grants you the right to use it on up to 5 computers (including your work computer).

Frank, Winstep Xtreme handles as many monitors as you throw at it. It's developed on a system with 3 x 30" monitors. :-P

You can set the docks to live on whichever monitor you want. Although there is only one taskbar (for now) you can also, if you want, set it to run the Windows taskbar on one monitor and the Winstep Xtreme taskbar on the other.

Mike, thanks! :-)

VLM Is anyone able to compare and contrast Winstep Xtreme with True Launch Bar, also featured here from time to time. These 2 products seem to provide at least some similar functionality.
May 5 2012 at 6:21am Copy Link
0
Jorge Coelho Well, I *might* be a bit biased (but just a bit) ;-), so I'm not going to say anything regarding this. True Launch Bar seems to be good software and I heard good things about the developer too.

As for differences and overlapping features, I think you can find that out for yourself? Winstep Xtreme has a 30 day fully functional trial, and, if I am not mistaken, so does True Launch Bar.
Winstep Software Technologies - May 5 2012 at 7:47am Copy Link
0
VLM Well, let me rephrase my request. Anyone other than the developer. It's obviously an unfair question to ask of Jorge. :):)

Free trials are helpful indeed, but not so much in the face of a 1-day sale. Yes, I know, there are money-back guarantees, but I've tried that once or twice with some of these transaction processors, and I'd rather not endure it again. And finally, someone who has used both applications for some period of time would likely notice things I might not pick up during a trial period.

Anyway, if anyone can and is willing to share such a comparison, I'd be grateful. For I, too, have heard wonderful things about both developers.

Winstep Extreme works very well, and it is more a suite of programs than a single solution. I highly recommend this version as it includes all of the modules and you can try them all and pick which ones you want to use. The can all be used independently so you can pick and chose at will.

Chris It doesn't say it works with Windows 8,1 64 bit here but I found via their site the following info:

System Requirements
Windows 2000/2003 Server/XP/Vista/7/8
32 or 64 bit.
500 Mhz processor.
256 MB of RAM.
50 MB of free hard disk space.

So I assume it will work with 8.1 as well?

Amit, 1. Yes, 2. Five users.

Chris, works just fine under Windows 8.x 64 bit except for the Glass Blur feature, as Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, decided to remove that functionality in Windows 8. However, I heard you can bring that back with a program called "Aero Glass".

Bought it 01-03-2013 full price, and not a single update or bugfix has been released so far. Support is completely dead, no answers to anything, they have a beta-area, you have to ask for access to, I did asked the day I bought, and have not yet received access or even a answer.

I have seen that the excuse should be the developer is sick or something personal.

Program is dead imho.

I had to buy another program from another developer, to get a stable experience under win 8.1 64bit.

Edit: I see now they released an update (November 7, 2014) cool, now I have to pay again to get a few bugfix, I paid 35Euro 01-03-2013.

Jorge Coelho PL: Now we're on the same page, I fully understand your worries.

Look, Winstep is basically a one man shop (me). For *personal* reasons I had to stop making updates for what ended up being much longer than I intended.

Life is like that sometimes, and it is not unheard of an active application to go without updates for 2 years or longer (as it happened with Stardock's ObjectDock, for instance). Then development resumes.

What you have to realize is that when you purchase an application, you are doing it (or should) for what it does for you NOW, not for what it might be doing sometime in the future. As such, Winstep applications give you a lot of bang for the money - after all, you are buying the result of 12+ years of continuous development and not paying extra for that either. ;)

Anyway, I agree with you, some trust has been lost, I understand, and it will take some time to regain that. In the mean time, Winstep Xtreme, as it currently is, speaks for itself. :)

Let's be clear about this, I certainly wouldn't call simply changing the wallpaper DESTROYING it. The original bitmap is not touched in ANY WAY and you can change back to it again in the normal way you change Windows wallpapers.

Wallpapers are a big part of a theme, which is why Xtreme changes it when run for the first time or whenever you change themes. This behavior can be later overridden in the settings, if you wish.

