Oops! Don't you hate it when you accidentally write over - or save to - the wrong file? Recycle Bin is no help at all for that one.

Or when you notice that something that used to work (or look good) suddenly doesn't, and you don't know when it broke or what you changed?

Or when you don't like some changes you've made, and Undo simply won't get your file back to how you want it?

You can't stop and backup every version of every file every 10 minutes, and even if you could, you wouldn't know which file was the one you wanted. Right?

Wrong, as it happens. Active Backup does exactly that - it automatically backs up files as you change them, and shows you a comprehensive log of what's changed. How useful!

Please note folks: Active Backup now features a new Visual Studio plug-in which makes the application even easier to use for developers.

Richard Blake On 8/20/09 you wrote "I have done some initial testing on a early version of Windows 7 and it worked fine.
Regarding the future of this product, I have already ported the key parts to .Net (some of which will be in
the AJC Sync v3 to be released soon in beta) so expect a nicer looking UI at some point it the future."
I see that current version is 2.8.1, released end of January. Did you decide to abandon the migration to .NET?
(That doesn't necessarily bother me, just curious.)

Does your diff program handle .doc, .docx or both? Thanks.

I have hundreds of directories containing files that I may want to subject to version control. Would this degrade performance of your product?

I don't think I want a diff backup taken every time I click Save (frequent), but only after significant tasks are completed.
Would your program behave without stress if I turned off realtime backups and just did a 'sweep' update at the end of each day?

Can I tag certain revisions with labels so they can be easily located as a group?

Is it possible to "collapse" multiple consecutive revisions into a single one, e.g. all the changes between revisions associated with two tags (if you have tags), or two dates?
This would tidy the revision archive and simplify review of long-ago changes for which I am no longer interested in fine-grained changes.

Does AJC-AB maintain a separate physical file for each source file that is under revision control, or a physical file for each tracked directory, or for each partition / network share, or for each system on which the software is installed?

It appears that file extensions are global. Have you considered adding per-directory overrides (additions and subtractions) to the global list?

Sorry if I asked a Q already answered; there is a lot of conversation up there.

Andrew Cutforth Not much of this is related to AJC Grep but to reply briefly to to the above questions.
All of our software is .Net now.
Yes diff does .doc and docx
Active Backup will not degrade system performance if you just archive the important files and not temp files etc.
If you don't want instant backups use AJC Sync on a schedule instead of Active Backup.
If you open up a revision archive you can comment against revisions.
You can purge an archive which does remove some revisions according to the logic you use.
Yes AJC Active Backup keeps one archive file per source file but it contains multiple versions of that file.
Active Backup can have file patterns specific to a folder you are monitoring.
Any more non-grep questions it would be better to email support - thanks.
