CFGuy Question for WiseCleaner Rep - I took a look at your website for this product, "Wise Duplicate Finder", and I saw a headline stating "Manage Any Type of Duplicates", which is quite impressive. My question is: can this program find Outlook email message (".MSG" files) duplicates. and if so what is the process - is there a toolbar installed in the Outlook program, or is it done through a "standalone" program? George Van Winkle I've downloaded and installed this product. I can find ZERO information about how it determines a file is a duplicate, other than the obvious name and size option. The WiseCare site is so lacking in detail that it makes me think of a malware site. Does it perform a bit-for-bit comparison? Does it hash the files and compare the hash values?

Without information on how it determines a file is a duplicate, it's pretty much worthless because you have to manually review EVERY FILE IT FLAGS to determine for yourself whether it's a duplicate or a false alarm (there are A TON OF FALSE DUPLICATES in the result). If you're comparing multiple hard drives, that's just not a reasonable thing to do.

Until WiseCare is more forthcoming about the inner workings of their software, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND NOT TRUSTING THEIR PRODUCTS.

Did you try to choose "exact match"?
A backup is automatically created by default in "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Wise Duplicate Finder\"
You can change the path.

Jim Ranson @George Van Winkle Interesting points. Just because an application says a file is a duplicate does not mean it is. Unless it uses a set of user criteria to allow the user to have confidence in the results there is no point in using the software.

Its fine if the program makes a backup. that allows us to recover from short term oopsies. Part of using such a program is to eliminate the duplicate files over time and in turn free up hard drive space etc. Having to keep backups around because of the lack of confidence in the app kinda of defeats that aim.

holec I tried it, but Wise Duplicate Finder can't use mounted network drives. I see only the hard disk drives. Over the network function, the network drives are accessible.

For me, Duplicate Cleaner is better.

George Van Winkle xilolee, I did try selecting "exact match" but it never finished and there is no explanation of how it determines what it an "exact match." The software doesn't show any information about what criteria it is using to compare the files as an "exact match."

Again, without ANY details about how this function is performed, it is virtually worthless. That means I have to manually verify that files it flags are duplicates.

I've got other free duplicate finders which are much more transparent about the method of comparing the files. Also, they're MUCH faster than this software.

My advice is "Don't waste your time or hard drive space on this one."

cait User I found that the program found some 400 duplicate zero bit files....a lot were something to do with assembly...that made me very nervous as I know some programs require zero byte files. I must admit, I have 30T of information on this system, but that number of duplicate zero files scares the heck out of me. When I ran other duplicate finders, they did not even show up. I chose to err on the side of caution and deleted the program.