And I'm not Dutch, I'm Portuguese! lol

User Account Hi Jorge, Okay, let me emphasise 'without the slightest 'by your leave' of request'. No warning, no backup, no thank you.
And the reason I said 'destroy' is because you don't always have the original on hand. It might take some effort to re-locate the image originally used, or to save the current image from down in the bowels of \Windows. I believe it's highly impolite to just whack a user's environment with no means of retrieval ..by surprise.
Portuguese, eh? Dutch, Portuguese? Much the same. Beautiful language.

Jorge Coelho User Account: Dutch and Portuguese much the same?! Aaargh! LOL :)

Anyway, the point is nothing is deleted or destroyed, your original wallpaper is still there on your hard disk wherever you put it last. :)

The alternative to NOT changing wallpapers would be to prompt the user for a choice when Xtreme runs for the first time BEFORE applying the initial theme.

Now, software vendors know by experience that startup prompts are usually ignored by users (the vast majority just want to get on with installation and will simply press Yes or Ok without even reading what the dialog says). That prompt would thus become an annoyance itself, wouldn't do much to solve the problem since most users wouldn't even read it, and it would interfere with the initial experience.

As I said, wallpapers are a major component of a theme since they are carefully chosen by the theme author to match that specific theme. An initial choice to prevent themes from changing the current wallpaper would thus become very detrimental to the first time experience of trying out all the different themes that ship with Xtreme.

In the end, all the user has to do to get his original wallpaper back after trying out all the themes that ship with Xtreme, is to select it normally via Windows as he did before when he first applied that wallpaper.

Jorge Coelho J S, Renewals should ALWAYS be performed via the built-in 'Renew' button in the About tab of the application itself, which will take you to the correct web page for that product.

Also, and I think you will be happy to know this, renewals for the Home Network version cost exactly the same as renewals for the Single Users license (i.e.; there is no extra cost). There is only that little extra initial investment for the Home Network version, after that the cost of renewals is the same for everyone.

Chuck, thanks for helping J S out with this while I was sleeping and pointing him in the right direction. :)

Jorge Coelho 1. Winstep Xtreme by default hides the Windows taskbar and 'replaces' it with it's own customizable version.

Since TLB (AFAIK) attaches itself to the Windows taskbar, it won't be accessible from Winstep Xtreme.

This said, Winstep Xtreme replaces much of the functionality of TLB.

Furthermore if you still want to run TLB together with Xtreme, you can either

a) Disable the Winstep Xtreme taskbar and work only with the Windows taskbar. You would still be able to access Xtreme's customizable menus via hotspots.

or

b) Display both the Windows taskbar and the Xtreme taskbar at the same time.

Almost anything is possible. ;-)

2. Winstep Xtreme themes have nothing to do with Windows themes, since Xtreme only skins itself.

Also, Xtreme does not change system files in any way, and getting back to 'normal' Windows is as simple as exiting the application.

Andreas Hoffmann Jorge, thanks for your answers here!
I would like to know how much a prolongation will cost for this software and are there more modules than shown on your website?
I see Win10 coming without the sidebar and think about Winstep Xtreme as a (kind of) replacement? Can we, as users, build these modules ourselves?
Thanks in advance + greetings - Andreas

Jorge Coelho Hi Andreas! :)

You can read more about Winstep Xtreme's Upgrade Policy here, it should answer all your questions regarding upgrades:

http://www.winstep.net/xtupgradefaq.asp

Users cannot add different type of modules/widgets themselves, but they can skin existing ones. This ensures the modules are top-quality, perfectly integrated, and generally more useful than the average widget. Each Winstep module also has two versions: an in-dock icon version, and a free-form skin desktop version.

Anyway, more modules will be added in time, currently I'm working on adding a battery monitor widget with power event logging, etc...

As for using the docks without replacing the Start Menu, yes, it's perfectly possible. Winstep applications are 'modular', so you can simply turn off the bits and pieces you are not interested in.

Jon User I'm a decades-long user of the popular Stardock customization and enhancement programs for Windows software that has a long track history through the past 10 iterations of Windows (since around the win 3.1 timeframe). With their myriad features and proven reliability running alongside other desktop enhancements such as Display Fusion Pro, I have to ask what additional benefit this would provide over their product?
Nov 17 2015 at 2:52pm Copy Link
0
Jorge Coelho Jon: try it out and you will immediately see the additional benefits.

For the same type of products, there is simply no comparison in terms of both functionality *and* eye-candy.

In terms of eye-candy, for instance, the docks and tabbed dock have over 20 different mouse-over, launch and attention effects. You also have liquid surface effects, where dock backgrounds act as if they were water when you click on them, several different dock and menu pop-up effects, desktop modules can fade in when needed and fade out when not needed, etc... Each module has two different styles you can chose from, and I could go on and on...

In terms of functionality, again the list is endless. You have user defined menus (which you can create via drag & drop or through the built-in menu editor), a very long list of useful internal commands (stuff such as Shutdown, Hibernate, take a screenshot of the screen, etc...) that you can add as items to docks, menus and tabbed docks, hotspot/hot-key activation, you can activate docks by screen edge bumps *or* edge swipes, drag & drop works everywhere as it should (even in tabbed docks displaying the contents of folders in your hard drive), you have an unlimited number of nested sub-docks, the Email Checker module can work with multiple POP3/IMAP email accounts even when they require SSL encryption, everything is customizable! The Winstep Xtreme taskbar even has its own fully functional language bar, with the difference that you can put in anywhere, even on docks! Again, I could go on and on.

Jon User Thanks Jorge. Have you or someone else who has used this tested to see whether the Winstep software Is 100% compatible with the additional Stardock Fences product that controls precisely how and where desktop icons reside on the screen(s) and the Display Fusion software that determines which monitor a program window opens. On my 3-monitor configuration both of those are mandatory can't-live-without-them pieces of software and I cannot risk be impacted by anything this software might attempt to do.
Nov 17 2015 at 4:13pm Copy Link

Jorge Coelho As far as I know, Winstep software does not interfere with 3rd party software in any way, shape or form. Many users use Fences together with Winstep applications, for instance.

As for Display Fusion, I think there are also some users using it together with Winstep Xtreme. However, keep in mind Xtreme also uses its own taskbar IIRC, so you might have to disable Xtreme's version, or have it co-exist with DF's taskbar, up to you.

As I said above, Winstep Xtreme is modular, so you can decide which functions to keep and which to turn off. For instance, if you disable NextSTART altogether (the menu and taskbar management component of Xtreme), you will still be left with the Shelf (tabbed dock), docks, desktop modules and even customized menus. Or you can simply tell NextSTART not to replace the Windows taskbar, in which case you can still make your own user-defined menus and invoke them via hotspots or items in the docks/Shelf.

Jorge Coelho Sorry, I meant *DF* uses its own taskbar replacement. Anyway, Winstep Xtreme has a trial version, give it a go and see for yourself: as I said it does not interfere with 3rd party software and getting back to 'normal' Windows is a simple question of exiting the software.

Jorge Coelho Oh boy. There is nothing I can do at this time since the e-commerce part is handled by BMT Micro and I'm pretty sure they are all sleeping by now.

I tried a test order just a while ago using a Credit Card and it went through ok, discount included. Checking Out on the first screen immediately processes the order with the discount, which is as it should be.

When I change the payment method on the order page from CC to Paypal or Amazon, I get taken to a second screen, but the discount is still active. It does disappear if I change the Currency though.

Anyway, BDJ and Winstep are extending the promotion for another 24 hours, so you still have time, but I am going to have to ask you a favor so I have something to show BMT Micro in the morning:

Please send me an email to supportwinstep.net with a detailed description of how you are placing the order and screenshots of all the different panels you see. PLEASE don't forget to edit out sensitive payment information from those screenshots before you send them to me.

Jorge Coelho Jon: alas, Winstep Xtreme used to have a very complete and detailed user guide, but work on it was stopped when the User Interface was changed completely after v9.5.

Later on, Proxma AG, Winstep's distributors in Germany did make a 'booklet', but the original is obviously in German. I had that translated to English, but ended up not having the time to review the translation, so there are many errors.

Still, if you think it helps, you can download it from here:

Jorge Coelho Peter, unlike us here you seem to be having a field day. :)

Winstep has worked exclusively with BMT Micro for the past 15 years. They're one of the best companies I have ever worked with with some of the nicest people I ever met, so much so that during all those years Winstep has turned down countless offers to switch from other payment processors. Some things money just can't pay.

The people who work there are incredibly helpful, always go above and beyond the call of duty to solve issues for you, the company is extremely responsive, and, above all, the people I talk to these days are exactly the same people I talked to 15 years ago (which, in this day and age, is a very rare occurrence, they must love working there)! I've had them reply to me and solve issues on weekends many times before!

Trust me, what happened during this promotion is a one time thing. We're all entitled to a bad day.

The Paypal/Amazon issue happened because the Winstep shopping cart is customized to match the Winstep web site and the Paypal/Amazon options were added at a later stage. Those options were tested at the time and were working for normal orders. If anything, you can say I'm the one to blame for not testing the discount codes in those new options.

Furthermore, I'm the one who misunderstood what BDJ's Constantin Florea wrote here yesterday when the Paypal problem first came to light. Since they've worked closely with BMT Micro before too, and I was unavailable at the time, I assumed (wrongly, of course) he had already contacted them on Winstep's behalf. By assuming I 'made an ass out of u and me', as they say, and the problem went on unfixed until after office hours.

So, if you want to point the finger at someone, point it at me. BMT Micro are an amazing company and payment processor, and I only have good things to say about them.

peter anon At Jorge I'm sure they're really nice to their pets and I hope you make great babies together.

From a paying customer viewpoint it took 48 hours to be able to pay and I STILL don't actually have the licensed product.

So your words mean nothing.
I simply vote with my wallet. Next time any offer is via BMT I will not buy. Period. That will include you of course.

Vendors on BitsDujour need to realise that everything is about the customer experience. Including things like clarity of the offer.

99% of offers on Bitsdujour go perfectly!
The 1% who can't actually complete a sale effortlessly, should expect to be called out, so our community knows who to trust.

Excuses don't matter. eCommerce isn't that hard.
Offer. Order, Payment. Delivery. Customer Support.

I'm a paying customer. It's supposed to be THAT easy!

Let me say it again.
It took 48 hours to pay and I still don't have an actual product.

Jorge Coelho Peter, I'm glad for you. Must be wonderful to be such a perfect human being who never makes mistakes or has a bad day. :)

Anyway, as I said, if you want to blame someone, blame me. Winstep has had several other promotions on Bits Du Jour in the past and they all went flawlessly. This one didn't. It happens. It's not the end of the world and it won't happen again since the discount problem with Paypal has now been fixed for good.

Now to what really matters: are you're saying you actually paid for Xtreme but haven't received the email with your license key yet? License key are sent immediately upon purchase, and, since I can find an order from you (at least not under the email address you use here) either the order did not go through or it was flagged for review for some reason.

I'll look into it and will let you know. If you used an email address in your purchase other than the one you use here, please let me know by contacting me via Winstep support (suppportwinstep.net).

Thanks and have a great day!

John User This software caught my eye and I did a little more research on it. I have to agree with CNET's review that is is very good software for older versions of Windows. It seems to me that if you use Windows 10 you can do everything that Winstep Xtreme purports to do already.

Am I missing features not found in Windows 10?

Please convince me that I am wrong, Jorge, and I might give this software a try. Thank you.
Jun 16 2016 at 8:24am Copy Link
0
Jorge Coelho Look, I could write a 10 page long testament on all the things Winstep Xtreme can do that Windows 10 doesn't, but I won't. The problem is that reviews like the one at Cnet are made by people who did not look at the software past skin deep. Not surprising, since they only have a few hours to write a review instead of days to actually work and play with the software.

It's like their review for the Winstep Nexus dock, written by Tom McNamara. I had to laugh when I read it because his major Con was that the screenshot tool in Nexus only saved screenshots in JPG format and had no PNG format choice. I had to laugh because that screenshot tool is but a drop of water in an ocean of features and was never intended as a specialized screenshot tool, but as a way to take a quick snapshot of your desktop. It is a *single* internal command in a total list of over *80* other useful internal commands he probably didn't even noticed existed.

Never-the-less, I added that ability to optionally save in PNG format to the next version.

Anyway, if you think Windows is just like MacOSX because both are operating systems, then Winstep Xtreme is indeed not for you. If you think the MacOSX dock is just like the Windows taskbar because both are used to launch programs and display running applications, then Winstep Xtreme is not for you.

However, if you do recognize the differences, then I suggest you pay a visit to the Winstep Forums at http://forums.winstep.net and browse the latest topics there. It will give you an idea on what other users think, and also an idea on what Winstep applications can really do.

I also suggest you read the News section on the Winstep web site (both the current and the archived), as the descriptions for what is new in each new version will also give you an idea on some of the software capabilities as well as current development status.

Finally, Winstep Xtreme has a 30 day trial version. Use it. Play with it. If that is the type of software for you, then I'm sure it will take you just a couple of days to realize that Winstep Xtreme is actually worth much, much, more than the $39.90 retail price.
Winstep Software Technologies - Jun 16 2016 at 10:35am Copy Link

Jorge Coelho Since I'm on a roll, I'm also going to give you a practical example: :)

Windows has a battery icon on the notification area. Winstep Xtreme also has a battery module/widget.

Given this, you could argue that Windows already does what the Winstep battery module does. And you could not be more wrong.

While both display the current battery status and battery time remaining, the Winstep battery module goes much further than this.

1. You can place this battery module wherever you want: it can be on a dock, on the Shelf or on the desktop.

2. The Windows battery icon is what it is, it cannot be changed. The Winstep battery module, as much everything else in Winstep applications, is fully customizable. You can make it look like whatever you want, even like a cartoon character. You can colorize it. You can take a nice wallpaper and use a part of that wallpaper as the battery charge background via simple drag & drop.

3. The Winstep battery module is able to show a lot of information regarding the battery, from manufacturer, to type, to current voltage to battery health.

4. The Winstep battery module can notify you by voice or by sound whenever a power event happens (e.g.; when power fails and when power has been restored). Admittedly not very useful, but still really cool to hear your PC telling you in a nice female (or male) voice that the utility power has been restored.

5. Power events can be logged. This is great if you have an UPS on a system that runs 24/7 - you no longer have to install proprietary UPS software which also disables Windows native power management (e.g.; APC PowerChute).

You come home to a shutdown PC and you can know exactly what happened by looking at the logs, for instance.

6. While Windows can be made to hibernate or power off your computer when the battery reaches low and critical levels, the Winstep battery module again goes much further than that: for each of the two power events, you can tell it to run one of the 80 available internal commands (Shutdown, Hibernate, Sleep, Power Off Monitor, etc, being among those), display a visual warning, or run a user defined program.

The latter, for instance, can be extremely useful if you have a single UPS providing backup power to more than one computer. The UPS can only be connected to one PC, so when the battery runs out, only one of those PCs is going to be shut down gracefully. With the Winstep battery module, you can make it run a program that tells the other PC via the local network to shutdown as well.

Besides all that, the battery module in Winstep Xtreme is actually pretty to look at. The Windows battery icon, on the other hand, is a simple 16x16 black and white icon on the notification area.

And this is just for the battery module. Winstep Xtreme has eight other modules/widgets, from a weather monitor to an email checker, with more on the pipeline. And did I mention the Alarm Manager feature, which is actually more like a powerful yet simple to use Task Scheduler? And, and, and... ;-)

John User So, to make a long story short, I just purchased Winstep Xtreme using PayPal.

There were two reasons why I bought this software:

1. The response of Jorge shows me the developer is concerning with the software enough to address questions. This took his time and I appreciate that - it bodes well for future support issues that may come up.

2. The software itself. Really, do yourself a favor and download the trial version of this product. Frankly, it will knock your socks off with so many things it can do - in Windows 10.

While I do like the software so far, it will require quite a bit of work on my part. There are many features to learn, but more importantly action will be required to unlearn/uninstall certain programs, etc. I am used to using. For example, I have been using Rainmeter for my widgets and Start Menu X to manage my programs. Winstep Xtreme offers alternatives to both now that I have installed the program. To avoid the conflicts (Rainmeter is still there but partly overlaid by Winstep information) I have to get buy.

Again, thanks for taking the time to respond and I look forward to learning and using this software.

PS. I note that I have only purchased a ONE YEAR license including updates, but the good news is that future upgrades will be 50% off if I read this right. ;-)

geo User Just my 2 cents:
I usually don't comment about stuff online that easily, unless I feel strongly about it.
So, one reason I like BDJ is that they have offers where people can comment on their experience and for the vendors to participate in that exchange (if they choose to do so).
Today's offer fits that bill (as many others in the past).
This particular software was in my radar many years ago ( WinXP years) and for some reason I must have assumed it was abandoned or something like that.
Then when I saw the offer and read about it I said hmmm ...,
Read the current comments, looked at the old ones, went to the web site and I saw they also had a FORUM, that means a following.
I never regretted buying software that users care enough to comment in a positive way, the developer care enough to be part of the conversation and past users cared enough to participate in a forum.
I hope Jorge Coelho keeps up his good ways and his passion for his product for as long as God will let him.
And that is my my 2 cents plus $39.47.

Ronald Jurman A bit confused on the inclusion of Winstep Start Menu Organizer in the package.

On the web site, it lists Winstep Start Menu Organizer Pro under Winstep Xtreme, as well as "Organize Start Menu shortcuts into user-defined categories" under the feature comparison (which agrees with this), but the Pro version isn't listed under the Features (BDJ page), and the trial download includes only the Freeware version.

Which is actually included?
Jun 16 2016 at 10:39pm Copy Link

Jorge Coelho The Buy Now page at the Winstep web site makes that clear.

Winstep Xtreme includes the Pro version of the Winstep Start Menu Organizer (WSMO), but during the trial it acts as the free version. Register Winstep Xtreme and it becomes the Pro version.

This said, please note that the WSMO is only compatible with Windows versions up to Windows 7. Under Windows 10 Microsoft started using some kind of internal database for the Windows Start Menu that is not compatible with the WSMO.

Anyway, promotion is now over, thanks everybody for their participation! Hope you guys have fun with Winstep Xtreme. :)

HJ B What is the difference between the basic version and the home network version.

As I understand it, if I own and personally use 3 or 4 computers, a single basic license permits me to install the product on each of those computers. What does the network version do, beyond the functionality of the basic version being installed on each of the networked computers?

Thank you.

Jorge Coelho @HJ B: Ok, I'm going to be very open about this:

As you know, many applications are licensed per computer and not per user. From a business point of view, this makes all the sense in the world for the company selling the product.

However, I personally dislike this type of very strict licensing, the same way I also dislike draconian DRM measures that end up seriously inconveniencing legit users. I believe in common sense and middle grounds.

So, I really think the same license should allow you to use the software you just paid good money for on both your desktop computer and on your laptop.

However, when we start talking about using a single user license on 3 and 4 computers at once, we are already pushing the limits of what I think is acceptable. If you own that many computers, chances are your wife or kids will be using them too at some point - and that already goes against the per user license.

So, I basically leave the choice of which license to buy (Regular or Home Network) to the user himself - most of the time you can trust him to make the right choice according to his own conscience.

Up until now I have never felt the need to blacklist a license key due to a legit user abusing the licensing terms (except in the *single case*, in 17 years, where a legit user deliberately shared his license key with the Internet).

So, to be really blunt, if you have 3 or 4 computers I think you should buy the Home Network version. It only costs the price of 2 single user licenses but allows you to use the software on up to 5 computers with peace of mind, while at the same time giving me a little extra - but much needed - revenue.

Furthermore, this is a one time expense. Upgrade renewals (i.e.; when your one year of free upgrades runs out) for Home Network and Single User licenses cost exactly the same!

I think this is a fair system for everyone involved.

HJ B I purchased the standard version before you replied. For the time being, I will stick with it since I am having some difficulty understanding your system/ To me, at least, it is clearly not intuitive and I am experiencing some strange activity by the program and I am not sure whether it is intentional or is simply not working on my computer as intended,

I actually have and use four computers - a laptop and three in various parts of my home. That seemed to fit in with the description of single user used in your promotion. My wife has her own computer and we do not use each other's at all.

I also think your should have posted your notice concerning windows 10 and the menu rearrangement function when the promotion started and not when it was all over.

Jorge Coelho The term 'strange activity' just made me think of X-Files lol.

If you are having problems with the software please either send a message to Winstep support or make a post on the Winstep Forums. I actually prefer the latter since replies also help others that might have the same problem.

Also please list in that post what you do not find intuitive and any suggestions you might have to solve that, I'm always looking for ways to improve the software in that respect.

No worries about the Single vs. Home Network issue.

Regarding the WSMO not being compatible with the Windows 10 Start Menu, you're making it sound like I failed to mention that on purpose. That's not nice, HJ. :-P :)

The WSMO page on the Winstep web site does NOT mention Windows 10 or Windows 8 as a compatible OS.

Under Winstep Xtreme, if Winstep Xtreme is the car, the WSMO is the complimentary cup holder, which is why it didn't even occur to me mentioning that fact until someone actually mentioned the WSMO here.

Finally, even if the WSMO does not work with the Windows 10 Start Menu, it still works with the Winstep Xtreme Start Menu. So under Windows 10 it is *still useful* in the context of Winstep Xtreme, which is what matters.

I have to say the software is a bit complicated and there is a learning curve to get things the way you want them, but the number of useful features beyond the excellent cosmetics is mind-boggling. Honestly, I am still learning some of the things this program has to offer. I also have to give kudos to their tech support as they were quick to answer several questions about the program I had. IMO this software is well worth their asking price.

Since translations are made by the users themselves, some of those translations may be incomplete or not up-to-date.

The next release (v16.12) also adds high-quality English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian and French voice packs.

Voice packs are used by the clock module to announce the time, by the Email Checker module to announce the arrival of new messages, and by the Battery Monitor module to announce power events. v16.12 uses the new voice packs to say the time in a format appropriate to each of the languages specified above.

How would I re-download my original purchased version and the updates that I was entitled during the 365 day upgrade period? Also, in case of a system reinstall or upgrade is there a way to back up Winstep Extreme so the customization is not lost and just do a backup restore? How is the re-activation handled in case of a system re-install? Thanks.

Jorge Coelho > is it possible to see the previous version history and downloads?

In the application itself just open Preferences, click the version number in the About tab and then the 'Change Log' button in the dialog that pops up.

Otherwise you can see the changes between versions by reading the News section in the Winstep web site itself. Each release announcement has an 'highlights' section and below it a complete change log for that version.

> How would I re-download my original purchased version

Depends on what that version is.

Ultimately it's the user's responsibility to backup/archive the setup program. When downloading updates via the Winstep Update Manager, the smaller update setup files are automatically stored locally. Still up to you to make sure you have a backup of those setup files in case of a hard drive crash.

While we can always send older license keys, for technical reasons we only started archiving older releases from version 16.9 onwards. We don't have any versions released prior to that.

Something to note is that you don't need to purchase the latest version at full price ever again if you are a previous Winstep user - regardless of how long ago that was. Just get in contact with Winstep support with your previous registrations details (i.e.; something that can help us identify your previous purchase) and we will send you a link from where you can renew your upgrade subscription for half the full product price (i.e.; normal upgrade subscription renewal). This will entitle you to run the latest version as well as free upgrades for the next 365 days.

> in case of a system reinstall or upgrade is there a way to back up Winstep Extreme so the customization is not lost and just do a backup restore?

Yes. For settings, you must first back those up from inside the application - you will later use the resulting file to restore your old settings into the new system.

Just don't forget that NextSTART and WorkShelf (the two major components of the Winstep Xtreme suite) are independent applications - you will have to backup the settings for each of those applications independently.

For themes, etc, you will have to copy the contents of the

C:\Users\Public\Documents\WinStep

folder from your old system into your new system.

> How is the re-activation handled in case of a system re-install?

Re-activation is automatic and pretty transparent. Really not something you need to worry about. :)

Jorge Coelho > Do you have a link to the Home Network version user manual?

As is common with these type of applications, there is no User Guide. The application is pretty much self-explanatory and easy to use.

> Does the "Home Network" work as a network between a set of workplace computers and a home network?

The 'Home Network' version is simply a *license* type that legally allows you to use Winstep Xtreme on more than one computer (see question above regarding what is the Home Network version). Other than that, functionality is exactly the same.

> Is there security of sign-on to networked computers?

Winstep applications installed on different computers do not communicate with each other.

> Is there HIPPA level security if one wanted to use the network version in a medical clinic?

We do not give out any customer information to anyone at any time. Winstep applications do not in any way send or broadcast any personal information to us or anyone else.

Correct!

From the Winstep Xtreme Upgrade Policy page:

Q) I am thinking of buying the Home Network version. Do I have to pay more for upgrade renewals too?

A) No! Subscription renewals for the Home Network version cost exactly the same as Single User License renewals. Buying the Home Network version is a one-time investment only.

Jorge Coelho @HJ B - Three computers and one laptop? It would probably be best to buy the Home Network version - it costs less than the price of two single user licenses but is good for up to 5 computers (and with the 50% promotion at BDJ you actually get it for the price of a normal single user license).

The only difference between Winstep Xtreme and Winstep Xtreme Home Network is the license, they're the same product - as stated above, the Home Network license clearly and unequivocally allows you to run Winstep Xtreme on up to 5 computers.

Hope this helps! :)

geo User @Jorge Coelho, just want to know how the upgrade works.
For example, I have purchased (and very happy so) back in fall of 2015. So my update time is over. If I do purchase the upgrade to the latest version do I receive a new key and does the old one get deactivated or can I still use it, say for my older laptop?
Nov 15 2017 at 11:26pm Copy Link
0
Jorge Coelho @geo User - Having purchased a Winstep application at full price *once* (even on promotions such as this) you do not need to pay full price *ever again* - even if you're upgrading from a version that is several years old.

Basically when you purchase you get one year of free upgrades. After that year upgrades cost *half* the price *and* entitle you to yet another year of free upgrades.

The process is explained better here:

http://www.winstep.net/xtupgradefaq.asp

When you upgrade, you get a new license key that replaces the old one. The old key does not get deactivated, it will simply not work with the newer versions of the software.

Although a key can indeed be deactivated if abused, you can use the same single user license key on both your desktop PC and your laptop, no problems.

Send me an email to Winstep support and I'll send you the link to the upgrade renewal page. :)

Jorge Coelho @Charles Beauchamp - Thank you for your reply explaining the political views behind your request.

What shocked me was your inability - or unwillingness - to understand that behind every software company there are people exactly like you and me, working hard to feed their families, etc... They are not responsible for what their government is doing, and in some cases may even be victims of such a government, yet it is they - not their government - that would be punished by views such as yours. Perhaps you should think about this a bit too - personally I don't think you should mix politics with software. :)

Anyway, to answer your question: Winstep Software Technologies is located in Portugal, a country that is a part of the EU. As I'm pretty sure you know, it's a nice democratic country by the sea with great weather, great people, great food. Come visit us sometime, you'll love it here. :)

John User I purchased Winstep Xtreme through an offer here in June 2016. I used it for awhile and, frankly, it just became a bit overwhelming for me with so many features and things going on with my Windows 10 screen. So, when I bought my new PC in early 2017 I just didn't install it.

Now, I am thinking of giving it another go, but I am undecided whether to renew my prior subscription or just take advantage of this BDJ offer. They would both be the same price, $19.95, right?

But, if I renew my prior subscription would it start in June 2017 when the old one expired or start today? Then, would I have to renew again in June 2018?

Thank you. This is a great program with many interesting features.
Nov 16 2017 at 7:42am Copy Link
0
Jorge Coelho @John User - Keep in mind Winstep Xtreme is pretty modular - if you feel overwhelmed by all the things it has and does, just turn off some of the things you wouldn't want to use.

As for the upgrade subscription renewal, the year of free upgrades ALWAYS starts when you purchase the renewal, regardless of you having let it lapse or not, so in your case it would start today (i.e.; there is no penalty whatsoever for not renewing when the period of free upgrades ends). This way everyone is happy and you only renew when - and if - you feel like doing so is worth it. :)

Since it is a renewal and not a new purchase, you should renew via the normal channel, not via BDJ. Send me an email to Winstep support if you need help with this. :)
